25 Teacher Cover Letters Examples To Help You Get Hired

Your guide to a killer cover letter that will get you that interview.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples

Whether you are sending out resumes hoping to land your first teaching job or looking to shift to a new school or district, one fact remains the same: All the best credentials, experience, and passion will go unnoticed without a strong cover letter. The main rule? Sell yourself the way a publicist would. Cover letters aren’t a time for modesty. They’re a time to highlight your accomplishments and make your passion for teaching known. Below you’ll find our tips for creating the best cover letter possible and our top teacher cover letter and CV examples.

3 top tips for crafting a teacher CV or cover letter:

Keep it short and sweet..

You’ve only got about 30 seconds to capture a hiring director’s attention, so start with what we call “the elevator pitch.” Imagine you have the time between the elevators closing on one floor and opening again on another floor to sell yourself. Instead of rehashing everything on your resume, use the space to craft a paragraph or two that will convince them you are a standout candidate and are worth moving on to the next step.

Emphasize why you’re a great match.

Read the job description and find the overlap between the skills you bring to the table and the skills they need. If the job description calls for certain qualities or uses specific language, repeat them in your cover letter! The ultimate goal for your cover letter is to say, “You’ve got a problem? I’m the ideal person to solve it.” Be professional and use concrete examples.

Individualize!

Tailor each and every cover letter to fit the specific school, district, and job for which you’re applying. Research the school and its culture. That way, you can address their expectations and also use specific examples of achievements in your history to show why you’re the right candidate for the position.

Here's the step-by-step breakdown:

Teacher Cover Letter Overview: What To Know To Write A Cover Letter That Wins More Job Offers

Wondering what school districts are looking for when they're hiring a teacher?

Districts want knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated teachers that are highly qualified. That means they have the proper education, certifications, and experience along with mastery of their subject, strong classroom management, communication, flexibility, and commitment to student learning.  Professionalism, reliability, and punctuality are also key qualities.

Your resume should show the district that the your experience and personality combined encompass all of these things.

Additionally, there are a few best practices you want to follow to write a job-winning Teacher resume:

  • Highlight your education and certifications:  emphasizing any relevant coursework or specialized training.
  • Emphasize your teaching experience:  providing specific examples of your accomplishments and contributions to student learning.
  • Include keywords from the job description:  ensure your resume is optimized for applicant tracking systems (ATS).
  • Showcase your skills and achievements:  including examples of your ability to manage a classroom, communicate effectively, and use technology.
  • Provide references from colleagues:  or supervisors who can speak to your teaching abilities
  • Proofread: Make sure to thoroughly proofread your cover letter for any grammatical errors or typos. A well-written, error-free letter can make a strong first impression. I recommend using Hemingway App to do this.

Let's dive deeper into each of these so you have the exact blueprint you need to see success.

The Best Teacher Skills To Include On Your Cover Letter

Keywords are one of the most important factors in your cover letter. They show employers that your skills align with the role and they also help format your cover letter for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

If you're not familiar with ATS systems, they are pieces of software used by employers to manage job applications. They scan cover letters for keywords and qualifications and make it easier for the employers to filter and search for candidates whose qualifications match the role.

If you want to win more Teacher interviews and job offers, you need to have a keyword-optimized cover letter. There are two ways to find the right keywords:

1. Leverage The 20 Best Teacher Keywords

The first way to find the right keywords is to leverage our list of the best keywords and skills for an Teacher cover letter.

These keywords were selected from an analysis of  real Teacher  job descriptions sourced from actual job boards. Here they are:

  • Communication
  • Collaborative
  • Development
  • Flexibility
  • Performance
  • Instruction
  • Regulations

2. Use ResyMatch.io To Find The Best Keywords That Are Specific To Your Cover Letter And Target Role

The second method is the one I recommend because it's personalized to your specific cover letter and target job.

This process lets you find the exact keywords that your cover letter is missing when compared to the individual role you're applying for.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples for 2023

Here's how it works:

  • Open a copy of your target Teacher job description
  • Head over to  ResyMatch.io
  • Select the “Job Description Scan” from the scan type selector in the upper right corner of the tool
  • Copy and paste the Teacher job description into the field on the left
  • Hit scan and review the results

ResyMatch is going to scan the target job description and show you the exact keywords and skills that are relevant for the role and that you should weave into your cover letter.

Here's a video walking through this whole process:

Personalization is what makes a cover letter stand out. That starts from the very first sentence where you greet the person reading your cover letter! There are two ways to do this well:

1. Use The Campus Principal's Name

The first, and best, is by including the campus principal's name. Let's say that you discovered the campus principal's name from a post on LinkedIn or via an informational interview.

