Apple Mortgage Cake

Dove review.

“Apple Mortgage Cake” is based on a true story about Angela Logan and her struggles in life. It is not easy raising three teen age boys, managing a household and volunteering to help others. Angela is a kind person and always believes in aiding others in their problems to help them start a new life. But when she falls into hard times, her pride gets in the way of asking or letting others help her.

This is an encouraging movie that will help many families in today’s society. There are many people in the world today that find themselves in the same situation as Angela, and she shows how one can survive by using an idea that may be crazy to some but turns both her and her family’s life around. Who knew that a little cake could bring them a way to improve their lives.

This is truly a family film that gives a wonderful message of encouragement, faith, and helping others. We are proud to award this presentation the Dove “Family-Approved” Seal for all ages.

Apple Mortgage Cake is the real thing

Kimberly Elise in Apple Mortgage Cake

Apple Mortgage Cake is an older film (2014) streaming on Prime Video. It’s the true story of how a woman saved her home by baking cakes – lots of cakes!

Apple Mortgage Cake is the story of Angela Logan (Kimberly Elise). She was in danger of losing her home, a home that had been in her family for 3 generations. She had 3 sons: William ( Stephan James ), Nicholas (Lamar Johnson), and Marcus (A.J. Saudin).

Angela worked to help others, her sons’ school, and her community. But she couldn’t find the cash to keep the mortgage paid up.

An old friend, Melvin George ( Kevin Hanchard ), showed up one day. While taking with Melvin and her boys, Angela commented that the only thing she was really good at was baking cakes. They seized on the idea and put plans in motion for her to try to sell enough cakes to make the mortgage money.

Kimberly Elise in Apple Mortgage Cake

She started baking and selling. She made the news and orders came flooding in. It didn’t go smoothly. With some help and a lot of hard work, each problem was solved as it came up. This inspiring story is based on a real woman and her real apple cakes. She now has her own bakery in Teaneck, NJ.

Stories about real people who overcome seemingly insurmountable problems are always a pleasure to watch, and this film is no exception.

at this moment, in my life, I can honestly say that watching this “movie” was absolutely one-hundred percent unnecessary....  but, it is also what happened to be on our television as I tended to the garden......

I felt nothing.

I sympathized with the weeds I was collecting more than any character or any emotion that was on display in this “movie”.

sorry, everyone involved.

Scavenger Hunt #93 - December 2022 Prompt 13. Watch a movie with baking or an important baked good.

Well this was surprisingly solid, even though it never breaks free from it's made for TV trappings - the score and the dialogue being the main handicaps. The story worked well and the actors were, in the main, believable.

Pretty good for a lifetime movie.

I'm not sure if it actually is a lifetime movie, but it definitely feels like one. So as long as you know what you are in for, there are a few smiles and an uplifting true story to mine from the very middle of the road, melodramatic formula.

Somehow the first film I’ve watched since lockdown officially started in the UK... Mum chose it randomly for some light entertainment with dinner (since new TV shows have dried up) I was half paying attention.

The story is very sweet and I always appreciate films based on remarkable true stories. It is definitely a feel-good film. It suffers terribly from stiff and wooden dialogue however and many, many clichés. It also contains a pet peeve of mine: when characters see someone from their past and say “John? John Johnston??” nobody calls another person by their full name unless you’re in a waiting room or perhaps told off by a parent. It also manages to set itself up for extremely predictable…

Apple Mortgage Cake Recipe: Taste the Sweet Victory of Homeownership

Posted: May 21, 2023 · Last updated: May 21, 2023 · by Shai Cohen · This post may contain affiliate links

Heroes don't always wear capes. Some would simply bake a hundred apple cakes, sell them for $40 each to pay their mortgage and they hold on to their house, as evident in our Apple Mortgage cake recipe, which gained popularity due to the movie with the same name. The American dream is still alive and kicking.

While it’s true that the original story provides a taste to our Apple Mortgage cake recipe, we must admit that the spices, raisins, and walnuts, combined with a savory caramel glaze might play a role too. Although our hero sold those for $40 a piece, it actually costs much less than that to make.

Ingredients

Instructions, substitutions, apple mortgage cake recipe, 1. the cake.

