Good morning to one and all present here. I am glad to be given the opportunity to present a speech on Save Environment. Our environment is where we live. There must be harmony between the environment and living beings. In the present scenario, due to overpopulation, the environment is under distress. The situation is alarming as our natural environment is overexploited to meet human needs. It is because of many human activities that we are not able to maintain a healthy balance with nature.

The threat we are facing includes manmade disasters and global warming. These threats are real and have raised an alarming situation. We need to come together to save our environment. This speech on saving nature throws light on why it is needed by mankind to protect and preserve the environment. Our environment offers everything from clothing, water, food to shelter. All living beings are a part of the ecosystem. Hence, it becomes our responsibility to take care of the natural habitat.

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest issues that the modern world faces today. To meet the wants of society, we are putting too much pressure on the natural environment. This leads to damage to nature. The soil is losing its fertility, and in most places, soil pollution makes it difficult to grow crops. Even air and water pollution is the effect of mass urbanization and industrialisation. Controlling the pollution is a need of the hour, however, this still gets neglected by us. I am delivering the speech to save the earth to make you aware of what can be done by each one of us sitting here. We can make our earth a better place to live by taking simple steps like planting a tree, throwing waste in proper bins, saying no to plastic bags, etc. Rather than complaining about pollution, such small steps must be taken to make our environment sustainable.

Environmental problems are also the result of vast technological advancements in the last few years. The overuse of resources to build IT infrastructure is responsible for the loss of the natural environment. Government and international organizations must take proper steps to control pollution and save our mother earth. Environmental protection policies must be strictly enforced. Everyone has to come together to save our mother nature. 

Saving our environment is much more important today than ever before. The degrading quality of earth life is what we all are familiar with. However, the early signs of the upcoming destruction are visible. The harsh weather conditions, increased carbon dioxide emissions, melting of glaciers, etc. are the major concerns that needed immediate attention. Let us all do what we can to save our environment and preserve our resources for future generations.

Good morning to all. Today, I am going to give a short speech on saving the environment. We are all aware of how the environment is important to us. We cannot afford to harm the environment any longer. In today’s modern world, our planet earth is affected significantly. However, if we want to live in harmony with nature, we cannot put the entire pressure on the environment. Living beings, for their survival, depend completely on the natural and manmade environment. It is impossible to live without the resources that the atmosphere provides. In such a situation, it becomes critical to save mother nature from getting over-exploited due to the increasing population. 

We all know that factors like overpopulation, deforestation, etc. are responsible for environmental destruction. Small steps taken by us can go a long way. We must try to use as much public transport as possible to protect the air we breathe. We must throw garbage in the right bins so that proper disposal of waste and waste management can be done. We need to make efforts in the right direction to conserve our natural resources and habitat. Some of the ways by which we can achieve this are to use renewable energy, avoid plastic bags, plant more trees etc. 

Mother nature offers so much to us. We must protect the environment and nature and be a part of sustainable development programmes.

A heartfelt welcome to each one present here. I am here to deliver a speech on saving the environment and saving a life. It is no hidden fact that our environment is affected largely due to human activities. It is facing a threat at an alarming rate. We have over-exploited nature due to our greed. This has caused a natural imbalance. However, we can still do something and protect our environment from all the damages. We must plant more and more trees, throw garbage in the dustbins, avoid using plastic bags, etc. It cannot be denied that our natural environment is such an important part of our ecosystem. It is important to educate people about how the environment is getting damaged. Then only we can have green earth to live in.

Main Causes of Environmental Degradation

Pollution, in any form, is destructive to the environment, whether it be in the form of air, water, land, or noise.

Rapid population increase limits natural resources, resulting in environmental degradation.

Increasing population equals more need for food, clothing, and housing. More land is needed to grow food and provide housing for people. Deforestation occurs, as a result, contributing to environmental degradation.

Deforestation is also caused by using forest areas for agriculture, livestock grazing, fuelwood harvesting, and logging. When forest size decreases, deforestation contributes to global warming by releasing carbon into the atmosphere.

The exhaust gas released by industries is one of the primary sources of pollution. Lead is found in large concentrations in the environment due to a range of substances such as gasoline, paints, ceramics, and batteries.

In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of private vehicles. The higher the number of cars, the higher the rate of pollution that causes smog. Lower-level ozone, which is detrimental, is caused by hydrocarbons emitted by engines.

Speech on plant trees, saving mother earth is important for students as it will make them aware of how to use natural resources and how a healthy balance can be maintained between the environment and human life.

Various social media platforms can be used as tools to assist you in educating more people. The number of environmental challenges appears to be infinite, and while they are all crucial, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Choose one subject to concentrate on at a time.

3. What are the most important methods to conserve the environment?

Reduce the amount of waste you generate. Conserve natural resources and landfill space by following the three "R's" that are – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Deforestation must be controlled or, ultimately, stopped.

The less water you consume, the less drainage and wastewater end up in the ocean.

Afforestation must be fostered, and public awareness must be promoted.

Energy-efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas release. Also, flip the light switch off when you leave the room.

Fuelwood and timber wood should be used wisely.

In your house and office, use non-toxic materials.

We should maintain grazing lands and produce cover crops to keep soils from blowing away.

Using public transportation, walking, or riding a bike to class are all preferable options that assist the environment, save money, and provide exercise.

The environment offers us a variety of producing resources, both renewable and non-renewable. It offers food, shelter, and air, as well as meeting all human needs.

Agriculture and the growing of crops and vegetables are facilitated by the ecosystem. Our waste products were thrown away and composted for use in agriculture.

Human life would not survive without the sun, water, air, and soil that make up the environment. It helps to keep life going by ensuring genetic variation and biodiversity.

Mountains, lakes, rivers, deserts, and a plethora of other amazing natural components are only beautiful because the environment exists.

The environment offers us fertile land, clean water, fresh air, animals, and a variety of other necessities for survival.

We rely on the environment for our fundamental requirements.

The relationship between the environment and all living things are maintained in a healthy natural cycle.

The well-being of the environment, which supports the survival of humans, marine life, and mammals, is significantly impacted by human societies.

The world we live in is affected by deforestation, pollution, the extinction of many species, and rising temperatures.

Uncontrolled environmental exploitation is a result of an ecological disaster.

Everyone must prioritise keeping the environment clean.

One must propagate information about the value of a clean, green environment and plant more trees.

Utilising products from recycled sources is one of the finest methods to keep our environment clean.

Oil, natural gas, coal, and other resources must not be used. Instead of using finite resources, we can employ renewable resources like wind, biomass, and sunlight.