This is the jackpot! All you need to do is use their name in the introduction, like this:

Example of Starting A Cover Letter With The Hiring Manager's Name

2. Use This Formula: To The [Department] Team at [Organization]

If you don't have the campus principal's name, no problem! You can address your cover letter to the team that you're applying to.

For example, if you're applying to for a Product Marketing Manager role at Discovery Education, you might start you cover letter like this:

Example of Starting A Cover Letter With The Team & Company

This shows the reader that this letter has been written specifically for them and the content inside of it will support that.

It's much more relevant and personal than  “To Whom It May Concern!”

3 Teacher Cover Letter Examples For 2023

Now let's take a look at all of these best practices in action. Here are three cover letter examples for different situations from people with different backgrounds that are all applying for Teacher roles:

Teacher Cover Letter Example #1: A Traditional Background

Our first example is a cover letter written by a candidate with traditional Teacher experience. Here is what an example of their cover letter might look like:

Teacher Cover Letter Example 2023

Teacher Cover Letter Example #2: A Non-Traditional Background

Our second cover letter example comes from a candidate looking to transition from the healthcare industry into a teacher role. This cover letter illustrates how they identify and speak to their transferable skills:

Teacher Cover Letter Example #2

Teacher Cover Letter Example #3: Landing An Elementary Teacher Role Despite Majority Experience in Upper Grade Levels

Our third example highlights a candidate with extensive teaching experience in middle and high school grades, looking to transition to the elementary classroom.

Teacher Cover Letter Example #3

At this point, you know all of the basics you'll need to write a Teacher cover letter that wins you more interviews and offers. The only thing left is to take all of that information and apply it to a template that's going to help you get results.

We made that easy with  our CoverBuild tool . It has 8 proven templates that were created with the help of recruiters and hiring managers at the world's best companies. These templates also bake in thousands of data points we have from the job seekers in our audience who have used them to land job offers.

The Best Cover Letter Templates

You're off to a strong start! But I've got a few more tips to help you take your cover letter to the next level:

1. Use ChatGPT To Write Your Cover Letter In <30 Seconds

All of these tips and best practices work, but you still have to implement them. Normally, that'd mean you sitting down and spending hours brainstorming ideas, typing, deleting, and typing again, and then feeling absolutely drained.

Now there's a way to work around all of that so you save your best energy for the writing and edits that matter most. Here's how it works:

  • Head to ChatGPT (you'll need to create an account – it's free)
  • Ask ChatGPT,  “Please write me a cover letter for an Teacher role. The role I'm applying for is [Job Title] role at [School District]. Here is the job description: [Paste Job Description]. And here is my resume: [Paste Resume].
  • Watch ChatGPT write up a pretty darn good cover letter base!

Here's a video of me doing this with a real cover letter if you want to see the steps in action:

Note:  I  do not recommend or advise that you simply copy and paste the content from ChatGPT into your cover letter and submit your application. ChatGPT is great for doing 80% of the baseline work, but you still need to review, revise, and personalize the content yourself.

2. Include Measurable Metrics And Outcomes

Too many job seekers only focus on the actions that they took and not the outcomes that resulted from those actions. As a campus principal, it's impossible to differentiate between a dozen candidates who were all “Responsible For Creating a Safe Learning Environment.”

If you want to win, your cover letter should speak to the specific outcomes that you drove in previous roles. That could be:

  • The percentage by which your students' content mastery increased
  • The average reduction in behavioral issues
  • The average parent satisfaction rate
  • The rate at which your student engagement increased from year to year

These numbers will show hiring teams what you're capable of and make your value crystal clear!

3. Match Your Cover Letter And Resume Design

Quality Impacts Perceived Value - Car Example

They're the exact same car, down to the year, make, and model. The only difference is the way the product was presented. Like I said, quality impacts perceived value.

One of the best ways to boost the quality of your cover letter is to make it look clean, professional, and have it match your resume. That's why the resume templates in our resume builder tool match the cover letter templates in our cover letter builder:

Matching Cover Letter And Resume

If you use both tools to create your cover letter and your resume, your entire application is going to be top notch.

Key Takeaways To Wrap Up Your Job-Winning Cover Letter

You made it! We packed a lot of information into this post so I wanted to distill the key points for you and lay out next steps so you know exactly where to from here.

Here are the 5 steps for writing a job-winning Teacher cover letter:

  • Start with a proven cover letter template from CoverBuild.io

Student Teacher: Helping Students Achieve Higher Grades On Their Assignemnts resume example

Cover Letter Guide

Student teacher cover letter example, how to format a student teacher cover letter, student teacher cover letter templates, how to write a cover letter as a student teacher, pair your student teacher cover letter with a resume to match, key takeaways.

