The Toxic Effects of Branding Your Workplace a “Family”

  • Joshua A. Luna

presentation work family

There are other ways to promote a healthy, supportive culture.

When it comes to conversations about our workplace, it’s no surprise that a deeply personal element comes into play. You spend most of your waking hours at work and share moments in that time that few outside of your coworkers have context and understanding to. So it only makes sense that the organizations’ culture and the relationships you build at work can mirror those you find within a family context. But what happens when you don’t have the right elements in place and a company masks their shortcomings and instills a false sense of belonging by touting a culture that works like a “family?”

If you’ve seen an open job posting or have been through a new job orientation over the last decade, you’ve probably seen the word “family” thrown around when describing a company’s culture.

"What is a work family? And should I have one?" [Creator's Block Ep. 88]

"What is a work family? And should I have one?" [Creator's Block Ep. 88]

So, we’ve talked about how to balance your personal life and your professional life and make them work like yin and yang, but it wasn’t until earlier this week that I really started to think about one of the most important parts of making that all gel… my work family.

Not to get into great detail here, but I have been feeling not quite right lately.

I’ve been having trouble focusing and getting my head right, beyond the usual 3:00 pm blues.

From the get-go, I immediately went to a couple of my closest coworkers for support.

These people not only helped me logistically, rearranging my schedule and work but also emotionally -- Just like family would.

This really got me thinking about how lucky I am to have coworkers and managers that I trust enough to share these parts of my life.

Lucky not only that they are understanding as my team, but that they genuinely care about me as a person.

...and I’m not alone!

83% of U.S. employees say their work-family makes them feel happier and a survey of 1,000 full-time workers ages 18-65 found that having a familial relationship with coworkers boosts productivity and feelings of well-being in the workplace.

So, this week, Justine and I are talking about something I think is not being discussed nearly enough, “The Work-Family.”

How-To Geek

How to create a family tree in microsoft powerpoint.

PowerPoint isn't just for business presentations. You can also impress your family by making your own custom family tree. Here's how.

A family tree is a hierarchical chart that details the connection between members of a family . You can create your own family tree in PowerPoint by using one of Microsoft's many hierarchy style SmartArt graphics. Here's how.

To get started, open PowerPoint and navigate to the "Insert" tab.

In the "Illustrations" group, click "SmartArt."

The "Choose a SmartArt Graphic" window will appear. In the left-hand pane, click the "Hierarchy" tab.

You'll now see a small collection of hierarchy SmartArt graphics. For standard family trees, the " Organizational Chart " option is ideal. However, you can choose whichever SmartArt graphic works best for you.

Select the chart you would like to use by clicking it.

Once selected, a preview and a description of the chart will appear in the right-hand pane. Click "OK" to insert the chart.

With the chart added to your presentation, you can start entering the names of the family members in each respective box. Do this by clicking the box and typing their name. The text will resize itself to fit the boxes automatically.

You can delete boxes you don't need by clicking the box to select it and then pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

You can also add additional boxes below or above certain positions. To do this, highlight the box by clicking it.

Next, click the "Design" tab in the "SmartArt Tools" group.

In the "Create Graphic" group, click the arrow next to the "Add Shape" option.

A drop-down menu will appear. The option you select from the menu will depend on where you want to place the box with respect to the currently selected box. Here's what each option does:

  • Add Shape After: Adds a box to the right, and on the same level, of the selected box.
  • Add Shape Before: Adds a box to the left, and on the same level, of the selected box.
  • Add Shape Above: Adds a box above the selected box.
  • Add Shape Below: Adds a box below the selected box.
  • Add Assistant: Adds a box between the level of the selected box and the level below.

In this example, assuming our fictional character Bryon had a child, we'd use the "Add Shape Below" option.

A box will now appear below our selected box.

Once the box is placed, enter the name of the respective family member. Repeat these steps until your family tree is complete.

You can also tweak the design or change the color of the chart. Click the chart to select it and then click the "Design" tab. In the "SmartArt Styles" group, you'll see a range of different styles to choose from, as well as the option to change colors.

Click the "Change Colors" option to show a drop-down menu, then select the color scheme you like best.

Next, choose a style you like from the lineup in the "SmartArt Styles" group. We'll use the "Inset" option.

Your chart will take on the selected color and style.

Play around with the styles and colors until you find one the works best for you.

Creating a family tree is an exciting thing, but it's always a collaborative effort. You can ask family members to collaborate on the presentation with you to ensure that no family members are left out. And remember to share the presentation with your family once the family tree is complete!

Classical Conversations: 20 Easy Ways to Rock Your Family Presentation

Welcome to Classical Conversations! Are you one of the 75% of people who are afraid of public speaking? Let’s change that by raising up kids who have been practicing speaking in front of classmates since they were four years old. Training up confident speakers is one of the top reasons my family loves Classical Conversations , and the yearly family CC presentation is just one of the ways this is done.

To my homeschooling family, our Classical Conversations co-op is a room of our favorite friends who feel more like a family. In a CC homeschool group, you get to know the family members, your children’s tutors, and your children’s friends. It’s not just your homeschool kids who will have to give a weekly presentation in front of their classmates. Family presentation is for everyone in the family… including the parents!

If this is your first year in Classical Conversations, the thought of standing in front of more than fifty kids and their parents may be a little overwhelming. However, it really is a great way to get to know the other parents at your Classical Conversations group, and hopefully, you will be able to find a new Mom friend among the crowd.

Let’s limit your stress level. Copy these ideas! Here’s a long list of Classical Conversations presentation ideas to lessen your worries. And, please, have fun and don’t stress it.

What is a Classical Conversations Family Presentation?

A CC family presentation can be as formal or loose as you and your family want to make it. Your family presentation may last five minutes or ten minutes. It may be the highlight of your kids’ year, and they ask you weekly when your family gets to talk. In contrast, this may be the CC week that makes you want to choose to fake an illness.

