These tasks gave us a chance to work in teams and know each other well. After the hard work, we were served delicious but simple food. Once done with the dinner, every student helped tirelessly to clean up the surrounding areas and wash the dishes. The Essay Prompt

Max's essay was originally written for the pre-2013 Common Application essay prompt that states, "Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence." The influential person option no longer exists, but there are many ways to write about an important person with the current seven essay options on the 2018-19 Common Application .

Max's essay has recently been revised to fit the new 650-word length limit of the current Common Application, and it would work nicely with the 2018-19 prompt #2 : "The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?"

The essay would also work well with Common Application essay option #5 , "Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others."

Max's Common Application Essay

Student Teacher

Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model. In fact, his teachers and his parents were constantly chastising him because he was disruptive, ate too much, and had a hard time staying focused. I met Anthony when I was a counselor at a local summer camp. The counselors had the usual duties of keeping kids from smoking, drowning, and killing each other. We made God’s eyes, friendship bracelets, collages, and other clichés. We rode horses, sailed boats, and hunted snipe.

Each counselor also had to teach a three-week course that was supposed to be a little more “academic” than the usual camp fare. I created a class called “Things that Fly.” I met with fifteen students for an hour a day as we designed, built, and flew kites, model rockets, and balsawood airplanes.

Anthony signed up for my class. He was not a strong student. He had been kept back a year at his school, and he was larger and louder than the other middle school kids. He talked out of turn and lost interest when others were talking. In my class, Anthony got some good laughs when he smashed his kite and threw the pieces into the wind. His rocket never made it to the launch pad because he crumpled it in a fit of frustration when a fin fell off.

In the final week, when we were making airplanes, Anthony surprised me when he drew a sketch of a sweep-wing jet and told me he wanted to make a “really cool plane.” Like many of Anthony’s teachers, and perhaps even his parents, I had largely given up on him. Now he suddenly showed a spark of interest. I didn’t think the interest would last, but I helped Anthony get started on a scale blueprint for his plane. I worked one-on-one with Anthony and had him use his project to demonstrate to his classmates how to cut, glue and mount the balsawood framework. When the frames were complete, we covered them with tissue paper. We mounted propellers and rubber bands. Anthony, with all his thumbs, created something that looked a bit like his original drawing despite some wrinkles and extra glue.

Our first test flight saw Anthony’s plane nose-dive straight into the ground. His plane had a lot of wing area in the back and too much weight in the front. I expected Anthony to grind his plane into the earth with his boot. He didn’t. He wanted to make his creation work. The class returned to the classroom to make adjustments, and Anthony added some big flaps to the wings. Our second test flight surprised the whole class. As many of the planes stalled, twisted, and nose-dived, Anthony’s flew straight out from the hillside and landed gently a good 50 yards away.

I’m not writing about Anthony to suggest that I was a good teacher. I wasn’t. In fact, I had quickly dismissed Anthony like many of his teachers before me. At best, I had viewed him as a distraction in my class, and I felt my job was to keep him from sabotaging the experience for the other students. Anthony’s ultimate success was a result of his own motivation, not my instruction.

Anthony’s success wasn’t just his plane. He had succeeded in making me aware of my own failures. Here was a student who was never taken seriously and had developed a bunch of behavioral issues as a result. I never stopped to look for his potential, discover his interests, or get to know the kid beneath the facade. I had grossly underestimated Anthony, and I am grateful that he was able to disillusion me.

I like to think that I’m an open-minded, liberal, and non-judgmental person. Anthony taught me that I’m not there yet.

Critique of Max's Common Application Essay

In general, Max has written a strong essay for the Common Application , but it does take a few risks. Below you'll find a discussion of the essay's strengths and weaknesses.

Essays on important or influential people can quickly become predictable and cliché when they focus on the typical heroes of high school students: a parent, a brother or sister, a coach, a teacher.

From the first sentence, we know that Max's essay is going to be different: "Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model." Max's strategy is a good one, and the admissions folks who read the essay will most likely be pleased to read an essay that isn't about how Dad is the greatest role model or Coach is the greatest mentor.

Also, essays on influential people often conclude with the writers explaining how they've become better people or owe all of their success to the mentor. Max takes the idea in a different direction; Anthony has made Max realize that he isn't as good of a person as he had thought, that he still has much to learn. The humility and self-critique is refreshing.

There's no one rule for writing a winning essay title , but Max's title is perhaps a little too clever. "Student Teacher" immediately suggests a student who is teaching (something that Max is doing in his narrative), but the true meaning is that Max's student taught him an important lesson. Thus, both Anthony and Max are "student teachers."

However, that double meaning is not apparent until after one has read the essay. The title by itself does not immediately grab our attention, nor does it clearly tell us what the essay will be about.

For the most part, Max maintains a pretty serious tone throughout the essay. The first paragraph does have a nice touch in the way that it pokes fun at all the cliché activities that are typical of summer camp.

The real strength of the essay, however, is that Max manages the tone to avoid sounding like he is bragging about his accomplishments. The self-criticism of the essay's conclusion may seem like a risk, but it arguably works to Max's advantage. The admissions counselors know that no student is perfect, so Max's awareness of his own short-comings will probably be interpreted as a sign of maturity, not as a red flag highlighting a defect in character.

