Video Editing: Past, Present and Future

Video editing refers to the process of selecting and combining short motion picture films commonly referred to as shots into comprehensive narratives that are eventually used in creating a finished film. A video is a sequence of still pictures that are used to represent scenes in motion. Video editing has been considered by some people to be an art, while to some it is an important technique in video making when it is considered as a technique, video editing then is used to mean the actual process of joining two video clips physically to create a sequence which has a particular meaning attached to it.

The reason why video editing is considered art is that it involves creating a comprehensive meaning from two or more shots that could not be bearing the same meaning. Others regard video editing to be all the processes involved in arranging shots to come up with a whole product.

Digital editing is now the dominant technology being used in video and film editing. This is so different from the way editing was initially done when nonlinear editing systems were not developed. One of the greatest impacts of digital editing has been the transfer of many of the responsibilities involved in film editing to a few people unlike in the past when aspects like pictures, music, and visual effects were handled by different people. Today, unlike in the past editors together with a few assistants can handle most of the work required in editing. The use of digital editing technology has become an important cost-cutting tool especially for films that have lower budget allocations.

The main purpose of video editing is to add different elements to the motion picture. These elements for example include bringing out the emotional part of a performance, helping the viewer’s mind to connect with the images, create illusions like urgency, sorrow, or danger where some do not exist. Editing also is used to create excitement, shock and even arouse the viewer’s emotions and curiosity to discover more. The way a film is edited also serves to create pace and direct how the narration of the story is done.

Knowledge on how editing has evolved in the making of videos and film is of great importance in helping editors to make informed choices about particular aspects of their work. Film editing has been very important in the past and will continue to occupy an important position in the creative evolution that is taking place in the video and film industry today and sometimes shorter. This paper explores how video editing techniques have changed from the past to the present day. It finally explains how video editing systems are likely to change in the future owing to advances in manufacturing and computer technology.

The first videos did not have a soundtrack and were commonly referred to as silent movies. Silent movies were dominant during the years before1920. Some of the notable producers during the silent cinema era include the Lumiere brothers, George Mêliées and Pudovkin. The editing techniques used for making the movies were relatively simple and involved setting a camera before what was considered to be the object of interest and shooting the event or object.

The movies made around 1895 were not edited and were shorter in length for they usually did not run for more than a minute.they were very simple and mainly included single shots which progressively increased in length as time went by. The editing of silent movies is thought to have begun with the works of George Mêliées whose later movies lasted to a quarter of an hour. Editing was necessary because the movies are composed of more than two shots. Mêliées incorporated various theatrical devices in his movie-making to make them more dynamic compared to those produced by the Lumiere brothers Video editing gained more prominence with the works of Edwin Porter who began to use visual continuity to enhance his video making.

Editing efforts at that time were concentrated on the single-shot but Porter was able to edit more than one shot and merging them to create longer movies. By doing this porter was able to compile a video comprising of 20 shots titled “ The life of an American Fireman “in the year 1903. The movie runs for six minutes. Porter used newsreel footage of r a real fire and specially prepared interiors to show the viewer how the woman and her child trapped within a burning building are rescued. Scenes within the interior of the building were intercut with those captured from the exterior to create dynamism within the film. Intercutting was also used to heighten tension in the rescue scene.

This effect was also enhanced by the use of close-ups which showed images of a human hand pulling the lever of the alarm box. Porter used juxtaposition to create new realities from shots got from different locations. In addition; he was also able to make his films appear more authentic compared to other videos made earlier. Porter successfully used the editing techniques described above to create another successful video running for 12 minutes in length titled “ The Great Train Robbery ” in 1903.

In this particular video, Porter frequently presents the viewers with midstream shots (halfway shots) to avoid the lengthy narrations commonly used in the film to indicate changes in location and time. A midstream shot was effective in informing the viewer that time has passed while using an exit shot before an action ends was used to communicate to the viewer that the location has changed. A new shot at the beginning of action was also used by Porter to communicate a change of location. These techniques besides informing the viewer of the changes in location and time greatly improved the narration of the story and enhanced the viewer’s understanding of how events unfold in the film.

Videos that have a soundtrack began to be produced at the beginning of 1920. The first movie with sound to be widely distributed in American is titled “ The jazz singer” and was produced in the year 1927. However numerous movie reviews differ that this was the first sound film because the movie by John Barrymore titled Don Juan and produced in the year 1926 is cited in some reviews as containing some musical sound which was performed by the New York Philharmonic and sound features created using the vita phone system.

Sound editing was done using sound on disc systems. They were not so effective and a decade nearly passed since the first sound films were produced in 1900. The editing of sound using sound on disc c systems involved recording sound using a phonograph and playing back the sound and synchronizing it with the motion pictures projected using the movie projector. The introduction of sound in film generated a lot of excitement in the public and drew more people to the Cinema. At about this point in time, broadcasters began to record sound and film images and used them to relay news stories as they happened. At first, the sound projected with the motion pictures was not edited. Commentaries were later added to make the sound in films livelier.

This progressed to a new technique known as doubling/dubbing which mainly involved mixing the original sound and verbal voice over’s to create a new mix of sound that was then recorded in a new soundtrack, other sounds were also recorded on the different soundtrack but they would be synchronized with the original soundtrack to create the desired effect for film or news broadcast.

The design of new machines like the synchronizer, the Moviola editing machine, and the Steenbeck during the early years of 1930 made it possible to run different soundtracks together with pictures at the same time. The availability of these machines also made it easier to insert video shots at any point the editor desired the increased use of these editing techniques is what is known as Nonlinear editing.

As time went by, the remixing and recording of sound was done in specially built dubbing theaters. Dubbing and rerecording of sound were not smooth either in these theaters. Poor sound quality and background noise would distort the dubbed sound and consequently result in poor dynamic and frequency range. To handle these problems, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and sciences set up a common standard that ensured that dubbing in theaters and cinema was done using the same variables.

The Dolby Corporation was also able to reevaluate the standards set up by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and sciences during the 1970s. Generally, during the 1930s many techniques used for editing sound in the movie industry were well refined to effectively facilitate the editing of sound in film. Some of these techniques continue to be used today although in a limited way.

