Are you using the wrong font for your worship services? What makes a good font for ProPresenter?

Top 7 Fonts for Worship in 2022

The font you use to display lyrics is a big deal. Often churches will stick with the default font in ProPresenter and not think a thing about it. However, choosing the perfect font can either complement or distract from your worship service.

There are a few qualifications a font must meet to be a good choice to display your lyrics with.

The first and most important qualification is legibility. A big problem with many serf fonts is that, while decorative, they can be challenging to read at a distance.

type, typography, close up, bokeh, fonts, font, letters, lettering, typeface, blur, adobe, minion, serif,

The second qualification is how well it looks in your space and what fits the look and feel of your worship space. This is where the font wars begin.

Rather than suggest a specific font, we asked churches what fonts they use for worship.

It turns out many of them look very similar.

Futura Bold

best font for church presentation

Futura is a font known by all type nerds because of its clean and modern appeal. Futura isn't new, though. Futura was first released in 1927 by Paul Renner, survived the Nazis, and even made it to the moon.

Futura is a favorite among projectionists for bringing a classic yet clean look that feels familiar and fresh.

Bebas Neue is one of the most unique font selections in this collection. A feature of this font is that it is rather skinny and tall, allowing you to either fit more words on your screen or provide a wider margin to highlight your visuals.

VMC Worship Bold

best font for church presentation

VMC Worship Bold is the only font I'm aware of that has been designed from scratch, specifically for displaying lyrics in church. There are other worship fonts out there, but I'm unaware of any other fonts created from the ground up.

I like VMC Worship Bold because it is somewhere between Futura and Montserrat and borrows some of the best characteristics of both.

Montserrat is the only font that shares a name with a British territory in the Caribbean on our list. The font Montserrat is a popular Google font created by Julieta Ulanovsky that started as a Kickstarter project.

Okay, this one is a joke. But ask any group of graphic designers or projectionists what their favorite font is, and Papyrus is sure to come up. Papyrus, exceeded only by Comic Sans, is one of the world's most made fun of fonts and shouldn't be used unless you're trying to be funny. 😏

best font for church presentation

Urbane is one of my latest favorites. Especially in other weights, Urbane brings a clean urban look without being a distraction. I could see Urbane being used in some sort of creative layout that emphasized the medium or demi bold weights.

When designing slides, it can be tricky to find a balance between expressing creativity and avoiding distractions. Here Is a compilation of our favorite tips for putting together good lyric slides in Presenter !

Choosing a Font

A good font is one of the key ingredients of a good lyric slide. You want a font that is clean and classic rather than too creative or distracting for the people reading along. We recommend going for Sans Serif fonts such as Tahoma, Gill Sans, or Open Sans. You can also check out CMG Sans, a free font from Church Motion Graphics specifically designed for church lyric slides.

The color of your text should always contrast with the selected background. You may also want to consider adding a subtle shadow or outline around the text to make it pop out more. In the image below, see how the shading around the letters creates more contrast against the grey motion background.

In Presenter, you can easily add a shadow and/or outline to your text. Simply go to your lyrics template editor and adjust these settings to your liking. You can also play around with the "Advanced" settings to adjust things like the spacing between your letters and lines.

best font for church presentation

Lines per Slide

Two lines per slide is a good standard to aim for, although, you may also have slides with one line or three lines depending on the song. Song section breaks typically occur every four lines (ex. choruses are usually about four or eight lines long), which is why many churches like the four-line format. However, having fewer words on each slide improves the audience's reading experience. Your slides person will have more slides to click through, though!

Lastly, make sure your font design choices are consistent throughout your slides.

Selecting a Background

When choosing a background, avoid options that are distracting or busy. You also want to select an option that fits the overall mood of the song.

By default, Presenter sets a black background to your slides. White text on a dark background, as opposed to dark text on a lighter background, makes for the most optimal viewing experience as it creates less light pollution and is softer on the eyes.

If you're looking for some variety, you can upload your own images to your Media Library. Again, just make sure that your text stands out against your chosen background.

best font for church presentation

Motion Backgrounds

With motion graphics, lean towards options with subtle movements and ones where the motion is seamless when looped - you don't want a noticeable break when the graphic loops back to the beginning.

