The UCF Nursing PhD curriculum is delivered online with two multiple-day onsite intensives per year.

The program requires a minimum of 63 credit hours beyond a master’s degree in nursing. This includes:

• 39 credit hours of required courses that focus on foundational knowledge development, and research methods and experiences;
• 15 dissertation credit hours; and
• 9 credit hours of supporting courses that develop student expertise in the area chosen for their dissertation. PhD students are encouraged to seek out interdisciplinary supporting courses.

Nurse Faculty Loan Program

Tuition can be expensive, and at Southern Miss, we want to help. In an effort to meet the demand for qualified nursing faculty, The University of Southern Mississippi is giving the opportunity to participate in the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) to both full-time and part-time students working toward the nursing leadership PhD The NFLP will eliminate up to 85% of student loans for students who plan to teach at any accredited school of nursing in the country after graduation.

Academic Progression

A sequence of courses, examinations, and a dissertation mark the students’ progression in the Ph.D. program.

• Selection of a Doctoral Program Committee.
• A comprehensive examination administered after all major coursework has been completed.
• Selection of a dissertation committee which will oversee the student’s work toward the degree.
• A final oral examination (dissertation defense) which covers the dissertation research and related fields administered at the completion of the dissertation – students should consult the Human Subjects Committee (IRB).
• Fulfillment of the residency requirement, which may be met by continuous enrollment of 6 semester hours for each of 4 consecutive semesters, or 9 semester hours for each of 3 consecutive semesters, or 12 semester hours for each of 2 consecutive semesters.
• Fulfillment of Research Tool(s) requirements.
• A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation.

Continuous Enrollment Requirement: Students must meet the requirement specified in the front section of Admission Requirements and Procedures page of the Bulletin.

Research and Scholarly Integrity Education

All graduate students must complete the CITI training modules required by the Graduate School and their departments the first semester they are enrolled in graduate school. The Department will require subsequent CITI training in other areas such as Human Subjects at a time closer to their dissertation. The RSIE policy and training information are found on the Graduate School web page –www.usm.edu/graduate-school. Contact the Dean of the Graduate School if you have any questions regarding the policy of training information. Further, all faculty supervising student research, including regular or associate graduate status faculty must complete the CITI training module required by the Graduate School and their department.

A total of 48 semester hours are required for graduation, including 12 dissertation hours.

The University of Southern Mississippi provides a Senior Citizen Tuition Scholarship Program for Mississippi residents age 62 or older. Legal residents of the State of Mississippi age 62 or older may enroll tuition-free in a maximum of six (6) semester hours for the fall or spring term. Courses on all campuses (Online, Hattiesburg, and Gulf Coast) are available to senior citizens on a space available, first come first serve basis.  This scholarship program applies to fall and spring courses only.

Admission Requirements

The purpose of the online Doctor of Philosophy degree in  Nursing  is to prepare scholars, with expertise in selected, substantive areas, who will contribute to the science and practice of  nursing  through systematic inquiry and theory development. Graduates will be prepared to meet state, regional, and national needs for doctorally prepared faculty in schools of  nursing  and other leadership positions in health-related organizations.

The Ph.D. program offers two tracks both 100% online: Post-Masters and BSN to Ph.D. The Post-Masters track requires 48 hours credits during a minimum of 24-30 months of full-time study. The BSN to Ph.D. track requires 60 hours credit during a minimum of 36-42 months of full-time study. Both full-time and part-time is available.

Admission to the online Ph.D. program depends upon sufficient enrollment, university resources, and qualifications of applicants. In addition to the criteria mentioned in  Admission Requirements and Procedures , a select number of students will be admitted to the program based on the following criteria as required by the School of Leadership and Advanced Nursing Practice:

• Graduate from a baccalaureate or master’s program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA for the most recent nursing degree.
• A current unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license.
• Curriculum vitae or professional resumé.
• Submission of three (3) letters of reference from individuals (doctoral level nursing individuals preferred ) familiar with the applicant’s academic/professional background and experience in nursing practice, specifying in detail the applicant’s capability for doctoral study.
• Cover letter of introduction and a personal statement of research interests submitted with the application.
• Supplemental Nursing Application .
• An interview (online or telephone).
• Proof of recent health examination to include (a) proof of immunization against the Hepatitis B virus, (b) current tuberculosis (TB) skin test or quantiFERON G test, (c) current Tdap immunization, (d) Evidence of immunity to varicella, and (e) current MMR immunization.
• Submit proof of a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
• Completion of a criminal background check and drug screen.

