100 IELTS Essay Topics for IELTS Writing

Let me start by saying that by far the best resource for authentic IELTS essay topics are the Cambridge 1 – 13 books. These are real past IELTS exam papers and, therefore, provide students with the highest quality questions for all parts of the test. However, what do you do if you have finished the Cambridge books? Or you struggle with one particular type of question and want a lot of that specific type of practise?

Well, until now, people have relied on questions that were “memorised” by test-takers(often incorrectly), or written by well-meaning teachers who have no specific education in test creation. As a result, many of the “IELTS questions” on the Internet are worded incorrectly. And, as a professional exam writer ( yes, I work creating academic exams for universities ), I know how damaging it can be if even one word in a question is changed.

So, today I am sharing my list of 100 IELTS writing topics. Some are taken from old exam papers, a few are from the Cambridge books, but most are from my own course .  More importantly, I can guarantee that each of these questions is as “authentic” as a question can be.  Have fun (and let me know your favourite question in the comments!)

IELTS Discuss Both Views and Give your Own Opinion Writing Topics

• Some people think that illegal Internet downloads are having a negative effect on the music   industry . Others feel that they have little or no impact on artists. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
•   Some people think that exams are a good way of assessing a student’s level . Other people believe that they put unnecessary pressure on young learners and tell us very little about their actual ability.  Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
• Successful sportsmen can earn a great deal more than people in other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
• Some people feel that there should be a fixed punishment for each type of crime . Others feel that the circumstances of an offence should be taken into account when deciding on a punishment. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
• Some people believe that all children should learn a foreign language  from the time they start school, while others believe it is better to wait until a child is at secondary school. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
• Some people believe that in the near future there will be no borders between countries , while others feel that national borders will always remain. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

• Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, prefer to take risks and think that change is a positive thing. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
• Some people think that boys and girls should attend school together . Others feel that they should be educated separately. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.
• Some people feel that  global warming should be dealt with by governments. Others feel that it is the responsibility of individuals in society to solve the problem. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

IELTS Advantages and Disadvantages Essay Topics

• Thanks to low-cost airlines , many people can travel abroad.  What advantages and disadvantages do tourists bring to the countries they visit?
• People today are able to take out loans from the bank or get a credit card very easily. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this practice?
• Many people use the Internet as their main educational resource . What are the advantages and disadvantages of this practice?
• In some countries, teenagers have part-time jobs while they are still at school. What benefits does this bring a child? Are there any drawbacks?

One of the most important things you should do in an IELTS essay is support your argument with relevant examples. But what are good examples for an IELTS essay ? – well, let me give you a clue: they do NOT include fake statistics and they are NOT personal! 

Outweigh Advantages and Disadvantages Essay Topics

• Being a celebrity – such as a film star or singer – brings problems as well as benefits. Do you think that being a celebrity brings more benefits or more problems?
• As a country develops, more people are able to purchase a car . Do you think that the positive for the individual outweigh the negatives for the environment?
• Many museums charge an admission fee  while others are free. Do you think that the advantages of charging admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?
• Today, it is common to see famous sports people advertising sports products . Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
• More and more people are choosing to eat ready-made meals rather than freshly cooked food. Does this trend have more advantages than disadvantages?

Positive or Negative Development IELTS Essay Topics

•   Many parents today employ private tutors   to teach their children after school hours.  Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
• Today, more people are waiting until their thirties to get married and have children .  Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
• In recent years, many small local shops have closed   because customers travel to large shopping centres or malls to do their shopping.  Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
• Countries are becoming more and more similar   because people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world.  Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
• Nowadays  many people communicate using social media .  Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

IELTS Direct Question Writing Topics

• Some students who perform badly at school   go on to have very successful lives as adults. What qualities are needed to do well at school? Are these the same qualities that help people succeed later in life?
• 100 years ago, it was felt that the human race was making progress in all areas of life . Nowadays, there is less certainty that this is the case. In what areas do you think that the most progress has been made so far?  In what area are more things needed to be done?
• Many people believe that globalisation is leading to the culture of individual countries being lost . What can be done to protect a society’s traditional values?
• Children often complain that history lessons are boring because they are about a past that is dead. How can schools bring history alive for pupils?

IELTS Two-Part Question Essay Topics

• More and more people today are moving from the countryside .  Why is this happening?  Do you think it is a positive or a negative development?
• People spend a major part of their adult life at work, and job satisfaction  is an important part of individual well-being. What contributes to a person feeling satisfied at work? How realistic is it for all people to feel satisfied?
• Many people have problems managing money . What skills does a person need to manage their money well? Who should teach children these skills?
• Technology has changed the way that people interact with each other. In what ways has technology changed the types of relationships that people make? Has this been a positive or negative development?
• Children have to be punished  to learn the difference between right and wrong. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What sort of punishments should parents be able to give their children?
• Thanks to developments in technology, many people today have lost basic skills such as how to repair clothes, etc. Why is this happening? Do you think that this is a negative development?

