Argumentative Essay: Online Learning and Educational Access

Conventional learning is evolving with the help of computers and online technology. New ways of learning are now available, and improved access is one of the most important benefits available. People all around the world are experiencing improved mobility as a result of the freedom and potential that online learning provides, and as academic institutions and learning organisations adopt online learning technologies and remote-access learning, formal academic education is becoming increasingly legitimate. This essay argues the contemporary benefits of online learning, and that these benefits significantly outweigh the issues, challenges and disadvantages of online learning.

Online learning is giving people new choices and newfound flexibility with their personal learning and development. Whereas before, formal academic qualifications could only be gained by participating in a full time course on site, the internet has allowed institutions to expand their reach and offer recognized courses on a contact-partial, or totally virtual, basis. Institutions can do so with relatively few extra resources, and for paid courses this constitutes excellent value, and the student benefits with greater educational access and greater flexibility to learn and get qualified even when there lots of other personal commitments to deal with.

Flexibility is certainly one of the most important benefits, but just as important is educational access. On top of the internet’s widespread presence in developed countries, the internet is becoming increasingly available in newly developed and developing countries. Even without considering the general informational exposure that the internet delivers, online academic courses and learning initiatives are becoming more aware of the needs of people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and this means that people from such backgrounds are in a much better position to learn and progress than they used to be.

The biggest argument that raises doubt over online learning is the quality of online courses in comparison to conventional courses. Are such online courses good enough for employers to take notice? The second biggest argument is the current reality that faces many people from disadvantaged backgrounds, despite the improvements made in this area in recent years – they do not have the level of basic access needed to benefit from online learning. In fact, there are numerous sources of evidence that claim disadvantaged students are not receiving anywhere near the sort of benefits that online learning institutions and promoters are trying to instigate. Currently there are many organisations, campaigns and initiatives that are working to expand access to higher education. With such high participation, it can be argued that it is only a matter of time before the benefits are truly realised, but what about the global online infrastructure?

There is another argument that is very difficult to dispel, and that is the response of different types of students to the online learning paradigm. Evidence shows that there are certain groups of students that benefit from college distance learning much more than other groups. In essence, students must be highly motivated and highly disciplined if they are to learn effectively in their own private environment.

An Argumentative-Writing Unit for Students Doing Remote Learning

Suggestions for self-guided activities that can help students practice making claims and supporting them with evidence.

Whether you’re here because your school has switched to remote learning or because you just want to sharpen your argumentative skills, welcome to our first “unit” written directly to students.

Of course, we know this isn’t a full unit like one you might work on over several weeks in school, under the direction of a teacher. Instead, it’s a streamlined version of the many resources our site offers on this topic, written in a way we hope teenagers can follow, at least in part, on their own.

If you are familiar with our site, then you know we believe strongly in student voice and choice. No matter how you use the ideas below, there is a lot of flexibility. You can choose what’s most relevant, interesting and meaningful to you as you go.

Here, in three items, is what you’ll be doing. How and in what order is up to you, though we have suggested a sequence.

Using our daily writing prompts to practice making arguments , either by posting a comment on our site, or by writing just for yourself, or for classmates or for a teacher in a remote learning-management system.

We’ve been asking a question a day since 2009, so you have lots to choose from. For instance, if the question “ Should parents track their children? ” doesn’t interest you, maybe “ Do memes make the internet a better place? ” will.

Studying some argumentative “mentor texts” — that is, good published examples full of “writer’s moves” you can borrow — that were written by fellow teenagers and by adults.

Writing a polished, 450-word opinion piece to submit to our Student Editorial Contest, which ends on April 21. We’ll pick winners, runners-up and honorable mentions and publish them on The Learning Network.

Step 1: Create a free account.

Before you do anything else, you should create a free account so you can comment on our writing prompts. Here’s a video that walks you through the process.