The Essay Length

At 631 words, Max's essay is at the upper end of the Common Application length requirement of 250 to 650 words. This is not a bad thing. If a college is requesting an essay, it is because the admissions folks want to get to know the applicant better. They can learn more from you with a 600-word essay than with a 300-word essay. You may encounter counselors who argue that admissions officers are extremely busy, so shorter is always better. This little evidence to support such a claim, and you'll find very few applicants to top-tier colleges (such as the Ivy League schools) being admitted with essays that don't take advantage of the space allowed.

The ideal essay length is certainly subjective and depends in part on the applicant and the story being narrated, but Max's essay length is absolutely fine. This is particularly true because the prose is never wordy, flowery, or excessive. The sentences tend to be short and clear, so the overall reading experience isn't labored.

The Writing

The opening sentence grabs our attention because it isn't what we expect from an essay. The conclusion is also pleasingly surprising. Many students would be tempted to make themselves the hero of the essay and state what a profound impact they had on Anthony. Max turns it around, highlights his own failures, and gives the credit to Anthony.

The balance of the essay isn't perfect. Max's essay spends far more time describing Anthony than it does describe Anthony's influence. Ideally, Max could cut a couple of sentences from the middle of the essay and then develop a little further the two short concluding paragraphs.

It is not easy for parents to make the decision to send their child away into the waiting arms of strangers who promise to take care of them — people who promise to show them the wonders of nature, fun, new skills, and friendships. As a parent of two children, even I struggle with the idea, and I have been around summer camps my entire life.

The world needs the next generation to be more tolerant of each other’s views, ideology, and beliefs. Summer camp is an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of human character. Carefully selected role models are dedicated to showing your child how to have fun, learn from others, and make friends in person rather than online. Camp allows kids to meet people from all over the world, every race, culture, and socioeconomic level. I still remember one of my counselors, Danny, from England, explaining to me, “The world is full of excuses. It doesn’t matter where you came from or what has happened to you. At the end of the day you choose how you treat others.”

There is something magical about a summer camp experience. Each and every camp in the world is different. Not merely because of geography or location, but because of the traditions and people who have touched the camp. Every camp has hidden treasures of history and traditions that give it character and identity. Even with agency camps like the YMCA where there is a common mission, every camp is unique in its style, program, games, geography, traditions, and experience.

Every staff member, alumni camper, and volunteer has memories associated with their time at their camp — memories that stay with them for their lifetime. Most people remember with fondness the coun¬selors, cabins, camp food, camp outs, and special happenings of their time.

Camp is an independent experience that shapes one’s character and life — a controlled, safe environment where chil-dren and youth are able to make their own decisions about simple things (what activity they want to do, how many s’mores they want to make, or what clothes they are going to wear) and about important things (who they will hang out with . . . who will be their friends).

Camp is a place where kids interact with people face-to-face and, at the same time, learn about themselves and others around a camp fire, under the stars, or sitting around a dining hall table. Camp allows the idea of boarding the train to Hogwarts to go from fantasy to reality — children find a world filled with possibilities unavailable to them in everyday life.

Camps give kids a chance to practice being the best they can be. They experience a place designed to create happy memories and encourage self-expression. They have the opportunity to climb towers, ride horses, shoot an arrow, and even experience the success of winning the big game! It stays with them forever. Kids will learn from a full range of emotions and human experi¬ences including homesickness, friendship, disagreements, team work, frustrations, jubilant success, and more.

As parents, our hopes and jobs are to ready our kids to be productive, independent, and capable people — to prepare them to thrive without us. Camp offers a way for kids to start developing those skills in the best possible environment. It makes me a bit sad every time my son runs off to join his cabin group without even a look back . . . and at the same time, I burst with pride watching him growing into a happy, independent, tolerant, open, confident, and capable person. I know that we will have plenty to talk about when he gets home from camp. I also know he will remember the trust and gift of his time at camp, and it will add to him for the rest of his life.

There is so much competition for our children’s time in the summer — sports practices, summer school, well-deserved vacations. But let’s not forget the value of a camp experience — camp is a gift we can give our children that they will benefit from and remember forever. If ever there was a time when the world needed a generation of future leaders who understood the intrica¬cies of living in a community, having toler¬ance, and being open — that time is now.

