Simple Recipes is a collection of seven fictional stories by Madeleine Thien about family, relationships, and finding hope in times of despair. Characters in these stories are faced with immense grief as they attempt to maneuver and survive these tragic moments. Most of them are faced with impossible odds that they must overcome to move on in life. Thien fills the stories with compassion, honesty, and vulnerability as she dissects the bonds created by these characters in the pursuit of love and companionship.

The author’s visualization through her words is impressive as she tries to connect her feelings with the feelings of the characters, making her narrative real, unique, and impactful. The stories explore the weight of expectations that come from maintaining certain relationships. The effects of unfulfilled expectations are devastating to these characters, who are deeply invested in other people’s happiness over their own. Many of these characters’s lives do not turn out as initially expected and the disappointment eats at them, forever changing their core personalities.

Thien values the small moments in life that eventually hold a lot of impact on what we think, want, and do in the future. She maps out perspectives from people of all ages which is insightful in decoding how people relate and connect based on their age and life experience. Human relationships are complex and impossible to decipher. Thien attempts to understand why humans do the things they do and what motivates and inspires them to live everyday life despite the pain and torment of it all.

Simple Recipes is an overwhelmingly emotional collection of stories that relates to all people of all ages. As humans, it’s inevitable for all of us to create, build, and maintain relationships that service the desires that we lacked most growing up. The traumas that humans bottle up as they go through life eventually reveal themselves in moments where they feel exposed and vulnerable. Thien does not dismiss any character’s opinion as she provides all her characters with great voices that speak honestly about their pain and struggles.

The Literal and Symbolic Meanings of Home

Thien situates the concept of home in every story, whether as a house from the past, another country, the arms of another person, or empty space. Home in Thien’s construction is therefore either literal or symbolic. In the story “House,” home exists in both the house the sisters once lived in and in their relationship with their mother. Both ideas of home are described as an absence. For most of the characters, home is often blurred by memory, distance, and location, as well as by abuse, trauma , and grief.

In the stories that most deal with the concept of immigration, home is often metaphorical. Family represents home in the same way that a home country, or an adopted country like Canada, represents home. The idea of home is not always tactile, but in the mind—it is not always a literal building with family members inside, but a memory, a thought, a yearning. These metaphorical images of home are the most elusive for the characters; yet, at the same time, these symbolic meanings are emotionally felt.

Finding new recipes daily with the ingredients in hand is a difficult task that leads to people looking at different recipe websites and cookbooks. But it is often not possible to find the recipe one is looking for with the constraint of ingredients. The objective of this paper is to build a web application so as to cater to this specific problem faced by people. The proposed system takes ingredients as an input and gives machine generated recipes with the help of deep learning to the user. The recipe generated model will consist of title, ingredients and instruction reflecting the dataset used to prepare the model for deep learning. The system also consists of interactive features in the user interface enabling the user to save and access the generated recipe later on.

A thesis statement is the main argument of your paper or thesis.

The thesis statement is one of the most important elements of any piece of academic writing . It is a brief statement of your paper’s main argument. Essentially, you are stating what you will be writing about.

You can see your thesis statement as an answer to a question. While it also contains the question, it should really give an answer to the question with new information and not just restate or reiterate it.

Your thesis statement is part of your introduction. Learn more about how to write a good thesis introduction in our introduction guide .

A thesis statement is not a question. A statement must be arguable and provable through evidence and analysis. While your thesis might stem from a research question, it should be in the form of a statement.

Tip: A thesis statement is typically 1-2 sentences. For a longer project like a thesis, the statement may be several sentences or a paragraph.

A good thesis statement needs to do the following:

  • Condense the main idea of your thesis into one or two sentences.
  • Answer your project’s main research question.
  • Clearly state your position in relation to the topic .
  • Make an argument that requires support or evidence.

Once you have written down a thesis statement, check if it fulfills the following criteria:

  • Your statement needs to be provable by evidence. As an argument, a thesis statement needs to be debatable.
  • Your statement needs to be precise. Do not give away too much information in the thesis statement and do not load it with unnecessary information.
  • Your statement cannot say that one solution is simply right or simply wrong as a matter of fact. You should draw upon verified facts to persuade the reader of your solution, but you cannot just declare something as right or wrong.

As previously mentioned, your thesis statement should answer a question.

If the question is:

What do you think the City of New York should do to reduce traffic congestion?