Note: If you are under 13, you cannot post a public comment on NYTimes.com. If you are 13 to 18 years old, you should ask a parent or guardian to help you register because they will need to approve the Terms of Service.

Step 2: Submit a comment.

Now you’re ready to submit your first comment.

Scroll through the list and choose any prompt that interests you. Read the prompt, think about what you want to say and click on the comment button. Enter your name and location, type in your comment and press submit. Congratulations! You submitted your first comment.

Tip 1: Your name can be just your first name — or any format your teacher gives you. Your location can be your school, your city, state or even country.

Tip 2: Your comment won’t appear right away. We have moderators who approve every comment before it publishes, so please be patient.

Step 3: Get into the routine of writing casually.

We recommend that you respond to at least one new prompt each school day. If you’re feeling inspired, do more. We’re not looking for perfect grammar or structure, we’re just looking for thoughtful engagement with the question. It’s an easy way to flex your writing muscles.

Before you respond, you might think about the point you want to make, and consider how you’ll support that opinion with either evidence from the article or from your own life experiences and observations.

Step 4: Reply to other students.

One of the things that make our comment section special is that students from all over the world participate.

Before you comment, read what other students have written. Pay attention to both what they say and how they say it. If they make a really good point, take note. If their writing is very clear and persuasive, think about how they did that.

If someone’s comment makes an impression on you, you can submit a reply. Above is an example of that kind of conversation, from this writing prompt .

Tip: When your comment is published, you’ll receive a confirmation email. You can forward this to your teacher to prove that you submitted a comment.

Step 5: Pick an issue you want to write about.

This unit culminates in our annual Student Editorial Contest , in which you’re invited to write about something you care about, and persuade us to care about it, too.

Here’s the challenge:

Choose a topic you care about — whether it’s something we’ve addressed on The Learning Network or not — then gather evidence from sources both inside and outside The New York Times and write a concise editorial (450 words or fewer) to convince readers of your view.

In the past, students have won by taking on topics as diverse as social media and policing ; video gaming and voting ; why it’s fine to be messy and why we should all eat more bugs . Scroll through our past winners, because the list goes on and on .

Think about the topics that matter most to you, and think about why they matter to you. As you’ll see if you read some of the work of our teenage winners, not only is it OK to write this essay from a first-person (“I”) point of view, often a persuasive essay is better when the writer reveals a personal stake in the issue.

Tip: You may want to use one of the topics you’ve already written about in this unit. Or, pick something entirely new. If you’re looking for inspiration, use these two lists to scroll through hundreds of ideas:

Step 6: Do research.

Now that you have a topic, you’ll need to build out your position, and find evidence to support it. Our Editorial Contest requires that you use at least one Times source and one non-Times source in writing your essay. Now is your chance to broaden your “ news diet ” to find reliable sources of all kinds, and to read deeply and widely about this issue.

As you go, take notes. Find quotes from experts that strengthen your position. Seek out alternate perspectives and take them seriously. As you research, it is not uncommon for your position to become more nuanced or even change entirely once you begin to understand the big picture.

Tip: If you don’t have a subscription to The New York Times, you may hit the paywall while you’re doing your research. If you do, you can use the search bar on the Learning Network’s home page — scroll down, and you’ll find it hidden below the featured articles. All the Learning Network’s articles are free, and so are the New York Times links in those articles.

Step 7: Try some of these ‘writer’s moves.’

Now, start drafting. But as you go, you might learn from students who have come before you . What have these winners done that you admire? What lessons might these essays have for your writing?

Choose at least three of the winning essays to read, and take note of what “writer’s moves” impress you. Do they start with a great hook? Do they seamlessly weave in strong evidence? Do they deftly tackle counterarguments? Have they used interesting words or sentence structure?

For example, here is one that is written in the first person and follows a less-traditional structure: The Life-Changing Magic of Being Messy .

And here is one that is more traditional, perhaps like the argumentative essays you have written in school: Accountability-Based Testing Is Broken .