The personal, social, and physical landscapes that summer camp experiences offer children allow them to better understand their own skills, as well as the capacities of other pupils. Additionally, the camps give the youngsters a chance to grow their independence and self-reliance apart from their family (Smart et al. 2). There is a need for inclusive summer camp programs in Canada because students there come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and have a range of abilities. The inclusive summer camp programs take into account not only the diversity of cultures but also physical and mental disability. Canada is a leader in providing inclusive education and assisting students who have impairments. Inclusion is the hallmark of Canada’s education system. The federal government in Canada has no control over education. The provinces and territories control the education system in their jurisdiction. The special education terms such as mainstreaming and segregation were in use across Canada till the late 1980s (Kendellen et al. 37). The students with disabilities attended the regular school setting either part-time or full-time. Besides, other students living with the disability attended segregated special classes within the regular school or special schools. However, many educational authorities cannot differentiate integration with inclusive education, and they use the two terms synonymously. In inclusive education, the students attend the regular schools and are not segregate them in terms of the type or the degree of their disability. The term inclusion was born in the late 1980s when Marsha Forest and Jack Pearpoint held a meeting in at Frontier College in Toronto, Ontario. They were concerned with the progress of education for people living with disabilities was unsatisfactory under the Special Education Model. They argued that there was insufficient progress both socially and academically. The Special Education Model lacked social justice and failed to appreciate the capabilities of students with disabilities. Marsha Forest and the other people advocating for inclusion referred the model as negatively-based since it emphasized the placement of the students with disabilities in the school system based on their degree of disability. The term inclusion was adopted at the meeting in Toronto following considerable discussions. The Canadian provinces use different terms to refer to students with disabilities. For instance, the provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick consider them as students with exceptionalities while other provinces refer to them as students with special need. Inclusive Summer Camps for Students in Canada The inclusive summer camps in Canada bring together non-disabled students and students living with the disabilities to share and enjoy recreational experiences. The inclusion ideology has increased the opportunities for the students living with disabilities to attend the typical summer camps. The primary objective of the summer camp programs is to provide physical literacy to the participants. In most cases, the programs are organized according to the age of the students (Smart et al. 5). For instance, programs for ages 5-7, 6-8, 7-9, 9-12 as well as additional offerings. The summer camps program can be either day camps or overnight camps. Most of the summer camps offer recreational programs such as multi-sport adventurous camp, wrestling camp, swim lesson camp, superhero training camp, rhythmic gymnastics and dance camps, outdoor Rangers camp, Olympic camp among others. Besides, the camps offer fitness and wellness programs for the adults who accompany the students to the camp. For example, ballet barre, kettlebell, boot camp, Nordic pole walking, and Pilates. The summer camps also offer additional packages to its clients such as fitness assessment and program design. Further, the summer camps offer leadership programs such as a bronze star, bronze medallion along with a bronze cross and assistant instructor (Smith & Lori, 779). The Canadian summer camps attract campers from all parts of the world every summer including the United States. Examples of camps in Canada include Ontario Summer Camps for boys, BC Summer Camps for girls, Camps in Quebec that offer sports camps for kids, Toronto Summer Camps that offer educational camps for children as well as Algonquin Park Summer Camps that provide summer art camps. Comparison of Inclusive Summer Camps Programs for Students in Canada and USA Canada and U.S.A are at the forefront in offering inclusive education. In the US, numerous schools offer inclusive education as compared to Canada. Most of the schools are built in such a way to accommodate the students living with disabilities. The two countries have made remarkable steps in offering inclusive summer camps for students. Every year during summer, the camps offer recreational activities and also enable the students to excel academically. Besides, the camps offer physical and fitness programs to the students. Although Canada offers the summer camps programs every year, there is a lot to be done. The USA has more summer camps which are well equipped to cater for the diverse disabilities. Besides, camping is expensive, and the lower-class people cannot afford. The various summer camps in the USA have developed strategies to enable the students living with disabilities to attend them. Such plans include camp scholarship and a sliding scale of camp fees depending on the family income. In Canada, most summer camps offer recreational and physical fitness programs. However, in the USA, some summer camps such as ISSOS International Summer which has locations in Yale, St. Andrews and Cambridge combines creative enrichment, learning, and action-packed adventure. Besides, ISSOS allows the students to select one elective as well as one academic class to follow during their stay at the camp. Moreover, the camp offers high-quality academic summer school programs to cater for the needs of international students. Unlike most summer schools, ISSOS offer limited places to ensure that all students benefit from the small-sized classes and individual attention (Smith & Lori, 789). In Canada, the needs of children with exceptionalities are catered for since most of the camps offer programs for specific disabilities. For instance, the Ontario Camp in the Niagara region provides for students with autism spectrum disorder while the Camp Awakening in Toronto offers programs for students with physical disabilities. As opposed to the summer camps in the USA, several summer camps in Canada cater for specific disabilities although others provide for various special needs. For example, Camp Concord in Canada offers programs for students above the age of seven who have behavioral, communication and intellectual disabilities. Unlike the US, Canada has several summer camps that provide programs to students with health issues. For instance, Camp Huronda in Huntsville, Ontario offer programs for students with diabetes between the ages of 7 to 16. Barriers to Inclusive Summer Camps Programs for Students Although Canada has made remarkable achievements in offering inclusive summer camps programs, some factors deter the progress. The availability of summer camps to cater for disabilities is still a major concern. Although various parties advocated for the closure of segregated camp experiences, some summer camp wants their names to appear on the Integrated Camp List. For instance, about 20% of the 200 accredited camp administrators in Ontario, Canada refused their names to appear on the Inclusive Camp List. The camps lacked trained staffs and accessible facilities. The opportunities for the students to interact with their peers living with disabilities in summer camps is precarious due to legal standing, financial support as well as public acceptability (Kendellen et al. 42). However, providing separate albeit equal programs and services in the form of public services is regarded to be a discriminatory service in the US according to section 302 of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The inclusion of students with disabilities in programs initially designed for non-disabled students has led to the surfacing of issues of disempowerment, loneliness, and issues of isolation. The students with disabilities lack confidants, playmates, and friends who share their unique perspectives along with their identities. Additionally, the social construction of disability is another barrier to offering inclusive summer camps programs. The basis of the social construction of disability is the social construction theory which affirms that people are responsible for the creation, learning, and sharing of meaning. The language, behaviors along with the objects people use reflect the created perceptions. The society has formed negative perceptions of people living with disabilities, and such attitudes have brought about adverse behaviors towards people with disabilities. Some people associate the inclusive summer camps with people living with exceptionalities negatively. The negative attitude prevents some non-disabled students from attending the inclusive summer camps. Furthermore, the students with exceptionalities face discrimination while attending the summer camps. They feel demoralized and lose the enthusiasm of participating in the summer camp programs. Some instructors at the summer camps assign students with disabilities specific activities while the students without disabilities are given opportunities to choose from a broad range of activities (Kendellen et al. 44). Besides, during creative activities, some instructors place students with disabilities in separate groups and assign counselors to assist them. The exclusion hinders the creativity of such students since they are denied a chance to compete with their able-bodied counterparts. The students with disabilities are also excluded during talent shows. Some summer camps have special seating for wheelchairs at the front of the room during camp talent shows. The students may feel isolated from the rest of the world. Such discriminatory activities at the camp sites hinder the provision of inclusive services. Ways of Making the Summer Programs More Inclusive The summer camps should be more inclusive to promote healthy interactions between the students with exceptionalities with their able-bodied counterparts. Foremost, during learning session at the summer camps, the instructors should pair the students without disabilities with those with disabilities. For instance, during creative art sessions, the instructor can match students with disabilities with the able-bodied ones. Besides, during the camp talent shows, all campers should be allowed to sit with their friends regardless of whether they have exceptionalities (Kendellen et al. 47). The organizers should only make room for those using wheelchairs. By treating all students in the same manner, the ones with disabilities will be encouraged to compete with their able-bodied counterparts. The instructors should ensure that all activities are inclusive since a little tweak can cause differences. During sporting activities at the summer camps, the instructor should give all students equal opportunities in selecting the games. All summer camps should create a culture of inclusion. Some steps may seem insignificant to the camp organizers, but they play a significant role in promoting inclusion. Such measures include giving nametags to the campers as well as the staff. From the onset of the camping, the staff should introduce themselves and great by names. The students will feel cared for, included and relaxed. Most importantly, treat all the campers equally and avoid favoring those with exceptionalities. Secondly, the camp organizers should switch the activities regularly to accommodate the old and the new campers. Moreover, incorporate new games into the camp and various inclusive activities. Lastly, the camp organizers should model inclusive behavior in their camps. Team building exercise can discourage staff and campers clique. Frequent icebreakers work efficiently in discouraging clique among the campers. The leaders can play significant roles in promoting inclusion. The leaders have the power to change procedures and policies that will pave the way for the diverse abilities of students and the society as a whole. The leaders can avail resources to enable the camps to make physical changes in their facilities in order to accommodate all campers regardless of their ability. The Canadian government should also offer training services to the camping staff on inclusion. The leaders can also make powerful statements to the community to change their attitude towards people living with disabilities. Conclusion Conclusively, summer camps offer students with opportunities to try out something different and unique during the summer. The summer camps enable students to participate in a wide range and all-inclusive summer school activities and programs. Besides, the inclusive summer camps allow all students with or without disabilities to enjoy the action-packed and fun-filled course in the academic summer school programs (Smart et al. 9). Moreover, the inclusive summer camps offer various sporting activities for the students with disabilities and the non-disabled students such as fencing and sailing. My Experience on Summer Camp

