Films or movies, we all have been watching them since the advent of cinema and television in our lives. Earlier there was just a national channel which would show movies on weekends saving you the effort of going to the hall. Then we had cable television, a whole lot of movies to watch - English, Hindi, Punjabi etc. The internet made the scope of watching films even broader, download them and watch at your own convenience.

Careers in the film industry were no longer a taboo and many relocated to greener pastures and movie industry revenue ensured its propagation. Today, United States, Nigeria, Hong Kong and India are the leaders in filmmaking In Europe, France and the United Kingdom are the countries that lead in movie production. India is the largest producer of films in the world. The USA has a whole district - Hollywood in Los Angeles which caters exclusively to the movie industry. The actors, directors producers, singers are big names and bankable too. In this grandeur and showbiz, we didn’t actually pay much attention or didn’t bother to evaluate the effect of movies on youth and more importantly the impact of films on society. What is the role of movies in our lives, are movies harmful or beneficial or both? To evaluate the worth of films, we need to weigh the pros and cons of movies. We also need to come to an understanding; how much importance should we give or not give to films?

Benefits or Advantages of Movies

Entertainment: Movies are a source of popular entertainment. From the moment we indulge in watching a movie, we are transformed into a new world where our mind is at ease, it forgets everything and is concentrated at watching. Everybody wants to relax and be amused. Every age of people, young and old, literate and illiterate want recreation. Recreation is an important part of life and movies provide that avenue. Watching a film on a theatre can be an exhilarating experience in itself. This is because a large number of people are doing the same thing. The audience laughs together, applauds and shares almost the same emotions. This collective effort experienced by the viewers makes the experience more entertaining and enjoyable.
Socialising Activators: Films are social activators, they allow even unknown people to mingle with each other. We all see movies and it is a common factor amongst us. This common factor can initiate and or sustain a conversation with a stranger. We have opinions about movies and these also help in socialization through conversation and debate. When we go to a cinema or a theatre to watch a movie we socialize with our friends, relatives, peers etc. The movie is a social art form which brings together all genres of people even if they have different views about the movie.
A Lesson of Teamwork: A movie is a collaborative work; it requires actors, cinematographers, directors, make-up artists, writers, visual effects specialists, technicians, and others. When this movie is applauded by all is shows the power of teamwork. It is also a lesson for all; that teamwork pays. Some films themselves are based on the theme of ‘teamwork’. Showcase of World’s Art and Culture: Many of the customs and traditions of different parts of the world are shown in movies. While sitting at our homes we are able to travel virtually to places where we cannot imagine, to be. Most of the movies show customs and arts of foreign countries. They give us insights about human activities and a better understanding of people of the world. Without movies, we wouldn’t come to know about ‘Muay Thai’ or ‘Ninjas’ or any of the things that we know today.
Films Educate Us: Films are a platter of various disciplines, they show us history, culture, science, technology, politics and lot more. These are reflections of society, both present, and past. Movies show the aftermath of a war, social evils, political strategies, human rights infringement and various other sensitive issues. Films Inspire Us: Films inspire us in more than ways that we can imagine. Some profound inspirations are given to us by inspirational movies. Similarly, when movies win certain awards it arouses within us an urge to shine in our respective field of work.
Employment and Revenue: It is not a hidden fact that movies generate a lot of employment and revenue to the treasury, not only through the films but even through its peripheral forms like merchandising, tourism, film training etc. As per one study, in 2009, the global box office revenues were over US$30 billion. People go to movies, rent them, download them and they themselves publicise them through ‘Word of Mouth’. The film industry supports a vast array of professionals like - designers, dressmakers, photographers, story writer, technicians, and others. Poets and authors have also benefited from this medium as their works have been adapted to movies, fetching them royalty and other benefits.
Quick Fame: One movie can make you a star overnight and it happens with many of the actors and directors. It is a matter of luck that a certain newcomer or a struggling actor gets a movie which takes him to unscaled heights. Sometimes a small role in a movie makes you highly popular and you adorn the magazine covers, websites, television etc. You become a household name in an instant; you are worshipped, cheered and adored by the masses. There is a saying that – ‘There is no business like show business’ and all the stars that you see will totally agree with the adage.

