How to Cite a Thesis or Dissertation in APA

In this citation guide, you will learn how to reference and cite an undergraduate thesis, master’s thesis, or doctoral dissertation. This guide will also review the differences between a thesis or dissertation that is published and one that has remained unpublished. The guidelines below come from the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020a), pages 333 and 334. Please note that the association is not affiliated with this guide.

Guide Overview

Citing an unpublished thesis or dissertation, citing a published dissertation or thesis from a database, citing a thesis or dissertation published online but not from a database, citing a thesis or dissertation: reference overview, what you need.

Since unpublished theses can usually only be sourced in print form from a university library, the correct citation structure includes the university name where the publisher element usually goes.

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year published). Title in sentence case [Unpublished degree type thesis or dissertation]. Name of institution.

Ames, J. H., & Doughty, L. H. (1911). The proposed plans for the Iowa State College athletic field including the design of a reinforced concrete grandstand and wall [Unpublished bachelor’s thesis]. Iowa State University.

In-text citation example:

• Parenthetical :  (Ames & Doughty, 1911)
• Narrative :  Ames & Doughty (1911)

If a thesis or dissertation has been published and is found on a database, then follow the structure below. It’s similar to the format for an unpublished dissertation/thesis, but with a few differences:

• The institution is presented in brackets after the title
• The archive or database name is included

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year published). Title in sentence case (Publication or Document No.) [Degree type thesis or dissertation, Name of institution]. Database name.

Examples 1:

Knight, K. A. (2011). Media epidemics: Viral structures in literature and new media (Accession No. 2013420395) [Doctoral dissertation, University of California, Santa Barbara]. ProQuest Dissertations Publishing.

Trotman, J.B. (2018). New insights into the biochemistry and cell biology of RNA recapping (Document No. osu1523896565730483) [Doctoral dissertation, Ohio State University]. OhioLINK Electronic Theses & Dissertations Center.

In the example given above, the dissertation is presented with a Document Number (Document No.). Sometimes called a database number or publication number, this is the identifier that is used by the database’s indexing system. If the database you are using provides you with such a number, then include it directly after the work’s title in parentheses.

It is important to note that not every thesis or dissertation published online will be associated with a specific archive or collection. If the work is published on a private website, provide only the URL as the source element.

When you decide to cite a dissertation or thesis, you’ll need to look for the following information to use in your citation:

• Author’s last name, and first and middle initials
• Year published
• Title of thesis or dissertation
• If it is unpublished
• Publication or document number (if applicable; for published work)
• Degree type (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral)
• Thesis or dissertation
• Name of institution awarding degree
• DOI (https://doi.org/xxxxx) or URL (if applicable)

Since theses and dissertations are directly linked to educational degrees, it is necessary to list the name of the associated institution; i.e., the college, university, or school that is awarding the associated degree.

Abschlussarbeiten und Dissertationen anderer Studierender können dir für deine eigene Arbeit als Quelle dienen.

Nach den APA-Richtlinien muss hierbei immer der genaue Titel der Abschlussarbeit zusammen mit der Art der Arbeit angegeben werden.

Inhaltsverzeichnis

Abschlussarbeiten als quelle benutzen, abschlussarbeiten nach apa richtig zitieren, veröffentlichte abschlussarbeit, unveröffentlichte abschlussarbeit, häufig gestellte fragen.

Dissertationen werden in der Regel in elektronischen Datenbanken veröffentlicht und sind so für eine große Leserschaft öffentlich zugänglich. Es kann auch vorkommen, dass eine gedruckte Version vorliegt.

Generell solltest du Abschlussarbeiten und Dissertationen nur dann zitieren, wenn die Erkenntnisse von der Autorenschaft selbst gewonnen wurden und sie einen Mehrwert für deine eigene Arbeit bieten.

Beim Zitieren von Abschlussarbeiten und Dissertationen gilt es zu beachten, dass du diese als Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis angegeben musst.

Nach den APA-Richtlinien werden Abschlussarbeiten und Dissertationen mit einem Verweis im Text zitiert und erhalten einen entsprechenden Eintrag im Literaturverzeichnis .

Bei der veröffentlichten Abschlussarbeit folgt auf den Titel eine Klammer mit der Art der Arbeit und dem Namen der Hochschule.

Falls du auf die Dissertation über Open-Access-Veröffentlichungen zugreifst, muss die jeweilige URL zusätzlich angegeben werden.

Seit der 7. Auflage der APA-Richtlinien musst du jedoch weder das Abrufdatum der Website noch den Zusatz ‚Abgerufen von‘ nennen. Stattdessen wird nur noch der Name der Website und die entsprechende URL aufgelistet.