How to write ielts task 2 descriptive essays.

Much like IELTS Writing Task 1 essays , you can organise Task 2 essays into different types. 

In my experience, there are 2 main types of IELTS Writing Task 2 essays. 

• Descriptive Tasks 
• Position Tasks  

These are not official types and it will not say this on your exam paper, but being able to identify which type of essay (and therefore what exactly you need to write) can make an important difference to your score. 

There are 4 parts to the IELTS Writing Task 2 criteria. 

• Task Response
• Coherence and Cohesion
• Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)
• Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Adapting your essay structure and vocabulary to suit a Descriptive or Position task will affect one key part of the criteria: Task Response.

This is because you need to present an ‘appropriate format’ and ‘address all parts of the task’ to earn a good band for your Task 2 essay. Responding to all types of tasks in exactly the same way can negatively affect this score.

What are Descriptive Tasks?

The key difference in Descriptive Tasks is that they do not ask for your opinion . You only need to focus on explanations and examples that are logical and clear to any reader. 

All that is required (“to address all parts of the task” – Band 7.0) is to explain up to two of the following:

• Reasons for / causes of a trend, issue or behaviour  
• Effects of a trend 
• Solutions to a problem / a social issue  
• Advantages / Disadvantages

Again, your position or opinion is not needed, so it won’t interfere with the order of body paragraphs, opinionated language choices, or the types of examples and explanations you choose.

This makes Descriptive Tasks a preferable choice to start practising IELTS Task 2 essays, mostly because they are the simplest tasks to practise two key IELTS Writing skills:

• Creating coherent, fully developed reasons 
• Sharing logical, supportive examples 

It can take longer than you think to get used to the IELTS ‘style’, which is typically 1 reason explained in only 2 to 4 sentences. 

Examples of Descriptive Tasks

Here is a list of examples of IELTS Descriptive Tasks. I have also added the explanations required for the task.  

It is often argued that it is difficult to get children to read. Why do you think this is? What measures could be taken to encourage children to read more? 

• Body Paragraph 1: Reasons for a social issue 
• Body Paragraph 2: Solutions to the problem 

Some young people like to copy the behaviour and clothes of famous people. Why might this be the case? What problems might it cause? 

• Body Paragraph 1: Reasons for a behaviour 
• Body Paragraph 2: Effects of this behaviour  

Plastic bags, plastic bottles and plastic packaging are bad for the environment. What damage does plastic do to the environment? What can be done by governments and individuals to solve this problem?

• Body Paragraph 1: Effects of an issue  
• Body Paragraph 2: Solutions to the problem  

Many working people get little to no exercise either during the working day or in their free time, and have health problems as a result. Why do many working people not get enough exercise? What can be done about this problem? 

There is an increasing trend around the world of married couples deciding not to have children. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for couples who decide to do this.

• Body Paragraph 1: Advantages 
• Body Paragraph 2: Disadvantages  

As you can see, in the above questions, you are never asked to give your own opinion or take a position to support or argue against any of the viewpoints in the task.

If you do share your opinion or position in any part of the essay, you may harm your Task Response score by not presenting an ‘appropriate format’ – (Task Response – Band 5.0).

How to write Descriptive Tasks

Introductions.

The introduction for a Descriptive Task is very straightforward.  There are two sentences you need to write: 

• Introduce the topic : describe the essay topic in your own words  
• Thesis Statement: : outline what two questions you are going to describe and explain in Body Paragraph 1 and Body Paragraph 2 

The first sentence will obviously change depending on the topic, but the Thesis Statement can be extremely similar in many Descriptive Tasks.

For example: 

• Body Paragraph 2: Effects of this behaviour 
• Introduce the topic: “Younger fans of celebrities often try to imitate both the fashion and the behaviour of their favourite idols.”
• Thesis Statement: “ This essay will explore some of the reasons for this tendency, as well as some of the potential issues it can cause.”
• Body Paragraph 1: Effects of an issue 
• Introduce the topic: “The harmful environmental impact of plastic waste is well-known.”
• Thesis Statement: “ This essay will explain the type of harm this material can cause, as well as some possible solutions that both the state and ordinary people can use to help.”
• Body Paragraph 2: Disadvantages  
• Introduce the topic: “Nowadays, more and more couples are deciding against having children.”
• Thesis Statement: “ This essay will explore some of the benefits as well as the drawbacks for married couples who make this decision.”

Remember, your own opinions are not necessary. Compare the two introductions below: 

You try! – Write an introduction to the following Descriptive Task. The two parts of the topic have been identified for you.

• Body Paragraph 2: Solutions to the problem
• Many parents struggle to get their children to read more. This essay will explore some of the reasons for this challenge, as well as some possible solutions they can try to motivate their children to read.
• Getting children to read more is often considered a challenge for many parents. This essay will explore some of the reasons why this can be so tricky, as well as potential ways that can help struggling parents.  

Body Paragraphs

In all IELTS Task 2 essays, you will need to write at least 2 Body Paragraphs. 

