On the other hand, children face immense pressure of exams and cut-throat competition, and think that parents know nothing about the demands of this fast paced world. In the end, despite love and affection for each other, both are drained of energy and are unable to comprehend the other. Consequently, there is lack of communication between the two, that with time, develops into a larger rift. George Orwell, a famous novelist quotes

“Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it and wiser than the one that comes after it.”

Elaboration to this quote is that one generation believes the following generation is missing essential values and belief, and is becoming less productive over time. Psychologists believe that most young people experience conflict during their adolescence. They are neither children anymore nor yet adults, but individuals, who are desperately searching for self-identity. As they grow up, they adopt values that differ from those held by their parents and develop an unfavourable attitude towards the adult world.

In earlier times, two or three generations lived in the same lifestyle and environment as the development was very slow. But today, nearest past is very much outdated and the world is more advanced each day. Parents do not even know many of the modern technologies and equipment children use. Conflicts actually arise because young people feel that they have a right to be independent. They look at parents as ‘enemies’ who do not let them live the way they want like by staying out late, wearing fashionable clothes or choosing their own friends. What makes things even worse is that teenagers suffer a sense of incapability and rage as they realise that financially they still depend on their parents.

Unlike West, in India, this problem is yet in the initial stages, but the gap has appeared and it is going to grow bigger day by day. “If you want happiness for a lifetime help the next generation”, says a Chinese proverb. So, it is not only the responsibility of the younger generation, but also of the elders to fill this gap with their love, affection and trust. The problem, in fact, has grown and intensified due to rise in complexities of modern life.

These complexities have arisen in the wake of modernism as faster industrialisation with increasing population has led to greater competition. The problem arises when parents begin to take things too seriously and forget that as children they had themselves loved adventure and freedom. On the other hand, children too are in the blind race of enjoying life and following their friends.

Such small things and steps can do wonders in initiating a healthy family atmosphere and reducing friction between two generations that are both right from their perspectives. Their only folly is that they are viewing the same thing from opposite directions. Age, time and experience or the lack of it, forces them to do so.

How to work toward mutual understanding with your teenager..

A college student in Thailand sent me some good questions about how to manage the generation gap between parents and teenagers.

What follows are the questions asked and my responses, not based on psychological research, but only expressive of my personal opinions as a practitioner.

Some people say the generation gap is a myth. What is your opinion on that?

The “generation gap” between parents and adolescents is real to the degree that each grows up in a different historical time and culture—imprinted by the tastes and values and icons and events that define that formative period in their lives when the impressionable adolescent begins the process of growing up.

What is the cause of it? Do we blame the parents, the children, or something else?

The generation gap is not to be “blamed” on anyone. It is a function of normal social change. Change is that process that constantly upsets and resets the terms of everyone’s existence all their lives.

Cultural differences between generations are emphasized when parents identify with the old, similar, familiar, traditional, and known, while their adolescent (at a later time) becomes fascinated and influenced by the new, different, unfamiliar, experimental, and unknown.

In most cases, the parents are culturally anchored in an earlier time and the adolescent in a later time. To some degree, social change culturally differentiates the generations. That is just how life is.

Obviously, in socially simpler, stable, low-change cultures where the young identify with parental roles they expect to imitate and occupy when grown-up, there is very little generation gap. Compare this to growing up in a very complex, rapidly changing culture where the old world of the parent stands in marked contrast to that of their adolescent.

For example: The parents grew up before the Internet revolution in one world of experience only—offline. However, their adolescent is growing up in two worlds—offline and online. Thus a profound generation gap can be created, even though parents have acquired online skills in their adulthood.

How does the generation gap affect the relationship between parents and children?

To the degree that parents can bridge the generational difference by showing an interest in the new, this can reduce the gap's potentially estranging influence.

For example, they can encourage a very powerful and esteem-endowing power reversal in their relationship if they treat the adolescent as an “expert” and themselves as "unknowing," with their adolescent as teacher and themselves as students.

For example, the parent might ask: “Can you help me learn to appreciate the music you love—it is so different from what I grew up with and became used to listening to?”

Or, the parent might ask: “Can you show me a little how to play the video game you and your friends so enjoy, because I would like to learn?”

Parents who can’t bridge cultural, generational differences with interest, but ignore or criticize them instead, are at risk of allowing these differences to estrange the relationship.

What should a teenager do when they feel that parents don't understand them?

Once children start separating from childhood , around ages 9 to 13, and start redefining themselves on the way to young adulthood, two avenues for growth are pursued. One is detaching from childhood and family for more freedom of action and independence; the other is differentiating from childhood and parents for more freedom of personal expression and individuality.