Falls die Abschlussarbeit nicht veröffentlicht wurde, muss bei der Art der Arbeit der Zusatz ,unveröffentlicht‘ hinzugefügt werden.

Zu deiner Korrektur

Die Quellenangabe für veröffentlichte Abschlussarbeiten und Dissertationen folgt nach den APA-Richtlinien immer dem gleichen Schema.

Quellenangabe Abschlussarbeit nach APA Nachname der Autorenschaft, Initialen der Vornamen. (Jahr). Titel der Abschlussarbeit (Art der Arbeit, Name der Hochschule). Name der Website. URL

Sieh dir an, wie unveröffentlichte Abschlussarbeiten nach APA zitiert werden.

Laut APA darfst du Abschlussarbeiten anderer Studierender als Quelle in deiner eigenen Arbeit verwenden. Achte jedoch darauf, dass die Ergebnisse, auf die du verweist, vom jeweiligen Autor selbst gewonnen wurden.

Die Informationen, auf die du verweist, sollten zudem einen wertvollen Mehrwert für deine eigene Arbeit liefern.

Abschlussarbeiten dürfen nur dann nicht verwendet werden, wenn sie einen Sperrvermerk enthalten.

Die APA-Zitierregeln ist einer der am meisten genutzten Zitierstile . Im Oktober 2019 hat die American Psychological Association (APA) die 7. Version des APA Publication Manuals veröffentlicht.

Diese Anleitung wird dir helfen, vertrauter mit dem Zitieren nach der neuesten 7. Version von APA und den Formatierungsrichtlinien zu werden.

Wenn du dich in deiner Arbeit auf eine Quelle beziehst, verwendest du Verweise im Text . Das bedeutet, dass du den Nachnamen des Autors bzw. der Autorin sowie das Erscheinungsjahr direkt in dem Satz zitierst, in dem du die Information nutzt.

Am Ende deiner Abschlussarbeit fügst du außerdem ein Literaturverzeichnis ein, in dem du alle deine verwendeten Quellen vollständig auflistest. Dies ermöglicht deinen Lesern, die von dir genutzen Quellen wiederzufinden. Darüber hinaus ist es ein wichtiger Schritt, um kein Plagiat zu begehen.

Verweise im Text

Ein Verweis im Text ist eine präzise Methode, deiner Leserschaft zu zeigen, woher die ursprüngliche Idee stammt, und die Originalautoren zu würdigen.

Gemäß den APA-Richtlinien musst du die Nachnamen der Autoren sowie das Erscheinungsjahr der Publikation nennen. Dies kann auf verschiedenen Wegen erfolgen:

Wenn eine Quelle aus zwei Autoren besteht, trennst du ihre Nachnamen durch ein Und-Zeichen voneinander. Im Fließtext werden die Namen durch ein ‚und‘ voneinander getrennt.

3 oder mehr Autoren

Publikationen mit 3 oder mehr Autoren werden ab der ersten Angabe gekürzt. Anstatt alle Nachnamen zu schreiben, nennst du lediglich den Nachnamen des ersten Autors und fügst ‚ et al. ‘ hinzu.

Die Abkürzung ‚ et al. ‘ steht für ‚ et alii ‘ (lateinisch: ‚und andere‘).

Wenn die Quelle von einem Unternehmen und nicht von einer Person publiziert wurde, zitierst du den Namen der Firma als Autor.

Wenn du einen Textauszug aus einer anderen Quelle wortwörtlich wiedergibst und in Anführungszeichen setzt, zitierst du. Beim Verwenden von Zitaten musst du die Seitenzahl im Quellenverweis hinzufügen.

Manchmal müssen mehrere Quellen für eine Information angegeben werden. Dafür zitierst du mehrere Quellen und trennst diese durch ein Semikolon voneinander ab.

Literaturverzeichnis

Jede Quelle, die du in deinem Text angibst, muss vollständig im Literaturverzeichnis aufgeführt werden.

Die Formatierung ist abhängig von der Art der Quelle (z. B. Webseite, Journal, Buch usw.), aber jede Quellenangabe beginnt identisch:

Beachte: Buchtitel sollten kursiv hervorgehoben werden.

Füge die URL oder wenn möglich, den Digital Object Identifier ( DOI ) am Ende der Quellenangabe hinzu.

Kapitel aus Sammelbänden zitieren

Artikel aus fachzeitschrift zitieren.

Liegt der Artikel nicht als gedruckte Version vor, muss zusätzlich der DOI oder die URL am Ende der Quellenangabe hinzugefügt werden.

DOIs werden gleichermaßen formatiert wie URLs.

Beachte: Der Titel der Zeitschrift und die Nummer des Bands sollten kursiv gesetzt werden.

