Product features were the first thing I had to come to grips with when I became a product manager. One of my first tasks was to write requirements for product features.

What Are Product Features And How To Define Them

I worked in large teams delivering large and complex products, so as a newbie, I was asked to write up how certain parts of the product would function. It required strong analytical skills and great written communication, as well as a knack for collaborating with those around me to get it right. It was highly involved work, and I would admire the neatness and structured beauty of what I had created. Later, I’d be utterly infuriated that the feature never turned out like that.

This type of detailed work is a great place to start as a PM and a skill set to hone throughout your product management career . However, writing feature requirements is only a small part of the whole product management process, just as a feature is only a small part of the product.

To be a great PM, you need to understand what a feature is, how it fits into the product development hierarchy, and how to manage it through the product development process.

Here’s what I wish I had been told when I started.

What are product features?

A product feature is a thing your product does, and that thing should help solve the overall problem the product is trying to solve.

Take Google, for example, whose mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Search is a product that allows you to easily find information you are looking for, and the search bar — the product feature — allows you to enter the term you are searching for via text input.

This high-profile example shows excellent alignment from vision to product feature with a unified goal of helping to make information universally accessible. It also demonstrates that a product feature should be both tangible and easy to understand.

A product feature is one part of a whole

Have you ever created a product feature with love, care and attention, only to release it to the world and watch it wither and die? When you look back on that experience, I’ll bet you didn’t fully understand the context in which that product feature would operate for users.

Context is critical when you’re developing the feature, too. Understanding where the product feature sits in the product development hierarchy will help you create better features and manage them in the product lifecycle .

Every great product starts with a problem to solve. At the top of the hierarchy is the product vision , from which you derive the strategy that you articulate in your product roadmap . On your roadmap, you should have the themes that you will explore to take you closer to your vision.

Let’s work through an example. Let’s imagine your product vision is to simplify the Friday night takeaway decision by bringing all options into one place. Your strategy is to start with takeaway-only restaurants and you have a beta version of your product out. You are finding that users are struggling with the checkout process and baskets are being abandoned. So you introduce a theme on the roadmap to optimize checkout.

Start by solving customers’ problems

Great! So what next? Well, you need to know more about why people are struggling to check out. Using data and talking to customers should uncover some potential reasons.

Let’s say, for example, that customers are finding it a pain to go get their card details and are abandoning their purchase. Let’s say they’re going to an incumbent competitor because their card details are saved on that platform.

In response, you decide to introduce three features: Apple Pay, the ability to scan a card to autofill the payment details, and the ability to save card details in the account. All of these features are designed to make getting that Friday night takeaway easier.

You will notice that, with the above example, I did not lead with, “Apply pay is awesome, we need to add it!” However, this type of conversation occurs every day among product teams. Understandably so — after all, product features are easier to explain and communicate than a problem.

Sometimes, it seems obvious that some feature is just the thing the product is missing. However, only through rigorous understanding of the problem you’re aiming to solve can you truly be sure — or at least sure enough to develop it — that the feature will be an asset to your user.

How to prioritize product features

There’s never enough time in the day to build all the amazing features product teams want to deliver. So how do you prioritize product features ?

If you approach this challenge by asking yourself which feature is the best one, you won’t get very far. Features are the outcome of a process that starts with the customer problem.

Let’s go back to our previous example: How might you prioritize the features that aim to optimize checkout? Which features would best address the problem?

Apple Pay is probably an easier journey than scanning cards, but that will only work on Apple devices. If the majority of your customers are not using an Apple device, this won’t be the best way to solve the problem.

By approaching it from the viewpoint of the problem, you get a more robust conversation about the reason behind what you are doing, and this can drive better decisions. Talking about trade-offs from the customer’s perspective is far easier than exchanging personal opinions that will inevitably be influenced by bias.