One body paragraph should focus on only one of the questions in the task. 

To help the examiner understand which question you are going to address, write a Topic Sentence as the first sentence of the paragraph. 

It is a simple sentence that shows the point which your reasons and examples will ultimately prove. Again, in a Descriptive Task, your opinion is not required and therefore your topic sentence should not contain any opinionated language. 

Here are some examples of topic sentences depending on the questions in your Descriptive Task: 

Look at this list of IELTS Writing Task 2 Descriptive Task example essays. Notice how the first sentence of Body 1 and Body 2 is a topic sentence.

After your topic sentence, your body paragraph should present two or three main reasons that explain one of the questions in the topic.

Here is a table I use to organise and brainstorm reasons for my IELTS Task 2 essays:

You try! – Can you think of two or three reasons to explain the questions in Body 1 and Body 2?

In your full essay, you must explain and support each reason. I recommend choosing your favourite 2 from your brainstorming table. 

Reasons can be explained in a number of ways:

To explain an IELTS Task 2 reason, I always think:

• How do you know this is true?

But also answering the questions in the table above will help you think of supporting information that is logical , clear and coherent.

Conclusions

The conclusion is the final paragraph of your essay. Your conclusion you should only summarise the main reasons presented in Body 1 and Body 2 

Since Descriptive Tasks do not require your position or opinion at any point, this also includes in the conclusion. Likewise, you do not need to add predictions about the future, or any other details.

Why not take one of the Descriptive Task topics from this list and try to write your own descriptive essay? 

If you have just started practising for IELTS Writing Task 2, don’t worry about the 40-minute timer. Take as long as you need to complete your essay. 

Check your work and make sure your opinion is not mentioned anywhere, especially in the conclusion. 

In my experience, once students feel comfortable writing Descriptive Tasks and explaining ideas logically and coherently, it is much easier to add more opinionated phrases in the introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs afterwards.

Writing Task 2 Sample

IELTS Writing Task 2 ( also known as IELTS Essay Writing ) is the second task of your IELTS Writing test. Here, you will be presented with an essay topic and you will be scored based on your ability to respond to the topic.

You need to write at least 250 words and justify your opinion with arguments, discussion, examples, problem outlining, proposing possible solutions and supporting your position. You will have approximately 40 minutes to finish your Essay Writing. IELTS Writing Task 2 carries more weights than Writing Task 1.

Sample Answer

The 21st century is marked by the technological, social, and economic advancement of human civilization. However, around most countries, especially third-world nations, the problem of vagrants is still a concerning issue. There are many suggestions when it comes to the upliftment of the homeless, and one of the most popular of these is financial assistance. Although monetary aid can help the destitute in several ways, it does not improve their condition substantially. In the following paragraphs, I will explore the topic in-depth and justify my views on the same.

The predicament faced by the homeless is much more complex than meets the eye. Most of the people who cannot afford the basic necessities of life are facing such hardships due to generational poverty or lack of proper education and thereby limited employment prospects. Thus, mere financial assistance in the form of cash is insufficient in ameliorating the situation of the underprivileged and unsettled.

Furthermore, due to the transient nature of vagrants, the safety of a lump sum amount is questionable in the hands of such people. There have been many instances where individuals have faced threats and mishaps due to the possession of valuables. Also, in many cases, homeless people end up spending assistance money on harmful and illegal items. Therefore, providing such people with monetary assistance can often put their lives in danger.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that even the slightest degree of assistance can significantly ease the difficulties of the needful. That being said, it is important to find a long-term solution rather than providing short-term support.

In conclusion, the plight of the homeless has been a complication for ages. Thus, to overcome this problem, more sophisticated measures should be taken than giving monetary aid.

2. Discussion Essay

The degree of comfort and convenience enjoyed by students while studying on their personal computers is unmatched. Additionally, with the availability of numerous tools and facilities online, students can now learn in a more sophisticated and substantial manner. Also, students can access their reference material at any point in time without any hindrance when online education is concerned.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that classroom learning has its own advantages. The level of retention is remarkably higher when an individual learns a concept or a subject directly from a teacher in a physical environment. Since students are able to see and hear the lectures by the professor, they are able to understand and analyze the material relatively better.

Finally, the better approach to learning is greatly influenced by personal choice. That being said, with the pace at which technology is progressing, it is safe to say that online learning will be the primary mode of education in the future.

3. Advantage or Disadvantage Essay

For this type of essay, you have to write about the positive and negative aspects of the given topic.

Firstly, rote memorization is one of the simplest ways of committing information to memory. This is a prime reason for this technique being so popular. Since this method allows students to learn a particular topic without understanding the meaning of the concepts, it enables them to prepare for examinations in a time-efficient manner as it takes significantly less time to cover the entire syllabus using this technique.

Au contraire, this method of memorization can have problematic consequences in the future if used far too often. If an individual learns an important topic or subject with the aid of rote learning, they might be unable to apply the knowledge from that subject in real life. As memorization by repetition indirectly obstructs mental development and growth of aptitude, people might find themselves in a plight when a situation arrives where conceptual knowledge is mandatory. Additionally, this method of learning tends to become habitual and thereby hard to change.