Our natural surroundings are referred to as our environment; life originates there. Environment has an impact on every aspect of our lives. It determines how to live and grow and develop in the right ways. Our social lives can be good or awful depending on how well our natural environment is maintained. The atmosphere in which we live has an impact on the needs that humans have for food, water, shelter, and other necessities. Between the environment and the life of people, plants, and animals, there is a balanced natural cycle. The degradation of the natural environment, which harms life on our planet, is due primarily to human society. Every human action directly impacts modern society's entire ecosystem.

Issues like urbanization, deforestation, etc., cause environmental damage. We can make a big difference with our small actions. To conserve the air we breathe, we must make an effort to use public transportation as much as feasible. We must take the proper steps to preserve our natural resources and habitat. Using renewable energy, avoiding plastic bags, planting more trees, and other measures are a few ways we may do this. Nature has so much to offer us. We must participate in programmes for sustainable development while preserving the environment and nature.

Long Speech On Environment

All living things and the habitat in which they live make up our environment. Long-lasting sustainability is a sign of a healthy environment. Everybody's life comes from it. It sets everyone's course in life and dictates how they should develop and flourish. Our environment comprises the five elements of air, water, land, fire, and sky. We have harmed the ecosystem by cutting down the massive number of trees essential to maintaining the environmental cycle, putting up huge polluting industries, hunting and poaching animals that put them in danger, and other things.

Environmental Issues

These include rapid population expansion, decreasing natural resources, disappearing species, salinization in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, shrinking wetlands and forests, soil erosion, and coral reef destruction. Other problems include a decline in biodiversity, the quick extinction of some significant animal species, the collapse of fisheries, an increase in air and water pollution, an increase in global temperature, a thinning of the ozone layer, and the degradation of rivers, seas, and underground resources.

The dangerous chemical emissions and hazardous waste discharge into primary water resources like the Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers are two of the many adverse effects that increasing industry has on the environment. The issue of an environment that is constantly changing (in a negative way) affects all nations and all levels of government because we are all to blame for this environment's negative decline. Moreover, we are all responsible for preserving our natural environment to ensure life's continued health. Protecting the environment is of utmost importance for today's and tomorrow's generations of humans.

We still need to adapt to our surroundings, despite the profound changes brought about by science and technology regarding how we interact with the natural world. Environment is a part of human society. In an ecosystem where they are interdependent, it is essential to remember that humans are, first and foremost, animals who share a habitat with other animal species. It is up to us to protect the planet and our ecosystem so that people can live here in peace and health.

Our Contribution

The best way to preserve the environment is to educate people about the benefits of the ecosystem and the effects that environmental deterioration will have on us. A significant cause for concern is the earth's warming due to human activity. As the world grows hotter, ice melts, and water levels rise, diseases, famine, and flooding will become serious issues this century if nothing is done. Significant portions of agricultural land will be flooded.

On an individual level, we can stop using plastic straws and bags. We can carry fabric bags and other reusable bags with us while we go shopping. Using palm oil, we can use less merchandise that contributes to extensive deforestation. As large-scale farming produces massive CO2 from livestock emissions and maintenance, consuming less meat will help us leave a smaller carbon footprint. If we all decide to protect the environment, we can leave behind a healthy environment for the next generation.

“Why should I be studying for a future that soon may be no more, when no one is doing anything to save that future?”, asked Greta Thunberg, and I’m sure we all are in search of an answer to this question, more so in these unprecedented times when the entire world is at a standstill. Environmental depletion, a term we take so lightly, has been increasing with each year passing by. This year (2020 as of writing), Earth Overshoot Day was observed on August 22, exhausting nature’s budget for the year in just seven months. Even as I speak and you listen to this speech, The residents of Goa are raising their voices against an infrastructure plan which is all set to cut through Mollem National Park and destroy the habitat of thousands of animals. Even as I speak, 10,000 clothing items are being sent to landfills every 5 minutes. All because of Fast Fashion! Even as I speak, more than 80 percent of the world population is living under light-polluted skies. All because of light pollution!  And, when we actually reflect upon all of these things, there’s no one to blame but us.  Yet, we choose to remain silent.  So, I ask you today,   Why are we silent? Why don’t we care about the planet we live on?  I believe that by choosing to remain silent over the environmental issues, we are doing a disgrace to the very act of humanity.  Ain’t we ought to save this environment while we still can?  I know that since time immemorial, we have grown up learning about sustainability. In the most literal sense, we PREACH sustainability. But when it comes to bringing that into practice, our values shy away.  All of a sudden, we start to run short of time. You know why? The reason is we don’t appreciate our environment, anymore. And, that’s the root cause that is holding us back in the pathway towards sustainability.  I still remember when I was 10 years old, my father and I had this really nice ritual of going to the park for evening walks. Back then, it just didn’t matter what headspace we’re in, the air of calmness that surrounded the park would just put us at ease. It was THAT therapeutic!   But, coming back to this so-called modern mechanized era, we’ve parted our ways with this ritual. Now, in these times, even the thought of going to a park sounds cliché to all of us!   We need to learn to appreciate, nurture, and love our environment in order to save it. Because it all begins at home! You and I CAN make the difference and now is the time to inculcate sustainable lifestyle habits. The first step here can be as simple as cutting down the waste we produce in the environment. Be it in terms of buying packaged fruits and vegetables from a farmers’ market or making the area you live in litter-free. Moving ahead, the next step might sound a bit difficult because let’s face it- We ALL love shopping! But, when it comes to leading a sustainable lifestyle, minimalism is the key. Start prioritizing every single time you shop for something. When you do this, you value things you own and don’t end up wasting so much.  Gladly, to our relief, the world isn’t that pessimistic. In this age of globalization, we now have people as ‘environmental influencers’ initiating a call for action. Let’s shower our love and support towards them by drawing inspiration from them.  Therefore, I now say,  Let’s pledge to align our values and actions.  Let’s pledge to spend more time in nature.  And most important of all, let’s pledge to save this planet while we are on this planet.

Maintain cleanliness of the environment can be started from cleaning our beloved school. If our school is clean then other people will not hesitate to imitate our good habits in cleaning our school. Moreover, we, as residents or parts of this school, are also got the positive impact in teaching and learning activities that we feel comfortable because our school environment is clean. Maintain the cleanliness of school environment can be done by throwing waste in the school environment into the trash, carrying out regular class picket activities every day and doing the program of cleaning the school environment together in 30 minutes every Thursday in order to clean the school environment from diseases, such as dengue fever caused by mosquito. My friends, In conclusion, I reemphasize that cleanliness is a part of faith so if someone does not care about cleanliness then he is not really a full believer. In the future, I also hope we, as human beings, can be even more active in maintaining the cleanliness of the environment, especially the cleanliness of our school environment. That is all from me. Due to the growing demand, the invention & usage of technology is increasing rapidly so as the manufacturing, mining etc. The modern technologies have affected the environment in a degree which cannot be imagined.

