Wellcome Doctoral Training Centre in Public Health Economics and Decision Science

Generously funded by Wellcome and the University of Sheffield , this four-year PhD programme provides doctoral-level research training in public health, economics, statistics and mathematical modelling. Since 2016 we have recruited 55 students from all over the world, with the last cohort due to complete the programme in 2028.

University of Sheffield PhD Scholarships

For 2024 entry, the University of Sheffield are delighted to offer five fully-funded University of Sheffield Research Scholarships for students who are UK National, classified as ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes and identify as Black or Black British (of African or Caribbean heritage), Asian or Asian British (of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian heritage) or are of multiple ethnic backgrounds including one of the ethnicity groups listed above.

Award details

Awards will cover tuition fees and a stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £18,622 in 2023). Please consult with your chosen department as to whether funding will cover only Home tuition fees or the full International fee, and what support is available for research costs. 

These scholarships fund up to three and a half years full-time or seven years part-time study, subject to satisfactory progress.

Part-time studentships are paid at 50% of the full-time rate.

Eligibility

• You should have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent, and meet any other entry requirements stipulated by your chosen department. 
• You should be applying to start your first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD in the 2024/25 academic year.

How to apply

All applicants are required to submit a study application via the  Postgraduate Online Application Form . 

Applicants must select a start date of no earlier than  1st September 2024 . Current offer holders with a start date of September 2024 or later will be able to log back into their study applications to access the scholarship form.

Applicants to the  Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Engineering, Science  and  Social Science  must ensure that they complete the additional ‘Scholarship Application’ section of the Postgraduate Online Application Form. This section of the form is only accessible to those who select a PhD start date of 1 September 2024 or later. Applicants to the  Faculty of Health  should visit  this page  for instructions.

• Department of Landscape Architecture

Sheffield receives top rankings in the UK for Landscape Design in the National Student Survey

The University of Sheffield leads in teaching and resources, as ranked by students in the 2024 NSS results.

The University of Sheffield is ranked number one in the subject area of Landscape Design for “teaching on my course” and “learning resources”. The National Student Survey (NSS) allows undergraduate students to share feedback on their university experience and the quality of their courses. 

For the second year in a row, The University of Sheffield has also been placed number one in the Russell Group in the overall rankings. 

The NSS results follow Sheffield being voted University of the Year by students , as well as Best Students’ Union and Best Student Life in this year’s Whatuni Student Choice Awards.  

Professor Helen Woolley, Head of Department of Landscape Architecture, said: "This National Student Survey result affirms that our students experience the best education for Landscape Design in the country. This is because of the commitment of the staff involved in teaching as well as the professional services, media, IT and technical staff who work with the academics. Academic staff inform their teaching by their research across the planning, design and management of landscapes, and practitioners bring an additional layer of expertise to the education experience. Our network of employers enhances the education experience providing opportunities to meet and learn from professionals in small to large multi-disciplinary practices."