Student Teacher cover letter

As a student teacher, you do plenty of work that’s invisible to most parents and students.

Besides the regular school day and your studies, you have other responsibilities you need to take care of. Lesson planning, grading, parent communication, faculty meetings, and student’s extracurricular activities are some of the additional tasks. Oh, and add your commute time to the school, which can be an hour every day, to the list of things that sap your time.

It’s no wonder the number of student teachers has plummeted in the past decade. That’s why some states, like Pennsylvania , have introduced a bill that would help you get paid for that teaching position.

On top of all these activities and tasks, the schools will still ask you to write a cover letter and hand it in with your matching resume and a complete application.

Our way of helping you out is by guiding you successfully through the cover letter and application process. Getting that ideal job won’t be a breeze, but it will be way easier if you follow the elements that we’ll present in this article:

  • What are the five essential elements of a great student teacher cover letter.
  • What are the most important things hiring managers focus on when reading your cover letter.
  • How to write the perfect introduction, body, and closing paragraph of your cover letter
  • Why data is the one thing that will make you stand out from other applicants.

Student Teacher resume example

If you want your student teacher cover letter to be this great, you should include the following elements:

It’s essential to format your student-teacher cover letter the right way. According to a study done by Zappia in 2023 , 26% of recruiters always read cover letters. So it’s essential that you write the best possible cover letter to stand out among other candidates.

Student teacher cover letter formatting tips:

What recruiters want to see on your cover letter:.

Let's look at some student-teacher cover letter templates that include these four elements.

When you’re creating a cover letter, you should use a template that’s both professional and situation-specific. There isn’t a “one size fits all” cover letter — you will have to adapt your cover letter when applying for various organizations and institutions.

When to use a simple cover letter template:

Student Teacher resume example

You should use a simple cover letter template in the following situations:

1. When applying to a traditional organization: When applying for a school or an institution with a long history, like the Boston Latin School founded in 1635 , a simple design is the right way to go. When applying for establishments like private schools and religious institutions, follow the same norm.

2. In formal settings: If you’re applying for a position where a high degree of formality is expected, you should write a simple cover letter. Doing this will show the institution that you did your homework (researched the school) and that they can take your application with utmost seriousness.

When to use a modern cover letter template:

Student Teacher resume example

You should use a modern cover letter template in the following situations:

1. Progressive institutions. When applying for schools and institutions emphasizing modern teaching methods, you should opt for a modern design in your cover letter. So think about modern schools like the Florida Virtual Schools, tech-focused schools, and institutions focusing on contemporary pedagogies.

2. Creative positions. When applying to a position involving creativity, you should have a modern cover letter. Send your modern cover letter if you're applying to any job that involves arts, media, design, or music.

Including a date on your student teacher cover letter

When writing your student teacher cover letter, remember to add the date to it.

Use the date of when you’ll be sending your cover letter and here’s the proper way to format the date:

  • Example 1: Month DD, YYYY (for US and Canada)
  • Example 2: DD, MM, YYYY (for Europe and rest of the world)

When writing a student-teacher cover letter, you should follow specific rules that will make your cover letter effective.

Creating the header on your student teacher cover letter.

There are certain elements that your student teacher cover letter needs to have. They are:

  • contact info (email, phone, Linkedin)
  • position that you’re applying for

There are also certain elements that your student teacher cover letter shouldn’t have. They are:

  • Your picture. You shouldn’t put your picture on the cover letter . As a matter of fact, including a picture might be seen as an infringement of personal privacy laws in some countries.
  • Links to your social media accounts such as Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram. This information isn’t required on your cover letter and it could make you look unprofessional.

Student teacher cover letter salutations:

There are also a couple of salutations that you shouldn’t use when writing your cover letter. They’re either too formal, outdated, or way too informal:

  • Hello/Hey/Hi with an exclamation mark (!). An example would be Hello!
  • Dear Sir or Dead Madam.
  • To Whom It May Concern.

How to write an introduction to your student teacher cover letter

The following tips can help you write an introduction section of your student teacher cover letter:

  • Show your excitement for the position.
  • Provide data/results.
  • Provide relevant experience for the position.
  • Frame the letter so the institution gets what it wants (solve their problem first).

Here’s an example of an introduction section of a cover letter:

The experience I had teaching at the Miami Dade College ( a bilingual university ) will make me the perfect match for the opportunity at John Muir Language Academy. As a bilingual teacher, I'll be able to connect with students of the school who learn in both English and Spanish languages.

What makes this introduction great is that the teacher had experience teaching at a university in Spanish language and can translate that experience into a bilingual (Spanish/English language) school.