Know the day for your family talk ahead of time, and plan accordingly. And don’t be afraid to express your concerns to the Foundations director. She’s your new best friend and can answer all your questions! The Classical Conversations foundations director may even let you pick the date, so you can wait until you’re feeling more comfortable.

~~~~> Wondering how Classical Conversations presentations play into your future homeschooling teens? Make sure you read “ Classical Conversations Challenge Program: How to Homeschool Teens. ” It’s not as scary as it sounds!
Why Does Classical Conversations Include Presentations?
CC makes public speaking a priority in all levels. The brief show-and-tell type presentations of their early years are preparing them for their upcoming years. They will be less nervous reading papers in front of their Essentials peers in fourth to sixth grades. And just wait until they advance to the CC Challenge years! Your kid will be reciting entire speeches, standing in front of a room debating and presenting grant proposals, and eventually defending themselves in front of a panel of “judges” with their senior thesis in Challenge IV.
Don’t stress the younger years. Your Foundations kids are learning basic skills that are preparing them for the future naturally. And rest assured that their confidence and eye-contact will just continue to strength and amaze us all.
What is Included in a CC Family Presentation?
The main components of a family presentation are simple. All you have to do is…
  • Introduce yourself as Mom (and hopefully Dad if he can come)
  • Let the kids introduce themselves by name and age
  • Tell something about your family.
  • And… Keep it short! Aim for five minutes and call it done.
Remember, this isn’t a big structured presentation that you need to spend an hour memorizing. Bring notes. Draw up a pasteboard. Grab whatever you need to make your life easier.
Ideas for Fun Family Presentation Ideas for CC!
Everyone’s CC family presentation looks different, but it isn’t necessary. Copy someone else’s ideas!
Most likely, the other grown ups in your Classical Conversations group don’t remember what each family talked about, and they definitely couldn’t tell you if you’re stealing someone else’s idea. Even if they realize you did exactly what they did the week before, Classical Conversations parents don’t care! Go ahead and steal these ideas!
Remember, family presentation can be a time to learn from each other, get encouragement from other homeschool families, and above all, get to know the amazing people that are now in your life!
Make Your Family Presentation Funny
Two truths and lie – Have a list of two true things and one lie ready for each family member. Read them out, and the community has to guess which one is the lie for each person. They love the interactiveness of this, and it can get a bit rowdy.
Guess who – Have each kid bring 2-3 items that belong to them. Put them in a big bag, and someone in the family unveils each item one at a time. The audience guesses who it belongs to, the owner of the item agrees or disagrees, and they tells a short story about the item.
Tell a joke – You know those silly jokes your kid wants to tell you over and over? Bring them to a new audience!
Rhyming words – Write a silly poem about each member of the family. The gigglier the better.
Homeschool kids and parents at art museum trip
Make Your Family Presentation Musical
Family dance off – This is the most creative one I’ve seen in a while. The presenting family shared their favorite song that helps them wake up every morning, and the whole school got up and had a dance party with them. Don’t be afraid to make your presentations fun!
Sing a song together – Have each family member grab an instrument they can play (or bang) and sing a hymn or favorite song you enjoy singing together at home. Make it silly or make it beautiful. Either way wins.
Perform for us – Work together at home to prepare a short skit or play for everyone. Assign parts, bring props, and make it yours.
Make Your Family Presentation Encouraging
Share your faith – Tell a favorite Bible verse, Bible story, devotional, or prayer. This is a great way to practice sharing their faith!
Tell of homeschool victories – All homeschool parents need to know that they aren’t alone in this homeschool journey. Use this time to share a personal or family victory (or struggle); tell of how you are hoping to create a family of lifelong learners .
Share your homeschool journey – Mom can tell the family’s homeschool story while the kids tell their favorite part about homeschooling or their favorite subject.
Speak to younger homeschool moms – If you have older kids, use this time to share about your students’ Essentials or Challenge journeys. Let them see the connections with Foundations, and give younger moms a glimpse of what they can look forward to. (This also helps them know which “older” parent might have answers to their future questions.)
~~~~> Make sure you check out my “How to Be a Prepared Essentials Mom” blog post. There really is so much to know as you move into the upper levels of elementary school with Classical Conversations.

Homeschool kids outside with firefighters during a Classical Conversations school day

Make Your Family Presentation Historical

Family history – Share a story of your ancestor or where your family came from. This is especially meaningful if you can tie it into a history or geography topic for the year.

Meaning of the name – Have each person tell the meaning of their name when they introduce themselves or where their name came from. You could even tie it in with the meaning of your last name. Don’t forget to tell about the pets at home too.

Share your favorite historical person – Classical Conversations dives so deep into history! Use this opportunity to share random facts about the person you’re studying or even to introduce them to a new person that they should know!

Make Your Family Presentation Familial

Recent Road trips – You know this one is our favorite! Homeschool families like to travel – it’s a fact. Inspire other people to take homeschooling on the road with your adventure mom tips or favorite road trips destinations. Bonus if you bring photos of your favorite destinations. I bet you’ll find a mom coming up to you afterward asking for your road trip planning tips .

Bring pictures – If you have pets or special items that you can’t easily bring to CC, bring a picture! Let the kids talk about the picture, answer questions about the picture, and possibly pass the picture around if you can. (If it’s okay with the community, bring your special pet. Better than a picture!)

Family traditions – What is that special thing you do together to celebrate that others might enjoy adding or learning about? What do you do at Christmas? What non-traditional holidays do you celebrate?