In conclusion, I would like to say that rote learning has become a very typical part of the present education system. Nevertheless, we must understand that such an approach does not facilitate proper learning.

4. Problem and Solution Essay

In solution essays, the topic will be a problem and you’ll have to give a solution to the particular issue. Sometimes the question may also be posed as to why this particular issue happened, and you’ll have to present your opinions based on the issue.

At the same time, water bodies are becoming contaminated, and the natural flora and fauna of the earth are also being destroyed for capitalist gains. Also, the overall surge in population puts an enormous strain on the government resources, availability of food and proper sheltering, etc.

In order to tackle the problem of overpopulation, people have to be educated on various aspects and topics that are typically stigmatized in various societies. Indeed, the growth in population cannot be curbed immediately. Thus, to ease the dependence of mankind on fossil fuels, alternative sources of energy must be discovered. If global superpowers and wealthy nations work in unison against the issue of excessive population growth, only then will this predicament be ameliorated.

• Is the essay structure based on the essay topic (E.g.: Education) or essay type (Eg: Opinion essay)?

The essay structure is primarily based on the essay type (e.g., opinion essay, discussion essay, etc.) rather than the essay topic (e.g., education, technology). Each essay type follows a specific format and organization, regardless of the topic discussed.

• What should I do to write an effective essay?

The topics will be based on simple day-to-day life activities like news, sports, environment, traffic etc. Reading English newspapers daily and watching English news will help a great deal in writing a good essay. You can also use practice tests

• I fear giving my opinion on controversial issues? How do I deal with this?

IELTS does not give controversial topics (Generally). But you need not fear to give an opinion. Your language matters and not your choice of opinion.

• Will you be marked for the subject? What if I try to present great ideas with weak grammar?

You are marked for organization of paragraphs, logical flow of thoughts, grammar and collocations. Great ideas with poor grammar will definitely lead to poor scores.

• How will the words be counted in the IELTS exam?

Some examples of how words are counted : 1. Aren’t – This will be counted as one word though it represents two words “Are not”. 2. day-to-day – This will be counted as one word.

Some people think that robots are important for human’s future development. Others think that robots have negative effects on society. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Yes, should be in the same style, keep property values higher, uniformity, conformity, and cohesion –

EG certain villages in prosperous parts of England such as Cheshire, The Cotswolds, and Howarth have extreme rules because the areas have immense cultural heritage. To place a modern MacDonald’s style restaurant in one of these areas would be tantamount to architectural vandalism .

Conc: both are viable and fair, the caveat is that the law should be clear from the beginning and be permanent – changing it would be extremely unfair.

Some people spend a lot of money attending cultural or sports events. Is it a good or a bad thing? Give your opinion and examples from your own experience.

Body paragraph 1

Definitely a good development, gives something for people to aspire to. It also most likely begets higher revenues for the performers and promoters , which should ultimately lead to even more events. This undoubtedly leads to greater monetary and cultural wealth for a society.

Take for example the English Premier League (EPL), this entertainment spectacle has brought considerable wealth into cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, and London. Higher ticket prices lead to better wages for football stars, which leads to more quality players wanting to play in the EPL, leading to a considerable increase in high net-worth individuals residing in these cities.

There has undoubtedly been a positive self-fulfilling cycle of improvement and quality, fuelled by increasing prices. Furthermore, high prices will most likely mean higher tax revenues for the government, this is definitely beneficial for society.

In many countries, small shops and town centers are going out of business because people tend to drive to the large out-of-town stores. This results in an increase in car use, and it also means that people without cars have limited access to out-of-town stores. Nowadays both men and women spend a lot of money on beauty care. This was not so in the past. What may be the root cause of this behaviour? Discuss the reasons and possible results.

Do you think businesses should hire employees who will spend their entire lives working for the company? Explain why you agree or disagree. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Paragraph idea 1: Very bad idea to have lifetime permanence- almost zero incentive to improve, Not fair to employees because the company may pledge allegiance to the company but then the company relocates to Asia. Horrible.

Paragraph idea 2: The employee may become a burden for the company. Employees may become a cost that damages the company, lots of companies suffer because of contractual arrangements made in boom times. British Airways is a perfect example of expensive pension contracts made , only for the entire industry to change and render the contracts a massive headache.

Freedom should be given to employees to “ cherry-pick ” their career destiny.

IELTS essay topics and answer: gender issues (career)

Some people think women should be given equal chances to work and excel in their careers. Others believe that a woman’s role should be limited to taking care of the house and children. Which opinion do you agree with and why? Include specific details and examples to support your choice.

Paragraph idea 1: Women should of course be given equal rights to perform to the best of their ability (good collocation) in the market place Generous provisions and allowances should be made into law to encourage this behaviour and allow females to also fairly take time out from the career ladder to pursue a family.