How to write a cover letter for a student teacher job

The following tips can help you write the body section of your student teacher cover letter:

  • Elaborate on your most relevant achievement with numbers (data).
  • Present your qualifications and expertise, but don’t copy the info from your resume.
  • Connect your experience with the role they’re looking for.

Here’s an example of the body section of a cover letter:

…One particular instance that stands out is when we noticed some students have problems understanding the tasks. Instead of blindly following the curriculum, we adapted our teaching style to ensure they understood these abstract concepts.

So we created visual presentations of the tasks, making them appear more tangible. This shift in perspective helped the students follow along and provided better results. The SAT scores improved by 40% for the entire group.

This experience showed me that I constantly need to innovate in teaching to ensure all students comprehend the matter that’s being presented.

How to write the closing paragraph of your student teacher cover letter

The following tips can help you write the closing section of your student teacher cover letter:

  • Write a clear call-to-action (CTA)
  • Reiterate why you’re the ideal candidate
  • Thank the person who invested their time to read the cover letter

Here’s an example of the closing section of a cover letter:

…I am confident that my innovative approach to teaching will be a great addition to the contemporary pedagogies you use in the classroom. I would be grateful if we had the opportunity to discuss the details in an interview.

Thank you for reading my letter.

Including an enclosure on your student teacher cover letter

When adding an enclosure to your cover letter, make sure to:

  • Prepare all the additional documents, such as a resume or recommendation letter
  • Limit the documents to the relevant ones
  • Write that you have an enclosure on your cover letter

Here’s how an enclosure looks like:

Enclosures:

How to sign your student teacher cover letter

You should keep your signature at the end of the cover letter:

  • Simple and straightforward.
  • Add your current position, or if you don’t have any at the moment, add the one you’re applying for.
  • Use professional signatures such as Sincerely, Regards, or Best.

A good example would be:

When sending a cover letter, it would be beneficial if you had a matching resume. This would make a good impression on the hiring manager.

So when writing your cover letter, make sure that it matches the color schemes, fonts, and style you used when creating your resume.

Let’s summarize:

  • Use data and numbers when explaining your achievement in the cover letter.
  • You shouldn’t repeat the information from your resume in your cover letter.
  • Make sure your cover letter has all five essential elements (header, salutation, introduction, body, and closing section).
  • There’s not a “one size fits all” cover letter. Use modern and simple cover letters appropriately.
  • Ensure that your cover letter and resume match in fonts, style, and color schemes.

Benjamin Brown Coppell Independent School District 123 Fictional Lane Dallas, TX 78660

Dear Mr. Brown:

I am captivated by Coppell Independent School District’s unwavering dedication to academic excellence and inclusiveness, as evident by your impressive state test scores and expansive student population. It is commendable that your school excels in cultivating well-rounded students and promoting a diverse learning environment. Being EC-6 Standard certified, I am excited to contribute to your mission as an elementary teacher, leveraging my strengths in educational technology integration and special education strategies.

During my 2014-2019 tenure at Walnut Hill Elementary School, I was instrumental in the school’s growth to a score of 87%. This was achieved by implementing new digital learning platforms that increased reading proficiency by 8% within two semesters. Employing proven special education strategies, I led a class of 22 students, 32% with learning disabilities, in exceeding their growth targets by an average of 18%.

At Willian B. Travis Academy, I took charge of blending learning models, resulting in a 7% better student engagement rate in my classroom. Furthermore, I emphasized digital literacy across all subjects and grades. This initiative introduced students to essential 21st-century skills, enabling a 14% improvement in their performance on state tests in tech-based assignments.

The Coppell Independent School District’s emphasis on a comprehensive, inclusive educational approach is commendable and is what drives my interest in becoming a part of your esteemed faculty. My motivation to see every child thrive and commitment to utilizing technology for inclusive learning would further elevate the school’s academic standing. I would be thrilled to discuss how my background and abilities align with your needs and contribute to the Coppell Independent School District’s vision of academic excellence. I appreciate your consideration, and I am eagerly awaiting your positive response.

Willam Williams Manatee County School District 123 Fictional Lane Tampa, FL 34787

Dear Mr. Williams,

Growing up in the culturally rich city of Tampa, FL, with regular visits to the Tampa Museum of Art with my family, nurtured my love of art. That sparked my journey into becoming an art educator. With seven years of practical experience in elementary education, not to mention my knack for and specific skills in art critique, photography, and sculpting, I am naturally drawn to the Elementary Art Teacher position at the Manatee County School District. What could be better than instilling in students the same love and understanding of art that profoundly impacted my life?