What we like to do as a family – Keep this simple. “My name is ——. My favorite thing to do is….”

~~~> Wish you had a road trip to share? Check out “10 Tips to a Family Road Trip with Less Stress” .
Make Your Family Presentation Personal
My favorite games, sport, books, toy… – Kids listen to suggestions from other kids more than they do from their own parents. (Surely I’m not the only one, right?) Use this presentation time to convince other kids why they should play or read something new. It might even inspire a kid book club or show a mom how to incorporate gameschooling .
Bring a hobby – Have everyone bring a sample of a craft or hobby they like to do. This is another great way to inspire others to learn how to do something new and remind kids that mom will always be the lead learner in your homeschool .
Read some of their writing – If you are a small family with an Essentials student , use this time to tell why you love the program, and let your child proudly read one of their Essentials writing assignments. Even if they’re not in Essentials, bring something to share!
If you’re new to Classical Conversations or homeschooling or even just new to presentations in front of a group, I hope this ideas help! You and the kids can do more than you think you can.
23 presentation examples that really work (plus templates!)
Three professionals engaged in a collaborative meeting with a Biteable video maker, a laptop, and documents on the table.
  • 30 Mar 2023
To help you in your quest for presentation greatness, we’ve gathered 23 of the best business presentation examples out there. These hand-picked ideas range from business PowerPoint presentations, to recruitment presentations, and everything in between.
As a bonus, several of our examples include editable video presentation templates from  Biteable .
Biteable allows anyone to create great video presentations — no previous video-making skills required. The easy-to-use platform has hundreds of brandable templates and video scenes designed with a business audience in mind. A video made with Biteable is just what you need to add that wow factor and make an impact on your audience.
Create videos that drive action
Activate your audience with impactful, on-brand videos. Create them simply and collaboratively with Biteable.
Video presentation examples
Video presentations are our specialty at Biteable. We love them because they’re the most visually appealing and memorable way to communicate.
1. Animated characters
Our first presentation example is a business explainer from Biteable that uses animated characters. The friendly and modern style makes this the perfect presentation for engaging your audience.
Bonus template:  Need a business video presentation that reflects the beautiful diversity of your customers or team? Use  Biteable’s workplace scenes . You can change the skin tone and hair color for any of the animated characters.
2. Conference video
Videos are also ideal solutions for events (e.g. trade shows) where they can be looped to play constantly while you attend to more important things like talking to people and handing out free cheese samples.
For this event presentation sample below, we used bright colours, stock footage, and messaging that reflects the brand and values of the company. All these elements work together to draw the attention of passers-by.
For a huge selection of video presentation templates, take a look at our  template gallery .
Business PowerPoint presentation examples
Striking fear into the hearts of the workplace since 1987, PowerPoint is synonymous with bland, boring presentations that feel more like an endurance test than a learning opportunity. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Check out these anything-but-boring business PowerPoint presentation examples.
3. Design pointers
This PowerPoint presentation takes a tongue-in-cheek look at how the speakers and users of PowerPoint are the problem, not the software itself.
Even at a hefty 61 slides, the vintage theme, appealing colors, and engaging content keep the viewer interested. It delivers useful and actionable tips on creating a better experience for your audience.
Pixar, as you’d expect, redefines the meaning of PowerPoint in their “22 Rules for Phenomenal Storytelling”. The character silhouettes are instantly recognizable and tie firmly to the Pixar brand. The bright colour palettes are carefully chosen to highlight the content of each slide.
This presentation is a good length, delivering one message per slide, making it easy for an audience to take notes and retain the information.
Google slides examples
If you’re in business, chances are you’ll have come across  slide decks . Much like a deck of cards, each slide plays a key part in the overall ‘deck’, creating a well-rounded presentation.
If you need to inform your team, present findings, or outline a new strategy, slides are one of the most effective ways to do this.
Google Slides is one of the best ways to create a slide deck right now. It’s easy to use and has built-in design tools that integrate with Adobe, Lucidchart, and more. The best part — it’s free!
5. Teacher education
Here’s a slide deck that was created to educate teachers on how to use Google Slides effectively in a classroom. At first glance it seems stuffy and businessy, but if you look closer it’s apparent the creator knows his audience well, throwing in some teacher-friendly content that’s bound to get a smile.
The slides give walkthrough screenshots and practical advice on the different ways teachers can use the software to make their lives that little bit easier and educate their students at the same time.
6. Charity awareness raiser
This next Google slide deck is designed to raise awareness for an animal shelter. It has simple, clear messaging, and makes use of the furry friends it rescues to tug on heartstrings and encourage donations and adoptions from its audience.
Pro tip: Creating a presentation is exciting but also a little daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed — especially if the success of your business or nonprofit depends on it.
Prezi presentation examples
If you haven’t come across  Prezi , it’s a great alternative to using static slides. Sitting somewhere between slides and a video presentation, it allows you to import other content and add motion to create a more engaging viewer experience.
7. Red Bull event recap
This Prezi was created to document the Red Bull stratosphere freefall stunt a few years ago. It neatly captures all the things that Prezi is capable of, including video inserts and the zoom effect, which gives an animated, almost 3D effect to what would otherwise be still images.
Prezi has annual awards for the best examples of presentations over the year. This next example is one of the 2018 winners. It was made to highlight a new Logitech tool.
8. Logitech Spotlight launch
What stands out here are the juicy colors, bold imagery, and the way the designer has used Prezi to its full extent, including rotations, panning, fades, and a full zoom out to finish the presentation.
Sales presentation examples
If you’re stuck for ideas for your sales presentation, step right this way and check out this video template we made for you.
9. Sales enablement video presentation
In today’s fast-paced sales environment, you need a way to make your sales enablement presentations memorable and engaging for busy reps.  Sales enablement videos  are just the ticket. Use this video presentation template the next time you need to present on your metrics.
10. Zuroa sales deck
If you’re after a sales deck, you can’t go past this example from Zuora. What makes it great? It begins by introducing the worldwide shift in the way consumers are shopping. It’s a global phenomenon, and something we can all relate to.
