Theri review: Vijay is delightfully human, not his usual cold-face self

Theri has all the essentials one expects in a vijay starrer but central to the film is the father-daughter relationship and that’s where the film scores big..

When I walk into a Vijay film, I know exactly what I would be pounded with--cyclonic action, humongous heroism, nobility and syrupy romance. Vijay’s latest Robin Hood adventure, Theri, has all of these ingredients to make the movie into a masala that Indian cinema terms entertainment. In the first hour of the film’s run time of 158 minutes, I counted five songs and dances -- one of them with Vijay (playing Indian Police Service Officer, Vijay Kumar) and his lady love, Mithra (a Bengali name that Samantha sports), dressed in Arabian costumes! Here’s a curious case of imagination running wilder than the movie’s make-believe creation.

When Vijay is not swaying to the beat of the drums and the hum of the musical notes, he plays Mr Noble in Khaki, bumping off a powerful minister’s (Mahendran in his debut role, and what a fine piece of acting from a man who once directed classics like Uthiripookal and Nenjathai Killathey) son, because he molested and murdered a young Information Technology professional.

A shaken and shattered minister vows revenge which, as he says in his viciously terrifying voice, will be worse than death. Yes, death to Vijay’s wife -- Mithra had by then married the cop -- and his fun-loving mother, portrayed in her characteristic style by Radhika Sarathakumar. The couple’s daughter survives the bloody onslaught in a kind of incident that reminded me of Sholay and Gabbar Singh’s evil demolition of a happy family.

All this in Theri comes to us in a sequence of flashbacks, and the Tamil work’s opening shots are in Kerala, where Vijay in an assumed identity as Jacob Kuruvilla is playing papa, papa to his little daughter, Nivi (Baby Nainika, a brat whose smartness goes beyond cinematic liberty).

And Nivi’s teacher is Annie (Amy Jackson, in her usual wooden avatar, looking positively uncomfortable lisping Malayalam) who flips for Jacob and lets her inquisitiveness get the better of her. She finds out about Jacob’s past, but director Atlee keeps an important part of the man’s mysterious life for the final frame.

Beyond this, there is little novelty in a plot that only appears rehashed (probably for the nth time) with some annoying and ethically questionable police methodology. In this day and age, are we to go home after watching Theri where all that Vijay Kumar does is virtuous? Given the kind of fan craze one saw at the opening of the movie cinema must introspect on the kind of social message it spreads.

However, to be fair to Atlee and his Theri, I must say that he got Vijay into a rare emotional mould. The star actually cries a great deal more than he usually does. He has always had this tendency to mask his feelings with a cold, unexpressive face. This time, Vijay seemed delightfully human, essaying a very different kind of policeman, whose heart beats could be seen on his face.

Finally the day that Vijay fans were eagerly awaiting has arrived. Yes, we see the arrival of one of the most anticipated Tamil films of 2016, Theri . After an experimental Puli, Vijay gets back to his commercial route. The plot of the movie revolves around an ex-cop who is being revenged by an evil politician and the battle between the two. In simple words, Theri is a story about a good father versus a bad father. Vijay is the real Theri of the film; he brings in that spark to the floor. He sports three different makeovers and if his third get up had not been revealed in the trailer, there could have been a surprise element for the audience. Be it as a loving father or as an honest fearless cop or as a caring husband, Vijay shines in every frame. The Theri man has given his best. Overall a performance that will satisfy all center audiences and it is the most convincing cop avatar Vijay has portrayed. 20 minutes into the movie, there is Baasha kind of a moment for Vijay, his fans waiting for the real ‘Vijay kumar’ to erupt. You sense the restlessness, and when it does happen, it is the perfect first day first show fan moment. Special mention for editor Ruben for his fast cut edit pattern in the opening stunt. Jithu Jilladi is also one such addition for the fans to have a blast, creatively canned. One thing that goes against the film is the predictability factor. When there is a suspense moment, you would want the audience not to guess it right. But in Theri ’s case, viewers are able to connect the dots and predict what is going to happen next. Perhaps could be a case of trailer revealing more than needed. Atlee must be lauded for handling the emotional scenes very well, but few such scenes look a little force fitted and dramatic taking the pace away. Two duets also slow down the proceedings.  You would find a momentarily mass scene whenever you feel the screenplay is tilting towards the slower side, which would keep the crowd buzzing now and then. One of the best high points of the film would be the interval block. There are quite a few fight scenes in the film for fans and all are crisply choreographed. The biggest find of Theri is obviously the legendary director Mahendran’s acting skills. His mannerism, style and dialogue delivery are all top class. A couple of battle scenes between Mahendran and Vijay will be talked about. Motta Rajendran travels throughout the film but does not have too many chances to score, but whenever he gets a chance, he makes the best use of it. Theri could be one of Samantha’s best roles; she plays a doctor and has given out a soulful performance. Amy’s makeover in Theri as a teacher based out of Kerala, is quite convincing. Nainika is a doll and her expressions are just adorable. She scores the second highest claps and whistles in the hall, after Vijay. Theri will also be known for its visual brilliance. Be it the action sequences or the songs,  you would find some top notch camera angles as well as lighting, thanks to cinematographer George C Williams. GV Prakash’s background score definitely adds the mass as well as the emotional connect elegantly. One more credible work to his list.