Paragraph idea 2:  another good reason why I think the first point: Making legal structures to facilitate this transition would not only help to improve the worker’s happiness and wellbeing but also improve the health of society as a whole. Japan has a rather bleak future due to the low fertility rate, perhaps this kind of future could be avoided with more generous legislation.

Conclusion: Definitely should pursue a career and definitely fulfill the traditional family role also. The government should help make both objectives possible.

Conclusion – Pros and cons: I think in the past it was fantastic, nowadays with the environment in such a dire state consumerism needs to be upgraded somehow.

Teenagers are quickly and swiftly becoming screenagers, missing out on physical interactions and games. – Social media has a negative impact on confidence and contributes to cyberbullying… and other trends such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Many doctors say that people in today’s world do not do enough physical exercise. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions are there to this problem?

Cause of not doing enough physical exercise – Joke: no natural predators nowadays, nature would have solved this problem,… in the past wild animals would have eliminated those out of shape…. JOKE – Sedentary lifestyle in the office – Lack of time for sport in a lot of modern lifestyles (40 hours/week + commuting etc)

Topic and answer: society

Weddings are more expensive in many countries nowadays when compared to the past. What is the reason behind this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Paragraph 1 The reason behind this is probably social media Vapid attempts at self-promotion and “keeping up with the joneses”. Now it can be really publicised Ideas here need to be organised a little before starting the essay.

Paragraph 2 Definitely a negative development Although it’s a memorable day and should be cherished – the fact is, large amounts of cash are being spent, Most families have a considerable financial mountain ahead – babies, mortgage, etc

Nowadays consumer goods have become the most important part of people’s lives. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Ideas for body paragraph 1 – Advantage:  Understandable – a car – can be the most important if you need it for work, family, etc Advantages are mobility, freedom, independence…  

Ideas for body paragraph 2 – Disadvantage:  When you fawn over a new product, it has been said the product owns you rather than you owning the product. For example: with an expensive phone, you are constantly worried about the screen smashing, or leaving it on a table, or in a taxi — the worry associated can be stressful. 

Conclusion –  Although it is understandable they are vital components of modern life, it must not be forgotten , that our lives are so much more than consumer durables.

Some people believe that if people are allowed to work after the age of 60, it will cause some problems. Do you agree or disagree? Ideas for body paragraph 1

– Yes:  lots of problems, – Sight, attention, technology gap, especially machinery… blue-collar work… – In some countries, senior citizens are required by law to retake their driving exam….

– Disagree: The elderly can be better qualified at the job, have more life experience, more insight, and more wisdom… – Pension burden if not allowed to work after 60. For example: most Western countries have a serious demographic deficit of an aging workforce . A country simply cannot prosper if all its wealth goes towards a pension.

Conclusion – For some sectors, it should be illegal, or at least the worker should be medically tested, but for other jobs, especially white-collar work, it should be okay.

Most people doing IELTS Writing Task 2 get stressed out about which IELTS essay topics they will face. They worry about getting an unfamiliar topic and not having any good ideas or enough vocabulary to complete the task.

This article will help you by giving you the most common IELTS essay topics  and showing you how to use these to get higher scores.

Why is it important to know the IELTS essay topics?

If you are familiar with the most common topics you will have a huge advantage because you will be better at two of the most important things:

• Thinking of relevant ideas

Idea Generation

Of all the things people worry about when doing Task 2 , not having enough ideas to complete the essay is normally top of the list. However, you should remember that IELTS is not a test of your knowledge, it is a test of your English. The examiners do not expect you to be an expert on the essay topic, they just want you to show that you can write clearly and persuasively in English.

You should also realise that IELTS is a global exam and when the writers of the exam are making the questions, their main concern is writing questions that can be understood by nearly everyone in the world. For example, common IELTS essay topics are education, crime and health. Everyone in the world has an opinion on these everyday topics and you need to understand that the examiners are not looking for the ‘best’ ideas, they are just looking for relevant ideas.

Let’s look at an example question on the topic of international aid:

Rich countries should help poorer countries when they suffer natural disasters. Do you agree?

You don’t have to think of the ‘best’ ideas, you just have to think of two ideas that are relevant to this question. Reasons why rich countries should help are:

• It is the morally correct thing to do.
• They have legal obligations under international law.
• Not helping will result in many deaths and suffering.
• They have more than enough money to do this.
• It is in their interests to do so for the peace and security of the world.
• Some of their own people might be involved in the disaster.
• Every rich country has a fund for disaster relief within their budget.
• They might suffer a disaster one day too and need help from the international community.

You obviously do not need to think of this many ideas and some of the ideas are better than others, but the point I am trying to make is that there are lots of ‘relevant’ ideas you could think of.

Despite this, you will obviously be more confident and be able to think of ideas more quickly if you are familiar with the common topics. Below I will show you how you can use the common IELTS essay topics to learn about the general topics and improve your English at the same time.

