My Best Hiking Experience

"C'mon, we're almost there!"

My legs and arms were shaking. Sweat was tripping down my face.  Every step felt like thousands of needles are sinking into my legs. I couldn’t take it. By that time I had three blisters on each foot. It felt like I was in Sahara! Thinking that the weather will be cold like the day befor that I dressed properly. I had a T-shirt a sweater and coat on top of all of that. My bag was fool so I had to leave the mountain of clothes on me. It was boiling hot. I felt that my back and my head are being cooked up. I was never that hot in my life. I was half asleep because I woken up by that stupid fly at five! I tripped on every rock I saw.

It was diskovery week. Grade eight was visiting Altai for a week. We lived in camps near the river. Now we were going up the mountain called The Devil's Finger. But the mountain was only getting steeper. Most of the people were already on the top screaming, laughing and taking selfies on the top of the mountain. Then I realized I forgot my hat at the bus and that I felt even worse. I touched my head. It was warm, but I couldn’t do anything about it.

Most of my friends were up the hill cheering me on. “Pointless!” - I told them. - “can’t go any faster!” They looked at me and laughed. “They have got to be kidding me! Are they doing it on purpose?!”

I was making my way slowly up the mountain. My leg stepped on something. I think it was a rock, but whatever. The rock slipped from under my boot and went tumbling down the mountain. I lost my balance and collapsed to the ground. “Are you ok?” I heard a voice behind me. “Ya shure! Just tired. I’m taking a break.” I didn’t want to say that I fell, that would be embarrassing.

There were only eight people behind of me by that time. I decided to increase the pace because I didn’t want to be the last one up. But it didn’t last. I looked down the mountain. I saw huge hills and plains at the bottom of one of the mountains, was a herd of horses coming down to take a drink. There was pretty much the same view on the other side. There was about 10 meters to the top.

I was sure I was gonna make it no matter what!

I looked up. Yana was already on the top, waving to me. "It's like she isn't tired at all"- I thought to myself. The sun was behind her so I could barely see her face. Actually, no, I could see a huge smile on her face. She was shouting something, but I couldn't hear it. I decided that the rest of the way up I will not stop to take any breaks.  Well I did, like a second later.  While I was walking I was thinking- “Why bother coming! Oh my god I could say that I’m sick or my leg hurts or something! This is the worst hiking experience ever. We came all the way to see a stupid mountain? I wish I was asleep in the cosy bed.” I was surprised and confused what did all of these people see that made them forget about everything and run up. Little did I know...

My body wasn't listening. I sunk to the ground. My lungs felt like they were about to explode. I think you could hear my heavy breathing from the bottom of the mountain. I reached for my water bottle. There was not enough for the trip down the mountain so I decided to save it for later. My throat was soar. I felt like coughing. My lips were dried. It felt like I was eating chili. It was too hot. The sun was shining in my eye’s. I could barely see, I wanted to sleep. My blisters were killing me. I thought if that is going to continue my toes will be bleeding. Everything I saw was blurry like the focus of the camera was broken. People became colorful, oval, jelly like figures. That was the moment I regretted not asking my friend for her extra hat. I was almost there, but my legs decided to stop. I sat down on the grass. For a moment I felt a cold breeze. It was like taking a sip of water after a week of not having a drop.

I was one of the last ones up the mountain. I looked up and my jaw fell. I couldn’t believe my eye’s. I didn’t feel the pain of blisters or the dry throat All of my attention was focused on the view.

I was looking at the most amazing thing I had ever saw. You could see everything from this height. I looked down and my heart sunk to my feet. The wind was playing with my hair. I took a huge breath. I looked up. They sky was the color of the sea on a sunny day. Giant clouds were rushing past me like ships on the ocean. The sun was so bright you could barely look at it. I looked back. There I saw huge field with horses and cows coming down to the lake to cool down. “I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I’m sure glad I made it!” - I told Yana filling my lungs with fresh air. “I think it was totally worth it!”

The Hiking Trip (Essay Sample)

Hiking means the venture of going long distances in the country or wilderness especially on foot for knowledge, pleasure, and exercises. Hiking is exploration because it takes one near the allure of nature. The view of trees, bushes, streams and wild flowers is pleasing. A contact is made between people and nature. The noises of nature like the whispers of a stream or the song of a bird receive a new meaning and essence for us. Besides being useful for health hiking is a great source of recreation. Once one abandons the congested streets of a city, and goes out for a walking safari away from the crazy world, one feels free. Hiking has been recognized for taking on many various forms. There are contrasts to hiking such as trekking or backpacking, but the most important is walking with a guide especially where one is not familiar with. This essay describes a hiking trip across a mountain and the importance of hiking in one’s life.

It is more fun to do hiking in a mountainous area and is exciting than in the plains. The thrill of climbing up to the top of mountain, the experience of climbing down a slope, a splendor of sunset behind a mountain above one’s head, these convey a rare beauty and interest to one’s journey. When hiking across the mountain, one walks among a winding motor road or pass across the mountain for adventure. One may have a bright sunny weather or caught up by a clever shower of rain. One may look below oneself into the huge chasm or up at the top of the mountain. The impression of unlimited independence makes one’s heart to leap with happiness.   Hiking sharpens the power of observation because nothing will escape one’s eyes. A mouse peeking out of its hole, a squirrel jumping about on the branches of the tree, a snake directing its slough, a bird flying past and all these are seen and provoke one’s interest. One has no anxiety about the home assignments, no business worries, and no panic of the examinations. One has got recreation to stand, talk and walk.