Exceptions to the above criteria must be approved by the School Director, the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions, and the Dean of the Graduate School.

• A final online oral examination (dissertation defense) which covers the dissertation research and related fields administered at the completion of the dissertation – students should consult the Human Subjects Committee (IRB).
• Fulfillment of the virtual residency requirement, which may be met by continuous online enrollment of 1) 6 semester hours for each of 4 consecutive semesters, or 2) 9 semester hours for each of 3 consecutive semesters, or 3) 12 semester hours for each of 2 consecutive semesters.

•  Undergraduate grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 grading scale
•  A bachelor’s degree in nursing from an NLN- or CCNE-accredited program
•  Licensure as a registered nurse in Kentucky or in the state where research will take place. International students do not need licensure as a registered nurse in Kentucky.

       Applicants who do not meet the above requirements are reviewed individually on a space-available basis.

NURS 577. Rural Healthcare Ethics. 3 Credits.

This course is directed toward the development of critical dialogue and leadership strategies for dealing with ethical issues related to nursing, health care and research. Commitment to discussion, understanding and acceptance of the rights of others in dilemmas is emphasized. Reflexive nursing, which brings attention to one's own position and objectivity, is encouraged. The challenges of ethics in rural milieus are included in the discourse. Prerequisite: Admission to the Nursing doctoral Program or consent of the instructor. S.

NURS 586. Rural Health Programs and Research. 3 Credits.

This course focuses on policies, programs and research related to rural health. Prerequisite: NURS 565 and NURS 558 or consent of instructor. F.

NURS 565. Rural Populations and Rural Health. 3 Credits.

This course provides an overview of characteristics of rural populations and rural health. Factors that contribute to health, morbidity, and mortality are examined, and the compounded vulnerability of rurality and disadvantaged groups is analyzed. How are the Ph.D. in nursing online courses offered?

UND is a top choice for an online Nursing Ph.D. We’ve designed the online Nursing Ph.D. to incorporate 100% online coursework and yearly face-to-face intensive experience visits on campus or at a regional research conference.

You must attend a face-to-face intensive experience each year during the spring semester while you are enrolled as a student. You are able to claim 4 credits (1 credit per year for four years) toward program requirements.

Designated synchronous classes are most often offered on Tuesdays from 11 – 2 p.m. or 3 – 6 p.m. CST, although some variation from this schedule may occur.

In your “live” online Nursing Ph.D. classes, you’ll:

• Interact with your instructors and other students using web conferencing technology
• See your instructor’s materials as though you were sitting in a classroom on the UND campus

In this manner, the class lectures, discussion and collaboration are conducted in a very similar fashion to traditional on campus classes.

In-Person Requirements

To complete your coursework in NURS 556, face-to-face intensive experiences are required once per year (usually in the spring semester) , but not always on campus. The intensive experiences are held on campus or at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Conference. You must be enroll in NURS 556 every spring until you graduate, and claim credit (1credit, four times), for a total of 4 credits. These intensive experiences are 3-4 days in length.  During your intensive experience, you will have the opportunity to meet with faculty, your advisor and your peers. You will be submersed into a community of scholars, gain skills in scholarly discourse and be mentored into your future role as a nurse scientist, through a variety of activities, presentations and workshops.

Admission Requirements

A baccalaureate or master’s degree in nursing from a U.S. program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or an international program with commensurate standards is required for admission to the PhD Program in Nursing.

Post-baccalaureate Students

Applicants with a baccalaureate degree in nursing must demonstrate exceptional academic qualifications, have clear research-oriented career goals, and choose a dissertation topic congruent with the research program of a Graduate Faculty member in the School of Nursing. Applicants with baccalaureate degrees must complete a nursing research and a graduate-level statistics course.

Applying for Admission

The following admission materials must be submitted online to the  Duke University Graduate School . Prospective applicants should familiarize themselves with the Graduate School requirements.

