My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. As my paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young, I only remember a few memories of him. One thing I surely remember is he used to brush his teeth twice daily without fail. I adopted this habit and ever since I have been doing the same.

My maternal grandparents have been my true systems of support. I am lucky enough to have grown up around such inspirational people. My grandfather was a principal of a college, so he always emphasized the importance of education . He helped us with our homework when my parents were not available. I spent my vacations at their place as I enjoyed living with them.

Similarly, my grandparents always embraced me with open arms. They used to wait for every holiday for our arrival. My grandmother made delicious pickles and meals which we relished greatly. She taught me a few recipes too and tips and tricks that are very useful even today. I simply adore my grandparents for instilling good values in me and my parents and for giving us a safe space to grow up in.

They are the sort of individuals with whom you can discuss anything, even sensitive or confidential matters. In addition to being a buddy, my grandfather is also the finest teacher I have ever had. My grandparents are adorable, kind, wise, and understanding. They have always taught me to respect elders and taught me how to live an honourable and prosperous life. I don't have to worry about anything because they are helping me make decisions. My grandparents are 70 and 73 years old, respectively. They still appear to be young in heart and do not appear to be as elderly as other persons their age. I feel really fortunate to have such kind, endearing, and special grandparents. Every day I learn a lot of new things. They serve as my inspirations. Therefore, they are older now, they still serve as the foundation of our family. I respect my grandparents because they instilled moral principles and ideals that have aided me in everyday life. They both take great care of their physical and mental well-being. They constantly practise yoga and meditation to stay active at their age. They have always cared about my health and urged me to live a healthy lifestyle.

My grandparents' personalities are fascinating. They were always an important role model for me. Throughout the day, they are energetic and active constantly. Everyone in our family adores them. They have a limitless affection for us. They frequently interact with others with a lot of love and caring.

My grandfather regularly takes early walks. He speedily crosses our neighbourhood park every morning as soon as he gets out of bed. He returns and settles down to read one of his favourite books on the lawn. My grandparents share their tales with me. I can never feel down when they are around. My grandparents were the ones who first instilled in me the value of comedy. They both significantly contributed to my character development, and I am grateful to have them in my life.

I seemed to have great luck growing up at my grandparents' home. Since I was a child, our family has lived with my grandparents. I only have a few recollections of my paternal grandpa because he went away when I was a very little child. He used to clean his teeth twice a day without fail. I developed this practice and have continued to do so ever since.

My real support systems have been my maternal grandparents. I am privileged to have been raised by such wonderful people. My grandpa constantly emphasised the value of education because he was a college principal. When my parents were away, he helped us with my homework.

Similarly, my grandparents greeted me with open arms every time me and family visited them. Every holiday, they used to wait for us to come. We loved the delicious dinners and pickles that my grandma cooked. She also taught me several recipes and helpful advice that I still use today. I appreciate my grandparents for teaching moral principles to both my parents and me and for providing a secure environment for us to grow up in.

I learned the fundamental principles of life from my grandparents. They have taught me the true meaning of goodness, love, and affection. They boosted my willpower and helped me become a better person. They are incredibly dear to me. And he has improved our life in so many different ways. I appreciate having them near me.

I never needed to form friends because my grandparents were my best friends. Thus I never felt the urge to do so. They protected me from my parents whenever I did something wrong. Together, we played many indoor and outdoor activities like cricket, Ludo, and hide and seek.

My granddad and I ride bikes around the neighbourhood and to the park. When I'm bored, he is always willing to play with me. He sings songs and gives me general advice. My grandmother is a positive person. She always smiles and is ready to make what I desire. I enjoy making jokes with them and getting pampered by them. My grandmother taught me how to behave appropriately and looked after me when I was ill. My grandfather buys all the foodstuffs I like.

When you finally turn off your throwback binge of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and begin the brainstorming stage of the process, make sure to do these things to write an effective essay about your grandmama or papa:

Your essay should first and foremost be about you.

Make sure your grandma doesn’t take over your college essay. An anecdote about an experience or conversation you had with a grandparent can be a great way to illustrate something about your background or values, but your essay should always feature you as the main character. If you need help coming up with a specific story, go mining for mementos like photos and birthday cards. Or better yet, have a conversation if you can! Whether it’s a phone call, an afterschool visit, or a letter of everything you would want to say to a grandparent who has passed away, speaking directly to that person will help you uncover cherished memories that you both participated in. The more specific and detailed your story, the easier it will be to tell it from your perspective. After all, your granny doesn’t need to get accepted to college – and she is probably too old for ramen dinners night after night anyway.