It is also important to note that there was a common editing practice that involved replacing sound recoded while shooting images with the refined sound that was refined in a dubbing studio because of its better quality. Post synchronization editing also became an important practice because the sound could be re-voiced and then used to translate the finished video into several different foreign languages.

This editing technique also enabled actors to rehearse the written script until the editor could get a perfect match of the sound. This technique of replacing dialogue automatically is still being used today in video making. A Hollywood wood sound engineer named Jack Foley was able to create sounds of footsteps and other sound moves as well which are greatly used in movie recordings in holly wood video-making studios.

The sound was also later introduced in stereo videos during the 1940s and this led to the development techniques used to spread soundtrack across a wide area. This technical advancement formed the basis on which modern multi-channel designs like Dolby surround, Dolby Digital, and DTS (digital theatre systems )are based. Mixing in stereo became automated during the 1980s. Earlier before, the mixing was done manually. Editing of sound using magnetic recording techniques came to replace optical sound recording and editing. The quality of sound was better compared to the sound output developed through optical technologies.

Magnetic video editing has been used for film editing and sound editing throughout1980s until the introduction of digital technology which has been in use till today. The use of digital technology in sound editing has made it possible to use waveform editing which enables the editor to cut or correct very fine sound files that could be imperfect. Later the editor can then proceed to edit the final sound sequence the way they desire. Through waveform editing, it is possible to change the name of the audio file being edited but still be able to save it in the same folder where the file was stored before it was edited.

Video editing in the past faced similar problems like sound editing. The editor was required to cut the recorded tape physically. This editing practice however changed with the introduction of linear editing which made it possible to copy and edit video shots from the source to the record VTR (videotape recorder ) editing machine for linear progression. Tape recording is still used today although its application is very limited. The standard videotape used for video editing measured at one inch.

The release of highly portable videotapes late in the 1970s made it possible to record both sound and picture at the same time. When the Sony beta camp was launched in 1986, the use of videotapes formally ended. The Sony beta cam SP continued to be used for making films, dramas, and documentaries. Changes in the use of the Sony beta cam SP as the industry’s standard started at the beginning of the 1990s.

Greater innovations and developments in video editing also came with the works of D.W Griffith who is still regarded as the pioneer of film editing in a modern sense. His work had great influence in the editing of holly wood and Russian films. His contributions to film production and editing span different areas like variation of shots to create impact, the extreme long shot techniques, close-ups, and the cutaway together with various shot tracking techniques.

He is also recognized for introducing techniques to vary the pace within video and films. Besides these contributions, Griffith also introduced parallel editing and this can be regarded as his greatest contribution in film and video editing.pararell editing enables the editor to run two or more sets of actions within a single film sequence.

Parallel editing is frequently used to link two or more related sets of simultaneously occurring actions though these actions often take place in different locations.this editing technique has been useful in creating tension the developing the plot or storyline in the video, creating multiple points of view, and creating dramatic irony. Dramatic irony involves presentations in which some of the characters in the video are unaware of some unfolding events that are hidden from the main action.

Griffith frequently used juxtaposition of shots to achieve more dramatic effects than most of the editors whom he came to succeed within the film industry. In 1908, Griffith began using scene fragmentation as an innovation on the visual editing techniques during his time. In his work titled “ The Greaser’s Gauntlet ”, Griffith makes cuts from long and full body shots and proceeds to mix them to heighten the emotions of the viewers and also brings them closer to the scene where the action is taking place (through the screen)

Griffith continued to experiment with different techniques to increased emotional arousal among the viewers by using close-ups taken at very short distances from the object and the camera. A good example of where this technique is explicitly used is his film titled “T he Enoch of Arden” , produced in 1908 and which tells the story of a woman separated from her husband. At one point, Griffith uses a close-up of the woman’s face as she grieves for the return of her husband; this scene greatly arouses the emotions of the audience and serves to increase their involvement in the film.

Many video makers today still use scene fragmentation to create long shots, medium shots, and close-ups so that they can draw the audience to the emotional parts of the video. Griffiths’s editing innovations continued to dominate and influence filmmaking till the period ending shortly after 1918. Vsevolod Pudovkin went ahead to innovate on previous editing techniques started by Griffith and is particularly noted for scene construction in the editing process.

The main outcome of scene construction was that conveying ideas related to the storyline became easier. Video editing was taken a notch higher by Sergei Eisenstein, a Russian filmmaker who was highly involved in filmmaking in the 1920s. His contributions to video editing are contained in the theory he developed which has five major components namely; metric montage, rhythmic montage, tonal montage, over tonal montage, and intellectual montage.

Metric montages refer to editing about the length of the shots, editing mainly involves shortening the shorts to create tension, rhythmic montages involve editing processes to ensure continuity of visual patterns by matching them with actions projected on the screen. On the other hand, tonal montage refers to a series of editing actions meant to create changing emotional patterns for characters appearing on the screen. Intellectual montages refer to editing decisions introducing creative ideas into sequences with high tension (e.g. emotional tension, conflict). Over tonal montage refers to the use of metric, rhythmic and tonal montage together. These editing techniques make it possible to vary the pace, emotions and integrate new ideas that may not have been thought of when shooting a film.

Digital technology is the main application used for video editing today. The production of digital videos began during the early 1980s and this followed the introduction of video camcorders by two companies; Sony and Panasonic. In the following years so the introduction of different digital editing technologies. the introduction of the high-speed firewire by Apple in the year 1995 perhaps made the greatest impact on video editing for it enabled camcorders to be directly linked with computers making it possible to download and edit videos from a computer into fine quality video.

Digital systems make the editing process faster and the quality of the output is better when it is compared with that got through using the earlier editing systems. Digital systems are more flexible and allow the editing of sound and picture simultaneously. Digital editing has been increasingly used in both and television industry because the process of editing using digitally is faster. Besides reducing the time needed for editing, the use of digital editing is also known to be very effective in editing complex tasks consistent with the desired technical quality.