Official, confidential transcript(s) of all college-level coursework.

Optional GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores - Applicants can submit GRE scores should they feel the scores enhance their application. [Taken within the past 5 years]. Three letters of recommendation. These letters should be solicited from individuals with doctoral degrees who can address the applicant’s academic abilities and potential for doctoral study.

English language proficiency test scores. Foreign graduates must submit either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International Language Testing System (IELTS) accepted, but IELTS is preferred.

Personal Statement. Applicants should submit a paper (1 - 2 typed pages, 12-point font, single-spaced) indicating:

Purposes and objectives for undertaking graduate study

Research interests and career goals

Strengths and weaknesses in the chosen field

A description of a prior research project or research participation and how this has influenced career choice and desire to pursue graduate studies

Reasons for choosing Duke for PhD studies

Name(s) of PhD Nursing faculty members in the School whose research program most closely fits with the applicant’s research interests.

The application and the $95 application fee must be received by December 1.

Holistic Admissions

The Duke University School of Nursing PhD Program is committed to holistic admissions. A holistic review is a university admissions strategy that assesses an applicant’s unique experiences alongside traditional measures of academic achievement such as grades and test scores. It is designed to help universities consider a broad range of factors reflecting the applicant’s academic readiness, contribution to the incoming class, and potential for success both in school and later as a professional.

Holistic review, when used in combination with a variety of other mission-based practices, constitutes a holistic admission process. Many colleges and universities have employed a holistic admission process to assemble a diverse class of students with the background, qualities, and skills needed for success in the profession.

As part of the Duke University School of Nursing PhD Program holistic review process, faculty review principles of holistic admissions prior to reviewing applications. The PhD Program Admissions Committee utilizes an adapted version of the Duke University Center for Exemplary Mentoring holistic admissions review rubric to guide the evaluation of each applicant.

Personal Interview

Applicants may be asked to interview by Zoom or come to campus for an interview. The School covers the costs for campus interview travel except for international travel. International applicants are interviewed via Zoom.

The Columbia University School of Nursing PhD program is a full-time, research-intensive curriculum that prepares nurses for careers as nurse scientists who will conduct research across a broad range of populations and health conditions. Importantly, much of our research is focused on health disparity populations with the long-term goal of informing health policy and clinical practice across the lifespan.

Columbia Nursing provides three years (eight semesters) of funding for tuition, related fees, health insurance, and a stipend for full-time PhD students.

Program Design

Our PhD program provides students with an understanding of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of nursing science and a strong foundation in research methods (design, statistics, measurement, quantitative and qualitative methods) for clinical, translational and health services research. All students are mentored by research advisors with active programs of research as they move toward independent research and assume the roles of doctorally prepared nurse scientists.  

As a Columbia Nursing PhD student, you will learn to:

• Design, conduct, and report multidisciplinary research studies that increase knowledge to improve the health and well-being of patients and families across the lifespan
• Advance the state of the science in a substantive area of research through application of innovative and rigorous methods
• Promote health and well-being for individuals and families in the context of their communities
• Provide leadership in improving the health care delivery system at local, national, and international levels
• Collaborate with other professionals to evaluate and develop policies for delivery of health service
• Translate evidence accumulated through research into practice and policy at multiple levels

As part of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), Columbia Nursing enjoys a unique collaboration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, and the College of Dental Medicine. CUIMC provides myriad opportunities for interprofessional collaboration in research . 

The PhD curriculum builds on the foundation of nursing science by bringing together practice, policy, translational research, and leadership. The core courses provide the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct relevant and well-designed research studies. Electives strengthen an area of clinical interest or intensify understanding of a specific research or analytic method. 

Both post-master's and post-BSN students admitted to the program will complete a minimum of 57 credits. The curriculum plan is designed to make it possible to complete the program in three years for those students with clearly defined plans for their dissertation research.

PhD courses are offered in three major areas:

• Theoretical foundations of nursing science
• Analytical foundations of nursing science
• Electives and application

Students must be registered as full-time for the duration of the program (typically three to four years). The minimum number of semester credits in required coursework is 37 (four semesters) for eligibility to progress to the qualifying exam. Six of the 37 credits required to be completed prior to the qualifying examination are elective courses tailored to the student’s dissertation topic and/or dissertation methods. The PhD program requires nine credits of elective courses. A minimum of 57 total credits is required for program completion.