At Roland Park K-8 Magnet School, I spearheaded art analysis sessions, pushing a 32% growth in students’ comprehension of art history. My photography and sculpting skills weren’t left on the shelf either, playing a notable role in the annual school art fair, which saw a 12% surge in student participation last year.

It’s not all about artistic proficiency, though. Classroom management? I’ve got that down too. At Mabry Elementary School, I employed Google Classroom to enhance learning in a class of 37 pupils. The result was a 9% jump in student performance. I strive for engaging and effective lessons, an approach that boosted homework submission rates by 8.9%.

I’m thrilled to bring my proficiencies to the Manatee County School District. With a passion for art that’s off the charts, a steady dedication to teaching, and a knack for helping kids learn, I’m confident I can make a real impact on your students’ learning journey. Thanks a ton for considering my application. I’d love to chat more about how I might fit into Manatee County School District’s future plans.

  • But again, your employer prioritizes results. So, demonstrate proficiency in relevant hard skills complemented by key soft skills like reliable interpersonal and communications skills, highlighting the impact they brought in your previous roles.

123 Fictional Avenue Seattle, WA 98063 (123) 456-7890

Olivia Martinez Renton School District 123 Fictional Lane Seattle, WA 98063

Dear Ms. Martinez,

Responding to your call for an elementary music teacher who can spark excitement for music among young learners, I couldn’t help but feel excited to jump on board and rock this role. The Renton School District’s commitment to cultivation and artistry is music to my ears and strikes a chord with my teaching philosophy. It’s alarming that only 20% of elementary school students receive regular music education. On a high note, though, my teaching methods have seen 43.7 percent of my students not just excel in their musical pursuits but score higher in academics too.

My teaching philosophy emphasizes igniting students’ enthusiasm for music. Students gain a deeper understanding and connection with the subject through exposure to various music genres and their practical applications. And did I mention my vocal techniques got me the fun gig of directing the Seattle Children’s Chorus? We witnessed 29% more annual concert attendance. Plus, collaborating with Seattle theater groups as a music arranger and composer increased audience attendance by 22%.

Being aware of how abstract music can seem all sorts of mysterious to young learners, I orchestrate practical activities that make the subject tangible. You might stumble upon me and the literature teacher composing a musical adaptation of the children’s book of the week or working together with the science class, using music to demonstrate how soundwaves function. Often, the kids only realize they’ve been making music once we discuss the activity’s outcomes.

Engaging elementary students’ interest in music takes much more than just acknowledgment. From my experience, the initial challenge often unlocks a shipload of treasures. Those early stages of confusion often lead to the most rewarding accomplishments. If these experiences resonate with you, I would be delighted to share more about my teaching methodologies and what Renton School District can expect from my active, engaged musical instruction. Thank you for considering my application.

Mateo Manuel

  • Let your elementary music teacher cover letter reflect your experience teaching kids and your enthusiasm for music. Subtle casualness is excusable here, as it goes a long way to put the recruiter at ease.

Writing your greeting and introduction

So . . . who are you writing your cover letter to? You should know! Always put in the effort to address your letter to a specific person when you can, and greet them formally.

After your greeting, you want to follow with a strong opener that will grab any reader’s attention: How are you qualified to improve children’s lives as an Elementary teacher? Use some unique self-descriptors here that you won’t repeat later.

And be specific! Say why an institution should hire you and give a lightning-quick example of your proven abilities. Don’t just open your letter out of nowhere and claim to be a good hire:

Hope you’re doing great. I’d be a great teacher for your kids since I’ve worked in Elementary schools before.

This greeting and opener are way better since they address the specific school and subject. Here we also see a hook at the end, which is super helpful. What intriguing teaching methods might those be?

This opener’s a winner!

Building your body paragraphs

Each body paragraph in your Elementary teacher cover letter is a new opportunity to impress your dear reader! Since your letter should remain brief, theme each paragraph around one specific accomplishment.

You can share an impressive credential you’ve earned, like a Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE) certificate, with a bit of backstory about the diligence you employed to get it. Or you can describe a situation when you left a measurable impact on your students, like a grade boost.

It’s really important to tailor these points to the job description by answering specific calls and obstacles they mention. How can your Elementary teaching skills solve their problems?

Example of a nice body paragraph:

At Roland Park K-8 Magnet School, I spearheaded art analysis sessions, pushing 32% growth in students’ comprehension of art history. My photography and sculpting skills weren’t left on the shelf either, playing a notable role in the annual school art fair, which saw a 12% surge in student participation for the year.

Closing and signing off your cover letter

Use the closing paragraph to summarize once again why you’re a great hire. Again: Don’t repeat yourself when you could slip in another quick reason or two for your interest in the job, and how you’ll benefit the school.

Always include a call to action after summarizing how you align with the job role and its values. Invite the reader to contact you for more details about your abilities!