On the whole, Theri is a little predictable emotional ride with some great performances, superlative technical work with a mix of commercial elements.

Theri movie review: Vijay’s limitations as an actor exposed in a predictable storyline

The movie, possibly the millionth remake of rajnikanth’s revenge film basha, where the hero is a daredevil with a larger-than-life persona, is yawn-inducing.

The much-anticipated scene from Theri, in which Vijay sings a nursery rhyme to some goons, and a few other scenes where his character’s supernatural abilities have been showcased, offer the only moments of relief in this “mass entertainer”.

It’s true that we don’t go to watch a Vijay film expecting a logical screenplay or sequences. But here, the passionate fanbase of an average actor with very little variety of expressions and body language does nothing but encourage a budding director to repeat a long-buried formula and storyline on the big screen.

The movie, possibly the millionth remake of Rajnikanth ’s revenge film Basha, where the hero is a daredevil with a larger-than-life persona, is yawn-inducing. In Theri, Vijay plays Joseph Kuruvilla, a baker who lives a peaceful life in Kerala with his daughter Nivi (Nainika). When Nivi’s school teacher Annie ( Amy Jackson ) shows interest in Joseph and follows him, his past is revealed — he was once Vijayakumar, the deputy commissioner of Chennai .

The story is predictable and Vijay’s limitations as an actor are exposed in melodramatic scenes. Nainika, daughter of south Indian actress Meena, looks charming. Samantha and Jackson both look like they were used to add to the glamour quotient. The saving grace is Mahendran , who enacted the antagonist’s role with ease.

Cinematographer George C Williams does a good job behind the camera, capturing the beautiful landscapes of Kerala, and GV Prakash’s songs go well with the total absurdity of the movie.

Theri depicts brutal violence, so the only question that remains at the end of the movie is, why did our overtly-sensitive censor board reward this movie with a ‘U’ certificate?

Critics Review

Theri review - not theriffic.

Theri's story is based on a simple revenge drama carried by an uninteresting screenplay with highly predictable scenes narrated over a painstakingly long run-time. It is obvious from the first reel that there is a gruesome past that the hero is trying to keep it under wraps. Director Atlee has no disguise as he unfolds some critical scenes. (more)

When Inspiration Reign Supreme!

Getting inspired is absolutely understandable. But, depending on the inspiration in order to sell your own product is a matter of grave concern. With a tried and tested storyline and an ordinary screenplay Theri is far from what was expected. However, it has all the ingredients required for a family entertainer. (more)

A little predictable, but an enjoyable mass ride with Vijay aka Vijay Kumar aka Joseph Kuruvilla

One thing that goes against the film is the predictability factor. When there is a suspense moment, you would want the audience not to guess it right. But in Theri's case, viewers are able to connect the dots and predict what is going to happen next. Perhaps could be a case of trailer revealing more than needed. (more)

