Today, pollution has become an existential problem for every living being on earth. Every country, every region, and every community is facing the challenges posed by pollution. Human activities have been degrading natural resources for ages. 

From burning fossil fuels to cutting trees, almost every selfish human activity is responsible for causing pollution in the environment. The cars we drive, the plastic we use, the clothes we wear, the garbage we throw, etc. all cause pollution. To combat pollution and reduce its impact on the environment, various governmental and international organizations have been formed. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is one such organization, which deals with pollution, its causes, and consequences at the global level.

‘Hello and welcome to all my mates and teachers. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on pollution. There is a lot about pollution in our Geography books. From the causes of pollution to its preventive measures. But have we ever followed any of these preventive measures? 

There are different types of pollution, such as air, soil, water, radioactivity, noise, etc. All these pollutions have different sources, which not only disturb the natural environment but also have adverse effects on human health, biodiversity, ecosystems, and the climate. 

Pollution is a fight that requires a collective effort from developed and developing countries. Recently, there was a debate where the first world countries were requesting others to equally take responsibility for environmental pollution. However, this is not the case, because the major damage to the environment is caused by developmental activities in these first-world countries. 

The damage is already down, and now is not the try to cry over spilled milk. We are in this together, and we have to take responsibility for our actions. With well-structured, alternative strategies and cooperation, we can combat pollution.

‘Hello and welcome to everyone present here. As a conscious human being, I am happy to present my speech on pollution. Pollution is known as the introduction of unwanted substances into the environment, which disrupts the natural environment and overall health of the planet. One of the major concerns of the pollution is climate change. 

The history of pollution is older than one century. In 1896, a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius first predicted the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which may substantially increase the surface temperature and because a major cause of global warming. 

The first international summit to consider pollution as a global concern was the 1972 Stockholm Convention. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was the outcome of this international climate convention. UNEP deals with all environmental problems at the global level and organizes various environmental programs to raise awareness about pollution, climate change, global warming, etc.

Today, our terrestrial and marine ecosystems are facing existential threats due to pollution. Deforestation, industrial waste, and chemical pollutants are wreaking havoc on biodiversity. The loss of habitats, the decline of species, and the imbalance in our ecosystems paint a grim picture of the toll pollution takes on our natural world.

There are different types of pollution, such as air, water, noise, soil, radioactivity, thermal, plastic, etc. Burning of fossil fuels, industrial processes, vehicle emissions, and agricultural activities causes air pollution. Water pollution is caused by industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, untreated sewage, oil spills, and dumping of chemicals in rivers, ponds and lakes. Improper disposal of industrial waste, agricultural practices, use of pesticides and fertilizers, and contamination from hazardous substances cause soil pollution. The list goes on as new types of pollution are being discovered by scientists. 

Pollution not only affects our environment but also disrupts our daily life as it affects our health, and biodiversity and is a major cause of climate change. Every country and its citizens must recognize the importance of addressing pollution through regulations, sustainable alternative practices, and environmental conservation efforts.

It is a pleasure to be here to mark this day as part of the Netherlands’ Presidency of the Security Council.

High-level debates in the Security Council may sometimes seem divorced from grassroots issues. Today, we are literally looking at grassroots. I was supposed to get my hands dirty, but circumstances did not allow it, so and that is not a metaphor.

In our daily lives, in this busy United Nations complex, in the middle of this dynamic city, we all need regular reminders of our connection with nature and our planet. This act is fundamental. The health of our planet is essential to our own health and wellbeing, and to our future and trees are an essential part of it.  

I welcome the Dutch Presidency’s focus on tackling the root causes of conflict, including climate change, which has very serious implications for peace and security in all regions.

Trees and forests play an essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change. Planting trees is one of the most important things we can do to contribute to the health of the planet.

Forests are the lungs of our planet, drawing in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxygen.

And trees improve our lives both on a grand scale and at the local level. Strategic planting of trees can help save the energy used for heating in winter and for air conditioning in summer, both very necessary in New York.

Trees in urban areas filter the air and remove harmful particles. They also help to filter and regulate water, preventing flooding and protecting watersheds.  

They reduce noise pollution by shielding homes and offices from roads and industrial areas.

They provide a hospitable place for animals to live and other plants to grow.

And if any of you goes to Central Park knows how much trees can help to promote health and relaxation, improve quality of life and provide beautiful places for people to relax and socialize.

Trees are mysterious, wonderful and ancient. Plants and forests are hundreds of millions of years old, while homo sapiens has been around for just 250,000 years. 

