The Business Model of Airtel - Diving deep into How exactly Airtel makes money

Anik Banerjee

Anik Banerjee , Indumathi B

The success of a company is just the tip of the iceberg below which lies the business model of the company.

Hard work and dedication to the services, funds from other companies, and robust marketing strategies are some prominent factors that drive a company towards success, but the business model can be deemed as the base of the company, on which the business is built. The business model is nothing but a company’s plan to make a profit which is why it plays a major role in new and well-established companies as well.

With the world today that is encouraging more and more businesses to grow, only some manage to evolve to their full potential. One of such businesses that have stood up with their robust business model and have become a key player in the telecommunication industry is Airtel. Here, we will walk through their business model and how it helped the company carve a niche for itself.

Bharti Airtel: An Introduction Business Model of Airtel How does Airtel make money through its business model? Airtel’s competition with other companies FAQ

Bharti Airtel: An Introduction

Airtel has an array of different services that attract both individuals and companies across varied industries.

Revenue of Airtel

Business Model of Airtel

Airtel showcases an exemplary business model for others to follow irrespective of the industry that each belongs to. Airtel focuses mainly on two things: customer acquisition and servicing (retention) and business development or expansion. Their vision and mission clearly state that their ultimate goal is to be a globally admired telecom service and to mainly focus on customer satisfaction and provide them innovative services that tend to be cost-efficient products.

The other functions that include hardware, network management, backend applications (billing, etc.), and other services are outsourced. This business model has been pioneered by Airtel and inspires many newcomers in the game.

What is unique in the business model of Airtel?

As we have already mentioned, Airtel believes in outsourcing everything else apart from their marketing , sales, and finance operations and the 'minutes factory' model of low cost and high volumes.

Airtel is widely recognized as the pioneer of such a strategy, inspiring tens of thousands of other brands and entrepreneurs . The equipment of Airtel is also provided and maintained by other companies namely Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia Networks; and US-based Amdocs provides Airtel with the IT support that the brand requires.

In its business model, Airtel has underlined some key points that they term as strategic business pillars for their businesses. These are:

  • Focus on Quality customers - Airtel aims to provide value for their customers along with the differentiated services that they provide.
  • Opening doors for new revenues - The brand is now helping its non-mobile wings like Airtel Business, Digital TV, and Broadband services to grow along with an eye to bring in new verticals.
  • Providing Top-of-the-line services - Airtel aims to bring in the best possible network quality to their customers with the help of cutting-edge infrastructure and advanced automation tools and technology.
  • Employee-centric culture - Along with investing huge on the digital talent, Airtel makes sure that it hands over significant roles to each of its employees and ensures they grow along with the firm.
  • Eco-friendly approach - Airtel advocates the reduction of overuse of resources and cutting down its operational expenses to the minimum with an eye on the environment.

Along with its basic strategies as Airtel business plan, it is working on future strategies, to retain its top position, such as bringing more innovation in its services, exploring new plans and products, providing valuable and quality services to its customers.

How does Airtel make money through its business model?

Airtel makes money through all the products and services mentioned above. It uses a B2C model to derive income from its customers and a B2B model, registered under Airtel Business that helps startups and SMEs . Airtel stands out with its unique business model that aims to provide the customers with the best services at competitive prices.

It is to be remembered that Airtel is not one of the companies that have achieved fast growth but one that stands as a market leader purely because it has innovated things and earned its place. Furthermore, it is also one of the few telecommunications services providers that have realized the importance of value-added services (VAS) right away in the start, which further eased its way.

Airtel’s competition with other companies

Airtel snatched the market from Essar by providing services before them and holding the position until them with the help of high usage premium clients.

Telecommunication services mainly have two important characteristics which are quality and price of the service, with that said, Airtel makes sure that they establish service by giving high importance to the characteristics and being a high-quality service provider with a premium image.

Airtel has witnessed gradual growth and has emerged as a promising brand in the telecommunications sector with the help of a foolproof business model, a meticulous understanding of its key concepts, years of hard work, tireless efforts, and absolute dedication. Airtel success story surely is a huge inspiration to legions of other businesses across different domains.

Airtel Payments Bank Adds Biometric Verification Solution to Protect Accounts

India’s Airtel Payments Bank reportedly added a biometric verification solution called Face Match to enhance the security of customer accounts.

This solution uses facial recognition and liveliness checks to verify account users in cases in which the bank’s machine learning (ML) algorithms have detected potentially fraudulent transactions, CXO Today reported Tuesday (Aug. 20).

Airtel did not immediately reply to PYMNTS’ request for comment.