Now knowing that all of we have done the damage, it is our responsibility to take steps to protect the mother earth. I am sure each one of us wants to save the environment, but saving the environment is not only respecting the government policies. It will be visible when we start taking care of our immediate environment. Though the problem is aggravated to many folds, every problem does have a solution.

Let’s do a pledge today to restore the natural balance. Each one of us must plant a tree every year. We must ensure that we are recycling the plastic wastes instead of throwing them like a shopping bag, water bottles, etc. Coming to school by cycle & walking must be ensured whenever possible instead of using a car, bikes & buses.

Let’s pledge to protect the environment we see around us. Minimal steps like planting a tree in a year also make a tremendous difference to the environment. Using paper bags instead of plastic will be another impacting step. Let’s incorporate those practices in our lives, which will make the earth a better place to live in. Now, this is high time we need to recognize the importance of our natural environment and try every possible action towards saving it, from saving water to planting trees.

Even though science and technology have radically altered the terms of adaptation to the nature, we still need to adapt to the environment. Human society is embedded in an environment. Such a condition is a very dangerous situation and an indication of the end of life on earth, which needs to be taken very seriously by all countries worldwide. It is very true that climate change goes very slow; the however, slow continuous process is very dangerous.

Because of the regular changes in the environment physical structure of human beings and other living species has been changed from generation to generation. Increasing human population needs more land for agricultural cultivation and living purpose, which force them to cut more trees and forests, so deforestation has its dangerous side effects.

The increasing the level of industrialization has countless harmful effects on the atmosphere because of the poisonous chemical emissions and dangerous waste drainage in the big water resources such as the Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers. The ever-changing (negatively) environment is not the issue of only some countries or government; it is the issue of whole human fraternity because we all are the reason of this negatively declining environment, so we all are responsible to save our natural environment for the healthy survival of life on the earth.

Protecting the atmosphere is a matter of high importance for all the present and future generations of mankind. Because of this torture and negligence towards the environment that has resulted in our destruction. Without her air, sunlight, water, flora, and fauna it would have been impossible for us to thrive. Today’s celebration of this blessing of nature which we can never completely pay our debts. 

So let’s begin with our journey today. At first, we would begin with an inaugural song by the students of class (standard of the choir), who will dedicate this song to the essential duties of nature and how she is constantly fulfilling it. I would like to call them on the stage.

Today is 5th June, World Environment Day, which we specifically celebrate to honour the beauty that nature is. Every day when we wake up we see how nature plays a vital role in our life. From the wood that we use to make our bed to the water that we drink at the end of our night all belong to nature.

All are gifts of nature including human beings. The plants, animals, insects, and our neighbours, the climate, weather, and the landmass all are natural resources. The coal and petroleum beneath the soil, the strong water current that runs the turbine for electricity, and the pure air that we breathe in our parts of nature. So to celebrate nature we have gathered here today. We will begin our journey today with an inaugural song by (his/her name).

Thank you so much for this wonderful song. It describes so beautifully the essence of nature and how constantly she is at our help. We can never forget how nature is constantly serving us the purpose of our lives. I will thank the choir for this wonderful composition.

And now I will request our respected principal sir/ma’am ( his/ her name) share with us the importance of 5th June and how she feels to share her birthday on such a wonderful occasion. Sir/ ma’am, the stage is all yours.

Before he/she comes upon the stage I would like to make a small introduction. ( His/her name) has been long associated with UNO organizations regarding natural care and ecosystem maintenance. He/she has done several campaigns and seminars regarding the preservation and conservation of natural wealth. He/she has even worked in the Sundarbans tiger conservation areas for the protection and preservation of wildlife. It is an honor to have him/ her between us today. I will request him/ her to come on the stage.

Thank you so much sir/ma’am for this energetic speech. You can have your seat and enjoy the rest of the program with us. What sir/ ma’am said is so perfectly true. We always say that we need to respect nature. Yet in our practical life we hardly ever do so. How often do we plant a tree or protect one from being cut down? If we think deeply then we never actually do so and end up complaining that nature is getting polluted. It is our duty like all other national duties to look after our environment. 

And now we will proceed with our next performance. A semi-classical dance stage by (his/her name). A big round of applause for him/her.

Thank you so much, (his/her name) for such a lovely performance. It’s truly magnificent to have you on different occasions. Your performance is quite blissful to lift our moods. 

When I was a child I remember my school organizing a specific event on 5th June. That was planting a seed or a sapling. Throughout the year we have to practice plantations. There were several classes where we learned the preservation and cleaning of a seed, how to properly sow the seed, and how to properly displace one sapling from one pot to another.

It was a meticulous and entertaining task to learn to care for nature. One such event has been organized today as well.  All of you will be given a packet of seeds, soil, and a pot. All you will have to do is to carefully plant the seed and write your name on the paper provided and stick it on the pot. These sports will be preserved in our school gallery and will be given back to the students once they have bloomed. So let’s start. 

After the Dance Performance (For Non-educational Institutions)

The dance was beautiful and quite charming in the way it showcased the beauty of nature. Thank you so much for this performance. You can have your seat. 

Now we will give a break to the continuous row of performances and move on to some activity. We have all been aware of how several places planting saplings and seeds are considered a noble profession. In European countries, in fact, due to the lack of greenery, many people encourage young children to participate in such planting programs. It not only increases our natural wealth but also makes green preservation a good habit among children.

So today for the children of our society we have arranged something similar. All of you will receive a pot filled with soil, a seed, water, and a piece of paper. All you will do is plant the seed into the soil and water it adequately and then write your name on the paper and stick it on your pot. Once the sapling grows it will be returned to you for its care. So come on everyone, let’s do some quick planting.

Now tell me everyone did you not enjoy this entire procedure? This has been the happiest experience of my life. Planting a small seed with the wish that it will one day grow into a plant is the biggest satisfaction of life. I hope all of you will enjoy this more once the plants start growing. 

For 5th June we organized a drawing competition a month ago with the theme “environment- our protector”. Many children have participated in it and all of them have drawn wonderfully. It was difficult to choose only some of them as winners. But it has to be done. Yet I will say do not be sad because your pictures will be on full display in our gallery for the next week. After that, it will be preserved with us or returned to you if you wish. So now I will declare the winners. The second runner-up is (his/her name), the first runner-up is (his/ her name), and the winner is (his/ her name). Congratulations to all of you.