Disadvantages of Films

Movies Profess Violence: There is no denying that movies today are more violent than ever before. And it is very clear with the shootings at schools by kid and teenagers that they are being heavily influenced by violence shown is movies. To shock, the audience’s filmmakers choose this theme. Surprisingly, these become cult movies with a fan following of their own. Movies like these show new ways of torture and physical abuse which inspires the young mind to indulge in these acts. Movies like Hostel, Saw, Friday the 13 th and their kin are nothing but violent movies with unnecessary blood and gore. As per reports from Researchers followed 329 subjects over 15 years. They found that those who as children were exposed to violent TV shows were much more likely to later be convicted of the crime. Researchers said that "Media violence can affect any child from any family," regardless of social class or parenting. Girls who watched more than an average amount of violence tended to throw things at their husbands. Boys who grew up watching violent TV shows were more likely to be violent with their wives. Researchers concluded in Developmental Psychology that, "Every violent TV show increases a little-bit the likelihood of a child growing up to behave more aggressively." By the time the average U.S. child starts elementary school, he or she will have seen 8,000 murders and 100,00 acts of violence on TV.” - New Scientist, 2007.
Movies are made for Profit: Ever heard of a movie made for charity, hard to say? In this cash striven lives who cares for a charity, perhaps none. The entertainment industry is even more selfish than any industry can be. Consider, people dropping their clothes for money just for a movie. Then we can consider the underlying motive that ‘Movies are solely made for Profit’. This profit influences the movie makers to showcase nudity and explicit sexual acts; there is a popular sub-industry of the latter one as well. The film industry people are no more worried about public morality; they will show what appears instantly to the senses. Even good filmmakers like Mahesh Bhatt, Ekta Kapoor resort to ‘Jism 2’ and ‘Dirty Picture’ which appeal to our lower instincts. By making such movies they bend our mentality to accept them, knowingly or unknowingly. Young people don’t have the maturity to understand these motives, they find these appealing and there becomes an audience to which aforesaid cater to. Stars and makers of such lewd movies inspire the upcoming generations to accept these and the chain goes on and on.
Establish False Notions: Some movies portray certain subjects or themes in a way which is far from real. Such portrayals establish false notions amongst the people. Many of the Sikhs are joked upon because of their turban and jolly nature. Their turban makes them Taliban and their jolly nature conjure mockery. Similarly, masala dosa becomes the identity of south Indian people and most black people are shown as gangsters. Every community has its individuality, tastes and flaws but that alone is not their true identity. Fools, ugly people are distributed across the communities. Establishing an opinion based on certain aspects of a community encourages racism and other anti-social sentiments which hinder the peace and prosperity of the world.
Wastage of Money and Time: Majority of the movies are not really worth watching but still, we watch them. This happens because we are enticed by appealing posters, teasing trailers, publicity and other marketing strategies. This is done to ensure that the movie earns at least more than the cost involved. Take a look at the movies today, they are sequels, there are aliens, vampires, werewolves and if not anything there are special effects of all sorts. We have seen so much that there is very little left to amuse us. The actual movie may not be that good but it is the package which lures us. We don’t realise that we are wasting our money, our precious time, eyes and efforts on something undeserving.
Art Form of Personal Opinion: It has been truly said that ‘Movie is an Art Form’ but the art form is many times based on one’s personal imagination. This imagination is at times contradictory to the truth. For a filmmaker, it is his personal take on a theme, which may not be in tandem with the truth, maybe false, disturbing or distorted. An art form to become meaningful should be honest and true towards its representation. Certain modifications are acceptable but modifications need to be monitored closely as to where they are being implemented. Giving biased opinions and delving into half-baked truths leads to controversy and conflict. One’s personal opinion may hurt sentiments of the certain community, individual and or the society. Such a biased art form only contradicts itself.
Adultery and Premature Sex: Majority of the Hollywood movies have nudity and sex scenes. And the majority of the times, there is no actual need to include such. It appears that it has become a norm to have such scenes either as an attraction point or selling point. Teenage movies are the ones that often show things like virginity, sexual escapades, fantasies etc. But pornographic movies come straight to the point. Such images and audio as found in these movies corrupt the senses, even of the adults. While the younger generation becomes prematurely sex-conscious and imitates the scenes of films in their real life, the adult generation is guided towards adultery. A population of such people implies a diseased society both mentally and physically.
Meagre or No Respect for Law and Order: Heroes shooting at cops, assassinators killing presidents and villains raping women all have one thing in common, lawlessness. Movies proliferate the idea that it is cool to break law or that it is not a big deal to break law. This attitude is picked up very easily and quickly by the young of mind. Bullying, stealing, shoplifting, threatening, gang making, verbal abuse, touting weapons etc. are the most common effects of movies which show lawlessness. Criminal tendencies are aggregated by movies which show violent acts against the law upholders or even a common citizen. Movie based games do the same, thereby initiating a negative mindset.
Larger than Life Characters: Once again it is the young mind which is unable to distinguish reality from fiction. Powerful human beings, superheroes, skilled fighters, stunts and acrobatics are surreal but not to your 4 to 5 years old kid. For him, these larger than life characters are real than anything else. Though aping your idols is a common thing but when it becomes an innate part of a kid, he/she will harm others and the own self. A startling example is that of ‘Ninja Turtles’; around the time when it became a hit, certain kids actually started living in drains. Movies show that everything is possible but not everything, becoming spiderman through a spider bite, many of us have actually been bitten by spiders and have often imagined of becoming a spiderman, but we haven’t.
Means to Propaganda: In a move to earn popularity and money, some filmmakers take on controversial topics. It is an old formula but an existent tried and tested one. Often such movies become a national agenda out of nowhere. It is the acts of politicians and pressure groups who need mileage or want to distract the public attention from a certain issue. History can be searched when movies have become a scapegoat of uproar, agitations and protests thereby making a mountain out of ant hill. Taking care of such situations requires capital and man force which unnecessarily puts a burden on the national expenditure.
Quick Downfall: Movies without movie stars is unacceptable. While stars are born overnight, so is their downfall. The fate of an actor rests on a hit movie. It can make or break a person. Many ambitious people have strived for this fame but have tasted the dust. Some become desperate and will do anything. For others, it is a matter of death and honour for others it is a life of nightmare. There are more failures than stars but those that are stars shine like anything. The pursue this elusive sheen is sometimes compromising on your character. Casting couches are true; though very few will come forward, it is also a downfall of the character of a person.
The popularity of Unideal Role Models: Films are remembered for their story, direction etc. but mostly they are remembered by the actors. They become our role models, we want to become like them. They are more popular than real life heroes and get more recognition than anyone else. Let’s not forget that the heroes we applaud have become heroes at our own expense and because of the marketing strategy. If real life heroes were also marketed the same but then real-life heroes aren’t glamorous or perform stunts. We know more entertainment celebrities than those who really make a difference in the world. How many of us know about an ordinary man who did extraordinary to save others? The world is full of brave, strong, handsome, innovative, intelligent, life-saving people who carry on with their lives without expecting any applaud. But their achievements are dwarfed by a giant poster of movies with their glamorous star cast publicised throughout the whole world.
Addiction to Movies: Addictions come in many forms and one of them is that of movies. Many amongst us suffer from complexities of life and instead of finding a real-life solution we end up finding a solution which is harmful to us, health-wise or otherwise. The addiction to movies can be expensive if we go to malls or theatres. The addiction to movies can affect our mental and physical health if we watch them at home. We start paying more attention to movies than any other thing. We neglect exercise and become couch potatoes. Our main concern becomes the release dates, the booking, the downloading, the exchanging, the trailers, wallpapers and so on. It becomes a futile pursuit but we keep indulging in it as it is convenient, just turn on the TV and start watching or search the internet for it. When we have seen the best ones, what’s left? The ordinary or useless ones amuse us because of their stupidity or nonsensical approach. Even when we may have a sense that this film is not worth watching we watch it because others are watching it and watching in a group is more exciting. Sometimes we forget that we have seen a certain film, we have a hazy remembrance of it, we watch it to actually prove ourselves wrong or right about the movie In this effort we don’t realise that we are getting addicted to movie watching.
Conflicting Personalities: If actors are unideal heroes they also happen to have unideal personas, i.e. that what they portray on cinema, they aren’t the same in real life. Sometimes even adults have to come to terms with this reality. As humans we are judgemental, we make opinions about someone even when we don’t know them fully. The actors are seen as role models and they have a certain responsibility towards society. But more often than not, we witness that our favourite hero, heroine, director etc. aren’t the same as they appeared on-screen. Some of them are drug addicts, some indulge in adultery, some are chain smokers, some are cowards; mostly the opposite of what they have been portrayed. For them, it may not matter but for the ardent fans, it is a great setback. They saw an amazing physique, a beautiful face and a strong character. But it turned out that it is all fake. Their assets are fake, they are surgically or chemically enhanced and or improved. It is a shock for them to know that the one they vouched for, is fake, it is emotionally disturbing and creates conflict in mind. It becomes puzzling as to what is real and what is not? It throws them off-balance of their and the views of the world. Even adults are shocked when they come to know of a certain negative aspect of an actor. Though, they are humans but not ordinary ones, at least for the fans.

