Similar to the above, if you don't know what your current grade is and you enter both the coursework grades and the associated weights into the calculator, the calculator will automatically calculate your current grade and the weight of the final exam. In this situation, the weight of your final exam is calculated by taking the sum of the weight of your course work subtracted from 100%. With that in mind, if you enter too many or not enough assignments, the weight of the final exam that is calculated will most likely not match the actual weight of the final exam in your chosen course.

How to Calculate Grades Based on Percentages (With Calculator!)

Many high school teachers and college professors weigh homework, quizzes and test grades differently depending on the difficulty and significance of the assignment. Big tests (like a midterm exam or final exam) and quizzes generally account for most of the total grade, because they encompass more of the subject material.

The letter grades you receive in the gradebook after all of your individual assignments, tests, and quizzes have been graded make up your grade point average (gpa). Typically, students want to keep their gpa as high as possible. Whether you are on the verge of failing a class, or you have pretty good grades and just want to know how your grades add up, you can calculate your grades with a few simple formulas.

1. establish your professor's grading policy for how each category is weighted.

• The professor may announce this early on in the class for clarity. If they do not, you can also check with the ​ course syllabus ​ or refer to the school policy.
• Asking directly may be best because of professor preferences in their weighted grading system that may not be updated in online materials.

For example

The professor may weigh 35 percent of the final grade to quizzes, 20 percent to homework and 45 percent to tests.

2. Calculate the average of each category by adding up all of your scores for each category and divide by the number of assignments in that category.

If you have five tests with the scores of 90, 85, 100, 75 and 91, the accumulated point total for all your test would be 441. Divide the total by five for your test average of 88.2 percent.

3. Convert the weighted grade percentages to decimal value by dividing the percentage by 100.

If tests are weighted 45 percent of the total grade, the decimal would be 0.45 (45 / 100 = 0.45).

Repeat this step for each weighted section (homework, quizzes, tests, etc.).

4. Multiply the average for each category by the weight, in decimal, of each category to calculate the total points out of 100.

If your test average is 88.2 percent and is weighted 45 percent, the points for your overall grade out of 100 would be 39.69 (which is 88.2 x 0.45). Repeat this step for your other subject categories.

While most professors will maintain the final grade given, speaking with the professor can result in updating the grade through additional projects or corrections.

Additionally, if a student is not happy with the course grade, some colleges have policies allowing classes to be repeated and then averaged, which can also raise a course grade as well as your overall gpa.

5. Add the results for each category from Step 4 to find out your total grade out of 100 points.

If you calculated a 39.69 for test, 34 for quizzes and 18.5 for homework, your total grade would be 92.19 percent.

At many colleges using a four-point scale, an A requiring a total grade of 90 with a B letter grade falling in the 80 percent range.

A C grade ranges between 70 and 80 percent with a D ranging from 60 to 70 percent. Anything below a 60 percent would be considered a failing grade, or F.

These grade ranges do vary by school and professor, and they are general estimates with some colleges starting an A at 92 percent, a B at 83 percent and so on.

A weighted score is the key to understanding where your professor wants you to focus. Look especially for attendance or term papers. If your syllabus mentions extra credit, do the extra credit work because it gives you a buffer going into your final exam.

The key is to start from the max total score and follow the breakdown from tests and quizzes to homework and attendance.

As an example, a language course has a quiz every class that is worth 20 points. If you have 30 quizzes or two per week, the total quiz points is 600. If the total number of points is 1,000 and 600 or 60% (600 / 1000) comes from quizzes, you should spend extra time ensuring you maximize your quiz score.

On the other hand, point values from quizzes are often weighted lower than your midterm and final grades – often, because your instructor wants to grade you on your complete understanding of the material rather than recalling by rote something from the textbook.

Your overall grade will often be determined by your final exam. Because your class is almost complete, you should take your syllabus and your scores and be able to calculate your current class grade.