Qualifying Examination

The qualifying examination helped me to combine the content I learned in my courses and my research interests so I could further articulate my research question. Performing a scoping review on my topic of interest immersed me in the current literature and was crucial to the development of my dissertation. This experience prepared me to successfully work independently through the rest of my Ph.D.

In addition to coursework, students must successfully complete a qualifying examination with written and oral components. The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is awarded after successful completion of the qualifying examination and the student enters doctoral candidacy status.

Dissertation

Students are expected to successfully defend a dissertation reporting original research. Four dissertation credits are required each semester during the dissertation phase of study. 

Scholarship Expectations

My advisor and the Columbia Nursing faculty provided me exceptional guidance throughout the PhD program to extend my learning beyond the classroom with the goal of becoming an independent nurse scientist. I learned valuable skills and knowledge to successfully obtain a NIH-funded predoctoral training award, present research findings at local, regional, and national conferences, and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals with good impact factors.

Preparation for Postdoctoral Fellowship: Research Career Next Step 

The coursework and research mentoring at Columbia Nursing helped prepare me for the next steps in my education and career post-PhD. In addition to structured coursework and educational seminars, the school provided beneficial informal support and resources. Feedback sessions with both peers and faculty were very helpful in preparing me to present posters and presentations at research conferences. The school also provided funds for travel to conferences where I presented my research. The grant writing workshop and mock reviews of grant applications provided me with tools and feedback needed to successfully apply for additional funding for my research. Finally, interdisciplinary research collaborations with faculty provided me with opportunities to work with researchers from several disciplines to complete my dissertation.

What is it like to be a PhD student at Columbia Nursing?

Required courses (excluding electives).

Building upon the foundations provided in the quantitative and qualitative research method courses, in this course students examine advanced methods and frameworks frequently used in studying health policy, health services research problems and comparative effectiveness research. In addition to a critical review of the methods, the course examines the relationship among science, policy and healthcare delivery, and identifies critical questions shaping the future policy research agenda.

Interdisciplinary research is an approach to advancing scientific knowledge in which researchers from different disciplines work at the borders of those disciplines in order to address complex questions and problems. Successful interdisciplinary efforts require mastery of specific competencies. This seminar will introduce students to competencies in interdisciplinary research through a combination of readings, case studies, and lectures in each necessary aspect, chosen from fields essential to successful interdisciplinary research. It is intended to assist learners to understand why and how different professional disciplines must work together to generate and disseminate knowledge. We will examine: different conceptualizations of interdisciplinary; barriers to and facilitators of interdisciplinary research; approaches, benefits, and limitations of collaboration and team science; methods for measuring interdisciplinary collaboration; the intersection of translational and interdisciplinary scientific strategies; and individual researchers' experiences with and evaluations of their own interdisciplinary scientific projects. Learners will develop a set of skills to be effective members and leaders of interdisciplinary research teams.

The student works with a faculty member or other scientist who is conducting a research project. The specific nature of the experience depends on the nature and stage of the research, but might include search and review of relevant literature, data collection, data analysis and/or grant preparation.

This course is intended for PhD students who are engaged in relevant scholarly activities that are associated with dissertation research.

This foundational course will examine the philosophy of nursing knowledge including foundations of nursing theory, concept development, and its application to research. Students will explore approaches to the analysis and development of concepts and the application of nursing concepts and frameworks to clinical practice and research. Ideas, assumptions, events, people, and writings are examined for their influence, inter-relationships, and significance to nursing. Types of reasoning will be evaluated within the context of nursing and health. Major theories, frameworks, and concepts of nursing and health and their implication for research will be discussed. The focus of the course will be on development of critical thinking skills in analyzing key elements of philosophies, concepts, and conceptual frameworks.