25% of your marks come from vocabulary and this is directly linked to IELTS essay topics. One of the main ways the examiner will judge your vocabulary is something called ‘topic-specific vocabulary’. The idea is that someone with a wide-ranging vocabulary should be able to talk about any of the common essay topics easily using words that are specific to that topic.

For example, if the question was the same as above, you would be expected to use words like ‘international aid’, ‘wealthy’, ‘developed’, ‘developing’, ‘earthquake’, ‘hurricane’, ‘relief fund’, ‘obligation’, ‘moral’ etc. These are words that you use specifically to talk about the essay topic. You don’t have to use these words, but they would help.

Therefore, the more familiar you are with the topic, the more ‘topic-specific’ vocabulary you will know and the higher your score will be. Knowing the most common IELTS essay topics allows you to focus on the most important vocabulary . Below I will show you the most common topics and some of the more important words you should know.

Are IELTS essay topics predictable?

Yes and no. You will obviously not be able to predict the exact topic that will come up. There are just too many to do this and it would be a very easy test if you knew what the exact topic was going to be.

However, there are between 10 common topics that come up more than others. You should focus on these first, especially if you don’t have much time before the test.

How can I use the most common topics?

There are two main ways you can use the most common IELTS essay topics to your advantage. The first is to familiarise yourself with them while practising and improving your English and the second is to focus on topic-specific vocabulary.

Common Topic Familiarisation

If you are going to do well in the IELTS test you need to be using and exposing yourself to English every day. You should be reading, listening, writing and speaking in English as much as possible. You should make sure that if you are listening to or reading something in English you do it within the common topics. For example, you could listen to a podcast on technology one day and then read a newspaper report about education or health the next day. Most of the questions are on current topics, therefore staying up to date with what is happening in the world will really help you think of ideas.

For example, three of the biggest news stories of 2015 were the refugee crisis, terrorism and internet privacy issues. These topics have, unsurprisingly, already appeared on the IELTS writing paper this year.

If you really want to get advanced, you could also try making up your own questions based on the news of the day and then give these questions to a study partner. This is something that I do with my classes. They go to a popular news site like the BBC and write a Task 2 question based on one of the stories they were reading about and then they give it to a classmate who does the essay for homework.

Vocabulary – Notebook

There are two things you can do here: start a vocabulary notebook and focus on key topic-specific vocabulary.

As mentioned above, you should be listening to and reading English as much as possible before your test. This will not only improve your listening and reading skills but will, more importantly, expand your vocabulary.

When you are reading or listening you will always notice words that you don’t know. Most students simply look these up immediately in the dictionary and then forget about them. I think this is a total waste of time because the words do not stay in your head and you never use them again. A much better thing to do is to start a vocabulary notebook. This is the single most effective way to improve your vocabulary. Follow the steps below:

• Buy a notebook that you will only use for vocabulary.
• When you see or hear a new word try to guess the meaning from the context of the sentence or paragraph. This step is very important because it is an essential skill to develop and will help you remember the words.
• Check the meaning after you have guessed it in the dictionary.
• Note the new word and the definition in your vocabulary notebook.
• Pronunciation
• Review the list of words and test yourself on these words after one week, two weeks, one month and two months. Soon you will have expanded your vocabulary dramatically.

You can also do this by using apps like Memrise  to record and review vocabulary.

Vocabulary- Topic Specific Words

As mentioned above, one of the ways in which the examiner judges your vocabulary is how many topic-specific words you use. Learning these words before the exam for the most common essay topics should help you get a higher vocabulary score.

However, one of the worst things you could do is simply learn a list of words and insert them into your essay. This is not how good vocabulary works and the examiners are trained to spot this. Your focus should always be on accuracy i.e. using words correctly. Because of this I advise my students to use the 100% rule.

You should never use any word or phrase in IELTS essays if you are not 100% sure about it. By 100% I mean that you are sure about its:

• Collocations

If you are not 100% sure about the things above, then do not use it. If you do, you will probably get it wrong and this will lower your band score.

In these type of questions, instead of discussing the causes of a problem, you need to discuss the problems related to a particular issue in society, and then suggest what can be to solve these problems:

In these type of questions you are asked to discuss the positive and negative sides of a particular topic. You will usually be asked this in the context of giving an opinion ( e.g. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Is it a positive or negative development? ):

Out of context, I’d have to say one is a verb (action), and the other is gerund noun (idea). Is this what you had in mind?

What I mean is :Is there any difference in meaning between infinite and gerund with (like), (love),(hate),(start),…? For example :I love to ear pizza I love eating pizza

well, then my explanation still applies. I love to eat = I love to do this action. I love eating = I love this activity. In terms of your listener, they will get the same idea essentially.

Hello Adam! Thank you very much for your lessons! Could you please tell are there any differences between Academic and General Writing Task 2 requirements? For instance, according to the majority of the books(for Academic module) it is said that in agree\disagree types test taker should give opinion in introduction (agree od disagree with the statement) and in body paragraphs give reasons to support it and make a concession. But in General, as far as I know, you should not make concession.