The art of feature definition

The piece I wish I had understood earlier in my career is the amount of work that goes into understanding what is the best thing to build — that, prior to my task of writing up the feature definition, a whole host of work had gone into understanding the problem and trying out potential solutions. Today, I have a growing appreciation for the discipline and skill required to write great product definitions.

Details are important. Ever had a product where you get lost in a loop of error messages? How infuriating!

When it comes to communicating with your engineers and designers about how you expect a feature to work, don’t forget to go over what happens when the user doesn’t do what you thought they would do. Collaboration is key, and the more detail you go into, the more you will pull out before you build.

However, the cost of this is time, so it needs to be a careful balance. It might be worthwhile to ship features quickly and then go back and fix things later. It depends entirely on your product and what your users will accept.

Put simply, a product feature is a thing that your product does. However, if you start by thinking about features, you are going to miss a whole host of things that can make your features successful.

By working down from your product vision and ensuring you keep focusing on the problem you are solving, you will end up with better and more valuable features. Once you really understand the problem your product is trying to solve, everything else falls into place.

When giving presentations, either on a video conference call or in person, your slides, videos and graphics (or lack of them) can be an important element in helping you tell your story or express your idea. This is the first of a series of blog posts that will give you tips and tricks on how to perfect your visual presentations.

Your job as a presenter is to build your idea -- step-by-step -- in the minds of your audience members. One tool to do that is presentation graphics, such as slides and videos.

Why graphics for your presentation?

A common mistake is using slides or videos as a crutch, even if they don’t actually add anything to your presentation. Not all presentations need graphics. Lots of presentations work wonderfully with just one person standing on a stage telling a story, as demonstrated by many TED Talks.

You should only use slides if they serve a purpose: conveying scientific information, art, and things that are hard to explain without pictures. Once you have decided on using slides, you will have a number of decisions to make. We’ll help you with the basics of making a presentation that is, above all, clear and easy to understand. The most important thing to remember here is: less is more.

Less is so much more

You want to aim for the fewest number of slides, the fewest number of photos, the fewest words per slide, the least cluttered slides and the most white space on your slides. This is the most violated slide rule, but it is the secret to success. Take a look at these examples.

As you can see in the above example, you don’t need fancy backgrounds or extra words to convey a simple concept. If you take “Everything you need to know about Turtles”, and delete “everything you need to know about” leaving just “turtles”, the slide has become much easier for your audience to read, and tells the story with economy.

The above example demonstrates that a single image that fills the entire screen is far more powerful than a slide cluttered with images. A slide with too many images may be detrimental to your presentation. The audience will spend more mental energy trying to sort through the clutter than listening to your presentation. If you need multiple images, then put each one on its own slide. Make each image high-resolution and have it fill the entire screen. If the photos are not the same dimensions as the screen, put them on a black background. Don’t use other colors, especially white.

Your slides will be much more effective if you use the fewest words, characters, and pictures needed to tell your story. Long paragraphs make the audience strain to read them, which means they are not paying attention to you. Your audience may even get stressed if you move on to your next slide before they’ve finished reading your paragraph. The best way to make sure the attention stays on you is to limit word count to no more than 10 words per slide. As presentation expert Nancy Duarte says “any slide with more than 10 words is a document.” If you really do need a longer explanation of something, handouts or follow-up emails are the way to go.

Following a “less is more” approach is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your presentation visuals and the impact of your presentation overall. Make sure your visuals add to your presentation rather than distract from it and get your message across.

As you may already know, Microsoft PowerPoint offers a robust feature set for creating presentations. But what kind of tools are useful for actually presenting a slideshow? We'll walk you through several features that can help you engage your audience.

Before it's time for your presentation, you can practice with help from PowerPoint itself. Using Presenter Coach , you can receive feedback as you walk through your slideshow.

To use Presenter Coach, head to the Slide Show tab and select "Rehearse with Coach." When your slideshow opens in full screen mode, click "Start Rehearsing" to begin.

You'll see feedback in real-time as you speak and move through your presentation. You can also view a rehearsal report after you finish that summarizes your time spent practicing, filler words you use, your pace, and more.

