Resumes are important for job seekers but can also be tough to create. If you'd like extra help with which skills to include or how to best write your work experience, check out the LinkedIn Resume Assistant in Microsoft Word.

The Resume Assistant is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers. It's a feature in Word for Microsoft 365 on both Windows and Mac. You can also use it with Word online using your personal account, but not with a work or school account. The tool is an English language feature.

Work Experience Examples

Top skills for the position, articles to help write your resume, additional language refinements, suggested jobs, visit linkedin, turn on the linkedin resume assistant in word.

You may already have the Resume Assistant enabled and ready for use. To check, open a Word document and head to the Review tab. You should see the button for "Resume Assistant" on the right side of the ribbon.

If it's there, you can move on to the sections below. If you don't see it, you can enable it in just a few clicks on Windows and Mac.

Enable the Resume Assistant on Windows

With any Word document open, click the File tab and select "Options" in the bottom-left corner.

In the Word Options window, select General on the left and go to LinkedIn Features on the right. Check the box for "Enable LinkedIn Features in My Office Applications" and click OK.

Enable the Resume Assistant on Mac

With any Word document open, click Word > Preferences from the menu bar. Select "General."

In the Settings area at the top, uncheck the box for "Turn Off Resume Assistant." You can then close the Preferences window.

Use the LinkedIn Resume Assistant in Word

You can use the Resume Assistant with a blank document, existing resume, or resume template. Go to the Review tab and click the "Resume Assistant" button in the ribbon as shown above. A sidebar will open on the right of your document.

Before you click "Get Started," make a note of the statement at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. If you agree and want to continue, go ahead and click "Get Started."

Enter the role (job position) and optionally, the industry, in the corresponding fields. As you begin typing, you'll see suggestions in a drop-down list. Select the one that fits your situation best.

The remainder of the sidebar will populate with helpful information for your resume based on the position and the industry listed (if you've entered one).

Starting at the top, you'll see job experience examples from LinkedIn. These are small snippets of how you might word your experiences. Click "Read More" to do exactly that for any of the examples.

You can also use the filter at the top of that section to narrow down examples by top skills.

Below the work experience examples, you'll see the top skills needed for the position you're seeking. These are proficiencies that other job seekers in your field highlight in their resumes.

This is a good way to get an idea of the skills potential that employers are looking for. Add them to your resume if they apply to you.

Next in the sidebar is a list of articles you can check out for additional help. If you select an article, it'll open in your default web browser where you can read it in full.

This is a great section to browse through for suggestions and recommendations when you're writing your resume.

Before you head over to the next section, there's a toggle you can turn on for more help with your resume writing. This editor checks your resume in progress for things like style problems, inappropriate verbiage, and more.

Next, you can have a look at the Suggested Jobs area of the sidebar. This displays open positions, along with their titles, locations, descriptions. Expand the section to read more and see the link to view the job directly on LinkedIn.

Finally, you have a link to head straight over to LinkedIn and work on your profile. Click "Get Started on LinkedIn" to open it in your default web browser.

With its examples, lists, and resources, the LinkedIn Resume Assistant in Word is definitely worth your time spent composing or editing your resume. The first two sections (with examples and top skills) are the most useful. But take a look at the other helpful features, too. They might just give you the edge you need as a job seeker.

With over 80 percent of resumes updated in Word, Resume Assistant helps job seekers showcase accomplishments, be more easily discovered by recruiters, and find their ideal job.

The workplace is changing, impacting not only how people work, but also the frequency with which they change roles, introducing new challenges for job seekers. Nearly 70 percent of people say they have difficulty portraying their work experience effectively, and 50 percent struggle to tailor their resume to a specific job opportunity. I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy. 

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019. 

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role. 

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

Resumaker.ai

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards. 

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is? 

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill. 

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

Kickresume.com

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version. 

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed. 

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect. 