In one sense, having parents “not understand” the young person as well as they did in his or her childhood confirms that this adolescent transformation is underway. This is both affirming and lonely , so the adolescent is often ambivalent—wanting and not wanting to be understood by parents.

When young people feel that their parents don’t understand and would like them to, they can take the initiative. Being brave, they can say to parents: “There is something about my growing up that I believe you do not understand, and I would like you to appreciate. Could you listen while I try to explain, and then we can talk because this is important to me.”

When there's conflict, how can we make a compromise acceptable to both sides?

Where intergenerational conflicts arise over what is enjoyable to youth and offensive to adults, like cutting -edge media entertainment, treat conflict not as a power struggle over who will prevail, but as an opportunity to use discussion over a difference to increase communication and understanding in the relationship.

For adults, no authority is sacrificed by listening. Instead, valuable understanding can be gained when parents treat the adolescent not as a stubborn opponent to defeat, but as a valued informant who can help them know their teenager and her or his world more fully. Sometimes giving a hearing and fully listening is enough to ease parental concerns, and sometimes being given a hearing is enough for the adolescent to honor the parents' wishes.

Parents can explain: “We will be firm where we have to be, flexible and willing to compromise where we can, and in either case always want to give a complete hearing to whatever you have to say.”

Is there a way to minimize the effect of the generation gap?

I believe the best way to minimize the potentially estranging effects of the generation gap is for parents to treat their adolescent as a guide who can help them understand a time of growing up that can be quite culturally different from their own youth. When rearing adolescents, parental interest and willingness to listen count for a lot, while those parents who are more fully informed are often less fearful than parents who forbid discussion of what they don’t understand.

In addition, it can help parents and teenagers stay close when they share companionship doing what they still enjoy in common—whether participating in some traditional interests that still hold, eating out together, helping each other, going to movies, or just joking around about what both find funny.

This is the challenge of relating across the generation gap for them both: remaining communicatively connected as adolescence drives them apart—as it is meant to do.

Due largely to early retirements and a caustic mix of ageism and cost-cutting measures, businesses let too many older workers go during the pandemic — and when they left, so did a lot of institutional memory, expertise, and loyalty. With fewer younger workers entering the labor market for at least a generation, employers that don’t think beyond today’s working-age population will likely struggle to build a reliable workforce that can maintain operational efficiency and effectiveness. They must reconsider their DEI strategies to meet the demands of a new era if they want to drive operational effectiveness, increase competitiveness, widen their appeal to consumers of all ages and abilities, and build long-term resilience. Demographic change is one of the least understood yet profoundly important issues facing organizations today. The “working-age population” in the U.S. — those from age 16 to 64 — is contracting at a pace not experienced since World War II. The theory of generation gap was introduced in the year 1960s. Around this time it was observed that the younger generation questioned and went against almost everything their parents believed. This included their religious beliefs, political views, moral values, relationship advice and even the type of music and shows they prefer. Noted sociologists such as Karl Mannheim observed the differences across generations and how generations separated themselves from each other in different situations.

Generation Gap – An Interesting Concept

While generation gap is usually a cause of conflict between the children and their parents, it is actually an interesting concept. The world would have actually been quite dull if it had not been for this gap. Each generation sets its own fashion trends, introduces its own slangs, influences the development of science and technology and comes up with fresh ideas and so on.

Generation gap has led to several changes in the society especially in India where the joint family system was prevalent since ages. The concept of nuclear families has been introduced in India off late and this is also a result of the generation gap. People these days crave for privacy and want to lead their life their own way and the joint family system is a hindrance to it. Many people are thus going for nuclear families. Similarly, many changes happening at various levels in the society are a result of the generation gap.

As is the case with almost everything/concept on earth, generation gap also has its own sets of pros and cons. There is a need for developing understanding and acceptance in order to bridge this gap.

How is the Generation Gap Evident?

The people belonging to different generations have been given different names for instance those born before independence have been termed as the Traditionalists, the generation after that is called the Baby Boomers, those born between 1965 and 1980 are called Generation X and those born between 1980 and 1999 are known as the Generation Y. There are a few things that clearly show the gap between these generations. Here is a look at the same:

• Family System

People belonging to the older generations lived in a joint family system and believed in sharing and caring. However, this concept has deteriorated over the generations. The current generation wants freedom and there is hardly anyone who follows the traditional way of living in the joint families. The overall lifestyle of people has changed drastically.