Plan ahead for your presentation by practicing with this handy built-in tool.

For a personal touch or a way to communicate visually, consider using a live camera feed. With the Cameo feature, you can put your face and voice front and center during your slideshow.

To add the Cameo object, go to the slide, open the Insert tab, and select "Cameo" in the Camera section.

You can then move or resize the object, see a preview using the camera icon, and customize the object using the Camera Format tab that appears when you select it.

If you add the Cameo element to additional slides, your camera feed continues seamlessly through your presentation.

You may have audience members viewing your PowerPoint presentation who have a hearing impairment or speak a different dialect. With subtitles, you can display every word you say during a presentation in the language of your choice.

To set up the subtitles , go to the Slide Show tab and select the Subtitle Settings drop-down menu. You can then adjust the spoken and subtitle languages, the microphone you want to use, and the placement of the captions.

You can check the box above the menu to Always Use Subtitles or use the Toggle Subtitles icon (Windows) or Closed Caption button (Mac) to turn them on and off during your presentation.

For an excellent way to accommodate your audience during your slideshow, give the subtitles feature a try.

When you present your slideshow, you probably want every tool available to you, and PowerPoint has many. To access those tools like a laser pointer or your presenter notes, check out Presenter View .

To use the feature on Windows, go to the Slide Show tab and check the box for Use Presenter View in the Monitors section of the ribbon. Then, start your presentation as normal. On Mac, simply click "Presenter View" on the Slide Show tab.

To start Presenter View during the slideshow, click the three dots on the bottom left and pick "Show Presenter View."

Next, you'll see a dashboard-like screen with everything you need. On the top left is the current slide, to the right is the next slide, and below that you have your notes.

On the left, you can open additional tools, turn subtitles on or off, black or unblack the show, toggle the camera, and end the show.

Presenter View puts everything you need at your fingertips during your presentation.

These may seem like super basic tools, but they can be quite handy while presenting a slideshow. You can use a pen to circle an image or draw an arrow, a highlighter to call out certain text, or a laser pointer to emphasize parts of a slide.

To access the tools in Presenter View, select the Pen and Laser Pointer Tools icon (pen) below the current slide.

To access the tools without Presenter View, select the Pen and Laser Pointer Tools icon on the bottom left of the slide.

Choose a tool and then use your cursor to control it. For the pen and highlighter, you can also pick a color in the pop-up window.

To "put away" the tool you're using, access it using the steps above and deselect it.

Along with using the tools above for making parts of your presentation stand out, you can take advantage of the Zoom feature. With it, you can zoom in on part of a slide , move around if you like, and then zoom back out.

As of November 2022, this feature is not available in PowerPoint on Mac.

In regular slide show view or Presenter View, select the zoom icon (magnifying glass) on the bottom left.

You'll then see a rectangle on your screen indicating the zoom area. Move that rectangle to the spot you want to enlarge and click.

You can then drag to move around the slide while it's zoomed in. Right-click or use your Escape key to zoom back out to the original view.

Just like giving a speech with index cards for your talking points, notes in PowerPoint are just as beneficial. You can include information you want to highlight or further details for text or images you use.

To add presenter notes to your slideshow, open the notes panel. Either select "Notes" in the status bar or drag up from the bottom of the slide in the PowerPoint window.

Then when it's time to present, use Presenter View to display your notes during the show.

With an update to PowerPoint in 2022, you can also edit your notes while you present. This is a good way to capture additional points you think of while presenting or if an audience question pops up.

Place your cursor in the notes area on the right side and add or remove text. You can also use the buttons at the bottom to increase or decrease the font size.

Having your speaker notes with you during a slideshow is a key element in a successful presentation.

When you finish creating your PowerPoint slideshow , prepare to present it by trying out these features ahead of time. Then, incorporate them into your slideshow where it makes sense. Your audience will be glad you did!