Conclusion There are always and there always be ‘Two Sides of a Coin’, similarly, there are merits and demerits of films. Many of you may not find advantages and disadvantages suiting to your personal opinion but that doesn’t lessen their gravity. As pointed out in the above paragraphs, the scale tips in the favour of disadvantages of movies. Films do more harm than good and the good here, cannot negate the bad, unlike in the movies. It may sound strange and weird but it is true. And it doesn’t even mean that one should stop watching movies. Watch only a few and forget the rest, there are much better things to do in life than spending time on overhyped and low-quality movies. Some of the pros and cons of Films are evident; we can see them all around us. But the negative points are not easily perceived, remain unpublicised and are therefore lesser known. The positive points of movies shine in front of us, they are easily perceived, can be seen everywhere and the film industry itself publicises it. The underlining point is that watch only quality movies, your decision in abstaining from cheap movies will have a positive effect on filmmakers. Porn and violent films are popular because there is a demand if the demand ceases so will the supply. The government also needs to take steps to discourage and eventually stop the production of movies which tend to corrupt. More importantly, a compulsory short feature should be shown to educate the people of all ages about the truth and reality shown in the movies.

Therefore, one has to choose whether to stream movies alone at home or go to a movie theater with friends and family. There are many differences between watching a movie at home and in theatres. The cost, for instance, is different. The advantages of more insular viewing habits relate to individual convenience. Firstly, this concerns choice. A Netflix subscriber is able to choose from a wide range of current and past entertainment without having to consult others. This means they are more likely to choose programming relevant to their tastes. Secondly, watching shows alone allows for greater flexibility. An individual can pause, switch to another program, re-watch shows, and transition between a variety of portable devices. Each of these decisions does not require negotiation with others and can be made depending on a person’s mood and preferences.

However, I believe the tradeoffs related to social cohesion are more pressing concerns. Society has become increasingly insular in general due to the pervasiveness of one-sided technological interactions on devices such as smartphones and laptops. This transition has loosened social bonds between family members, friends, significant others, and society at large. In the past, a family might watch a television show together, joke about it, discuss it, and then have a common point of reference for later conversations. This is now less likely and many consumers now spend an outsized amount of time alone, limiting their exposure to other perspectives. Over time, the effects on mental health and social unity may be drastic and difficult to reverse.

In conclusion, although watching shows alone has benefits in terms of personal choice, the drawbacks related to social interaction make it a negative on the whole. Individuals should strive to limit the time they spend alone watching TV shows and movies.

It is true that the omnipresence of streaming services and personal computers has contributed to individuals these days eschewing watching entertainment with others in favor of doing these activities alone. Although this may bring great levels of convenience for individuals, this is a negative development on the whole. The primary benefit of insular viewing habits pertains to personal convenience. This is because individuals can choose to watch movies or TV channels wherever and whenever they want without consulting others. Enjoying entertainment with others, on the other hand, can be problematic as individuals have to find a suitable time for everyone to watch together, which is not always possible given their hectic schedules these days. Furthermore, since each person has his or her unique interests regarding entertainment, a compromise needs to be reached between viewers to find a movie or a program that everyone can enjoy. The process of choosing a type of entertainment compatible with all individuals’ tastes is likely to result in disagreements or even conflicts, which potentially hurts their relationships as a result. Nonetheless, the aforementioned advantage is far dwarfed by the disadvantage of increasing isolation. The truth is that individuals these days are exceedingly busy with numerous responsibilities such as working, housework, or child-raising. Worse still, they have to spend an oversized amount of time traveling to work on a daily basis, leaving them little time being around their families and friends. This means that the time for watching entertainment together can be of enormous value for them to be together, discuss, joke, or comment about what they are watching, which is obviously unavailable to watching alone. The situation is made worse when independent watching habits may loosen family bonds, which is a possible precursor to future mental problems. In conclusion, while the convenience of enjoying entertainment alone is undeniable, I am strongly convinced it is overwhelmingly outweighed by the disadvantage of individuals becoming excessively isolated.

Using a psychosemantic technique that included 25 scales designed to identify attitudes towards elderly people, respondents evaluated their various characteristics before and after watching the film. Using a number of characteristics related to the motivational, emotional and cognitive spheres, significant changes were revealed. At the same time, significant differences were found in assessments of the elderly between undergraduate students and postgraduate students. After watching the film, postgraduate students’ attitudes towards elderly people changed in a positive way, while undergraduate students’ negative assessments only worsened. The revealed opposite trends can be explained by individual differences of respondents, which include age, educational status as an indicator of individual psychological characteristics, the experience of interaction with elderly people and, as a result, attitudes towards elderly people at the time before watching the movie. The finding that previous attitudes mediate the impact of the film complements the ideas of the contribution of individual differences to media effects. Most of the changes detected immediately after watching the movie did not remain over time. A single movie viewing did not have a lasting effect on viewers’ attitudes, and it suggests the further task of identifying mechanisms of the sustainability of changes.