The Hindi spoken by people belonging to the pre-independence era is quite different from that being spoken today and the change did not occur all of a sudden it occurred over a period of time – generation after generation. Each generation adopts a new group of slangs thereby creating some division from the earlier one. Communication between people belonging to different generations at home as well as workplace sometimes becomes quite difficult due to this change in language.

• Workplace Attitude

While people belonging to the earlier generations were good at taking directions and were loyal to a single employer, people these days get bored quite quickly and seek new jobs within a few years or at times even months of getting a job. The Gen Y people are innovative and want to share and implement their own unique ideas rather than blindly taking directions from their boss.

• Attitude towards Women

Women belonging to the older generations were mostly confined to home. They were only seen as someone who should take care of the house, going out and working was the thing of the men of the house. However, society’s attitude towards women has changed over the generations. Today, women are allowed to enter any field of their choice and work just as men.

Most of them spend their entire life working for the same organization and look forward to the same loyalty in return.

These people were born between 1946 and 1965. People from this generation are hard working but mostly not open to feedbacks. They want monetary rewards as well as promotions. Since most of them did not grow up in luxury, they make sure their children have everything they want. They also have an urge to feel appreciated. They want their employers and children to tell them that they are valued and needed. A lack of the same creates dissatisfaction among them.

The Generation X

People belonging to this generation were born between 1965 and 1980. Generation X wants their space. The best reward for them is in the form of time off. They want to do things their own way and don’t like going by any rules. They want to be told that they can do things the way they want. Most of these people saw both their parents working and the impact it had on them was not good. Hence, they give preference to their family life over their job. This generation is known to have pushed for flexible working hours.

The Generation Y

This is the group of people born between 1981 and 1999. Most of them have just entered the workforce. This group is interested in indulging into meaningful work and also looks forward to quick feedback. People from this generation are quite creative. They like working with creative individuals and at places where they are allowed to explore their creativity. This is a source of motivation for them and keeps them alive. This is also a generation that tends to get bored very quickly. Unlike the traditionalists, they change their jobs quite frequently.

The human race is constantly evolving and hence there is a change in the ideologies of people belonging to different generations. While it is completely alright to have an opinion different from the other however it should never turn into a cause of conflict.

It is sad how generation gap has been a cause of numerous estranged relationships.

How to Bridge the Gap?

Parent-child relationship is the most beautiful relationship in the world. It should be nurtured with love and handled with care. It is unfortunate to see how these relationships are strained at the hands of something as trivial as difference in opinion.

It is seen that the older generation always claims to be a better judge and a better decision maker and the younger generation is often made to feel like the culprit. It is time to understand that neither is completely wrong or completely right in what they do. In fact, the definition of right and wrong in this case is different for different generations. There is a need for acceptance and understanding here.

People from the older generation must understand that their children are born in a different age and hence their mindset is different from them. Parents and grandparents need to pay attention to why their children are behaving in the way they are behaving and as to why they have an opinion different from them rather than blindly imposing their rules and ideas on the later.

Parents must become friends with their children to understand their psyche. Children, on the other hand, must respect their parents. They must trust their parents and share their thoughts with them. Children must be open to feedback and understand that the advice coming from their parents is not wrong. It will only help them progress in life.

Parents must not judge their children and allow them the space to do things on their own rather than poking in everything. While parents give their children space, they must define certain boundaries that the later should respect the same. Two-way communication is the basis of a strong relationship and both parents and children must ensure they maintain the same. Any issues must be discussed and both the parties must try to understand each other’s point of view rather than debating against it.

Generation gap occurs because the world is constantly changing. It should be understood that people born in different ages are bound to be different from one another. People must respect each other for their individuality rather than imposing their ideas and beliefs on each other.

In this work, we introduce ChatQA 2, a Llama3-based model designed to bridge the gap between open-access LLMs and leading proprietary models (e.g., GPT-4-Turbo) in long-context understanding and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities. These two capabilities are essential for LLMs to process large volumes of information that cannot fit into a single prompt and are complementary to each other, depending on the downstream tasks and computational budgets. We present a detailed continued training recipe to extend the context window of Llama3-70B-base from 8K to 128K tokens, along with a three-stage instruction tuning process to enhance the model's instruction-following, RAG performance, and long-context understanding capabilities. Our results demonstrate that the Llama3-ChatQA-2-70B model achieves accuracy comparable to GPT-4-Turbo-2024-0409 on many long-context understanding tasks and surpasses it on the RAG benchmark. Interestingly, we find that the state-of-the-art long-context retriever can alleviate the top-k context fragmentation issue in RAG, further improving RAG-based results for long-context understanding tasks. We also provide extensive comparisons between RAG and long-context solutions using state-of-the-art long-context LLMs.