There are two ways you can use presentational features as a reader …

The first way you can use presentational features is to find important information within a text.

You may not have anything specific you need to find details on, but features such as:

  • bullet points
  • boxed and highlighted text
  • headings and subheadings

will direct you towards what the writer thinks is significant .

The second way you can use presentational features is to find specific information within a text.

You will have specific information you will need to find details on, so looking for features such as:

  • subheadings
  • charts or graphs

…will be helpful instead.

They will direct you towards specific areas of a text, and give you clues about where the information you need is located within the text.

The formal presentation of information is divided into two broad categories: Presentation Skills and Personal Presentation .

These two aspects are interwoven and can be described as the preparation, presentation and practice of verbal and non-verbal communication. 

This article describes what a presentation is and defines some of the key terms associated with presentation skills.

Many people feel terrified when asked to make their first public talk.  Some of these initial fears can be reduced by good preparation that also lays the groundwork for making an effective presentation.

A Presentation Is...

A presentation is a means of communication that can be adapted to various speaking situations, such as talking to a group, addressing a meeting or briefing a team.

A presentation can also be used as a broad term that encompasses other ‘speaking engagements’ such as making a speech at a wedding, or getting a point across in a video conference.

To be effective, step-by-step preparation and the method and means of presenting the information should be carefully considered. 

A presentation requires you to get a message across to the listeners and will often contain a ' persuasive ' element. It may, for example, be a talk about the positive work of your organisation, what you could offer an employer, or why you should receive additional funding for a project.

The Key Elements of a Presentation

Making a presentation is a way of communicating your thoughts and ideas to an audience and many of our articles on communication are also relevant here, see: What is Communication? for more.

Consider the following key components of a presentation:

Ask yourself the following questions to develop a full understanding of the context of the presentation.

When and where will you deliver your presentation?

There is a world of difference between a small room with natural light and an informal setting, and a huge lecture room, lit with stage lights. The two require quite different presentations, and different techniques.

Will it be in a setting you are familiar with, or somewhere new?

If somewhere new, it would be worth trying to visit it in advance, or at least arriving early, to familiarise yourself with the room.

Will the presentation be within a formal or less formal setting?

A work setting will, more or less by definition, be more formal, but there are also various degrees of formality within that.

Will the presentation be to a small group or a large crowd?

Are you already familiar with the audience?

With a new audience, you will have to build rapport quickly and effectively, to get them on your side.

What equipment and technology will be available to you, and what will you be expected to use?

In particular, you will need to ask about microphones and whether you will be expected to stand in one place, or move around.

What is the audience expecting to learn from you and your presentation?

Check how you will be ‘billed’ to give you clues as to what information needs to be included in your presentation.

The role of the presenter is to communicate with the audience and control the presentation.

Remember, though, that this may also include handing over the control to your audience, especially if you want some kind of interaction.

The audience receives the presenter’s message(s).

However, this reception will be filtered through and affected by such things as the listener’s own experience, knowledge and personal sense of values.

The message or messages are delivered by the presenter to the audience.

The message is delivered not just by the spoken word ( verbal communication ) but can be augmented by techniques such as voice projection, body language, gestures, eye contact ( non-verbal communication ), and visual aids.

The message will also be affected by the audience’s expectations. For example, if you have been billed as speaking on one particular topic, and you choose to speak on another, the audience is unlikely to take your message on board even if you present very well . They will judge your presentation a failure, because you have not met their expectations.

The audience’s reaction and therefore the success of the presentation will largely depend upon whether you, as presenter, effectively communicated your message, and whether it met their expectations.

As a presenter, you don’t control the audience’s expectations. What you can do is find out what they have been told about you by the conference organisers, and what they are expecting to hear. Only if you know that can you be confident of delivering something that will meet expectations.

How will the presentation be delivered?

Presentations are usually delivered direct to an audience.  However, there may be occasions where they are delivered from a distance over the Internet using video conferencing systems, such as Skype.