It then weaves a compelling story about how the subscription model is changing the face of daily life for everyone. Metrics and testimonials from well-known CEOs and executives are included for some slamming social proof to boost the sales message.
Pitch presentation examples
Pitch decks are used to give an overview of business plans, and are usually presented during meetings with customers, investors, or potential partners.
11. Uber pitch deck
This is Uber’s original pitch deck, which (apart from looking a teensy bit dated) gives an excellent overview of their business model and clearly shows how they intended to disrupt a traditional industry and provide a better service to people. Right now, you’re probably very grateful that this pitch presentation was a winner.
You can make your own pitch deck with Biteable, or start with one of our  video templates  to make something a little more memorable.
12. Video pitch template
This video pitch presentation clearly speaks to the pains of everyone who needs to commute and find parking. It then provides the solution with its app that makes parking a breeze.
The video also introduces the key team members, their business strategy, and what they’re hoping to raise in funding. It’s a simple, clear pitch that positions the company as a key solution to a growing, worldwide problem. It’s compelling and convincing, as a good presentation should be.
13. Fyre Festival pitch deck
The most epic example of a recent pitch deck is this one for Fyre Festival – the greatest event that never happened. Marvel at its persuasion, gasp at the opportunity of being part of the cultural experience of the decade, cringe as everything goes from bad to worse.
Despite the very public outcome, this is a masterclass in how to create hype and get funding with your pitch deck using beautiful imagery, beautiful people, and beautiful promises of riches and fame.
Business presentation examples
Need to get the right message out to the right people? Business presentations can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
Simply press play and let your video do the talking. No fumbling your words and sweating buckets in front of those potential clients, just you being cool as a cucumber while your presentation does the talking.
Check out two of our popular templates that you can use as a starting point for your own presentations. While they’re business-minded, they’re definitely not boring.
14. Business intro template
Modern graphics, animations, and upbeat soundtracks keep your prospects engaged as they learn about your business, your team, your values, and how you can help them.
15. Business explainer template
Research presentation examples.
When you’re giving a more technical presentation such as research findings, you need to strike the perfect balance between informing your audience and making sure they stay awake.
As a rule, slides are more effective for research presentations, as they are used to support the speaker’s knowledge rather can capture every small detail on screen.
With often dry, complex, and technical subject matter, there can be a temptation for presentations to follow suit. Use images instead of walls of text, and keep things as easy to follow as possible.
16. TrackMaven research deck
TrackMaven uses their endearing mascot to lighten up this data-heavy slide deck. The graphs help to bring life to their findings, and they ensure to only have one bite-size takeaway per slide so that viewers can easily take notes.
17. Wearable tech research report
Obviously, research can get very researchy and there’s not a lot to be done about it. This slide deck below lays out a ton of in-depth information but breaks it up well with quotes, diagrams, and interesting facts to keep viewers engaged while it delivers its findings on wearable technology.
Team presentation examples
Motivating your team can be a challenge at the best of times, especially when you need to gather them together for….another presentation!
18. Team update template
We created this presentation template as an example of how to engage your team. In this case, it’s for an internal product launch. Using colorful animation and engaging pacing, this video presentation is much better than a static PowerPoint, right?
19. Officevibe collaboration explainer
This short slide deck is a presentation designed to increase awareness of the problems of a disengaged team. Bright colors and relevant images combine with facts and figures that compel viewers to click through to a download to learn more about helping their teams succeed.
Recruitment presentation examples
Recruiting the right people can be a challenge. Presentations can help display your team and your business by painting a dynamic picture of what it’s like to work with you.
Videos and animated slides let you capture the essence of your brand and workplace so the right employees can find you.
20. Company culture explainer
If you’re a recruitment agency, your challenge is to stand out from the hundreds of other agencies in the marketplace.
21. Kaizen culture
Showcasing your agency using a slide deck can give employers and employees a feel for doing business with you. Kaizen clearly displays its credentials and highlights its brand values and personality here (and also its appreciation of the coffee bean).
Explainer presentation examples
Got some explaining to do? Using an explainer video is the ideal way to showcase products that are technical, digital, or otherwise too difficult to explain with still images and text.
Explainer videos help you present the features and values of your product in an engaging way that speaks to your ideal audience and promotes your brand at the same time.
22. Product explainer template
23. lucidchart explainer.
Lucidchart does a stellar job of using explainer videos for their software. Their series of explainers-within-explainers entertains the viewer with cute imagery and an endearing brand voice. At the same time, the video is educating its audience on how to use the actual product. We (almost) guarantee you’ll have more love for spiders after watching this one.
Jude Bellingham: I go to work like everyone else and feel quite normal
The midfield maestro says his family keeps him grounded and he does not "feel like a kid at the top".
Bellingham has already earned 29 caps and three goals playing for his country.
Just 20 years old, Jude Bellingham already has the swagger of a superstar when scoring for England and Real Madrid.
Away from the stage of the stadium, the fearless, formidable player is focused on football rather than fame.
The midfield maestro is meeting Sky News for an exclusive interview that is a rarity as he rarely sits down with the media - with the playing career firmly the priority.
"I have a really good support network - my family, my friends, they keep me really grounded," Bellingham said. "I don't feel like a kid who's at the top … I feel like I go in every day to work like everyone else, and I'm just privileged that my work I enjoy it as much as I do.
"My family keeps me grounded and they make me enjoy it every day and come home to feel quite normal."
Normality might become harder to experience as his status soars.
Last kick of the game
This trip back to England ticked off another landmark. A first goal at Wembley - salvaging a draw in last night's friendly with Belgium with the last kick of the game.
Pride was tinged with regret that this international break finished without a victory.
The priority is the summer and going for glory at Euro 2024 in Germany after being part of the squad that reached the final at his first tournament in 2021.
When asked for his targets: "Trophies. Being able to give my country and my team, Real Madrid, great experiences and great memories of lifting trophies."
Winning a trophy with England's men would end a drought going back to the 1966 World Cup.