WorshipTools provides three different tiers - Free, Pro, and Pro Plus. With the Free and Pro accounts, you get access to a free motion graphic and slide template each month. With a Pro Plus account, you have unlimited access to all the graphics and templates in our library. You can also find other options from the Internet to upload to your Media.

Your Church Font Matters More Than You Know: 7 Best Practices for Church Fonts

Craft a cutting-edge church brand by implementing these 7 critical font principles.

best font for church presentation

Controversial opinion:

Your church fonts are the most important decision in your church design.

Hear me out.

If you have an amazing church logo, but you use Comic Sans, your church will look unprofessional.

That’s why most churches outsize their church name in their design.

There is a branding reason for this. When people talk about your church, they don’t say, “Have you heard of [cool logo] church?” No. They say, “Have you heard of Holy Trinity on 146th?” People see your name. People remember your name.

And when people remember your name, they remember it in the font in which you choose to display it.

Try this experiment:

I’m going to say a brand name, and I want you to be honest about what comes to mind first.

All of these names are visualized as fonts .

Your church is no different.

In fact, that fonts you choose for your church website work the exact same way on a more subliminal level.

The fonts you use on your website should not only directly correspond to your church logo font choice, but you should also strategically choose the right fonts. Thankfully, there are rules and best practices to help guide you to make the best decision for your church so that your website visitors are more like to visit and to engage.

Here are seven tips to choose the right fonts to create an unforgettable church logo and website.

1. Stick to a main headline font and a main body copy font

In other words, don't use a bunch of different fonts.

Choose a primary font that you use for all of you main headlines, and choose another primary font that you use for all of your paragraph font.

When you add third and fourth fonts, your website will begin to look unsightly. It will seem “off” to the people reading it.

This even applies to pictures of font , which is why the font you use in your church signage should look as close as possible to the font on your website. In short, when you show pictures of your church on your website, it will look uniform with your site, and the pictures will be more pleasant to view for your website visitors.

2. Connect your fonts to the "brand" of your church

What is the culture of your church? What feeling do you want people to have when they see your font?

Do you want your church website font to be sophisticated? Playful? Modern? Whatever font you choose will communicate something about the feeling of your church.

There is a difference between a serif font and a sans serif font. A serif font will have little lines hanging off the edges of each letter, and a sans serif font will have clean, single lines that are more simple.

Serif fonts tend to communicate something more intellectual. Sans serif fonts tend to communicate straightforwardness.

Thick font often communicates an emphasis and importance. Thinner fonts communicate elegance, modernity, and sophistication.

3. Use Google Fonts

If you don’t have the budget to purchase a fully licensed premium font for your church website, you can use Google Fonts (most web providers supply access to Google Fonts), which gives you access to almost 1,000 free fonts, which include web-optimized fonts.

4. Don’t use a font-constrained platform

Use a website platform that enables you to easily choose from a variety of great fonts so you don't have to embed them, install them, or manually code them into your website.

Tithe.ly Sites comes built-in with a curated list of great Google Fonts, and we are always adding more great options.

5. Make sure your font is readable in both big and small contexts

This is one of the biggest mistakes churches make when choosing a font. They choose font configurations that aren’t readable in every format.

If your church font is too thin, it might not work on smaller printables like business cards.

If your font is too big, it might look too bulky and overbearing on a 100” projector screen during the service.

Make sure to test your font in a variety of venues—big and small, digital and print—to ensure that your font isn’t unreadable in important formats.

6. Use complementary font weights

Most fonts have multiple weights that range from very thin to very bold —premium fonts sometimes have up to 10-12 levels.

Ideally, across all your designs, you should pick two fonts that are no more than 200 points away from each other—in other words, two levels of thickness apart .

Here’s another way to put it:

Don’t choose the boldest font for your headline and the thinnest font for your paragraph font, or vice versa.

7. Consult a designer to help you pick an appropriate font

Choosing the right font is a big decision.

It is very worth your time to find a designer in your church—or a local designer with whom you can consult—to help you pick the right fonts.

Since this is a one-time consultation, this shouldn’t be too expensive. But the return on investment for your church could last for years .