What can you learn from each of them? What strategies might you try?

Once you’ve studied several student essays, you might take a look at the Times Opinion section and find adult-written editorials or Op-Eds you admire. The more you can read and identify what works to persuade an audience, the better you’ll be at wielding those strategies.

Tip: The “writer’s moves” you identify don’t have to be big. Maybe you never realized a paragraph could begin with “For instance,” the way Alan Peng starts his second one: “For instance, as part of the process, teachers are forced to spend more and more time ‘teaching to the test,’ wasting valuable instruction time.” Or maybe you admire the short, punchy sentences Isabel Hwang uses: “Gross? Yes. Bad? Not necessarily.” Mentor texts are very personal — there are as many lessons in a good one as there are individual readers looking for them.

Step 8: Drafting your editorial.

If you’ve studied our previous winners, you probably realize that those essays don’t go by a set formula. Few of them follow all the “rules” of the classic five-paragraph essay, for instance. But all of them, like any good Opinion piece, do have three essential parts: a beginning (your introduction), a middle (the body) and an end (your conclusion).

Here is our contest rubric . As you compose, make sure you have done each of the things we ask, including stating a clear opinion, issuing a call to action around it and using reliable evidence to support your point of view.

Tip: Don’t forget that your editorial cannot be longer than 450 words. You might go into this contest thinking writing “short” is easier than writing “long,” but we hear from students and teachers every year that getting everything you want to say into so few words takes longer than you might think!

Step 9: Submit your editorial.

When you’re finished writing your editorial, find the appropriate submission form on the contest announcement page . Look for the heading: “How to Submit.” If you are over 16, you will use the Student Submission Form. If you are under 16, then have a teacher, parent or guardian submit your editorial using the Teacher Submission Form.

Tip: Ask someone else to read your draft before submitting it. Ask that person: “How well can you follow my argument? Do you find my evidence convincing?”

Pros and Cons of Distance Learning Argumentative Essay

On March 13th, 2020 at the end of the day, schools announced that in-person will be suspended due to Covid-19. The school district decided schools would resume. However, it would take place through online learning. I agree that in-person learning is the best option. As a result, there have been so many negative effects since we moved to distance learning. Distance learning has adversely impacted students from a lack of motivation, mental health issues, and procrastination on assignments. 

Distance learning makes it difficult to keep motivated when you're usually on your own and there's a lack of communication. For instance, You wouldn't get as much help online as you would in-person. Teachers would drive us to do better in school if we were physically there. That is the root of inspiration. Teachers supported us, and we received the assistance we needed. Doing work without inspiration is highly difficult for students. 

Distance learning enables one to procrastinate on tasks even more quickly. For instance, students are making their own environment, which means they are at ease with their own house. We have a lot of distractions at home, which makes it difficult for us to concentrate at school. Ultimately, online material is more difficult to grasp. We can audibly see how these are the underlying causes of procrastination and people face these problems on a regular basis.  

Many people, on the other hand, believe that they have more independence and fewer restrictions online than they do in person. This is particularly valid in recognition of the way that most students are falling behind on assignments and earning low grades. Teachers have been assigning students twice the amount of work. Students stay up all night in order to finish them on time. 

Based on all that has been said, distance learning has proved to be unsuccessful for us, and schools must re-open. There are several disadvantages after nearly a year of distance learning. It's hard to be excited about distance learning because you're always on your own and there's a lack of interaction. Distance learning worsens our procrastination on assignments. This is important because it leads to stress, anxiety, and depression. To improve this society, the schools should resume in-person as it will be of great benefit because you can work at your own pace, school is the best quiet space environment, inspiration, and performing better.

You might be assigned an argumentative essay as a writing exercise in high school or in a composition class. The prompt will often ask you to argue for one of two positions, and may include terms like “argue” or “argument.” It will frequently take the form of a question.

The prompt may also be more open-ended in terms of the possible arguments you could make.