After the video has been captured, it is transferred to the computer using specially designed software. Digital editing is anon linear and the main requirement a person needs is a computer hard disk and video editing software. Examples of these video editing soft wares include Adobe premiere, Apple final cut pro, Windows movie maker, and Ulead video studio. After files have been transferred, they are sorted according to type and then individual clips are edited, these are then added up together to create the final product. Most digital video cameras store files in the DV format and it is therefore important that the editor uses a computer with high memory capacity.

The future direction in which the digital revolution is headed is not very clear. However, there are indications that people will not be relying so heavily on the current digital facilities to do video editing.

According to Anderson the revolution been seen in video editing does not stop with digital editing as we know it now. Factors like faster advances in digital circuitry and computer technology will bring many changes in the video post-production process. Due to these advancements, the available digital editing facilities and devices being used now are likely to become redundant just like the early editing techniques which involved shot cutting. It is most likely that in the coming years, there will be full digitalization of the production, post-production, and broadcasting processes.

Anderson further notes that the number of industrial, commercial, and cable outlets for video editing continues to increase day by day. Owing to this development, there is greater anticipation that there will be the development of new video editing programs tailored to suit the various needs of the diverse audiences that these cable outlets serve. In the future, production in television may record significant production increases but this is likely to come with a corresponding decrease in the size of the audience for particular programs. The gross effect of this likely situation is reduced costs for production, post-production (editing), and broadcasting without any significant alteration on the quality of sound and picture.

Digital equipment that will be used for video editing in the future will be designed to provide producers and editors with the advantages of fast setup time and high reliability. For producers, the equipment may enable them to record components and not mere television signals. The component approach in recording allows light and color information to be recorded differently hence reducing the problems frequently associated with poor signals commonly experienced when video signals are transferred for editing in post-production processes.

There is a greater possibility that shortly, most of the projects done for television will be shot and edited entirely using the video format. This will also make it possible to convert the video into the standard video format if there is a need for this, for example, the need for broadcasting the video and playing back the video.

Editing systems of the future are likely to be able to provide instant access to previously store audio and video files and thereby reducing significantly the need to conduct time-consuming g searches for important video or audio information that is normal for most of the video editing systems in use today. A device with these capabilities has been developed (the CMX 600 offline editing system) but its large-scale use in the film and video making industry was limited by high cost and the necessity to store small audio and video files on relatively large computer hard disks.

Instant access to stored information will make a significant change in the way video editing will be done in the future, editors will for the first time b able to alter the length of a sequence by either making it short or a bit longer without having to cut out some sequences.

Advancements in editing systems wail also enable editing of programs in real-time. This, for example, means that an editor can edit a video program that runs maybe for an hour using a little time of the total amount of time allocated for the program to run. Similarly, there is a greater possibility that future editing systems will make it possible to transfer audio and picture files on tape directly to videotapes hence doing away with the need to transfer such information using telecine techniques. This possibility can be realized by connecting specialized scanning machines to a computerized editing controller to enable the production and editing of video from the film.

Editors now can use both video and film editing techniques together due to the increasing number of video editing controllers that utilize microprocessor-based electronic technologies to increase processing speed and ensure flexibility. In the past decade, there have great efforts by researchers and equipment manufacturers to modify video editing applications so that they can be used in film editing. Some of these efforts have for example been directed towards developing computer software that can be used together with normal video editing hard wares or modified video hard wares or a combination of both video and film hard wares. Such a solution was developed by consolidated film industries which designed sophisticated software that was able to convert SMPTE time codes into short film counts.

CMX/Orrox Corporation has also developed similar software named FLM-1 to be used in video-assisted film editing. The system works by connecting a video processor to a special micro-processing machine which is in turn connected to any normal sound or film editing device.

Despite the changes that have taken place in the way video editing is done, there remain some important facts that are not likely to change fast as the technology used in video editing has been changing. The first is that editors will continue to follow the basic steps involved in video editing. These steps include preparation; offline editing and online editing.technological changes will have very little effect on these three steps. The second fact is that video editing is a process that must be must follow a logical sequence so that the final product can be of fine quality. Editing will also remain a creative and technical undertaking. This means that good editing is based not only on the knowledge of video editing equipment and technologies but also requires creativity (artistic skills) to make the scenes meaningful.

Another important fact about video editing that is not likely to be influenced by technological advances is that video editing will remain a cooperative process in which different people will have to bring their skills and ideas together. The final product of the video editing process is a combination of efforts in a team comprising of the producer, the director, the associate director, the script supervisor, audio technicians, videotape operators, and the video editor.

Linear editing systems were used first before products like the Adobe premiere were introduced into the market.linear editing often involved the use of numerous high-tech equipment like television monitors. The process of linear editing took more time compared with nonlinear video editing. the editor had to be involved in almost all levels of the editing process. The process involves editing each shot at a time from the beginning t to the end in an orderly sequence. Under this system, editors are required to watch the video clips first then proceed to write notes on paper on what needs to edit before the actual editing process begins. This makes the editing process to be long and tedious.

The editors used a video switcher to mix different videos when editing two or more videos. If it was necessary to add new materials to lengthen the video, the editor was supposed to go back to the inset ion point and then re-edit the whole video. Non-linear editing was enabled by powerful desktop computers that were made during the 1990s. video footage was digitized (changed from sound and pictures to ones and zeros).when clips are downloaded on the computer, the editor can move them the way they like, add or remove shots, shorten or lengthen the video, actions that were not possible to carry out in linear editing. Nonlinear editing also makes it easy to make changes to the edited video without necessarily having to re-edit the whole video.

Nonlinear editing systems besides having the advantages highlighted above are known to produce pictures and sound with high quality compared to analog video formats. This quality can also be retained even when multiple digital copies are made from an original digital source.

Despite the many differences that exist between the two editing systems, they all share some common similarities. Video editing under the two systems begins with transferring data from videotape or film from the source onto the editing medium. In addition, the two processes share a common objective of improving sound and picture clarity so that that the audience can be more engaged in the unfolding events in the video or film. Technological advancements have been progressively integrated within both nonlinear and linear editing systems over the years. It is believed that future technological advances will make video editing faster, easier and improve the quality of the final product.