'Not the best memories'
Growing up, Bellingham was a fan witnessing the misery of a group-stage exit at the 2014 World Cup and embarrassment to Iceland at Euro 2016.
"They weren't great for England, to be fair, so it's difficult," he said. "I always remember watching the games with my family.
"I remember going out to Iceland, Italy [Euro 2012 quarter-finals], and that was probably my two earliest [memories] until I kind of played in the next one.
"So not the best memories from the perspective of an England fan.
"But all round it was really fun, kind of experiencing that with my brother, and always saying to each other that one day we'll be there and, hopefully this summer we'll be again."
Brother Jobe, who has forged his own playing career at Sunderland having both started out at hometown club Birmingham City, will be part of the family's extended support for Jude.
England squad has 'such a good environment'
In the England set-up, Jordan Henderson, who currently plays for Ajax, is one of the players that Bellingham turns to to help navigate the expectation of playing for a national team that has only recently enjoyed highs again.
"You learn from their pain if you like," Bellingham says. "When I speak to Hendo, I'm really close with him, he tells me a lot about how lucky I am to be in this squad with such a good environment.
"It was a bit different when he was playing at the start. And I try and listen to him a lot because of the kind of role model that he is to me.
"He's probably helped me coming into the squad and he's helped me manage that expectation and that responsibility."
Being adventurous with his career has also prepared him for international duty.
There was the move to Borussia Dortmund in the midst of the pandemic in 2020 from Birmingham. After collecting a German Cup during his three seasons it was time to step up to the kings of European football - Real Madrid.
"It's been really, really tough, but really fun, adapting to life in Spain and kind of having more responsibility with the Madrid team and with the national team," he said.
"I'm kind of just trying to soak it all in and enjoy the experience and yeah, hopefully, improve and thrive on the back of it."
It is the most pressurised of footballing environments but he has already become integral to the team in his first season that could still end with LaLiga and Champions League titles.
'I move with the ball'
In 31 games, he has already scored 20 times and provided nine assists.
"I try and go out on the pitch and do my job and help my team win football games," he says. "People kind of like the style which I play.
"I move with the ball and, and it's really nice. I try to relate to the fans while I'm playing as well."
Often the conversation goes back to club and country.
"I want the fans to feel like I'm another fan playing and representing them, because that's what it is all about at the end of the day," he says.
"And if they can see me and see someone that I can relate to and support, then it's going to help the support of the team as well.
"And their support means a lot to us, more than they probably believe. So when the country is positive and when the fans are positive, the team will play better."
He is ever the team player, but all the game's personal accolades are destined to be filling his trophy cabinet one day.
"I wake up and I have to pinch myself, when I'm playing for England at Wembley or playing at the Bernabeu for Real Madrid," he said.
"It's something that I could never dreamed of happening this early, but grateful to everyone who's played a part in my journey."
And he is here giving back.
Being part of a Fun Football initiative is a sign of his commercial appeal as he is signed up to McDonald's.
But it is chosen so he can inspire the next generation and ensure they have access to football - particularly those with a disability.
"What we're seeing more of now is diversity in football, which is so important," Bellingham says.
"Gender, race … shouldn't matter when it comes to playing football. And it's lovely to come here today and see the kids, regardless of who they are, what background they are from, any disabilities that they can enjoy playing football."
Central American and Mexican families mourn the Baltimore bridge collapse missing workers
A ZACUALPA, Honduras (AP) — The construction workers who went missing in the Baltimore bridge collapse came to the Maryland area from Mexico or Central America, including an enterprising Honduran father and husband who started a delivery business before the pandemic forced him to find other work, according to his family.
Police managed to close bridge traffic seconds before a cargo ship slammed into one of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s supports early Tuesday, causing the span to fall into the frigid Patapsco River. There wasn't time for a maintenance crew filling potholes on the span to get to safety.
At least eight people fell into the water and two were rescued . Two bodies were recovered Wednesday and four remained missing and were presumed dead.
The governments of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras confirmed that their citizens were among the missing .
Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38, was the youngest of eight siblings from Azacualpa, a rural mountainous area in northwestern Honduras along the border with Guatemala.
Eighteen years ago, he set out on his own for the U.S. looking for opportunities. He had worked as an industrial technician in Honduras, repairing equipment in the large assembly plants, but the pay was too low to get ahead, one of his brothers, Martín Suazo Sandoval, said Wednesday while standing in the dirt street in front of the family’s small hotel in Honduras.
“He always dreamed of having his own business,” he said.
Another brother, Carlos Suazo Sandoval, said Maynor hoped to retire one day back in Guatemala.
“He was the baby for all of us, the youngest. He was someone who was always happy, was always thinking about the future. He was a visionary,” he told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday from Dundalk, Maryland, near the site of the bridge collapse.
Maynor entered the United States illegally and settled in Maryland. At first, he did any work he could find, including construction and clearing brush. Eventually, he started a package delivery business in the Baltimore-Washington area, Martín Suazo Sandoval said.
Other siblings and relatives followed him north.
“He was the fundamental pillar, the bastion so that other members of the family could also travel there and later get visas and everything,” Martín Suazo Sandoval said. “He was really the driving force so that most of the family could travel.”
Maynor has a wife and two children ages 17 and 5, he said.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced Maynor to find other work, and he joined Brawner Builders, the company that was performing maintenance on the bridge when it collapsed.
Martín Suazo Sandoval said Maynor never talked about being scared of the work, despite the heights he worked at on the bridges. “He always told us that you had to triple your effort to get ahead,” Martín Suazo Sandoval said. “He said it didn't matter what time or where the job was, you had to be where the work was.”
Things had been going well for him until the collapse. He was moving through the steps to get legal residency and planned to return to Honduras this year to complete the process, his brother said.
Even though Maynor had not been able to return to Honduras, he had financially supported various nongovernmental social organizations in town, as well as the youth soccer league, his brother said. The area depends largely upon agriculture — coffee, cattle, sugarcane — he said.
