Hiring Manager

Westwood Elementary School

18 Mount Olive Road

As an elementary school teacher with 7+ years of experience working with children aged 6-10, I was delighted to see that you were looking for someone like me at Westwood Elementary. During my employment at Little Rock Elementary School, I was able to introduce the same principles of modern education that you base your philosophy on, and boost test scores 12% in my classes, as well as reduce disruptions by 24%, so I would slot right into your methods.

I graduated in Elementary Education from University of Arizona in 2011, before a short internship at the Department of Education. At Little Rock Elementary School, I was responsible for the daily teaching of 80 1-5th graders (I am experienced in managing groups from 3 to 25 at all elementary ages). When working with children I do not use textbooks, but try to introduce solutions that are interesting for children based on the use of modern technology. I obtained a $56,000 grant from the state fund for the purchase of teaching aids and tablets for children. I have started a tradition that spread to the whole school that every second day of the month, we take an educational trip to the museum or a theater, having negotiated it with the local facilities for free. At least once a month we have a ‘Career Day’, where children meet people from different professions to find out about what they do. Over the years, we have had over 50 different professions represented, some multiple times. Thanks to extracurricular activities I organized for four weeks in March, my pupils obtained first place in the State "Keep an open mind" Art competition. By activating students and using multimedia teaching aids, my students' results are on average 25% better than in other classes.

I am convinced that my experience, excellent contact with children and constant desire to develop make me an excellent candidate for the Westwood Elementary. I know that a non-standard and modern approach to education is extremely important to you, which is why I would like to take advantage of your experience and in return offer my ingenuity and readiness to work hard.

I am looking forward to discussing with you how my interactive methods can boost learning behavioral improvements at Westwood Elementary.

Right away you know exactly who you’re dealing with. A thoroughly organized, modern, and effective teacher. She’s staying after school.

The next example is from someone who just qualified, but only has private and babysitting experience in the past.

Westgate Elementary School

1667 Bell Street

I am writing in regards to the Elementary Teacher opening advertised on the Westgate Elementary School website. As your school is recognized as one of the best elementary schools in New York, I was waiting for this opportunity. I would like to transfer proven child care skills from babysitting 60+ children ages 3-14, practical experience in giving private lessons for 45+ children weekly aged 8-14, and strong educational background to start my teaching career with you.

My passion for working with children began in high school when I started working as a babysitter. A natural ability to keep the children's attention, organize their time and explain homework resulted in a two-year internship in the afternoon kid’s club, where I was giving private lessons for 45+ children weekly at the age from 10 to 14, boosting their Math standardized test scores by 16% on average. At the same time I was studying Early Childhood Education at NYU Steinhardt, from where I graduated in 2019 with a 3.8 GPA. Education studies gave me expert knowledge of teaching methodology, and studies of Child Psychology helped me to better understand and shape children's behavior. In two years of giving private lessons, I have had 100% retention rate, and the lowest absence rates amongst all staff, assuring me that I have a natural disposition for working with children.

Given my comprehensive education and broad experience, I am confident I can translate the best parts of working 1-on-1 into classroom settings at Westgate Elementary.

Can we schedule a meeting to discuss what would be the best way to do that?

Here's how to write an elementary teacher cover letter that's just as good:

2. How to Write an Elementary Teacher Cover Letter

1. format your cover letter.

If your margins are unruly, how are you going to take charge of 30 kids? More than reflecting on you as a person, it is more likely just to discourage someone from reading further. Don’t fall at the first hurdle.

This is how not to lose marks on your cover letter format :

  • ‘Align Left’ all contents.
  • Set even margins on all sides, 1-inch minimum.
  • Match the font to your resume font —no smaller than 10pt.
  • Use 1.15 line spacing. Leave a line between each section, and between paragraphs.
  • One page is the most desirable length for your cover letter .

Check once again at the end—formatting can mess up mid-way, especially if you’re copy and pasting from your resume. Once you have set the play area, let’s see what to include in your cover letter .

2. Address Your Elementary Teacher Cover Letter

Add your contact details at the very top of the cover letter address area , making it identical to your resume header . Do not omit your physical address or phone number. Underneath, write down the date and city, and below, the details of the principal, or whoever is dealing with your application.

Check against our template:

[ Phone Number ]

Expert Hint: Don’t put your address info at the top and bottom of an email cover letter . Just add your phone and email.