1. Introduction

With the development of information technology, a person’s immersion in the field of mass media is steadily increasing. A significant portion of consumed media products is occupied by cinema. According to sociological surveys, going to the cinema is the most popular way of spending leisure time in Russia today ( http://www.fond-kino.ru/news/kto-ty-rossijskij-kinozritel/ ); the audiences of cinemas are growing, the core of which are 18-24 years olds, as well as the frequency of visits—every tenth Russian goes to the cinema several times a month ( https://wciom.ru/index.php?id=236&uid=1785 ; https://wciom.ru/fileadmin/file/reports_conferences/2018/2018-04-03_kino.pdf ; http://www.fond-kino.ru/news/portret-kinoauditorii-rezultaty-monitoringa-za-i-kvartal-2019-goda/ ), the opportunities and frequency of Internet viewings is expanding, while interest in TV shows is also increasing. The importance of the role that cinema plays in Russia is also confirmed by the close attention currently being paid to the development of the cinema industry: the priority topics of state financing are defined (e.g., “Law and order: the heroes of modern society in the fight against crime terror, extremism and corruption”, “On the continuity of military generations, on the successors of military traditions”, "Images, patterns of behavior and creative motivation of our contemporary—a man of labor, in the military or a scientist"), while state programs are being launched to open new cinema theatres in small towns. Сinema becomes a “tool for broadcasting state ideology to the masses” (according to S. Zizek [ 1 ]), and is also being considered as a “means of individual and social transformation” (according to T. Kashani [ 2 ]) [ 3 ]. As a result, films are expected to form beliefs, influence opinions and change attitudes, including towards topical social issues.

However, the question of the efficiency of films remains open in psychology. In general, this is a key issue for mass communication research: how much emotion, cognition and behavior are changed under the influence of mass media [ 4 , 5 ]. There are various concepts about this: from “theories of a minimal effect” to “theories of a strong effect” [ 6 ]. Thus, for example, cultivation theory considers that mass communication contributes to the assimilation of commonly accepted values, norms and forms of behavior [ 7 ]; and a meta-analysis of studies leads to the conclusion that there is a relationship between the broadcast mass media image of reality and people’s attitudes towards it [ 8 , 9 ]. Despite criticisms, cultivation theory is currently being developed [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. On the other hand, supporters of the opposite viewpoint point out the weak effects of mass communication, caused, for example, by the fact that people are becoming more and more subject of their mass media activity as a result of a wider variety of sources of information now and expanding their choices [ 14 , 15 ].

It seems difficult to identify a single mechanism of mass media impact on the human psyche and behavior and to obtain an unambiguous answer to the question about its efficiency [ 6 ]. This is due to the interconnection of various factors that mediate the influence of mass media (personal experience, realistic content, depth of identification with heroes, personality traits, etc.) [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], as well as those factors that constantly impact persons besides those in the media. Therefore, our thoughts and ideas about this issue are largely based on empirical research data, and are not limited to one theory [ 19 ].

When referring to research of cinema, we can find data on the diverse effects of film exposure. It should be noted that the effectiveness of the impact is determined by what it is directed at: it is more difficult to change human behavior than to influence opinions or attitudes [ 4 , 6 ]. In this regard, there is still a debatable problem on the influence of the media on the aggressive behavior of people [ 20 ]. This research focuses on the potential of pro-social, "humanistic" impact of films and their effectiveness in solving topical social issues. The studies reveal the influence of films on people’s beliefs and opinions, stereotypes and attitudes. Movies can have a significant impact on gender and ethnic stereotypes [ 21 , 22 ], change attitudes towards certain groups of people and cause newly formed opinions on various issues. For example, HIV films contributed to sympathy to people living with HIV [ 4 ], TV series with transgender characters contributed to positive attitudes towards transgender persons [ 23 ]; the portrayal of mental disorders in movies had an effect on people’s knowledge about and attitudes toward the mentally ill [ 24 , 25 ]. Also, viewing an empathy-arousing film about immigrants induced more positive attitudes toward them [ 26 ], and watching a movie offering a positive depiction of gay men reduced homophobia [ 27 ]. Other films influenced people’s attitude towards smoking and their intentions to quit [ 28 , 29 ], while a series with a positive donation message helped viewers to make decisions about their own donation [ 30 ]. It has been shown that emotional involvement in viewing, evaluated using surveys drawing on theories of social learning and social representations, increases the effectiveness of influence [ 30 ]; immersion in narrative, that correlates with the need for cognition, and is characterized by a shift of focus from the real world to the depicted one, explains the power of impact within the framework of transportation theory [ 31 , 32 ].

Cinema can change people’s opinions on specific issues without affecting more stable constructs: for example, the film “JFK” dedicated to the Kennedy assassination influenced judgments about the causes of this crime, but generally did not change the political beliefs of the audience [ 33 ]; at the same time, the movies “Argo” and “Zero Dark Thirty” changed viewers’ opinions about the U.S. government that reflected in an improvement in sentiments about this government and its institutions [ 34 ]. Movies create images of other countries and stimulate interest in them. For example, European films shaped young viewers’ ideas about other European countries—such results were obtained in a study of the role of films and series in the daily life of young Germans through interviews and focus groups [ 35 ]. Another study showed that whether the movies were violent, scary or happy, the more the viewers were immersed in the stories, the more favorable impressions they had of the places featured in them [ 36 ].

Various positive effects of films on children and adolescents were revealed. Dramatic films taught teenagers about social interaction with the opposite sex and adults [ 37 ], had a positive impact on their self-concept [ 38 ], and, as shown by experiments, increased ethnic tolerance [ 39 ]; humanistically oriented movies improved skills of children in communicating with peers, increased their desire to help and understand others [ 40 , 41 ].

One of the prime examples of positive impact is Cli-fi movies, which clearly show what we can expect in the near future, and offers ways to think about what can be done to avoid the darkest predictions. Thus, after watching the film “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004), viewers recognized their responsibility for the Earth’s ecology and the need to change consumer attitudes towards nature [ 42 ]. In general, the screening of films on climate issues increases the number of online requests and media discussions on these issues [ 43 ].

It should be noted that when analyzing the impact of films, conclusions about their effectiveness are the result of different methodological approaches, which have varying advantages and limitations. Content analysis reveals the images, attitudes, stereotypes broadcast by films (e.g., stereotypical portrayals of India [ 44 ], or images of scientists and current scientific ideas [ 45 ]) on large data sets; however, questions remain about effectiveness, strength and sustainability of the impact on the audience. The influence of films can be investigated through a survey of viewers; based on this, conclusions are drawn about the links between a person’s attitudes and his/her viewer experience, such as in the study of gender attitudes and their correlations with teen movie-viewing habits [ 21 ]. In experimental studies, exposure effects are detected using pre- and post-film questionnaires; however, the time interval between testing and a film screening, such as a few weeks before viewing the film or a several days after [ 26 , 27 , 29 ], can lead to distortion of the results that are caused by the influence on the viewers’ attitudes of other factors besides the film; moreover, usually it is not investigated whether new attitudes are retained over time. Often the effects of films are analyzed in experimental conditions where participants watch only short cut scenes from existing films [ 24 ], which limits the extrapolation of the results.