Finally, we have arrived at the end of today’s program. It was wonderful to see so many of you participate and gather in the planting session and live by the idea that nature is our life. I wish that those who are here today will definitely take with themselves this moral of taking care of the green. With this note, I wish you all a good day.

Importance of World Environment Day

World Environment Day reminds us to strengthen the world and ensure that nature is preserved at all costs. It throws light on the causes which are causing serious harm to our environment. Every Little Deed Matters

On the occasion of World Environment Day, it is essential for all to realize that every little deed matters when it comes to saving the environment. No matter how small a step you are taking to lead a greener lifestyle, it does make a difference. Because, if everyone starts doing little deeds one by one, it will turn into something big. As the saying goes every drop makes an ocean, it is true in this case as well.

As there are a lot of diseases that originate due to unhygienic living conditions and dirty water, we must begin there. For instance, when water remains stagnant or unclean for long, various insects and bacteria start growing there. This results in deadly diseases like Malaria, Dengue and more. So, we must make sure to cover the tanks, pots, coolers and more which may become a breeding ground for such insects and diseases.

Similarly, we have to talk about the issues of garbage disposal. Especially in our country, people litter around everywhere. It is essential to firstly dispose of waste properly and also segregate the wet and dry waste accordingly.

These little deeds will make you realize how wholesome your life will become. It is not always about the money and luxury, the little fulfilling things and change in habits can also prove to be very effective.

Thus, we have the World Environment Day which serves as a reminder to protect the environment at all costs. All the resources of nature from forests to oceans and soil to air, we must conserve.

To sum it up, always remember that the gifts and blessings which nature endows on us are priceless. It is rather essential to conserve them all for a better future and life for all. Always remember that small steps will help you reach your goal.

Our environment is like our home. You wouldn’t want your home to be dirty, would you? The same goes for our environment. We need to keep it clean, just like we keep our homes clean. This means picking up litter and not throwing trash anywhere we like.

Trees are like our environment’s lungs. They help us breathe by giving us clean air. But many trees are being cut down for things like paper and furniture. We need to stop cutting down so many trees and start planting more.

Water is life. Without water, we cannot survive. But our rivers and oceans are getting dirty because of waste. We need to stop this. We should not throw waste into water bodies and we should clean up any waste that we see.

Animals are our friends. They also need a clean environment to live in. But many animals are losing their homes because of pollution and deforestation. We need to protect their homes by keeping our environment clean and green.

Our actions have a big impact on our environment. If we do good things for our environment, it will also do good things for us. But if we do bad things, it will affect us in bad ways too.

Let’s all promise today to do our part in protecting our environment. Remember, it’s not just for us, but also for our future generations. They deserve to live in a clean and healthy environment, just like we do.

Today, I want to talk to you about something very important. Something that touches all of us, no matter who we are or where we live. That is protecting our environment.

The environment is like our home. Just like we keep our homes clean and safe, we need to do the same for our environment. It gives us air, water, food and many other things. We need to take care of it, just like it takes care of us.

Air, water and soil are the three main parts of our environment. When these parts are clean and healthy, we are also healthy. But when they are dirty or sick, we can get sick too. This is why we need to keep our air, water and soil clean.

We can do this in many ways. One way is by not throwing trash everywhere. When we throw trash on the ground, it can make the soil sick. When it rains, this trash can go into the water and make it dirty. This is why we need to throw our trash in the right place.

Another way is by not cutting down too many trees. Trees help clean our air. They take in the bad air and give out good air. When we cut down too many trees, our air can get dirty. This is why we need to plant more trees and not cut them down.

The third way is by not using too many things that can hurt our environment. Some things like cars and factories can make our air dirty. They give out smoke that is not good for us or the environment. This is why we need to use less of these things and find other ways that are better for our environment.

We also need to teach others about this. We need to tell our friends, our families, and everyone we know. The more people know, the more they can help. And the more we all help, the better our environment will be.

In conclusion, protecting our environment is very important. It’s not just for us, but for everyone who comes after us. Just like we got a clean and healthy environment from those before us, we need to give the same to those who come after us. It’s our duty and our responsibility. And I believe that together, we can do it.

Environmental justice and education: How schools can help foster a sustainable future

Climate change conference brought together artists, activists, public officials, school board members, higher education leadership, district administrators and teachers to share their commitment to sustaining the environment.

On April 4, USC Rossier and Bio Equity Ed , a community-based non-profit in Los Angeles, hosted a conference on “Climate Change and Environmental Justice: The Role of Schools in Planning for a Sustainable Future.” Artists, activists, public officials, school board members, higher education leadership, district administrators and teachers convened by the dozens in the LEED-certified building of the California Endowment. Panelists and conferencegoers alike shared their commitments to transforming communities and building alliances, to sustain just and meaningful change in the face of our changing climate.

In her opening remarks, Veda Ramsay-Stamps EdD ’23 , USC Rossier alumna and founder of Bio Equity Ed, described how disconnected communities of color in most urban areas feel from nature, owing to historic injustices. She recounted the stories of Black and Brown students in Los Angeles, those who grow up miles from idyllic beaches and mountains but who know only the concrete beneath the nearest river and their feet. Artist Lauren Bon then described her work to bend and regenerate the L.A. River, providing water to the Los Angeles State Historic Park, which had once been a trainyard.

As Dean Pedro Noguera told the audience in his introduction: “Every problem facing the world today is an educational challenge. We have to learn what we need to do. And if we think of the climate crisis this way, as an educational challenge, the problem itself becomes less despairing.” Dean Noguera urged those in attendance not only to meet but to act, not merely to educate others to be resilient in the face of climate change but to inspire its solutions.

In breakout sessions, Distinguished Professor Gale Sinatra moderated a discussion with Imogen Herrick  PhD ’23, a USC Rossier alumna now at the University of Kansas, and Paula Carbone , USC Rossier professor of clinical education. They described successful pedagogical approaches to inspiring students into climate action, integrating students’ own identities and experiences. USC Rossier Professor Tracy Poon Tambascia spoke with researchers and architects about how to transform schools and schoolyards into biophilic environments. Community organizers and non-profit leaders shared their experiences greening urban environments with trees and micro-farms, especially in convincing schools to plant more gardens. Teachers and administrators from California’s climate-sensitive Central Valley described their fleets of electric school buses and innovative sustainability programs and curriculum to move students of color.

The conference’s keynote speaker, University of California, Merced Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz  outlined his university’s foundational commitment to sustainability in the Central Valley. At UC Merced, which was already the first research university in the United States to be carbon-neutral, Chancellor Muñoz is helping construct a center for sustainable agriculture, a model for what higher education can contribute to environmental sustainability and surrounding communities.