The Essay Structure of Video Editing

A good way to plan and edit a non-fiction piece is to structure the storyline like you would a formal essay. In this post we’ll take our cues from writing fundamentals and show you how.

Video Editing and Post Production

Think back to high school English class, and having to write essay after essay. I don’t know about you, but my english teachers drilled a very specific structure into my head for writing these essays and reports. This structure proved incredibly useful when I aced my college writing class, but I also realized over time that I was subconsciously using the basic fundamentals of essay organization in my videos – specifically non-fiction ones.

Some of this came through in the initial planning stages, but a lot of the time I was handed several reels worth of interviews in the editing phase with no clear plan besides “this is what they want the video for.” The basic essay structure was incredibly useful in taking all of that content and forming it into a coherent piece that was easily followed by the audience. So, indulge me for a second while I recap “Essay Writing 101” for you and you’ll see how applying these concepts to an “essay structure” of editing can make things easier for you to edit together a cohesive story  and easier for your audience to get the point .

There are three important characteristics of a well-structured essay that can easily apply to editing a video: An “ hourglass shape ”, a thesis statement  and a “ roadmap ”.

The Hourglass Shape

The idea behind the hourglass shape is to start broad : general background on your topic to introduce it to your audience. As the intro goes along, you quickly get more specific , ending with your thesis statement /main idea, which sets the tone for the main body of your content.

Your main content stays specific to your subject and is meant to backup your thesis – it’s your evidence for your main point. Then at the end, you reach your summary. Your summary  reiterates your thesis in a new way to sum everything up, then you start to get broader in topic, explaining why your main idea matters in the big picture of things.

So: start with a broad background, get more specific until you reach your thesis (main idea), stay specific and support your thesis, sum it all up, then get more general and explain why it matters to your audience in the big picture.

One advantage of structuring your video like this is that your audience doesn’t get thrown into the story “ in medias res ” (latin for “in the middle of things”). Starting “in medias res” is a great technique for narrative and fiction pieces, but it can often be a hindrance to non-fiction work, especially short form where you need to get the audience up to speed quickly.

Another advantage is that you have a clear understanding when organizing the story of what will support your main idea and what won’t , so you can cut your content down to what really matters.

A third advantage to structuring your video this way is that by finishing with how this relates to the big picture, you give a global/grand scale of importance to your message and leave this as the final lasting thought for the audience.

The Thesis Statement

The thesis is the point you are trying to make. Every good essay and every good video try to make a point – a reason why the audience should pay attention. A good thesis has a number of components, but the main two that apply here are:

  • A clear and specific message/point you are trying to get across
  • Evidence to support your point

There are actually three types of thesis statements : analytical , expository (explanatory), and argumentative ; these just so happen to fit well with common reasons someone would want a video!

  • An analytical piece breaks down research /evidence on an issue into the key points so the audience can better understand it, and usually comes to a non-controversial fact-based conclusion (if it even has a conclusion).
  • An expository piece explains something to the audience, but it’s not trying to make the audience think one way or another.
  • An argumentative piece tries to convince the audience that an opinion or claim is true/valid and supports it with evidence. It can be similar to an argumentative piece, but the thesis and the conclusion drawn are subjective, even when supported by evidence.

Knowing what type of piece you are editing informs what supporting content you need to find and how best to order that content. You need to know what you’re saying and you need to know how to back it up!

The Roadmap

One of the things I was taught in school is that your essay thesis should contain the topics of your supporting evidence , and these topics should be arranged to match the order of your body paragraphs, basically creating a roadmap for your essay.

For example: “People should do [thing] because of [evidence x], [evidence y], and [evidence z]”. The supporting body paragraphs would cover the topics of x, y, and z in that order. This gives the audience an understanding of what’s to come.

In video, you don’t always have the luxury of having your talent or interviewee say that perfect statement that summarizes all of the evidence in the right order. What you do have is the ability to either create your roadmap ahead of time and make sure you get those topics covered, or you can group all of the content you have into the different topics and decide on what best supports your message and how best to arrange it for flow.

This is the basic function of an editor, but you’d be surprised how many go right into laying things in the timeline without an actual plan in place! Having this “roadmap” lets you quickly sift through content to find what fits, have an idea of what transitional content you’ll need, and lay it all in the timeline without having to guess what order works best.

A Practical Example

Earlier this year I did a project for KIPP Academy in Nashville, TN, to be shown at a fundraising event for the expansion of the program from one middle school to K–12 and 6+ schools. I’ve written about this project before from a post-production perspective, but one thing I haven’t talked about is the planning. We sat down with some of the staff from KIPP, listened to their vision and reason for wanting this piece, and we asked them questions about the school, what the ultimate outcome they were trying to accomplish, etc. As we went through this meeting, I started forming a thesis and roadmap for the project.

Their ultimate goal for the video was to “develop a case for why KIPP needs to grow” and based on that, why people should donate and invest in KIPP:

I had my message, they had given me an idea of what evidence we would cover, so I drew out a (super messy) handwritten timeline in my notebook:

Since you probably can’t read my terrible handwriting, here’s how it was structured:

  • History of the school
  • What they’ve done at the middle school (results)
  • Practical (better high school & college grad rate, etc.)
  • Personal (character building, neighborhood transformation, etc.)
  • How the audience can help

This “ essay structure ” of editing had a huge impact on how we made this video, but I use it on everything from small corporate testimonials to huge multi-interview videos for marketing campaigns. Matt Zoller Seitz (various venues) A writer and director by trade, Zoller Seitz is nonetheless probably best known as a prominent American cultural critic.  He’s made over 1000 hours of video essays and is generally recognized as a founder of the video essay movement in high-brow periodicals.  A recognized expert on Wes Anderson, Zoller Seitz is also notable because he often mixes other cinematic media (especially television) into his analysis, as in the above example, which doubles as an experiment in the absence of voiceover.

Various contributors, Press Play Co-founded by Matt Zoller Seitz and Ken Cancelosi,  Press Play  (published by Indiewire)   is one of the oldest high-brow venues for video essays about television, cinema, and other aspects of popular culture.