Argumentative writing at college level

At university, the vast majority of essays or papers you write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments about texts.

In this context, you won’t necessarily be told to write an argumentative essay—but making an evidence-based argument is an essential goal of most academic writing, and this should be your default approach unless you’re told otherwise.

Examples of argumentative essay prompts

At a university level, all the prompts below imply an argumentative essay as the appropriate response.

Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on the topic. The essay then argues for that position and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence, evaluation and analysis.

  • Don’t just list all the effects you can think of.
  • Do develop a focused argument about the overall effect and why it matters, backed up by evidence from sources.
  • Don’t just provide a selection of data on the measures’ effectiveness.
  • Do build up your own argument about which kinds of measures have been most or least effective, and why.
  • Don’t just analyze a random selection of doppelgänger characters.
  • Do form an argument about specific texts, comparing and contrasting how they express their thematic concerns through doppelgänger characters.

An argumentative essay should be objective in its approach; your arguments should rely on logic and evidence, not on exaggeration or appeals to emotion.

There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian model.

Toulmin arguments

The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as necessary for the argument:

  • Make a claim
  • Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
  • Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
  • Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and showing that you have considered alternative perspectives

The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You don’t have to use these specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.

Say you’re making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination measures. You might:

  • Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources would be better spent on other approaches
  • Cite data to support your claim
  • Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
  • Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these objections are valid, and if not, why not.

Rogerian arguments

The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:

  • Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
  • Highlight the problems with this position
  • Present your own position , showing how it addresses these problems
  • Suggest a possible compromise —what elements of your position would proponents of the opposing position benefit from adopting?

This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.

Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:

  • Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia
  • Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
  • Suggest that Wikipedia’s system of citations can actually teach students about referencing
  • Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who are skeptical of its usefulness.

You don’t necessarily have to pick one of these models—you may even use elements of both in different parts of your essay—but it’s worth considering them if you struggle to structure your arguments.

Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an introduction , a body , and a conclusion .

Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction . The introduction serves to capture the reader’s interest, provide background information, present your thesis statement , and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here you’ll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis statement is true.

Computer and information technologies have significantly affected all spheres of human life. These technologies have also changed the field of education, since the improvement and development of this direction is one of the main mechanisms that make up the public life of the United States. Thus, a new form of distance learning has appeared in modern human life, which, along with the traditional form, has taken an important place in our society. This kind of training allows not only to study but also to improve the qualification level of its users.

The research paper offered to the reader is devoted to the concept of distance learning, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. The question of the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning has been in the focus of research attention especially against the background of a general quarantine, which justifies the actuality of this topic. To facilitate the preparation of this final project, the author formulates the problem in several forms of proposals, namely:

  • Analysis of the phenomenon of distance learning.
  • Analysis of the pros and cons of distance learning.

This study focuses on analyzing the pros and cons of distance learning, as well as predicting its further application. The results of this study are of practical use, because they will be of interest to students and teachers who are choosing whether to switch to remote learning.

Sawsan Abuhammad, the Assistant Professor in Jordan University of Science and Technology, in his article “Barriers to distance learning during the COVID-19 outbreak: A qualitative review from parents’ perspective” (2020) states the following. The author claims that many parents have faced serious problems in the process of distance learning of their children. The author believes that the barriers that arose among the parents were of a personal, financial and technical nature. In the process of remote learning, students and teachers are at a significant spatial and temporal distance from each other. Teachers use a variety of computer technologies to make the process of remote learning as interesting and useful for students as possible (Schneider and Council). Distance type of education has an important goal-to expand opportunities and provide new services for those people who want to acquire new skills or change their profession. There are six main forms of distance learning, which are the most common.

  • external education;
  • university education;
  • training that involves the cooperation of several educational institutions;
  • creation of specialized institutions where distance classes are held;
  • autonomous learning systems;
  • special multimedia courses that differ in a certain informal component.