In an especially rousing plenary session, Stephen Ritz , a high school teacher from the South Bronx, described how he had turned his classroom and his school, in one of the most economically and environmentally deprived communities in the United States, into a vegetable garden. Ritz the subject of an upcoming documentary called Generation Growth , has not only shared his plant-based curriculum with governments and classrooms around the world, through his Green Bronx Machine non-profit, he turned the very conference room in which he spoke into an organic, immersive experience with greenery.

Naomi Riley, representing Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California’s 37th District, who had directed millions of dollars to sustainability projects, told those in attendance early in the day, “the folks closest to the problem are usually closest to the solution.” Most often, no one is closer to the problems in our communities than the teachers and administrators of local schools. It is they, as Noguera said, who “must begin to think creatively and critically to address climate change and give hope to kids who believe there is no future.”

First Amendment :

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Although the Supreme Court had previously held that students in public schools are entitled to some constitutional protection, 1 Footnote See, e.g. , W. Va. State Bd. of Educ. v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) ; Meyer v. Nebraska, 262 U.S. 390 (1923) ; Pierce v. Soc’y of Sisters, 268 U.S. 510 (1925) . as are minors generally, 2 Footnote In re Gault, 387 U.S. 1 (1967) . Children are subject to some restrictions that could not constitutionally be applied to adults. E.g. , Ginsberg v. New York, 390 U.S. 629 (1968) (upholding state law restricting access to certain material deemed “harmful to minors,” although not obscene as to adults). it established the controlling standard for assessing First Amendment rights in the school environment in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District . 3 Footnote 393 U.S. 503 (1969) . In that case, the Court articulated a need to balance students’ First Amendment protections with the goals and needs of educators and the community.

In Tinker , high school principals had banned students from wearing black armbands as a symbol of protest against the United States’ actions in Vietnam. 4 Footnote Id. at 504 Reversing the lower courts’ refusal to reinstate students who had been suspended for violating the ban, the Court set out a balancing test for applying the First Amendment in schools. 5 Footnote Id. at 514 . According to the Court, “ First Amendment rights, applied in light of the special characteristics of the school environment, are available to teachers and students,” and neither students nor teachers “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” 6 Footnote Id. at 506 . Notwithstanding these protections, the Court affirmed the comprehensive authority of the states and of school officials, consistent with fundamental constitutional safeguards, “to prescribe and control conduct in the schools.” 7 Footnote Id. at 507 . On balance, therefore, school authorities may restrict expression to prevent disruption of school activities or discipline, 8 Footnote Id. but such restrictions must be justified by “something more than a mere desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint.” 9 Footnote Id. at 509 (citing Burnside v. Byars, 363 F.2d 744, 749 (5th Cir. 1966) ). See also Papish v. Bd. of Curators, 410 U.S. 667 (1973) (state university could not expel a student for using “indecent speech” in campus newspaper); but cf. Bethel Sch. Dist. No. 403 v. Fraser, 478 U.S. 675 (1986) (upholding two-day suspension, and withdrawal of privilege of speaking at graduation, for student who used sexual metaphor in speech given to high school assembly).

The Court reaffirmed Tinker in Healy v. James , finding no basis to believe that, “ First Amendment protections should apply with less force on college campuses than in the community at large.” 10 Footnote 408 U.S. 169 (1972) . In Healy , the Court held that students’ rights of association, implicit in the First Amendment , were violated when a public college denied a student group official recognition as a campus organization. 11 Footnote Id. at 180 . Denying recognition, the Court held, was impermissible if it was based on factors such as the student organization’s affiliation with the national Students for a Democratic Society, on disagreement with the organization’s philosophy, or on an unfounded fear of disruption. 12 Footnote Id. at 187–90 . The Court suggested that how courts strike the balance under the Tinker inquiry may differ depending on the students’ ages. The Court emphasized that “[t]he college classroom with its surrounding environs is peculiarly the ‘marketplace of ideas,’” but also concluded that a college administration may require “that a group seeking official recognition affirm in advance its willingness to adhere to reasonable campus law.” 13 Footnote Id. at 193 . Because a First Amendment right was in issue, the college had the burden to justify rejecting a request for recognition rather than the requesters to justify affirmatively their right to be recognized. Id. at 184 . See also Grayned v. City of Rockford, 408 U.S. 104 (1972) (upholding an anti-noise ordinance that forbade persons on grounds adjacent to a school to willfully make noise or to create any other diversion during school hours that “disturbs or tends to disturb” normal school activities).

In 1982, the Court faced a conflict between a school system’s obligation to inculcate community values in students and the free-speech rights of those students. In Board of Education v. Pico , the Court considered a case challenging a school board’s authority to remove certain books from high school and junior high school libraries. 14 Footnote Bd. of Educ. v. Pico, 457 U.S. 853 (1982) . The procedural posture of the case required the Court to assume that the books were removed because the school board disagreed with the books’ content for political reasons. 15 Footnote Id. at 872 . A plurality of the Court thought that students retained substantial free-speech protections and that among these was the right to receive information and ideas. 16 Footnote Id. at 866–67 . Although the plurality conceded that school boards must be permitted “to establish and apply their curriculum in such a way as to transmit community values,” and that “there is a legitimate and substantial community interest in promoting respect for authority and traditional values be they social, moral, or political,” it reasoned that a school board was constitutionally prohibited from removing library books in order to deny access to political ideas with which the board disagreed. 17 Footnote Id. at 862, 864–69, 870–72 . Justices Thurgood Marshall and John Paul Stevens joined Justice William Brennan’s opinion fully. Justice Harry Blackmun believed “that certain forms of state discrimination between ideas are improper” and agreed that the government “may not act to deny access to an idea simply because state officials disapprove of that idea for partisan or political reasons.” Id. at 878–79 (Blackmun, J., concurring in part and concurring in the judgment). Justice Byron White provided the fifth vote for reversal, and he would have avoided “a dissertation” on the First Amendment issue. Id. at 883 (White, J., concurring in the judgment). Instead, he voted to reverse the trial court’s grant of summary judgment based on an unresolved factual issue going to the reasons for the school board’s removal. Id. The four dissenters argued that the Constitution did not prevent the school board from expressing community values in this way regardless of its motivation. 18 Footnote Justice William Rehnquist wrote the principal dissent. Id. at 904 (Rehnquist, J., dissenting). See also id. at 885 (Burger, C.J., dissenting), 893 (Powell, J., dissenting), 921 (O’Connor, J., dissenting).