For example, your current grade may be a B+ because out of 800 possible points, you have 704 points or 88% (704 / 800). If your final exam is worth 200 points, then your total points is 1,000 and you will need 186 on your final exam for an A- (900 / 1000 is 90%) and a perfect score on your final exam worth 200 points, will still keep you at an A- for your overall grade. Why? Because your final exam was only 20% of your total grade.

Example Calculation

Here is an example. Let's say you received a 90% on your first assignment and it was worth 10% of the class grade. Then let's assume you took a test and received an 80% on it. The test was worth 20% of your grade.

To calculate your average grade, follow these steps:

• Multiple each grade by its weight. In this example, you received a 90% on the first assignment and it was worth 10%. So multiply 90 x 10 = 900. You also received an 80% on the test and it was worth 20% of the class grade. So multiply 80 x 20 = 1600.
• Add the calculated values from step 1 together. We now have 900 + 1600 = 2500.
• Add the weight of all the completed assignments together. To do this, add 10% for the first assignment and 20% for the second assignment. That gives us 10 + 20 = 30.
• Finally, divide the value from step 2 by the value from step 3. That gives us 2500 / 30 = 83.33. Therefore our weighted grade average is 83.33%.

How does this work? Most class grades are made up of several categories: homework, classwork, tests/quizzes, and the final exam. Usually, each category is worth a percentage of your overall grade. But because your final exam isn't scored until the very end, it isn't included when calculating your current overall grade. Instead, all the other categories are scaled up to consume the weight reserved for the final exam. In order to achieve a given grade goal for the entire class, course, or semester, a given minimum grade is required on the final exam, depending on both the weighted average grade to that date, and the weight of the final on the overall grade. This minimum required score can be calculated using the following formula:

Required final score = (Grade Goal - Current Grade x (100% - Weight of Final(%))) / Weight of Final(%)

The current grade is calculated based on the weighted average of all marks to date. The weight of the final test is calculated as 100% minus the combined weight of all grades to date. Therefore, if the combined weight of the scores you enter is 65% then the final exam will have a weight of 100% - 65% = 35%.

    How to convert a grade to percentage?

Our grade calculator uses the following table to convert letter grades to percentages. Note that since this is not a universally applicable table, ideally one would want to know the exact percentage scores and use these as input for the calculator, otherwise the results may be slightly off.

Q.2: Out of two numbers, 40% of the greater number is equal to 60% of the smaller. If the sum of the numbers is 150, then the greater number is?

Let X be the greater number.

∴ Smaller number = 150 – X {given that the sum of two numbers is 150}

According to the question,

(40 × X)/100 = 60(150 – X)/100

⇒ 2p = 3 × 150 – 3X

⇒ 5X = 3 × 150

Difference between Percentage and Percent

The words percentage and percent are related closely to each other.

Percent ( or symbol %) is accompanied by a specific number.

E.g., More than 75% of the participants responded with a positive response to abjure.

The percentage is represented without a number.

E.g., The percentage of the population affected by malaria is between 60% and 65%.

Fractions, Ratios, Percents and Decimals are interrelated with each other. Let us look at the conversion of one form to another:

Every percentage problem has three possible unknowns or variables :

In order to solve any percentage problem, you must be able to identify these variables.

Look at the following examples. All three variables are known:

Example 1: 70% of 30 is 21

70 is the percentage.

30 is the base.

21 is the part.

Example 2: 25% of 200 is 50

25 is the percent.

200 is the base.

50 is the part.

Example 3: 6 is 50% of 12

6 is the part.

50 is the percent.

12 is the base.

Percentage Tricks

To calculate the percentage, we can use the given below tricks.

Example- Prove that 10% of 30 is equal to 30% of 10.

Solution- 10% of 30 = 3

30% of 10 = 3

Therefore, they are equal i.e. x % of y = y % of x holds true.

Marks Percentage

Students get marks in exams, usually out of 100. The marks are calculated in terms of per cent. If a student has scored out of total marks, then we have to divide the scored marks by total marks and multiply by 100. Let us see some examples here:

Math Homework Helper: Percentages and Finding Percents

Percentages are used in lots of areas, including statistics, science and finance. In politics, percentages are even used to decide who wins elections. Read this article to learn what a percentage is, and how to calculate one!