At the same time, different technologies are combined: pedagogical, informational, and often andragogic. There is a British synchronous model of distance learning and an American asynchronous one. Distance education is a new, specific form of education, somewhat different from the usual forms of full-time or distance learning (Dietrich et al.). As for the present, the real contingent of potential students can include those who are often on business trips, military personnel, women on maternity leave, and people with physical disabilities. In addition, this category consists of those who want to get additional education with a lack of time. Distance learning has several key characteristics that are important to consider when analyzing this type of learning.

  • flexible and convenient schedule of classes;
  • modularity;
  • mass character;
  • active mutual communication and a variety of communication tools;
  • the totality of knowledge and orientation to the independence of students, to the motivation of learning.

Indeed, the effectiveness of distance learning directly depends on those teachers who work with students on the Internet. Such teachers should be psychologically ready to work with students in a new educational and cognitive network environment. Another problem is the infrastructure of student information support in networks. The question of what the structure and composition of the educational material should be remains open. Also, the question is raised about the conditions of access to distance learning courses.

Analyzing the components of distance learning related to the educational institution, they can determine the structure of the network system. It should include educational material submitted in the form of programs, tasks, control and graduation papers, and scientific and practical assistance (Costa et al.). The student should be provided with fundamental printed textbooks, teaching aids, and hypertext multimedia programs (Arthur-Nyarko et al.). Additional materials may include lectures prepared by teachers on disciplines that can be transmitted via the network. In addition, distance learning provides communication in various modes, teacher advice on implementing term papers, theses, or other final work.

The essential component of distance learning is the ability to consider situations that are close to reality. In addition, important elements are creating conditions for the self-realization of students, the disclosure of their potential, the systematic learning process, the individuality of the approach (Bojović et al.). This component is the basis of academic and cognitive activity and affects the quality of distance learning.

Electronic versions of textbooks, which became the basis for the creation of distance courses and traditional books, do not solve the problems of independent activity in obtaining knowledge. These software products only create a virtual learning environment in which distance learning is carried out. Here there are psychological problems, such as inexperience, lack of self-education skills, poor volitional self-regulation, the influence of group attitudes, etc. When developing distance learning programs, it is crucial to carefully plan classes, including each of them with the setting of learning goals and objectives.

If interpersonal communication between students and the teacher is ineffective, there is a possibility of a communication barrier. If this happens, the information is delivered in a distorted form, which leads to the fact that there is a threat of the cognitive barrier growing into a relationship barrier. The barrier of relations turns into a feeling of distrust and hostility towards information and its source.

There are also many disadvantages in distance learning that should be listed and that cannot be ignored. It is worth starting with technical and methodological problems, including ignoring the psychological laws of perception and assimilation of information using multimedia tools of different modalities. There are also methodological problems, including the complexity of developing electronic versions of traditional educational materials, primarily textbooks and practical manuals.

Many students and experts believe that distance learning has many indisputable and obvious advantages.

  • A student studying remotely independently plans their schedule and decides how much time to devote to studying.
  • The opportunity to study anywhere. Students studying remotely are not tied to a place or time, as they only need an Internet connection.
  • Study on the job from the main activity. Distance learning allows to work or study at several courses at the same time to get additional education.
  • High learning outcomes. Remote students study the necessary material independently, which allows them to better memorize and assimilate knowledge.
  • Distance learning is much cheaper, since it does not require expenses for accommodation and travel, as well as for a foreign passport if the university is located abroad.
  • Remote education provides a calm environment, as exams and communication with teachers are held online, which allows students to avoid anxiety.
  • Teachers who conduct remote classes have the opportunity to do additional things, cover a larger number of students, as well as teach while, for example, on maternity leave.
  • Remote learning allows teachers to use a more individual approach to their students, as well as to devote a sufficient amount of time to all students.