The Court struck a different balance between student freedom and educator authority in Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier , 19 Footnote 484 U.S. 260 (1988) . in which it relied on public forum analysis to hold that editorial control and censorship of a student newspaper sponsored by a public high school need be only “reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns.” 20 Footnote Id. at 273 . The Court distinguished the facts of Kuhlmeier from Tinker , explaining that “[t]he question whether the First Amendment requires a school to tolerate particular student speech—the question that we addressed in Tinker —-is different from the question whether the First Amendment requires a school affirmatively to promote particular student speech.” 21 Footnote Id. at 270–71 . The student newspaper at issue had been created by school officials as a part of the school curriculum, and served “as a supervised learning experience for journalism students.” 22 Footnote Id. at 270 . Because the newspaper was not a public forum, school officials could maintain editorial control so long as their actions were “reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns.” 23 Footnote Id. at 273 . Thus, a principal’s decision to remove an article describing student pregnancy in a manner believed inappropriate for younger students, and another article on divorce critical of a named parent, were upheld. 24 Footnote Id. at 276 .

In Morse v. Frederick , 25 Footnote 551 U.S. 393 (2007) . the Court held that a school could punish a pupil for displaying a banner that said, “BONG HiTS 4 JESUS” at a school-sponsored event even absent evidence the banner caused substantial disruption. 26 Footnote Id. at 401 . The Court reasoned that schools “may take steps to safeguard those entrusted to their care from speech that can reasonably be regarded as encouraging illegal drug use,” 27 Footnote Id. at 397 . but indicated that it might have reached a different result if the banner had addressed the issue of “the criminalization of drug use or possession.” 28 Footnote Id. at 403 . In his concurrence, Justice Samuel Alito commented that the Court’s opinion “provides no support for any restriction on speech that can plausibly be interpreted as commenting on any political or social issue.” 29 Footnote Id. at 422 .

While the Kuhlmeier and Morse cases focused on applying Tinker to on-campus speech, the Court addressed Tinker 's application to off-campus speech in its 2021 Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L. decision. 30 Footnote No. 20-255 (U.S. June 23, 2021) . In Mahanoy , the Court held that while public schools may have a special interest in some off-campus student speech, there are several features of off-campus speech that diminish “the unique educational characteristics that might call for the special First Amendment leeway” to regulate speech that Tinker provided. 31 Footnote Id. at 5–7 . The Court identified three distinguishing characteristics of off-campus speech that the Court reasoned made the Tinker standards less applicable. 32 Footnote Id. at 7 . First, off-campus speech, in some circumstances, should fall within the zone of parental, rather than school officials', responsibility. 33 Footnote Id. Second, the Court reasoned that allowing schools to regulate off-campus speech would provide an opportunity to regulate student speech 24 hours a day, which may, in effect, chill students’ protected speech. 34 Footnote Id. Third, the Court emphasized that while a school does have authority to regulate speech that interrupts the school’s work, 35 Footnote The Court also reiterated that, pursuant to Tinker , schools have a “special interest in regulating speech that ‘materially disrupts classwork or involves substantial disorder or invasion of the rights of others.’” Id. schools also have an interest in protecting students’ unpopular expressions, as America’s public schools are “the nurseries of democracy.” 36 Footnote Id. Although the Court recognized that some off-campus speech—-such as severe bullying, threats, or participation in online school activities—may require school regulation, it was hesitant to establish any clear general rules about what constitutes off-campus speech. 37 Footnote Id. at 5–6 . In light of these considerations, the Court held that a school could not regulate a student’s social media posts that criticized the school because the circumstances of the speech—the fact that the posts were made at an off-campus convenience store on a personal cellphone to a limited group of people and did not name the specific school or school authorities—diminished the school’s interest in regulation. 38 Footnote Id. at 7–8 .

The line of cases from Tinker to Mahanoy address the First Amendment rights of school and university students. Schools weigh freedom of speech and safety risks as nationwide protests pop up on college campuses over the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The turmoil on college campuses over the Israel-Hamas War continues to spread. Protests and arrests at Columbia University have been followed by demonstrations and arrests at NYU and Yale as well as rallies in sit-ins at Michigan, Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley. While many campuses remain calm, administrators are working to ensure the safety of all their students. NPR's Sequoia Carrillo reports.

SEQUOIA CARRILLO, BYLINE: Colleges are walking a fine line this week as students on both sides of a deeply emotional conflict take to their campuses to protest. The demonstration, says Ted Mitchell...

TED MITCHELL: They raise this really complicated tension between freedom of speech and protecting student safety.

CARRILLO: Mitchell is the president of the American Council on Education, an umbrella organization for higher-ed institutions. He's been following closely as more than a hundred students were arrested during a peaceful protest at Columbia this weekend, dozens more at Yale and then last night at NYU. Mitchell says two things are critical right now for campus leaders.

MITCHELL: First of all, to be clear about what campus policies are and what they're not, and then, second, to be consistent - and this is where I think there's been a lot of struggle, where one group feels that they are being treated differently than another group. That's a very dangerous spot for higher-ed administrators to be.

CARRILLO: At Ohio State University last week, a protest march on campus featured students chanting and calling for the university to divest from Israeli companies. Administrators are calling for students to treat each other with respect and dignity. In a statement, spokesman Ben Johnson noted that, so far, no students have been removed, but police and trained staff are on-site for demonstrations.

BEN JOHNSON: And we remind students, faculty and staff frequently that when protected speech becomes incitement or becomes a threat of violence, the university has and will always move quickly to enforce the law and enforce university policy.

CARRILLO: Harvard's president Alan Garber told the student newspaper that he could not rule out the use of police, but added that the school has a very high bar before doing so. At the University of Michigan, students have also set up an encampment on the main quad. Officials at the university provided a statement to NPR. It reads, students are able to engage in peaceful protests in many places on campus. And at the same time, the university has a responsibility to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning and academic success. No one has the right to substantially disrupt university activities or to violate laws or university policies.

Mitchell from the American Council on Education says colleges can and will move past this turmoil, but it will take time.

MITCHELL: Let's be clear. Universities are not crumbling. The actions taking place on universities are setting the table for long, deep debates - whether it's debates about investment in Israel or about two-state solutions to the Middle East politics or about the history of the region. And so this is a loud way of setting that table for the future.

CARRILLO: With graduation mere weeks away, it may be some time before students and faculty get to sit down at that table and work things through. Sequoia Carrillo, NPR News.

Disrupting marine life affects our food cycle and damages our ecosystem.