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

When you’re brushing up your resume, Editor for Resume brings additional resume specific and relevant style checks to help ease the wordsmithing pains of this process. On top of Editor’s default grammar and Clarity and Conciseness checks, Editor for Resume automatically turns on five resume specific checks:

• Vague Quantifiers –  Targets imprecise quantifiers. Replacing imprecise quantifiers with more specific expressions can convey more descriptively your message improving the resume’s clarity. (In most cases this rule won’t be able to offer a correction suggestion because the precise expression is unknown.) Example: Coordinated case management for many residents. This will show [No Suggestion available]
• Superfluous Expressions  –  Targets buzzwords and redundancies. Removing buzzwords and redundancies can make a resume more concise and memorable. Example: Recycling project tasks include : creating informational and communication materials for construction recycling. Here the suggestion is to remove tasks include .
• Vague Verbs  –  Targets generic or vague verbs. Using clear and concise verbs can make a resume more powerful and expressive. Example: Worked alongside other engineers in developing new navigation systems. Here the suggestion is to substitute Worked alongside with Collaborated with .
• Avoid First Person References –  Targets first person references. First person references in a resume may be considered redundant. Removing them strengthens the focus on accomplishments. Example: I have a successful record of accomplishment. Here the suggestion offers to substitute I have a successful record with Successful .
• Unsuitable Expressions –  Targets overused expressions. Replacing overused expressions can make a resume more specific and original. Example: A reliable person with practical approach to work . Here reliable would be replaced by dependable .

And some style checks to help with the resume writing experience:

• Informal Language –  Targets informal words and phrases which are more appropriate for familiar, conversational settings. Please consider using more formal language. Example: Our atmosphere includes comfy massage chairs. Here comfy is corrected to comfortable.
• Clich és –  Targets overused and predictable words or phrases and suggests to replace them with an alternative phrase. Example: Institutions seem caught between a rock and a hard place. The phrase between a rock and a hard place would be corrected to in a difficult situation
• Slang  –  Targets regional expressions or slang terms which may not be understood by a general audience, and should therefore be avoided in formal writing. Consider using more standard expressions. Example: My cat barfed all over my homework last night. Barfed is corrected to vomited.
• Double Negation –  Targets the ambiguous use of negations. The use of two negative words may be interpreted as indicating a positive. To avoid confusion, do not use double negation. Example: I did not see nothing . It is corrected to I did not see anything.

Availability

To use Editor for Resume, you must:

• Be an Office 365 subscriber on the Insider Fast level.
• Have Microsoft Word for Windows version 1809 (Build 10912.10000) or later installed.

Getting Started

To call up the Editor for Resume:

• In Word for Windows, load your resume. This should trigger the Resume Assistant pane and Editor for Resume will be on automatically. You can also access Resume Assistant from the Ribbon in the Review tab.
• In the Resume Assistant pane, after entering a role and industry, you can scroll down to the Editor toggle card

Scenarios to Try

After loading you resume, review any of proofing mark either directly in the canvas via the context menu or in the Editor Pane. You can call up the Editor Pane by:

• Clicking the “Check Document” button in Review tab of the Ribbon.
• Pressing the F7 key.
• Clicking the Proofing icon in Status Bar.

Known Issues

Currently, Editor for Resume only supports English. Additional languages will come later next year.

A data specialist shares the 2-page résumé that got him a $300,000 job at Google — and explains 3 details he got right on it.

• After a full day of work at Deloitte, he would spend hours every night teaching himself how to code.
• The résumé that landed Virmani a job at Google is two pages long — a decision he defends today.

Ankit Virmani had spent five years in consulting when he began eyeing a shift to tech.

"I always thought in my heart that I wanted more technical depth. I wanted to build things rather than sell them too much," said Virmani, who first moved to the US from India to pursue a master's degree.

In the first half of 2020, he dove right in.

After wrapping up a day at his full-time job at Deloitte, Virmani would spend three to four hours practicing coding every night, and another two hours reading up about the industry. He also began spending time with people in the field, asking them about real-time scenarios and what challenges they face in their jobs.

"I didn't want answers from them. I wanted their thought process —how do they navigate through these complex challenges at scale," he told Business Insider.