It is also important to remember that if your talk is recorded and posted on the internet, then people may be able to access it for several years. This will mean that your contemporaneous references should be kept to a minimum.

Impediments

Many factors can influence the effectiveness of how your message is communicated to the audience.

For example background noise or other distractions, an overly warm or cool room, or the time of day and state of audience alertness can all influence your audience’s level of concentration.

As presenter, you have to be prepared to cope with any such problems and try to keep your audience focussed on your message.

What is a Feature Film — Definition & Qualifications Explained

Y ou may have heard the term “feature film” or even simply “feature” whenever the topic of movies comes up. But what is a feature film and how does it differ from other types of film? Features make up the larger library of motion pictures that movie-goers are familiar with. While they may differ in genre, stories, and even format, features share similar characteristics.

What is a Feature Film 

First, let’s define feature film.

To better understand the feature film meaning, let’s take a look at the feature film definition. This is important to differentiate features from other types of motion pictures.

What is a feature film.

A feature film is a film that typically has a run time between 80 minutes and 180 minutes long. This distinction, however, can depend on who you ask. The Screen Actors Guild defines a feature as a minimum of 80 minutes whereas The Academy defines a feature as a minimum of 40 minutes. The distinctions are primarily used to separate films into the category of a short film or a feature film. Films screened in commercial movie theatres are typically features that run over 80 minutes.

What are feature films and what is their place in the history of cinema? The history of motion pictures and evolution of features is dense and complex. Motion pictures evolved into storytelling features largely due to their ability to make money. 

The demand for stories told through motion pictures grew and soon studios formed to create as many motion pictures as possible to generate revenue. 

These motion pictures screened in theaters started off with shorter lengths. However they eventually evolved into what we now know as feature films. A few longer motion pictures convinced studios that there was a demand for longer, feature length films and thus more features were created.

To recap, one of the pioneers and biggest influences on the narrative elements of features is D.W. Griffith. While deeply racist and a proponent of hate, his film Birth of a Nation created a scope and scale that paved the way for a larger demand for features. 

As demand for features grew, so did technology. New technology impacted not only the creation of films, but the distribution as well. Studios grew and more features were being created year after year. 

When sound was introduced to cinema in The Jazz Singer (1927) and later color, demand for features grew exponentially. The multibillion dollar film industry we have today is a result of the evolution and demand for features.

What are Feature Films

Feature films vs. short films.

Not every film that filmmakers make is considered to be a feature. Films that fall under 80 minutes (or under 40 minutes to The Academy) or categorized as short films. What is a feature film versus a short film? There are a few key distinctions between features and shorts.

The first and most obvious difference is run time. How long is a feature film run time? As we’ve clarified earlier, features typically have a run time of at least 80 minutes. Short films, however, can be as short as only a few minutes and as long as 40 minutes. The difference in run time further creates numerous differences between shorts and features such as structure.

2. Structure

Most features follow a traditional three act structure that unfolds over the course of at least 80 minutes. What are feature films structures defined by?

Because short films have less time to tell a story, they typically utilize a different structure that focuses more on rising action and climax rather than exposition and denouement . 

3. Characters

The length of features allow filmmakers to introduce more characters. They also allow characters to have full character arcs and allow the audience to connect more deeply to them.

Shorts typically only allow an audience to see a snippet of a character and their life. Shorts lack exposition that tell us who this character is. Shorts also must focus on less characters to be more effective. 

While it is an obvious difference it is worth noting that a major reason why filmmakers even shoot short films is because they cost a lot less. For this reason, short films are often used as a proof of concept that generates interest and hopefully further investment for a full feature.

While not every short film will end up becoming the next Whiplash , they are a great way to gain experience for a director or producer before taking on your first feature. 