Hiking is one of the healthiest activities. It checks a complete dodge from the pressing and busy pursuits of life and therefore gives to the mind the rest it merits. Because of this rest the brain recovers its lost energies and is empowered to do twice as much activity as before. Not only the brain, but the body as well is improved by a long walk. All the legs exercise as one walks along. The digestion becomes more operational and one’s appetite is more stimulated. By the time one comes to the conclusion of the journey, one is hungry as a hyena and one enjoys the meal that one brought in the journey. After grabbing the meal one takes a sound slumber under a pitched tent till dawn.

“Walking is such a simple way to travel. It’s probably the slowest possible way to go through a place, and that means that you see it in a much deeper way.

It’s all connected—people, nature, culture. I grew up in the countryside and I’ve always felt most comfortable, most at home, when I’m in the outdoors doing something quite active. I enjoy the freedom of being outside and feeling connected to nature. But walking also has a sort of vulnerability and simplicity to it, which makes conversations and connections with people a little easier.

The idea of hiking for pleasure is relatively new in some parts of the world, where people have always used walking as a means to get around. When I was hiking from Jerusalem to Mount Sinai, people often offered to give me a ride, because they thought maybe I couldn’t afford to drive. Why would I walk, if I didn’t have to?

But I’ve had so many incredible experiences on foot. On the Jordan Trail one day, I was so tired and just wanted to get through town to sleep in my tent. But a man named Mahmoud stopped me and insisted I stay and eat with his family, and then he asked if he and his son might be allowed to wash my feet, because they must be so sore after such a long journey. What a crazy kind gesture that is, to a complete stranger. It never fails to amaze me that someone could really be that genuinely generous and giving. Hiking is full of so many pleasant surprises.”

“The outdoors have made Max and Sofia so much more resilient. Even when things are hard and they want to quit, they have to push through because we’re still three miles from the car. I love seeing them realize that, yes, they can do it.

We’ve hiked Sanitas, a pretty short but steep climb here in Boulder, probably a dozen times. But it was just this summer that Sofia did the whole thing by herself. We didn’t carry her at all, and she did it in her red sparkly, sequined dress and was determined as anything that she was going to do it on her own. Sanitas takes an hour for a lot of people to trail run, and with two small kids it’s almost a dayhike for us. But seeing Sofia realize she had just done something really hard was so rewarding.

You have to be willing to let go of a lot fears as a parent to take your kids camping and hiking. Food falls on the ground a lot, and they’re going to get dirty. You have to let them take some risks. And you have to know how much you can handle—how far you can carry them, and how much encouragement you can muster.

But it is so satisfying to watch them learn something really valuable that’s hard to learn even as an adult: You’re stronger than you think you are.”

“I love hiking in the wild because it reminds me how small we are, and yet also of our own significance. I’ve always been fascinated by humans’ interaction with nature, and as a photographer, it’s so beautiful to construct these elements into a reminder of our connection with the Earth. It’s often the subtle moments of a hike that are most memorable to me, like my one-year-old daughter running her fingers through my hair while she sat in her baby backpack on a hike through the New Zealand Fiordlands. To me, hiking isn’t necessarily something amazing in itself, but a vehicle to greater understand the world.

I recall my first backpacking trip so vividly: A disastrous multi-day trip in Sequoia National Park during a torrential High Sierra rainstorm. Waking up to a stream of rainwater pooling in my tent, with nowhere to hide, was certainly a way to usher me into a lifetime of outside discomfort and outdoor amazement. 

One of my favorite local backpacking trips is a summit called Sawtooth, a peak in the backcountry of Mineral King that requires an off-trail scree scramble to get to the summit. As my buddy and I made our basecamp in preparation for a summit one autumn morning, a current of clouds rushed in to where our tent was half-pitched. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I can remember, a tsunami of clouds rolling in and retreating, as if a winter storm on the North Shore. They lapped up to the base of our camp, teasing us like they might swallow us up and suck us into the sky. While it’s not a story of an epic disaster or skillful summit, it’s one that stands out in my memory as a literal jaw-dropping moment, where time stands still and you can fully appreciate your surroundings.”

“This past summer, I was hiking the Hump Ridge Track in New Zealand, on the bottom coast of the South Island, and it was the hottest, sunniest couple of days on record. The last day is a 20km slog that winds along a beautiful, remote beach. I was eating my lunch alone, sitting on a log, when I noticed a pod of Hector’s dolphins—super-rare to spot, and some of the smallest dolphins in the world—playing in the surf. I ran into the normally freezing water to splash around with them for half an hour.

There is something profoundly rewarding about getting somewhere beautiful of your own accord and stumbling on an experience like this. When I hike, I have to physically earn the views and the experience. Knowing that I’ve accomplished something physical maybe I didn’t think I could do, or that I’ve overcome some kind of fear while on a hike, is a powerful feeling. It’s actually a bit addicting. I always do my best thinking while I’m hiking, alone with my thoughts for hours on end.”