As the geobiologist Hope Jahren has said: People don’t know how to make a leaf, but they know how to destroy one.

Deforestation has slowed down significantly over the past 25 years. The goal of halting deforestation and restoring forests, as set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is an attainable objective if we continue our efforts.

Leaves, and trees, and all plants, are a vital accompaniment to human life. As we celebrate spring, let us celebrate them.

I have a particular personal reason to do so. When I was born, my grandfather, the father of my mother, whose name is a family name, that I still keep, that is Oliveira, that is in Portuguese “olive tree”, the day I was born he planted an olive tree. And the olive tree is still there, probably in better health than myself. And I believe it will still be there many years after I no longer [will be] around.

But there is one thing in trees that I find particularly important: it is how they are a symbol of dignity. It is not by chance that trees die standing. And so let us, with this symbolic gesture of today, remind ourselves that we need to do everything we can, not only for a healthy planet but [also] for human dignity to be safeguarded in an healthy planet.

Speech on Pollution : The presence of harmful contaminants into the environment causing damage to the air, water and land resources in our environment is called pollution. Pollutants could be naturally occurring like volcanic ash or human-made materials like smoke, chemicals and trash substances. Pollution is a global problem. Common types of pollution are – air, water, soil, noise and light pollution. Long term exposure to pollution can lead to chronic diseases, cancers and other fatal disorders.

A warm welcome to one & all present here. Today we are here to discuss the very burning topic of the decade that is pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organization, eleven out of twelve cities with the highest levels of particulate pollution are located in India. A study says 86% of the Indian water bodies are deemed critically polluted. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year.

As per the Global Burden of Disease Report by the World Health Organization, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated to be 6.3% in India due to noise pollution. These are the few reports which have become often in today’s media & still we are not serious about the problem. Air Pollution in India has become a severe problem. As per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is ten times over the safe limit.

57% of the total air pollution are by the industries, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning & around 5% by Diwali fireworks. India, as a country, is the third-largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. There is a decrease in the Air Quality Index of all the major cities of the country. All these have resulted in an increase in several airborne diseases & the premature deaths in India.

Now the second type of pollution which has impacted is water pollution. The largest source of water pollution is untreated sewage. Other factors include agricultural runoff & unregulated small scale industries, solid wastes etc. These factors have resulted in contamination of both surface water & groundwater. Lack of toilets & defecation is also adding to the cause. Many rivers water has been declared unfit for domestic use due to high pollution with organic matter.

Not only humans but also the life in water is getting adversely affected by this.Now let us briefly discuss the land degradation. Soil Contamination or land pollution is caused by xenobiotic chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil. It is due to the intensive farming, deforestation, improper disposal of wastes & industrial activities. Except for these few major pollution’s, there are several other types of pollution’s like noise pollution, light pollution, plastic pollution which has been ignored since long.

Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain etc. are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. To sum it up, all types of pollution’s are detrimental to the planet & comes with terrible consequences.

All of us must take steps to bring the changes in industries to the individual level. A joint effort by the government & the citizens will curb the situation from getting worse. So let us make a stand for our mother earth & listen to its pains to save it from the upcoming global calamity.

Very good morning to everyone present over here. Today the topic we will be discussing is a very well known & often heard in the news. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the environment, which affects it adversely. Pollution can be of several types like air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, etc. Not to our surprise, human activities are the major cause of misbalanced environment & pollution.

The rise in population, industrialization, deforestation, and mining are the major contributor to the damage we have done to the environment. We have entirely exploited the natural resources & the nature around us. According to an estimation by the World Health Organization, air pollution causes premature death of around 8.8 million people worldwide which is likely to increase in coming years.

Water pollution has raised the alarming issue of the sharp decrease in domestic water for use. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year. Noise pollution has affected both behaviour & health of humans. Not only the humans but pollution has given a significant threat to the flora & fauna on the earth too.

Pollution has also led to many more serious problems like global warming , melting of polar ice, ozone layer depletion, and climatic disturbances on a global level. The reasons are many & all of us need to acknowledge that we have created a threat to life on earth. The consequences of pollution are hazardous. We must become more alert & proactive towards the situation & make every effort to turn the situation another way around.

All of us must pledge to bring a better tomorrow for the World. With an urge for everyone to give their best in the joint effort to eliminate pollution, I would like to end my speech.

Do trees pollute the atmosphere?

Yes, just as president Ronald Reagan said in 1981. "Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do," he opined. A little later, environmental scientists ruefully confirmed he was partially right. In hot weather, trees release volatile organic hydrocarbons including terpenes and isoprenes - two molecules linked to photochemical smog. In very hot weather, the production of these begins to accelerate.