Here I want to share my own experience on summer camp. Our school had organized a 3 day camp at the nearby hill station. Many of our regular teachers also joined us, in which mentors and tour guides were also included. who were highly experienced in camping activities. We were given special instructions regarding discipline and behaviour, which had to be maintained at the height.

We started our journey by bus where we played team games to socialize with students from other classes. On reaching our destination, we were informed about the various aspects of the camp and everything we had to pay attention to. It was the first multi-day trip without parents for most of us.

It was a challenge as we had to take care of ourselves and our belongings in the absence of our parents, which usually our parents do for us. It taught us to live independently and take responsibility. At the campsite, all the students were divided into groups, and they were asked to help with various tasks such as setting up tents, collecting wood, and arranging food.

These tasks gave us the opportunity to work in teams and get to know each other well. After hard work, we were served simple yet delicious food. After dinner, each of the students cleaned the surrounding areas and helped each other to wash the dishes. These things develop helpful nature in children and inculcate good habit of completing their work on their own.

We were taken to the wilderness to hike and explore nature and its elements. There we were taught about the importance of different flora and we also learned about the local wildlife. We also got a chance to explore the complexity and wonders of nature while hiking in the dense and endless forest.

Throughout the camp, we get an excellent experience of learning and applying life skills. I am very lucky that this time I got a chance to experience because it taught me the value of life. Every parent should ensure that their child spends enough time understanding and exploring nature rather than getting involved in technology all the time. Nature teaches us the concept of simple living and provides peace to our mind in our fast moving life.

