We Develop Great Scholars

Our faculty are passionate about excellent research . It shows: the M&O department is consistently in the top 10 in the world for publications in top management journals.

We do it by collaborating . Our doctoral students consistently publish with two, three, or four faculty members  while they are in the program, and for years afterward.

Our faculty are world-renowned and consistently win awards for their scholarship. Examples:

  • Stanford’s list of the top 2% of research scientists in the world: Denny Gioia, Raghu Garud, Don Hambrick, Aparna Joshi, Linda Trevino, Wenpin Tsai.
  • Fellows of the Academy of Management: Aparna Joshi, Linda Trevino, Don Hambrick, Denny Gioia.
  • Distinguished Scholars for the Academy of Management divisions: Barbara Gray, Raghu Garud, Denny Gioia, Don Hambrick, Linda Trevino.
  • Don Hambrick is the former President of the Academy of Management (1992-1993), and received Lifetime Distinguished Scholar and Distinguished Educator Awards.
  • Early Career Award, Research Methods Division:  Margaret Luciano
  • Best Paper awards: Raghu Garud, JBV, JMI, and Emerald Literati Award; Denny Gioia, ASQ; Stephen Humphrey, AMJ; Aparna Joshi, AMJ, OBHDP, HRMJ; Linda Trevino, AMR, AMLE;
  • Teaching awards; Carolyn Dang, Raghu Garud, Denny Gioia, Don Hambrick, Margaret Luciano, Vilmos Misangyi and others.
  • Many faculty have served as Co-Editors, Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members of key field journals including: AMJ, AMR, ASQ, SMJ, Org. Science, AoM Annals, and JBV.
  • Several faculty are known for producing seminal papers establishing new lines of inquiry or new directions for existing theoretical domains.

We study challenging managerial and societal problems combining insights from Organizational Behavior, Organization Theory, Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and other disciplines to generate and test interesting theory.  Our collegial sharing helps us create more interesting, relevant, and path-breaking work. Watch the videos below to see faculty members discussing their work with doctoral students.

How We Help You Build Your Scholarship

From your first day in the PhD Program you are involved in research working   collaboratively with your advisor on a research project for publication.

The course work is structured to optimize your research.

  • In year 1, you take foundational courses in Strategy, Organizational Behavior, Organization Theory, Research Design and Methods, and write a qualifying exam. Electives and additional methods courses in your second year support your research development (see Program of Study).
  • You drive your own independent research project for a second-year paper, which you defend in the fall of your third year (your comprehensive exam), giving you the chance to publish first-authored research by the time you enter the job market.
  • This deep focus on research is great preparation for your dissertation. Multiple students have had their dissertations recognized in the prestigious INFORMS dissertation proposal awards, including Priyanka Dwivedi (A. Joshi), Abhinav Gupta (F. Briscoe), Tiffany Johnson (A. Joshi), and Chad Murphy (G. Kreiner).

Program of Study for the PhD

Program of Study (at least 37 credits)

We set you up for success in teaching.  We offer a teaching camp and mentoring to give you the skills you need to succeed. You teach two courses during your program, giving you two sets of teaching evaluations to include with your application for faculty positions.

We build a vibrant community.  We foster a strong collegial and social environment to enrich your scholarship and also your life. Social events, seminars and meetings with your advisor, other faculty and other students will help you build connections and test your own research with others. At Smeal College’s M&O department, you become a member of the department and interact with everyone.

Ph.D . Program

With leading researchers in economic theory, econometrics, international economics, and macroeconomics, the Economics Department at Penn State is an outstanding department (faculty areas of interest may be found here) .  Students who receive a Ph.D. from Penn State and whose doctoral research is excellent have been recruited and sought after by leading academic and research institutions: our Ph.D. students have obtained tenure-track positions at Chicago, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Northwestern, NYU, UPenn and many more.  Our recent placements of students at different universities may be found here .

There are several reasons Penn State has excellent placement, and is a special place to do graduate school. Graduate student training and placement are priorities for the department, and therefore, our faculty members across fields are widely accessible to graduate students. In addition to many elective classes, there are reading groups within each field, with active involvement from students and faculty. The Department takes very seriously its mission to train the excellent students admitted to our PhD program.

Penn State is located in a pleasant college town setting in the geographic center of Pennsylvania. Although it is in a small town, it is not isolated intellectually. There is an active program of visiting speakers in five separate workshops. In addition, the department hosts conferences across several fields. There is a twice yearly joint Penn State-Cornell conference at which graduate students make about half the presentations. The Department also encourages students to present their work at external conferences, and our students present at Meetings of the Econometric Society and other conferences.

STEM Designation Our graduate program (MA and PhD) has been reclassified as STEM (CIP Code 45.0603: Econometrics and Quantitative Economics). Students in STEM degree programs can apply for a 24 month STEM extension of F1 Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Ph.D. in Kinesiology

Woman monitoring runner with mask on treadmill in laboratory

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Kinesiology prepares graduates for careers in research and teaching at universities as well as for careers in industry.