America's Great Smoky Mountains are supposed to take their name from the photochemical smog released by millions of hectares of hardwoods.

This week Natural Environment Research Council scientists warned that as summer temperatures rise in the UK, the isoprene output from trees could make a small but noticeable contribution to human discomfort. Isoprene serves as a catalyst, driving the rate at which sunlight breaks down oxides of nitrogen - mostly from agriculture and cars - to produce atmospheric ozone.

Ozone is a triple molecule of oxygen. High in the stratosphere it is a godsend, screening out cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation. But in the lower atmosphere it is a toxin: it causes stinging eyes, prickling nostrils and aggravates severe respiratory problems. Statisticians calculate that in August 2003 - the long hot summer that caused an estimated 20,000 deaths in western Europe - more than 500 British deaths could be attributed to ozone pollution.

But the experts say the trees alone are not the problem. The real villain is the motor car. Trees soak up carbon dioxide, and respire oxygen, doing far more good than harm. And finally, as one forester observed: why worry about a few harmful natural chemicals? In a truly antiseptic world we would all be dead.

There is no denying that trees serve as natural air filters and a vital source of oxygen. In addition to this, fruits and vegetables are produced by animals and birds for human use. In addition to providing refuge for birds, they serve as playthings for kids, monkeys, and birds. Trees have great value for both our ecosystem and our meaningful lives.

Greatest Gift of life

The greatest gift to life on Earth is trees. The idea that trees behave as carbon sinks by storing carbon dioxide in their roots, woods, and leaves has already been discussed, but I want to emphasise it. This carbon is not as abundant in our climate, which has the potential to destroy it. A tree can generate wind.

When the weather is chilly and windy, the trees planted around the edge operate as windbreakers. The roots of the trees protect the soil, while their leaves break the force of the wind and lessen the effect of rain on the ground.

As a result, trees deal with soil erosion, capture rainwater, and monitor stormwater flow and sediment accumulation. In the end, I want to say that trees are excellent for people and that they are the natural guardians of people. They feed us, and our lives are sustained.

The activity of planting trees is referred to as afforestation or reforestation in silviculture. In this technique, seedlings are planted in areas where the forest has suffered damage from a fire, disease, harvesting, or other human activities. As a result of the alarming rate at which pollution is growing, numerous nations are developing various measures to combat the problem.

One of the most significant of these strategies is the planting of trees. Numerous reforestation businesses have also been established, and they are in charge of planting trees in the areas that have lost their forests. By removing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere, trees improve the air quality for all living things.

Advantages of Afforestation

Carbon Dioxide and oxygen are exchanged in a whole cycle in plants. Thus, more tree planting would aid in lowering the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide.

The more trees planted, the cleaner the air will be. The air would be pure and free of toxins if there were sufficient oxygen and reduced carbon dioxide.

Plants can also naturally filter contaminated water. Thus, increasing tree cover would improve not only the air quality but also the water.

The quantity of plants has decreased, which has caused the temperature to change regularly. Plants can sustain atmospheric temperatures. Increasing the number of plants would help cool down hotter areas.

Numerous wild animals live in trees and other plants. Many birds construct their nests on trees. Plants support wildlife. Increased tree planting will benefit all biodiversity in addition to humans.

The ecosystem is immediately improved by planting trees. Planting trees can stop soil erosion. Additionally, they absorb various contaminants, making the land, water, and air cleaner.

Deforestation

Deforestation is the deliberate destruction of forests. Typically, many trees are taken down to make more room for people. The rapid increase in population is the cause of this. People need more land to construct dwellings or provide space for expanding crop production. Additionally, forests are being cleared to produce more wood, which is utilised as a fuel and a building material. If we keep destroying our ecosystem at our current rate, soon, no trees will be left on Earth. So, in order to stop nature's destruction, mankind must plant more trees.

Story of My School

Recently my school has started a tree plantation campaign around the city. We have to go to different places in the city and plant trees in those places where there is none. I had lots of trees with me, and I planted almost 100 trees around colonies, colleges, schools and outside some corporate buildings. I was delighted throughout the campaign. Without trees, none of us would survive. Thus we need to plant trees and make our mother earth greener. We know how crucial plants and trees are to our continued existence and health. But how many of us plant trees regularly? If you aren't already, now is the moment to start taking environmental improvement seriously and making whatever small contributions you can.

