The University of Padua supports the principles of open access to theses and dissertations.
Open access to the thesis means that anyone anywhere can see, read and cite the work within a short time of confirmation of the award, while the research is still fresh and new.
A copy of the thesis is deposited (mandatory in the case of PhD thesis, at the author's choice for other types of dissertation) into Padua Thesis & Dissertation Archive or into Padua Research Archive (IRIS), University of Padua's institutional repositories , with a procedure integrated into the academic degree application.
The thesis' copyright belongs to the author, and it is also retained by the author. Open Access publication and dissemination of University of Padua's theses takes place through an open, non-exclusive publishing licence (ITA) , and for doctoral theses through a similar publication agreement.
Anyone can search and browse the theses archived in the institutional repositories and, when not otherwise indicated, view and download contents.
Bachelor's and Master's thesis
Bachelor's thesis at Padua, made publicly available by choice of the author, are searchable and openly available in Padua Thesis and Dissertation Archive .
The repository also contains other types of theses deposited at the authors' choice. It also includes information (metadata) relating to theses not published online in full text (restricted access).
Search for theses on Padua Thesis and Dissertation Archive
Explore and search theses by type of academic degree or by sorting at Padua Thesis and Dissertation Archive – Communities and Collections .
If you would like more information about thesis depositing, see also the info page on Padua Thesis and Dissertation Archive .
PhD thesis and dissertation
Padua Research Archive (IRIS) is the institutional repository of the University of Padua and as such carries the assurance that the work has been awarded the degree claimed and the document represents the Version of Record (VoR). It also allows the legal deposit of the PhD thesis at the national central libraries, as required by current legislation in Italy.
All PhD theses at Padua are deposited in the institutional repository to ensure that are recorded, indexed, disseminated and preserved alongside the research publications of the University of Padua's staff and PhD students.

How to write a thesis
Consult our recommendations and guidelines on how to design, organize and write the final thesis.
1.1. Preliminary stages
Once the thesis topic has been agreed on and the stages of writing the thesis have been established with the supervisor, you should follow several preliminary steps prior to drafting the paper:
- Do some initial bibliographic research using catalogs, databases (in Italian), and specialized periodicals available in the Library;
- Plan out the organization and exposition of the thesis through the drafting of a preliminary outline that is supported by a brief description of each chapter, which will clarify the project plan for both the supervisor and the candidate.
The goals of a paper such as the thesis are as follows:
- Clarity: the candidate’s arguments should be expressed in linear phrases that are not redundant. Sentences should be kept as short as possible;
- Completeness: all the information needed to understand the points of view expressed should be carefully presented.
The thesis is divided into sections, which are ordered systematically.
2.1. The title page
The title page is the first page of the thesis and it contains essential information about the thesis, such as:
- the institution
- the department
- the thesis material
- the thesis title
- the candidate’s name
- the supervisor’s name (and the co-supervisor’s name, where applicable)
- the academic year
For the Luiss thesis, the Student Office has prepared Final Paper first page template to use:
- Bachelor’s degree programs
- Master’s degree programs
- Single-cycle master’s degree program in Law
- Four-year degree programs
2.2. Table of contents
The table of contents indicates the titles and page numbers at the beginning of the sections that make up the text of the thesis (chapters, sections, subsections, bibliography, etc.) and provides a snapshot of the content and structure of the paper. It has an organizational purpose with regard to the work being prepared and undergoes modification as the research on the thesis evolves and expands.
2.3. The introduction
The introduction, which is written after drafting the rest of the thesis, explains the choice of topic, the hypotheses that the candidate intends to prove and the tools used.
2.4. Chapters, sections and sub-sections
The body of the paper is subdivided into chapters, sections and subsections, numbered sequentially to facilitate internal references.
2.5. The conclusion
The last chapter of the thesis, it is presented as a response to the hypotheses presented in the introduction and comments on the results of the research.
2.6. Footnotes
Footnotes can be used for various purposes:
- to cite the sources of the topics discussed;
- to contain further information or digressions;
- to refer to other sections of the text.
Footnotes are at the bottom of the page and use a smaller font than the rest of the text. The numbers corresponding to the notes precede any punctuation marks, except in the case of quotes.
2.7. The bibliography
The bibliography lists and orders works consulted during the writing of the paper and the citations contained within it, and it contains the information needed to identify and find these documents. Given that there is no single citation style, several variations can be used, as long as the selected style is used consistently throughout the thesis.
Distinguishing different types of documents is essential:
- monographs;
- chapters of monographs;
- periodical articles;
- gray literature (material produced by an entity but not published by an editor);
- documents on the web.
Each of these is cited in a different way: for example, while the place of publication and the publisher must be indicated for monographs, this data can be omitted for periodicals because normally the name of the periodical is sufficient.
For further information on how to format bibliographic citations and use the Reference Management Systems, consult the guidelines in the dedicated guide: "How to prepare a bibliography".
3.1. Graphic standards
In order to reduce paper and ink consumption, in case of printing (however not required) it is recommended to follow the Guidelines for sustainable printing of theses and papers .
The same indications can, not necessarily, be used to format the PDF file sent to the Student Office via digital upload. For administrative questions, contact the Student Office .
3.2. Foreign words and emphasis
The rules state that foreign words commonly used in Italian should be written normally; in other cases they should be italicized, except for proper names, official names of institutions, or laws, which are not considered to be foreign words. Latin terms are considered foreign and should be italicized. Italics are also used to draw attention to specific words or passages in the text, while double quotes are used for idiomatic expressions.
3.3. Figures and tables
The source and the date the information was updated must always be provided for graphs and tables.
3.4. Abbreviations
Abbreviations can be used in the body of the thesis, as well as in the notes and bibliography.
Abbreviations may be editorial:
- Article = art.
- Chapter = ch.
- Cited = cit.
- Compare = cf.
- Et cetera = etc.
- Edition = ed.
- Example = e.g.
- Figure = fig.
- Ibidem = ibid.
- Number = no.
- Work cited = op.cit.
- Pages = pp.
- And the following = et seq.
- No date = n.d.
- No place = n.p.
- Translated by/translation/translator = trans.
- Volume = vol.
- Volumes = vols.
Or related to the publications cited:
- J. = Journal
- Rev. = Revue, Review
- Riv. = Rivista
- Z., Zeit. = Zeitschrift Zh.
- Zhur. = Zhurnal
- Bull. = Bulletin
- Proc. = Proceedings
- Ann. = Annals,Annual
- Hist. = History, Historical
- Soc. = Society, Social
- Am., Amer. = America, American
- Can., Canad. = Canada, Canadian
- Brit. = British
- It., Ital. = Italy, Italian
A summary table of all abbreviations used in the paper should be included if they are used throughout the thesis.
4.1. How do I get started?