  • All-purpose flour — 3 cups
  • Cinnamon — 1 tsp.
  • Nutmeg — ½ tsp.
  • Sugar — 2 cups
  • Walnuts — 1 cup, chopped
  • Eggs — 3 pcs.
  • Salt — ½ tsp.
  • Apples — 3 cups, peeled and diced
  • Raisins — 1 cup
  • Vanilla extract — 1 tsp.
  • Cooking oil — 1 cup
  • Baking soda — 1 tsp.

2. The glaze

  • Milk — ¼ cup
  • Brown sugar — ½ cup
  • Butter — ½ cup

Our Apple Mortgage cake recipe

  • Set your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Combine the flour, salt, baking soda, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Stir well.
  • Using another mixing bowl, combine the sugar, oil, vanilla extract, and eggs. Stir until smooth.
  • Combine the dry and the wet mixtures in a single bowl.
  • Make sure to stir until smooth.
  • Add the apples, raisins, and chopped walnuts.
  • Transfer the batter to a lightly greased baking pan.
  • Bake for 45 minutes.
  • In the meantime, melt the butter in a pan.
  • Add the milk and brown sugar.
  • Bring them to a boil and stir for two minutes.
  • Remove from the heat. Add the vanilla extract.
  • Once your cake is baked, give it ten minutes to cool down. Then, pour the caramel glaze mixture over the cake.
  • Walnuts — Chopped walnuts could easily be replaced with any other kind of nuts that suit your taste better. Almonds and hazelnuts are obviously good candidates, and you can give cashews a try as well.
  • Raisins — Walnuts and raisins make an iconic pair in this Apple Mortgage cake recipe, and we’d recommend you stick with those. If that’s not an option, you can replace raisins with dried cranberries or dried cherries. Lastly, dried currants would be fine as well.
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg — It’s true that this Apple Mortgage cake tastes just like the ones your grandma used to make for you, and the combination of cinnamon and nutmeg plays a huge part in this. Those two could be replaced with Allspice, which actually includes both cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Make it vegan — Our Apple Mortgage cake recipe could easily be made vegan with just a few changes. When it comes to eggs, a quarter cup of yogurt would do the job of a single egg as a binder. The same goes for mashed bananas as well. Milk can be replaced by any non-dairy milk. You can use coconut oil instead of butter in the recipe.
  • Make it R-rated — If you’re after something even more exciting, you might want to add some rum into the mix. Simply add three tablespoons of rum, preferably dark rum, into your wet batter and simply proceed.

Our Apple Mortgage cake recipe

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 2 mixing bowls
  • 9x13 baking pan
  • Instead, transfer the leftover cake into an airtight container.
  • Once stored in your fridge, the leftover Apple Mortgage cake will last for three days.
  • Once frozen, the leftovers will last for two months.
  • The ingredients — When it comes to the ingredients, we would recommend you stick with ingredients at room temperature. They will bond much easier, resulting in a smoother batter with a better texture.
  • The apples — Admittedly, you would be fine using any apple you have, when it comes to our Apple Mortgage cake recipe. Still, you might be better off using tart ones. The texture would be much better.

This one, an adaptation of Fluke’s book Apple Turnover Murder , was written and produced by its star Alison Sweeney, and serves up another reliably cozy mystery, this one involving the mysterious murder of a college professor.

ONE BAD APPLE: A HANNAH SWENSEN MYSTERY : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Hannah Swensen (Alison Sweeney) unloads her car in front of the Lake Eden Community College, where she’s started teaching a college cooking class. But unbeknownst to her, someone is watching her, taking photos of her every move. As she finished unloading the car, she notices that someone has pierced an apple with a knife and left it for her in the backseat.

The Gist: Just to get things out of the way, the person surveilling Hannah in the movie’s opening scene is not some nefarious criminal, it’s Hannah’s own mother, Delores (Barbara Niven). Delores informs Hannah that she’s finally found her calling: she’s going to be a private detective. Hannah, too, has branched out professionally, because on top of her duties running her bakery, she’s been teaching a baking course at the local college. She’s partnered with one of the English professors, Bradford Ramsey (Oliver Rice), and has created a lesson plan where her class will bake a dessert inspired by a novel, when all of a sudden the gas burner she and Bradford are standing near explodes into a fireball.