Face Match first calculates a threat score based on user behavior, transaction pattern and location, historical data, device and mobile app-based signals, according to the report.

If a user exceeds this threat score, the account is secured to prevent fraudulent transactions and the user is notified on their mobile number that they must complete a quick verification to proceed with a transaction, the report said.

A link in the notification takes the user to the Face Match section of the Airtel app, where they can take a selfie that is then compared to a photo from their onboarding process, per the report.

If there is a successful match, the user can continue with their transactions; if there isn’t , they must visit a banking location for biometric verification, the report said.

Biometric authentication tools have been embraced in the United States, according to the PYMNTS Intelligence and AWS collaboration , “ Tracking the Digital Payments Takeover: Biometric Authentication in the Age of Mobile .”

More than half of U.S. consumers who completed online purchases used biometric authentication to validate their transactions, with 28% of these consumers using facial recognition and 49% using fingerprint scans.

The report also found that about 15% of U.S. consumers have not used biometric authentication methods but are interested in doing so , while 34% have not used those methods and are not interest in doing so.

In another deployment of biometric technology, IDEX Biometrics said Aug. 14 that TaluCard plans to launch a physical biometric payment card and complementary app designed to provide an accessible and secure payment solution for users with visual impairments.

Slated for introduction in the United Kingdom in late 2024, the payment card features fingerprint authentication, tactile guidance markers that help users locate the fingerprint sensor, and the ability to make contactless transactions without PINs or signatures.

US tech giants fight Indian telcos’ bid to regulate internet services, pay for network usage

airtel business plan

Global technology giants are pushing back against attempts by India’s telecom networks to bring internet services under stricter regulation, rejecting arguments that such measures are necessary to create a “level playing field” and address national security concerns.

The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC), a powerful industry body that represents Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix and Spotify, has forcefully argued against inclusion of the so-called over-the-top (OTT) services in the proposed regulatory framework (PDF) for telecom operators.

In a submission to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the AIC said there are fundamental differences in technology, operations and functionality between OTT services and traditional telecom operations.

OTT services operate on the application layer, while telecom service providers (TSPs) operate on the network layer. Unlike TSPs, OTT providers do not have rights to acquire spectrum, obtain numbering resources or interconnect with the public switched telephone network.

“OTT communication services are not substitutes of traditional telecom services,” the AIC wrote in its submission, noting that OTT services offer additional functionalities like group chats, voice notes and in-app content sharing.

Including internet services in the new framework could violate net neutrality principles and harm consumer interests, the AIC warned.

“At the outset, we would like to submit that OTT communication services are already regulated under a host of laws, including as ‘intermediaries’ under the IT Act and the rules and regulations issued thereunder. Thus, concerns that OTT communication services operate in an ecosystem where there is no regulatory oversight are unfounded,” the AIC also stated.

The coalition argues there are already enough regulations in India that oversee OTT services, including requirements for interception, content takedown, incident reporting and user grievance redressal under the IT Act and related rules.

This resistance comes in response to a coordinated push by India’s top telecom operators — Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea — to bring OTT services under a new authorization framework.

Jio, India’s largest telecom operator with more than 475 million subscribers, and other telco operators have recommended that OTT providers contribute to network development costs based on their traffic consumption, turnover and user base.

The telcos’ push comes as they grapple with low average revenue per user — of approximately $2 per month. Having collectively invested $19 billion in 5G airwaves last year , the carriers are seeking regulatory intervention to boost margins.

The AIC disputed claims of OTT services “free-riding” on telecom infrastructure. Jeff Paine, AIC’s managing director, said that OTT services have driven increased data consumption and revenues for carriers.

The AIC also argued that regulating OTT services under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 would go beyond its intended scope. The coalition noted that when the Act was introduced in Parliament, the telecoms minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, clarified that “OTT has been regulated by the IT Act of 2000 and continues to be regulated by the IT Act” and also stipulated “there is no coverage of OTT in the new telecom bill passed by the Parliament.”

The debate in India mirrors similar discussions in South Korea and Europe , where network operators are also pushing for contributions from large tech companies.

Airtel Rs 979 prepaid plan offers unlimited calling, 168GB data and over 20 OTT apps for 84 days: Full details

Airtel has made a quiet change to its rs 979 prepaid plan, removing the popular free amazon prime membership benefit..

Airtel prepaid plan

Update: Airtel has confirmed to financialexpress.com that there’s been no change in the content offerings for the Rs 979 plan. The Rs 979 plan was priced at Rs 839 before the recent tariff hike and did not include Amazon Prime. After the tariff hike, the same has been priced at Rs 979 along with additional OTT offers that were not included earlier. The plan that did have Amazon Prime was priced at Rs 999 before the price hike and is now valued at Rs 1,199. It is also bundled with 20+ OTT.