Tony Zhou, Every Frame a Painting The master of video essays on filmic form, Tony’s arguments are clean, simple, and well-evidenced.  Look to Tony as an example of aggressive and precise editing and arrangement.  He’s also an excellent sound editor–pay attention to his choices and try out some of his sound-mixing techniques in your essay.

Adam Johnston, Your Movie Sucks (YMS) Although an excellent example of epideictic film rhetoric, this channel is a great example of what  not  to do in this assignment (write a movie review, gush about how good/bad you think a movie is, focus on motifs or narrative content instead of  film form  as the center of your argument).  What you  can  learn from Adam is a lot about style.  Adam’s delivery, pacing, and editing all work together to promote a mildly-disinterested-and-therefore-credible ethos through a near-monotone, which I’ll affectionately dub the “Daria” narratorial ethos.

Adam Westbrook, delve.tv Adam Westbrook is part of an emerging group of professional video essayists and delve.tv is his version of a visual podcast.  Using the video essay form, Adam has developed a professional public intellectual ethos for himself through skillful overlay of explanation/interpretation and concept.  Check out Westbrook’s work as a really good example of presenting and representing visual concepts crucial to an argument.  He’s a master at making an argument in the form of storytelling, and he uses the video essay as a vehicle for that enterprise.

:: kogonada (various venues) If you found yourself wondering what the auteur video essay might look like, :: kogonada is it.  I like to call this “expressionist” video essay style.  Kogonada is the ultimate minimalist when it comes to voiceover/text over–its message impossibly and almost excessively efficient.  Half of the videos in his library are simple, expertly-executed supercuts , highlighting how heavily video essays rely on the “supercut” technique to make an argument.  Crafting an essay in this style really limits your audience and may not be a very good fit for the constraints of assignment (very “cutting edge,” as we talked about it in class), but you will probably draw inspiration from ::kogonada’s distinct, recognizable style, as well as an idea of what a video essay can do at the outer limits of its form.

Lewis Bond,  Channel Criswell Narrating in brogue-y Northern English, Bond takes his time, releasing a very carefully-edited, high-production video essay once every couple of months.  He’s a decent editor, but I feel his essays tend to run long, and I feel rushed by his narration at times.  Bond also makes a useful distinction between video essays and analysis/reviews on his channel–and while most of his analysis/reviews focus on film content (what you don’t want to imitate), his video essays stay pretty focused on film technique (what you do).  Hearing the same author consciously engage in two different modes of analysis might help you better understand the distinction between the two, as well.

Jack Nugent,  Now You See It Nugent’s brisk, formal analysis is both insightful and accessible–a good example of what it takes to secure a significant following in the highly-competitive Youtube marketplace.  [That’s my way of slyly calling him commercial.] Nugent is especially good at pairing his narration with his images.  Concentrate and reflect upon his simple pairings as you watch–how does Nugent help you process both sets of information at the pacing he sets?

Evan Puschak, The Nerdwriter Nerdwriter  is a great example the diversity of topics a video essay can be used to craft an argument about.  Every week, Puschak publishes an episode on science, art, and culture.  Look at all the different things Puschak considers visual rhetoric and think about how he’s using the video essay form to make honed, precisely-executed arguments about popular culture.

Dennis Hartwig and John P. Hess,  FilmmakerIQ Hartwig and Hess use video essays to explain filmmaking technique to aspiring filmmakers.  I’ve included the channel here as another example of what  not  to do in your argument, although perhaps some of the technical explanations that Hartwig and Hess have produced might help you as secondary sources.  Your target audience (someone familiar on basic film theory trying to better understand film form) is likely to find the highly technical, prescriptive arguments on FilmIQ boring or alienating. Don’t focus on technical production in your essay (how the film accomplishes a particular visual technique using a camera); rather, focus on how the audience interprets the end result in the film itself; in other words, focus on choices the audience can notice and interpret–how is the audience interpreting the product of production?  How often is the audience thinking about/noticing production in that process?

Kevin B. Lee (various venues) A good example of the older, high-brow generation of video essayists, Kevin’s collection of work hosted on his Vimeo channel offers slow, deliberate, lecture-inspired readings of film techniques and form.  Note the distinct stylistic difference between Kevin’s pacing and someone like Zhou or Lewis.  How does delivery affect reception?

File management

Use your free UTBox account to upload and manage your files.  Make sure you’ve got some sort of system for tracking and assembling everything into your video editing software.   UTBox has a 2 terabyte limit (much higher than Google Drive) and is an excellent file management resource for all sorts of academic work.

Adobe Premiere saves versions with links to your video files, so it’s imperative that you keep your video files folder in the same place on every machine you open it up on.  That’s why I keep all my video files in a big folder on box that I drop on the desktop of any machine I’m working on before I open my premiere files.  The Adobe Premiere project walkthrough  has more details on this.

Where to find video and how to capture it

About fair use . Make sure your composition complies with the Fair Use doctrine and familiarize yourself with the four criteria.

The best place to capture images is always from a high-resolution DVD or video file .  The first place you should go to get the film is the library– see instructions for searching here .

To import the video and audio from your DVD or video file into your video editing software (like Premiere), you will first need to use a software to convert it to an .mkv.  See instructions on how to do that here .

Camtasia tutorials .  Camtasia is a program that allows you to capture anything that’s going on on your screen .  This is a critical tool for this assignment as you decide what kind of interface you want to present to your reader in your video essay.  Camtasia also allows you to capture any high-quality video playing on your desktop without licensing restrictions.

You can also use Clip Converter to capture images and sound from pre-existing YouTube videos , and it may be a little faster and easier than Camtasia.   I suggest converting things into .mkv before putting them into your video editor, regardless of where you get the material from.

What is a video essay ?