Seattle’s tree ordinance is endangering trees, not protecting them

Last spring, Seattle rushed to pass a new tree ordinance  that claimed to include robust tree protection. In contrast, the city’s own Urban Forestry Commission condemned the ordinance as “flawed and rushed,” warning it would worsen canopy inequity  by hastening removal of mature trees. Less than a year later, The Last 6000’s monitoring of tree removal notices has exposed the ordinance’s damaging impact. 

While the ordinance tightened tree removal restrictions for homeowners, it dramatically loosened regulations for developers. Here are the results: Since January 2024, Seattle has lost 641 significant trees, removing an average of five per day. Of these, 78 were large trees with trunks measuring over 2 feet in diameter. Permits show that 67 of these exceptional trees were removed specifically for development. Mature trees are critical in reducing urban heat, pollution, and flooding.

After reviewing project applications and approvals from the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections, we could not find a single instance where a tree was retained on any development project under the new ordinance. This outcome dashes the hopes shared by city council members last spring, that the ordinance would incentivize developers to keep trees since having to pay fees or replace them would cut into profits. Clearly, that intended outcome has failed to materialize.   

A 100-year-old Wedgwood cedar nicknamed Astra illustrates the stark difference between the old and new tree ordinances. In July 2023, developers filed an application to remove the tree under the old ordinance. When it became clear the developers would have to keep the tree, SDCI proposed allowing them to move up their application date by two weeks to fall under the new ordinance, enabling the tree to be removed. Approving the tree’s removal did not result in a gain in either the size or number of new homes.  ( In February , someone damaged, or girdled, the tree by making a deep cut in its bark all the way around. The health of the tree isn’t known.)

The ordinance’s inflexible code language for lot placement and parking is also leading to increased tree removal. Last month, a massive West Seattle cedar nicknamed Henry was removed to make way for two single-family homes with accessible dwelling units and 10 parking spaces. The new ordinance has eliminated provisions allowing SDCI planners to request minor design changes, like reduced parking, to preserve trees. Without this flexibility, even trees well outside the footprint of new buildings face removal.

Disturbingly, Seattle’s front-line communities are losing the most trees under the new ordinance. The new rules permit 85% to 100% of lots in multifamily and mixed residential zones to be covered by buildings and pavement, creating “tree deserts.” A recent analysis  by Birds Connect Seattle overlays these new rules onto current Environmental Justice Priority areas, which the city identifies as having high racial and social equity disparities. This analysis reveals that continued development will result in the loss of at least 207 acres of trees in front-line communities, undermining climate justice and the benefits of trees.

Seattle already ranks fifth in the nation  for urban heat islands, posing serious health risks. The city’s  2021 tree canopy study  also highlighted the unequal distribution of trees and the effects of that pattern, with people living in deforested neighborhoods like South Park and Beacon Hill experiencing shorter life spans and poorer health . While Seattle’s new Tree Canopy Equity and Resilience Plan  aims to plant new trees in underserved areas, saplings on public land cannot compensate for the loss of hundreds of large, shade-providing residential trees during increasingly hot summers.

We urge elected leaders to uphold promises of preserving Seattle’s urban forest by revising the ordinance. Further delay risks codifying poor regulations into the One Seattle Plan and jeopardizing our tree canopy for the next decade. The time to act is now, before we irreversibly lose what makes our Emerald City green.

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest issues that the modern world faces today. To meet the wants of society, we are putting too much pressure on the natural environment. This leads to damage to nature. The soil is losing its fertility, and in most places, soil pollution makes it difficult to grow crops. Even air and water pollution is the effect of mass urbanization and industrialisation. Controlling the pollution is a need of the hour, however, this still gets neglected by us. I am delivering the speech to save the earth to make you aware of what can be done by each one of us sitting here. We can make our earth a better place to live by taking simple steps like planting a tree, throwing waste in proper bins, saying no to plastic bags, etc. Rather than complaining about pollution, such small steps must be taken to make our environment sustainable.

Government and international organizations must take proper steps to control pollution and save our mother earth. Environmental protection policies must be strictly enforced. Everyone has to come together to save our mother nature. 

Saving our environment is much more important today than ever before. The degrading quality of earth life is what we all are familiar with. However, the early signs of the upcoming destruction are visible. The harsh weather conditions, increased carbon dioxide emissions, melting of glaciers, etc. are the major concerns that needed immediate attention. Increasing population equals more need for food, clothing, and housing. More land is needed to grow food and provide housing for people. Deforestation occurs, as a result, contributing to environmental degradation.

Deforestation is also caused by using forest areas for agriculture, livestock grazing, fuelwood harvesting, and logging. When forest size decreases, deforestation contributes to global warming by releasing carbon into the atmosphere.