Write about their impact on you…

Once you have homed in on a memory or experience, think about what you learned from it. What does it say about you? Does/did knowing your grandparent make you more understanding? Kind? Curious? Concrete details and bits of dialogue are the final key ingredient to any college essay — but especially the kind built around a relationship. Don’t just say that your grandparent makes you more adventurous – tell admissions about the time you risked all of your team’s points in Jeopardy because you were confident in your answer and remembered your grandpa telling you that you have to take great risks to see great rewards. Show admissions how you’ve applied what your grandparent taught you to your everyday life.

If your essay reads as a eulogy to your grandparent, think about how you can turn the essay around. One way to do this would be to try to only include your grandparent in the first and last paragraph of your essay: introduce your relationship and its’ impact, tell your own story, and bring that story full circle back to your grandparent. Why i love my grandparents, i am so grateful to have them in my life..

Sometimes, I find myself feeling like I am not giving enough thanks to the people in my life who go above and beyond to make life better for me. I feel ungrateful sometimes because I feel like I am often forgetting to thank people for doing things for me that they most certainly do not have to do. When I think about all of the people in my life who do so many things for me without thinking twice about it, there are two people who stick out the most. Those two people are my grandparents, and I can not begin to thank them enough for everything that they have done for me.

My grandparents have been giving me things and helping me with things since I was born. So many times, I would leave their house feeling like I did not thank them enough. I can not even begin to count the number of times that I left their house with several grocery bags filled with food.

One of the biggest gifts that I have gotten from my grandparents was my car! My grandma needed a new car to meet her physical needs, and instead of trying to sell the car, she offered it to me. I am so grateful for this because without her, I do not believe I would be driving today. Even before she gave me the car, my grandpa would invite me over to give me driving lessons. Without him helping me learn to drive, I would not even be able to use that car. Even now, they help me with my car. One example is when my grandpa called me and asked me to come to his house. I did not ask questions. I, simply, followed his directions. When I got to his house, he had buckets of soap and water. He wanted me to come up to check my oil and wash my car! It was so unexpected, but he wanted to make sure my car was up to par with what it needed to be. There was also a time when I light came on in my car when I was at school, and I didn’t know what to do. He came up that weekend, and drove around for half an hour until he could find the right fluids to fix my car. My favorite story to tell people about what my grandpa did for me was when I woke up and went to drive my car, and there was an envelope tucked into the steering wheel cover. I was shocked to find money and a note that he had used the spare key to take my car out to fill it with gas.

My grandparents are also so supportive when it comes to my activities. My grandparents came to every color guard competition when I was in middle school and high school, and they do their bests to make it to my competitions, today. Even though health troubles keep them away, sometimes, that doesn’t stop them from watching my shows on Facebook.

They are, also, super supportive of my writing. They always want to know what I am writing next. They have nothing but kind words and constantly encourage me to continue writing.

One tradition that my grandma has made is making me anything I want to eat for my birthday dinner. She does this every year because my birthday is in December, and there isn’t much I can do. I am so grateful for this, not only because she lets me have my choice, but because her birthday is the day after mine, and we celebrate our birthdays together. She works endlessly to make my birthday special, even though it is her birthday celebration too!

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

What a Grandparent’s Unconditional Love Does

When adults describe their grandparents, one phrase appears again and again: unconditional love . When we are healthy, mature grandparents functioning well in the family, love and grace become the driving forces of our relationships with our grands.

Here are some examples we’ve collected:

They did not have the best of everything or a lot of anything, but they made sure I was loved unconditionally. I miss them!

What a Grandparent’s Unconditional Love Does

[From Grandma] I have learned how to love unconditionally, to forgive without question, to be a positive example … and to not be so judgmental of others.

My grandma was a nurse who taught me to care about life, to serve others, and to become a happy and kindhearted person. I’m convinced grandmas are God’s angels who touch our lives and hearts with their unconditional love .

My grandma raised six children and ran the family farm after my grandpa’s death at a young age, and she did all this without so much as a complaint. She also didn’t allow sadness to take over. She taught us unconditional love and acceptance.

Grandparenting is about giving unconditional love, sitting on the floor and playing without worrying about the dirty dishes, and recognizing the important and blessed role I play in the lives of my grandchildren. I only hope I can live up to the example my grandma set.

A grandparent’s unconditional love sticks with children for many years. But where does that come from?

Part of it is from the freedom and hope and joy we feel with our grandchildren that we may not have known as parents. We have less of our ego wrapped up in our grandchildren’s behavior or performance, and so we accept them for who they are, we love them unconditionally, and we can be there for them in a way no one else can.

Most of us would do anything in our power for those precious grandkids. And sometimes that’s easy, but often our love will be tested by broken relationships , or when a grandchild takes a path that goes against what we believe.