Theses-Final Papers guidance
The Master's thesis in Law represents a milestone in your educational journey, a step that likely leads to the culmination of your university experience.
Through the development of the thesis, in fact, you have the opportunity to demonstrate not only personal but also intellectual maturity, independence of judgment, originality, and the ability to apply to a specific context the preparation received during your course of study.
The starting point is the identification of the research topic, with reference to which one (or more than one) specific research question must then be developed. You may also draw on work (internship) or study experience in Italy or abroad.
In the thesis you must demonstrate mastery of the methodological foundations of the relevant disciplinary area and carry out thorough research and analysis of the relevant bibliography, developing, in an original way, theoretical aspects or applied aspects.
In the following link you can find the subject areas of interest of the faculty members of the Department of Legal Studies. For further details you can refer to the CLMG Thesis Implementation Guide and/or contact Prof. Stefania Boffano ( [email protected] ).

Data Science Masters Programme - Guidelines for Master Thesis
The master thesis (24 CFU) requires the development of an original data science project which must be relevant for industry and/or research. The master thesis project must involve some of the following activities: i) collection, organization and analysis of real-world data; ii) software development for data science applications; iii) modelling and investigation of real-world data science problems; iv) data driven innovation in business, production or services.
Students can perform their master thesis projects either at Sapienza under the supervision of an instructor of the course or in external institutions such as companies, public bodies, public or private research institutes, foreign or Italian universities.
Master thesis projects performed in an external institution will be supervised both from a professor of the data science course ( Prof. Ioannis Chatzigiannakis < [email protected] > ) and from an external tutor that will be appointed by the Data Science Masters Programme Council ( MORE INFO... )
The students will be assigned master thesis projects that can be completed in about 4/6 months of full time work. The work done by the student must be reported in a thesis written in English that can also include on a digital support the software and the data produced during the project.
The publication of the results produced by the student during the master thesis cannot be restricted by the external institution that hosted the master thesis project. However, the external institution can retain the right to not include in the thesis or in publications extracted from the thesis any internal data or information made available for the project under a non disclosure agreement signed with the student.
The final exam will include the oral presentation in English of the project and the defence of it. The student will illustrate during the final exam the originality and the importance of the results obtained in the master thesis and the data science methodologies he mastered for their achievement.
The criteria for grading master thesis have been discussed and approved by the Data Science Masters Programme Council of February 3rd, 2016:
Base grade = weighted average x 11/3
1 bonus point for graduation within the legal duration of the course (2 years for full time students, 3 or more years for part-time students)
1 bonus point for at least three “30 cum laude”
At most 7 points for the thesis project and the final exam.
6 and 7 points are reserved for master thesis which will contain practical results with strong impact on industry or research results which will be reported in publications.
Anti-plagiarism policy: The internal and the external supervisor are required to declare under his/her own responsibility that all the novel results presented in the thesis have not been copied from other sources.