It’s not that you shouldn’t give a concession; it’s that you don’t need to because they expect less for the general test. If you can do it well, by all means go for it. The general test is mostly for immigration purposes, so they want to see you can go to the new country and communicate well enough.

Both are correct. the meanings are different. The first is a real situation in the past. The second is a hypothetical future. In both cases you just found out that it wasn’t /isn’t him.

I have one doubt about the introduction part of the essay. You said in your video about paragraph , that we have to identify the topic and the question in specific that is asked . but i came across a question wherein i found myself short of information to start of for the introduction . The planning part of the essay was difficult for me . what do u suggest i do to get a better understanding about the topic so that i dont waste my time planning for the introduction in my essay .

The question will always make it clear what the general topic is and then you have to look for the specific question. As far as planning, you are not planning the intro, you are planning the essay as a whole.

If all else is very good, you might still get 17 or 18, but not higher because technically you ddn’t complete the task.

hello, i wanted to ask if there’s an informal writing mistakes that someone can do during the writing test, and if i can use lists (ordered or unordered) and if i can write abbreviations such as (ETC…) also if i can use keyboard signs such as brackets.

Avoid slang, contractions (it’s should be it is), and abbreviations. Also, no lists, just paragraphs and sentences.

it is a bit difficult for me to tell the difference between the two main types. I think they are, to some extend, the same. Because whether you should give your opinion or not, you need to give your reasons. So above this, could I consider that what makes them apart is only you should provide your own idea. In Task 1, you are assigned a graph, visual information, table or chart, which you are required to describe in your own words. You must write a report in 150 words, accurately describing what the information in the graph or picture represents. Writing Task 2

 IELTS writing task 2 marking criteria has a 66% weightage, where you must complete a 250-word essay in 40 minutes. Although helping those less fortunate than ourselves cannot buy us happiness directly, it can certainly bring us a sense of satisfaction and purpose in life.

Are you taking an IELTS exam soon? Feeling nervous about the writing paper? Read this article for some top tips and useful language to help you with Part 1 of the writing paper.

Exam Requirements

Both the Academic and General English writing papers require you to write two texts in 60 minutes .

In the Academic Paper, you base your answer to Part 1 on an infographic , such as a chart or table, and use language to summarise and report on key information like the similarities and differences in data.

You should write at least 150 words in this part. While there’s no word limit, try to complete Part 1 in 20 minutes .

Part 2 requires you to write at least 250 words , so you’ll need to allow a little extra time for this.

Three tips to get a great mark in Part 1

1. read the question carefully.

Underline the key points and look at what the question is asking you to do:

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant .

To get a great score, you need to do all these things, so remember to read the introduction to the infographic as well and make sure you understand what the data shows.

Before you start writing, think about the main point for each of your paragraphs. Look at the outline below with some useful phrases and linkers because a well-structured text, which uses a range of language, will impress the examiner .

3. Use a variety of language

To get top marks, you need to show a range of grammar and vocabulary which is appropriate for the task. Look at the table later in the article to see some examples of language you usually find in reports and practise using it when you’re writing from now on.

Structuring your answer

In the first paragraph, you should briefly explain what is happening in the infographic. You can get this information from the introduction to the task, but remember to paraphrase what it says:

In the second paragraph, identify the main trend in the infographic and any similarities in the data:

In the third paragraph, explain the differences:

Finally, give a clear conclusion:

Useful language

You need to use a variety of words and phrases to analyse the data. A lot of this language is quite specific to talking about numbers, so might be new for you. Look for any words you don’t know in your dictionary.

Remember to use appropriate adjectives or adverbs to describe differences, using synonyms of big and small . Keep a list of useful chunks of language so you use the correct collocations , e.g. you can say a sharp increase but not a sharp majority .

Describing a process

You may also be asked to write a report describing a process in this part of the test. You are given a picture and some key points which you then need to write into a report.

The structure for this text is different because it has fewer paragraphs and you don’t need to include a conclusion. You still describe the main idea of the infographic in the first paragraph, again paraphrasing the information given:

A few final reminders

Look at the dates for the data in the infographic – is it only talking about the past? About current trends? Or providing predictions for the future? This will affect the tense you use in your report.

• Use a variety of active and passive structures in your report.
• Remember, it’s a formal text so don’t use contractions .
• Leave yourself enough time to check your work at the end.

Collocation (n): words which go together, e.g. the vast majority, a tiny percentage.

Contraction (n): linking two words with an apostrophe, e.g. it’s, don’t, they’d.

Working on academic papers is a must, no matter how intensely students hate this task. Descriptive writing could be interesting, but for reaching success here, it is essential to find good descriptive essay topics. A lot of things depend on creativity and imagination, but your personal interest is even more important. We’re going to help you find a topic that will suit your tastes, but first, let’s figure out  what is a descriptive essay ? These assignments are a piece of writing focused on re-creating a specific experience, place, person, or event: a writer’s goal is to present it in a detailed and clear way. So, each student must pick a subject and describe it, building a vivid picture of it in the minds of their audience.