But really, aren’t those the times that define love as unconditional ?

Maybe love will motivate us to appreciate the person even when we don’t approve of their actions. Or we admit that we were wrong and ask forgiveness . Maybe we’ll make sacrifices so we can take on a bigger role in mentoring or caring for our grandkids during a time of need.

Those grace-filled connections with our grandchildren will also be vitally important during the child’s teen years, which are often difficult for everyone in the family. When communication breaks down or emotions are running high at home, everyone benefits when grandparents are available. Parents can go to their parents for wisdom, and teens can turn to Grandpa or Grandma for unconditional love. We grandparents also help to meet needs in ways the parents can’t, or that they don’t see, which can be a huge help.

That’s what love does. And grandparents can do it like no one else.

How my grandparents taught me to love by faith.

Who has inspired you to love by faith? How has it changed your life?

For many reasons I have inherited an unlikely legacy.

My family is a mix of races and ethnicities brought together from three continents through generations of adoption and marriage.

As a Korean-born girl adopted into an American family in the Midwest, I often struggled to find my place between worlds. I landed in the blank hyphenated space between Asian and American, thoroughly one, but seen as another. Over the years, my sense of belonging has been drawn significantly from my grandparents’ belief in the diversity and depth of the body of Christ.

My father’s parents led textured lives that, in retrospect, seem larger than life. I had the pleasure of knowing them best in their mellowed and observant later years, when memories are warmer and edges softer. The story of their lives came to me over Frosted Flakes for breakfast on a sunny Denver porch, in dusty trunks of old letters and trinkets, and the interrupted telling of tales as each attempted to tell it right.

My grandmother was raised by a single mother with her brothers in Ohio. Later, during the Depression, she ventured to southern Virginia to teach, and married my grandfather, a man whose Virginia roots are centuries old and include a Confederate general. It’s a complex history of land and slaves, war and loss, faith and reconciliation.

During the segregation years in southern Virginia, my grandfather’s business was completely open to all customers regardless of race. He hired local Black tradesmen rather than seeking white tradesmen from neighboring towns. An invitation to join the all-white country club was declined, despite the boost it could have brought to his business.

Eventually my grandparents left Virginia, but their lives were set in a pattern of loving by faith. For them it was a natural extension of their journey to a deeper and more personal faith in Jesus Christ. The result was a genuinely open life that shaped their family for generations to come.

The richness of this legacy has deepened as I’ve matured and come to a place where I can see how boldly and courageously they lived. From them I’ve taken three key things with me:

Beulah, Grand Forks, Reynolds Students Win ‘Why I Love My Grandparents’ Essay Contest

Grandparents’ Day this Sunday, Sept. 7, will be even more special for many grandmothers and grandfathers. They were the subjects of essays written by their grandchildren for AARP North Dakota’s “Why I Love My Grandparents” essay contest. Emily Severinson of Reynolds submitted the top entry in the 15-18 age group. She is the daughter of Gordon and Elizabeth Severinson and a sophomore at Central Valley High School. Victoria Hafner of Beulah submitted the winning entry in the 11-14 age group. She is the daughter of Denise and Mark Hafner and in eighth grade at Beulah Middle School. Isaac Emineth of Grand Forks was the winner of the 6-10 age group. He is the son of Russ and Michelle Emineth of Grand Forks and a fifth grader at Holy Family-St. Mary’s Catholic School in Grand Forks. Each of their essays are published below. “From reading the essays, children obviously receive tremendous spiritual and emotional support from their grandparents, even if they don’t live nearby,” said AARP State Director Janis Cheney. “All of the essays conveyed the distinctive bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. As we recognize Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, we hope people of all ages reflect upon and celebrate the role grandparents have played in their lives.” Grandparent resources can be found on AARP’s website .

All About My Grandpa Dennis By Isaac Emineth My Grandpa Dennis Bartsch lives outside of Bismarck, ND, where he raises chickens and horses on a small hobby farm. Whenever I go to his farm, my family and I love riding horses and my Grandpa has no problem saddling them up on the spot because he loves us and he rides so much. My Grandpa is a great person to have around. He is a great role model to my cousins and to me. He always uses appropriate language. He is respectful to everyone around him. He doesn’t raise his voice to me and he is always concerned about how I feel. He is good at making me laugh. My Grandpa Dennis is very special to me because he always keeps his word. He tells me the truth. As a kid, I really appreciate that. I have fun spending time with him especially when he takes me to a movie. My Grandpa and I both love butterscotch shakes. There is nothing like a trip to the BIG BOY in Bismarck for a good butterscotch shake. When he makes a stop at his favorite coffee place, he always buys me a hot chocolate. Grandpa makes a mean chili. He even won a CHILI COOK OFF! My Grandpa volunteers his time in the community. He helps serve coffee and rolls after church on Sundays. One of my favorite things when visiting him is to help with serving coffee and rolls. He makes sure I get an extra roll or two. He’s spent time serving meals at the Soup Kitchen. He is always willing to help others in need. Last, but not least, he has a loving soul that never forgets the most important things in life, family. I just like spending time with my Grandpa.