Für Internetquellen muss eine URL angegeben werden.

Ein Abrufdatum zusammen mit dem Zusatz ‚Abgerufen von‘ muss nur angegeben werden, wenn dieses notwendig ist (z. B. bei Wikipedia-Artikeln , da diese sich regelmäßig ändern).

Hierbei wird nichts kursiv hervorgehoben.

Filme zitieren

Mehrere Autoren werden im Literaturverzeichnis durch Kommata und einem Und-Zeichen voneinander getrennt.

Bis zu 20 Autoren stehen im Literaturverzeichnis

Es gibt gewisse Formatierungsrichtlinien, an die du dich halten musst, wenn du einen Artikel im APA-Stil verfasst.

Die grundlegenden Anforderungen sind:

• Der Text muss einen doppelten Zeilenabstand haben.
• Die Seitenränder müssen mindestens 2,5 cm betragen.
• Verschiedene Schriftarten und Schriftgrößen stehen zur Verfügung:
• Lucida sans Unicode 10

Plagiat liegt vor, wenn die Arbeit einer anderen Person kopiert wird, ohne diese zu würdigen. Dies ist nicht nur unfair gegenüber dem Originalautor bzw. der Originalautorin, sondern wird darüber hinaus als Betrug angesehen. Plagiat kann direkte Konsequenzen für dich haben. Versuche also immer, Plagiat zu vermeiden!

Hinweise, um Plagiat in deiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit zu vermeiden:

• Speichere deine Quellen ab. So kannst du sie nachverfolgen. Du musst zu Beginn die Quelle nicht unbedingt schon perfekt formatieren.
• Wenn du einen Text zitierst oder paraphrasierst , kannst du ihn vorübergehend farblich markieren. So weißt du, dass du an dieser Stelle noch die korrekte Quelle ergänzen musst. Überprüfe, ob du all deine Quellen richtig zitiert hast – sowohl im Text als auch im Literaturverzeichnis.
• Zitiere, paraphrasiere und resümiere andere Arbeiten korrekt.
• Führe eine Plagiatsprüfung durch.

The in-text citation for a book includes the author’s last name, the year, and (if relevant) a page number.

In the reference list , start with the author’s last name and initials, followed by the year. The book title is written in sentence case (only capitalize the first word and any proper nouns ). Include any other contributors (e.g. editors and translators) and the edition if specified (e.g. “2nd ed.”).

A citation of an ebook (i.e. a book accessed on an e-reader) or a book viewed online (e.g. on Google Books or in PDF form ) includes the DOI where available. If there is no DOI, link to the page where you viewed the book, or where the ebook can be purchased or accessed.

Since ebooks sometimes do not include page numbers, APA recommends using other methods of identifying a specific passage in your in-text citations—for example, a chapter or section title, or a paragraph number.

When citing a particular chapter from a book containing texts by various authors (e.g. a collection of essays), begin the citation with the author of the chapter and mention the book’s editor(s) later in the reference. A page range identifies the chapter’s location in the book.

Some books come in multiple volumes. You may want to cite the entire book if you’ve used multiple volumes, or just a single volume if that was all you used.

Citing a single volume

When citing from one volume of a multivolume book, the format varies slightly depending on whether each volume has a title or just a number.

If the volume has a specific title, this should be written as part of the title in your reference list entry.

If the volume is only numbered, not titled, the volume number is not italicized and appears in parentheses after the title.

Citing a multivolume book as a whole

When citing the whole book, mention the volumes in parentheses after the title. Individual volume titles are not included even if they do exist.

When a book’s chapters are written by different authors, you should cite the specific chapter you are referring to.

When all the chapters are written by the same author (or group of authors), you should usually cite the entire book, but some styles include exceptions to this.

• In APA Style , single-author books should always be cited as a whole, even if you only quote or paraphrase from one chapter.
• In MLA Style , if a single-author book is a collection of stand-alone works (e.g. short stories ), you should cite the individual work.
• In Chicago Style , you may choose to cite a single chapter of a single-author book if you feel it is more appropriate than citing the whole book.

The abbreviation “ et al. ” (meaning “and others”) is used to shorten APA in-text citations with three or more authors . Here’s how it works:

Only include the first author’s last name, followed by “et al.”, a comma and the year of publication, for example (Taylor et al., 2018).

In the 7th edition of the APA manual, no location information is required for publishers. The 6th edition previously required you to include the city and state where the publisher was located, but this is no longer the case.

If you’re citing from an edition other than the first (e.g. a 2nd edition or revised edition), the edition appears in the reference, abbreviated in parentheses after the book’s title (e.g. 2nd ed. or Rev. ed.).