The exhaust gas released by industries is one of the primary sources of pollution. Lead is found in large concentrations in the environment due to a range of substances such as gasoline, paints, ceramics, and batteries.

In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of private vehicles. The higher the number of cars, the higher the rate of pollution that causes smog. Lower-level ozone, which is detrimental, is caused by hydrocarbons emitted by engines.

Causes of Deforestation

Agricultural plantations are one of the major causes of deforestation. Demand for commodities like soybeans and palm oil has increased exponentially worldwide. This results in the demand for more land and cutting down trees.

Logging is another big cause of deforestation.  Wood-based industries like match sticks, paper and furniture need an enormous amount of wood. Charcoal and firewood are also useful as fuel. This results in a large part of forests being cut down.

Therefore climate change is an unavoidable effect of deforestation.

Moist soil, which is nutrient for vegetation, is exposed to heat by the sun when forests are cut down. Thus the drying up of soil and its nutrients results in its erosion with rainwater. Gradually reducing the soil potential and making it barren in the future.

Trees retain the moisture in their roots thereby balancing the ecosystem. When the process is broken by cutting the trees the atmosphere and the water bodies get dried up. Destroying forests affects the atmosphere, water cycle, and water bodies.

80% of the world species belongs to Tropical Rainforest. While destroying the forest, the existence of these species is in danger. This is a great loss of biodiversity.

Educating people around us would create awareness about the negative effects of deforestation. Planting more and more trees and using renewable wood resources can be of great help. Eating less meat or turning vegan would protect the forest from livestock ranching. Reduce and recycle the use of paper. The government must have forest-friendly policies. It shall ban the cutting down of forests.

Inside the Climate Protests Hell-Bent on Stopping Tesla

Mara is sick. The 24-year-old has been living in a mosquito-infested forest near Tesla’s German gigafactory since March, and despite the 78 degrees Fahrenheit heat, a cold is spreading through the camp. Sitting on a makeshift bench, she tells me how she left Berlin to live among the pine trees, roughly an hour’s drive outside the city, in an attempt to stop the company from expanding.

This week, she will be joined by the notorious German climate group Here And No Further (Ende Gelände), known for its theatrical, often law-breaking blockades, for a five-day-long protest. Anticipating the arrival of hundreds of demonstrators, Tesla said it would shut the factory for four days, telling its employees to work from home, according to an internal email obtained by the German newspaper Handelsblatt .

Despite the absence of Tesla workers, the company employees and local authorities will be on high alert for troublemakers. The factory is separated from the forest by only a thin fence, and as I walk the forest track tracing the factory’s perimeter, a police car lumbers slowly past, carrying out patrols. On the two days I visit, a black Tesla stands guard at the end of the path connecting the factory fence and the forest camp.

Mara, who declines to share her surname, vaguely estimates that there are 50 to 100 people involved in this anti-Tesla movement. But on a Thursday afternoon, the camp is quiet. Above us is a city of treehouses. She shows me where she sleeps, a broad wooden platform—built 10 or so meters aboveground and draped in green tarpaulin. The height provides some respite from the mosquitoes, she says, as I catch three sinking into my arm at once. A man with a partially shaved head lies on a salmon-colored sofa eating cake. Closer to the road, activists talk in raised tones about Israel. Several people are barefoot. The group expresses its politics in banners hanging from the trees—electric cars are not “climate protection”; “water is a human right”; “there is no anticolonialism without a free Palestine.”

Germany is Europe’s car-manufacturing heartland, the birthplace of BMW, Volkswagen, and Porsche. So why Tesla? The company’s presence threatens everything from local water supplies to democracy itself, she argues. “This is an existential issue.”

Their reasons for being here are part environmental, part anti-capitalist, Mara explains, turning a piece of bark between dirt-encrusted fingernails. Tesla’s ambition, to produce 1 million electric cars a year in Germany, isn’t in service to the climate, Mara says. Instead she describes the 300-hectare Tesla factory as a byproduct of “green capitalism,” a plot by companies to appear environmentally friendly in order to convince consumers to keep buying more stuff. “This has been completely thought up by such companies to have more growth, even in times of an environmental crisis,” she says, adding that the protesters have had no contact with Tesla.

To people like Mara, Tesla is a symbol of how the green transition went wrong and, as a result, the company’s German gigafactory has become the target of increasingly radical protests. The activists moved into the forest in February, in an attempt to physically block Tesla from clearing another 100 hectares of forest for its expansion. One month after the forest camp appeared, unknown saboteurs blew up a nearby power line, forcing the factory to close for one week . (A left-wing protest group called Vulkan, whose members are anonymous claimed responsibility for the action .)