Experiments have confirmed that the quality and structure of training courses, as well as the quality of teaching in distance learning is often much better than in traditional forms of education. New electronic technologies can not only ensure the active involvement of students in the educational process, but also allow them to manage this process, unlike most traditional educational environments (Arthur-Nyarko et al.). During the implementation of e-learning programs, the following problems of distance education were identified.

  • Remote learning requires strong concentration and motivation. Almost all the educational material is mastered by a remote student independently. Remote classes require students to have perseverance and developed patience.
  • In the process of distance learning, it is difficult to develop interpersonal communication skills, since contact with teachers and other students is minimal.
  • In the process of distance learning, it is quite difficult to acquire practical skills, thus, specialties that require practical skills suffer.
  • The problem of user identification. It is difficult to track whether a student wrote their exam honestly, since the only way to check this is video surveillance, which is not always possible.
  • Insufficient computer literacy. In every country there are remote areas where there is no direct access to the Internet. Moreover, often the residents of such areas do not have any desire to learn, so it is necessary to spread computer literacy.

It is required to start by creating special Internet conferences and forums in schools that would guarantee the relative “live” communication of groups of students to deal with disadvantages (Chen et al.). It is also necessary to cooperate with traditional and distance learning, cooperation between teachers and students using a broad terminological and methodological base of psychology and pedagogy (Abuhammad). Despite all these problems, distance learning is very much appreciated by psychologists and teachers (Traxler). Nevertheless, the complete replacement of traditional education systems with similar ones-distance ones still causes some caution. One thing is indisputable – remotely studying students are more adapted to external conditions, are responsible and active, and therefore more successful in the modern business world.

Speaking about the distance form of education, it is necessary to talk about the creation of a single information and educational space. When it comes to distance learning, it is necessary to understand the presence of a teacher, a textbook and a student in the system, as well as the interaction of a teacher and students. It follows from this that the main thing in the organization of distance learning is the creation of electronic courses, the development of didactic foundations of distance learning, and the training of teachers-coordinators. It is not necessary to identify the distance form with the correspondence form of education, because it provides for constant contact with the teacher and imitation of all types of full-time training.

The dynamism of economic and socio-cultural processes in society causes changes in the field of education. Since the features of distance education are simply not acceptable for many students. Based on psychology and the methodology of independent learning, distance learning has some advantages and disadvantages. Summing up, we can unequivocally answer that distance education has a future. However, much depends on how quickly the problems of eliminating information illiteracy, technical equipment and improving the quality of e-education will be resolved. These factors arise during the implementation of remote scientific programs and projects. So, the factors and examples given above show the need to create and expand distance learning in the United States.

With technology, individuals are able to meet varying educational needs of varying students. Distance learning has in a way undermined face-to-face teaching and being in a class has had its magnitude of necessity minimized. It is a modern approach that delivers education in a different way eliminating the need for the student and the teacher meeting at the same place. The entire globe has identified the need for education and distance learning is helping that become a success.

Thesis Statement

Despite there being cons to this kind of education, the advantages and benefits that distance learning offers justifies that this is the way to go. There are massive distinctions between the distance learning environment and the traditional model of high school. These discussion will include considering and analyzing each of them (Dzakiria, 2012).

Expounding on Distance Learning and Traditional High School Education There is a major increase in the high school students that seek this kind of education. There is a category of youth who get into a business kind of life and still need education while there is an elderly group that due to varying needs decide to go back to high school. With such needs, distance learning is an indicator of developing a more learned global society. Discussed below is an elaboration of why distance learning should be encouraged further and mechanisms to minimize the available cons. Academic institutions have to evolve to ensure that they integrate distance learning into their programs to meet the rising educational demands and the specific personal plans that individuals have. The absence of the interaction between the student and the teacher is replaced by channels other than the conventional class room mode. Distance learning is a solace to those who may be conducting a tricky and busy lifestyle. Though this discussion will shed light on the benefits that distance learning places on the table, it is convenient at this juncture to indicate that this learning approach is feasible for everyone. These will be explained by analyzing the cons. The benefits include amongst others saving time and energy, the flexibility aspect, saving money, self-pacing, convenience, topic selection, comfort and easy access of information. The cons include the expenses, reduced motivation, over dependence on technology, low motivation, inappropriate learning environment and teacher figure absence.