How to request the thesis assignment
The final exam of the Master’s degree courses requires the presentation of a thesis with original characteristics.
The thesis is an intellectual work of a creative nature, with scientific content, protected by copyright law (Law 633/19411).
In order to request the thesis assignment, the student must submit the request at the beginning of the last semester (II semester of the II year), however not later than this term, and in any case, indicatively, when the number of remaining exams is 3. Then the student must fill out correctly the "thesis assignment" form , specifying any remaining exams.
The scanned form, filled in all its parts and signed by the supervisor, who will be the guarantor of the work and will follow the student in the preparation of the thesis, must be sent in PDF format to the following e-mail address [email protected] .
The student agrees on the topic with a teacher of a scientific-disciplinary sector present in the student’s academic career among the basic, characterizing and related or integrative activities. The student agrees the topic of the thesis with a supervisor, who follows its development, which must be in a scientific-disciplinary sector among those present in the student’s academic career.
The supervisor must be one of the teachers belonging to the Board of the MS in Nanotechnology Engineering. At this link organization/academic-board , a list of all members of the Board is available.
There is no precise deadline for the submission of the form, but it is recommended to submit it as soon as the internship for the preparation of the final thesis has started.
Thesis development
The work of the thesis preparation can be carried out partially or totally in Italy or abroad at foreign or EU institutions, bodies, companies or at supranational or international institutions of an adequate scientific and cultural level. The work of the thesis usually requires a period of time between 3 and 6 months.
Thesis carried out abroad
In case of thesis carried out abroad, with reference to the Regulations for students' mobility and recognition of periods of study and training carried out abroad adopted by this University, the recognition on the official certifications of CFUs corresponding to the thesis work carried out abroad is foreseen; the recognition is possible up to 80% of the CFUs foreseen for the final thesis exam. In the specific case of the LM of Nanotechnology Engineering (17 CFUs assigned to the final exam) this means a maximum of 13 certifiable CFUs according to the following scheme, approved by the Area Council:
- minimum certifiable period: 2 months corresponding to 9 CFU
- maximum certifiable period: 3 months corresponding to 13 CFU
Thesis writing guidelines
After the assignment of the thesis topic, the student will have to search, evaluate and study the existing literature on the topic. For this purpose, he/she will have to carry out a bibliographic research, based on the consultation of texts and scientific journals available in the library, as well as on the consultation of dedicated websites.
In the paper the sources used must be made explicit, according to the scientific conventions of the specific field of study as regards the recognition of the work of others.
The supervisor will provide support in this sense, providing one or more starting points from which going back to further sources. At the end of the bibliographical analysis phase, when the candidate has a clear idea of the research theme, he/she will have to write:
- a (provisional) work index;
- a bibliography with the texts and journals consulted. Then he/she will have to submit it to the supervisor who, if necessary, will advise him/her on appropriate additions and modifications and will give consent to the beginning of the work writing.
The student can then proceed to the writing of the thesis, under the surveillance of the supervisor who will guide the work by providing further information for the continuation of activities until the final version of the work.