It’s very worth investing a couple hundred dollars to get a professional designer to help guide you through a process that will have a lasting impact on the way visitors and members alike will experience your church.

Whatever church font you choose, if it’s part of your church logo or any print assets, you may be stuck with it for a while.

Make sure to invest the appropriate amount of time and consideration into this decision.

It sounds like a small and insignificant decision, but your font is likely the first thing every new visitor will notice when they hear about, see, or read about your church.

Best Practices for Fonts in Church Media

One of the most important, most vexing, and most abused areas of PowerPoint design has to do with fonts. Whoever invented fonts anyway? Wouldn’t it be so much simpler if there were just one font choice? Sure it would, but it would also make the world an incredible boring place. Creative fonts are good, but they need to be used with care. What is needed are a few rules, guidelines, or suggestions. As a professional PowerPoint designer. Josh has been working with fonts for years. He’s eminently qualified to answer your questions about fonts. So, let’s get some things figured out about best practices for fonts in church media.

How do you decide what font to use with a particular design, style, season, mood, topic? Is it just a matter of whatever tickles your fancy, or are there some helpful guidelines that you can provide? Every designer has their favorite fonts. I have around a dozen serif fonts, six sans-serif fonts, and a handful of scripts on my stand-by list. If I only had access to these fonts, I could produce compelling design layouts in a wide range of styles. I deviate from these favorites often, but it is great to have a quiver-full of reliable choices when delving into a new design.

(For the record, my list is as follows:

Serif fonts

  • Copperplate
  • Helvetica Neue
  • Century Gothic
  • Avant Garde

Script fonts

Simple fonts or ornate fonts? Which do I use? I think visual interest is important, even with fonts, but so is readability. Fonts with even the simplest of appearances are incredibly complex. Think about it: each font contains scores of characters, all carefully designed and masterfully constructed. We may think of Arial or Times as humdrum, but there is a reason they are loaded onto nearly every computer in the USA (and in many countries around the world): they are perfectly crafted font faces that combine subtle elegance and superior readability.

I generally favor simpler font faces to ornate choices because readability is always paramount. That said, there are times when an ornate font fits the bill. The key is making active choices. Ornate fonts can be a default choice and a lazy substitute for actual design work. Instead, choose your fonts deliberately, noting the aesthetic and emotional benefit to the work you are creating.

How many different kinds of fonts can I use in a single piece of media, such as a bulletin or a PowerPoint? The keys to font choice are 1) coherence and 2) consistency. Within a piece (or series of pieces) titles should be set in one font face. The same is true for paragraphs (or body copy). Subheads should be consistent with each other, captions should be consistent with each other, italics should be consistent with each other…

As a general rule, two complimentary font families work well in a single piece, three can work if applied carefully, and four will almost always appear scattered and incoherent.

Are there different types of font files? There are many different formats of font files. Sparing the dissertation, there are three basic formats that appear most often: PostScript (ts) TrueType (ttf), and OpenType (otf).

  • PostScript fonts were (and in some ways still are) the industry standard for producing camera-ready artwork for professional printing. The problem with PostScript font is they are not compatible with all computers. If you design on a PC and a Mac-based designer sends you a font file that will not load, there is a good chance that font was delivered in PostScript format.
  • Apple developed TrueType fonts to compete with are compatible with nearly all machines. Certain professional presses once had difficulty producing printed works with TrueType fonts, since their machinery was programmed to understand the PostScript language. Since, this problem has all but disappeared. Many free fonts for consumer use come in this format because they are widely compatible. Generally, TrueType fonts are stable files, though TrueType bootlegs of famous fonts abound. These imitations often lack the kerning tables and glyph selection found in the original versions of the fonts.
  • OpenType is a relatively new font format that is compatible with Mac and PC, widely accepted by professional presses, and often includes great features like kerning tables, discretionary glyphs, and more. If given the choice, I always prefer to purchase fonts in the OpenType format because the files are the most versatile.

If you could give your top two or three cardinal rules about fonts, what would they be?