Maynor's employer broke the news of his disappearance to his family, leaving them devastated, especially his mother, who still lives in Azacualpa, Martín Suazo Sandoval said.
“These are difficult moments, and the only thing we can do is keep the faith,” he said, noting that his younger brother knew how to swim and could have ended up anywhere. If the worst outcome is confirmed, he said the family would work to return his body to Honduras.
In Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said three Mexicans were on the bridge when it fell, including one who was injured but rescued and two who were still missing. He wouldn't share their names for the families’ privacy.
The tragedy illustrated the contributions that migrants make to the U.S. economy, López Obrador said.
“This demonstrates that migrants go out and do risky jobs at midnight. And for this reason, they do not deserve to be treated as they are by certain insensitive, irresponsible politicians in the United States,” he said.
Later, Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of Maryland State Police, announced that the bodies of two men, ages 35 and 26, had been located by divers inside a red pickup submerged in about 25 feet (7.6 meters) of water near the bridge’s middle span.
One was Guatemalan Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, and the other 35-year-old Alejandro Hernández Fuentes, originally from Mexico.
Guatemala’s Foreign Affairs Ministry had earlier confirmed that two of its citizens were among the missing. And El Salvador's foreign minister, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, posted Wednesday on X that one Salvadoran citizen, Miguel Luna, was among the missing workers.
Federal and state investigators have said the crash appears to have been an accident.
Associated Press reporters Sonia Pérez D. in Guatemala City, Marcos Aléman in San Salvador, El Salvador, Mark Stevenson in Mexico City and Will Weissert in Dundalk, Maryland, contributed to this report.
This story was updated to correct Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval’s age. He was 38 years old, not 39.
About two months after undergoing open-heart surgery, Sara England's infant son, Amari Vaca, was sick and struggling to breathe. Staff members at a local medical center in Salinas, California, arranged for him to be transferred to a different hospital via air ambulance.
Sara England was putting together Ghostbusters costumes for Halloween when she noticed her baby wasn't doing well.
Her 3-month-old son, Amari Vaca, had undergone open-heart surgery two months before, so she called his cardiologist, who recommended getting him checked out. England assigned Amari's grandparents to trick-or-treat duty with his three older siblings and headed to the local emergency room.
Once they arrived at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, California, she said doctors could see Amari was struggling to breathe and told her that he needed specialized care immediately, from whichever of two major hospitals in the region had an opening first.
Bill of the Month is a crowdsourced investigation by KFF Health News and NPR that dissects and explains medical bills. Do you have an interesting medical bill you want to share with us? Tell us about it !
Even as they talked, Amari was declining rapidly, his mother said. Doctors put a tube down his throat and used a bag to manually push air into his lungs for over an hour to keep his oxygen levels up until he was stable enough to switch to a ventilator.
According to England, late that night, when doctors said the baby was stable enough to travel, his medical team told England that a bed had opened up at the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center and staffers there were ready to receive him.
She, her son, and an EMT boarded a small plane around midnight. Ground ambulances carried them between the hospitals and airports.
Amari was diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, and spent three weeks in the hospital before recovering and returning home.
Then the bill came.
The patient: Amari Vaca, now 1, who was covered by a Cigna policy sponsored by his father's employer at the time.
Medical services: An 86-mile air-ambulance flight from Salinas to San Francisco.
Service Providers: Reach Medical Holdings , which is part of Global Medical Response , an industry giant backed by private equity investors. Global Medical Response operates in all 50 states and has said it has a total of 498 helicopters and airplanes.
Total bill: $97,599. Cigna declined to cover any part of the bill.
What gives: Legal safeguards are in place to protect patients from big bills for some out-of-network care, including air-ambulance rides.
Medical billing experts said the No Surprises Act , a federal law enacted in 2022, could have protected Amari's family from receiving the $97,000 "balance bill," leaving the insurer and the air-ambulance provider to determine fair payment according to the law. But the protections apply only to care that health plans determine is "medically necessary" — and insurers get to define what that means in each case.
According to its coverage denial letter, Cigna determined that Amari's air-ambulance ride was not medically necessary. The insurer cited its reasoning: He could have taken a ground ambulance instead of a plane to cover the nearly 100 roadway miles between Salinas and San Francisco.
"I thought there must have been a mistake," England said. "There's no way we can pay this. Is this a real thing?"
In the letter, Cigna said Amari's records did not show that other methods of transportation were "medically contraindicated or not feasible." The health plan also noted the absence of documentation that he could not be reached by a ground ambulance for pickup or that a ground ambulance would be unfeasible because of "great distances or other obstacles."
Lastly, it said records did not show a ground ambulance "would impede timely and appropriate medical care."
When KFF Health News asked Cigna what records were referenced when making this decision, a spokesperson declined to respond.
Caitlin Donovan, a spokesperson for the National Patient Advocate Foundation, said that even though Amari's bill isn't technically in violation of the No Surprises Act, the situation is exactly what the law was designed to avoid.
"What they're basically saying is that the parents should have opted against the advice of the physician," Donovan said. "That's insane. I know 'medical necessity' is this nebulous term, but it seems like it's becoming a catch-all for turning down patients."
On Feb. 5, the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians said that since the No Surprises Act was enacted two years ago, it has seen a jump in claim denials based on "lack of medical necessity," predominantly for air-ambulance transports between facilities.
In a letter to federal health officials, the group cited reasons commonly given for inappropriate medical-necessity denials observed by some of its 2,000 members, such as "the patient should have been taken elsewhere" or "the patient could have been transported by ground ambulance."
The association urged the government to require that health plans presume medical necessity for inter-facility air transports ordered by a physician at a hospital, subject to a retrospective review.
Such decisions are often "made under dire circumstances — when a hospital is not capable of caring for or stabilizing a particular patient or lacks the clinical resources to stabilize a patient with a certain clinical diagnosis," the group's president, José Cabañas, wrote in the letter. "Clinical determinations made by a referring physician (or another qualified medical professional) should not be second-guessed by a plan."