Making collaborative research breakthroughs

International researchers gather at Waterloo for a “summer school” in advanced 2D materials

A group of international and local researchers gathered at the University of Waterloo for the 2024 NSERC CREATE Training Program for Graduate Students in Scalable 2D-Materials Architectures.  

Dubbed the “2D-MATURE summer school”, this interdisciplinary seminar led by Dr. Michael Pope, a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, engaged 53 researchers in a collaborative program focused on leveraging 2D materials for advanced manufacturing applications.  

The participants came from the Universitat Duisburg-Essen in Germany, the University of Cambridge in England, Waterloo’s faculties of Engineering and Science and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology. All benefitted from a research training experience that is closely aligned to industry needs. 

The importance of 2D materials  

Investment in 2D materials research holds transformative potential for an advanced, prosperous and sustainable future. The development of these materials will contribute to more efficient energy storage systems, promote the use of renewable resources, create new markets and employment opportunities, and reduce industries’ carbon emissions.  

The applicability of 2D materials is vast thanks to their consistency. They’re made up of extremely thin layers that extend in two dimensions with almost no thickness in the third dimension which allows for a variety of useful electrical, optical and mechanical properties. 

“The future of 2D materials is promising and multifaceted with potential impacts across numerous fields,” says Pope. “Societally, these advancements can enhance the quality of life through improved consumer products, optoelectronics and energy storage materials.

"This program trains graduate students as Highly Qualified Personnel to drive innovation, bridge the skills gap, foster collaboration between academia and industry, and create next-generation technology. The participants’ diverse backgrounds add enormous value to program’s content and outcomes.” 

Innovation, sustainability and partnership   

The program invited industry partners to present on utilizing 2D materials in manufacturing processes. These guest speakers added a critical voice to the seminar, providing participants with important insights and real-world applications to help shape innovative research.  

“The industry presentations were valuable for gaining perspective on how our academic research could translate to industry and it was really exciting to see some of the work being done at companies in the Waterloo region,” says Waterloo Engineering master’s student Casey Dudding. 

Sustainability is a central theme in advanced 2D materials research for industrial applications. A key component of the program was integrating Indigenous people’s knowledge and ways of thinking to facilitate research and training towards a more sustainable world. Using this lens, participants were encouraged to share their diverse perspectives and problem-solving skills as they quantified the impact of 2D materials using an environmental lifecycle assessment. This session included topics such as the circular economy and carbon accounting, the impact of climate change and its effects on human health and the environment, and the importance of inclusive research for truly sustainable outcomes. 

Research breakthroughs and ongoing collaboration  

Some students from the Universitat Duisburg-Essen will remain on campus to continue their research collaborations with Waterloo graduate students and faculty over the next six to eight months. 

“My research contribution is to understand how the properties of the 2D materials change,” says Leon Daniel, a master’s student from the Universitat Duisburg-Essen. “I’m working with Waterloo researchers and an ultra-fast microscope to examine the critical mechanisms in the 2D material — the equipment and collaboration are generating important insights.” 

The collaboration between graduate students has been fruitful leading to several research breakthroughs such as improving graphene production, developing anodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries, improving LEDs by utilizing transport layers and using 2D films for optoelectrical applications. 

“What graduate students expect from a global research-intensive university renowned for entrepreneurship and innovation, is a research training experience that combines access to cutting-edge facilities with mentorship and networking in an international collaborative setting. And this is exactly what the program delivers,” says Dr. Mario Ioannidis, Chair of Waterloo’s Department of Chemical Engineering.

If border czar Harris stays in charge, every week will bring a never-ending stream of illegal alien rapists, bloodthirsty killers, and child predators to go after our sons and our daughters.

In reality, migrant crossings are down 55 percent since new asylum restrictions took effect seven weeks ago,the Homeland Security Department said Thursday.

This afternoon, the vice president was back in Washington for a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She did not attend his speech to Congress yesterday, her campaign citing a scheduling conflict. As she campaigns, Harris will have to continue navigating one of the toughest foreign relationships for President Biden, one that's cost him some support within the Democratic Party and in key battleground states.

It will now fall on Harris to bridge the gap ahead of November.

And just four days into her campaign for president, Vice President Harris is starting to see a surge of support and new openness from key voting blocs that could ultimately determine the election.