Whether you are interested in directing a feature or writing the screenplay for a one, understanding the key characteristics of features is important in crafting longer stories fit for a feature.   • Body : It is the essence of the presentation. It requires the sequencing of facts in a logical order. This is the part where the speaker explains the topic and relevant information. It has to be critically arranged, as the audience must be able to grasp what the speaker presents.
  • Conclusion : It needs to be short and precise. It should sum up or outline the key points that you have presented. It could also contain what the audience should have gained out of the presentation.

  • To inform : Organizations can use presentations to inform the audience about new schemes, products or proposals. The aim is to inform the new entrant about the policies and procedures of the organization.
  • To persuade : Presentations are also given to persuade the audience to take the intended action.
  • To build goodwill : They can also help in building a good reputation

1. Slide Deck

The Creator of ‘Arthur’ Has Some Ideas for a Feature Film

There’s a new show from Marc Brown , the creator of Arthur , coming soon. And just like Arthur , every character of Hop —which premieres April 4 on Max—has an original point of view.

Hop , which Max calls a “younger continuation of Arthur ,” follows Hop the frog ( David Connolly ), his older sister Penny (Misha Bakshi), and their neighborhood pals in Fair Village. What’s special about Hop , apart from being a sister series to Arthur , is that all of the characters have different disabilities. For example: Hop has one leg that’s shorter than the other. Filipa (Charlotte Walker), a friend of Penny’s, is neurodivergent. Even Hop’s next-door neighbor—who only appears on occasion—is blind.

This idea, Brown explains, actually stemmed from Arthur . “With Arthur , we occasionally invented a character who had a disability , but they never became a meaningful part of the ensemble cast,” Brown tells The Daily Beast’s Obsessed over Zoom, sitting in front of a wall full of Arthur and Hop artwork. “I felt like this was an opportunity, because whenever we did those characters in Arthur , we got such an incredible amount of letters from kids thanking us. They were seeing themselves.”

Then came the idea for Hop . “Why not include kids who are not often enough seen in the media?” Brown says. “They just happen to have these disabilities. It never defines who they are or what they can accomplish.”

Brown took a lot of other aspects of Arthur into Hop , because that sweet little aardvark and his friends have never left his mind. The creator remembers all those memes —from the clenched fist to “That sign can’t stop me because I can’t read!” —fondly. “I hope that happens with Hop ,” Brown adds.

Below, Brown chats about how working on Arthur led him to Hop , what’s next for the Arthur franchise—including a potential feature film in the works—and how his close friend Fred Rogers continues to inspire all of his creations.

What inspired you to make Hop ?

Well, we knew that we wanted to end Arthur in year 25. It was just an amazing run . I learned so much about telling stories through a different medium, because I was a picture book guy. When PBS came to me [in 1997], they had this wonderful agenda to use animation to make kids want to read. That’s where we started with Arthur .

I can’t believe it was six years ago that I did this little doodle of a frog with one leg shorter than the other—I felt like there was something there. I’ve always wanted to work for younger kids. All through Arthur , I saw this potential there. I had a good friend in Fred Rogers, who really inspired me using television for that age group.

Tell me more about how Fred impacted you and your work on Arthur and Hop .

Oh my God, where do you start? Fred was our second guest star on Arthur . [The Arthur team was] all going to meet him in Pittsburgh in his studio, but I missed my flight from Boston Logan Airport. I was so frustrated. When I got to the ticket booth at the airport, I said, “I need to get to Pittsburgh!” The woman there is like, “Yeah, right. Go take a seat.” And I said, “But I have a meeting with Mister Rogers.” She goes, “ The Mister Rogers?” I say, “Yeah.” Then, she goes, “Well, just a minute!” And then she got me on the next plane to Pittsburgh in first class.

Oh my goodness. That’s an incredible story.

I took a little Arthur doll with me. Let’s see, I’ve got one right here. [ Retrieves Arthur doll .] And I took the book that my wife Laurie and I did together called When Dinosaurs Die , because I knew he had just lost John Costa , who played the piano on [ Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood ] for many years. I was waiting in the office, and the receptionist said, “Well, why don’t you just go down? You can wait in Fred’s offices at the end of the hall.” Everyone was at lunch, and I opened the door, and there was Fred on his sofa in this little den room with shag carpeting and awards covering every inch of the walls.