My grandparents’ house was the place where me and my cousins became best friends. Their house was also very special to me because I knew this was the place where my mom grew up. When I was a little girl, I loved spending the night at my grandparents’ house. Every night my grandmother and grandfather would come and tuck me in bed then they would tell me funny stories. This is one of the main reasons I love my grandparents, but there are way more reasons to discover. A grandmother is like an angel, who takes you under her wings, she prays and watches over you and she’d give you anything. My grandmother is my angel because she is always there for me. My grandmother was the one that cooked, baked and made things with me. My grandmother was the one that did crafts with me and painted with me. My grandmother was also the one that let me come and plant flowers with her. I loved doing these things with her. It wasn’t just a way to get out and do stuff. It was a way of getting to spend time with my grandmother. These were only some of the best times I got to spend with her. I love my grandmother in ways words can’t even describe. My Best Friends By Emily Severinson If I were to describe my grandparents I would have to say that they were quite the pair and the most amazing grandparents anyone could ever want. My childhood was filled with priceless memories of spending time at their house which was close by. They were two of my best friends and that’s only one of the reasons why I love them. I remember riding my bike over to my Papa and Grandma’s house almost every single day during the summer. My grandma and I would bake but my papa always found a way to give me a bad time. Even though I would never admit it, I looked forward to him making fun of my likes and dislikes because every once in a while I did the same to him. It was never the big things that made my time with them so special. It was the simplest little things that I could look forward to like going grocery shopping with my grandma or sitting on the swing listening to stories my Papa told about the “good ole’ days.” One of my favorite memories is when my Grandma and I went shopping somewhere and my dad would just drop us off. When we were shopping at Hugo’s, she always bought me an iced cookie from the bakery. The trip wasn’t complete without it. During my phase of wearing nothing but black after my Papa passed, she did everything she could to get some color into my wardrobe by taking me to Penny’s. She never really liked to take no for an answer. If you’ve ever heard the song “Grandpa” by the Judds, you would realize that it’s true how so much has changed between now and the time when my grandparents were my age. Back then people kept their promises and families went to church on a regular basis. They had values that never changed just because it made life easier, and it took me a while to begin to understand that. Through their stories, I learned a great deal about why they felt the way they did about the new advancements in technology and how people seem to have forgotten how it’s the little things that matter and not how much money you spend. One thing I’ve always admired about them was how much strength they had. It never really seemed to matter how much pain they were in because they always did their best not to show it. It seems stubborn, which it was, but they didn’t want us to worry about them. Although, it never stopped us. I doubt they would have ever admitted that it was a pride thing. In my opinion, I wouldn’t be who I am today if I weren’t so close to them. They actually fed my imagination with the craziest ideas or words such as “doodaddyofaprefinelly.” My grandma would play with me for hours on end and let me make the most insane concoctions from whatever I could find in the kitchen. My grandpa would listen to his audio books and I would actually listen along and try to imagine myself in these situations and how my favorite story book characters would handle those particular predicaments. That could very well be one of the reasons why I love to write so much now. My family remembers my grandparents for their stories but mainly the unconditional love they gave us. Christmas was always an interesting ordeal in my family. My Papa had a thing for gag gifts such as old false teeth and handing out carrots. They were there for every wedding, for every bike accident and mostly for the little things that will be remembered most of all. Now that I really think about it, they did help mold me into who I am today. I was always “Papa’s girl’ sense of humor and all. My grandma was sometimes the only person I would listen to when I did something wrong because the worst feeling is disappointing your grandma. No matter how much of a freak I thought I was, they were the ones who made me feel like I belonged, besides my parents. However, I found it easier to believe that I wasn’t a freak when they told me, rather than my mom and dad. They serve as amazing inspiration for my writing because their personalities were so colorful and they were a huge part of my childhood. I could never thank them enough for that.

When my 89-year-old grandmother moved out of her home, I was tasked with going through her personal belongings. I didn't know where to start. Her house was small and tidy, but she had no use for minimalism like I did. She'd kept everything.

I began in her bedroom. The dresser was overflowing with scarves, jewelry, and empty perfume bottles. It took me all day to go through six drawers. But tucked away securely in a string-wrapped envelope was a stack of love letters my grandfather wrote to her when they were dating. These treasured notes from the 1920s were fragile and falling apart — and a time capsule of what dating was like 100 years ago.