Bharti Airtel has made a quiet change to its Rs 979 prepaid plan, removing the popular free Amazon Prime membership benefit. Instead of offering Prime, Airtel now provides access to over 20 OTT (over-the-top) apps, including Sony LIV, Lionsgate Play, Fancode, Eros Now, hoichoi, ManoramaMAX, and more, through its Airtel Xstream Play service.

airtel business plan

New OTT benefits on Rs 979 plan

Previously, the Rs 979 plan came with a free Amazon Prime membership for 56 days. Now, with the recent changes, customers will receive access to a wide range of OTT apps for a longer period of 84 days. This shift highlights Airtel’s focus on expanding its content offerings, giving users a variety of streaming options beyond Amazon Prime.

Reliance Jio Rs 355 prepaid plan

For those who valued the Amazon Prime benefit, Airtel has moved it to higher-tier plans. The membership is now only available with plans offering 2.5GB of data per day or more, such as the Rs 1,199 and Rs 838 plans. Previously, users could enjoy this benefit with the Rs 979 plan, which provided 2GB of data per day. This change indicates Airtel’s strategy to encourage users to opt for more expensive plans to access premium benefits like Amazon Prime.

One of the key changes with the Rs 979 plan is the increased validity of the new OTT offerings. While the Amazon Prime membership was valid for only 56 days, the new OTT bundle is available for the entire 84-day validity of the plan. This ensures that users can enjoy continuous entertainment throughout the duration of their plan.

Despite the removal of Amazon Prime, Airtel continues to offer the same core benefits with the Rs 979 plan. These include unlimited 5G data, unlimited calling, and 100 daily SMS.

Comparison with Jio

In contrast, Reliance Jio has also made adjustments to its prepaid plans. Recently, Jio reintroduced its Rs 999 prepaid plan, which now offers 2GB of data per day for 98 days. This plan includes unlimited 5G data, 100 SMS per day, and unlimited voice calling. However, the total data has been reduced compared to its previous offering, which provided 3GB per day.

Jio has come up with a half-month recharge plan which offers unlimited 5G data- providing 2 GB of 4G data per day, along with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS per day for the next 14 days.

Jio

Plan details and benefits

The new Rs 198 prepaid recharge plan will provide 2 GB of 4G data per day, along with unlimited voice calling, and 100 SMS per day which will be a validity of 14 days.

India Tv - jio

In addition to these basic features, the plan will further include access to Jio’s suite of apps, which will include JioTV, JioCloud and JioCinema, which will enhance the overall value for users.

Comparisons with the existing Jio plans

While the Rs 198 recharge plan is the cheapest and has been offered by Jio for unlimited 5G data, it comes with 14-day validity which may require users to certainly recharge more frequently.

For users who are looking for a monthly plan with similar benefits, Jio offers a Rs 349 plan with unlimited 5G data, 2 GB of 4G data per day, and a 28-day validity.

Recharging the Rs 198 plan twice a month would cost Rs 396- which is slightly more than the existing Rs 349 plan- making it a little expensive option for those who prefer a longer validity period.

How to recharge the Jio number with the new plan?

  • Users can recharge with the Rs 198 plan through the MyJio app or other prepaid recharge platforms.
  • However, it is important to note that platforms like Google Pay, Paytm, and PhonePe may charge an additional convenience fee ranging from Re 1 to Rs 3, while the MyJio app does not impose any extra charges.

Frequently asked questions

What is internet leased line.

A leased line is a dedicated internet connection with fixed and symmetric bandwidth. It enables small, medium, and large businesses to get internet connecting in a secure, reliable, and highly efficient manner, with maximum download capacity, resilience, and uptime. Airtel’s dedicated internet leased line is a private link between companies and the Airtel network. Unlike other connections that multiple users share, an internet leased line connection is exclusive to businesses, ensuring symmetric download and upload speed. It is a high-performance connectivity for modern businesses looking forward to offer seamless connectivity to their large workforce, support remote access to applications, and accelerate cloud adoption. It fuels services like VoIP and scheduled offsite backups, creating room for business growth.

What is Airtel Dedicated Internet for Business?

Airtel Dedicated Internet is a dedicated and high-performance internet connectivity for your business that you do not share with other businesses. It is a secured, always-on connection for large data exchanges, bandwidth-intensive applications, remote and global connectivity.

What is the difference between internet leased line and regular broadband?