Tesla should be the poster-child of the green transition. It is among the world’s most valuable companies, credited widely by analysts and journalists with turning electric vehicles from a quirky curiosity into a market worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Yet different generations of German environmentalists are now challenging clean energy orthodoxy and calling Tesla’s green credentials a sham. They complain that the new green economy is almost indistinguishable from its fossil-fuel-powered predecessor. The problems, they claim, are basically the same: the billionaires who believe they’re above the rules, the environmentally destructive mining required for electric car batteries, the industry’s disruption of communities in the global south , and unsafe working conditions . Tesla did not reply to WIRED’s request for comment.

German eco-activists’ interest in Tesla all started with local Manu Hoyer, the face of the anti-Tesla residents group the Grünheide Citizens’ Initiative (Bürgerinitiative Grünheide). The 64-year-old has lived in the Tesla’s local municipality of Grünheide for the past two decades, and ever since the factory’s arrival was first announced in 2019 she has worried about its impact on local water supplies. As with most cars, building a single Tesla requires thousands of liters, and the Grünheide factory is licensed to use 1.4 million cubic meters per year—similar to the demands of a large town. “They're stealing the water from the residents,” says Hoyer, noting that this area is among the most water-scarce in Germany.

She is not only concerned about Tesla using up local water supplies but also the potential that the company will contaminate them. To her, Tesla is a chemicals factory. “They use lots of paints and solvents that are toxic, and there's a very high danger that they contaminate the groundwater,” she claims. This is not an issue unique to Germany. In 2019, the US Environmental Protection Agency fined Tesla for hazardous waste violations at its California plant, prompting the carmaker to give hazardous-waste training to over 1,100 people working in its paint shop.

Hoyer was frustrated how, despite these concerns, German officials “rolled out the red carpet” for Musk. As we sit under pine trees earmarked to be cut down, she explains how for years this was a lonely battle. They were just a handful of locals trying to hold the German public’s attention through the pandemic and its aftermath. Then, last year, she had the idea to reach out to left-wing groups in Berlin, who she thought might help the cause regain some momentum. “We are too small to mobilize significant amounts of people on our own,” she says.

That idea worked. At a café in Berlin, I meet 41-year-old Esther Kamm, on her way to hand out leaflets about Tesla to the crowds attending May Day rallies. Kamm decided to get involved in the fight against the factory after friends told her about a speech Hoyer gave last year, asking for reinforcements in her fight against Tesla. The data scientist had taken a 12-year break from activism, focused instead on raising her kids. But this fight reminded her of her student days as an anti-nuclear activist. The dynamics were the same, she says: “private profit against the needs of the environment and local people.”

For Kamm, now part of the group Turn Off the Tap on Tesla (known by its German initialism TDHA), the battle against the company is both personal and political. Her Berlin neighborhood, Friedrichshain, sources its drinking water from an area downstream of the Tesla plant, she says, making her worry that chemicals from the factory could eventually end up in her kitchen. Ecology experts have expressed similar concerns. Any groundwater contamination “may eventually spread,” says Tobias Goldhammer, a scientist at The Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries. But Kamm also sees Tesla as a symbol of how the green transition is being hijacked for profit. “Companies like Tesla are there to save the car industry, they're not there to save the climate,” she says.

Instead she wishes more resources were being spent on building affordable public transport networks, not replacing fossil-fuel cars with electric ones. The green transition was supposed to be an opportunity to radically restructure the economy, she says, not just electrify the one we already have. There is also a sense of disappointment that it’s people like Elon Musk—a controversial figure in Germany after his interactions with the far-right AfD party on X—that will benefit from the new system. “I really wish that Tesla eventually says, ‘Fuck it, let’s leave [Germany], it’s not worth all the people opposing us,’” she says, stressing this is her personal opinion, not the position of TDHA.

Mara, Hoyer, and Kamm represent a broad anti-Tesla alliance of local residents with two generations of climate activists. Each group has different aims for the future of the factory. Hoyer just wants to stop its expansion, believing Tesla is unlikely to leave altogether. Mara talks about forcing Musk out and using the factory to build truly green technology. Kamm suggests the factory could be repurposed to manufacture buses or bikes. Yet the three women are currently united in their opposition against the expansion, ahead of a local government vote that is expected on May 16.