Watching my own two kids navigate dating in their 20s , my grandparents would be amazed at their constant access to one another and ability to track each other's location . But there's something to be said for opening a letter in the mail and seeing a loved one's handwriting. For perspective, my grown kids raised in the digital age don't know how to address an envelope.

I learned about history and what their lives were like

Postmarked 1923 and 1924, most began with an endearment like "My dearest little dear" or simply, "My dear Alice." This cache of letters not only allowed me a glimpse into their young lives but was a much more engrossing account of history than any book I'd ever read. He wrote of strikes, fear of unemployment, prohibition , and how much he missed her.

Some facets of life in the 1920s are relatable today. He always asked her for pictures ("in the black dress you showed me" or "in your new swimsuit") and finally bought her a Kodak camera so she could take photos of herself. He sent off for a Sears Roebuck catalog so he could mail-order medicine. And he eventually found a place for them to live once they were married near a Piggly Wiggly grocer "so we won't have to tote the groceries far."

As an only child , I'm struck by the privilege of seeing this intimate side of my heritage. I know how it ended — my grandparents sitting at their Formica kitchen table, watching the hummingbirds and sharing the daily newspaper — but what a gift to see how it began.

Life may be easier now, but it was simpler then. I saved notes my husband wrote me when we were dating, but my kids and their friends don't communicate this way anymore. Love letters, written in cursive and sealed with a kiss, may truly be a relic of the past.

3 Steps for Culturally Competent Education Outside the Classroom

Search online for “culturally competent education” and you’ll find a wealth of curricula, reading lists, and professional development resources designed for teachers. However, you’ll have a far more difficult time finding guidance for the noninstructional staff in our nation’s schools to create a culture of anti-racism.

As a Black educator and former elementary school teacher, I certainly know how important it is that the curriculum accurately reflects the histories and experiences of Black and brown students. As the current director of operations of a charter school district, I also know that well-run school operations are necessary for teachers to focus on the students in front of them.

Different schools structure their school operations teams in different ways, but most schools, including traditional public schools and charter schools, have an office staff that work tirelessly behind the scenes to support teachers and school leaders. This team plays an essential role in operating the school, and these individuals are often the first faces students and families see when entering the building. That is why is it crucial that we include the staff who manage school operations in our efforts to make our schools more equitable spaces.

Transitioning to a culture of anti-racist school operations requires thoughtful planning and coordination between the school operations and leadership teams in three key areas:

Family-engagement practices: Family-engagement practices can make or break a school community. Many families of color walk into schools with their own past trauma from their educational experiences. Recognizing this and actively creating a space where families’ voices and experiences are uplifted and valued is an important first step.

Teachers and administrators must be aware of their positional power when conversing with families. While master’s degrees and teaching credentials are valuable, families bring a unique set of skills, connections, and a deep knowledge about their child that is crucial for schools to validate.

The front-office staff must create a space that is warm, inviting, and kind to all families, even when those families are expressing serious frustrations.

Schools can consider the following suggestions and questions:

What are the school translation policies? Do they send out messages that all families can engage with?
Are the school flyers and family-led groups inclusive of all family types, or do they always address “Mom and Dad” or “parents”? I often suggest using generalized language such as “guardian” or “family council” to be more inclusive of grandparents, aunties, uncles, and guardians who often play a crucial role in bringing a child up.
Is your front office welcoming? Does it display community resources? Are there pictures of students and families that show that the school invests in its community?
Are you inviting—not demanding—feedback on school policies from families?

School purchasing power: Most schools don’t have an abundance of funds. Especially in areas where K-12 enrollment is in decline, public and charter schools have a duty to make fiscally responsible decisions with taxpayer dollars. However, schools still have an enormous amount of purchasing power. While it’s easy to buy all school supplies through major corporations such as Amazon or Staples, there may be opportunities for schools to partner with local organizations to purchase books, curriculum, and school supplies.

When I was working as the director of operations at a school in a primarily Black neighborhood in Boston, my school made the conscious effort to redirect significant funds to a local Black-owned bookstore by buying a large portion of our classroom library and curriculum books from that vendor rather than Amazon.

Through state grants, some schools can partner with community organizations to provide services to students and families. In my state of California, for example, schools can apply for community schools grants to fund programs and partnerships that serve the school community.

A few easy changes:

School operations teams should create “asset maps” that map out local businesses and nearby organizations that schools can work with. You’ll find that many organizations have their own deep connections to the school and are excited to partner. This type of connection can also drive future philanthropic support.
Do you have a staff professional development lunch coming up? Consider having it catered by a minority-owned restaurant.
Does your school order staff “swag” in the form of custom apparel? You’d be surprised how many minority- and family-owned options there are for T-shirts and other apparel.
For individuals who work at the district level and manage requests for proposals for their school organizations, is there an opportunity to consider equity as a component of the evaluation process?