Vijay fans might find this film 'Theri'-fic

A lot was expected from director Atlee but he has fallen short in this Vijay film. Having a star like Vijay he should have made maximum use of his talent, skills, and popularity. But he didn't. The story is very slow (especially in the first half) with many scenes that don't add value to the film. In the second half, the pace picks up but the 'Theri' moments in the film are few and far between. Casting Vijay as a cop is a coupe and Atlee could have taken this movie to another level if he had cut down on the heavy, constant sentiment that bogs down the film. (more)

This man is from Mass

I�m not saying you cannot find a place for these sentiments in a mass-hero movie, but the film ends up schizophrenic trying to balance them with the more macho stuff the actor�s fans want. So after all those tears, we end up with the hero as the ghost who walks, a phantom who appears out of nowhere to dole out justice. Someone like Netaji, we�re told, whose death remains unverified and who could be doing the kind of villain-dispatching the hero does here. In Kollywood, it�s just a little leap from INA to WTH. Movie review Theri: Story revealed in the beginning of the film

Theri, directed by Atlee and starring Vijay, is an emotion packed action entertainer that flirts with logic but which ultimately decides to forego it. The story it tries to narrate gets revealed before it could even get started when a tame and docile version of Vijay - Joseph Kuruvilla who runs a bakery is spotted in Kerala with his very young daughter Nivi (Baby Nainika) and with very little inclination to confront, let alone fight. When an incident involving his daughter and her school teacher Annie (Amy Jackson) puts this fragile reality into disarray, the history in the film commences: the tale of an IPS officer Vijaykumar (Vijay) in Chennai who is capable of enduring pain and anguish beyond most mortals while possessing the strength and agility to take out 20 men all by himself. When he locks horns with an influential politician Vaanamamalai (director Mahendran), all hell breaks loose and Vijay loses his family including his lovable wife Mithra (Samantha) and doting mother (Radhikaa), but manages to escape with little daughter. One can't help but remember Rajinikanth’s cult movie Baasha and Vijayakanth’s cop story 'Chatriyan'.

The film highly relies on Vijay's strength and charisma to carry it through, thus living up to the expectations and the huge pre hype created to some extent. There's certain bigness about his character that is seldom found in most actors. When the moment comes to raise his tempo, he does so with ease, and when he had to simmer down and act like a normal human being, he does that as well. It's as though his ego and pride are super flexible levers that he could turn and down, as and when he pleases. Samantha looks pretty and has fair amount of screen space compared to Amy who is just functional as a heroine. However, both heroines serve the purpose adding the glam quotient. It is Nainika, daughter of actress Meena who steals the show. She is adorable and spontaneous. The father-daughter bond works to partly with funny one-liners. Mahendran is the usual villain whom we have seen in 80s films. Radhikaa and Mottai Rajendren come out with a neat performance.

The first half moves at a slow pace, but post interval it picks up momentum. Too many issues like IT girl being brutally raped, mafia gang crippling children for begging, no safety norms for construction workers are being dealt with. Yet another drawback is that the narration is set in a formulaic pattern – moving from comedy to sentiments and then there are huge action blocks and finally finishes with song routines. Technically, cinematography by George C Williams is brilliant with colorful visuals be it in songs and the action sequences. GV Prakash’s background score warrants mention. The mass movie will be well savored by Ilayathalapathy’s ardent fans.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay's much awaited movie Theri has finally hit the screens. With a huge fan base in Kerala, Theri has managed to take the Kerala box office by storm by getting a solo big release in the state.

The action-thriller directed by Atlee, which is being distributed in Kerala by Friday Film House, in association with Carnival Pictures has reached 202 screens across Kerala and on top of it, special morning shows starting from 4 am was also arranged.

For Kerala fans, there is one more reason to celebrate as Vijay will be seen in triple role - one of which is as Kottayam native Joseph Kuruvilla. While Samantha will be seen as doctor Mithra, Amy Jackson has played the role of a Malayali teacher and child artiste Nainika plays a pivotal role in the movie.

Going by the initial reports, fans are celebrating the day and Theri has got houseful shows across the state. Check out for a few tweets:

Theri Movie Review

Illayathalapathy Vijay’s 59th movie Theri has finally released and the movie is directed by Raja Rani Fame Atlee and the movie is produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. The movie features Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson in predominant roles. Prabhu, Radhika Sarathkumar, Baby Nainikka, Rajendran, Santhanam, Kali Venkat were also part of the cast.