3. Say Which Job You’re Applying To and Introduce Yourself

Address the principal by their proper title and surname. Start your cover letter by clearly stating you are applying for an elementary teacher position, and provide your most significant teaching achievement to convince them to keep reading. Then link it back to what you can do for them

You can just replace the [blanks] with your information:

Elementary Teacher Cover Letter Sample: Introduction

Dear  [Proper Title] [Surname] :

I would like to apply to the  [Elementary Teacher]  position at  [School Name] . During my  [X] + years’ teaching background at  [Past Institution Names] , I have managed to  [your most significant teaching achievement] . I believe I can translate this performance into  [boosting test scores/improving behavior/etc.]   at  [School Name] .

Expert Hint: The Bureau for Labour Statistics reports there are over 1.5 million Kindergarten and Elementary School Teachers in the US, but predicts there will only be 3%, or 53 thousand more jobs in 10 years’ time. Polish your elementary teacher resume, and you will be in that group.

4. Make Your Case

The first paragraph was for attention. The second paragraph is for convincing. You should focus on the positive outcomes you can achieve for your students, parents and other staff alike. Address the needs and values of the school—check their website in-depth, and write a targeted cover letter that isn’t generic .

Try and quantify what you achieve. Score improvements, lower number of incidents, higher satisfaction. Think of the innovative things that you tried that really took on, and include them as well.

Sample Cover Letter For Elementary Teacher Jobs: Middle Paragraph

I obtained my  [Degree Name]   from  [College Name]   with a  [X]  GPA, where I developed a special interest in  [discuss relevant coursework if light on work experience] . At  [Previous School Name]  I have been responsible for  [number] [age groups]  students, in classes of up to  [number] . I believe in   [a modern approach to education/interactive learning/etc.]   therefore I have  [obtained funding/bought/budgeted for] [learning aids] , which allowed the students to  [improve at something] . I am invested not only in the learning, but the development of children which is why  [I gained certifications/studied child psychology/etc.]  and can help  [School Name]  improve its  [something they want to improve] .

Expert Hint: If you are really scant for experience and achievements, you can opt to bolster your package with some additional certifications on your resume and elementary teacher cover letter, and get a CPR certification from the American Heart Association .

5. Explain Your Motivation

The worst thing that could happen is when you are suddenly too modern, too innovative, and too progressive to be employed by some schools. Let them know you respect them too by finding out what is important to them and discussing those values and goals.

Make them feel like it’s the only school you’re applying to.

Fill in the [blanks]:

Joining  [School Name]  as an Elementary Teacher would be a benefit to me, the kids, and the school, as it would allow me to channel my  [special skills]  in order to  [achieve something for the kids or the school] .

6. Request An Interview & Leave a Call To Action

Signing off your cover letter the wrong way can send it straight to the bin. Being too friendly, too enthusiastic, or too sure of yourself can all play to your disadvantage. Be bold and explicitly ask for an interview, underlining it with your strongest argument or achievement.

Then sign off formally, l ike this:

When would be a good time to have a call or a meeting to discuss how my  [your best, most relevant skill/their most important requirement][skills/experience]  can help   [Target School Name]   achieve  [something important to this school] ?

Best Regards,

One more cover letter tip . Use active voice and action verbs on your cover letter. It means “20 students were mentored by me” becomes “I mentored 20 students.” The latter feels more impressive.

How to format an elementary teacher cover letter

A cover letter is your chance to connect with a potential employer. In it, you can expand on your resume , introduce yourself to the hiring manager and show them exactly why you’re the perfect fit for the job. That’s a lot for one page, but it can be done!

It all begins with the correct cover letter format .

Use the standard business format for your elementary teacher cover letter

A cover letter is a business letter, so use a traditional business letter to guide your elementary teacher cover letter format.

Here are some tips for formatting your cover letter for an elementary school teacher job:

  • Start with a professionally designed cover letter template .
  • Use only acceptable fonts, such as Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial in 11 or 12-point size. Unusual fonts like Comic Sans tend to confuse applicant tracking systems (ATS) that employers use to scan cover letters and resumes.
  • Create one and ¼-inch margins on all sides of your document.
  • Use single spacing with double spacing between paragraphs.
  • Align all text to the left margin throughout your elementary teacher cover letter.
  • Be concise. Your letter should contain 500 words maximum and fit on one page.