Descriptive writing prompts are important because they help you sharpen your memory, analyze your thoughts and reactions, and train your writing as well as expand your vocabulary.  They are also exciting, but of course, this factor relies on which topic you select. Strategies for Choosing Great Descriptive Essay Ideas

Many students underestimate the importance of topics. They are happy to grab the first one they see, and then they face hours or even days of boring research and inefficient drafts, ending up with a mediocre paper a professor cannot evaluate highly. This is a big mistake, so if you’d like to avoid such unfortunate results, keep tips below in mind.

• Go for personal focus. Never choose descriptive essay prompts that you don’t care about. They should be personally interesting for you — this is the only way to make sure that your paper is pleasing to everyone related to it. Writers can do a good job only if they enjoy what they’re doing (unless they are already experienced enough, but it’s a rarity among students). So, look into your memory. Think about something you’d like to describe: it could be a trip somewhere, a favorite place, or even a beloved person.
• Consider the volume. It is vital to base a topic on the word count you’ll have to cover and the amount of details available to you. Let’s look at these examples: you decided to write about an instance where you met your favorite actor. The problem is, you saw him briefly and nothing truly of note happened, so you could come up with several descriptive paragraph topics, but it won’t be enough for a 5-page essay. You’d have to choose another theme in this case. Equally, if you have a large idea that could make for 10 pages while the task requires you to write only 1, this isn’t the best decision. So never forget about word count and adjust volume of your ideas accordingly.
• Adjust topic based on vocabulary. If you study at college, you likely have an average vocabulary fitting the academic sphere. In case you study at university, your word supply is more complex, so you could afford to look at more creative descriptive topics. High school students have less diverse vocabulary, so evaluate your skills objectively. This factor affects the choice you will make, so if you plan to describe a fight you witnessed, you should assess whether you know enough words and expressions for it.
• Look for supporting sources. They are not always necessary, but they’ll definitely be a plus. If you choose a more scientific kind of work, you should support your opinions and impressions with other people’s words. Look for such sources, but be sure they are credible. Focus on articles and books, not on blogs and general sites.

The idea of having a dream house someday fills me with excitement. It will be one place that will be solely mine– a place I can rest, unwind and call my own. 

When I think of where this dream house would be situated, I can only envision the cold and peaceful mountains. I have been to hills and mountains during many treks. It's one place that offers me the most joy. The happiness of walking on the side of the curvy, narrow roads and stopping at a small food stall to have a hot cup of tea and noodles makes me feel alive. Life feels simpler there. 

My dream house would ideally be small. I don't have the desire to live in a gigantic mansion with all the worldly and materialistic amenities. Although it would be small, it would have hundreds of plants– both inside and outside. My kitchen will be my happy place, where I will always keep everything stocked. The balcony will have a little hammock where I could read a book and get lost in the fictional world.

I would love to have this dream house as soon as possible, maybe in the next year or two. It's only about attaining financial stability and a job I love, and then I can move to my house in the mountains!

The day I move would perhaps be the happiest day of my life. This house will be perfect for me because I have thought of every aspect of it, in incredible detail, over and over. It'll be a house made of love and tranquillity, with a house cat running around to give me company!

In conclusion, my dream house, a harmonious blend of comfort, aesthetic appeal, and functionality, represents more than just a physical structure; it's a sanctuary that echoes my personality, values, and aspirations. Envisioned as a place of tranquility, inspiration, and warmth, it serves as a haven where memories are made and cherished. From its eco-friendly design to the cozy, inviting spaces, each element of this house contributes to an atmosphere of peace and happiness. In describing my dream house for this IELTS Cue Card, I not only share a personal vision but also articulate a future aspiration, showcasing my ability to communicate complex ideas and emotions effectively in English. This dream house symbolizes the culmination of my goals and efforts, a place where I can thrive, grow, and find solace.

Ever since I was young, I always thought that growing up would be so exciting. For one, it would involve having a house of my own, my dream house. A place that is just mine, where I can host the people I love and always be authentically myself. 

My dream house will be a beach house. So, every morning, I would first pull the curtains away from the life-size windows and watch the waves hitting the shore. I imagine the noise of crashing waves to be rhythmic and peaceful. Moreover, the idea of sitting on the porch while the salty winds rush through the tangles of my hair sounds beautiful to me.  

The house would ideally be big enough for me, my parents and my friends if they ever want to stay. I want to be the person whose house is always open for loved ones to stay over. It would have an all-blue theme to match the seaside atmosphere. I also envision a lot of artwork hanging on the walls of my house.

I think no other place would come close to being perfect for me than this one. I am a water baby, and I love the feel of sand under my feet. Moreover, I will personalize this space to match my taste and comfort. I will also add a library room.

If it were up to me, I would want to buy my dream house today. That said, it's not financially possible, so I will strive to work hard and gain stability in my life to have it one day.