The contamination of soil due to the presence of chemicals or other harmful particles is called soil pollution. It, directly and indirectly, affects our lives. Excessive use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers for agricultural production, mining, improper waste disposal, and acid rain are some of the major causes of soil pollution. As a result of soil pollution, the soil loses its fertility and deteriorates natural vegetation. It adversely affects the organisms residing in the soil, degrades agricultural productivity, and even results in famine.

Noise pollution is caused by the excessive amounts of noise in our environment. Noise pollution is generally man-made, and it badly affects the natural balance of our ecosystem. Any sound which is over 85 decibels is harmful to human health. Due to globalisation and industrialisation, the level of noise pollution in our environment has increased drastically. Some of the main contributors to noise pollution are machinery used in industries, noise emitted by vehicles, sounds produced during construction work, noise during public festivals and social events, etc. Noise pollution has become a major issue for many developed and developing nations. As a consequence, people are facing sleeping disorders, hearing loss, hypertension, stress-related illnesses, etc.

Thermal pollution is caused by the sudden increase or decrease of the temperature of a natural body of water. Industrial machinery and power plants are the major contributors to thermal pollution. For the process of cooling machinery, water from nature is collected and used. But after this mechanism, the temperature of the water gets altered. By pumping back the water, the thermal balance of the natural source of water becomes affected and results in thermal pollution. It changes the oxygen level and destroys ecosystems.

The pollution caused by the release of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions, nuclear weapon production and decommissioning, mining of radioactive ores, and disposal of radioactive wastes are called radioactive pollution.

All this pollution has had a great impact on our lives. Many environmental catastrophes like global warming, acid rain, famine, drought, earthquakes, etc., are the returns given to us by earth for our greed. If we continue to pollute, then be ready to face the end.

It is caused by the harmful effect of pollutants that are discharged into the environment by the irrational actions of human beings. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Community , in partnership with the Stanton Foundation First Amendment Clinic , hosted the last Dean’s Lecture Series on Race and Discrimination for the year in mid-April. The Lecture, “Free Speech and Equality: Friends or Foes?”, was delivered by Jacob Mchangama, research professor of political science in the College of Arts and Science, CEO of Justitia , and the Founder and Executive Director of The Future of Free Speech.

Intersection of Free Speech and Equality

Mchangama delved into what can be deemed permissible under the guise of freedom of expression.

Democracies are increasingly struggling with a tension between the principles of free speech and equality, particularly in the digital age where offensive material is normalized online. Traditional arguments, such as the notion that “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” no longer hold sway in a world where words have demonstrably led to violence.

The experiences of historically marginalized groups illuminate this trend. Certain words carry profound weight, perpetuating cycles of discrimination and serving as potent tools of oppression. While free speech remains a cornerstone of democratic ideals, its compatibility with principles of equality is increasingly questioned. Some argue that censorship aimed at protecting minorities may inadvertently exacerbate harm. Instead, proponents advocate for an approach that upholds both free speech and the pursuit of equality.

As Mchangama stated, “free speech is the dread of tyrannies but has it been hijacked to go against minorities.”

History of Free Speech

Mchangama offered insight into the historical trajectory of free speech, highlighting its evolution within the context of British rule in early America. The Virginia Declaration, the First Amendment, and Jefferson’s inaugural address are noted as pivotal moments, yet their significance is juxtaposed with the stark reality faced by enslaved individuals on Jefferson’s own plantation. As the 19th century progressed, the contradiction between slavery and the ideals of free speech became increasingly evident to many Americans. In response, legislative efforts aimed at stifling dissent emerged, exemplified by Andrew Jackson and John C. Calhoun’s attempts to pass laws restricting speech to shield White slave owners from criticism. The fear underlying such measures speaks volumes about the power of speech as a weapon against oppression.

Frederick Douglass’s Words as a Weapon

Frederick Douglass emerged as a central figure in combating the oppression of African Americans, wielding the power of words as his only weapon in the fight against slavery. His belief in free speech being “A universal human right and potent weapon” transcended barriers of birthplace and skin color, showcasing it as a fundamental human right and tool for social change. Despite the abolition of slavery, White supremacy persisted, as evidenced by Ida B. Wells’s journalism exposing the horrors of lynching in Memphis. Her work highlighted the enduring importance of free speech in challenging systemic injustice and upholding the principles of equality and justice for all.

Colonialism

Colonialism brought with it some of the greatest instances of repression of free speech. For example, the British suppressing Indian protests through oppressive seditious laws. Prominent figures like Mahatma Gandhi faced prosecution under these restrictions on free speech, which were described as stifling the “lungs of liberty.” The suppression of free speech was a blatant violation of fundamental rights. In a similar vein, the Paris Massacre of 1961 stands as a stark example of state repression. Algerian Muslims in France were subjected to a curfew, prompting defiance and protests. Tragically, those who took to the streets were met with deadly force, resulting in a massacre that the French authorities sought to conceal from public scrutiny. This episode stands as one of the darkest moments in French history, revealing the lengths to which colonial powers would go to silence dissent.

Free Speech and Civil Rights

Mchangama noted that following World War II, a fascist Catholic priest incited violence through his rhetoric, prompting United States Attorney General Robert Jackson’s concern over the limits of free speech. This worry was echoed in the case of Edwards v. South Carolina, where expanded First Amendment protections were established. African Americans protesting against White supremacy faced opposition from law enforcement, who feared potential harm to White individuals. However, the Supreme Court sided with the Black protesters, providing a shield for persecuted minorities. As civil rights leader John Lewis stated, “Without freedom of speech and the right to dissent, the civil rights movement would have been a bird without wings,” highlighting the crucial role of free speech in advancing the rights of African Americans.

Free Speech Today

Today, racism and social justice remain pervasive issues, prompting some to question whether the robust protection of free speech, perhaps deemed necessary in the past, is still warranted. However, Mchangama argues against this notion. While it may be tempting to believe that such protections are no longer necessary, recent developments suggest otherwise. In some states, there is a push to ban the teaching of “divisive concepts,” a move that could have detrimental effects on social justice efforts. Additionally, there is a risk that hate speech laws could be expanded to suppress discussions that are highly relevant to addressing contemporary conflicts. For Mchangama, it would be misguided to silence conversations and critiques surrounding ongoing social issues under the guise of maintaining civility.

Q&A with the 2024 Colorado School of Public Health Convocation Student Speaker, Miranda Dally

Miranda Dally, MS, research instructor and DrPH candidate at the Colorado School of Public Health’s Center for Health, Work and Environment and Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, was chosen to be the 2024 graduation student speaker. We sat down with Miranda to learn more about why she was selected, her future plans, and what her convocation speech might include.

Can you tell us about your background and how you’ve gotten to the point where you are now?