A good thesis statement restates the question and answers it:

In this paper, I will argue that the City of New York should focus on providing exclusive lanes for public transport and adaptive traffic signals to reduce traffic congestion by the year 2035.

Here is another example. If the question is:

How can we end poverty?

A good thesis statement should give more than one solution to the problem in question:

In this paper, I will argue that introducing universal basic income can help reduce poverty and positively impact the way we work.

A thesis statement is part of the introduction of your paper. It is usually found in the first or second paragraph to let the reader know your research purpose from the beginning.

After creating the files just paste the following codes into your file. Make sure to save your HTML document with a .html extension, so that it can be properly viewed in a web browser.

Let me break it down step by step:

1. <!DOCTYPE html> : This declaration defines the document type and version of HTML being used. In this case, it's HTML5.

2. <html lang="en"> : This tag indicates the beginning of the HTML document and specifies the language of the content, which is English in this case.

3. <head> : The head section of the document contains metadata about the webpage, like character encoding, title, stylesheets, and other resources. It doesn't display directly on the webpage.

  • <meta charset="UTF-8" /> : This sets the character encoding of the document to UTF-8, which supports a wide range of characters and symbols from different languages.
  • <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge" /> : This meta tag tells Internet Explorer to use the latest rendering engine available.
  • <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" /> : This meta tag ensures that the webpage is properly scaled and displayed on various devices, adapting to different screen sizes.
  • <title> Recipe Book App </title> : This sets the title of the webpage, which is typically displayed in the browser's title bar or tab.
  • <link rel="stylesheet" href="styles.css" /> : This links an external stylesheet named "styles.css" to the HTML document. Stylesheets are used to define the visual appearance of the webpage.

4. <body> : The body section contains the visible content of the webpage.

  • <header> : This defines a header section for the page.

Once the basic HTML structure of the recipe book is in place, the next step is to add styling to the recipe book using CSS.

Next, we will create our CSS file. In this file, we will use some basic CSS rules to create our recipe book.

Here's a breakdown of what each part of the code does:

1. Styling the Body:

  • The body element is targeted to set some basic styles for the entire webpage.
  • margin: 0; padding: 0; removes any default margin and padding from the body, effectively creating a clean starting point.
  • font-family: Arial, sans-serif; sets the font family for the entire page to Arial or any sans-serif font if Arial is not available.

2. Styling the Header:

  • The header element is targeted to style the webpage's header section.
  • background: #0c2461; sets the background color to a dark blue shade.
  • color: #fff; sets the text color to white.
  • padding: 20px; adds 20 pixels of padding around the header.
  • text-align: center; centers the text within the header.

3. Styling Headings (h1):

  • h1 elements are targeted to style main headings.
  • margin: 0; removes any margin around the heading.
  • font-size: 36px; sets the font size to 36 pixels.

4. Styling a Container:

  • The .container class is targeted for styling.
  • margin: 0 auto; centers the container horizontally using automatic left and right margins.
  • max-width: 1200px; sets the maximum width of the container to 1200 pixels.
  • padding: 20px; adds 20 pixels of padding around the container.

5. Styling Recipe List:

  • The .recipe-list class is targeted to style an unordered list (presumably a list of recipes).
  • list-style: none; removes the default bullet points from the list.
  • margin: 0; padding: 0; removes any margin and padding from the list.

6. Styling Recipe Items:

  • The .recipe-item class is targeted to style individual recipe items.
  • display: flex; makes the items flexible (enables flexbox layout).
  • align-items: center; justify-content: space-between; centers items vertically and distributes space evenly between them horizontally.
  • margin-bottom: 20px; adds a 20-pixel margin at the bottom.
  • box-shadow: ...; adds a subtle box shadow for a lifted appearance.
  • border-radius: 5px; rounds the corners of the recipe items.
  • overflow: hidden; hides any overflowing content.

7. Styling Recipe Item Image:

  • The .recipe-item img selector targets the images inside recipe items.
  • width: 150px; height: 150px; sets the width and height of the image.
  • object-fit: cover; scales the image while maintaining its aspect ratio, covering its container.

8. Styling Recipe Item Headings (h2) and Paragraphs (p):

  • .recipe-item h2 is styled with a font size of 20 pixels and some padding.
  • .recipe-item p has a font color of #777 (a dark gray).