Christian Keathley, a Professor of Film & Media Culture at Middlebury College & co-founder of in[Transition], defines video essays as

“short critical essays on a given film or filmmaker, typically read in voice-over by the author and supplemented with carefully chosen and organized film clips”

Video essays have found incresased popularity in recent years on digital content sharing platforms like YouTube & Vimeo. Despite their scholarly-focused and argument-driven nature, video essays have since been associated with (and mistaken for) other popular forms of commentary (e.g. movie commentaries, reaction videos, online fan-edits, etc.) shared on the same platforms. The two do have similarities in their accessibility and utilize the same set of creative tools and texhniques. However, the video essay in its academic form does follow certain conventions (a written critical component from the author, scholarly research, and peer review), as opposed to popular commentaries. 

Video essays as a medium are an important audivisual form of scholarship, particularly in terms of expression, creation, and accessibility. Traditional essays may not always lend themselves to the fullest expression of film and how we interpret/analyze visual images. As students of film and media studies, it is important to both understand the medium from a critical point of view, as well as from a creative point of view.

So you've been assigned a video essay for class, or you want to make one on your own...

Where do you start? Like any other form of traditional essay, you will begin by Developing A Topic , whether it's a persuasive argument, a narrative story, or a research question. If you’re telling a story, think about good elements of narrative. If you’re making an argument in your video essay, think about the elements of making an effective argument. If you're drafting a research question, make sure to be specific and answer the following: who?, what?, where?, when?, why?, and how?

Once you have a well-developed topic and/or research question, then you can Create an Outline and Write a Script for your video essay. Utilizing your background research, evidence from whichever piece(s) of media you are analyzing/discussing, and your own arguments/interpretations of that media, you can build an outline and write a basic script to refer to when filmming and/or recording your video essay. This script will especially be important if you plan to record a voiceover.

Now, you've got your script and you're ready to start gathering materials (scenes, images, audio, etc.) to edit into your video essay.  The best place to capture images is always  from a high-resolution DVD, Blue-ray, or video file. 

There are a couple of different places you can acquire these files. Of course, you can always invest in your own copies of the physical media. This is the best (and most ethical ) way to get high quality images, video, and footage.

Should you wish to do a screen capture, you can use platforms like Camtasia or Clip Converter to record images or footage directly from your screen. These aren't always the most ethical means to record footage, so if you choose to do so, be sure to consult Fair Use Guidelines before doing so. For this process, you will also likely need a DVD Drive, whether external or internal. Having one that can read DVDs and Blu-rays is a plus! Resoruces for how to do these technical processes are included below. 

Before you actually aquire any footage or media for your video essay, it's important to weigh the ethical considerations (i.e. Fair Use & Copyright Law) no matter what the media is or your intention to use it.

Use editing software and experiment with available functionality to enhance and support your argument. Add a voice-over, sound effects, music and other aspects of multimodality. Be sure to include references and credits to all sources used in creating the video essay.

  • What is a Video Essay?

The term Video Essay is hard to define as it is still evolving from a long cinematic history. From the screen studies perspective, it is a video that analyses specific topics or themes relating to film and television and is relevant as it comments on film in its own language. On a basic level it could be defined as the video equivalent of the written essay.

This guide refers to the video essay from the context of the academic audiovisual essay as a multimodal form that combines written, audio and visual modes to communicate an idea. As a structure, the video essay is thesis-driven, and uses images with text so that the audience can read and interpret the idea or argument in a multimodal way.

In educational settings, the term video essay is used broadly for teacher/student-learner generated video and as a vehicle to transmediate between written-text to digital forms.  Through the video essay form, students are able to achieve learning outcomes in a new way as a multimodal experience while engaging with the subject, task or assessment through expression and creation of self-knowledge.

The video essay has become an increasingly popular way of presenting ideas and concepts in the age of the internet and YouTube. In this guide, we present a step-by-step guide on how to write a video essay and tips on how to make it.

While it is easy to write a normal essay, the structure of the video essay is a bit of a mystery, owing to the newness of the term.

However, in this article, we are going to define what is a video essay, how to write a video essay, and also How to present a video essay well in class.

What is a Video Essay?

A video essay is a video that delves into a certain subject, concept, person, or thesis. Video essays are difficult to characterize because they are a relatively new form, yet they are recognized regardless. Simply, video essays are visual compilations that try to persuade, educate, or criticize.

What is a video essay?

These days, there are many creatives making video essays on topics like politics, music, movies, and pop culture.

With these, essays have become increasingly popular in the era of video media such as Youtube, Vimeo, and others.

Video essays, like photo and traditional essays, tell a story or make a point.

The distinction is that video essays provide information through visuals.

When creating a video essay, you can incorporate video, images, text, music, and/or narration to make it dynamic and successful.

When you consider it, many music videos are actually video essays. 

Since making videos for YouTube and other video sites has grown so popular, many professors are now assigning video essays instead of regular essays to their students. So the question is, how do you write a video essay script?

Steps on How to Write a Video Essay Script

Unscripted videos cost time, effort, and are unpleasant to watch. The first thing you should do before making a video writes a script, even if it’s only a few lines long. Don’t be intimidated by the prospect of writing a script. All you need is a starting point.

A video script is important for anyone who wants to film a video with more confidence and clarity. They all contain comparable forms of information, such as who is speaking, what is said, where, and other important details.

While there are no precise criteria that a video essay must follow, it appears that most renowned video essayists are adhering to some steps as the form gets more popular and acknowledged online. 

1. Write a Thesis

Because a video essayist can handle a wide range of themes, video analysis essays lack defined bounds. The majority of essays, on the other hand, begin with a thesis.

A thesis is a statement, claim, theme, or concept that the rest of the essay is built around. A thesis might be broad, including a variety of art forms. Other theses can be quite detailed.

A good essay will almost always have a point to express. Every video analysis essay should have a central idea, or thesis, that ties the film together.

2. Write a Summary

Starting with a brief allows you and your team to document the answers to the most pressing project concerns. It ensures that everyone participating in the video production is on the same page.

This will avoid problems of mixing ideas or getting stuck when you are almost completing the project.

3. Choose a Proper Environment and Appropriate Tools

When it comes to writing your script, use any tool you’re familiar with, such as pen and paper. Also, find a writing atmosphere that is relaxing for you, where you can concentrate and be creative.

Consider what you don’t have to express out loud when you’re writing. Visual elements will be used to communicate a large portion of your content.