Homework Help for Percentages

A percentage represents a fraction with 100 as the denominator. Percentages are written using the percent sign (%). For instance, the fraction 50/100 is written as 50%, and the fraction 8/100 is written as 8%. Here are a few more examples:

• 15/100 = 15%
• 75/100 = 75%
• 110/100 = 110%

Writing Fractions as Percentages

Most of the time, the fractions that we want to turn into percentages don't have 100 as the denominator. For example, if you got 17 questions right on a test with 20 questions, you might want to figure out what percentage 17/20 is equal to. To write fractions as percentages, we have to find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. The fraction 17/20 is equal to 85/100, which is equal to 85%. This means that you got 85% of your test questions correct. Here are some other examples:

• 2/5 = 40/100 = 40%
• 1/25 = 4/100 = 4%
• 18/50 = 36/100 = 36%

Sometimes, when you try to turn a fraction into a percentage, you'll find that it doesn't have an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. The fractions 5/24 and 7/8 are examples of this. Here's how you handle this situation:

• Change the fraction to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. You can do this by hand or with a calculator. For instance, 7/8 = 0.875.
• Multiply the resulting decimal by 100. This will tell you what percentage the original fraction is equal to. For example, 0.875 x 100 = 87.5, so 7/8 = 87.5%.

Finding the Percentage of a Quantity

Now that you can turn fractions into percentages, it's time to work backwards. Often, you'll need to find a certain percentage of something. For example, if you have to pay a 5% tax on your grocery bill, or you earn a 10% commission for every candy bar you sell, you'll need to calculate the amount of money those percentages represent.

Calculating Taxes and Tips

One way to do this is to change the percentage into a fraction out of 100, and then multiply it by the amount you're finding the percentage of. For instance, if your grocery bill is $50.00, you can calculate 5% of it by multiplying 50/1 x 5/100. This equals 250/100, which simplifies to 5/2. To get the final amount of tax in dollars, convert 5/2 to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Since 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5, the tax on your grocery bill is $2.50. You would use the same steps to figure out the amount of a tip.

Tip : Read percentage problems carefully. In this problem, we were finding the amount of the tax, which was $2.50. Some problems will ask you to find the amount of the total bill with tax, so you would add $2.50 to $50.00 to get $52.50 as your answer.

Calculating Commissions

Let's try another example: Sandra earns a 10% commission for each candy bar she sells, and each candy bar costs $3.00. If she sells 30 candy bars, how much commission will she earn?

The first step is to determine the total value of all of the candy bars sold by multiplying $3.00 by 30. Since $3.00 x 30 = $90.00, Sandra's commission will be equal to 10% of that amount. To calculate the commission, we have to write 10% as the fraction 10/100, and multiply it by $90.00 (10/100 x 90/1). The result is the fraction 900/100, which can be simplified to 9/1. Since 9 ÷ 1 = 9, Sandra's commission will be $9.00.

Tip : If you have a calculator handy, you can change the percentage into a decimal, and multiply the total amount by the decimal to get your answer. For example, 10/100 = 0.1, and $90.00 x 0.1 = $9.00.

How to Practice Percentages

There are tons of opportunities to practice percentage problems in daily life. You can ask your parents to let you calculate the server's tip when you go to a restaurant, or you can calculate the sales tax when you go shopping. You can also survey your friends about their likes and dislikes, and report the results using percentages.

Converting Percentages to Fractions

To convert a fraction to a percentage follows on simply from converting a fraction to a decimal.

Percentages offer a straightforward method for illustrating relationships between numbers, useful for tasks like calculating price fluctuations, determining proportions, analyzing financial outcomes, or evaluating performance. This clear approach helps present numerical connections effectively.

By mastering the calculation of a percentage within your data tables, you enhance your understanding of data and your efficiency. In this article, discover the complete process of calculating a percentage in Excel .

What is the formula for calculating a percentage?