School nutrition program : There are plenty of data that link the importance of eating breakfast and nutritious meals throughout the school day with academic success . While nutritional standards and compliance regulations create environments where schools may not be able to serve food daily that students truly “love,” there may be room to consider opportunities to strengthen the school’s holistic approach to breakfast and lunch. Schools may consider the following:

Does your food service allow students to try foods from different cultures? Is there variety in the food options?
Does your school have a “healthy food policy?” If so, is the purpose to encourage healthy living and general wellness, or is it about policing student choices? When schools have healthy food policies that outlaw even occasional sweets and treats, it creates an environment where we demean opportunities to celebrate rather than teach moderation.
What is your school’s approach to free and reduced-price lunch? Is there an opportunity to reduce the stigma in your lunch practices?

School operations often cover much more than these three buckets, including student transportation, health and immunizations, student data and attendance, and recruitment and facilities. It is my belief, however, that these steps are a good starting point to aligning culturally competent academic practices with operational practices.

As we approach summer break, school operations teams can start this work by reevaluating existing operations practices and school policies to allow for more culturally competent choices. In collaboration with school leaders, school operations teams can identify areas for improvement, tap into community voices, and have conversations about taking concrete steps toward lasting and impactful change. This will then create greater alignment with school academics and lead to increased student success far beyond the classroom.

Opinion It’s not so ‘terribly strange to be 70’

I turned 70 today, a young age for an older person to be, but it is the oldest I have ever been by a long shot. It has been well over six decades since I learned in arithmetic how to carry the one, and the rest has sped by like microfiche.

One big juicy, messy, hard, joyful, quiet life. That’s what my 70 years have bequeathed me.

In my teens, already drinking and drugging, I didn’t expect to see 21, and at 21, out of control, I didn’t expect to see 30. At 30, I had published three books but, as a sober friend put it, was deteriorating faster than I could lower my standards.

Then at 32, I got clean and sober, the miracle of my life from which all other blessings flow. My son was born three years later. The apple fell close to the tree: My son went off the rails, too. He and his partner had a baby at 19, which had not been in my specific plans for him, but you know the old line: If you want to make God laugh, tell Her your plans.

The baby, soon to get his learner’s permit, turned out to be the gift of a lifetime. My son got clean and sober 13 years ago, and the three of us grew up together. Then after a long search, I met this brilliant, kind writer guy and, three days after I started getting Social Security, I married him. Yesterday, I published my 20th book, called “Somehow.” Today, when I woke up, I was 70. Seventy!

I think that I am only 57, but the paperwork does not back this up. I don’t feel old, because your inside self doesn’t age. When younger people ask me when I graduated from high school and I say 1971, there’s a moment’s pause, as if this is inconceivable and I might as well have said 20 B.C. That’s when I feel my age. But I smile winsomely because, while I would like to have their skin, hearing, vision, memory, balance, stamina and focus, I would not go back even one year.

My older friends and I know a thing or two.

In general, though, I know how little I know. This is a big relief.

I know that my lifelong belief, that to be beyond reproach offers shelter and protection, is a lie. Shelter is an inside job, protection an illusion. We are as vulnerable as kittens. Love fends off the worst of it.

I know now that everyone is screwed up to some degree, and that everyone screws up. Phew. I thought for decades it was just me, that all of you had been issued owner’s manuals in second grade, the day I was home with measles. We are all figuring it out as we go. Aging is grad school.

I know a very little bit about God, or goodness, or good orderly direction. I am a believer, but I don’t trouble myself about ultimate reality, the triune nature of the deity or who shot the Holy Ghost. I say help a lot, and thanks, and are You kidding me??? Have You been drinking again, Friend?

I know about something I will call cloak hope, most obvious to me in the people who swooped in and helped me get sober in 1986, and swooped down again in 2012 for my child. In my case, an elderly sober woman named Ruby saw me in my utter, trembly hopelessness — afraid, smelly and arrogant; she swept in and took me under her wing. She wrapped her cloak around me and was the counternarrative to all I believed at 32, i.e., that I needed to figure things out, especially myself, and who to blame.

I know the beauty of shadows. Shadows show us how life can gleam in contrast. Sunshine might be dancing outside the window, but the wonder is in the variegation, with fat white clouds bunched up on the right casting shadows on the hills and gardens, and brushstrokes of gray clouds on the left and — most magical — the long narrow shawl of fog right across the top of the ridge. The day is saying, Who knows how the weather will morph, but meanwhile so much is possible. And that is life asserting itself.