Master Thesis
Preparation for the Master thesis in Medical Biotechnology requires at least one year of experimental research. Students can conduct the necessary research activities in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology (DMMBM), in other Departments of the University Federico II, or in other research centers and companies (public or private), pending the approval of the Thesis and Internship Committee.
The Thesis Advisor in Medical Biotechnology is the Faculty or the Scientist who supervises and is responsible for the student’s research. If this person is not affiliated with the Master or the DMMBM, the Thesis and Internship Committee will nominate an Internal Advisor among the Masteri Faculty. Students are expected to contact potential advisors based on their academic and professional interests as soon as possible to discuss research content, timeline and modalities.
Advisors and Internal Advisors must complete and sign the form "Assegnazione Tesi" (see Modulistica in this site). Students will submit the signed and completed form to Ms. Angela Canzio, the Thesis and Internship Committee secretary . To certify the timely submission of this form, students must sign a submission registry available in the administrative office.
A list of approved thesis assignments will appear on this website each month.
The official start date of thesis activities corresponds to the day the student submitted the Thesis Request Form to the Master Thesis and Internship Activities Committee.
It is mandatory that the thesis research take place over at least one academic year. However, in rare and extraordinary circumstances, the Thesis and Internship Committee may allow for an exception. Students enrolling in or after the academic year 2014-2015 must submit the appropriate forms for Internship and Thesis Activities by April 30.
Thesis preparation
The experimental work performed by the student must be illustrated in the text and in the presentation. In the case of collaborations, the student's role in the work must be clearly indicated.
Students are required to strictly follow the guidelines ( Formato tesi ) for the format of the thesis and to use the first page model (see: Frontespizio della Tesi at the link Modulistica. )
The written thesis, in its final form, must be submitted to the Students Secretary Office 15 days before the Graduation date.
The .pdf file of the thesis must be sent by e-mail 15 days before the graduation date to prof.ssa Paola Costanzo Vincenzo De Simone (paola.costanzo@ unina.it ), deputy of the Thesis and Internship Committee. If the Student wishes to graduate cum laude (a possibility reserved for students having a graduation starting mark greater than or equal to 102,66, see below Graduation Grades), in the same e-mail , he/she must ask for a member of the Graduation Committe who challenges the graduate's dissertation (controrelatore).
Thesis Defense and Graduation Committee.
The thesis defense consists in a computer-aided presentation of the results obtained by the graduating student. It is allowed to present results obtained by the lab, but the contribution of the graduating student must be clearly evident. The presentation must not exceed 15 min (better 12-13), in order to allow the Committee to ask several questions. The presentation must be divided in three parts: 1) introduction (the scientific problem, the state of the art in the field and the aim of the work); 2) results (where the single results are described and explained); 3) general discussion (outcome of the results, possible conclusions and future prospectives of the work).
All Faculty thesis advisors, Internal advisors or advisors members of the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology, will form the Graduation Committee for the relative session. Thesis advisors from Research Centers or other Universities will be invited to participate to the Graduation session.
Graduation Grades
The final graduation mark is assigned by the Thesis Committee. The mark is mostly determined by the score obtained by the graduating student at the exams. A 110-point scale is used: for excellent results, the Lode "praise" is added to the maximum grade. First, the weighted average of the exams score is determined (the average corrected for the credit weight of each single exam). Next, this value is multiplied by 11 and divided by 3. This is the graduation starting mark. To the students completing the Master in the 2-years time , the Committee may assign additional points to the graduation starting mark:
a) 1 point if the weighted average of the exams is greater than or equal to 27/30;
b) 1 point if all the exams of the I semester of the I year have been passed within the I semester;
c) 1 point if all the exams of the II semester of the I year have been passed within the II semester;
d) 2 points if all the exams of the I year have been passed within the September exam session of the I year.
(note that the a) additional point may be added to the others, but the b) and C) points cannot be added to d).
At this stage, the obtained number is rounded up or down ( i.e. , 88,500 is rounded to 89 while 88.499 to 88).
The Graduation Committee, evaluating the thesis defense, may add up to 10 points to the Graduation starting mark.
The Laude may be proposed by the Advisor only for student having a graduation starting mark greater than or equal to 102,66.
The Committee may assign a Special Distinction to graduating students having a weighted average of exams score greater than or equal to 29/30.