According to the empirical orientation of our approach, the goal was to obtain new data on the positive impact of films based on a specific experimental study. The task was to identify changes in young people’s attitudes towards topical social issues after watching a specifically selected film. Participants had to watch the full version of an existing fiction film. They were tested just before and immediately after watching the movie in order to avoid the influence of other variables on viewers’ attitudes. Repeated testing (two weeks after the first viewing) was intended to reveal the sustainability of the changes caused by the film.

In the process of developing the design of the work, it was specified what attitudes would be studied. The choice was determined, first of all, by the social relevance of the topic, but outside the focus of the media in order to reduce the impact of other media sources, and on the other hand, by the availability of a suitable film. Important topics as ethnic stereotypes, attitudes toward people with disabilities, etc. were considered. However, the choice of the topics had to be restricted for various reasons. For example, identifying attitudes toward certain professions (e.g., engineer), whose prestige has significantly declined in Russia in recent decades, was difficult due to the lack of relevant films popularizing them. At the same time, despite the availability of humanistically oriented films dedicated to people with disabilities, the identification of changes in attitudes to them was complicated by the need to take into account additional factors caused by increased attention to the topic and active discussion in various media, which could distort the influence of a film.

Given the limitations and opportunities for the implementation of research tasks, the subject of this study the attitudes towards elderly people. At present, attention to the topic concerning elderly people is growing in Russia, but there is still a prevalence of negative stereotypes [ 46 ]. A characteristic manifestation of age discrimination against the elderly—ageism—is a biased attitude towards them, especially among young people, as well as a low assessment of their intellectual abilities, activity and "usefulness" for society.

Studies show that the mass media have a significant impact on negative attitudes towards the elderly [ 47 ]: children have already demonstrated the same stereotypes of the elderly that were depicted in the media [ 48 ], while young people at large viewed the elderly in general as ineffective, dependent, lonely, poor, angry and disabled, which corresponded to the negative representations of elderly people in the most popular teen movies that cultivated their stereotypes [ 49 ]. Research of TV films from the 1980s–1990s revealed the stereotypes of elderly people as being social outsiders [ 50 ], but at the same time a display of positive prejudice contributed to an increase in tolerance towards them within society.

Improving the attitudes of young people towards elderly people is an important social and educational task, the solution of which involves the use of diverse opportunities. Various social projects can be implemented for this purpose, for example, "friendly visitor" types of programs in which young people visit the elderly [ 51 , 52 ], but also mass media, including films, which have a high potential for impact [ 53 , 54 ]. It was found that watching documentary films had a positive effect on both knowledge about aging and attitudes towards the elderly [ 55 ]; these films significantly improved empathy towards elderly people among university students [ 56 ].

We suggested that fiction movies, popular especially among young people, could contribute to changing existing biased attitudes towards elderly people. Based on this, the hypothesis states that there is a connection between watching a positive film about the elderly and changes in young people’s attitudes towards them in a positive way.

2.1. Participants

A total of 70 individuals participated in this study. Group one contained 40 students of The State Academic University for Humanities (25% male and 75% female). The average age was 19 (M = 19, standard deviation SD = 2.4). Group two consisted of 30 postgraduate students from Russian Academy of Sciences (47% male and 53 % female). The average age was 24 (M = 24, standard deviation SD = 1.6).

All subjects gave their informed consent for inclusion before they participated in the study. The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and was approved by the local ethics committee (Review Board).

2.2. Materials

2.2.1. film.

The film—“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2011), the main characters of which were elderly people, was chosen to be shown to the respondents ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1412386/ ). Prior to this, a qualitative analysis of empirical material revealed the impact of this film on the attitudes towards elderly people among Russian viewers of different ages. Their reviews on the film, taken from Internet resources devoted to cinema, indicated cognitive effects, expressed in positive changes of ideas about the elderly; the film was perceived quite optimistically and gave hope [ 19 ]. It was supposed that the movie that humorously shows various situations happening to the elderly heroes would also affect the opinion of young people about elderly people, as it allowed to look at them from new viewpoints, to see that age is not an obstacle to having a full life, and even, conversely, open up new prospects.

2.2.2. Measures

To achieve the goal of the study, a psychosemantic approach is used, which is the most appropriate for studying a person’s attitudes towards various objects of reality by reconstructing individual meanings [ 57 ]. This approach allows us to determine the differences in evaluations of the same object (caused by mass media as well), made by different groups of respondents at different times. For example, changes in the stereotypes of viewers were revealed in relation to representatives of another nation (Russians about the Japanese) during viewing of a TV show [ 57 ]. In this work, the psychosemantic technique was used, developed specifically to identify attitudes towards the elderly (based on the Kelly’s Repertoire lattice method) [ 46 ]. The technique included 25 7-point scales, according to which respondents rated elderly people. For comparative analysis, the modern youth were evaluated by participants with the same scales.

The respondents also noted the frequency of watching movies ("every day"/"several times a week"/"several times a month"/"several times a year and less"), and evaluated the level of enjoying the film shown ("did not like"/"rather did not like than liked"/"rather liked than disliked"/"liked").

2.3. Procedure

The study was conducted in three stages: the respondents filled out the psychosemantic test before watching the film, then immediately after viewing and again in 2 weeks. During stage 3, only group one participated in the study.

The respondents did not see the film before participating in the study.

2.4. Statistical Methods

In accordance with the data characteristics, non-parametric comparative methods were used. To determine the differences in the assessments before and after watching the movie, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. To determine the differences in the assessments between different groups of respondents, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. The IBM SPSS Statistics 20 statistical software package was used for data processing.

3. Results and Discussion

As a result of the preliminary data analysis of the group one (students), significant differences were obtained in the assessments given by them to the elderly before and immediately after watching the movie (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < 0.05). However, the analysis of the combined sample (students and postgraduate students) did not reveal such significant differences. Therefore, it was decided to compare the assessments of these two groups of respondents. It appeared that the evaluation of elderly people differed among students and postgraduate students before the film was shown (18 of 25 scales, Mann—Whitney test, p < 0.05). This result could be explained by the individual differences of the participants (students and postgraduates), which led to the necessity to correct the hypothesis and form additional research tasks, including the comparison of groups. Further analysis was carried out separately for each group of respondents, but not for the united group.

