Six new priests for Diocese of Orange First class to be ordained at recently dedicated Christ Cathedral
On a jewel of a day, with Christ Cathedral glittering in the morning sun, six new priests became the first class to be ordained at the flagship cathedral for the Diocese of Orange.
A packed church enthusiastically greeted the new ordinands, whose Saturday, July 27 entrance into the priesthood was delayed so they could be properly welcomed at the new cathedral, which was dedicated just 10 days earlier.
Erialdo Ramirez Alfaro, Scott Allen, Michael Nguyen, Daniel Seo, Joseph Squillacioti and Martin Vu represent the largest incoming group in recent years.
Of the six incoming priests, three were assigned as parochial vicars to local parishes where they had already begun their assignments. Alfaro, 29, is serving at St. Cecilia Church, Tustin; Vu, 29, is with Santiago de Compostela Church, Lake Forest; and Seo, 29, is at Holy Family parish in Orange, where he celebrated a morning mass the day after his ordination.
Allen, 34, Nguyen, 28, and Squillacioti, 43, return to Rome, where they will undertake postgraduate studies. Allen is attending the Pontifical North American College, where he will concentrate on Thomistic studies, or the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Nguyen will continue in canon law at Casa Santa Maria, and Squillacioti will also attend Casa Santa Maria, where he is pursuing advanced classes in liturgical studies.

I have to wonder why all the advanced studies in Rome. That must total mucho $$$. How many Orange Diocese priests are in these advanced studies??
Same thing crossed my mind, especially for newly minted priests in a diocese that surely needs them to pastor souls.
OC is trying too hard to pump the new cathedral. Flagship cathedral? Give me a break.
Agreed. I wondered what a “flagship” Cathedral is. I hope that big, glass, angular, defunct Protestant buildings isn’t it.
God bless these men in their ministries and life in Christ!
What kind of priests? Today, the Church’s institutional destruction has been caused by intolerance to what Christ, and His Church, taught. The NewChurch has often created NewPriests that simply do not know much about, or believe, in the Real Presence, the evil of homosexual sex, the importance of the entire Church’s history, not just since VII. Pray for these men.
Those who defend the Church, as I often do here, are often attacked just as Trump is often attacked by the progressive leftists who hate America. Those who only see the imperfections of the Church simply have no love for the Church, for God’s people, as Christ the Bridegroom loves her. People, love the traditional institutions of our society: love America, love the Church–because they are being attacked and trashed just as “SC” routinely attacks the Church here. If you don’t like the Church, “get out” (thank you Donald Trump!).

Diocese of Manchester adds three names to list of priest accused of abuse
Apr. 10—The Diocese of Manchester has added three names to its online list of dozens of priests credibly accused of child sexual abuse going back to 1950, church officials announced this week.
The three new entries represent the first additions to the Diocese's Restoring Trust website since it was launched in 2019, a spokesperson for the Diocese said.
The Restoring Trust website provides the year each priest was ordained, his parish assignments and his status, which ranges from criminal conviction to being defrocked to "assigned to a life of prayer and penance."
The list includes 76 names of priests, 51 of whom are dead. Most of the referenced cases have been concluded. Two are listed as pending.
The information and additional resources are available at catholicnh.org/restoringtrust .
The Rev. George Desjardins has been added under the category "Cases Concluded" for a recently received report of abuse that took place more than 40 years ago, officials said. Desjardins, who has has been retired since 2002, is prohibited from ministry.
Desjardins served at St. Peter, Farmington (beginning May 29, 1959); St. Anthony, Manchester (June 12, 1959); Sacred Heart, Lebanon (Sept. 7, 1966); St. John the Baptist, Manchester (Oct. 4, 1968); Holy Redeemer, West Lebanon (April 2, 1973); Sacred Heart, Manchester (April 23, 1974); St. George, Manchester (June 20, 1985). After retirement in 2002, though not assigned by the diocesan bishop, he is reported to have assisted at Sacred Heart Parish, Concord; St. John the Evangelist Parish, Concord, and St. John Regional School, Concord.
The Rev. Matthew Schultz has been listed on the Manchester diocese's website under the category "Cases in Process" — these are cases involving living Diocesan priests for which the canonical proceedings are not complete. Schultz is prohibited from ministry.
"Out of respect for those involved and because the case is still in process, no further information will be disclosed at this time," the Diocese said in a statement.
Schultz was assigned to St. Michael, Exeter (beginning June 21, 2017); Gate of Heaven, Lancaster (June 27, 2018); Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Rochester (July 13, 2022); and St. Leo, Gonic (July 13, 2022). Although not assigned by the diocesan bishop, he is reported to have assisted at Mount Royal Academy North in Lancaster.
The Rev. André Thibodeau has been listed on the diocese as a deceased priest accused of sexual abuse of a minor for a report received after his death. He died in 2015.
Ordained in 1971, Thibodeau was assigned to St. Paul, Franklin (beginning June 8, 1971); St. Mary, Manchester (June 11, 1975); St. Augustine, Manchester (March 10, 1976); Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Manchester (March 29, 1982); St. Theresa, Henniker (Jan. 15, 1987); St. Mary, Hillsboro (June 21, 2000); and as chaplain at St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (June 2, 2008).
"Law enforcement has been notified of the reports concerning all three priests," the Diocese said in a statement. "Whenever it becomes aware of a report of sexual abuse of a minor by a priest, deacon, diocesan employee, or volunteer, the Diocese ensures that the New Hampshire Attorney General's office is notified, even if the misconduct took place many years ago."
Anyone with information pertaining to sexual abuse in the Church is encouraged to make a report to law enforcement. For information on how to report abuse, to request counseling or other services, or to learn more about how the Diocese of Manchester works to create a safe environment in all its ministries, visit catholicnh.org/safety .