This week, all three will attend the five-day-long demonstration in the forest, designed to rally Tesla’s opposition. The threat of sabotage hangs over the plans, with the presence of Ende Gelände, which has previously focused on protesting coal mines or natural gas terminals. The group has also been trying to disrupt the German car industry, says spokesperson Jule Fink. “We are not only targeting electric vehicles but all the big car companies.”

Musk called the previous sabotage attempt—claimed by an unknown group of people called the Volcano group—as “extremely dumb.” But the act illustrated how much damage the anti-Tesla movement can cause the company. Estimates suggest that the arson cost Tesla hundreds of millions of euros. Still, no one has been charged.

The new wave of radical climate groups are hesitant to cause problems in areas where their presence is not endorsed by locals. But in a nonbinding vote in February, 3,499 residents said they were against Tesla’s expansion plans, with 1,882 in favor. In Hoyer, the activists also appear to have an endorsement for more radical tactics. “The Citizens' Initiative of course condemns any acts of violence,” says Hoyer, as we discuss the arson attack. But she believes it showed the factory’s vulnerability. “I think it was a good thing.”

Ocean noise pollution can extend beyond individual animals to impact entire ecosystems. Here are the facts and how you can help.

Ocean noise broadly refers to the noise made by human activity that can obstruct the ability of marine animals to hear natural sounds in the ocean. Anthropogenic noise has been increasing over the years, even doubling each decade in some areas of the world. This noise can mask communication between aquatic animals and decrease their ability to find prey or be aware of predators, among other problems. This type of noise pollution can impact individual species from disturbance to mortality if not controlled.

Ocean Noise Pollution Facts

• Sources of human-made ocean noise pollution include shipping vessels, sonar systems, seismic surveys, military exercises, and underwater construction.
• The intensity of ocean noise has increased dramatically over the past few decades due to the expansion of commercial shipping, offshore drilling, and other human activities.
• Marine mammals rely heavily on sound for communication, navigation, and finding food. Excessive noise can disrupt their behavior and cause stress, injury, or even death.
• Ocean noise pollution can also impact fish and invertebrates, affecting their ability to communicate, locate prey, and avoid predators.
• Research and monitoring efforts are ongoing to understand the impacts of ocean noise pollution better and develop effective strategies for its reduction.

What Is Ocean Noise?

Ocean noise can cause changes to the acoustic environment and adds increased stressors for marine life. Ocean noise can be sounds of low, medium, or high frequencies and is attributed to many different types of equipment. This noise can also cause habitat loss and can extend migration routes if it is too disturbing.

Marine life may also be indirectly affected if they stay, but their prey leaves the area because of noise disturbance. Some of the effects monitored in ocean life include stress, weak immune systems, and behavioral disturbances. 

Seismic Surveys

The type of equipment and practices that can affect marine life include seismic surveys, which use loud air guns. The sound can be generated every 10 seconds and can raise noise levels 100 times for days on end within a range of 300,000 square kilometers.

On any given day, there are more than 20 seismic survey ships active worldwide used to conduct surveys for the oil and gas industry.

Marine life can be killed directly by this noise as well as cause internal injuries to animals like the giant squid. There has been evidence of mass whale strandings because whales were injured internally or through their hearing-related structures.  

Impulsive Sound

Another source of problematic noise pollution is impulsive sound—sudden and short-duration sounds that are typically high in intensity and range from low to high frequencies. These are generally used in construction or marine civil engineering. The sound can reach up to 100 kiloHertz, and it can repeat every 10 to 15 seconds.

Sonars are included within impulsive sound but can be separated into different types of sonar. Low-frequency active sonars are usually used by the military and can generate between 100 to 500 Hertz.

Acoustic Deterrent Devices produce impulsive sound, which is used in an effort to reduce bycatch. These devices emit pulses of high-frequency sound and may be used to deter cetaceans from approaching fishing gear or to keep pinnipeds away from fish farms. These devices can produce sound with a frequency between 5 and 160 Hertz—though the intentions may be good, the noise can inflict pain on their target species, as well as unintended species. 

Explosives produce the highest level of noise. Controlled explosives may be used in underwater construction projects, such as the demolition of old structures like oil platforms, bridges, or underwater obstacles. Explosives may also be utilized for military purposes in naval warfare and defense. Underwater explosions can cause immediate and long-term harm to marine life.

Effects of Ocean Noise on Marine Life

Many species of marine life use noise as a means of survival. Some marine animals use calls during procreation or spawning, fish larvae follow sound to find a place to settle, and certain whales use echolocation to orient themselves or find food. Following are just some cases of animals that have been directly affected by ocean noise.

