An image of students at the 2022 poster program.

Sunnybrook Research Institute offers a Summer Student Research Program that provides undergraduate students with a unique hospital-based research experience and showcases the postgraduate environment as a prospective career. The program, which runs from May to late August, starts with an orientation to SRI, and is followed by regular seminars whereby leading faculty talk about their research. In August, students present their work at the Summer Student Poster Competition.

Applications are now being accepted for summer 2024, please contact the labs directly by visiting our Scientist Profiles .

Deadline: Friday, March 29th 2024 at 4 p.m.

Eligibility

For all our student programs, with the exception of the Focused Ultrasound High School Summer Research Program , students must be enrolled in a university program (it does not need to be the University of Toronto) and hold at least a B+ average in their most recent year of study. Students who have recently completed a program before the summer but who show strong evidence of an intended career trajectory in medical research may be considered. Students holding a visa are eligible only if the visa permits.

How to apply

Students interested in a summer placement should contact scientists with whom they are interested in working. It is good practice to send them your resume, cover letter, and transcript when you reach out to express your interest. Once you and your supervisor are in agreement with program guidelines, you will work together to complete and submit required HR new hire documentation. Please note applications are due March 29, 2024 at 4 p.m. Successful applicants will be connected to a platform manager for on-boarding instructions. For the summer student programs in Brain Sciences and Focused Ultrasound , follow the links for separate application instructions.

When you get to SRI

Students who are successful in obtaining summer employment will receive an orientation at the beginning of the term. Students are encouraged to attend the weekly seminar series to gain exposure to a variety of research areas and topics, and to interact with scientists and other students.

Summer Student Poster Competition

Every year, students who have been funded through the SRI Summer Student Research Program and any other research summer student who has been hired through Sunnybrook's research administration is invited to showcase their research projects by participating in the Summer Student Poster Competition held on August 14 th , 2024 in the McLaughlin Auditorium. Read about previous years’ summer research project competitions.

Funding options

Summer students are hired as SRI employees and paid an hourly wage. The supervisor agrees to cover the salary and can apply for awards to offset this obligation. Programs such as the SRI Summer Studentship Award is designed to attract outstanding university students into postgraduate careers. This award is granted to the top 25 ranked applications. Successful applicants will be notified by April 26, 2024.

All applicants are encouraged to contact their home institution’s resources department for additional funding opportunities. University of Toronto students can also apply via stipend programs such as SURP or CREMS .

$17.21* for post year 1 students $18.24* for post year 2 students $19.34* for post year 3 and beyond students

The hourly rate includes compensation for vacation, with a 4% increment.

An Israeli mother in Toronto says two of her children have experienced repeated bullying and antisemitic threats at a local school, and the Toronto District School Board has failed to take adequate action.

Adi Cohen and her husband have four children, in grades 8, 5, and 3 and the youngest is in senior kindergarten.

Cohen said her two older children have been the subject of repeated bullying at North York’s Faywood Arts-Based Curriculum School, in incidents that predate Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel but have escalated since then.

She said there have been death threats against her children, and she has filed three police reports following what she describes as a failure on the school’s part to create a safe environment for Jewish students.

The incidents prompted a “community support walk” on Friday morning, at Cohen and her husband’s request, allowing her son to safely walk to school.

In one incident, Cohen said her second oldest child was targeted when his older brother was at lunch and a group of students uttered death threats and told him his older brother wasn’t there to protect him.

“They told him, we need to kill you. They started shoving and kicking him. And he was really vulnerable and by himself in that situation, the vice principal who was outside in the playground, she was standing probably far away, so she couldn’t hear what was transpiring, but when it started to become physical, she went to defuse the situation. And when my son told her, ‘Can I please share with you what happened?’ She told him ‘I don’t have time for this’,” Cohen said.

Cohen said her oldest child later approached the group after learning what happened and it resulted in a physical altercation.

Cohen said she and her husband, who are Israeli doctors who came to Canada in July 2022 on a fellowship, were only made aware of the most recent incidents when they returned home from work, around 6 p.m., and their children explained what happened.

“We were at a bit of loss. But that same evening, a parent knocked on our door saying, ‘I’ve heard so and so happened from my child. I want to just make sure that you’re all OK,” she said, adding that their experience is just one of many similar incidents that Jewish students have faced.

After attending the school the following day to speak with the vice principal and principal, Cohen said an investigation was launched and later concluded that “comments were made on both sides.”

Cohen said when she pressed for details about what her son said, she was told her son told the group to “go back to their homeland.” But her son denies that accusation, stating he said “go to your room lunch.”