As our elementary teacher sample cover letter shows, you’ll want to include the following in your cover letter:

  • A header with your name, city, state, ZIP code, telephone number and a link to your professional website or LinkedIn profile.
  • The recipient’s address and contact information.
  • A greeting, like “Dear Alice Walters,” “Dear Principal Smith,” or “Dear HR Department.”
  • An engaging opening paragraph introducing yourself, your experience as an elementary teacher and your job-relevant skills, such as adaptability, empathy and lesson planning.
  • Two or three body paragraphs that describe your achievements like “In the last year, I have successfully increased student test scores by 15% and implemented engaging activities that resulted in a 20% improvement in classroom participation.”
  • A closing paragraph with an invitation to connect. For example,

“In closing, I am excited to bring my passion for education, dedication to student success, and exceptional teaching skills to your school. I am confident I have the qualifications and experience to positively impact your students and school community. I look forward to meeting you soon to discuss my qualifications for this position. Thank you for your time and consideration.”

  • A simple but professional signoff, like “Best regards” or “Sincerely.”

How to write an impressive cover letter for an elementary school teacher job

Start with a persuasive introduction.

Don’t waste a potential employer’s time with a generic letter. Think of your elementary teacher cover letter introduction as an elevator pitch and draw them in immediately with a compelling opening paragraph. Set the tone by telling the hiring manager why you’re interested in the job and highlight why you’re the best candidate. Do so with enthusiasm and confidence in your abilities, and incorporate keywords from the job description to pass the ATS test and pique the hiring manager’s interest.

Here’s an example:

“When I saw your job ad for an elementary teacher experienced with diverse student populations and innovative teaching methods, I could not believe how much the job description matches my skills and work experience, so I jumped at the chance to apply. In my 10 years as an elementary teacher, I’ve worked with students with disabilities and advanced students in public and private institutions. In addition to traditional elementary teaching techniques, I’m experienced in project-based learning, gamification, personalized learning and inquiry-based methods.

Use accomplishments to showcase why you’re an excellent fit for the role

As you can see in our elementary teacher sample cover letter, the body of your cover letter should paint an in-depth picture of your career history and relevant skills while offering insight into your interests and values. But a cookie-cutter cover letter won’t pass muster. Make yours shine with measurable achievements .

Here’s what we mean:

“As a 4th grade teacher in my current school, I instituted a reading program that increased student test scores by 15% and implemented collaborative activities that resulted in a 35% improvement in classroom participation. I have also received recognition from my colleagues and school administration for my innovative teaching methods and have maintained a 98% parent satisfaction rate for the last five years”

Pro tip: Use action verbs like “demonstrate,” “prepare,” “nurture,” “engage” and “motivate” for impact.

Close with an invitation

Follow the lead of our elementary teacher cover letter example and use the final paragraph of your cover letter to reiterate your interest in the job. Then, thank the hiring manager for their time and invite them to connect.

For example: “I am excited about the opportunity to bring my passion for teaching and my proven track record of success to make a positive impact and contribute to the growth of the fifth grade students in The Crispin School. Thank you for considering my application. Please call me at your earliest convenience to talk about how we might work together.”

Pair your elementary teacher cover letter with a matching resume

Elementary teacher cover letter faq, how to write a cover letter for an elementary teacher position.

Your cover letter needs to give the hiring manager a sense of who you are, clearly convey why you want this particular job and illustrate why you’re the best match for the position.

Here are six tips for writing an exceptional elementary teacher cover letter:

  • Review the job requirements against your qualifications and then draw parallels in your letter.
  • Detail relevant work achievements using numbers and percentages where possible.
  • Highlight notable technical and interpersonal skills , while explaining how you could apply them to the role.
  • Show that you’re serious and enthusiastic about the job, school, or institution by discussing what excites you about them.
  • Before you send off your cover letter, proofread it.
  • Use a professional cover letter template for an elementary teacher position and check out elementary teacher cover letter examples to get inspired.

How should I address my elementary school cover letter?

Use the hiring manager’s name in your cover letter salutation. Write out their name in full (for example, “Dear Susan Wong,”) and use titles like “Miss” or “Mrs” only if you are certain of the person’s gender. If you don’t know the hiring manager’s name, do some research to try to find it — check the school’s website, LinkedIn and other professional networking sites.