And always thank the reader for their time, either within your final paragraph or as the signoff before your signature. If you’ve already said “Thank you” in your closer paragraph, use an equally formal closing line along with your real, full name.

For example, don’t seem disengaged, vague, and indifferent like this:

Oh boy . . .

Thanks for reading. Hope you hire me since you’ve seen what I can do.

Check out how much better it looks when you address the institution and its values, describing how you align with them and displaying enthusiasm for the role.

That’s better!

I’m thrilled to bring my proficiency to the Manatee County School District.

Just one page! You know the groans that come when you hand out multi-page assignments, and honestly, recruiters probably feel the same way! Just as you keep to a one-page resume , so too with your cover letter for a quicker read.

Check the job description (including anything posted on LinkedIn or other professional social media accounts)! Check the company website! A little bit of digging can really pay off.

That same research you did to find out who to address your cover letter to can help you again now! If the job ad doesn’t contain some solid indicators of current company obstacles and teaching values, the website probably will.

5 Steps for the Perfect Elementary Teacher Cover Letter

You've got a clear picture now of what a good cover letter looks like, and you're ready to write your own !

Just remember, it's about following easy steps to make a letter that shows who you are.

Let’s get started:

#1. Put Contact Information in the Header

Starting your elementary teacher cover letter right means you need to include important contact details at the top. Just like you would write it on your resume , use the header of your cover letter.

Here's what to include:

  • Full Name. Your name should be at the top.
  • Job Title. Make sure it matches the teaching position you're applying for. With many applications for different roles at the same school, being clear is important—you want to make sure the principal knows if you’re a music teacher or a chemistry teacher.
  • Email Address. Choose a professional email. A good format is your first and last name, like [email protected] , and avoid quirky ones like [email protected] .
  • Phone Number. List your number here. If the job is in another country, include the international dialing code.
  • Location. Your city and state or country are enough. If you're open to remote work or relocating for the job, make that clear.
  • Relevant Links (optional). You can add links to your LinkedIn or any other professional websites you have.

Next, you'll need the hiring manager's contact information :

  • School or Company Name. Write the name of the school you're applying to. If you’re applying to a privately owned organization, the same rule applies.
  • Hiring Manager's Name. Try to find out who this is. Look at the job listing or the school's website—nine times out of ten, it’s the principal.
  • Location. Add the city and country where the organization is based. You can also include the street name and number if you want to be more specific or it has more than one campus location.
  • Date of Writing (optional). For an added touch of professionalism, add the date you’re writing your cover letter.

#2. Address the Hiring Manager

After you've included all the important contact information, it's time to choose the right greeting for the person who'll be reading your letter.

Forget the outdated "To Whom It May Concern." A more personal greeting starts things off on a friendlier note.

First, do a little research. Check the job posting, the school's website, or their LinkedIn to find the name of the person hiring for the elementary teacher position.

Use formal titles like "Mr." or "Ms." followed by their last name. If you're not sure about their gender or marital status, just use their full name. For example:

  • Dear Mr. Johnson,
  • Dear Alex Johnson,

If you can't find the hiring manager's information, direct your letter to the department or the school in general.

  • Dear School X,
  • Dear Hiring Team,
  • Dear Human Resources,
  • Dear School Staff,

#3. Write an Eye-Catching Opening Statement

School principals and hiring committees often only take a short time to look over a job application before deciding if they should read it in depth.

To catch their attention, you need to make a strong impression with the opening paragraph of your cover letter right away.

Begin by introducing yourself and explaining why you're interested in the specific elementary teacher role. A bit of enthusiasm for teaching or the school itself can make the hiring team curious to know more about you.

If you have teaching experience, start your cover letter with a highlight from your career or a skill that makes you a great choice for the role.

It's really helpful to learn about the school beforehand. The more you know, the better you can show that you'd be a great fit. This tells the hiring team you're not just sending out your resume to every school, but that you're specifically interested in their school.

But remember to keep it short. Your aim is to get the hiring team interested, so they'll want to read on.

#4. Use the Cover Letter Body for the Details

The body of your cover letter as an aspiring elementary teacher is your chance to dive deep into why you're a great fit for the teaching position.

Here, it’s a mistake to just repeat what's on your resume . Use this part of your cover letter to expand on how you've achieved specific successes in your teaching career or to explain any gaps in your employment or how you acquired a key skill for teaching.

Use this section to highlight achievements that show you're perfect for the teaching role. Look at the job advertisement for clues. For example, if the ad emphasizes "innovative teaching methods," you might talk about how you've successfully implemented creative lesson plans in a past role that significantly improved student engagement and learning outcomes.