George C. Williams has done the cinematography. The editing work was done by Anthony L. Ruben and the music was composed by the super music director G.V. Prakash Kumar. The songs which were released earlier have received huge welcome by Vijay’s moviegoers. The songs such as “En Jeevan”, “Eena Meena Teka” and “Rangu”are hit songs from the movie.

Theri is a typical revenge action drama along with a superb message about parenting and how to bring them up by teaching good and bad things as they have to learn to face the world. The movie has more emotional scenes and there are also many stunt scenes which Vijay has done excellently. In Theri Vijay is seen in three characters namely Joseph Kuruvilla, Vijay Kumar, and Dharmeshwar.

Samatha has done role of spouse of Vijay and she goes by the name Mithra and she is a doctor in this movie. One of the Vijay’s characters is a cop and that is the highlight of the movie. Samantha has done justice to her role. The British girl Amy Jackson has acted as a Malayali teacher and Radhika Sarathkumar has done role of a single parent. Meena’s daughter Nainikka is the highlight of the movie. Her innocent dialogue delivery and face actions are a treat. George G. Williams has done a superb cinematography, the first half of the movie goes well and the second half falls flat with usual revenge. Atlee should have focused more on the revenge part. He kept it flat.

Overall, ‘Theri’ is not as ‘Terrifying’ as the teaser claimed to be!

Joseph Kuruvilla is a non-violent person, who runs a bakery and lives with his five-year old daughter Niveditha "Nivi" and they lead a peaceful life. Joseph soon befriends Nivi's teacher Annie, who starts developing a crush on him. However, Annie learns that Joseph is actually DCP Vijay Kumar, an honest cop in Chennai. When confronted with the truth, Joseph reveals his past. One night, Vijay meets an old man who comes up with a complaint to find his missing daughter Raji, an IT worker, where he investigates the case and within ten hours, only to find that she was sexually assaulted to death.

Vijay's further investigation led him to Ashwin, who is the son of Labour minister Vanamaamalai. After three days of Raji's death, Vijay heads to Vanamaamalai's house to arrest Ashwin, but Vanamaamalai and commissioner Sibi Chakravarthy inform him that Ashwin was missing since three days and Vijay was tasked of finding Ashwin. However, Vanamaamalai learns that Ashwin was murdered by Vijay himself, where he swears to seek vengeance on him for killing his son. One day, Vijay meets Mithra, a medical student where love blossoms grew between them and they decided to get married. However, Mithra was worried about Vijay's safety after an attack from Vanamaamalai's henchmen, but Vijay convinced her and both of them got married, and also given birth to Nivi and led a happy life.

However, Vanamaamalai and his brother Ratnam, along with their henchmen barged into Vijay's house one night, where they killed Mithra and Vijay's mother, and also attempted to drown Nivi. However, an injured Mithra saved the child and made Vijay to take a vow that he will raise Nivi as a non-violent person and would quit the police force. Vijay accepted Mithra's vow and faked his death in order to protect Nivi, before the explosion. After revealing his past, Vijay tells Annie to keep it as a secret from Nivi. During Nivi's excursion, Vanamaamalai knows he is alive, then Joseph sees the school bus swerve, because the brakes of her school bus is damaged and the bus falls from the bridge into a river. With the help of Annie and the local people, Vijay manages to rescue Nivi and other children, where he learns that Vanamaamalai (who has now learnt that Vijay is alive) is behind the accident and returns to his old self to seek vengeance against Vanamaamalai.

Vijay returns to Chennai and kills Inspector Karikalan, who is Vanamaamalai's henchmen and was also present at the night when Mithra was killed. At this point of time, Vanamaamalai and Ratnam have a fallout, where Vijay also kills him at night, by pushing him from the thirtieth floor. Finally, Vijay allows himself to be captured by Vanamaamalai's henchmen, where he kills everyone. The killings continue to be a mystery from the public, but Sibi Chakravarthy is aware that Vijay is alive and secretly re-employs him into the police force. Few years later, Vijay, an older Nivi and Annie are in Ladakh. Vijay, who has changed his identity to Dharmeshwar, continues to work for the CBI and also fulfilling Mithra's wishes.