It seems that this fire was no accident though, and perhaps Bradford was the target, because soon after, Hannah finds the professor dead, stabbed with a chef’s knife in his office. As Hannah works with her mom and sisters to make a list of suspects, ranging from his estranged ex wife to his disgruntled teacher’s assistant, to one of his flirtatious students, there’s one key piece of evidence that’s discovered that throws the whole investigation into chaos: the murder weapon is Hannah’s own knife. Hannah’s not just investigating this case… she’s also a suspect.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? The Hannah Swensen mysteries — see also Carrot Cake Murder and A Zest For Death — are a particular kind of cozy mystery that make ubiquitous small-town murders seem quaint and charming. To use a baking metaphor, it’s got a dash of Murder, She Wrote , well-mixed with the quirkiness of British faves Midsomer Murders and Pie In The Sky .

Our Take: This latest installment in the franchise formerly known as Murder, She Baked harnesses all the elements that have made past installments so successful. Sweeney and her supporting cast have an easy familiarity in their roles, whether it’s the relationship she has with her mother and sisters or the new flirtation she has with her old friend Norman (Gabriel Hogan), or the professional rapport she has with police detective Lonnie (Daylin Willis), the universe of Lake Eden feels well-established. What’s another small-town murder to these people anyway?

While there are your typical red herrings and classic moments of Hannah snooping and sneaking around where she shouldn’t be, that’s about as dangerous as this movie gets. Even as the prime suspect holds Hannah at gunpoint in the final moments of the film, there’s never a doubt that Hannah will exit unscathed, and that’s the point of the cozy mystery: we watch explicitly for the fact that. Aside from the unlucky murder victim, no harm will come to those involved in the making of this film; justice will prevail and Hannah will go back to flouring her bread board.

Long-term fans of the series will notice the differences from past films, specifically the fact that Hannah’s ex, Mike, has exited the series, making way for other flirtations, but beyond that, Sweeney, who wrote the script in addition to starring in it, has capably adapted this story and has remained true to the series. She knows what her audience expects, and she’s delivered.

Parting Shot: Hannah, her sisters, and her mom gather in her kitchen for some self-congratulatory drinks after solving the case. Delores then notices that someone has pinged her phone and she announces that she has a new client request for her P.I. business. That calls for a toast.

Performance Worth Watching: Victor Webster, who plays the Lake Eden prosecutor Chad Norton, might give Hannah’s love life a jolt now that her old boyfriend Mike (Cameron Mathison, who doesn’t appear in this film at all) has moved to Virginia for a new job at the FBI. Though there’s no real romance between the two yet, it’s obvious that he’s being positioned as a new love interest.

Memorable Dialogue: In a meta nod to this franchise’s source material, Hannah tells her baking students that many authors use food as an allegory in their novels, to which one of her students, Pam, replies, “There’s a great set of mysteries that are all about different desserts.” And you’re watching one of them!

Our Call: STREAM IT! One Bad Apple is the perfect rainy-day comfort watch that will keep you entertained with its familiar cast of characters and engaging (if not terribly surprising) mystery.

Sheffield snake and cake cafe to address reptiles' 'bad rep'

The owners of a new reptile cafe say they want to help address the creatures' "bad rep".

Debs and Declan Tormey said while some people were afraid of lizards and snakes they were in fact "as loving as every other pet".

The couple hope their new venture, with experiences such as "snake and a cake", will remove the stigma around reptiles.

Mrs Tormey said: "Once you get over the fact they are reptiles you can appreciate how cute they are."

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield , she said: "I personally love all animals but reptiles have got a bit of a bad rep and I just really want to encourage people to realise that they are incredible creatures."

The couple, from Sheffield, already run a pet sitting and animal encounter business in the city but later this year plan to open The Cosy Chameleon in Totley.

The cafe will be used to show off their collection of 25 reptiles, including Darwin, a boa constrictor, and Charlie, a jewelled lacerta.

Mr Tormey said: "These animals, through our evolution, we've had to be afraid of - they have a posed a threat in the past - but now, with a little bit of understanding they are as loving as every other pet on the market.

"We love these guys as much as we do our cat and dog."

Venture capitalists' appetite for fusion startups has been up and down in the last few years. For instance, the Fusion Industry Association found that while nuclear fusion companies had attracted over $6 billion in investment in 2023, $1.4 billion more than in 2022, the 27% growth proved slower than in 2022, as investors battled external fears such as inflation. The field reached a significant milestone in 2022 when the Department of Energy’s National Ignition Facility managed to bring about a fusion reaction that produced more power than was required to spark a fuel pellet.