In this foundational course students will study the links between theory and the psychosocial and biophysical measures used in nursing research.  Students will employ the principles of classical test theory and item response theory to evaluate the reliability and validity of measurement.  Application of computational techniques will be covered in the lab portion of the course.  Course topics include types and uses of measures, item/scale development and validation, survey methods, reporting for publication, and the relationships between measurement and research ethics, cultural competency, and health disparities.

This course provides a foundation for quantitative research methods and design. Research process topics examined include: appraisal of the quality of existing evidence; identification of gaps in the literature; formulation of researchable questions and testable hypotheses; types of research variables; sampling designs and power analyses; and the uses, strengths, and weaknesses of various experimental and quasi-experimental research designs.

This course provides an in-depth examination of qualitative study designs and methods through a combination of theoretical discussion and hands-on practical experience. Topics include paradigm distinctions, theoretical perspectives, designs and methods, critique of research reports, and ethical issues in qualitative research.

The course is intended for PhD students who are engaged in relevant scholarly activities that are not associated with the required course sequence. Such activities must accrue more than 20 hours/week.

This course is intended to provide a hands-on introduction to delivering data visualizations to serve as a critical lens through which individual and population level health can be examined. The proposed course will combine concepts and theory in data visualization and exploration and practice to enable the student to gain the necessary knowledge to use graphics and statistics to explore the data, find and construct a narrative, and share findings in ways colleagues and decision-makes can readily understand and act upon.

This course is designed to provide the tools for the doctorally prepared nurse to evaluate, translate and integrate published research results into clinical practice. During the course, students will learn how to conceptualize clinical practice problems and transform them into answerable clinical research questions, how to search for the best clinical evidence, and how to assess clinical evidence using basic epidemiological, biostatistical and scientific principles. The course will culminate in a systematic review or meta-analysis of a body of research relevant to advanced practice nursing.

Distance-Based, Online DNP Program Overview

Georgetown University School of Nursing is a nationally recognized nursing school committed to advancing health equity and improving population health around the world. In keeping with this mission, our distance-based, online DNP programs focus on ethical leadership and prepare students to improve accessibility and quality of care for underserved populations.

Our DNP programs offer two entry points:

• BSN to DNP, designed for RNs with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Post-Master’s DNP, designed for APRNs or nurses with a master’s degree who are employed in advanced nursing roles

Distance-Based, Online BSN to DNP Program Overview

The BSN to DNP program is designed for registered nurses (RNs) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The BSN to DNP program is offered full time and part time. The full-time program can be completed in as few as 33 months and consists of eight 15-week terms. The part-time program consists of eleven 15-week terms. Both schedules include in-person experiences.

The number of program credits depends on the specialization. Students will complete both master’s- and doctoral-level coursework while preparing to pursue APRN certification in one of the following specializations:

• Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP): Gain the high-level experience to manage critical issues of patient safety and quality of care in acute and complex care settings.
• Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): Develop excellent skills in family practice and clinical care environments.
• Dual Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NM/WHNP): Implement care models that provide the highest quality care to individuals across the life span and to newborns.
• Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP): Advocate for individuals across the life span, providing person-focused care and improving care delivery throughout the health system.

Upon graduation, graduates are eligible to sit for board certification examinations in their specialty area to obtain licensure.

Distance-Based, Online Post-Master’s DNP Program Overview

The Post-Master’s DNP program is designed to build on the clinical experience of nurses in advanced nursing roles with master’s degrees. The Post-Master’s DNP program is offered in a part-time program of study, consisting of five 15-week terms, as well as DNP practice hours and on-campus executive sessions.

The 30-credit curriculum focuses on leadership at the systems level. Coursework is designed to encourage students to innovate, influence health care policy, and engage in the world in service to others, addressing topics such as:

• Implementing quality and safety initiatives to improve outcomes
• Integrating economic and financial principles in practice
• Evaluating ethical and legal challenges in health care

This program is intended for students who have an advanced nursing specialty or role and does not provide clinical preparation in an area of specialization. If you are interested in pursuing additional certifications, Georgetown University offers a distance-based, online Post-Graduate Certificate program with four APRN specialization options.

Distance-Based, Online DNP Program Curriculum

The Doctor of Nursing Practice distance-based, online DNP programs synthesize advanced leadership concepts and clinical expertise to equip nurses employed in advanced nursing roles with the foresight and experience to lead the advancement and implementation of change in health care.