Delivery of Distance Education

The existing channels of distance learning at the moment have increased. In some cases, postal delivery has been used in the past. Currently however, with the gradual and dynamic web based technology developments, the internet is the most used channel. With the internet in place, there are have been two modes for which distance education is delivered. There is the synchronous learning and the asynchronous learning. The synchronous involves the participants being present at the same time. It is like the traditional class room model only that the learners are located differently. It is thus based on a timetable in order to access the instructional television, educational television, web conferencing and videoconferencing. Others include telephone, live streaming and internet radio. For the asynchronous education, the students have all the freedom, they access the materials for their course with a lot of flexibility depending on their personal schedules. This indicates that the high school students do not have to be together at the required time. Under this model, the varying forms are mail correspondence, fax, voicemail, audio and video recordings, print materials, email and message board (Essel & Owusu-Boateng, 2011). These two models are in most cases incorporated to deliver the intended objectives more effectively.

Other limitations to this kind of learning include facts such as overreliance in technology meaning that individuals who have little knowledge on technology will be under privileged. To minimize on student laziness in this approach, there are fines, point’s reduction and other forms of punishment that students are faced with for failure to complete assignments on time or breaking of any other set rule and regulation. The educational bodies including the governments in all nations should advocate for distance learning so as the employers or citizens who still think it does not fully develop the student can have their perceptions cultured.

Distance learning will help accommodate this varying needs and demands. The end result is globalization of ideas through education. The traditional method has benefits and an environment that cannot be replicated. Distance learning therefore supplements the traditional method but in no way does it seek to replace it. Going by trends and the varying educational needs, distance learning is an approach for today and for the future as well. There are multiple reasons that make distance learning less reliable in comparison to traditional education systems. Initially it must be mentioned that distance learning has its own specific requirements. The very initial requirement is access to internet, due to the fact that, the whole communication and transfer of educational material is done by using webinars, live video chats, email and so on. Therefore, the student must also have adequate knowledge and ability to use different online services, which may cause problem for some groups of students, for example, the older group of students, which almost are not really good in using modern technology. This group is usually the main group of students, using distance learning due to the lower prices and lack of time, as they cannot usually afford to pay for university and/or cannot be present on lectures or classes during a specific time. The order reasons that reduce the reliability of distance learning include the lack of direct control of teachers on students, as in distance learning there is no direct or face to face contact between the teacher and students. In this situation, a student can never be impressed or affected by a teacher, and a teacher can never deal with a student in case he or she has any problems. The lack of direct and face-to-face contact reduces the process of growth and maturation, which is one of the major aspects of education. Lack of teamwork and cooperation. Beside lack of direct contact with teacher, the student will lose the contact with other students, which also is one of the disadvantages of distance learning. Being in contact and relation with other same age students greatly affects the growth and adaptation of the person to the environment. A student using distance learning will never feel the passion and joy of competition, the feeling that can improve the quality of learning in to a much higher level. The other disadvantage of distance learning returns to lack of direct contact again. One of the most important parts of a traditional classroom is the question and answer session, when a series of questions and answers are exchanged between the teacher and instructor, and even sometimes, it turns into a discussion. Finally, by involving the student in this process, the teacher can better lead the students to have a better understanding and approach, though this important part of the traditional classroom is totally removed in distance learning, as the students cannot see the lectures at the same time, so there wouldn’t be any question and answer and therefore there is no discussion. Possibility of cheating. For a student using distance learning, and in case the student is under the pressure of the personal life and education, it might be much easier to cheat and the due to the fact that the teacher has the minimum contact with the student it would be much harder to catch a student cheating.