Tailoring your cover letter to the specific school and role is crucial. If the school is known for its focus on STEM education, discuss how you excel at integrating technology into your lesson plans and give an example. If the job ad mentions a need for "strong classroom management," share a story about how you effectively handled a challenging classroom situation.

Being knowledgeable about the school you're applying to can set you apart. If you're impressed by their approach to holistic education or their award-winning arts program, mention it. This shows that you resonate with their educational philosophy and goals.

Don't forget to express your excitement. Make it clear you're thrilled at the prospect of joining their team and confident in your ability to make a positive impact at their school.

Not sure how long your cover letter should be? Read this article to find out!

#5. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Concluding your elementary teacher cover letter effectively can really make a lasting impression. This is your chance to leave the hiring committee with a positive final thought about your application.

Wrap up your cover letter by reiterating your strongest points. Quickly remind them why you're the right person for this teaching role, whether you can engage diverse learners or your proven track record of enhancing student performance through innovative teaching methods.

Next, encourage the hiring manager to take the next step, like arranging an interview. This demonstrates your initiative and eagerness to progress in the hiring process.

Finish with a professional sign-off. Close your cover letter with a respectful and straightforward line, followed by your full name.

Please feel free to contact me at my email or phone number to set up an interview. I am keen to explore my application further at a time that suits you.

Warm regards,

Jennifer Donnally

And, if "Warm regards" feels too informal, here are some other options:

  • Best regards,

We teenage Tennessee students beg Gov. Bill Lee to veto bill that will arm our teachers

"we are hurt by this bill, and we beg our lawmakers and call on our governor to do everything in their power to keep guns out of schools.".

teaching cover letter to students

  • Scroll to read the names of the letter signers.

When we, the students of Tennessee, saw that SB1325 was approved in the full Senate , it felt in some ways like we had been handed a death sentence.

SB1325 , more commonly known as the arming teachers bill, states that, in most cases, a faculty or staff member who has gone through 80 hours of training can carry a firearm on school property.

As a credit to its main sponsor Sen. Paul Bailey, R-Sparta, it is absolutely stricter with new amendments than it was when it was originally introduced in January of 2023.

One of our worst nightmares is this bill, or a companion bill in the House, being signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee. The fact of the matter is when guns are in schools, kids die. We feel that our right to live has been stripped away, and we worry for the elementary schoolers in our beloved state.

We sit in those classrooms. It is a horrific reality that maybe on purpose and maybe by accident, students will get hold of guns poorly stored or not watched by teachers when they are in classrooms. One of the more commendable components to SB1325 is that it states a gun cannot be brought into a filled auditorium or gym. Where would the gun go instead?

Lawmakers, please visit schools, and learn from our students so we can grow together. We know that this bill was paved with the best intentions, but it’s undoubtedly faulty.

We are hurt by this bill, and we beg our lawmakers and call on our governor to do everything in their power to keep guns out of schools.

We have come to schools to learn, not to bleed. Yet, this bill feels like a death sentence. If we do nothing now, we are deeply concerned for the lives of the students who will come after us as they stare down the barrel of the gun labeled SB1325.

Demand for student-teacher stipends in Pennsylvania far exceeds $10 million allocation

A group of young children sit around a round table as their teacher teaches them using a model of the solar system.

This story was originally published by the Pennsylvania Capital-Star

Within three hours of going live, more than 3,500 applications were received for a state-funded stipend to cover an otherwise unpaid semester of student teaching. But the new program only has enough funding for roughly 600 to 700 student teachers who will take over Pennsylvania classrooms as part of their teaching certification this winter or next spring.

The funds, up to $15,000 per student teacher, will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

“[The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency] is so happy to be a partner with the Shapiro Administration and of the General Assembly on the rollout of the new PA Student Teacher Support Program,” said Bethany Coleman, a spokesperson for the agency, in a statement. “By providing financial support to support teachers we are not only investing in the future of education, but also addressing the critical teacher shortage in this Commonwealth.”

The stipends are a big deal for prospective student teachers like Amber Bloom, who advocated for the program as the vice president of the student branch of the Pennsylvania State Education Association.

On Thursday morning, Bloom was refreshing her browser as the application period opened. She knew there would be more applicants than available stipends, but was still surprised by the speed and number of applicants. Without the money, Bloom will have to take out an additional loan to cover her expenses.

“We all need this money,” she said. “We need it for gas, we need it for food, we need it for tuition. So we’re all hopeful that we’re one of the [roughly] 700 that get it, but realistically, not all of us are going to.”

Allie Taffera, 21, will be a student teacher in a northeast Pennsylvania classroom next spring.

