Tutor.com’s Live Homework Help® featured at Launch of Dallas Public Library’s New Teen Centers

NEW YORK, June 16, 2009 - Tutor.com’s Live Homework Help® service, the company’s flagship one-to-one, online tutoring and homework program is being featured today at the Dallas Public Library’s celebration of their new Teen Centers at the Dallas West Library. Every branch library in the City of Dallas will have its own Teen Center thanks to a $500,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation. The grant funds laptops, materials, digital cameras, workshops and programs. Students using the Teen Centers will have access to Live Homework Help from public access computers or remotely from their homes with a library card.

Tutor.com has been providing online tutoring and homework help to Dallas-area students since 2006. Tutors have completed over 10,000 sessions with local students – helping them complete assignments, build confidence in their academic abilities and improve their grades. On demand help from a certified tutor is needed more than ever as students contend with rigorous standards including four years of math and science courses to graduate from Texas public schools.

“We’re always glad to see corporations like AT&T funding the invaluable programs public libraries offer their local communities,” said George Cigale, founder and CEO of Tutor.com. “Libraries are an important part of a student’s education and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Dallas Public Library as part of the new Teen Centers.”

Tutor.com will provide more help for K-12, college and adult students and job seekers this July when the company launches the Tutor.com Learning Suite. New services include the K-12 Student Center , College Center and Adult Career Center . Each center features one-to-one live, online tutoring, ProofPoint™ for real-time writing and resume help and the SkillsCenter™ Resource Library which includes thousands of vetted materials including step-by-step tutorials for students who choose to work independently. The SkillsCenter also includes resume templates and tips as well as financial tools for adults managing household budgets.

CHICAGO — Despite the proliferation of online homework websites and tutoring services, public libraries still have an important role to play when it comes to supporting young people’s educational needs. Public libraries that take a proactive approach—by setting up organized homework centers—have the potential to become catalysts for better performance in school, improved self-esteem, and engaged learning. Whether readers are investigating the possibility of setting up a center from scratch or are eager to revamp an existing center, Cindy Mediavilla’s “ Creating & Managing the Full-Service Homework Center ,” published by ALA Editions, shows the way forward with:

  • discussion of the philosophy behind a public library homework center and its many benefits, with useful talking points for getting stakeholders on board;
  • examples of model programs from across the country;
  • guidance on assessing the community’s educational priorities and utilizing outcome-based planning and evaluation methods;
  • pragmatic advice on how to collaborate with schools and educators to coordinate goals;
  • thorough consideration of such key issues as carving out a space, setting hours, scheduling staff, and selecting and procuring educational resources;
  • handy tools for a successful homework center, including sample surveys, homework helper application forms and contracts, staff and volunteer job descriptions, and focus group questions;
  • advice on equipment and technology considerations; and
  • methodologies for evaluation and improvement.

Mediavilla authored “Creating the Full–Service Homework Center in Your Library,” (ALA, 2001), which has been called “the quintessential guide to the practicalities of setting up a formal homework help center to provide one–to–one homework assistance to student patrons” (Intner, “Homework Help from the Library,” ix). In the early 1990s she managed a homework center, called the Friendly Stop, for the Orange (CA) Public Library, and she has been studying after–school homework programs ever since. She has published several articles on the topic and has evaluated homework programs for the Long Beach and Los Angeles public libraries. She has made presentations on homework help programs at the conferences of several major library associations, and she has also conducted many workshops on the topic.

Free mobile hotspots now available at select Dallas library branches

dallas public library homework help

DALLAS - Mobile hotspots are now available to check out at 10 branches of the Dallas Public Library.

The devices give library cardholders free Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices. They can be checked out for 30 days at a time.

“This is going to help everybody out. It’s going to help me look for another job. It’s going to help my kids being able to do their homework. We can all actually chill and watch family time videos and things like that. So, it’ll help us out real good,” said Devin Pryor, who borrowed one of the mobile hotspots on Monday.

The city council unanimously approved the $375,000 purchase last year.

The 900 mobile hotspots are available for checkout at library branches in areas that are considered underserved: Skyline, Pleasant Grove, Branch Prairie Creek, Dallas West, Martin Luther King, Highland Hills, Arcadia Park, Bachman Lake, Paul Laurence Dunbar Lancaster-Kiest and Polk Wisdom.

The devices do have content blockers on them to keep people from accessing inappropriate websites.