As a reminder, a percentage is a proportion expressed on a basis of 100 units . The formula to determine a percentage is as follows: (Partial Value/Total Value)×100 . This formula converts the ratio of the partial value over the total value into a percentage, offering a clear perspective on the relative importance of that partial value.

Example of percentage calculation

Let’s take a concrete example to illustrate what a percentage is, using the formula seen above: (partial value/total value) x 100.

Imagine you want to calculate the proportion of girls in a second-grade primary class. In this class of 31 students, 17 are girls.

The partial value is then the number of girls, which is 17.

The total value corresponds to the number of students, which is 31.

By applying the formula, we get:

→ (17/31) x 100 = 54.8 %

This means that 54.8 % of the students in the class are girls. This proportion then allows you to compare with other classes that have more or less students. Indeed, 17 girls in a class of 26 students results in a higher percentage (65.4 %).

Calculating a percentage in Excel

Let’s go back to our previous example to illustrate the application of the percentage formula in Excel. We assume then that you want to calculate the percentage of girls with respect to the total class of the second grade primary. The formula in Excel would be something like this:

• Enter the partial value in a cell (for example, B2 = 17).
• Enter the total value in another cell (for example, B3 = 31).
• In a new cell, apply the percentage formula: =(B2/B3)*100. You can also format this cell as “Percentage” so that Excel automatically displays the result in percentage form without needing to multiply by 100.

The displayed result will be 54.8%, indicating that girls represent 54.8% of the second-grade primary class. If you wish, you can create a chart to make the result more visual.

Calculation if you know the partial value and the percentage

If you know the number of girls in the class and the percentage of girls, but you want to know the total number of students, the calculation is as follows:

• Enter the partial value in a cell (for example, B2 = 17)
• Enter the percentage in another cell (for example, B3 = 54.8%). Here, make sure to format the cell as a percentage. Otherwise, Excel will understand that your data is the number 54.8.
• In a new cell, enter the formula: =(B2/B3). The format of the result should be numeric since you are looking for the total number of students.

The number displayed will then be 31 students.

If you know the total value and the percentage but want to know the partial value (the number of girls in the class), enter the total value in cell B2. The formula will then be a multiplication: =(B2*B3). The result will be 17.

Calculating a rate of change in Excel

Now that we’ve seen how to calculate a simple percentage in Excel, it’s time to consider rates of change. Indeed, percentages are particularly relevant for testifying to an evolution, whether upward or downward. For the number of employees, turnover, costs, or even the evolution of your salary, the rate of change is an important calculation to know. And Excel simplifies the process.

Calculation of a percentage increase

To calculate the increase in percentage between two values, you can use the following formula: =((Final Value – Initial Value) / Initial Value) * 100.

Example : imagine you want to calculate the percentage increase in sales from one year to the next, going from 1000 units to 1200 units.

• Initial value: enter the initial value in a cell, say A1 (1000).
• Final value: enter the final value in the following cell, A2 (1200).
• In a new cell, enter the formula =((A2-A1)/A1)*100.
• Excel will display the increase in percentage. In this example, the result is 20%.

Calculation of a percentage decrease

To calculate a decrease in percentage, a similar logic is followed, using the formula =((Initial Value – Final Value) / Initial Value) * 100.

Example : to calculate the percentage decrease of the costs of an initial project of 5000 euros that has been reduced to 4500 euros.

• Initial value: enter 5000 in a cell, for instance B1.
• Final value: then enter 4500 in cell B2.
• In the cell where you want to see the result, enter =((B1-B2)/B1)*100.
• Excel will show the reduction in percentage, here 10%.

Before applying these formulas, make sure that the result cell is formatted as a percentage to facilitate the reading and interpretation of the results. Your result might appear as: -0.01000. To change this, click on “%” in the “Home” tab . Also remember that a positive value indicates an increase, while a negative value means a reduction. These small details are important for the correct analysis of data.

Summarizing percentage calculation in Excel

The basic formula (Partial Value/Total Value)×100 enables the calculation of simple percentages. For increases and decreases, we use the rate of change formula: ((Final Value – Initial Value) / Initial Value) * 100.