Keeping in view the huge difference, this small effort has led to organizing such camps in schools for the development of children in different countries. These aim to ensure holistic development of every child along with academic excellence. Students as well as parents should encourage their children to participate in such camps.

Physical Activity – Summer camp makes them more physically active as they participate in a variety of physical activities such as swimming, hiking, horseback riding, playing outdoor games, and new adventures. They are always active in the camps. It makes them physically strong. It enhances their physical fitness and their ability to challenge themselves.
Opportunity to learn - Summer camps create opportunities for children to learn in many ways whether it is music, dance, science or art. Learning in camps is more effective, as it gives children more practical knowledge and real experience.
Summer Camp is a Break - Summer camps are really exciting and inspiring. Kids get to experience something different instead of continuing with the same old boring routine. It is very important to bring changes in the routine of children. In summer camp, kids have fun and at the same time learn a lot of important things.

Summer camp isn't just for fun. The value of experience is more important. It affects the child in many positive ways. It develops the mental, physical and social potential of children. It provides an opportunity to grow emotionally and socially. They feel independent and their self-confidence also increases. And we know that practical knowledge is better than theoretical knowledge, they will prove better in their life because of their experience. Summer camp teaches them some of life's most important lessons.

Summer Camp Entrepreneur

The first wedding that I planned was in no way a traditional wedding. Ten eager little girls decorated the printed invitations with sequins, buttons, and markers. The same energetic hands prepared the wedding feast, consisting of bagged lunches, blintz souffle, and of course a layer cake. On the big day I looked around with excitement. Again, I noticed something odd about this wedding. All the participants and guests appeared about four feet high. The "groom" had long hair pinned up with brown lines on her face (was that supposed to be a beard?) The wedding location, a back yard with a swing set and a wading pool, seemed far from romantic. This wedding however was not supposed to be one of those types of weddings. As I pressed the "PLAY" button on the tape recorder I knew that ten 4-6-year-old girls cared deeply about this wedding. Despite the absence of a reason for celebration, I pulled all the girls into the circle and we started dancing and clapping to the music. The energy that went into the preparation on previous days could finally be appreciated. My campers and I not only celebrated the accomplishment of the mock wedding, we celebrated the fun and excitement we experienced for the first three weeks in Camp Glitter Girls. I had begun preparing for Camp Glitter Girls over four months before by budgeting, sending out fliers, confirming registration and finally making sure that every camper would have the time of her life. As I danced, I celebrated the times I almost lost my patience but didn't, the times that I planned activities late into the night because I knew that only an organized schedule would ensure the success of my camp.

The lessons I had learned from previous summer camps contributed greatly to this camp's success. At the age of thirteen, I first ran a camp for eight children. The next year a friend and I co-managed a camp for twenty children at a small school campus. Finally at the age of fifteen I created my most challenging summer camp with thirty-five children. In just three years the size of my camp tripled and so did the life lessons. I not only carried the responsibility for my own "bunk," but with my co-manager I hired other counselors, arranged busing to and from field trips, managed a $15,000 budget, and ensured that thirty-five children had a fun summer. The overnight to San Diego, water fun, cheers, a carnival to end the summer and many other events definitely ensured that my campers had a great summer. However, at the end of those six weeks, new ideas floated in my mind about how I would manage a camp next time.

The camp's increased size added new dimensions to management. On one occasion I firmly reminded a mother of her financial obligations to the camp when she started bargaining. When counselors failed to perform as expected I was required to separate friendships and business. With a much wider variety of campers, I dealt with behavioral problems among the campers. This even included involving the parents in the case of two unusually unruly boys. While a troubled girl with attention deficit disorder in my "bunk" needed special attention, I had to make sure that none of my other campers felt slighted in any way. As the summer progressed I learned how sometimes I just have to put my foot down and say "no." Sometimes extra attention is not always best for a difficult child. Most importantly, I had an experience in the real world of business that taught me how to stand up for myself and address interpersonal and administrative problems.

This past summer as I looked around the yard at the beaming faces flushed from dancing, I realized that Camp Glitter Girls was the culmination of all the experiences and lessons in which I partook since my first camp four years earlier. I learned how to make a camp with ten campers far more fun and even more profitable than a camp for thirty-five children. Instead of marketing to a broad range of ages, I marketed Camp Glitter Girls to a specific age group of girls. The smaller group facilitated a close and familiar atmosphere, not to mention a decrease in problems. Instead of focusing on the quantity of campers, I focused on the quality of my campers' experience, and we all reaped the benefits. The mock wedding at my previous camps never exuded the energy and spirit of the one at Camp Glitter Girls. As the dancing subsided and I heard oohs and aahs over the cake, I looked at every single girl in the room. I did not just see cute adorable faces; rather I saw how each girl challenged me in her own way and unconsciously taught me her own special lesson.

As I turn towards my future and make life-defining decisions, I look back upon my experiences with my campers for inspiration and direction. I view my upcoming years at university as an opportunity to further use the skills I acquired in running summer camps. The diversity, academic excellence, and broad array of classes and extracurricular activities at UCLA will provide an environment that will challenge me to use the leadership, initiative, creativity and interpersonal abilities that I used at Camp Glitter Girls.