4. Use a Template

When you don’t have to reinvent the process every time you sit down, you get speed and consistency.

It’s using your cumulative knowledge of what works and doing it over and over again. Don’t start with a blank page when I sit down to create a script- try to use an already made template. 

5. Be Conversational

You want scripts that use language that is specific and targeted. Always avoid buzzwords, cliches, and generalizations. You want your audience to comprehend you clearly without rolling their eyes.

6. Be Narrative

Make careful to use a strong story structure when you’re trying to explain anything clearly. Ensure your script has a beginning, middle, and end, no matter how short it is. This will provide a familiar path for the viewers of your video script.

7. Edit Your Script

Make each word work for a certain position on the page when you choose your words.

They must serve a purpose.

After you’ve completed your first draft, go over your script and review it.

Then begin editing, reordering, and trimming. Remove as much as possible.

Consider cutting it if it isn’t helping you achieve your goal.

 8. Read Your Script Loudly

Before recording or going on in your process, it’s recommended to read your script aloud at least once. Even if you won’t be the one reading it, this is a good method to ensure that your message is clear. It’s a good idea to be away from people so you may practice in peace.

Words that flow well on paper don’t always flow well when spoken aloud. You might need to make some adjustments based on how tough certain phrases are to pronounce- it’s a lot easier to change it now than when recording.

9. Get Feedback

Sometimes it is very difficult to point out your mistakes in any piece of writing. Therefore, if you want a perfect video essay script, it is advisable to seek feedback from people who are not involved in the project.

Keep in mind that many will try to tear your work apart and make you feel incompetent. However, it can also be an opportunity to make your video better.

The best way to gather feedback is to assemble a group of people and read your script to them. Watch their facial reaction and jot own comments as you read. Make sure not to defend your decisions. Only listen to comments and ask questions to clarify.

After gathering feedback, decide on what points to include in your video essay. Also, you can ask someone else to read it to you so that you can listen to its follow.

A video essay can be a good mode to present all types of essays, especially compare and contrast essays as you can visually contrast the two subjects of your content.

How to make a Good Video from your Essay Script

You can make a good video from your script if you ask yourself the following questions;

MAKE YOUR VIDEO GOOD

  • What is the video’s purpose? What is the purpose of the video in the first place?
  • Who is this video’s intended audience?
  • What is the subject of our video? (The more precise you can be, the better.) 
  • What are the most important points to remember from the video?- What should viewers take away from it?

If the context had multiple characters, present their dialogues well in the essay to bring originality. If there is a need to involve another person, feel free to incorporate them.

How to Present a Video Essay Well in Class

  • Write down keywords or main ideas in a notecard; do not write details- writing main ideas will help you remember your points when presenting. This helps you scan through your notecard for information.
  • Practice- in presentations it is easy to tell who has practiced and who hasn’t. For your video essay to grab your class and professor’s attention, practice is the key. Practice in front of your friends and family asking for feedback and try to improve.
  • Smile at your audience- this is one of the most important points when presenting anything in front of an audience. A smiley face draws the attention of the audience making them smile in return thus giving you confidence.
  • Walk to your seat with a smile- try not to be disappointed even if you are not applauded. Be confident that you have aced your video presentation.

Other video presentations tips include;

  • Making eye contact
  • Have a good posture
  • Do not argue with the audience 
  • Look at everyone around the room, not just one audience or one spot
  • Rember to use your hand and facial expressions to make a point.

It is made of three main elements:

  • Image (filmed footage and found footage)
  • Sound (music and audio)
  • Words (spoken and written)

A video is basically a series of still images- each one is called a frame- that play back at a specific  rate . The frame rate (often abbreviated FPS for "frames per second") differs depending on where you are in the world and what you're shooting on.

If you're shooting a movie on celluloid (actual film that needs to be developed) then you are probably shooting at 24fps.

If you are shooting video in Europe then you are probably shooting at 25fps...

...unless you are shooting sports. Then you're probably shooting at 50fps.

If you're shooting video in the US or Canada then you are probably shooting at 30(29.98)fps...

...unless you're shooting sports. Then you're probably shooting at 60(59.98)fps...

...or unless you're shooting "cinematic video" at a frame rate of 23.976fps.

***The weird numbers for shooting in the US and Canada stem from the fact that while Europe's 50Hz electrical system operates at 50Hz, the 60Hz electrical system of the US actually operates at 59.98 Hz.***

If you're shooting at a higher frame rate (like 120fps or 250fps) it is probably because you want to play it back at one of these frame rates in order to achieve a slow motion effect.

Video sizes are measured in pixels. Resolution   refers to Width x Height. Here are some common resolutions:

  • FullHD (1080p): 1920 x 1080
  • HD (720p): 1280 x 720
  • 4K (2160p): 3840 x 2160
  • 4K Cinema: 4096 x 2160
  • Standard Defintion (NTSC- US/Canada): 720 x 480
  • Standard Definition (PAL- Europe): 720 x 576
  • VGA: 640 x 360

Types of video essays

1. Supercut

A supercut is a compilation of a large number of (short) film clips, focusing on a common characteristic these clips have. That commonality can be anything: a formal or stylistic aspect, a shared theme or subject matter... 

Supercuts are a staple of fandom, but they can also be used as a form of audiovisual critique: to reveal cinematic tropes, to trace thematic or stylistic constants in a filmmaker’s work and so on.

Examples: ROYGBIV: A Pixar Supercut  or Microsoft Sam's  Every Covid-19 Commercial is Exactly the Same  or Chloé Barreau's  NON UNA DI MENO - l'8 MARZO sta arrivando!

2. Voiceover based

In this form, analysis is done by combining clips and images with a narrator’s voice that guides the process. This could be done for a variety of video essays styles: scene breakdowns, shot analyses, structural analyses, vlogs, etc. What is common is the integral role of the creator’s voice in advancing the argument.

Example: Tony Zhou’s Jackie Chan—How to Do Action Comedy or David Chen’s Edgar Wright and the Art of Close-Ups .