Doctoral students in our program investigate fundamental questions about kinesiology and gain broad understanding of the research methods used to answer these questions. Students pursuing the Ph.D. will attain a significantly greater depth of knowledge in the chosen area of emphasis than would be encountered in the M.S. program. All Ph.D. students complete a dissertation that typically several original works of research leading to multiple publications in one of six interdisciplinary areas of study:

Dual-Title Ph.D. Opportunities

Dual-title degrees give doctoral students the opportunity to receive significant training in two different programs and thus broaden the scope of a doctorate in Kinesiology.   Upon graduation, the Ph.D. degree carries the designation of  Kinesiology as well as a secondary program. Students in dual-title degree programs complete an integrated curriculum that goes beyond a Kinesiology degree with a minor in another field. Two dual-title Ph.D. programs are currently offered:

  • Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Bioethics
  • Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Clinical and Translational Sciences

Program description.

This major provides students with knowledge and skills managers need to deal with contemporary management challenges, such as leading and motivating people of different ages and backgrounds, developing strategies for competing in the global economy, and balancing the interest of multiple stakeholders in a complex legal, political, and ethical environment. The management core provides a foundational knowledge, skills and competencies essential for being effective and ethical managers and strategic leaders of organizations in a global environment. Students then choose from a host of electives designed to provide the requisite supplementary knowledge, skills and abilities for a wide range of career trajectories.

What is Management?

Organizations need managers and leaders: people who can effectively lead organizations and manage the people in them, as well as develop and implement strategies that will lead to success. Management majors gain the knowledge and skills that will enable them to deal with the contemporary challenges facing organizations including leading and motivating people, working effectively in teams, developing effective organizational cultures, thinking ethically, inclusively, strategically, and sustainably, balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders in complex, legal, political, and ethical environments, and leading change.

Credit used toward degree programs may need to be earned from a particular source or within time constraints (see Senate Policy 83-80 ). For more information, check the Suggested Academic Plan for your intended program.

Academic Advising

The objectives of the university's academic advising program are to help advisees identify and achieve their academic goals, to promote their intellectual discovery, and to encourage students to take advantage of both in-and out-of class educational opportunities in order that they become self-directed learners and decision makers.

Both advisers and advisees share responsibility for making the advising relationship succeed. By encouraging their advisees to become engaged in their education, to meet their educational goals, and to develop the habit of learning, advisers assume a significant educational role. The advisee's unit of enrollment will provide each advisee with a primary academic adviser, the information needed to plan the chosen program of study, and referrals to other specialized resources.

The University may make changes in policies, procedures, educational offerings, and requirements at any time. This plan should be used in conjunction with your degree audit (accessible in LionPATH as either an Academic Requirements or What If report). Please consult with a Penn State academic adviser on a regular basis to develop and refine an academic plan that is appropriate for you.

Course requires a grade of C or better

Entrance-to-Major Course – complete prior to attaining 59 cumulative credits at Penn State

Attain 12 th credit level proficiency in a world language (0-12 credits). Credits required vary based on predetermined skill level. Balance of remaining credits are taken as electives.

When planning general education and elective courses, students should factor in the following requirements:

  • 3 credits of United States Culture (US)
  • 3 credits of International Culture (IL)
  • 6 credits of Inter-Domain (N) and/or Linked (Z) coursework

See the Two-Piece Sequence list on the Management Department website.

See the Management Department website for the list of MGMT electives.

University Requirements and General Education Notes:

US and IL are abbreviations used to designate courses that satisfy Cultural Diversity Requirements (United States and International Cultures).

W, M, X, and Y are the suffixes at the end of a course number used to designate courses that satisfy University Writing Across the Curriculum requirement.

General Education includes Foundations (GWS and GQ), Knowledge Domains (GHW, GN, GA, GH, GS) and Integrative Studies (Inter-domain) requirements. N or Q (Honors) is the suffix at the end of a course number used to help identify an Inter-domain course, but the inter-domain attribute is used to fill audit requirements. Foundations courses (GWS and GQ) require a grade of 'C' or better.

All incoming Schreyer Honors College first-year students at University Park will take ENGL 137H / CAS 137H in the fall semester and ENGL 138T / CAS 138T in the spring semester. These courses carry the GWS designation and satisfy a portion of that General Education requirement. If the student’s program prescribes GWS these courses will replace both ENGL 15 / ENGL 30H and CAS 100A / CAS 100B / CAS 100C . Each course is 3 credits.

College and Department Notes:

  • The Smeal College of Business requires that the following entrance-to-major courses be taken at Penn State: ACCTG 211 , MGMT 301 , MKTG 301 , and FIN 301 .
  • Pursuant to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation standards, the Smeal College of Business requires that all upper division courses within the departments sponsoring the major be completed in residence at University Park under the instruction of Smeal College faculty.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Major

Petroleum and natural gas engineers solve crucial problems related to one of the most important resources for society today: energy. This engineering discipline is concerned with designing, implementing, and managing solutions for subsurface energy production and storage.

What is Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering?

Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering is a field related to extracting hydrocarbon resources (either crude oil or natural gas) from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum and natural gas engineers predominantly work in the upstream sector of the oil and energy industries, which comprises exploration, field development, well drilling, production and injection well optimization, and wastewater disposal and CO2 sequestration well planning. Once oil and gas are discovered, petroleum engineers determine optimum drilling and completion methods, monitor and manage production operations, and design reservoir development strategies. They are responsible for providing engineering solutions with global economic, environmental, geopolitical, and societal impacts. Petroleum and natural gas engineers work closely with geoscientists and other science and technology specialists. In addition to hydrocarbon extraction, they are also well-suited to solve complex problems in geothermal energy, geological carbon sequestration, hydrogen storage, wastewater disposal, and environmental remediation of soil, groundwater, and other geologic media.