“Getting it would be such a big relief for both me and my family — I’m a first generation college student,” Taffera said. “If I don’t get it, for me that would just mean a lot more work I’d have to do on top of summer classes, and now also trying to keep a job while student teaching.”

But when she heard about the number of applicants, she was excited too. It meant word got around about a program that could change recipients’ lives. And when Taffera replaces Bloom as vice president of student PSEA, she’ll push lawmakers to increase funds.

Bloom and Taffera expect to find out this summer at the earliest whether their applications are accepted.

The applications opened only a day after Gov. Josh Shapiro, alongside Sens. Ryan Aument, R-Lancaster, and Vincent Hughes, D-Philadelphia, and Reps. Gina Curry, D-Delaware, and Jesse Topper, R-Bedford, asked for a 50% increase in funding for next year at a press conference marking the $10 million program’s launch. The legislature would have to approve the additional $5 million through the budget process. That would still fall far short of meeting the demand on the first day of applications. Legislation creating the program passed last year with bipartisan support.

“As Governor Shapiro has made clear, this is a commonsense, critically important initiative with broad bipartisan support — and it is positive to see such high demand for it,” said Manuel Bonder, a spokesperson for Shapiro’s office. “The Shapiro Administration looks forward to having further conversations with leaders in both parties about how to deliver a needed increase in this grant funding as we work to continue building our teacher workforce and delivering the resources Pennsylvania students and families need.”

Aaron Chapin, president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, a teachers union that also represents around 7,100 student members, said the number of applications is proof of both the program’s success and the need for increased funding in the future.

“Unfortunately, this astonishing demand means that most students who applied for stipends won’t get them, because there is only $10 million available for the program this year,” Chapin said. “This is the best possible evidence that lawmakers and Gov. Shapiro need to increase funding for the program in the 2024-25 state budget.”

Chapin estimated that providing stipends for every student teacher in the state would require roughly $75 million.

As it stands, most would qualify for $10,000 to cover their semester of work. Though those placed in high-need schools with teacher shortages or low numbers of student teachers could qualify for an additional $5,000.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency still encourages hopeful student teachers to submit applications, though it is unlikely they will receive a stipend.

Nineteen California college students arrested over pro-Palestine protests

Pomona students charged for art protest as three expelled, one suspended and 20 on probation in Tennessee for Vanderbilt sit-in

Eighteen students at Pomona College in Claremont, California, were arrested on Friday and charged with misdemeanor trespassing, and one student was arrested for obstruction of justice, according to the Claremont police department, during a protest in response to the removal of pro-Palestinian art on the college campus.

Students criticized the heavy police response to the protest, as law enforcement officers from Claremont, Pomona, Azusa and La Verne responded to the scene in riot gear.

Organizers of the protest, Pomona Divest Apartheid, said demonstrators entered Alexander Hall on campus in protest of an “apartheid wall” of artwork from students supporting Palestine being removed after being up since 28 March.

Pomona College student Diana Truong told CBS News in response to the police presence after spending a night in jail: “We believed we were doing what was right, in terms of advocating and supporting each other.”

The student government at Pomona College voted in February 2024 to divest all school investments from Israeli apartheid, which was opposed by the school’s president, Gabrielle Starr. More than 75% of student voters voted in favor of five propositions on divestment at the school, including ceasing all academic support for the state of Israel, and voting for the college to divest from all companies tied to Israel and all weapons manufacturers.

In a letter on Friday in response to the protest, Starr wrote: “Any participants in today’s events on the SCC lawn or in Alexander Hall, who turn out to be Pomona students, are subject to immediate suspension. Students from the other Claremont Colleges will be banned from Pomona’s campus and subject to discipline on their own campuses. All individual participants not part of the Claremont Colleges community are hereby banned from campus immediately.”

The arrests were the latest campus protests where students faced discipline and arrest over the conflict in Gaza .

Meanwhile, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, three students were expelled, one suspended, and 20 were given probation over their involvement in a sit-in protest on 27 March for Palestine at the campus’s Kirkland Hall. The protest was in response to the school administration removing an Israel divestment question from student ballots.

The students are currently appealing the disciplinary actions by the school.

after newsletter promotion

A local reporter for Nashville Scene, Eli Motycka, was arrested during the sit-in protest and has challenged the school’s claim surrounding his arrest and is demanding an apology.

Dozens of faculty members have signed onto a letter criticizing the Vanderbilt administration’s responses to the protest and demanding the school rescind all suspensions, expulsions and arrests.

“We reject the implied characterization of student protest activity as a threat to community or institutional safety,” the letter said. “We call on the administration to repeal all suspensions and criminal charges against the students and immediately reinstate their access to campus housing, meal plans, healthcare, and educational activities.”