The group of students revealed changes associated with ideas about activities. The respondents saw the elderly as having less initiative, and being purposeless and weak. Moreover, they defined elderly people’s way of life as more passive, having no desire for knowledge or for living a full life. The results immediately after watching the film demonstrated that the audience perceived the elderly as being those who strived less to learn new things and perceived them to be less positive and more limited in their interests. Also, the changes of assessments related to the emotional sphere were discovered. The elderly were characterized as even more unrestrained and conflict-prone with a tendency towards depression and showing no emotions.

Comparative analysis of assessments of elderly people before and after watching the film, given by respondents of the group two (postgraduate students), showed significant differences on 14 of the 25 scales ( Table 2 ). Postgraduate students evaluated the elderly, unlike students, more positively after watching the film. Changes on 9 common scales (purposeless - purposeful, cheerful - prone to depression, passive - initiative, conflict - peaceful, traditional - modern, etc.) for students and postgraduate students turned out to be of different directions. After watching the film, the elderly seemed to be more purposeful, active and successful, responsible and with a good sense of humor. There were changes in assessments of the emotional sphere (more cheerful, peaceful) and cognitive (more intelligent) in references to novelty and life in general (the strive to learn new things, the desire for a full life).

Thus, the data revealed changes in attitude towards the elderly people after watching the film. According to a number of their characteristics related to motivational aspects—regulatory, emotional and cognitive spheres—significant changes were revealed, but the tendency of these changes was unexpected. After group one (students) watched the film, a tendency of worsening assessments was found. It was also determined that before the film, students described the elderly more negatively as being less intelligent and interesting, more conflict prone, angry and aggressive than young people (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < 0.01). This generally negative attitude can be explained by a special view of quite young people on the "old age". But why, despite the attempt of the filmmakers to make the image of the elderly positive enough, did the film fail to change students’ attitude? Instead, it made the image of elderly persons even less attractive. Meanwhile, there was an opposite trend in group two (postgraduate students). Their assessments of elderly people after watching the film changed for the better. The postgraduate students, unlike undergraduate students, had already demonstrated a more "adequate" view on the elderly before watching the film. Despite a number of negative assessments, the elderly were seen by them as smart and striving for a full life, sociable and interesting.

Comparison of the two groups of respondents confirmed significant differences between students and postgraduate students in the evaluation of the elderly after watching the film ( Table 3 ). The assessments given by undergraduate students and postgraduates differed significantly on 21 out of 25 scales.

The opposite tendencies found in assessments after watching the film could be explained by differences in individual characteristics of respondents, which were not initially considered in our study as factors mediating the impact of the film: age of respondents (more subtle differentiation), educational status, as an indicator of individual psychological characteristics and experiences of interactions with elderly people. The suggestion of differences between students and postgraduates by personality is consistent with the results of other studies [ 58 ], and is indirectly confirmed by the fact that only about 1 out of 40 students become postgraduate students (data for Russia). In our study, differences between students and postgraduate students already manifested in differences in their attitudes towards the elderly before watching the film.

Then the film, which showed some negative aspects of life for elderly people (loneliness, needlessness, diseases, fears, physical limitations “comic” behavior), despite the optimistic ending, could strengthen the negative attitudes of very young people (students) towards the elderly, whose images might not yet be fully formed. On the other hand, postgraduate students might have a more complex view on elderly people, because of age and more diverse interactions with the elderly, for example, in scientific work. In this case, their perceptions of the film could be focused on its positive ideas, strengthening their previously formed positive image of an elderly person. In addition, postgraduate students, who have chosen the scientific career path, most likely have a high level of analytical skills that contributed to more complex perceptions of the world and a deep assessment of the phenomena that could affect their attitudes towards the older generation and the interpretation of their images in the movies. At the same time, the characteristics of the film itself, as well as the cultural differences between its creators and viewers, might cause additional negative impacts on students’ perceptions. Comedy, as a genre, could have an opposite effect. Younger people perceived the desire of older characters to give their lives new meanings in their own way and they saw a futility in these attempts. Respondents with more experience could be more tolerant to the specifics of the genre, and their perception of the film was more complicated and implemented in a broader context.

Thus, comparison of the results of the analysis for both groups of respondents suggests that the different changes in viewers’ attitudes towards objects of reality that occur after watching a movie can be explained by differences in the attitudes before watching the film. This effect can also be explained by the degree of identification with the characters [ 31 , 59 , 60 ], which is influenced by the previous attitudes of the viewers. For example, a study of the impact of films on attitudes towards migrants showed that greater identification with the characters induced more positive attitudes toward immigration, but only when previous prejudice was low or moderate [ 26 ]. In this regard, the various effects of the film on students and postgraduate students could be caused by the different degrees of their identification with the characters of the film, despite the fact that a large difference in age with the characters could complicate this process for all participants in the study. The conclusion that previous attitudes mediate the impact of the film complements the ideas of the contribution of individual differences to media effects [ 61 ]. In addition, this conclusion has practical value: in order to achieve the desired impact of films, it is necessary to identify the viewers’ individual attitudes before a screening.

At the third stage of the study, it was examined whether changes remained over time. Two weeks after watching the movie, respondents (group one) re-took the test.

Significant differences were found only on 4 scales (strives to a full life - lost the meaning of life, craving for spirituality - limited interests, quickly tired – high in stamina, traditional - modern) ( Table 4 ). The continuing changes in the characteristics related to the inferiority and limitations of elderly people’s lives may indicate the most striking and memorable moments in the film that had the greatest impact on viewers. The assessments of the other characteristics did not differ significantly from those that were identified before watching the film. That leads to the conclusion that a single movie viewing, in general, did not have a lasting effect on the viewers’ attitudes toward the elderly. Most of the changes discovered immediately after watching the movie did not remain over time. Studying the mechanisms of the formation of sustainable changes is a task for future research. One of the directions of such research could be to investigate the influence of additional cognitive processing (e.g., discussion after watching the movie) on the viewers’ attitudes towards objects and the sustainability of changes over time.