Tesla management told employees Monday that the recent layoffs -- which gutted some departments by 20% and even hit high performers -- were largely due to poor financial performance, a source familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. The move comes as Tesla has seen its profit margin narrow over the past several quarters, the result of an EV price war that has persisted for at least a year.

High school sports | mater dei removes frank mcmanus as football coach after one season, mcmanus, who replaced longtime coach bruce rollinson, led mater dei to cif southern section and cif state championships in the 2023 season.
Frank McManus has been dismissed as head coach of Mater Dei’s football team after one season, the school announced Friday.
McManus coached the Monarchs to CIF Southern Section Division 1 and CIF State Open Division championships in the 2023 season. They went 13-1, with the loss to St. John Bosco in a Trinity League game. Mater Dei beat St. John Bosco in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game.
He replaced Bruce Rollinson who resigned after the 2022 season , his 34th as head coach at Mater Dei. McManus had been an assistant coach under Rollinson.
Mater Dei’s release did not specify reasons for the school’s decision.
“We are saddened to announce Coach McManus’ departure from Mater Dei High School. We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Mater Dei president Michael Brennan.
Randy Wright, coordinator of football operations and marketing, will serve as the interim head coach with support from Khaled Holmes, who will continue in his position as associate head coach.
Brennan said there would be no additional comments from the school.
McManus did not reply to a texted request for comment.
In December, Brennan praised McManus after the Monarchs’ 35-0 victory against Serra of San Mateo in the state championship game.
“Frank did an outstanding job this year,” Brennan told The Register. “I don’t think we could have asked for anything more from a coach. He grinds it out. He works very long hours, and he really worked hard to continue to help the Mater Dei program become the best version of itself.”
“It was a huge hire,” Brennan added of McManus. “I think we did (get it right). Frank is a very special person and we’re very, very grateful to have him as our head coach, and the relationship he has with the kids is a very special relationship because they know that he loves them. … If they step a little out of line, they know that he’s correcting them because he loves them.”
The style of McManus, 47, was visibly and audibly different from Rollinson’s.
Rollinson wore a tie at games. A cap facing backwards was often part of McManus’ look on the sidelines.
Rollinson’s postgame comments were measured and slowly delivered. During a TV interview after Mater Dei beat St. John Bosco in the CIF-SS final, McManus yelled “We will lace ‘em up, in the middle of Bristol, and take anyone on,” a reference to Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman that would be crowned as 2023 national champions by MaxPreps.com.
At a 7-on-7 passing tournament Sunday at Beckman High, McManus could be heard swearing at eighth-grade level players on his team.
The football program at Mater Dei, a Diocese of Orange coed high school in Santa Ana, has attracted notoriety beyond its consistent on-field success.
A 2021 locker room incident, a fight between two of the football program’s players in which one of the players suffered what was described as a brain injury, led to a since-settled lawsuit that accused Mater Dei and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, with which Mater Dei is affiliated, of attempting to cover up the incident.
Brennan was hired as Mater Dei president in January of 2022, replacing Fr. Walter Jenkins. Changing the culture course of Mater Dei athletics was part of his assignment.
One of Brennan’s earlier moves at Mater Dei was to install Joel Hartmann in the newly-created position of executive director of athletics. Hartmann had worked in the athletic department at Servite when Brennan was Servite principal.
Jenkins was Mater Dei president for six months. Before Jenkins left, he hired a Sacramento law firm to examine Mater Dei’s safety protocols and its athletics program. The results of that assessment have not been made public.
Staff writer Dan Albano contributed to the report.