I know life will assert itself. Knowing this means I have a shot at some measure of pliability, like a willow tree that is maybe having an iffy day.

I know everything is in flux, that all things will turn into other things. I am uncomfortable with this but less so than in younger years. Michael Pollan wrote, “Look into a flower, and what do you see? Into the very heart of nature’s double nature — that is, the contending energies of creation and dissolution, the spiring toward complex form and the tidal pull away from it.” So I don’t sweat feeling a little disoriented some days.

I have grown mostly unafraid of my own death, except late at night when I head to WebMD and learn that my symptoms are probably cancer.

I know and am constantly aware of how much we have all lost and are in danger of losing — I am not going to name names — and am awash with gratitude for lovely, funny things that are still here and still work.

I know how to let go now, mostly, although it is not a lovely Hallmark process, and when well-wishers from my spiritual community exhort me to let go and let God, I want to Taser them. But I know that when I finally tell a best friend of my thistly stuckness, the telling is the beginning of release. You have to learn to let go. Otherwise, you get dragged, or you become George Costanza’s father pounding the table and shouting, “Serenity now!”

I know that people and pets I adore will keep dying, and it will never be okay, and then it will, sort of, mostly. I know the cycle is life, death, new life, and I think this is a bad system, but it is the one currently in place.

I know I will space out and screw up right and left as I head out on this book tour, say things I wish I could take back, forget things, sometimes onstage, and lose things. I just will.

I recently went to Costa Rica, where my husband was giving a spiritual retreat, and I forgot my pants. My pants! And last month, I went to give a talk at a theater two states away and forgot to bring any makeup. I am quite pale, almost light blue in some places — think of someone from “Game of Thrones” with a head cold — and ghostly under bright lights. When I discovered this omission, I was wearing only tinted moisturizer, powder on my nose and light pink lip gloss.

I gave myself an inspiring pep talk on my inner beauty, the light within. And then I had a moment of clarity: I asked the person driving me to the venue to stop at CVS, where I bought blush and a lipstick that was accidentally brighter and glossier than I usually wear. I looked fabulous. Age is just a number when you still know how to shine. And I shone.

The boys spilled out of the locker room in a gnashing horde.

They pitched their bodies into the air and flung clumps of sweaty hair from their faces, headbanging in line with the stomping bass that had just cracked across the gym’s sound system.

Full of flowing hormones and covered in dried sweat, the entirety of my high school gym class began to move to the music — each individual in their own way — enraptured by its energy and still thrumming with adrenaline from 2v2 basketball scrimmages.

For a few fleeting minutes, social stratification was entirely dismantled by one rotating guitar riff. Sports jocks, guys who stuffed their bottom lip with dip in the back of class, girls who smelled like vanilla and bright artificial fruit, and reticent wallflowers, all churning together.

By the time the bell rang, prodding us toward precalc or a quiz on “The Sound and the Fury,” it did, in fact, smell like teen spirit.

We filed out of the gym, buzzing and bedraggled. A shared ecstasy lingered, if only until the next period began.

Experiencing that subtle, shimmering solidarity, the threading of different social subgroups together, is intrinsic to my attachment — as a member of Gen Z , not X — to Kurt Cobain, frontman of the iconic '90s grunge rock band Nirvana.

Since the genesis of the band in 1987 — and Cobain’s subsequent, seismic fame, then tragic death by suicide — he’s functioned as something of a talismanic leader for generations of morose, angsty and disaffected fans. Some of this posthumous cultural longevity is surely due to his premature death, which preserved him in amber, devoid of a flop era and safe from cancellable offense. But that doesn't entirely explain his enduring appeal. Cobain’s emotional melancholy is something members of Gen Z — widely understood as prone to trauma-dumping on the internet and hyper-sensitivity — can find particularly relatable.

Raised by Gen X parents like mine whose early adulthoods were largely defined by Nirvana and Cobain, his music became part of a shared, familial identity they could pass down to us. In a recent essay for The Guardian, writer Hannah Ewens opines that “Just as the Beatles defined the construct of a rock band, Nirvana redefined what a band was — both in the public consciousness and to other musicians: unpretentious, tough and sensitive, embraced by the system while threatening it.” It's not particularly rebellious to embrace your parents' definition of good music, but over time, I forged my own relationship with Kurt Cobain, distinct from theirs.