  • Never, ever, ever use Papyrus or Comic Sans in your designs (unless you want your designs to appear amateur).
  • Kerning (the space between the letters) is as important as the letters themselves. Always look at the negative space between your letters, especially in instances of large type, and adjust accordingly. Always trust your eye; never trust a default kerning table.
  • Ornate fonts are for headers and large type areas only. Choose simple serif or sans-serif fonts for body copy. Always value readability.

Are there any PowerPoint-specific font tips that you could give us? White space is far more important in a printed work than it is on-screen. When designing for screen, set your type larger than your instincts tell you. It is always good to test your typesetting by projecting it onto the big screen. This will reveal much about your design that your desktop monitor never could.

7 Best Practices for Church Presentations

I recently received this question about church presentations:

Hey John, our staff is looking at improving the style, content, and format of our church presentations during the weekly sermon on Sundays. Do you have any guidance on church presentation best practices?

So, I answered this question on a private coaching call for digital communicators and then thought, there are probably other people wondering the same thing, so I decided to create this blog post.

If your church doesn’t utilize IMAG (image magnification in large venues to enable audience members seated at a distance to see what’s happening on stage) in your church worship services because it’s a small church or you don’t have the capabilities to do so well, then using church presentations and graphics can really enhance your church service.

The 7 Best Practices for Church Presentations

Let’s look at 7 best practices leading churches use for designing church presentation slides for use in worship services.

best font for church presentation

1. Have Variations of the Series or Sermon Graphic

Create several version of a series graphic so you can utilize it in a variety of ways and have flexibility when building your church presentation. I always recommend creating 3 versions for use in the service:

  • Title Slide with the series name and graphic in front (not meant to overlay content on)
  • Sermon Slide that has a more muted background and the name of the sermon/series in the corner for overlaying scripture and main points.
  • Background Slide for overlaying other content (photos, lyrics and other content)

In addition, you might also want to create some additional variations for digital use on your website and social media.

If you’re looking for free sermon series graphics and media, check out Open Resources.

2. Format Scripture Slides for Easy Reading

When it comes to Scripture slides you want to format them for easy reading and high impact. Take a look at the screenshot from North Point above and the simplicity of their scripture slides and formatting. With this in mind, here are a few good rules to follow for Scripture slides:

  • Use simple san-serif fonts. Semi-bold or bold fonts unless you have large HD screens. Some of our favorites are: Helvetica, Proxima Nova, and Myriad Pro. Font size will vary depending on the size of your screen and the distance of your viewers. See #4 in this list for guidance.
  • Make sure there is good contrast with the slide background.
  • Include the verse reference on each slide (at the end). Remove verse numbers within the text to make for easier reading.
  • Use the 7×4 rule for the number of words on a slide. 7 words per line max, 4 lines per slide max. Generally 25 words per slide max. The example above from NorthPoint uses a 7×5 framework plus the Scripture reference and only contains 26 words. Most of their slides contain much less words.
  • Keep the formatting simple and consistent. Minimize punctuation and the number of colors. Keep the alignment consistent from slide to slide.

3. Utilize Templates In Your Church Presentation Software

Utilizing templates in your church presentation software is the fastest way to achieve a cohesive look. Our favorite church presentation software is ProPresenter running on a Mac, but even if you’re using Easy Worship, MediaShout or some other presentation software, you should be able to save templates.

Templates ensure that your slides are using the same font, font size, formatting, placement, alignment and background. You can have different templates for different types of content. One for sermon points, one for scripture slides, one for quotes, one or more for song lyrics, etc. Templates will save you time and make your slides consistent. Watch this tutorial on how to create templates with ProPresenter.

4. Use Video to Enhance the Message

Utilizing video is a great way to enhance the message and the worship experience. Whether you use a sermon video bumper that ties into the sermon topic and provides a nice transition or utilize other video elements in the service, consider using video when appropriate.

The video above was created by Jared Hanline for a series we did a few years ago called A Dangerous Journey. It was all about the apostle Paul and served as a transition before the sermon and to set the scene. We had a couple of different ones that we used as the series progressed.

5. Be Creative with Your Song Lyrics

Song lyrics provide a great opportunity to be creative with your slide design. If you’re not using IMAG, then you can utilize a series background graphic or motion graphics to create visual interest and enhance the experience.