We had this wonderful day together, and we talked about him losing his friend. He never referred to it as “dying” or “death.” He always said, “He went to heaven.” After this wonderful day, I said goodbye and I leave his office, and as I’m walking down the hall, I hear this little voice behind me. [ In a high-pitched voice ] “Marc, Marc?” Fred had opened the door to his office and he had Arthur sticking out. He says, “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be just fine.” We had a friendship that lasted many years. I think about him almost every day. I just hope that Hop has a shred of his heart and hopefulness for kids.

In Hop , all of the characters have a different disability. How did you research those disabilities to accurately portray them? You also have some voice actors who have similar experiences as their characters, like Charlotte Walker, who has autism, and David Connolly, who has a double below-knee amputation. Why was it important to include their voices?

We worked with an amazing group called RespectAbility . Every show passed through their offices. With their expertise, we wanted to get everything right. We found some wonderful voice talent. Charlotte, who voices Filipa’s character, loves animation. Our director, Bruce, discovered her at an animation camp where he taught. He said, “I know this girl, she’s so talented. I think we should audition her.” She turned out to be terrific.

And Hop—David has no legs from the knees down. He is the first dancer on Broadway who has that disability. He really understands what Hop is going through, although [the disability] is just there. Once in a while we’ll see Hop struggle with something, but it’s just a tiny reminder to kids that it doesn’t get in his way.

Aardvarks have become iconic following Arthur . How did you decide on frogs and the other animals you wanted to spotlight in Hop ?

That’s a really good question. I think the frog just came from that doodle. I always imagine what siblings a character might have. All of a sudden, there was Penny, who was a little bit older than Hop but acting a lot younger. I imagine if Lucille Ball and Amy Schumer got married and had a love child, it would be Hoot [an owl voiced by Makeda Bromfield]. People remind me of animals. It’s a crazy thing that I do, I’ll be talking on the phone with someone and I’ll imagine a snake at the other end.

Well, now I want to know what animal you think I am.

[ Laughs ] You could be Buster’s cousin.

OK, that’s a huge compliment! Hop is for a younger audience, but do you think older Arthur fans will still take a liking to it?

When we started Arthur , we found this really unusual thing happening: We were getting kids to watch Arthur who were much younger than our target audience and much older. Even Sesame Street learned from Arthur . They learned that the stories we were building were much more complex than what kids were getting, and I think that’s what made Arthur so popular. Kids knew that they weren’t being talked down to.

What has it been like for you in the past two years following the end of Arthur ?

I’d love to see an Arthur feature film happen. I’ve dabbled in that concept a little bit. I would love to play around with CGI animation and have fun with a different look. But I’m very critical about the software that would enable these characters to have a world. It’s getting better, but it hasn’t reached a level yet that I’m really excited about. So I’ll stick with my little 2D world.

What would an Arthur film look like?

If there was a feature film for Arthur , I would want to give kids something that they haven’t seen. Something new. I would love to see him enter junior high and talk to kids about what that world is like and focus on the power of social media.

I also see D.W.—maybe she’s in Mr. Ratburn’s class, and it’s a whole different ball game, because she’s D.W. Of all the characters, it was D.W. I enjoyed [writing] for the most, because she’s just so crazy. She’s a combination of my three younger sisters. She’s just full of fun and fire. Look out!

Why do you think Arthur has had such an impact on several generations?

It’s a very simple answer—the stories all originate in real life. There’s an immediate connection with the issues that Arthur and his friends are dealing with, because they’re things that you’ve probably experienced in your life. I started out with the Arthur books, and each one of those is based on an issue that one of my kids was struggling with. [My son] Tolon was afraid to go to day camp in first or second grade—that turned into Arthur going to camp . [My other son] Tucker had a loose tooth that wouldn’t come out in second grade, and everyone in his class had lost teeth; then, Arthur’s tooth happened.