The correlation between the gender of the respondents and changes in attitudes after watching the film was determined by comparing the assessments separately for males and females in each group. As a result, in group one, women were found to have significant differences in ratings on 13 scales, and men in three, two of which were common (no desire to learn anything - the desire to learn new skills, traditional - modern, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < 0.05). The data showed greater changes in the attitudes among women than among men after watching the film. At the same time, a comparison of the male and female participants in the group two did not reveal such results. The analysis found an equal number of significant differences in assessments (on 10 scales) before and after watching the film (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < 0.05). Thus, it can be assumed that gender had a lower impact on changes in attitudes after watching a film than other individual characteristics of respondents.

The data on the frequency of watching movies was obtained: 56% of respondents watch movies several times a week and more often, 44%—several times a month and less often. However, there were no differences between these viewers in the assessments before and after watching the film (Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.05). The degree of general interest in cinema did not affect the change of viewers’ attitudes after watching the film.

It was not possible to determine the connection between liking the film and the changes in attitudes, since the differentiation of respondents by this factor was not found. Only six young people noted they did not like the film, while the others gave it a positive evaluation.

The study has limitations caused due to an assumption of no significant differences between students and postgraduates in the effectiveness of the film’s impact on them. The revealed differences between undergraduate students and postgraduate students led to the initial sample of young people being divided into two samples with smaller sizes already used during the research. In addition, for the same reason, some variables that could more accurately demonstrate the differences between students and postgraduate students and explain the effects of the film were not considered. The respondents’ attitudes before watching the film were taken into account, as well as additional factors on the impact effectiveness, such as the degree of general interest in cinema and liking of the viewed film, which could presumably increase its impacts. But a deeper study, for example, of the processes of identifying viewers with the film characters, probably linked to the viewers’ attitudes before watching, could reinforce these findings.

4. Conclusions

As a result of the study, changes in the viewers’ attitudes after watching the film were identified. Young people changed their assessments of regulatory, cognitive and emotional characteristics of the elderly people after watching a film about the elderly. At the same time, significant differences were found between students and postgraduate students in their assessments of the elderly. After watching the film, students’ negative attitudes towards elderly people got worse, while postgraduate students’ assessments, on the contrary, changed for the better. The revealed opposite trends can be explained by individual differences between the respondents, which include age, educational status as an indicator of individual psychological characteristics, experience of interaction with elderly people and, as a result, attitudes towards elderly people at the time before watching the film. Most of the changes in the viewers’ attitudes detected immediately after watching the movie did not remain over time.

In general, the study confirms the potential for a positive impact, as in the case of improving the postgraduates’ attitudes, but at the same time demonstrates the need to take into account the individual differences of viewers to achieve desired results. In particular, differences in attitudes before watching a movie are probably causes of differences in the effectiveness of the film’s impact. The initially negative attitude towards elderly people among students could contribute to the negative influence of the film on them. The obtained results form the basis of further research and pose the important questions: clarifying the contribution of individual differences to the effectiveness of the impact, forecasting the positive influence of movies on different groups of people and determining the mechanisms of the sustainability of changes.

And because of popularity only film industries have expanded and developed over time and reached to the position at present. It involves a lot of money for the film makers and if the film becomes a superhit, they get profits up to unbelievable extents, the records which breaks every year with different movies.

Since it is lot in demand it means people are very keen on watching movies. And watching movies does have many impacts on both adults and children. Let’s talk about the positive aspects of movies.

All kinds of movies have got its target audiences and therefore we can say that all kinds of movies are produced because they sell. Movies made on topics such as somebody’s biography, a particular historical event especially freedom struggle, movies based on some great novel, are educative. What is written on a big volume of book can be summarized and made into a movie. And therefore, although we may not get that taste of literature, but we will know about the storyline very well. Movies such as border, the legend of Bhagat Singh, etc. were very touching and it definitely made us feel the sacrifices made by the armies for us. Comedy movies are great to watch every time, provided it is not totally nonsense with stupid jokes. It has also got it’s types. Stories which point out a life lesson in a funny ways are good to watch. Comedy movies should be selected properly when watching with small children because nowadays many adult comedies are also made. And this applies to other genres of movies as well. Family movies are also very heart warming and when we watch we can relate to it. Actually relating causes both good and bad effects. If we are watching a negative story, relating to it, usually done by children, may misguide them. They may watch a action thriller and try to imitate a stunt or the actor’s behavioral pattern shown in the movie. In those kinds of movies, violence, alcohol consumption, smoking, etc. are displayed as a very cool activity because that makes the people in the movie look glamorous. But if a child initiates that, it may not be a very good signal. Seeing those scenes causes some implications on a child’s mind which make him think that violence is normal. Even in real life he may be less sensitive or he won’t realize if something bad is happening nearby.

When talking about romantic movies, parents must be careful because children may not understand love but he may fall trap into the idea of being in love. That is very common in school students. Fantasizing the idea of being in love creates problems in school and because of this only many schools have cctv cameras all around. Watching horror stories must be avoided by children. Because the horror movie genre is a negative genre. Not at all for children. The scenes are overwhelming and it fills us with a kind of anxiety. Something negative creeps in. A child maybe told a hundred times that such things don’t exist. But still an unknown phobia creeps in them. They might get nightmares, get afraid in darkness and overall get the feeling of increased hostility. It actually applies to those adults also who are not very gutsy.

Thus we can say that movies create a great impact on us knowingly or unknowingly. While good movies can draw our attention towards an important issue which might be unknown to us or it may have educative, moral or feel good values, at the same time the negative aspects should be kept in dark.

Positive and negative effects of movies

In today’s time, the movies are one of the biggest sources of entertainment. Most of the people love to watch the movies and the weekend is definitely the right time. All the multiplexes are houseful during this time with movies getting an overwhelming response from the audience. There is no denial to the fact that movies are gaining a lot of popularity with few of them really showcasing the society and bringing a huge revolution. On the other hand, there are some which provoke people and end up having an adverse impact on their life.

Movies not only offer several advantages to the people but there are a few disadvantages too. Here we will talk about the same.

Pros of watching movies:

• As already discussed that movies are a good source of entertainment as it adds spice to your life. You can get rid of your boring day and make it fun filled. In short watching movies is a superb activity if you wish to spend your day. • If you are fond of spending time with your friends and family members then watching a movie with them is a superb idea. It is certainly a different experience to watch a movie together and spend quality time with the people you love. • Movies are a source of inspiration and provide a lot of information as well. Movies made on famous personalities help you to know more about them and at the same time learn from their life. • With the help of the movies, you come to know about the different things happening in our society. There are many incidents which we are not aware of but when movies are made on such topics it is a way to bring them into limelight thus letting people know about them. Apart from the positive effects that the movies have on our lives, it also has a negative effect on it.