It didn't pay off right away. He was rejected by Microsoft and Amazon at different stages of their application processes.

Six months after deciding to switch careers, he landed a role as a data and machine learning specialist at Google's Seattle office.

Sacrificing the 'one-page only' résumé rule

Looking back on his résumé four years later, Virmani said he would make some formatting changes.

"This résumé is giving importance to everything equally, which is what I don't like," he said. "I would have a gradient of importance, like executive summary on top, achievements so far, and then I would go to professional experience, education, and technical skills."

But with more insight into what employers like Google appreciate, Virmani said he would keep several things the same — including the length of the document.

Sacrificing the "one-page only" rule to improve readability: Virmani broke the "one-page only" rule and prioritized having an uncluttered résumé. "It has very neatly structured sections and high-level themes," he said about using subheadings like "data architecture" and "cloud strategy." His manager at Google later told him that style helped them pick up on his responsibilities without having to decipher the lines below.

Highlighting team effort: Virmani said some people overly highlight individual contributions on their résumé: "It's never that way, at least in my experience — it's always teamwork." That's why he focused parts of his résumé on his teams' accomplishments. "In my experience, Google highly, highly appreciates honesty and humility. That's the culture of the company — we know that nothing great gets achieved by an individual," he said.

Saving some details for the interview: Virmani said he was careful not to over-explain his past projects so that he could build curiosity and have a good conversation during the interview: "If you put everything in the résumé, you'll run out of points to talk about in the interview."

Virmani is not alone in choosing to sacrifice "typical" résumé decisions. For Shola West, that came in the shape of breaking the "no résumé gap" idea.

West is part of a growing group of Gen Zs who are trying to destigmatize the résumé gap — a period of unemployment between jobs or between education and work.

West previously told BI she took a yearlong break at the start of her career to understand what she really wanted to pursue. She embraced her résumé gap and now works at an advertising agency and runs a career advice side hustle.

For Mariana Kobayashi, breaking from the résumé norms meant abandoning the written format altogether.

Kobayashi landed a role as an account executive at Google after she curated a video about why she should get the role.

She sent her video résumé, which took her 10 hours to create, to the hiring manager directly, Kobayashi previously told BI. A Google recruiter saw the video and reached out to her, and she eventually landed a role at the tech giant.

In a campus email, Lee H. Roberts wrote it's a privilege to interact with students and inspiring to learn about the diverse range of interests they're working on.

Dear Carolina Community,

Some of the best conversations I’ve had this semester have been with students. Hearing what brought them to Carolina, what projects are exciting them or stressing them out (or both), and what they’re hoping to do after graduation.

When it comes to future ambitions, I hear a mix of detailed career plans and deep uncertainty — and that’s exactly as it should be. A good education is supposed to change your mind, open up new possibilities and give you the confidence to pursue goals you hadn’t considered before. That’s certainly been true for my own college-age kids as they neared graduation, and I’m glad to hear that spirit of exploration alive and well among this generation of Tar Heels.

In just the last couple weeks, I’ve listened to:

• Student journalists thinking hard about how to be fair and open-minded on a campus with lots of competing viewpoints.
• A senior waiting to take graduation photos at the Old Well, preparing to ship out to Pensacola, Florida, after graduation to begin flight school for the U.S. Navy.
• Student scientists, engineers and environmental advocates sharing their work with young children at the recent UNC Science Expo as part of the more than 700 volunteers showing kids how exciting it is to discover new things.
• Incoming student government officers expressing their excitement to represent their peers and support a welcoming campus for students and scholars of all backgrounds.

Most people don’t get the privilege of spending much time with college students. I often think that if they could see what I see daily, they would be inspired and encouraged for our future. It’s incredible to hear the diverse range of things our students are working on and involved in at any given moment, and I’m grateful they bring so many different perspectives and ideas to our University.

Whether you’re wrapping up this semester with a clear sense of what’s next or a wide-open question mark about the future, I hope Carolina is giving you plenty of encouragement and a whole lot to think about. Sincerely,