MJW’s summer writing program selects 10 to 15 students to attend an intensive workshop held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This workshop focuses on multimedia reporting, writing, editing, graphics, photography, and production. During the workshop, students produce an issue of the MJP Journal to showcase everything they’ve learned.

Applicants must submit a high school transcript, a typed 500-word essay explaining their interest in journalism, and a recommendation letter. The program also encourages students to submit samples of published journalistic work , but unpublished writing samples are also acceptable.

#7: Carnegie-Mellon University Writing and Culture Program

Eligibility: Must be at least 16 years old by program start date; must be a current high school sophomore or junior at time of application; must have an academic average of B (3.0/4.0) and/or have received a B or higher in their last English class.
Dates: July 5-August 12
Location: Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA
Cost: $9,000 for residential program; $6,932 for commuter program

The Carnegie-Mellon Writing and Culture Program teaches high school students to think critically and express themselves creatively. This six-week course features classes taught by Carnegie-Mellon faculty, readings and events with local authors, and hands-on visits to Pittsburgh’s museums. Throughout the program, students produce a written portfolio that explores film, art, and culture .

To apply, students must complete an online application that includes a high school transcript, responses to essay prompts, and up to three optional writing samples. If an applicant’s cumulative high school GPA is below a B average (3.0/4.0), submitting writing samples is strongly encouraged.

#8: Iowa Young Writers’ Studio Residential Program

Eligibility: Must be a current 10th, 11th, or 12th grader
Dates: Session 1: June 12-25; Session 2: July 10-23
Location: University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA
Cost: $2,500 for residential
Deadlines: Applications due February 6

The Iowa Writers’ Workshop offers a two-week, residential creative writing summer program for 144 high school students from across the country. Once accepted, students will select a course of study from the following options: poetry, fiction, creative writing, playwriting, or TV writing. Students also participate in writing workshops, receive constructive feedback, and star in open mics and talent shows.

The Iowa Young Writers’ studio acceptance rate falls between 15% and 20% . A competitive application to this program will include a polished writing sample, statement of purpose, letter of recommendation, and high school transcript. Students from outside the United States are also welcome to apply.

UVA Young Writers Workshop is a summer program designed to immerse students in a creative writing genre . Students focus on one of the following for the duration of the program: short form creative writing, poetry, songwriting, screen and playwriting, creative nonfiction, or fiction.

UVA Young Writers Workshop is one of the best summer writing programs for high school students because it offers two program sessions that are geared toward different skill levels . Session 1 is designed for a wider range of skill levels and experience, whereas Session 2 is geared toward more advanced writers. You can apply to both sessions online by submitting several writing samples, a brief autobiography, and a letter of recommendation.

You should mention your extra-curricular achievements as well, but the amount of space that you dedicate to this section should depend on the university or summer course to which you are applying. If you are applying to Oxford or Cambridge , you should keep your extra-curricular activities to a minimum, as these universities are focused primarily on your academic achievements.

Do you need help writing a personal statement closing paragraph? Almost as hard as starting is finishing your University or Summer Program personal statement!

Your final paragraph doesn’t have to be long – just enough to round off your statement and reiterate your interest and dedication to your subject.

As educators leading summer learning programs, we can keep kids learning, engaging and empowering students to finish the unfinished learning and to take their unique skills (and confidence) to the next level. Prioritizing the way forward for learners using summer learning programs as a vehicle can be empowering. Consider these questions as you look for ways to make summer learning more enticing (and effective).

1. What is the instructional purpose of the summer learning program ? Is it remediation, credit recovery, preventing skill regression? Enrichment, extension, or moving ahead? Is it for language immersion? Or is it getting ready for the next grade?

2. Who is delivering the services ? Experienced teachers? Paraprofessionals? Teacher-candidates? Are these teachers who want to be there?

3. What are the expectations for program content ? Reuse school year curriculum? Aligned to standards? New work or a strengthening course? Customized to consider the cultural context of the school and the learners? How will fun be incorporated?

That last question may be the crux of the summer school challenge. Parents want a program that is going to advance their child academically and is also going to allow them to have fun. Learners want to “get it over with,” so if fun can be part of the learning experience, it becomes something different (perhaps) from what happens during the school year.

Based on my experiences as summer school principal, I would say there are a few key ideas that can make the program more enticing for students (and staff).

Time: Consider one class a day for a block period (three hours) for four weeks. It is easy for students who work to plan their schedule, as well as for parents.
Course variety: Offer a range of courses depending on your identified purpose. Include options such as required courses and engaging topics.
Interactive learning: Implement hands-on activities, group projects, and experiments that promote active learning. The block schedule allows time for these. Incorporate educational games, field trips, and guest speakers. If a block schedule is new to staff, offer professional learning on the topic.
Relevant learning: Emphasize the practical applications of the knowledge taught. Show students how the concepts they learn in summer school relate to their life and what comes next in school.
Supportive environment: Maintain small class sizes to allow for personalized attention. Create a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

And, last but not least, if you have a building in your district with air conditioning, and it is possible to hold the summer program there, do so, for everyone’s sake.

My question to school districts is: How could your summer school program look so learners wouldn’t want to miss it?