“He has a pretty heavy accent,” she said. “And they took the aggressors’ words for what happened without even asking and the aggressors denied everything that happened.”

Cohen said the investigation was reopened following another meeting with parents and representatives of the TDSB. She said she was told by another principal that the second investigation found that the incidents happened as her son described them, but she has no idea if the other children involved faced any consequences for their actions due to privacy laws.

In another incident, Cohen said her son was bullied on video and the video was shared among students on social media. She said a substitute teacher did little to intervene and eventually her son was provoked into trying to grab the phone away from the other students.

“The school is doing nothing, the teacher was doing nothing, they just let it happen. At some point, he got so frustrated, he tried to physically take the phone away and then they wanted to suspend him for violence,” she said.

Cohen said in the latest incident, which happened earlier this week, students threw sticks, stones and a water bottle at her son as he walked to school. Cohen said she has filed a police report, her third, about the incident.

In addition to death threats, she said her son has been told by other students that they will “do to him what Hamas did to Israel.”

Ahead of Friday’s support walk, which Cohen said was organized via a community WhatsApp group, a flyer was circulated to garner support.

It reads, in part, “Our community must act. If school can’t keep our kids safe, we will.” The flyer also urged “no megaphones, no flags, this is about our children’s safety.”

Cohen said the walk, and the support offered by other families, was “very helpful.”

“I do believe that he feels that he’s not alone,” she said. “And it gives him the courage and the strength to keep on standing up for himself and for others.”

She adds that the family will soon be returning to Israel, and with about a month left in the school year, she just wants her “child to be safe.”

“They need to do something,” she said of the school. “They’re doing literally nothing. They say they’re doing stuff but nobody knows what they’re doing.”

A request for comment to the TDSB was not returned by deadline.

Cohen said other students at the school are “terrified” and families have thanked her for speaking out about what’s happening.

“I just need this to stop,” she said. “I need to know that my son is going to school and that he’s safe and that he’s been taken care of. And that I won’t get a phone call from the hospital saying something happened.”

Digital humanities summer fellowships awarded to four doctoral students.

Digital Humanities Summer Fellowships awarded to four doctoral students

Dinsdale Learning Commons

The Center for Digital Research in the Humanities announced its 2024 cohort of Digital Humanities Summer Fellows.

“This year we had the highest number of applications we’ve ever received, with lots of amazing, meritorious projects,” said Carrie Heitman, associate director and fellow of the CDRH and director of the 2024 Digital Humanities Summer Fellowships.

According to Heitman, the selection process was extremely difficult, but she had help from the other members of the CDRH’s Student-Centered Committee who reviewed the applications with her. Kevin McMullen, Katrina Jagodinsky, and Laura Weakly helped Heitman bring together a dynamic group of young scholars who will continue to push the field of digital humanities forward.

The 2024 Digital Humanities Summer Fellows are:

Akua Agyeiwaa Denkyi-Manieson , Ph.D. student in English at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, received her master’s degree in English from the University of Ghana and her bachelor’s degree in English and history from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Her project, Digitizing Gold Coast Novels, focuses on four novels written by African authors during Britain’s colonial occupation, 1821 to 1957. Because of the relative inaccessibility, these novels have been left out of the literary canon. Her goal this summer is to digitize and make them available to scholars and readers.

Andrea Wagh , a third-year Ph.D. student in history at UNL, received her master’s degree in history from UNL and her bachelor’s degree in history from Sam Houston State University. Her project, Hidden Histories, aims to create interactive maps to visually trace the lived experiences of Jewish children and the network of French orphanages that hid them during the Holocaust.

Héctor Palala Martínez , a Ph.D. candidate at UNL in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education, received his master’s degrees in educational studies from UNL and the Universidad Rafael Landívar, Guatemala, and his bachelor’s degree in educational studies and languages from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. His project focuses on building a digital platform to feature trilingual poetry by Mayan heritage students in Wakefield, Nebraska, aiming to enrich educational curricula and celebrate cultural diversity.

Rasaq Malik Gbolahan , a third-year Ph.D. student in literary and cultural studies in the Department of English at UNL, received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. This summer, he will work on Translating African Women Poetry in the Digital Age to translate selected English poems of African women poets published in online literary magazines and in print into Yoruba. These translated poems will be published on Atelewo , a decolonial project/initiative cofounded by Gbolahan in 2017.

The fellowship begins on May 28, and runs until Aug. 16, and each student will receive a $4,500 stipend. The students will spend the first half of the fellowship working on their projects in the Dinsdale Family Learning Commons. There they will have access to technology and the expertise of faculty and staff with the CDRH. The fellowship program is designed to support the students’ research, scholarship, professional development, and creative production skills.