Well, let's talk more about that Laura because President Biden, as you well know, won women voters by roughly 57 percent in 2020.

How is the Harris campaign trying to capitalize on that success and reach out to that voting bloc?

Just in the few short days since she launched her campaign, Geoff, they have held nonstop calls with women, be it Black women, Latinas. Tonight, they're going to hold a call with white women organizers and grassroots organizations across the country.

One on Sunday with Black women organizers, 44,000 Black women joined that call that had campaign officials on it. And within the few hours of that call, they raised $1.5 million while people were on that call. And then they had a one with Latinas just last night that roughly 4,000 Latinas joined, and they raised $118,000 on that call. So the campaign is really hitting the ground running trying to mobilize women across the board.

I know you spoke — speaking with key organizers in multiple states today. What did they tell you?

I spoke with LaTosha Brown. She's the co-founder of Black Voters Matter in Georgia.

She helped lead that call with 44,000 Black women and. She said she's never seen this level of excitement. She compared it to when Barack Obama ran in 2008, saying that it's just seismic. And she said that Harris has a history of engaging with a number of key constituencies from Black women to Asian American voters and women across the board.

LaTosha Brown, Co-Founder, Black Voters Matter:

As a vice president has been leading on two issues that I think Black women care deeply about. That's reproductive rights and voting rights. She has a particular kind of guilty young people, because there were some young people that, if there was a concern about the campaign, there were young people who are deeply, deeply upset with this current administration about Gaza.

LaTosha Brown said that one of the young people she's been talking to was her niece, who had started to say she was actually on board, when previously her niece was not necessarily happy about President Biden running.

And I also spoke to an Arizona organizer, a Latina there, who said that the shift has already happened when they have been knocking on doors, that they used to hear questions about whether or not President Biden was going to stay in the race. And now they're more energized and some undecided Latinos in that state are saying that they're curious about Harris and that they want to learn more about her.

Well, let's return to this issue of young voters, how they view the Harris campaign. What's your reporting suggest about that?

So we spent some time in Michigan, my producer, Shrai Popat, and I.

And in April, we held a roundtable with young voters under the age of 30, including two young women of color. And one of them, Saba Said (ph), we checked in on, she's an uncommitted voter, those voters that are not happy about President Biden's response to Israel-Gaza. And she said that she's unsure if she will vote for Harris, but that she's much more open to her than she was to President Biden.

And then we also checked in with a young Black woman, Melinda Billingsley (ph), who said that Biden was too moderate for her, but that she — If the election were held today, she would vote for Harris. And so she hopes that she hears more from Harris about criminal justice reform.

Well, that's interesting because Republicans are trying to paint Kamala Harris, the vice president, as being far more progressive than President Biden. This line that she's a San Francisco liberal, I keep hearing over and over again.

Unpack that strategy for us, the Trump campaign strategy, and trying to define the vice president.

Well, they have been really rushing to try to define her after — and some of it is repeated attacks that they used on President Biden.

But one thing that they have been doing a lot, Geoff, is they have been calling Vice President Harris a DEI higher, diversity, equity, inclusion, higher, including, including — and that's included some Republican lawmakers, allies of Trump.

And Trump has also himself called Harris — quote — "dumb as a rock." He did that this week on TRUTH Social, really questioning her qualifications for the job. And a lot of the Black Democratic organizers that I spoke to said that calling Harris a DEI hire is just another dog whistle.

And then Donald Trump again recently on the campaign trail repeatedly mispronounced Kamala Harris' name.

So now we have a new victim to defeat, lying Kamala Harris, lying, L-Y-I-N apostrophe.

For three-and-a-half years, lion Kamala Harris has been the ultra-liberal driving force behind every single Biden catastrophe. I used to call it Biden migrant crime, but now I will probably change it to Harris or Kamala.

Her name is Kamala. And this is something that Donald Trump did in 2020 as well. He and his surrogates repeatedly mispronounced her name.

And a lot of Democrats have said that it's just another dog whistle.

Well, what's the campaign strategy for dealing with these attacks? Because I have spoken with Democratic strategists who say, yes, this is offensive, but Kamala Harris, the vice president, should not take the bait. She should rise above this.

What is the campaign saying?

Well, so far, she hasn't been taking the bait. They haven't really been responding to this at all, Geoff.

And in some cases, they're preempting it. So in the case of past comments made by Trump's vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance, Democrats are trying to get ahead of that, highlighting some disparaging comments he made in 2021.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Vice Presidential Candidate: We're effectively run in this country via the Democrats, via — via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they have made. And so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too. And it's just a basic fact.