When Arthur aired, it told stories based on real problems kids were facing at that time. What issues would a version of Arthur tackle today?

The media has changed so much in that time from when Arthur began—especially for kids who are maybe going into middle school, even younger—with social media. I’d love to do something for kids about social media. I think it would be interesting to have Arthur get a little older and maybe revisit that world in junior high, where kids are dealing with very different problems than they did in the younger version of Arthur . Kids are bombarded by the media. There’s so much junk that’s being offered to children that really makes me sick when I see it. They deserve better.

Christians around the world observe Good Friday two days before Easter, but what is it, and why do they commemorate the holy day?

The holiday is part of Holy Week, which leads up to Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday kicks off the series of Christian holy days that commemorate the Crucifixion and celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection.

"Good Friday has been, for centuries now, the heart of the Christian message because it is through the death of Jesus Christ that Christians believe that we have been forgiven of our sins," Daniel Alvarez, an associate teaching professor of religious studies at Florida International University, told USA TODAY.

When is Good Friday?

Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter. It's the second-to-last day of Holy Week.

In 2024, Good Friday will fall on March 29.

What is Good Friday?

Good Friday is the day Christ was sacrificed on the cross. According to Britannica , it is a day for "sorrow, penance, and fasting."

"Good Friday is part of something else," Gabriel Radle, an assistant professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, previously told USA TODAY. "It's its own thing, but it's also part of something bigger."

Are Good Friday and Passover related?

Alvarez says that Good Friday is directly related to the Jewish holiday, Passover.

Passover , or Pesach, is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt.

"The whole Christian idea of atoning for sin, that Jesus is our atonement, is strictly derived from the Jewish Passover tradition," said Alvarez.

How is that possible?

According to the professor, Passover celebrates the day the "Angel of Death" passed over the homes of Israelites who were enslaved by the Egyptians. He said that the Bible states when the exodus happened, families were told to paint their doors with lamb's blood so that God would spare the lives of their firstborn sons.

Alvarez says this is why Christians call Jesus the "lamb of God." He adds that the symbolism of the "blood of the lamb" ties the two stories together and is why Christians believe God sacrificed his firstborn son. Because, through his blood, humanity is protected from the "wrath of a righteous God that cannot tolerate sin."

He adds that the stories of the exodus and the Crucifixion not only further tie the stories together but also emphasize just how powerful the sacrifice of the firstborn and the shedding of blood are in religion.

"Jesus is the firstborn, so the whole idea of the death of the firstborn is crucial," said Alvarez.

He adds that the sacrifice of the firstborn, specifically a firstborn son, comes from an ancient and "primitive" idea that the sacrifice unleashes "tremendous power that is able to fend off any kind of force, including the wrath of God."

Why Is Good Friday so somber?

Alavarez says people might think this holiday is more depressing or sad than others because of how Catholics commemorate the Crucifixion.

"I think [it's] to a level that some people might think is morbid," said Alvarez.

He said Catholics not only meditate on Jesus' death, but primarily focus on the suffering he faced in the events that led up to his Crucifixion. That's what makes it such a mournful day for people.

But, the professor says that Jesus' suffering in crucial to Christianity as a whole.

"The suffering of Christ is central to the four Gospels," said Alvarez. "Everything else is incidental."

According to the professor, statues that use blood to emphasize the way Jesus and Catholic saints suffered is very common in Spanish and Hispanic Countries, but not as prevalent in American churches.

Do you fast on Good Friday?

Father Dustin Dought, the executive director of the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, previously told USA TODAY that Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the two days in the year that Roman Catholics are obliged to fast.

"This practice is a way of emptying ourselves so that we can be filled with God," said Dought.

What do you eat on Good Friday?

Many Catholics do not eat meat on any Friday during Lent. Anything with flesh is off-limits. Dought says this practice is to honor the way Jesus sacrificed his flesh on Good Friday.