If you still can’t locate it, then use “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Principal Stern.” You can also address your letter to a whole department — “Dear HR Department” or “Dear School Administrators,” for example — if it’s more appropriate. Whatever you do, don’t use an outdated, impersonal salutation like “To Whom It May Concern” and never use informal greetings like “Hello John,” or “Hi!”

How do you start a cover letter for an elementary teacher?

Start your elementary teacher cover letter with a bang to encourage the hiring manager to keep reading. Get a bit creative to keep the first three to four sentences intriguing: include an anecdote that highlights your enthusiasm for the role or passion for elementary education; reference a unique fact about the institution to show you’ve researched them; or drop the name of a respected colleague from the school.

Is it necessary to tailor my elementary school teacher cover letter for each school I apply to?

We recommend tailoring your elementary school teacher cover letter for each school you apply to. Researching the institution and understanding its values, mission, and needs allows you to highlight your relevant experiences and skills that align with the school’s requirements.

How do you write an elementary teacher cover letter with no experience?

No experience? No problem! Here are some tips for writing a professional elementary teacher cover letter with no experience

  • Focus on your education, soft skills such as communication, organization, time management, and your passion for teaching.
  • Highlight your relevant volunteer work, part-time gigs, coursework, certifications, or field experiences working with children.
  • Emphasize your strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Showcase your enthusiasm and dedication to teaching.
  • Explain how you will bring creativity and innovation into the classroom.

25 Teacher Cover Letters Examples To Help You Get Hired

Your guide to a killer cover letter that will get you that interview.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples

Whether you are sending out resumes hoping to land your first teaching job or looking to shift to a new school or district, one fact remains the same: All the best credentials, experience, and passion will go unnoticed without a strong cover letter. The main rule? Sell yourself the way a publicist would. Cover letters aren’t a time for modesty. They’re a time to highlight your accomplishments and make your passion for teaching known. Below you’ll find our tips for creating the best cover letter possible and our top teacher cover letter and CV examples.

3 top tips for crafting a teacher CV or cover letter:

Keep it short and sweet..

You’ve only got about 30 seconds to capture a hiring director’s attention, so start with what we call “the elevator pitch.” Imagine you have the time between the elevators closing on one floor and opening again on another floor to sell yourself. Instead of rehashing everything on your resume, use the space to craft a paragraph or two that will convince them you are a standout candidate and are worth moving on to the next step.

Emphasize why you’re a great match.

Read the job description and find the overlap between the skills you bring to the table and the skills they need. If the job description calls for certain qualities or uses specific language, repeat them in your cover letter! The ultimate goal for your cover letter is to say, “You’ve got a problem? I’m the ideal person to solve it.” Be professional and use concrete examples.

Individualize!

Tailor each and every cover letter to fit the specific school, district, and job for which you’re applying. Research the school and its culture. That way, you can address their expectations and also use specific examples of achievements in your history to show why you’re the right candidate for the position.

5 Steps for the Perfect Elementary Teacher Cover Letter

You've got a clear picture now of what a good cover letter looks like, and you're ready to write your own !

Just remember, it's about following easy steps to make a letter that shows who you are.

Let’s get started:

#1. Put Contact Information in the Header

Starting your elementary teacher cover letter right means you need to include important contact details at the top. Just like you would write it on your resume , use the header of your cover letter.

Here's what to include:

  • Full Name. Your name should be at the top.
  • Job Title. Make sure it matches the teaching position you're applying for. With many applications for different roles at the same school, being clear is important—you want to make sure the principal knows if you’re a music teacher or a chemistry teacher.
  • Email Address. Choose a professional email. A good format is your first and last name, like [email protected] , and avoid quirky ones like [email protected] .
  • Phone Number. List your number here. If the job is in another country, include the international dialing code.
  • Location. Your city and state or country are enough. If you're open to remote work or relocating for the job, make that clear.
  • Relevant Links (optional). You can add links to your LinkedIn or any other professional websites you have.

Next, you'll need the hiring manager's contact information :

  • School or Company Name. Write the name of the school you're applying to. If you’re applying to a privately owned organization, the same rule applies.
  • Hiring Manager's Name. Try to find out who this is. Look at the job listing or the school's website—nine times out of ten, it’s the principal.
  • Location. Add the city and country where the organization is based. You can also include the street name and number if you want to be more specific or it has more than one campus location.
  • Date of Writing (optional). For an added touch of professionalism, add the date you’re writing your cover letter.