It's kind of a long story. I came out to Colorado in 2013 to do my Master's in Biostatistics at the Colorado School of Public Health and through a series of serendipitous events, I ended up working for the Center for Health, Work and Environment, which does a lot of occupational health research. So, I was their primary statistician and they kept me on after I graduated in 2015. Through my work supporting the biostatistics and analysis side of things, I became really interested in occupational health itself and decided that I was really passionate about that kind of research. So, I wanted to go back to school to basically expand the options in what I can do. I decided to do the DrPH in Environmental and Occupational Health and that's how I ended up there.

How has your experience with the Colorado School of Public Health been?

I think that what I really found at the school was that it was just a very nurturing environment. I've had really great mentorship both through the Biostatistics department as well as the Environmental Occupational Health (EOH) department, and I think that for me, what was why I chose to continue to stay at the university. I felt like faculty really invested their time in me and in students and it wasn't just teaching. Because if you're a professor, you have to teach. But it was really that they felt passionate, not just about teaching, but mentoring, both within school professionally and within life. Any time I talk to prospective students, the point I always focus on is that I just don't think that you get this level of mentorship at other institutions.

You’ve mentioned that you worked with the Center of Health, Work and Environment. Were you involved in other extracurriculars through the Colorado School of Public Health?

I‘ve always had kind of an interesting situation because of working full-time and being a student, but I was elected President of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, which is Colorado School of Public Health’s chapter of the national honor society. It's a nice way to help make sure that we acknowledge the efforts of all students who have really dedicated themselves to public health.

How did you feel about being selected as the top choice for the student speaker honor within the Department of EOH?

I felt really overwhelmed but I think that's because it's a lot to try to think about the messaging that I want to convey to students. I think that it's easy in public health to focus on the negatives and the issues and everything can feel kind of dire… At the same time, this is a graduating class of students who came in during or right after the pandemic—after what I consider as public health being attacked—and they decided, no, this is important. And so, how do I really emphasize the aspect that now we have all of these professionals who are so passionate about the work that they do, with the fact that we need these professionals because we have all of these horrible issues going on around us?

Why did you accept the Student Speaker honor?

I didn't accept it right away, but I sat on [it] and I thought about it, and I accepted it because I do feel like while it's a lot of pressure to convey that message, I know that that's the message that needs to be conveyed… Having that opportunity and having a broad picture of the issues and things like that, I felt like by accepting then at least I get to have the message that I want said.

Could you give us a little bit of a teaser of what you’re going to talk about throughout your speech?

It’s going to really focus on the fact that public health is facing a lot of crises from a bunch of different fronts, but at the same time, we, as a student body, have really been positioned to address those issues. When things can feel really heavy and it can feel like it's out of our control, there's always people working. And just the fact that, again, this is a group of students who decided to come to the Colorado School of Public Health in 2021/2022 in the middle of it all and they said, “No, you know what…We want to make a difference.” So, I think just going out with that message we've empowered ourselves now. So, let's go do that.

Past graduation, what do your next steps look like?

Broadly, I really want to continue my research in making an impact on workers and ensuring that they're safe and healthy, and they come home from work just as safe and healthy as they went to work. I'm hoping to stay in the occupational health realm and work with both employers and employees to make sure that we're doing everything that we can to ensure safety at work.

Colorado School of Public Health's Spring 2024 Convocation will be held on May 20, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus Parade Grounds. Dr. Patricia Gabow will be this year's keynote speaker.

DC School Violating Arab Club’s Free Speech Rights, ACLU Says

Students in the Arab Student Union at Washington D.C.'s largest high school filed a lawsuit against the school principal Wednesday, saying he infringed their First Amendment rights by barring them from holding pro-Palestine events and distributing related materials.

“Their speech has been suppressed because the school does not want their viewpoint—which concerns the ongoing war in Gaza and its effects on the Palestinian people—to be heard,” the students say in a complaint brought on their behalf by the ACLU of the District of Columbia.

The lawsuit shows how the tensions between administrators and protesting students roiling college campuses around the country are also impacting high schools.

In addition to Jackson Reed High principal Sah Brown, the students are suing the District of Columbia, which oversees D.C.'s public schools.

The 19-member Union is a recognized student club at Jackson-Reed, according to the complaint. The school also has similar groups for Asian, Black, and Jewish students, the complaint also says.

In December, the Union planned a lunch hour screening for students of a documentary called “The Occupation of the American Mind.” The complaint says “The film presents a pro-Palestinian point of view and is highly critical of the Israeli government’s actions toward Palestinians.”

The Jackson-Reed students placed flyers around the school advertising the lunch hour screening that said “Let’s get educated,” according to the complaint. But days before the planned December 14 film showing, Brown canceled the event and had the flyers taken down, according to the complaint.

“Principal Brown explained that he was concerned that the views portrayed in the documentary may be polarizing and may cause a divide among the student body,” the complaint says. “He said that the movie’s narrator (Roger Waters) was a problem, and that he would not feel comfortable associating the school with a person whose views are critical of people that are part of the school community.”

In January, the club planned a Palestinian Culture Night—but the event was subsequently removed from the school’s calendar and forced off-campus instead, the complaint says.

In March, the students were told to remove parts of a self-made magazine they planned to distribute to students, they say. For example, "[d]efendants required Plaintiff to delete an image of a popular cartoon character named Handala, who is named after the resilient handal plant, and who symbolizes Palestinian resistance,” the complaint says.

They were also prevented from distributing stickers that read “Free Palestine,” according to the complaint.

By contrast, the school’s more than sixty clubs are routinely allowed to host movie screenings and distribute materials, the complaint says. For example, “a Jackson-Reed club called The Birds & The Bees Sexual Health Club has distributed condoms on school grounds, along with a flier providing information about their use,” the complaint says. “The school has not interfered with that activity.”

Jackson Reed has some 1900 students in grades 9 through 12, according to its website. It opened in 1936. In 2022 it changed its name from Woodrow Wilson High School after months of debate. According to the D.C. Public Schools website , the school is D.C.'s largest high school.

Jackson Reed and the DC Office of the General Counsel didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The students are suing for violations of the First Amendment, the federal Equal Access Act, and the D.C. Student Bill of Rights.

They are seeking a court order allowing them to host and advertise their movie screening, hold a Palestinian Culture Night, and distribute their magazine and stickers. They are also seeking declarations that the principal and D.C. have violated the Constitution; a permanent injunction “directing Defendants to treat the Arab Student Union and its members in the same manner that they treat other student clubs with respect to meetings, events, and distribution of expressive material;" attorneys’ fees and costs.

The case is assigned to Judge Ana C. Reyes .