3. Text/Image/Sound-Based

In this form, analysis is done by combining text, images and sounds without a narrator’s voice to guide the process. Again, this could be done for a variety of video essays styles, but relies much more on editing to advance the argument.

Example: Kevin B. Lee’s Elements of the Essay Film or Catherine Grant’s All That Pastiche Allows Redux .

4. Desktop Films

A desktop film uses the screen of a computer or gadget to serve as the camera and canvas for all of the content of an audiovisual narrative. It can include content from videos, apps, and programs that would be viewable on a screen. It is a screen-based experience that uses the desktop as its primary medium.

For the last few years, video essays have gained more and more prominence on YouTube . With more and more creators choosing a video essay — or video essay-inspired — format, there are video essays about almost any topic you want to learn more about.

To discuss what makes a video essay one of the best of the year, let’s first break down what a video essay was in the year 2020 . There’s more gray area between formats than it initially may seem, especially given how many videos that lack an essay structure take on an essay aesthetic. We used the following criteria for this list:

  • The video must be scripted. Momentary improvised asides are fine, especially if they come in the form of voice over added in editing, but the video must otherwise follow a written script.
  • The video must have a thesis, and that thesis must be more than “this is good” or “this is bad.” The thesis should concern the impact of the subject matter, not just its content. This means no straight reviews (like La’Ron Readus’s review of Candyman ), no commentary/discussion videos (like Sherliza Moé’s series on cultural appropriation in the Star Wars prequels and Avatar: The Last Airbender ), no lore recaps (like My Name Is Byf’s meticulous archival works of the Destiny 2 lore), and no straight-up histories (like Sarah Z’s retelling of the infamous DashCon).
  • The video also shouldn’t be a documentary (like NoClip’s documentary about the making of Pyre ). The focus should be a subject from an analytical standpoint, not an interview standpoint.
  • But this doesn’t mean the video should necessarily aim for pure objectivity; personal video essays are, in fact, a thing.

This isn’t to say the excluded videos aren’t great. On the contrary: the ones mentioned above absolutely rule. Defining the parameters of a video essay, though, puts the videos discussed here on an equal playing field. When you watch, you know you’ll come away understanding the subject matter, and likely how art and society impact each other, a little better. Almost all of these videos contain spoilers, so watch at your own risk — but most can be enjoyed regardless of your familiarity with the subject matter, too.

1. “In Search of Flat Earth,” Dan Olson (Folding Ideas)

Dan Olson of Folding Ideas has been a video essayist for years, helping solidify the medium on YouTube. “In Search of Flat Earth,” though, is his masterpiece to date. The video is shot beautifully, with loving and reverent shots of nature that not only contribute to the video’s content and concepts, but also capture a sense of still beauty. If the video seeks to claim that flat earthers feel powerlessness in the face of the government and science, the way this video is shot makes the claim that maybe our powerlessness can be good, actually. But “In Search of Flat Earth” isn’t just a response to flat earthers; it’s also a response to Olson’s contemporaries who have made videos trying to convince flat earthers that their ideas are wrong. “In Search of Flat Earth” argues that flat earthers, and people with similar mindsets, can’t be logicked out of their mindsets — which turns into a surprise, mind-blowing third-act twist.

2. “The Satirical Resurgence of Reefer Madness,” Yhara Zayd

Yhara Zayd is somewhat of a newcomer to video essays, posting her first, “The Remake That Couldn’t: Skins U.S. ” in June 2019. Her catalogue of work has boomed in 2020, making selecting a video to feature difficult; her work is consistently standout, mixing analysis with dry comedy and heavy aesthetics. In a landmark year for marijuana legalization, “The Satirical Resurgence of Reefer Madness ” feels especially timely and important, but it’s also just a delight to watch. The video is not just a look into a criminally underrated musical starring Kristen Bell, Alan Cummings, and Ana Gasteyer. It’s a look into the real 1936 propaganda film of the same name, how the laws around marijuana criminalization were formed, and the deeply racist roots of anti-marijuana campaigns. Zayd’s soft but direct voice and distinctly internet-culture-informed humor make the video consistently engaging and fun while never shying away from what makes Reefer Madness so worthy of a campy parody musical.

3. “The Strange Reality of Roller Coaster Tycoon,” Jacob Geller

Roller Coaster Tycoon is a nostalgic classic — but what can it teach us about death? A weird amount, as Geller explains in “The Strange Reality of Roller Coaster Tycoon .” This video opens with the sentence, “There is at least one roller coaster designed specifically to kill you.” The “Euthanasia Coaster,” Geller explains, was never made, but would effectively kill a rider in just about a minute. 4. “ CATS ! And the Weird Mind of TS Eliot,” Maggie Mae Fish

Cats may have come out in 2019, but Maggie Mae Fish’s video essay on it came out in March 2020, so early into what the rest of the year would become. It was a small, but wonderfully unhinged blessing for video essay lovers who needed something bonkers to keep us afloat during quarantine. Fish’s performance background is in comedy and improv, notably working with Cracked before starting on her own video essays. Her writing and performance have a level of effervescent delight and bewilderment at most of the trash media she discusses, coming through most in her discussion of Cats .

But while a video on why Cats was bad could have been engaging and funny, Fish takes a step deeper, looking into the musical’s source material: the poetry of T.S. Eliot, a homophobic, antisemitic weirdo. Fish doesn’t just express Eliot’s politics, but explains why Cats pulls from fascist ideologies in its depiction of a tradition-heavy death cult. Historian Elexius Jionde of Intelexual Media often takes a cultural anthropology lens in her videos, discussing topics like life in the American 1970s and the history of Black homelessness . In “The Anatomy of Stan Culture,” Jionde breaks down a current social phenomenon through a historical lens, asking why we stan and how we got here. Jionde dissects “celebrity worship disorder” and how fans obsess over their favorite celebrities, while not letting people who think they’re too good for the goss off the hook either. Using examples ranging from Bhad Babie to Selena Quintanilla to Victorian actors, Jionde shows how current celebrity culture is rooted in everything from politics to evolutionary biology. This 18-minute video is a crash course in how the celebrity industry runs, and it’s also an analysis of how we interact with celebrity right now.