#2. Address the Hiring Manager

After you've included all the important contact information, it's time to choose the right greeting for the person who'll be reading your letter.

Forget the outdated "To Whom It May Concern." A more personal greeting starts things off on a friendlier note.

First, do a little research. Check the job posting, the school's website, or their LinkedIn to find the name of the person hiring for the elementary teacher position.

Use formal titles like "Mr." or "Ms." followed by their last name. If you're not sure about their gender or marital status, just use their full name. For example:

  • Dear Mr. Johnson,
  • Dear Alex Johnson,

If you can't find the hiring manager's information, direct your letter to the department or the school in general.

  • Dear School X,
  • Dear Hiring Team,
  • Dear Human Resources,
  • Dear School Staff,

#3. Write an Eye-Catching Opening Statement

School principals and hiring committees often only take a short time to look over a job application before deciding if they should read it in depth.

To catch their attention, you need to make a strong impression with the opening paragraph of your cover letter right away.

Begin by introducing yourself and explaining why you're interested in the specific elementary teacher role. A bit of enthusiasm for teaching or the school itself can make the hiring team curious to know more about you.

If you have teaching experience, start your cover letter with a highlight from your career or a skill that makes you a great choice for the role.

It's really helpful to learn about the school beforehand. The more you know, the better you can show that you'd be a great fit. This tells the hiring team you're not just sending out your resume to every school, but that you're specifically interested in their school.

But remember to keep it short. Your aim is to get the hiring team interested, so they'll want to read on.

#4. Use the Cover Letter Body for the Details

The body of your cover letter as an aspiring elementary teacher is your chance to dive deep into why you're a great fit for the teaching position.

Here, it’s a mistake to just repeat what's on your resume . Use this part of your cover letter to expand on how you've achieved specific successes in your teaching career or to explain any gaps in your employment or how you acquired a key skill for teaching.

Use this section to highlight achievements that show you're perfect for the teaching role. Look at the job advertisement for clues. For example, if the ad emphasizes "innovative teaching methods," you might talk about how you've successfully implemented creative lesson plans in a past role that significantly improved student engagement and learning outcomes.

Tailoring your cover letter to the specific school and role is crucial. If the school is known for its focus on STEM education, discuss how you excel at integrating technology into your lesson plans and give an example. If the job ad mentions a need for "strong classroom management," share a story about how you effectively handled a challenging classroom situation.

Being knowledgeable about the school you're applying to can set you apart. If you're impressed by their approach to holistic education or their award-winning arts program, mention it. This shows that you resonate with their educational philosophy and goals.

Don't forget to express your excitement. Make it clear you're thrilled at the prospect of joining their team and confident in your ability to make a positive impact at their school.

Not sure how long your cover letter should be? Read this article to find out!

#5. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Concluding your elementary teacher cover letter effectively can really make a lasting impression. This is your chance to leave the hiring committee with a positive final thought about your application.

Wrap up your cover letter by reiterating your strongest points. Quickly remind them why you're the right person for this teaching role, whether you can engage diverse learners or your proven track record of enhancing student performance through innovative teaching methods.

Next, encourage the hiring manager to take the next step, like arranging an interview. This demonstrates your initiative and eagerness to progress in the hiring process.

Finish with a professional sign-off. Close your cover letter with a respectful and straightforward line, followed by your full name.

Please feel free to contact me at my email or phone number to set up an interview. I am keen to explore my application further at a time that suits you.

Warm regards,

Jennifer Donnally

And, if "Warm regards" feels too informal, here are some other options:

  • Best regards,
  • Thank you for considering my application,

Dear Ms. Williams,

I came across the teaching position at Mount High School and was immediately drawn to apply. As someone who is passionate about education and has a wealth of experience as a teacher, I would be an excellent addition to your team.

That's how you do it. Now, let's move on and show you how to write a teacher cover letter like that.

What to Include in a Teacher Cover Letter

You've created a great teacher resume , and now it's time to write a cover letter for teaching positions to attach alongside. Remember that it is still a formal letter, so you need to follow a certain cover letter layout .