These programs prepare students to improve health outcomes, implement systems-level change, and advocate for policies that improve population health, focusing on vulnerable communities.

Through live, distance-based online classes and interactive course content, students will acquire expertise in areas such as:

Doctoral scholarly project

Students will complete a scholarly project that translates evidence from original research and accelerates the adoption of best clinical and leadership practices.

By implementing and evaluating their DNP scholarly project, students will demonstrate practice-related scholarship, change leadership, and outcomes measurement. Though not required, many DNP students complete projects that support Georgetown University’s Jesuit values and address an existing need of underserved populations in the United States.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

• Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
• Family: No. 3 (tied)
• Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
• Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

• Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
• Epidemiology: No. 1
• Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
• Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
• Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

• Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
• Cell biology: No. 4
• Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
• Immunology: No. 5
• Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
• Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

• Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
• British literature: No. 10 (tie)
• American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

• African-American history: No. 3 (tie)

Pros and Cons of Getting a Doctorate Online

From heightened career advancement opportunities to increased salary potential, there are many reasons why people are choosing to earn doctorate degrees in 2024. Thanks to the proliferation of online doctorate programs, working professionals no longer have to press pause on their jobs to attend classes or complete coursework. Instead, tens of thousands of American professionals each year are rising to meet the growth in doctoral and professional-level occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), such occupations are projected to grow by 13 percent between 2016 and 2026, which is faster than the 7-percent average projection for all occupations.

When a trusted accrediting body gives a program its stamp of approval, that means it meets high educational standards.  

There are several accrediting bodies in the United States, many of which focus on certain types of degree programs or regions of the country. AACSB, for example, accredits business schools. The scope of accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) includes distance and correspondence education for eleven states and Latin America. 

Time Management  

Personalized learning, asynchronous instruction and virtual coursework mean that online doctoral students must create schedules and establish the structure for working toward their degrees. U.S. News Releases 2024 Best Graduate Programs Rankings

To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released the 2024 rankings for multiple graduate fields.

Depending on the job or field, earning a graduate degree may lead to higher earnings, career advancement and specialized skill development.

But with several types of degrees and hundreds of graduate schools, it can be difficult to narrow down the options. To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released its 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings today. They evaluate business, education, fine arts, health, law, library studies, nursing, public affairs, science, and social sciences and humanities graduate programs. Medical school and engineering rankings are not being released at this time.

A notable methodology change includes a new salary indicator based on profession in the business rankings.

Additionally, for the first time in four years, there are new rankings for a blend of doctoral and master's programs in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, nurse midwifery and speech-language pathology. Graduate programs in nurse anesthesia and social work are also ranked for the first time since 2016 and 2022, respectively. Those and other specialty rankings are based on reputation ratings from scholars at other surveyed schools.

Read each program's specific methodology for the most detailed explanations of all the changes. The rankings are one source of information among many that prospective college students can use to inform their college decision. Below is a summary of the top-ranked schools in four major graduate program areas:

Best Law Schools

Best business schools, best nursing schools, best education schools.

Among the top 10 law schools . Yale Law School in Connecticut and California-based  Stanford Law School shared the top spot again. The  University of Chicago Law School in Illinois maintained its No. 3 rank, followed by a four-way tie at No. 4: Duke University School of Law in North Carolina, Harvard Law School in Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law .

Columbia Law School in New York ranked No. 8 again, while there was a three-way tie for No. 9: New York University School of Law , Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law in Illinois and the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor Law School .

Looking beyond the top 10, multiple law schools moved up in the rankings. William & Mary Law School in Virginia, for instance, jumped nine spots from a tie at No. 45 to a five-way tie at No. 36.

U.S. News also ranked 13 law specialties: business/corporate, clinical training, constitutional, contracts/commercial, criminal, dispute resolution, environmental, health care, intellectual property, international, legal writing, tax and trial advocacy. Meanwhile, in the  part-time law school rankings – which consists of law schools with at least 20 part-time students enrolled in fall 2022 and fall 2023 – the top three stayed the same. The  Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., is once again at the top while D.C.-based  George Washington University Law School , now No. 3, switched places with the  Fordham University School of Law in New York City, which claimed second place.