‘Creative Writing Summer Camp’

Altagracia H. Delgado, also known as Grace, has been in the education field for 28 years. She is currently the executive director of multilingual services for Aldine ISD, in the Houston area. She is also an elected board member of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education:

Commonly, students come to summer school because they have failing grades or have not passed the state assessments during the year. In addition to this, most English learners come to summer school because they need additional time learning their second language or, in middle and high school, they need to recover credits to continue a pathway for graduation.

However, none of these reasons implies that summer school cannot be engaging or fun for students. Investing in enrichment programs that can combine content, credit earning or recovery, and English-language development can be a great way for students to have effective and empowering experiences during the summer school session.

One way in which we have been able to engage high school students in English credit recovery while developing their new language is by developing a creative writing summer camp. This summer session provides students with opportunities to work with an author, develop reading and writing skills while expressing themselves through personal narratives, and to create and develop characters for a play that is performed at the end of the session. This public-performance addition to the camp helps our students practice listening and speaking skills in a more creative way.

Because we wanted our students to have formal and informal speaking practices, in preparing for the play, they also had the opportunity to work on the creation of props, background and costumes while practicing their parts. To close out this experience, students’ parents and guardians and English-learning students in primary grades were invited to attend the high school students’ performance. The incorporation of the final performance really gave our high school students something to look forward to because they understood that they were modeling language for our younger learners.

At the end of the final performance, our primary students were able to interact with the now actors, ask questions, and get their autographs. Feedback from the high school students gave us great insight. They shared that they felt more confident about their language-acquisition skills and expressed pride for being brave in a public space.

We understand that due to the academic load many of our students carry to continue their graduation pathways, sometimes creative outlets are not accessible to them. But what we also have learned from this experience is that when we listen to students’ interests, we can learn how to integrate these into lessons that can become more meaningful to them and stretch them in the learning, while also building their confidence.

We helped develop a summer school program rich in language acquisition for newcomer students. In the state of Texas, the term “newcomer” is used when addressing the language instructional program (Bi/ESL) of students born outside the United States.

Our school district designed a program last summer that included eight days of rigorous oral production using interactive magazines, as well as a parent and student showcase of work. The use of sentence starters and sentence frames was highlighted as one of the strategies to support students in speaking, reading, and writing. Students were able to read and convey their hard work and ideas in an instant thanks to the use of simple sentence-frame starters!

The Summer Language Program was centered on thematic science lessons in which all learners were engineers and designed—to name a few—cars, boats, and roller coasters. One of the final activities was a field trip to the Museum of Natural Science, where students gained experiences and made connections to classroom concepts.

The Princeton Summer Journalism Program (PSJP) selects 40 high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds to participate in its revered program. In the PSJP, students explore current events, listen to lectures, and participate in workshops led by professional journalists and Princeton professors. The program culminates with the publication of a student-produced newspaper, the Princeton Summer Journal . To qualify for the PSJP you must:

Be a junior in high school
Live in the United States and intend to attend college in the U.S.

JCamp is a free six-day program put on by the Asian American Journalist Association that brings together a culturally diverse group of students from across the U.S. Under the eye of veteran journalists and leading media executives, students take part in workshops to sharpen their journalistic skills and gain hands-on experience producing multi-platform news packages for the program’s website. JCamp is not limited to Asian American students; any student with an interest in journalism—like writing for a newspaper or magazine—is encouraged to apply.

3. Iowa Young Writers’ Studio 2 Week Residential Program

This summer program for high school students in California is a unique public-private partnership that was founded by the California State legislature in 1987. 6. Juniper Young Writers Online Writing Lab

9. Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Shared Worlds is a residential program for rising 8th-12th grade students to work under the guidance of renowned fantasy and science fiction writers. 13. Bard College at Simon’s Rock Young Writers Workshop

This program is modeled on the well-known Language and Thinking Workshop all students entering Bard College are required to take. Unlike other creative writing workshops, leaders of this young writers workshop encourage informal, playful, and expressive writing and lean on peer response to develop polished pieces of writing. Students will live, eat, and work on campus, gaining firsthand experience living and learning in a college atmosphere while producing pieces ranging from short stories and poems to brief dramatic works and experiments in creative nonfiction.

Location: Provo, UT

At BYU’s Young Authors Academy, students speak with local and nationally-recognized authors, review each others’ writing, work with faculty in the BYU English department, stay in campus housing, take small-group writing courses, and meet other, like-minded peers. Students can choose from two electives over the program, including Creating Believable Tales and Villains, Flash Fiction, and Breaking News.

17. Fir Acres Writing Workshop

Dates: June 23rd to July 6th, 2024

Location: Portland, OR

Fir Acres writing program takes sixty rising 10th-12th graders from around the country and forms a community of enthusiastic writers on the campus of Lewis and Clark College. Students participate in daily workshops studying and writing under the guidance of Lewis and Clark’s faculty. They also meet and hear from visiting writers and work on their own poetry, fiction, and other writings.

18. LMU’s Beginning Screenwriting Program

LMU’s School of Film and Television offers this program to students looking to enhance their writing skills and learn the elements of screenwriting. 19. Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Writing and Culture Program

Learning will take place both on CMU’s campus and around the city of Pittsburgh. Taught by working journalists, BU’s Summer Journalism Academy gives high school students actual reporting assignments to give them a jump-start into the world of journalism. With both virtual and in-person options, there is something for everyone. There are scholarships and financial aid available for students demonstrating financial need. Students must be a rising 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader in high school to attend. For applicants who get their materials in by March 8th, there is a $400 discount for in-person, and a $200 discount for virtual learning.