9. Styling Recipe Item Links:

  • .recipe-item a styles the links within the recipe items.
  • background: #0c2461; color: #fff; sets background and text colors.
  • min-width: 150px; padding: 10px; sets minimum width and adds padding.
  • text-decoration: none; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 14px; removes underlines, transforms text to uppercase, and sets font size.
  • transition: background 0.3s ease; adds a smooth transition effect on background changes.

10. Styling Hover Effects:

  • .recipe-item a:hover changes the background color on hover to create a visual feedback effect.

11. Media Query for Responsive Design:

  • Inside the @media query, styles are adjusted for screens with a maximum width of 768 pixels.
  • .container width is reduced for smaller screens.
  • .recipe-item flex direction changes to column layout.
  • Image width adjusts to 100% with auto height to maintain aspect ratio.
  • Various font sizes and spacings are adjusted for better readability on smaller screens.
  • Links are centered with full width.

This will give our recipe book an upgraded presentation. Create a CSS file with the name of styles.css and paste the given codes into your CSS file. Remember that you must create a file with the .css extension.

Step 3 (JavaScript Code):

Finally, we need to create a function in JavaScript. This JavaScript code is responsible for fetching random recipes using the Spoonacular API and displaying them on a web page. Let's break down the code step by step:

1. API_KEY : This constant holds the API key required to access the Spoonacular API. API keys are typically used for authentication and authorization when making requests to external APIs.

2. recipeListEl : This variable stores a reference to an HTML element with the id "recipe-list". This is where the list of recipes will be displayed on the webpage.

3. displayRecipes(recipes) : This function takes an array of recipe objects as a parameter and displays them on the webpage. It does this by first clearing the content of the "recipe-list" element. Then, for each recipe in the array, it creates HTML elements to represent the recipe's image, title, ingredients, and a link to view the full recipe. These elements are structured and nested in the appropriate way to create a visual representation of each recipe. Finally, the assembled recipe item element is added to the "recipe-list" element.

4. getRecipes() : This asynchronous function makes a request to the Spoonacular API to fetch random recipes. It uses the fetch function to send a request to the specified API endpoint, which includes the API key and the number of recipes to fetch. After receiving a response, it extracts the JSON data and returns an array of recipe objects.

5. init() : This asynchronous function serves as the initialization point for the application. It first calls the getRecipes() function to fetch an array of random recipes. Then, it calls the displayRecipes() function to display those recipes on the webpage.

6. init() (last line) : This line of code invokes the init() function, starting the process of fetching recipes and displaying them on the webpage. This is the entry point of the script.

Create a JavaScript file with the name of script.js and paste the given codes into your JavaScript file and make sure it's linked properly to your HTML document, so that the scripts are executed on the page. Remember, you’ve to create a file with .js extension.

Inflation remains stubbornly high, with Wednesday’s report showing a 3.5 percent rise from a year earlier. These days, we’re all paying more for less — food prices inched up slightly in March, too — and, as ever, putting satisfying, budget-friendly meals on the table can be a struggle.

But budget cooking doesn’t mean skimping on flavor or making your meals any less satisfying. Below, you’ll find 12 of the New York Times Food staff’s go-to recipes for eating well without breaking the bank.

1. Gochujang Potato Stew

I’ve lost count of how often I’ve made this sleeper hit from Eric Kim — one tub of gochujang equals many, many dinners. It’s delicious, of course, but it’s also very flexible. I usually chop larger potatoes so they’re baby-potato size and sub in whatever greens are on sale (spinach, chard, bok choy) for the Tuscan kale. If you work full time and have school-age kids, you’re already in the middle of summer camp or child care planning hell , in which case you are probably feeling the need to pinch pennies. 6. Baked Potatoes

I love a good baked potato. Everyone talks about the fluffy-centered spuds and the myriad accouterments you can pile on (sour cream, cheese and scallions for me, and sometimes a little kimchi stir-fried in sesame oil with a pinch of sugar). But it’s the potato skin, crackled and sometimes chewy, where the crispy exterior meets the almost fudgy interior, that I find a dream to chew on. Julia Child’s Simple Trick for Hands Down the Best Potato Salad Ever

This one little step helps create the creamiest potato salad.

I live in the Midwest, a place where potato salad is an important meal fixture all summer long. Growing up, my mom would often buy the vibrant yellow, creamy version from the deli counter or the vinegary German-style potato salad with bacon. We never had hotdogs, hamburgers, or anything grilled without potato salad, and I loved them.