Writing a Master Thesis in Milan
- Management and Engineering in Technology, Innovation, Marketing and Entrepreneurship M.Sc.
- Italy, Milan
- Politecnico di Milano
- March – June 2022
I am happy to share some insights on my time abroad in Milan, Italy. During that time, I conducted research on my Master thesis at Politecnico di Milano. I am solely responsible for the content of this report.
Preparation Prior to applying for the Erasmus+ Internship grant, there are several steps to be taken independently from the country or city you will be studying at. In my case, didn’t do an internship but wrote my Master thesis at a foreign university. Therefore, preparation included looking for interesting institutes or researchers across Europe, who have expertise in a specific field you are interested in writing a thesis in. A decent approach is to search for relating papers or studies, for example. After you have set eyes on a specific institute, I suggest writing a short research proposal. This includes 5-10 pages where you are explaining your motivation and your expertise regarding the specific research topic. Additionally, I suggest you write a short introduction to a possible topic that seems suitable as Bachelor/ Master thesis. Once you are in contact with respective researchers at the institute you applied for, you can start looking for an internal supervisor at RWTH. The overall topic of the thesis can then be “finetuned” between the three parties. From my expertise (I also wrote my Bachelor thesis externally), it shouldn’t be a big problem to find an internal supervisor as long as the external institution seems interesting! The actual application for the Erasmus grant is quite self-explanatory and convenient, so no need to further explain it in this report.
There is not much to consider before moving to Milan, as it quite easy to move around the European Union. However, when living in Italy you need to register for an Italian tax number. Just contact the Consulate of Italy in Cologne before the movement and they will send you a respective number.
Living in Milan Everyone who has been to Italy before, knows exactly the Italian kind of vibe. And even though Milan is in the northern part of Italy, the so-called business part, you can truly feel this Italian spirit in Milan. Enjoy the food and all the Aperitivos you will have during your time abroad! Milan truly offers a lot of great restaurants, bars, and cafes. But don’t fall into the tourist trap and rely too heavily on websites like TripAdvisor and Co. Rather try out Pizzeria Assaje for an amazing pizza! Because by doing so, it can easily get quite expensive without the food actually being delicious. Thus, I suggest walking around the streets and absorbing the atmosphere. I am quite certain that you will quickly find a great place to eat. Especially, the district Citta Studi where the PoliMi is located offers great localities. But the great part about Milan is its great variety of districts that all offer other specialties. Navigli, for example, is famous for its many bars and the two canals that are filled with tourists during the day. In contrast, Porta Venezia is known as gay district and also offers great bars including a lot of clubs, whereas Moscova is rather a more expensive area where the wordl famous Duomo is also located. Other than that, almost every day you can find a lot of people gathering on public places. The infamous, Piazza Leonardo right in the center of PoliMi offers a great atmosphere with hundreds of students gathering every weekend and some DJs playing some music. Milan as the creative and fashion capital of Italy offers lots of intellectual places. Fondazione di Prada or Pinacoteca di Brera displays great art and amazing architecture. Many museums offer student discounts. Pinacoteca di Brera, for example, just costs 2€ per person.

Other than that, the San Siro stadium accommodates both Milanese teams AC Milan as well as Inter Milan. So, plenty of possibilities of embracing the incredible atmosphere in this stadium while watching first class football.
In summer, Italians are usually driving to the seaside themselves. You should do the same because Milan is quite empty in August! On a side note, as you are not included in any official welcome days by the host university, I suggest writing the RWTH authorities and asking them to share your contact details with the other moving students from RWTH. In this way, you already get to know some people before going abroad and can discuss common difficulties.
Accommodation/ Transport For accommodation I recommend using Housing Anywhere. In Italy it is common that you don’t get to know your flat mates before you haven’t actually rent a room in the respective apartment. In my opinion that quite weird, but it is what it is. Just don’t be surprised! Another surprise can come with the prices for flats in the central districts. However, I suggest embracing the opportunity and really getting the most out of your time abroad by staying in the cool districts like Citta Studi, Porta Venezia, Washington, Moscova, Navigli. Otherwise, you might have to drive quite long distances, specifically because the metro stops working after 1pm and you have to use buses instead. Regarding the transportation, get yourself a monthly metro ticket. You just need a picture and then can file for the ticket at one of the ATM offices in the metro stations. The ticket costs 22€ per month and also allows you to take buses. Riding a bike in Milan is no fun because of cobblestones, bad streets, etc., so better use the public transport. Safety is not an issue in the public transport. Just be careful when taking the night buses, but no more caution is needed than anywhere else in big European cities.

Around Milan
Milan is located in a great region. You are close to the mountains, as well as close to Lago di Como, Lago di Maggiore, and Lago di Garda. Enjoy some sun and take a dip at these destinations, it’s just an hour away from Milan by train!
Lecco, for example, is easy to reach and offers a cute little town at the stunning beginning of Lago di Como. I also went to Venice for two days, which is also quite close (3 hours by train).

Additionally, Turin is close by and is definitely worth a visit! An absolutely underrated visit is the city of Bergamo. Especially the old town of Bergamo is beautiful and definitely worth a visit.
I hope this report gives you a good first impression of your time abroad. I wish you a wonderful time in Milan!