Patricia Kelmar, a health policy expert and senior director with the U.S. Public Interest Research Groups, noted, however, that hospitals could familiarize themselves with local health plans, for example, and establish protocol, so that before they call an air ambulance, they know if there are in-network alternatives and, if not, what items the plan needs to justify the claim and provide payment.
"The hospitals who live and breathe and work in our communities should be considering the individuals who come to them every day," Kelmar said. "I understand in emergency situations, you generally have a limited amount of time, but, in most situations, you should be familiar with the plans so you can work within the confines of the patient's health insurance."
England said Cigna's denial particularly upset her.
"As parents, we did not make any of the decisions other than to say, 'yes, we'll do that,'" she said, "And...I don't know how else it could have gone."
The colonoscopies were free but the 'surgical trays' came with $600 price tags
Shots - Health News
The colonoscopies were free but the 'surgical trays' came with $600 price tags.
The resolution: England twice appealed the air-ambulance charge to the insurer, but both times Cigna rejected the claim, maintaining that "medical necessity" had not been established.
The final step of the appeals process is an external review, in which a third party evaluates the case. England said staff members at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas — which arranged Amari's transport — declined to write an appeal letter on his behalf, explaining to her that doing so is against the facility's policy.
Using her son's medical records, which the Natividad staff provided, England said she is writing a letter herself to assert why the air ambulance was medically necessary.
Andrea Rosenberg, spokesperson for Natividad Medical Center, said the hospital focuses on "maintaining the highest standards of health care and patient well-being." Despite receiving a waiver from England authorizing the medical center to discuss Amari's case, she did not respond to questions from KFF Health News, citing privacy issues.
A Cigna spokesperson told KFF Health News that the insurer has in-network alternatives to the out-of-network ambulance provider, but — despite receiving a waiver authorizing Cigna to discuss Amari's case — declined to answer other questions.
"It is disappointing that CALSTAR/REACH is attempting to collect this egregious balance from the patient's family," the Cigna spokesperson, Justine Sessions, said in an email, referring to the air-ambulance provider. "We are working diligently to try to resolve this for the family."
On March 13, weeks after being contacted by KFF Health News, England said, a Cigna representative contacted her and offered assistance with her final appeal, the one reviewed by a third-party. The representative also told her the insurer had attempted to contact the ambulance provider but had been unable to resolve the bill with them.
Global Medical Response, the ambulance provider, declined to comment on the record.
England said she and her husband have set aside two hours each week for him to take care of their four kids while she shuts herself in her room and makes calls about their medical bills.
"It's just another stress," she said. "Another thing to get in the way of us being able to enjoy our family."
The takeaway: Kelmar said she encourages patients to appeal bills that seem inaccurate. Even if the plan denies it internally, push forward to an external review so someone outside the company has a chance to review, she said.
In the case of "medical necessity" denials, Kelmar recommended patients work with the medical provider to provide more information to the insurance company to underscore why an emergency transport was required.
Doctors who write a letter or make a call to a patient's insurer explaining a decision can also ask for a "peer-to-peer review," meaning they would discuss the case with a medical expert in their field.
Kelmar said patients with employer-sponsored health plans can ask their employer's human resources department to advocate for them with the health plan. It's in the employers' best interest since they often pay a lot for these health plans, she said.
No matter what, Kelmar said, patients shouldn't let fear stop them from appealing a medical bill. Patients who appeal have a high likelihood of winning, she said.
Patients with government health coverage can further appeal insurance denials by filing a complaint with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Those who believe they have received an inappropriate bill from an out-of-network provider can call the No Surprises Act help desk at 1-800-985-3059.
What we know about the six construction workers missing after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse
The families of multiple construction workers presumed dead after a bridge in the US city of Baltimore was struck by an out-of-control cargo ship are facing a desperate wait for answers.
Search efforts for the six missing workers have been suspended until Wednesday morning local time.
The men, who worked for Brawner Builders, had been replacing concrete on  the Francis Scott Key Bridge at 1:30am Tuesday (4:30pm AEDT) when its pylon was hit, sending it crashing into the Patapsco River below.
There were eight workers in total – two have been rescued, with one seriously injured and taken to hospital.
The others are now presumed to have died.
What we know about the victims
Miguel Luna, 49, is among those missing, according to his wife Maria del Carmen Castellon.
"They only tell us that we have to wait, that for now, they can't give us information," she told news station Telemundo 44.
"[We feel] devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don't know if they've rescued them yet.
"We're just waiting to hear any news."
Mr Luna was "a husband, a father of three, and has called Maryland his home for over 19 years," local non-profit CASA said in a statement.
The organisation, which provides services to the immigrant community in Baltimore, added Mr Luna was "a longtime member of our CASA family".
His son, Marvin Luna, said he did not hear about the bridge collapse until friends called him.
He knew his father, who had been with the company for more than a decade, was working on the bridge. When he called, the phone went unanswered.
"We're okay right now because we don't know yet, nothing about my dad," he told the Washington Post.
"But we still wait."
'Wonderful family people'
Carlos Suazo told a local news station his brother Maynor Suazo, originally from Honduras, was among the missing.
"[Authorities] have assisted us but they leave us very worried," he said through a translator.
Honduras' Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio García also told Associated Press that a Honduran citizen, Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, was missing.
He said he had been in contact with Mr Suazo's family.
Jesus Campos, another Brawner Builders employee, said he had been working on the bridge doing the same construction work, but a recent change had moved him to the morning shift.
"I could have been there like my coworkers," he said.
"We're low-income families ... Our relatives are waiting for our help back in our home countries."
Brawner's executive vice-president Jeffrey Pritzker told local media the incident was a "totally unforeseen event which no one could have predicted".
"The company is upset, families are distressed, this is a terrible tragedy," he said.
"I don't know what more I can say.
"They were wonderful family people, spouses, children ... It's just a very, very bad day."
Officials confirm two Guatemalan nationals missing
Mr Campos told local media the men were from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