From DIY Filmmaking to A Million Lives in the Law and Pop Music as Art & Business, The School of the New York Times offers a wide range of fascinating classes to students interested in journalism. In the heart of New York City, students can spend several weeks learning from experienced journalists working in the field. Scholarship applications are only available until the end of February, so interested students should apply ASAP.

Summer programs—and other extracurricular activities—can help set you apart, particularly at highly selective schools. Though summer break provides you with the most time to explore your passions, it is not the only time. Colleges want to see that you are curious about the world around you and are constantly seeking new learning opportunities.

Instead of participating in a program, you could create your own. Writing a book or mobilizing a team to solve an issue in your local community are examples of independent efforts that look impressive to colleges.

You can show further initiative by taking on internships and paying jobs. Both demonstrate initiative, a career direction, and key life skills like time management and responsibility. Since most internships are reserved for college students and graduates, it can be a challenge to find opportunities for high school students. Teachers working with San Diego Area Writing Project share the belief that writing is a process. Young Writers' Camp engages students in that process and allows them to discover their own style, voice and potential. Our goal is that each young writer, regardless of skill level, has the time and space to experiment in a variety of genres while developing creativity and confidence.

Young Writer's Camp is a 10-day summer program that inspires creative thinking and writing. Students explore writing styles and methods of self-expression with new friends.

Programs are offered for students entering grades 3rd-9th grade. Classes will be split up by grade level bands such as: 3-5, 5-7, 7-9.

Get a strong start on your college application with this series of sessions on the common app and supplemental essays. You’ll learn what makes a stellar essay and how to incorporate key traits that will capture an admissions committee’s attention and heart. The main essay is one of the most important components of the college application. A stellar essay will help a student standout from amongst a pool of competitive applicants. Writing an outstanding essay, however, can be a daunting task. In this seminar, students will learn the answer to questions such as, what are colleges looking for? What do I write about? How creative should I be?

In-Person Session Day 2 Making Every Word Count: Supplemental Essays & Activity List

In addition to the main essay, many colleges require their own school-specific prompts, also known as supplemental essays. Covering popular prompts including the “Why Us?” question and the elaboration of an extracurricular or job-related experience, this seminar will teach students how to best approach various supplemental essays and further illuminate who they are as a person and how they can contribute to a specific college.

The activity list section of the college application provides an applicant the opportunity to describe their passions, skills, and talents. In this portion of the seminar, students will learn strategies to best highlight their accomplishments and activities. Additionally, students will be equipped with the tools to create a strong resume. Although not required by every school, a good resume can aid students with teacher recommendations, college interviews, scholarship applications, and future job or internship opportunities.

It was really enjoyable and extremely helpful overall especially as someone who is applying to colleges the coming school year and is behind on essays!

If you are looking for something different but unique and are not satisfied by the traditional offer of tourist destinations, try looking eastward for a moment. We are not talking about the Far East but just east of Europe and a little further than better-known destinations like Venice or Berlin. We invite you to visit Russia and discover interesting facts about Russia that make this country so special.

Today, Russian tourism is on a rise for a variety of reasons, including great food, cultural heritage, and beautiful cities like Moscow or St. Petersburg. Traveling is supposed to be about exploring new things or meeting new people and this country is a tourist gem waiting to be discovered.

1. Cultural Heritage

Russia might be a part of Europe but for most westerners, it is still a mysterious country with a unique mentality that makes them curious. People in Russia seem like warm, emotional souls who like drinking vodka and eating caviar for breakfast which is not far from the truth. This little prejudice doesn’t really summarize their cultural heritage which is vast and colorful.

2024 evers research fellow chosen .

Keon Burns, a dual doctoral candidate in history and Africana studies at Pennsylvania State University, has been named the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Research Fellow for 2024. Burns will conduct research this summer in the Medgar Wiley and Myrlie Beasley Evers Papers housed at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) in Jackson.

By examining the records and correspondence of Medgar Evers during his time as Mississippi field secretary for the NAACP, among other archival collections at MDAH, Burns hopes to gain insight into the role of Black businesspeople, particularly grocery store owners, and their impact as grassroots activists during the Civil Rights Movement.

“I will use the Evers Papers and other MDAH holdings as the basis for a dissertation chapter that builds off my master’s thesis,” said Burns. “The chapter will highlight the role of Black grocers in the Civil Rights Movement. I will use Mississippi and the grocery industry as a case study for the impact of Black-owned businesses on community organizing, resistance, and uplift.”

The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Research Scholars Program is a collaboration between MDAH and the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute. The program seeks to nurture upper-level graduate students and faculty scholars at the beginning of their academic careers to increase their life-long interest in history, and to promote continued academic and public appreciation of Medgar and Myrlie Evers’s life and works, the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi, and the struggle for human rights.

Burns will use the $5,000 fellowship to cover travel, housing, and other expenses incurred while doing primary research at the archives.