I still do now as an adult. When the weather turns warm and the grill starts calling my name, I almost always make Julia Child’s potato salad recipe. It's the creamiest potato salad that doesn't call for that much mayonnaise. And her trick is as simple as saving some of the potato cooking liquid to stir back into the salad. Here's how.

How I Make Julia Child's Potato Salad

Here are the ingredients you need to make Julia's potato salad:

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons champagne or white wine vinegar
  • 3/4 cup diced celery (2 to 3 ribs)
  • 1/2 cup diced shallots (2 large)
  • 1/4 cup chopped cornichons
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill, plus extra for serving
  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise 
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and diced

Place the potatoes in a large saucepan with water to cover them by two inches and two tablespoons of salt. Set it over high heat to bring to a boil, and then lower the heat to simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, until tender when pierced with a fork.

Scoop out and set aside 1/3 cup of the cooking liquid. Drain the potatoes and place them in a large bowl. Drizzle the potatoes with the vinegar and the reserved cooking liquid, and let them stand for 10 minutes, tossing occasionally.

Think of this step like when you reserve pasta cooking water—the starches from the pasta leach into the water, which helps create a velvety, creamy sauce when added back to the pasta. The same is true for the liquid used to cook the potatoes. The potato starch in the water helps coat the cooked potatoes and creates a dressing that's smoother and creamier. It’s a simple step with a big impact!

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine the celery, shallots, cornichons, chives, and dill and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.

Add three-quarters of the vegetable and herb mixture to the potatoes, reserving the rest to add right before serving.

Stir in the dressing, incorporating any liquid in the bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours to allow the flavors to meld.

When ready to serve, add the reserved vegetable mixture and the eggs to the salad and sprinkle with extra dill, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir gently to combine. Serve cold or at room temperature.

3 Tricks for Making Julia Child's Potato Salad

1. Slice the potatoes the same size . No need to grab a ruler, but do your best to slice the potatoes into similar sizes. This ensures they’ll cook at the same rate—no one likes raw or completely mushy potatoes in their potato salad.

2. Use a ladle . You’ll dirty a serving utensil, but I’ve found the easiest way to grab the cooking liquid is by using a ladle to transfer the hot water to a measuring cup. Pouring directly from the hot pot or dipping your measuring cup into the hot liquid can be a little dangerous, so don’t risk it.

3. Save some of the dressing . I like a creamy potato salad, but I also don’t want it so weighed down by the dressing that it feels heavy. I use about three-quarters of the dressing for mixing and save any extra for the next day’s leftovers to freshen it up before serving.

For seasoned cooks and kitchen novices, cookbook author and nutritionist robin miller takes it back to basics with great, family-friendly recipes worth making over and over again..

This chocolate chip cookie recipe is simple, straightforward and quick.

Puffy in the middle, chewy-crisp around the edges and studded with plenty of chocolate chips, it makes the ultimate chocolate chip cookie that's doughy yet fully baked, perfectly buttery and decidedly sweet, with hints of vanilla in every delightful bite.

And there’s no need to wait for the dough to chill before baking.

Many cookie dough recipes require chilling before baking to prevent the cookies from spreading out. Since we use both baking soda and baking powder in this recipe, your cookies will stay perfectly puffed-up in the middle while caramelizing and toasting around the edges.

Chocolate chip cookies

Here’s a look at what you'll need for these chocolate chip cookies.

Butter . I recommend unsalted butter for these cookies because it’s often fresher (salt is used as a preservative). Plus, when you use unsalted butter, you can control the amount of salt in the dough. If you prefer to use salted butter (or if that’s all you have), reduce the salt to ¾ teaspoon.

Sugar . We use both granulated sugar and light brown sugar in this recipe. Both add sweetness, but brown sugar ensures chewy cookies. You can use regular granulated white sugar or organic cane sugar. For the brown sugar, use light (not dark) for the best results.

Flour . Regular all-purpose flour works here, so choose your favorite variety. I used unbleached, organic all-purpose flour.

Eggs . To make sure the ingredients are in the correct proportion, use large eggs and bring them to room temperature before making the dough. Room-temperature ingredients create a smooth, well-blended batter. If you forget to pull your eggs from the fridge, run them under warm water for 30 to 60 seconds.