Previously ranked at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Stanford Graduate School of Business took the top spot in this year's full-time MBA program rankings . Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business moved down from their previous places in the top two to tie at No. 3.

While the top 10 mostly consists of the same schools as last year, both the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business joined those ranks this year. UC Berkeley rose from a three-way tie at No. 11 to a three-way tie at No. 7, while UVA moved up four spots from No. 14 to a tie at No. 10.

Farther down the full-time MBA rankings, there were some big changes. For example, Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business soared 39 spots from a tie at No. 86 to a tie at No. 47.

Meanwhile, the very top of the part-time MBA rankings looks similar to last year, with the same schools in the top 5: UChicago, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, NYU's Leonard N. Stern School of Business and the Anderson School of Management at the University of California—Los Angeles. But UChicago took the No. 1 spot from UC Berkeley this year.

Moving up from No. 2, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Maryland tied with Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in Georgia to claim the top spot in this year's nursing master's program rankings. Duke University School of Nursing in North Carolina climbed up by one to claim the third spot.

Johns Hopkins ranked No. 1, as it did last year, in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program rankings. George Mason University School of Nursing in Virginia – which reported more graduates and resources per faculty – soared from a four-way tie at No. 39 to take the No. 2 spot. Duke tied with the University of Washington School of Nursing to round out the top three.

Duke also ranked No. 1 in all of the ranked nursing master's nursing practice specialties, including administration, family, both acute and primary care adult gerontology, and mental health.

Once again, Teachers College, Columbia University in New York was No. 1 in the graduate education schools rankings. This year, however, it tied with the University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Education , which climbed two spots.

The University of Michigan—Ann Arbor's School of Education dropped from the top position to tie with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies at No. 3. UCLA was previously tied at No. 7.

U.S. News also ranks nine education specialties, with the College of Education at Michigan State University claiming the top spot in the following categories: curriculum and instruction, educational administration, elementary teacher education, higher education administration and secondary teacher education.

How to Become a Nurse Practitioner in Pennsylvania

The United States is on the verge of a healthcare staffing crisis —and the state of Pennsylvania is no exception. According to research from the US Department of Health and Human Services, more than 580,000 Pennsylvania residents live in areas categorized as “health professional shortage areas.” People who live in these areas face an acute shortage of access to primary care physicians, making it difficult for them to get to a doctor when they need one.

This is a problem that can’t go unaddressed. The individuals most affected are typically members of communities that are already underserved. Lacking access to regular preventative care across their lifespan can decrease the length and quality of their lives. You could fill a binder with the research that shows that access to primary care is strongly linked to better healthcare outcomes .

The solution, according to some, is nurse practitioners (NPs). NPs can perform many of the same functions as primary care physicians, including ordering diagnostic tests and developing treatment plans. Nurse practitioners have a shorter educational pathway to be able to practice, take on less educational debt, and are more likely than doctors to practice in the rural and lower-class areas where primary care shortages are felt most acutely.

Health care industry insiders are encouraging tomorrow’s nurse practitioners to get in the primary care provider pipeline by enrolling now in NP schools in PA. Nurse practitioners are expected to be in high demand for the foreseeable future, making the NP job outlook in Pennsylvania better than it’s ever been.

Let’s take a look at what nurse practitioners do, who is a good candidate to become a nurse practitioner in Pennsylvania, and how long it takes to earn an NP license.

What does a nurse practitioner do?

In Pennsylvania, NPs are recognized as primary care providers. Certified nurse practitioners with Pennsylvania license are authorized to:

• Obtain medical histories
• Perform physical examinations
• Prescribe medications
• Order and perform diagnostic tests
• Diagnose medical conditions
• Develop and implement treatment plans
• Answer questions and educate patients and their family members

NPs in Pennsylvania focus their practice in one of six designated population categories, including family medicine, neonatal nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric/mental health nursing, adult/gerontology, and women’s health.

Nurse practitioners can work in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, private practices, adult care facilities, school and college health clinics, hospices, VA facilities, and more. Physician’s offices, medical and surgical hospitals, and outpatient care centers are currently the three top employers for NPs.