Here’s what you should include in teacher cover letters:

  • your contact information, including the date you're writing it
  • the school’s (addressee’s) details
  • a cover letter greeting (e.g., Dear Principal Johnson)
  • an opening cover letter statement that grabs their attention
  • a short paragraph on why you’re perfect for the school
  • a short paragraph on why the teaching position is perfect for you
  • a closing cover letter statement that seals the deal
  • complimentary close (e.g., Regards, Sincerely) and your name
  • a postscript

Here, we’re following our recommended structure on the elements of the perfect cover letter for teaching jobs. To read more about the method behind our madness, see this article: What to Include in a Cover Letter

1. Address Your Teaching Cover Letter

A teaching cover letter begins at the top with the cover letter heading area . This is where you’ll put your personal information. Its look and design may vary depending on the cover letter template that you use. Go for the design that you used for your resume.

Your Details

First, add and left-align your contact info at the top of the cover letter. Must-haves include:

  • your full name
  • email address
  • and phone number

An optional item is your mailing address.

Inserting the date of writing is necessary on any formal letter, such as a teacher cover letter.

Addressee’s Details

Next, add the addressee. Personalize it by adding the name of the superintendent or principal. Follow that with the school or academy you’re applying to and its address.

Here’s what the finished cover letter address area could look like:

example of how to include an address on a cover letter

Not addressing your cover letter correctly is just as detention-worthy as not including one at all. Make sure you get yours right, whether it’s a teaching assistant cover letter, substitute teacher cover letter, or other such letters of interest: How to Address a Cover Letter

2. Open Your Cover Letter for a Teacher Eloquently

Knowing how to start a cover letter for teachers is super important to get right, as its location gets the most eye time.

On your teaching cover letter, call the principal or superintendent by name. Something like “ Dear Principal Jackson ” works just perfectly for a cover letter greeting , but you can also segue from the formality in the address area by calling them by their first name: “Dear Jacqueline.”

Now, what about that “ Dear ” part? Dear is one of the best cover letter salutations, but there are alternatives. Read: How to Start a Cover Letter

Introductory Statement

Like the first line in a well-written novel, the opening paragraph should hook the principal immediately in a way that makes them want to hear more.

Let’s look at an example of a great elementary teacher cover letter opening:

How's that?

The sample teacher cover letter introduction is written to the school, specifically (notice the school's name mentioned). It also works because it gives them an inkling of why you'd be the perfect teaching addition to the department.

Pro Tip : As you called out their name in the address, mention the school’s name in the opening paragraph, as well. It feels more personalized and assures the principal that they’re reading a dedicated cover letter.

For other ways to go about your introductory statement, see: How to Write the Perfect Cover Letter

3. Describe the Perfect Partnership in the Teacher Cover Letter Middle Part

Time to sell them on why you’re the perfect teaching candidate out of that stack of 250 others , the way your best pupils perform in the school fundraiser.

But don’t worry. The next two paragraphs give you plenty of real estate to make your case. Though they’re opposites, these sections have a symbiotic, yin-yang-type relationship, like a compass and protractor.

Why You’re Perfect for Them

You’ve got them hooked. Time to reel them in with your teacher cover letter. Show them how you are the perfect fit for the school and faculty by exhibiting your most significant teaching achievements.

Here’s what an applicant might say on a sample school teacher cover letter:

See that? With that paragraph, you show that your acquired skills and experience would make you the ideal new hire for the teaching job offered.

Pro Tip : Remember to use keywords on your resume to ensure that it’s tailored. Add them to your teaching cover letter, as well. Oh, and make sure you use the best cover letter fonts so they can read it!

Why They’re Perfect for You

You told them why you’re the best possible future faculty member, so now it’s time to explain why this school is the perfect choice for you:

How about that? You praised the learning institution and explained why they are the center of your educational universe—who can resist that?

We’ve got a wealth of tips on these two central paragraphs and on writing a teacher cover letter that will let you stand out: 35+ Successful Cover Letter Tips, Advice & Guidelines

Pro Tip : Say you want to apply at a school, but there are no academic jobs listed. This is when you send what’s called a letter of interest for teaching positions, also known as a letter of inquiry.

4. Add a Compelling & Strong Finish to Your Cover Letter for Teaching Positions

You started off strong, and you kept that momentum going. Now, don’t quit just yet—it’s time to summon a second wind and cross that finish line in first place with a powerful closing statement.

Closing Sentence

This is the right moment to reiterate your value as a new hire.

Use a closing paragraph in your teacher cover letter to sum up briefly:

See that? You bring it to a satisfying end by summarizing your cover letter for teachers and then leaving the ball in their court.