You look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC, the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children. And how does it make any sense that we have turned our country over to people who don't really have a direct stake in it?

Kamala Harris is the stepmother to her husband's two children. And her family has come out defending her, as well as Doug Emhoff's ex-wife.

And Democrats have highlighted those comments, Geoff, preempting a lot of those attacks, and essentially trying to make the argument that Republicans are out of step with voters when it comes to reproductive rights and when it comes to privacy around family planning.

Coming into Your Own in a Family Business

As president of Thomas R. Birnie and Sons , Rob Birnie sits atop the succession of a 100-year-old Canadian family business. He’s connected to the past, present and future of the plumbing company and has overseen its multigenerational transition and success.  

On “Toolbox for the Trades,” Birnie talks about bridging generations, using technology to create change, and being a leader who puts employees ahead of ego.

Looking back on 100 years of industry change..

The family business has been around for a century and was started by Birnie’s great grandfather. His dad got into the business in 1971, and Birnie came in full-time in 1997. His own long tenure, as well as his connection to his family’s past, gives him a bird’s-eye view of the progress that technology has brought. 

“My grandfather started a computer system in 1984 just to collect data on job addresses,” he says. “But we were on paper and pencil right up until 2006.” 

Birnie has seen both sides of the new wave of technology. 

“I’ve been able to see how we can best implement systems and newer technology for internal situations with ServiceTitan ,” he says. “It makes us more efficient and makes people’s lives a lot easier.”

Experiencing the technological generation gap.

Birnie recalls how his father first bought a sewer camera in 1993. 

“He was so excited,” Birnie says. 

The camera had the ability to specifically locate where underwater plumbing issues were happening—which was way better than manually searching for them. 

“The locator would tell us how far out, how deep down it was,” Birnie says. “My grandfather would just watch us, look at how it worked and say, ‘You’re lazy.’”

Bridging that tech generation gap.

When technology enters a workplace that’s been around for 100 years, there’s bound to be a clash between the way veterans and newbies think about getting the job done. 

“We had this amazing generational gap that we were able to connect,” Birnie says. “We had people who loved technology and people who hated it but have amazing customer service skills.” 

The challenge that became a blessing is that the tech camp was able to learn customer service from the veterans. And the veterans picked up tech skills from the younger generation.

Solving a resistance to change.

A critical part of the method to overcome resistance to change was hiring a business coach, Birnie says. 

“My coach said that, with all the changes we needed to make for the company to stay viable in the future, we were going to meet a lot of resistance,” he says. “He also said that if I managed to make all of these changes and keep everyone employed it would either be a sheer miracle or a sign of my bad management. Some people said, ‘Nah, this isn’t for me.’ Other people stuck it out, and they’re still with us.”

Buying into the Color Code test.

“Color Code” uses a personality assessment designed to work from the inside-out to provide critical insight into why a person does what they do. Reds are power wielders. Blues love to give of themselves. Whites are peacekeepers. Yellows like to have fun. 

Birnie says administering the Color Code test helped him determine employees’ motivations instead of judging their behaviors.

“Behavior is like a filter,” he says. “Motivations tell you why you do what you do. Learning this has helped me in relationships in many ways—including knowing how people see me.”

Getting buy-in from employees.

Before having a revelation, Birnie’s leadership style was very enmeshed with instructions and metrics. What he was missing, he says, was getting buy-in from employees.

“Simon Sinek has this beautiful video where he talks about buying a car,” Birnie says. “And the purpose of buying the vehicle is not to put fuel in it. The purpose of putting the vehicle is so you can go experience things. You need the fuel, but that’s not the purpose of what you’re doing.”

Good leaders wash away selfishness and ego.  

“As the leader, you can’t be playing for yourself,” Birnie says. “You have to come in and play for others. For example, you don’t hear a baseball coach yell out, ‘Hey, you’re at 22 percent conversions, we need you at 30 percent.’ 

“You don’t coach the metrics. You coach the people. You coach the behavior. And you don’t do it for yourself. You’re doing it to see other people succeed.”

Navigating family dynamics in a family business. 

Birnie’s grandfather had four children, and each of them had a child in the company. He says the family was blessed with having a transitional lawyer. 

“But I would say the biggest thing to do to achieve success is to identify roles and responsibilities,” he says. “And be able to identify the founders’ values. If you don’t do that there will be struggle. So, you set clear expectations and develop lines of communication.”