It’s worth noting that NPs in Pennsylvania do not yet have what’s known as “full scope of practice.” This just means that NPs need to maintain an ongoing relationship with a licensed physician who can collaborate with the NP when needed and is required for prescriptive authority. NPs in 27 other US states currently have the full scope of practice, and it is expected that many other states will soon follow suit.

How do you become a nurse practitioner in PA?

NPs in Pennsylvania are regulated by the state’s Board of Nursing. To be granted licensure by the Board, you must first meet the criteria to practice as a registered nurse (RN). Next, you must complete an accredited, graduate-level program that includes clinical rotation hours and additional training in the demographic of your choice (family practice, mental health, and gerontology are popular options). Finally, you must take and pass a national certification exam that demonstrates your competency with your chosen demographic.

Nurse practitioners who wish to practice in Pennsylvania must submit the following to apply for licensure:

• A Master’s degree in their chosen NP specialty
• Passing score on a Board-approved national certification  exam, such as the family nurse practitioner (FNP) exam
• 3 hours of Board-approved education on child abuse recognition and reporting
• Registration fee

The time it takes to complete this process will vary according to your current level of education. Candidates who already have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree can earn their Master’s degree in two years. The exact length of that secondary degree will depend on the program option that they choose and the time it takes to complete their clinical hour requirements.

Becoming a nurse practitioner in PA is fairly straightforward, but not all educational pathways are equal. Those who are interested in this career should look carefully at the NP programs in PA. Stronger programs will be able to demonstrate high rates of passage on licensure exams as well as robust statistics on post-graduate employment rates. You’ll find that some schools, like Wilkes, have a reputation for excellence, having been accredited by the CCNE for decades.

Are NPs in demand in Pennsylvania?

Statistics paint an optimistic picture of the job outlook for NPs in PA. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that there will be 118,600 new nurse practitioner jobs within the next ten years; a growth rate of 45%. That means that NPs are among the fastest-growing of any profession.

Demand for primary care providers continues to go up, and as mentioned above, there are currently not enough physicians to fulfill the needs of a growing population. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that the shortage of primary care physicians may reach 48,000 by 2034. Nurse practitioners are well-positioned to fill the gap between the care that patients need and how many providers are available.

The salary expectation for nurse practitioners across the United States continues to rise. As of 2023, the median annual salary for nurse practitioners was $121,610, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Pennsylvania specifically, the mean annual wage for NPs is $120,550. That is significantly more than the median household income in PA , which was $67,587 as of 2021. The NY/NJ/PA metropolitan area employs more nurse practitioners than any other metropolitan zone in the US. This area also pays their NPs some of the highest salaries.

Home health care services, psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals, and vocational rehab services are some of the top-paying industries for NPs, and demand for all three is projected to keep rising in Pennsylvania due to the unique demographic needs of the state. Primary care providers who can see patients across the lifespan, such as family nurse practitioners, can expect a high yield on their educational investment.

That’s because the growth rate of the 65 and older population in PA is twenty times higher than the growth rate of the general population. Among the 50 states, Pennsylvania is ranked fifth for the size of its older adult population, with 3.4 million seniors calling the state home. Pennsylvanians with mobility impairments and cognitive challenges represent 11% of residents. The state currently spends 37% of its healthcare spending on older adults and individuals with disabilities, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

How fast can you become an NP in PA?

If you have already earned your BSN degree, you can become a nurse practitioner in as little as two years. Out-of-State Students

Our online nursing degree programs prepare graduates to take the national board certification exam appropriate to their degree or chosen NP concentration. ABSN graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Please see our full list of state authorizations to determine whether our program fulfills requirements for licensure in your home state. For the online ABSN program, your primary state of residence must be PA. Wilkes University will not be able to place any students who move to an unauthorized state before or during the program and this may impact your ability to continue with the program.

Primary State of Residence (PSOR)

Your PSOR is the state in which you declare as your primary residence for legal purposes. Sources used to verify your PSOR may include driver's license, federal income tax return, or voter registration. Only one state can be identified as the primary state of legal residence.

To proceed with the Associate Degree in Nursing (R.N.) to M.S.N. program, you are required to have an associate’s degree in nursing and hold a current unencumbered R.N. license.