He said the workers ranged in age from about 30 to 45 and all had families.
"They are fathers of families. They are people who come to earn their daily bread," Mr Campos said.
Officials from Guatemala have since confirmed two of the men were Guatemalan nationals.
"Two Guatemalans, 26 and 35 years old, originally from San Luis, Petén and Camotán, Chiquimula, respectively; are missing," officials said in a statement.
"The Consul General of Guatemala in Maryland was able to establish telephone communication with the brothers of the two missing Guatemalans.
"One of them could confirm his origin from San Luis, Petén, since there is a record of a passport being processed in 2018.
"[For] the other person there is still no precise confirmation of origin because there is no record of the procedure.
"There is only verbal confirmation from the brother, who indicates that they are originally from Camotán, Chiquimula.
"The Consul General went to the area where the families of those affected are located, where she hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both compatriots."
Authorities in Mexico and Honduras have also stated they are working to confirm the nationalities and identities of the men involved.
Baltimore officials and parishioners attended an hour-long vigil at a nearby church on Tuesday night local time.
Another vigil for the men is to be held on Wednesday morning.
Is your life in balance?
Does your family feel stressed too? What a Day!
Determining Your Priorities • What are the essential components to a quality life? • What are you truly passionate about in life? • What do you value most? • Rank order these areas of your life according to the amount of time and energy you spend on each.
Values and Prioritizing • Many of us are very knowledgeable about taking care of ourselves. • We know we should: • Eat right • Exercise daily • Make time for relaxation • Pursue spiritual wants and needs WE KNOW IT SO WHY DON’T WE …..
Values and Prioritizing ……DO IT??? The number one reason that most people give for not doing what they feel they “should” do is? TIME!
Managing Your Priorities • Time and energy must be spent on priorities. • Utilize a system that will serve to remind you of your priorities. • Plan time to refuel the tank.
Work-Life Balance Learn how to say YES as well as NO It’s easier to say no to unwanted tasks if you’ve already committed to something you do want to do.
Work-Life Balance Establish your ABSENCE as well as your PRESENCE Set a schedule for being physically elsewhere and unavailable, and stick to it.
Work-Life Balance Do a LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING as well as ALL OF ONE THING Master the art of multitasking.
Work-Life Balance Determine your TASKS as well as your PRIORITIES Many activities, small and large, are the steps that lead to your goal.
Work-Life Balance Work until your TIME IS UP as well as until your TASK IS DONE Approach every task with the goal of making progress during a specific amount of time, then move on to the next task to maintain forward momentum.
Work-Life Balance Bring some of your HOME TO WORK well as some of your WORK TO HOME You live in both worlds; look for ways to bring them together
Work-Life Balance Seek to INTEGRATE YOUR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL ACTIVITIES as well as to SEPARATE WORK AND PLAY Doing so can maximize your effectiveness and satisfaction in both spheres.
Evaluating a Stressful Lifestyle Using Life Goals • Work: Performance objectives, challenge, opportunity to learn, sense of accomplishment, financial rewards, relationships with coworkers, subordinates, supervisors • Family: Quantity and quality of time spent with spouse, significant other, children, parents, siblings, extended family • Personal: Leisure activities, social life, physical health, spiritual development • We constantly juggle these goals, shifting time and energy between goals and trying not to “drop the ball” for any goal. • This juggling act reflects the amount of stress in our lives.
Stress Management • Lifestyle Techniques • Time Management • Cognitive Restructuring • Relaxation Techniques
1. Lifestyle Techniques for Managing Stress • Social Support • Communication Skills • Healthy Diet • Adequate Sleep • Regular Exercise
Desk Yoga 1. Neck Rolls • Let your chin drop down to your chest. • Begin to circle your neck slowly, taking the right ear to the right shoulder, the head back, and then the left ear to the left shoulder. • Try to keep the shoulders relaxed and not to hurry through areas of tightness. • Take 3-5 rolls and then switch directions and take another 3-5 rolls.
Desk Yoga 2. Cat – Cow Stretch • Bring both feet flat on the floor. Bring your hands onto your knees. • On an inhale, arch the back and look up toward the ceiling. • On the exhale, round the spine and let your head drop forward. • Repeat for 3-5 breaths.
Desk Yoga 3. Seated Forward Bend • Push your chair back from your desk. Bring both feet flat on the floor. • Interlace your fingers behind your back. • Straighten your arms, drawing the interlaced fingers down. • Fold at the waist, bringing your interlaced hands over your back. • Rest your chest on your thighs and release your neck.
Desk Yoga 4. Eagle Arms • Take your arms out to either side, parallel to the floor. Bring the arms forward, crossing the right arm over the left and bringing the palms to touch. • Lift the elbows while keeping the shoulders sliding down your back. • Repeat with the left arm over the right.
Desk Yoga 5. Seated Spinal Twist • Turn so you are sitting sideways in your chair. Bring both feet flat on the floor. • Twist towards the back of the chair, holding the back with both hands. • Turn the chair the other way and repeat.
Desk Yoga 6. Wrist Stretch • Stand up. Turn your hands so that the wrists face your computer and the fingers face the edge of the desk. • Lean in to the wrists and flatten your palms as much as possible. • Back off if you feel pain.
2. Time Management The Problem is Severe • By some estimates, people waste about 2 hours per day.  • Signs of time wasting: • Messy desk and cluttered (or no) files • Can't find things • Miss appointments, need to reschedule them late and/or unprepared for meetings • Volunteer to do things other people should do • Tired/unable to concentrate
How we spend our day
Morning Person Long Concentration Procrastinator Work well under a deadline Extrovert Night Owl Short Concentration Do things NOW Don’t work well under a deadline Introvert Know Yourself
Manage Yourself • Schedule hard work during your “up” time • Break up projects into manageable segments • “To do” lists with deadlines • Do high priority work when you work best • Know how to recharge your energy!
Be “Time Wise” • Do it now • Say no • Start projects as soon as they are assigned • Divide each task into small, manageable chunks • Use small pockets of time well • Use your best time well • Don’t put things off • Turn off the TV • Try the 10-minute ticker
3. Cognitive Restructuring How Can you Change the Way you Think About Stress? • Don’t worry about things you can’t control • Regain control: problem solve & ID solutions • Reasonable expectations • Sense of humor • Flexibility with self & others
Relaxation Techniques • Progressive relaxation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxQJIiu9tK0 • Visualization or Imagery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf3IIYbllts • Mediation • Deep Breathing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j5Z4E2wkh4 • Biofeedback
Stress Management • May require a variety of methods • Must learn to recognize the body’s negative signals and what causes them • Recreate stressful events and consider different outcomes • Avoid or minimize contact with stressor • Change attitudes and/or situations
If all else fails…