Regular broadband is an internet connection that multiple organisations share. Sharing affects the connection’s data security, reliability, speed, and bandwidth, leading to fluctuations during peak hours. On the contrary, internet leased line offers exclusive connectivity to your business with dedicated and symmetric bandwidth, ensuring greater security, reliability, and ultra-fast speed.

What are the different types of internet leased lines?

The different types of internet leased line service are: Fibre leased lines Fibre Leased Lines provide a dedicated symmetric data connection by sending light over fibre optic cables. Fiber-optic technology is known for its exceptional data transfer rates, reliability, and security. Fibre leased lines are frequently employed by businesses with demanding needs for high bandwidth and minimal latency, including multimedia firms, research institutions, and financial organizations. DSL leased lines A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) provides low-bandwidth leased lines. In comparison to fibre leased lines, which are symmetric and non-contended, DSL connections are asymmetric and contended. MPLS leased lines Multi-protocol label switching (MPSL) is a technology for encapsulating data and transferring it from X to Y. You can stick labels on it and then decide on transfers depending on those labels. MPLS is deployed over a leased line circuit, meaning you can obtain an MPLS leased line over cable leased lines, DSL lines, or a combination of both.

What are the features of internet leased lines?

Symmetrical bandwidth Internet leased lines offer symmetrical bandwidth so that download and upload speeds are equal. Uncontended Leased line connections are uncontended, implying that they cannot be shared with other businesses. Point-to-point connectivity Dedicated internet connect two points – ISP and business location.

What is the architecture of leased line?

Leased lines are connected directly with the premises or can also be provided through fibre optic cable. In the case of a fiber optic leased line, it works by sending pulses of light. The transmitted data travels at the speed of light.

How fast is a leased line?

Leased lines often have speeds ranging from 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps. The average speed of a leased line is 2Mbps. However, 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps are becoming more prevalent currently.

How does Airtel Dedicated Internet work?

A leased line is an allocated circuit between two points of communication. It is always switched on and rented for a monthly charge or according to the service provider’s terms. Leased lines are exclusive, allocated, and dedicated. This means that the associated bandwidth is exclusive for business use. They are different from traditional telecommunications technologies, which use and reuse the circuit by switching. They establish a continuous tunnel between the two communication points, allowing data to flow continuously. Airtel’s dedicated leased line connections use the high-capacity, high-speed fibre optics technology. Unlike other connectivity services, it is a closed circuit between the two communication points. The dedicated nature ensures uninterrupted transmission to meet today’s dynamic business needs. It is an always-on service providing a strong and consistent Internet connection and enhancing business operations for bandwidth-hungry applications. Dedicated leased lines also work great for businesses dependent on remote or telecommute workforce.

How can Airtel Dedicated Internet benefit my business’ connectivity needs?

  • High-speed internet up to 100Gbps to for uninterrupted productivity
  • 5% uptime to seamlessly access high-bandwidth applications, irrespective of growing number of users.
  • World-class DDoS protection and built-in firewall to ensure cybersecurity
  • Burstable bandwidth for scalability on the go
  • Easy, non-disruptive installation
  • End-to-end SLAs and guaranteed uptime
  • 24/7 support for seamless troubleshooting and uninterrupted Internet access

What is the reliability and speed of Airtel Dedicated Internet services?

Airtel’s dedicated internet connection is exceptionally reliable, with near-zero latency and 99.5% uptime for any number of users and irrespective of bandwidth-heavy applications. It delivers astonishing speed, ranging from 10Mbps to 100Gbps, for lightning-fast data exchange and access to your applications and resources.

Are Airtel Internet leased line plans customisable to meet my business requirements?

Yes. Airtel offers multiple leased line plans for SMEs, enterprises, government organisations, and global corporations. Choose the plan based on your company size and requirements. You can also choose managed and secured internet solution depending on your requirement.

How can dedicated internet solutions enhance productivity for my enterprise?

Guaranteed high speed, even during peak hours, and symmetric uploads and downloads save significant time and resources. Dedicated internet solutions accelerate your daily operations, improve time-to-market, and frees employees to focus on innovation and other productive tasks. Enhanced security and assured uptime further boost your workforce efficiency.

What is the installation process of Airtel internet leased line service?

Airtel Dedicated Internet installation begins with our network experts conducting a detailed study and extensive site survey to identify your exclusive business needs and help you with a tailored solution. The setup process is quick. Your dedicated internet is up and running in just two weeks.

Can I upgrade my leased line plan as my business grows?

How to set up a leased line?

Before getting a leased line, consider the factors such as the number of users, intensity of usage, and cost.