Complimentary Close

Add a closing sentiment and your name, and then you can let out a sigh of contentment at your accomplishment, like one of your kids when they finally finish their homework for a three-day weekend.

Here’s how easy that is:

Not much to it, right? That closing sentiment (“ Sincerely ” in this case) is called a complimentary close (or complimentary closing), which is then followed by your name to end the cover letter.

Closing strong on a cover letter is just as critical as an attention-grabbing beginning. Read this for more examples: How to End a Cover Letter

5. Don't Forget to Add a Postscript to Your Teacher's Cover Letter

Adding a P.S., though unnecessary, is a great hack when writing a cover letter. Every great teacher cover letter should include a postscript.

Let me show you what it is:

What do you think? A P.S. (postscript) at the bottom of your cover letter always draws the attention of the reader, even if they don’t read the rest of it. It’s a clever way to get one last word in edgewise before they finish.

Key Takeaway

After this brief lesson, you know well what everyone needs to know before they start writing their cover letters for teachers. And as you can see, writing them is certainly not as complicated as you thought—and definitely nowhere near as tough as the magic you’ll perform daily on the job.

Remember to follow these key points for a successful teaching cover letter:

  • Start with a bang : Your opening statement on your cover letter is important because it’ll determine if the principal reads on.
  • Show you belong together : Use the majority of the body area to show that you’re a perfect fit for the school and they’re the ideal workplace for you.
  • Finish strong : You held their attention till the final bell, but use a strong ending so they’ll be sure to move on to your resume and an interview.

Now, just send your application and prepare for the interview!

The Perfect Structure for an Elementary Teacher Cover Letter

When it comes to writing an exceptional cover letter as an elementary teacher, establishing a detailed structure is vital. A cover letter can make a huge difference after all.

A well-defined structure will ensure it’s easy to follow and understand . This not only helps in organizing your thoughts coherently but also in representing a professional image to your potential employers.

The ideal structure should discuss the following:

  • Introduction : Start your intro with a warm, professional greeting. Mention the position you are applying for, then briefly state how you learned about the job opportunity. Make sure to communicate your excitement for teaching young minds in a sentence.
  • Body : Highlight one or two unique initiatives or experiences you bring to the table, such as introducing a “Creative Curriculum Design” or “Literary Character Days.” Also, share an example that summarizes your passion for the role.
  • Conclusion : Reaffirm how much you’d like to contribute to their educational institution and express gratitude for the consideration. Sign off with a professional and courteous closing.

By shaping your cover letter according to this structure, ensure each point portrays the fresh perspectives that you are prepared to bring to the role.  For a well-written example, study the Elementary Teacher cover letter sample below.

How to Show Off Your Classroom Management Skills

Any teacher worth their salt needs to be able to control and organize their students . That’s why your classroom management skills must be communicated in both your cover letter and resume.

Why is adding these types of skills so important for a cover letter?

Simply enough, it shows that you can:

  • Create a nurturing environment
  • Manage students behaviors

By mentioning your management skills you’ll be able to give insight into how well you can handle typical childhood behaviors and how you can foster an environment that encourages young learners.

Some management skills and expertise that you can list include:

  • Inclusive teaching
  • Positive reinforcement
  • Conflict resolution
  • Community building
  • Promotion of self-regulation

Here’s an example of how you can include these skills in the body of your letter:

In my previous role, I actively fostered community building by organizing group projects and peer mentoring, which not only nurtured a harmonious environment but also minimized conflicts. I consistently implemented positive reinforcement strategies, celebrating students’ achievements and encouraging a culture of recognition and appreciation. My commitment to conflict resolution empowered students to navigate disagreements constructively, promoting a respectful and collaborative classroom atmosphere.

Elementary Teacher Skills to Set Your Cover Letter Apart

Many teachers are extremely well-rounded and if you have some out-of-the-ordinary skills then you can seem like a unique candidate .

Certain skills that are used in the classroom nowadays can be fostered outside an educational setting.

For example, a hobby of yours or your experience with your own children can be used while working as an Elementary Teacher, which is why you can also add them to your cover letter.

Review the following ideas that can show that you have a unique skill set.

If you want to further prove your distinct talents , a certificate can prove that you’re qualified in any of the following areas.

Storytelling Ability

Detail how your storytelling has been used in your teaching methodology to enhance student engagement and comprehension.