Cons of watching movies:

• Some of the movies have adult content in it which spoils the college going students, these movies not only spoil their mentality but change their thinking as well. • People learn wrong habits like smoking and drinking which are showcased in almost all the movies. This is definitely a big concern as the major audience of the movies is the adults and they get carried away with the stuff done by their favorite actors. • A few movies even have a provoking message which creates conflicts among the people thus disturbing the harmony of the place as well as the country. So it is very important that the film-makers understand that value of movies in people’s life and make sure that the right theme is projected. This will not only change the society but also help the people in living a happy life. Movies are just a mirror for us and therefore we should grab the positive things from rather than leaning towards the negative ones. So watch good movies that inspire you and bring a change in your life.

Hollywood loves history. At this year’s Academy Awards , three nominees for Best Picture (“ Fences ,” “ Hacksaw Ridge ” and “ Hidden Figures ”) were “historical” to today’s teenagers – set in or about events that occurred before they were born.

History movies, like most movies, have a huge audience in the U.S. Even Disney’s notorious 2004 version of “ The Alamo ” – a box office “bomb” – was seen by millions. That’s far more people than read most best-selling historians’ books.

A lot of these viewers are kids, watching the movies in theaters, at home and even at school. I’ve observed “The Alamo” used by teachers on more than one occasion.

But are motion pictures like these good for learning about history? As a scholar of social studies education and the use of film to teach history , I offer the response that films can support learning – if used to meet specific goals and connected to the proper subject matter.

The allure of history movies

Fact-based or fictional, realistic or fantastic, history movies shape the way people think about the past. In a study of how 15 families discussed historical understanding of the Vietnam War era, kids and parents both spontaneously drew on memories of movies . “ Forrest Gump ,” in particular, was referenced by both generations.

It’s not surprising that teachers want to draw on this cultural power, showing movies in class to get students more excited about history. In one study of 84 Wisconsin and Connecticut teachers , nearly 93 percent reported that they use some portion of a film at least once a week. While not enough to draw clear conclusions, this study does suggest that history films are likely used quite often in the classroom.

So why do teachers choose to show movies with class time?

People often talk about the stereotype of the busy/lazy/overwhelmed teacher who puts on a movie instead of doing “real” teaching. However, research indicates that teachers actually tend to have good motives when it comes to showing movies in class.

In that study of 84 teachers, most felt that students are more motivated and learn more when a film is used. Case studies also describe other academic goals teachers have for using movies in class , which include understanding historical controversies, visualizing narratives of the past and studying movies as “primary sources” that reflect the time at which they were made.

In a recent study of more than 200 Australian teachers , many described how movies added audio and visual elements to learning and showcased a more personal, empathetic look at historical figures and events – both aspects that the teachers felt resonated with the learning styles and preferences of their pupils.

Do students trust movies?

Most young people are savvy enough to know that movies and TV are fictionalized, but that doesn’t mean they know how to keep history and Hollywood separate. After all, movies and TV shows set in a historical period can be extensively researched and often blend fact and fiction .

In a study of two U.S. history classes, high school students interviewed claimed that “Hollywood” films are less trustworthy sources of information. Yet in classroom activities, they treated them like any other legitimate source – perhaps because the teacher adds some unintentional legitimacy simply by choosing the film. The teacher “must see some good history in it,” explained one student. “I don’t think he’s going to show something random,” said another.

A case study by education professor Alan Marcus found that students believed most movies watched in class to be at least somewhat trustworthy – a source of information to gather facts.

The level of trust students have may also depend on their prior knowledge or cultural viewpoints, as in a study of 26 Wisconsin teenagers – half of them white and half Native American. The Native American teens found the 1993 Kevin Costner film “ Dances with Wolves ” to be slightly more trustworthy than their white peers did. The white students, on the other hand, rated the school textbook as much more trustworthy than the Native American teens did.

Educational challenges

The complicated relationship between fact and fiction is just one of the many challenges educators face when using history movies in their classrooms. It’s not as simple as pressing “play.”

Among the host of practical and academic challenges:

Many history movies are R-rated, with material parents may not want shown in class.
Some administrators aren’t supportive of spending class time on popular media.
Pressure to cover content standards and prepare for testing can leave little time for intensive media projects.

The very structure of the school day, in fact, makes it difficult to fit film viewing into the curriculum – especially if discussion and reviewing strategies are included.

Perhaps the most daunting question is whether movies are actually good for learning history.

In one Australian study, most participating teachers believed film to be useful, but some took the position that film can confuse students with inaccurate portrayals . “Hollywood distorts history, but kids remember what they‘ve seen more than the facts,” said one teacher.

A psychological research study found that viewing history films considerably increased factual recall when the film matched historical readings. However, students came away with considerable misinformation when the film conflicted with the readings – because the students remembered the film and not the text. This occurred even when students were generally warned that the history movies were fictional.

With specific warnings about false details, most students were able to remember the accurate information as well as the misinformation. Teachers must set the stage when a movie is introduced, helping students mentally tag which elements are inaccurate.

How to learn history from Hollywood

History movies have potential as learning tools, but that potential isn’t easy to realize.

Teachers need strong subject matter knowledge about the topics portrayed, so that they can frame the movie and its relationship to fact and fiction. Teachers also need to have sound learning goals and awareness of the diverse cultural viewpoints that students bring to the classroom. And they need the time and resources for meaningful discussion or assignments after viewing.

Simply put, history movies – and most other media – by themselves don’t teach.

If a teacher lines up proper film choice, lesson goals, subject matter and class activities using the film, it is possible to really learn about history by way of Hollywood.

Other than sleeping and working, Americans are more likely to watch television than engage in any other activity .

A wave of new social science research shows that the quality of shows can influence us in important ways, shaping our thinking and political preferences, even affecting our cognitive ability.

In this so-called golden age of television , some critics have pointed out that the best of the form is equivalent to the most enriching novels. And high-quality programming for children can be educational. But the latest evidence also suggests there can be negative consequences to our abundant watching, particularly when the shows are mostly entertainment.

The harm seems to come not so much from the content itself but from the fact that it replaces more enlightening ways of spending time.