Here are 20 lyric slide designs that will inspire your creativity.

6. Setup Slides Ahead of Time for your Church Presentations

I’m always surprised at the number of churches that try to setup their slides on Sunday morning just before the service. This creates a lot of stress for those involved and results in more mistakes and errors.

Here a few tips to make your church presentation slide less stressful and more effective:

  • Run through song lyrics during band rehearsal. If this isn’t an option because your band practices in a different space or some other reason, then at least listen to recordings of the songs they are going to play and prepare the slides that way.
  • Ask your pastor for sermon notes a day or two before your first service and set them up ahead of time. This provides time for you to get everything correct and find or add supporting materials.
  • Have someone else double check your slides to catch any errors or mistakes. If you have a volunteer setting up your slides, then you can check their slides.

At my church, we’ve had volunteers setup and create the church presentation slides each week. We were able to achieve this by having detailed setup instructions and a specifications sheet so that volunteers knew what templates and settings to use to have consistency from week to week.

7. Be Tasteful

When it comes to your slide design, be tasteful. You want to enhance the service not distract people. Keep this in mind when selecting graphics. Avoid using clipart and try to use photos.

Keep your transitions and animations simple and don’t crazy just because your presentation software provides a lot of options.

5 Fresh Fonts for Worship Lyric Projection

best font for church presentation

Spring is here and it is time to introduce some new fonts into your worship lyric slides. In the past I have written about  popular fonts  and covered all the common fonts in my ebook  The Worship Media Handbook , so let’s look at some fresh new ones. I have searched far and wide to find free fonts that you can use to freshen up your worship lyric slides.

rodina

This font has nice thick lines and rounded edges. It produces a friendly feel for those upbeat songs. Tip: try reducing the tracking of the font to tighten up your text.

2. Flagship Slab Bold

Flagship-Slab-Bold-copy

I have been liking slab serif fonts a lot lately and this one is no exception. It has nice rounded corners for a relaxed look that is easy on the eyes. Tip: Choose the bold version when your text is small.

3.   SkolaSans Pro Medium Italic

Skola-Sans-Pro

I really like the personality in this font and how it looks italicized. The use of italics in a font can add a sense of movement, excitement and urgency with it’s diagonal lines.  Tip: This font comes in many different variations from regular, medium, light, bold and black. Pick the one that best fits your community.

4. Casper Bold

casper

Everyone needs a winning sans serif font in their arsenal and this is one is fresh. It contains some nice design elements without being over the top. Tip: It comes in a regular weight if you find the bold to heavy for your text.

5. Aleo Bold

Aleo-Bold

I loves this clean, bold serif font. It is very heavy and will look great over a lot of different backgrounds from modern to traditional.

What fresh fonts have you been using lately?

Do you like the worship backgrounds in the examples? They are all from the  June 2014 CMG Pack .

Helping churches everywhere to

Spread the simple gospel through simple technology, powerful church presentation software.

best font for church presentation

MediaShout is church presentation software for displaying song lyrics, scripture, sermon points, and all forms of visual media to the screens for worship gatherings and events.

MediaShout increases engagement for those attending worship gatherings, and behind the scenes, it is loved by church staff and volunteers for its easy, time-saving features. With this powerful software, you’ll be able to quickly insert lyrics from a library, automatically build scripture slides from 70 included Bibles, and easily display any kind of graphic and video files.

MediaShout makes professional presentations easy for your ministry. Also known as “worship software,” MediaShout is the original church presentation software that revolutionized visual worship media. In 1999, MediaShout pioneered the switch from limited office-style software like Microsoft Powerpoint to church-specific software to display non-linear presentations controlled on a separate screen by an operator.

Still today, MediaShout offers the best balance of powerful features, flexibility, value, and ease-of-use in the church presentation and worship software space.

MediaShout allows you to build and run slides on an intuitive, easy to use control screen while showing only your presentation to your audience on a separate “main display” output. This is done by utilizing extended desktop with multiple screens on Windows or Mac. Most of our software versions even include a third output for either a “stage display” (also known as a confidence monitor) or live streams.