Leavening agents . Baking soda and baking powder add lift to your cookies and prevent them from spreading out. Just make sure your leavening agents are fresh so they can do their job. Check the expiration date on both your baking soda and baking powder before using them. When in doubt, you can check if they’re past their prime by performing simple tests. To test your baking soda, combine ½ cup hot water, ¼ teaspoon white vinegar and ¼ teaspoon baking soda. A reaction should occur immediately; if it doesn’t, replace your baking soda. To test your baking powder, combine ½ cup hot water and ½ teaspoon baking powder. The mixture should bubble immediately; if not, replace your baking powder.

Vanilla . I highly recommend pure vanilla extract (not imitation vanilla flavoring) for its superior flavor.

Salt . Salt balances the sweetness in the cookies and brings out the individual flavors of the other ingredients (butter, chocolate, vanilla). I used fine sea salt and I encourage you to do the same. Sea salt is unlike iodized table salt, which can lend a bitter flavor. If you only have iodized salt, use ½ teaspoon.

Chocolate chips . I prefer semisweet chocolate chips (over milk chocolate chips) in these cookies. If desired, you may use an equal amount of chocolate chunks.

Best chocolate chip cookie recipe

For best results, follow these tips.

Measure your ingredients correctly . For perfect cookie dough every time, use dry measuring cups for dry ingredients and liquid measuring cups (like Pyrex glass measuring cups) for wet ingredients. When measuring the flour, spoon it into the cup and level with a knife; do not pack the flour down. Save the “packing down” for when you’re measuring the brown sugar, which should be packed to ensure there are no air pockets.

Used softened butter . As mentioned above, room-temperature ingredients blend better. Remove your butter from the fridge at least two hours before baking. If you forget, warm the butter in the microwave for 7 to 10 seconds, until it’s slightly softened, being careful not to melt it.

Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy . When you beat butter and sugar together, the sugar creates little air pockets in the softened butter, creating a light and fluffy mixture. This mixture ultimately creates tender, puffy cookies with the perfect rise.

Don’t overmix the dough . Once you add the flour mixture, mix until just blended. Overmixing flour can overwork the gluten and cause tough cookies.

Use a cookie scoop . I prefer using a cookie scoop when making cookies so I’m certain the cookies are uniform in size and bake evenly. If you don’t have a cookie scoop, use a tablespoon to measure 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie, rolled into a ball (use 3 tablespoons for larger cookies).

Space the cookies apart . These cookies don’t spread much, but you still need to space them out. Why? You want heat to circulate around each cookie to ensure golden, crispy edges.

Bake until the cookies look barely done . If you choose just one piece of advice, choose this one: do not over-bake these cookies. After 8 minutes of baking, the cookies will be puffed up and appear almost doughy in the center with hints of light brown caramelization in a few spots. They will be fully cooked and settle as they cool. The longest these cookies will need is 9 minutes, so please start checking at 8 minutes.

Cool the chocolate chip cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Giving them a few minutes before transferring ensures the cookies won’t fall apart. Transferring them to a wire rack allows air to circulate around the cookies to cool them. Pro tip: I like to slide the entire sheet of parchment paper from the baking sheet to the wire rack, without disturbing the cookies.

Can you freeze cookie dough?

There’s nothing better than knowing you have cookie dough in the freezer since it means you’re always minutes away from warm, fresh-baked cookies. You can freeze the entire batch of dough in an airtight container for up to 3 months. There’s no need to thaw the dough before baking, just add a few minutes to the cooking time. You can also freeze this cookie dough after it’s been portioned into cookies (which makes popping them in the oven to bake super easy). To freeze unbaked, portioned cookies, place them on a baking sheet and freeze until firm. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Again, there’s no need to thaw the cookies before baking, simply add a few minutes to the cooking time.

Chocolate chip cookie recipe

Store your chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Makes: 36 to 42 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (or ½ teaspoon iodized salt)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line three baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Beat in the vanilla.
  • Add the dry ingredients and beat until just blended.
  • Mix in the chocolate chips.
  • Use a cookie scoop or tablespoon to roll 2 tablespoons (3 for large cookies) of dough into balls. Place the dough balls 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 8 to 9 minutes, until just barely starting to turn brown. The cookies will appear doughy, but they will settle and finish cooking as they cool.
  • Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely (I slide the parchment paper directly on the wire rack).