In all honestly, I’ve always felt several standard deviations away from what feels normal (an entirely subjective term). I know this sounds moderately insufferable, but bear with me. My life has been overwhelmingly positive in so many ways. And yet, setting aside personal conflicts and a heady amalgam of ADHD and anxiety, much of it has also felt very different to me than how it’s appeared outwardly to others. I don’t have a complex, philosophical explanation for this discrepancy. I don’t think you always need one. Cobain's music gives me a language for reconciling my own contradictions. We aren't the same by any means: I've had no meteoric rise to fame, no heroin addiction. But there was still a person named Kurt before all that happened to him.

During my first years of college, like many, I struggled with finding my sense of self. Flush with insecurities of every kind, I tried on different personalities (and some bad outfits) in an effort to, if not wholly reinvent myself, at least discover something about myself that I actually liked or felt secure about. It was a process that ultimately backfired — by trying to be someone I wasn’t, I inadvertently jettisoned some of the most fundamentally defining pieces of myself. And all the while, I was still as sullen and angsty as ever. That all changed on Christmas Day, 2018, when my parents gave me my first pair of Doc Marten boots.

Laugh if you will, but getting my Docs was like finding my glass slipper. At nearly 6 feet tall, I’d always felt something like Cinderella’s stepsisters, trying to cram my oversized foot into a tiny, dainty, acceptably pretty and interesting shoe. I wear them most days now. Aside from being comfortable, they're equipped with a steel-toed tenacity ideal for navigating New York’s perpetually crusty streets.

And yes, Docs were a subcultural fashion item of the ‘90s — my dad still owns the pair he wore moshing at a Nirvana show with my mom at the now-shuttered Roseland Ballroom in New York in 1993. While Cobain wore Converse for that particular performance, I’m certain he laced up his boots often too. I often find myself gravitating toward those looks: slouchy pants, oversized jackets and knitwear, the occasional grandpa cardigan. As I’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly confident in myself and my fashion choices, aware that the old adage is true: What you wear is truly a reflection of who you are. I’m sure that’s what Cobain was trying to convey every time he opted for a skirt or floral-patterned dress for a live performance. That has always been an inspiring exemplar of unabashed confidence to me.

But carrying yourself with confidence in public doesn’t necessarily equate to comfort with — or suitability for — fame, as Cobain's conflicted relationship to the celebrity status that accompanied his artistic success showed me. Regardless of whether he sought to be an international star before it happened, the “slings and arrows” of fame that writer Michael Azerrad wrote about in part for the 2021 New Yorker essay, “My Time With Kurt Cobain,” underpinned the rocker’s mental and emotional health struggles.

In all likelihood, I’ll never be famous, and that’s OK. It’s not exactly something I aspire toward. But the essence of Cobain’s fame has always been incredibly relatable to me. There’s something so vulnerable and real — in an attention economy that demands performance from us all — about someone trying to keep a firm foothold in two warring worlds simultaneously, straddling the ever-oscillating line of what the public sees and what it can't. (“I’m not like them, but I can pretend,” resonates.)

This tension that seems innately bound into Cobain's persona — and Nirvana more broadly — is accurately reflected in the band’s lyrics. Dark, atmospheric themes abound — anger, personal struggles, violence, real and figurative — and while the sometimes disturbing subject matter can be difficult to take, I found the messages braided into them intriguing. His lyrics reflected Cobain’s chaos and mystique, which is to say, I didn’t necessarily understand them all, especially as a kid. All I knew was — mingled with his raspy voice and the band’s splintering sounds — they made me feel at an entirely unprecedented level. And some latent part of me was drawn to that brooding sentiment.

It came as no surprise to me when I learned that he was also a Pisces.

Whether you believe in astrological signs or find it all to be a bit hokey, I find that Cobain embodied the compassion, sensitivity and emotional profundity that have come to be associated with the symbol of two fish swimming in opposite directions. That division between fantasy and reality — a liminal space I constantly turn to — is one that Cobain ostensibly occupied just as frequently. It’s something like the Vitruvian man, constantly splayed in different directions by our thoughts and ever-shifting emotions. It’s an identity Cobain internalized so intensely that he even carried it with him into his death in April of 1994, writing in his suicide note that he was a “sad little, sensitive, unappreciative Pisces, Jesus man.”

I’ve always known that finding comfort in the music and fashion of my parents’ generation, specifically the elements of it that have since become canonical, is a byproduct of my close-knit and large immediate family. It’s an idiosyncratic, shared existence — something that makes me feel comforted and protective at once. And yet, I’m my own person. While I would be remiss to ignore the inescapability of influence, my relationship with Cobain and his work could never precisely mirror theirs. And I think that’s part of his legacy. He was able to transcend space and time so seamlessly, so acutely, that his aura — which has spoken to my mom and dad for nearly 40 years — now screams to me from a stage set in an entirely different void.

So consider me influenced, if that’s what becoming secure in my tastes and personhood means. I won’t be running from that anytime soon.