In my previous role, I initiated a ‘Storytelling Friday’. I would weave elements of our week’s lessons into a vibrant story, incorporating puppets and visual aids to engage the students and reinforce the learning objectives in a fun and memorable way.

Outdoor Learning Initiatives

Highlight any outdoor learning initiatives you have mastered, and how they fostered a dynamic, hands-on learning environment.

I developed an outdoor learning program, incorporating nature walks and scavenger hunts to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world while tying in elements of science and geography curricula.

Listing Yoga Skills for Your Elementary Teacher Cover Letter

Share how you’ve incorporated yoga and mindfulness practices into your classroom routine, perhaps starting the day with a brief session to help students focus.

I integrated short yoga breaks between lessons, teaching students simple poses and breathing exercises to help them refocus and re-energize, promoting a calm and focused classroom environment.

Mention Your Expertise with Advanced Teaching Equipment

Classroom technology keeps advancing, and a first-time Elementary Teacher should know exactly how to manage different tools to enhance the educational experience.

In your cover letter, you should bring up the various teaching tools you are familiar with and any training or coursework you have completed. It will show that you are adaptable and modern.

Apart from explaining how you’ve used technology in the past, you can also explain how you plan to use it in the future .

Some educational technology includes:

  • Interactive whiteboards
  • Learning management systems
  • 3D printers
  • Student response systems
  • Document cameras

These tools not only show that you can work in a classroom but also help students who learn from home.

In my future classroom, I envision leveraging a variety of advanced teaching equipment such as VR tools to create immersive learning experiences and utilizing digital assessment tools to foster a responsive and adaptive learning environment. Additionally, I am eager to explore the educational potential of 3D printers to bring creativity and hands-on learning to the forefront of my teaching approach.

Elementary Teacher Cover Letter Sample a.k.a. Application Letter

What is the first thing you notice about this elementary teacher cover letter sample? Is it the color that is tastefully incorporated within the header and contact information? Now you might ask who cares about color in an elementary application letter.

I'll tell you who cares! The hiring administrator who has become bored with looking at stock cover letters cares. It is important that your application letter grabs the reader's attention and formatting and style is a great way to do this.

This elementary teacher application letter / cover letter will jump out at the reader immediately and should entice them to focus their attention to read on.

Teachers Resume Writing Process

Though the color used within this example cover letter may have gained the reader's attention initially, it is the content that will ultimately sell the aspiring elementary educator to the school.

Donna-Marie's education, years of classroom experience, teaching skills, and greatest strengths are laid out in an easy to read manner, prompting the school administrator to view her matching elementary resume.

She has used her cover letter as an opportunity to discuss more in depth the areas of her teaching style that she couldn't in her resume. This is where you can really introduce yourself and your teaching personality to the potential school.

Find out how you can effectively target your cover letter to a school's needs .

You will also notice that she has addressed the letter to a specific person – the superintendent. Always strive to address your cover letter to a named individual. Using "To whom it may concern" is very vague and makes the reader think you've just sent out your resume and cover letter blindly to a whole bunch of different schools without caring to properly target your documents to the specific position. So, you can make a great first impression by addressing your cover letter to the hiring manager by name.

Dear Mrs. Knoles:

I am pleased to present my resume to you for consideration as an Elementary School Teacher with the Best School District. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education, and a state of New York teaching license. With over 15 years of classroom experience, and the desire to provide all students with an excellent education, I am confident in my ability to be a valuable asset to your school district.

As my resume will demonstrate, my teaching career has been geared toward the empowerment of elementary school children. I have a strong passion to educate young minds and help them blossom into well-rounded, responsible, and successful individuals. Throughout the course of my career, I have had wonderful opportunities to teach diverse groups of students, including those with learning disabilities, those who performed at grade level, and those who were gifted/exceptional. As a result, I have become proficient at designing creative and stimulating lesson plans, which accommodate multiple intelligences, bring a hands-on approach to learning, and keep students interested and focused.

My greatest strengths include inspiring and motivating students. I actively engage their eager minds by incorporating a variety of manipulatives, enjoyable activities, and cooperative learning projects. In addition, I tailor lesson plans to meet their diverse interests, as well as demonstrate direct connections between the classroom and everyday life. Furthermore, I hold parent and teacher conferences on a regular basis to promote participation in the educational process, reinforce education in the home, and boost students' self-confidence and self-esteem.

I look forward with great anticipation to discussing with you the many ways in which I can make a significant contribution to your educational program. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