With MediaShout’s built-in controls and turn-key functionality, none of this requires you to be a computer or video expert. MediaShout does the work for you so you can focus on ministry.

If you’re a pastor or worship leader, or you lead a women’s ministry, school, or camp, MediaShout 7 will enhance your visual media for worship while simplifying technology so you can focus on what matters most—ministry. MediaShout is at home in any environment requiring live presentations:

Church services  •  Worship gatherings  •  Children’s ministry and classes Women’s ministry events  •  Campus ministries  •  Conferences and retreats Men’s ministry events  •  Christian schools  •  Small groups and Sunday school Young adults and youth gatherings  •  AND MORE!

SOFTWARE REVIEWS

The MediaShout people are super helpful and are constantly working to improve their product. They don’t sell you something and then leave you hanging. One time I sent in a question just before the holidays. I got an answer as soon as the office was open after Christmas was over. I followed the instructions step by step and it totally fixed my problem. They are very friendly, knowledgeable, quick to respond, and speak my language. Oh, and they love the Lord Jesus Christ and live to serve him, and in so doing, they help us and they help meet the needs of the churches that buy their product.

Mediashout let us create a more engaging service for our guests and congregation. We were able to use a wide variety of backgrounds and animations. Additionally we could automate slides like announcements to run on a timer until ready to proceed. The ease of adding media sources like audio and video gave us new avenues to share content with our live audience. Mediashout provided advanced presentation options for our church, giving us lyrics, slides, transitions, media playing capability, and verse sharing on the screens in our sanctuary. Staff and volunteers were able to setup everything that needed to be on the screens for services. We did this in advance, saved the files, and went live on Sundays. Mediashout expanded our capabilities from Powerpoint and incorporate more media, which helped keep our congregation engaged.

MediaShout feels like a really close knit community, where users support each other well, but also MediaShout ‘the company’, support their users well. I love the software, and what we can achieve with it, in serving our church locally. MediaShout is fully featured yet easy to use. It’s easy to train on. Their support is second to none, and they really care about how the software works for you in your situation. They are passionate about making their software easy for us as users, to seamlessly support the process of worship and sharing the gospel.

I am very pleased with the software and think that anyone who needs a quality presenter software should definitely put this on the top of your try list. The product is remarkably simple to teach others how to use. The software is very adaptable for systems. I like the fact that it can handle multiple displays so easily.

Among the inevitable last-minute special event requests was a count down timer to display on the main screens during intermission so everyone would know when it was time to continue the concert. Now, I am not the regular Media Shout guy, in fact I don’t think I had ever actually used it for a live event before. This responsibility falls on me so rarely that I usually just go with PowerPoint. But, a count down timer? I did a quick search on how to create a count down timer in PowerPoint. After skimming, I realized this was not the way to go. So, I opened up MediaShout to see what I could figure out. Oh, my, that was too easy. I dropped in a background to match the concert theme and added a count down timer, gave it a nice font and matching color. Ta-da. The event organizers were happy and it worked flawlessly.

MediaShout transformed our worship service from fragmented and “unprofessional” (I hate that word, but truly it was rough) into something that has flow, form and makes worship run smoothly. Our congregation is older, and we have a gentlemen in his 80s using the program on Sunday morning. That is how easy it is to use! I create the presentations in about an hour, using saved cues, creating new cues and inserting Bible text for each week. It is a great time saver for me, which is very important, since I am one of a two person staff at the church! My experience in creating and presenting with MediaShout has been very good. I do recommend it.

We deploy media shout to many of our clients who prefer a user friendly app that doesnt bog down your computer but still offers a clean, punchy presentation. Media Shout has a great layout and platform that lends itself to a quick learning curve.

We use it in two separate ministries elementary and junior high and off-campus events like camps and retreats. It is very easy to use, I do elementary kids ministry and my kids are able to maneuver around mediashout and use it during our celebration services

MediaShout has allowed our house of worship to increase our production value and provide a more immersive, intentional, and effective ministry to those who attend our services. My favorite features of MediaShout was the amount of customization options the software allows for. I stopped needing to do so much editing work on graphics before importing them, and simply create the exact look I need for a service right within the application.