Researchers studying humpback whales in Glacier Bay National Park, United States, documented the effects of high noise exposure from tourism vessels. In competition with these vessels, the whales increased the amplitude of their voice by 0.8 decibels with every 1.0 decibel increase in ambient noise. However, they also vocalized less frequently.

Meanwhile, a 2028 study looking at humpback whales in Japan's Ogasawara Islands observed that the whales stopped vocalizing altogether when a cargo vessel passed within 1,400 meters, ununderscoring yet again how noise pollution can negatively impact these marine life.

Sound can be detected in two sensory systems in fish, with one system based on water motion and low frequency and the other being a frequency-dependent hearing system. Fish can, in general, hear best between frequencies of 30 to 1000 Hertz . When observing settling patterns in fish, many species use sound to orient themselves. One study found that damselfish that were conditioned to artificial noise actually became attracted to the noise, while those that were conditioned to noise from coral reefs avoided artificial noise. The authors concluded that artificial noise can cause confusion in animal species and disrupt orientation, and in doing so, could weaken the population.

Zooplankton

Microscopic zooplankton can be killed by the noise from a single seismic airgun. Zooplankton provides a source of food for the whole ocean ecosystem, but researchers have observed that airgun activity can reduce the number of zooplankton by half, which causes a lack of source of food for marine life. In the study, all immature krill were killed, and some zooplankton species decreased in number above 95%. This impact was observed up to 1.5 hours after the airgun had passed—note that most seismic surveys employ 18 to 48 airguns.

What Can Be Done?

The only certain way to lower the risk of impact is noise abatement—as in, reducing the amount of noise pollution entering the marine environment in the first place. This can be achieved by reducing noise emitted at the source, and by reducing the amount of noise-generating activity.

A study looking at noise abatement set out to determine the best twat o design noise abatement measures, concluding that, "broadly speaking, policy measures to manage environmental pollution can be categorised as command-and-control (CAC) approaches or incentive-based measures (IBMs), also known as market-based measures." CAC approaches would come in the form of mandatory measures. IBMs include cap-and-trade scenarios, "where transferable pollution permits are traded among polluters (affording control over cumulative pollution levels via the total number of permits), or through economic incentives, which encourage pollution reduction through subsidies or taxes linked to emissions."

The authors conclude: "As climate change and increasing human use of the oceans put growing strain on marine ecosystems, noise abatement presents a relatively tractable policy option to help reduce the cumulative burden of anthropogenic pressure on Earth’s marine habitats."

How Can You Help Reduce Ocean Noise Pollution

• Raise awareness: Educate yourself and others about the harmful effects of ocean noise on marine life.
• Reduce personal noise: Minimize the noise you make when boating or participating in water activities.
• Choose quieter watercraft: If you own a boat or personal watercraft, opt for quieter models with noise-reducing features. Consider electric or hybrid engines, which produce less noise and emissions.
• Buy locally! Reducing your dependence on items shipped on cargo ships from overseas helps lessen your personal ocean-noise footprint.
• Promote responsible fishing practices: Encourage sustainable fishing practices that minimize the use of loud equipment and engines.
• Support marine protected areas: Advocate for the creation and expansion of marine protected areas to provide safe havens for marine life and reduce impacts from human activities.
• Support organizations working on noise reduction: These groups often engage in research, advocacy, and policy work to protect marine environments.
• Support regulations and policies: Stay informed about local and international regulations related to ocean noise pollution. Support initiatives that aim to regulate and mitigate noise from shipping, offshore construction, and other industrial activities.

Dozens of Duke graduates walk out in protest of Jerry Seinfeld’s commencement speech

DURHAM, N.C. (Gray News) – Some students at Duke University walked out in protest during Jerry Seinfeld’s graduation speech on Sunday.

The students walked out in support of Palestine. Seinfeld has been vocal about his support of Israel during the war.

The Associated Press reported that about 30 of the 7,000 graduates left their seats and chanted “Free Palestine,” but an attendee who recorded video from the stands estimated it was closer to 200 students.

When Seinfeld took the stage to give his commencement speech, he was met with a mixed reaction from the crowd, hearing both cheers and boos.

The walk-out by graduates at Duke echoed weeks of protests at universities nationwide from Columbia in New York to UCLA. According to the Associated Press, nearly 2,900 arrets have been made at 57 colleges and universities.

Students protesting on college campuses are calling for their schools to cut ties with Israel and businesses that support it.

The war between Israel and Palestine started when organization Hamas attacked Israel and killed about 1,200 people on Oct. 7. The ensuing war has killed nearly 35,000 in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
