Best 8 Slideshare Alternatives & Sites Similar in 2024: Free and Paid

The name Slideshare speaks for itself – it’s a slide-sharing service that brings your PowerPoint presentations online so you can easily share them with your colleagues, clients and business partners. Although it is totally free, some will find its functionality limited and look for a similar service with additional features Slideshare lacks.

Comparison at a glance

All of the reviewed services are united by one feature: you should be able to upload your PowerPoint presentation on the web and get a link so you can share it. All the other features are present in some solutions but absent in the others. Here is a list of the functionality we paid attention to:

• Making presentations private or public
• Keeping animations and transitions intact
• Playing embedded voiceovers/audio files
• Playing embedded videos
• Viewing presentations on tablets and smartphones (with all the original effects)

1. Powershow.com

Powershow.com is essentially a database of presentations on various topics. It works exclusively with PowerPoint presentations and supports animations and embedded voiceovers (in .wav format). The maximum size of an individual presentation is 100MB with the unlimited number of total presentations. The subscription plan includes the following:

• Making your content private
• Restricted viewing date and time range
• Password protection and other security settings

A one-year subscription plan costs $99, while a one-month subscription is $25.

2. Authorstream.com

Besides PowerPoint Presentations and PDF files, Authorstream.com supports Apple Keynote presentations and uploads files from both desktop and web. The service can play audio and video files inserted on slides as well as animations. The original PowerPoint transitions, however, cannot be reproduced. After uploading your presentation, you can generate an embed code for it. Another prominent feature is the conversion of PPT to MP4 video of up to 5 minutes long (limited to 1 conversion on the free plan). The total free storage and the maximum size of one upload is 100MB. Basic statistics are also available here. Authorstream.com offers 3 subscription plans, which allow you the following:

The Pro, Business, and Team/Enterprise plans will cost you $4.20, $39.95, and $119.95+ per year, respectively.

3. Hashdoc.com

Hashdoc is a minimalistic service for storing all kinds of documents: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, text files, and even basic graphic files (SVG and DXF). It is also a document-selling platform – you can connect your Hashdoc account to your bank account and earn money. The only obvious downside is that your PowerPoints turn absolutely static – no animations, no transitions, no audio or video. The maximum size of one upload is 150 MB with unlimited storage space.

Hashdoc.com offers the following features:

• Sharing options
• Embedding option (iframe)
• Downloadable content
• Content and viewer statistics with graphics

The service is absolutely free — all the features will be available as soon as you register an account.

4. Docdroid.net

Docdroid is pretty much like Hashdoc, although you cannot sell your content and get statistics on it. Again, Docdroid turns your PowerPoint presentations into static PDF-like documents. Besides PowerPoints, you can host Word, Excel, text and PDF files. Apart from that, you will get the following:

• Downloadable presentations (as a PPT, PDF or ODP file)

Docdroid will cost you nothing – create an account and you are good to go.

5. Google Drive

Google Drive is one of the biggest file hosting services every Android and Chromebook user is likely to be familiar with, if not actively using. You can upload all kind of documents from your computer, mobile device or directly from the web, including PowerPoint presentations, and even create new ones. Unlike all the other big players in the consumer cloud storage market, Google Slides allows its users to edit PowerPoint presentations (the only other service able to do that from a browser is Microsoft’s own OneDrive). While Google Slides supports some animations and transitions, all the original ones from your PowerPoint will be changed once you upload the .ppt to your Drive account. You also lose the embedded audio and video files. So once you upload a presentation and download it afterwards, it might be completely different due to the change of transitions and animations, and the absence of any embedded media. On mobile devices the presentations lose all these elements. The maximum size of one upload is different for each format: for a PPT file it is 150 MB, and the total storage space is 15 GB for the free plan.

Among other features are:

• Sharing options (with commenting or editing restrictions)
• Embedding option (iframe) with a configurable slideshow
• Downloadable content (in various formats)
• Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, iOS and Android apps

Since Google Drive is primarily a file storage service rather than a file sharing one, its only fee-based option is storage space extension starting with $1.99 per month for 100GB.

Dropbox offers 2.5GB of free storage space for hosting any kinds of files. The limit for one file size is 2.5GB as well. Once uploaded, the slides become completely static.

The following options are available:

• Sharing options (with commenting)
• Downloadable content (in original format)
• Password protection (with the Pro account)
• Content expiration dates (with the Pro account)
• Admin control and users (with one of the Team accounts)
• Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Windows Phone apps

The Pro account costs €8.25 per month and gets you 1TB, and the Team account prices start at €10 per month for one user and get you 2TB for the whole team.

7. OneDrive

OneDrive is a file hosting service from Microsoft with integrated online Office editors. Their functionality is limited, but is enough for the most basic tasks. Although only three transitions are supported, the majority of existing animations will be reproduced. On mobile devices, however, your content will turn static. You can also start a presentation from scratch since OneDrive is closely integrated with PowerPoint Online as well as with the other Microsoft online editors. While there is a 10GB limit for one uploaded file, the free storage plan includes only 5GB of space.

The service has some other relevant features, including:

• Android, iOS, macOS, Microsoft Windows apps

Storage plan prices start at $1.99 a month for 50GB. With the Premium plan (starting at $69.99 a year) come a subscription to Office 365 and 1TB online storage.

Box.com is integrated with Microsoft Office Online tools and Google Docs. After you upload a presentation, you will be able to edit it live, or you can create a new one and automatically save it on your account. However, even if your presentation has audio and video elements, animations or transitions, you won’t be able to see them outside of PowerPoint Online. The free Personal Plan gets you 10GB of storage space with a 250MB file size limit.

The other features are:

• Password protection (with a paid plan)
• Link expiration date (with a paid plan)
• Android, iOS apps

The Personal Pro plan with 100GB storage and 5GB limit per single file costs €8 a month.

Which service to choose?

The answer to this question depends entirely on your needs. Since Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box are file hosting services at their core, they work best with bigger files and three of them even have some editing options. They also have great features for collaborative work on files in big teams – commenting, editing, and revision history.

Hashdoc.com and Docdroid.net are great tools for professionals who want to privately or publicly share (or even sell, in the former case) their PowerPoint files, and need only text and images on their slides.

Powershow.com and Authorstream.com are more like presentation databases, but with a subscription plan you can make your presentations private and even apply security settings. You also get your presentations almost in their original form, but only on desktop. Only Authorstream.com shows the static slides, while Powershow.com presentations become entirely unavailable.

Hey, thank you for a great overview! Have never heard about Zoho Show and Knovio, need to check them out 🙂 From my side I can also say that Slideflight is also worth mentioning. It’s very young company from Germany, but the product itself is just great and so easy-to-use 🙂 You can share your Power Point presentation with your audience, so it’s a nice thing for students

Know of some free services similar to slideshare, issuu, etc.. that’s just focused more on cool/creative ways to present or embed pdfs and presentations for websites rather than focusing on businesses or selling stuff? Seems like everything’s all about money these days. Just recently Issuu started letting premium-users sell publications and they cut back on the free-users features, for example, you used to be able to upload I think up to 20 pdfs at a time and now you can only upload 1 at a time which be tedious.

I don’t need help building – I just want to upload to a private link and share with a specific set of slides with the audience from an event. I am having trouble login into my SlideShare account. I get logged out, my session ends and I can’t upload and share my slides. I also don’t see where I am being billed anymore. Everything is a Linked in premium. Is anyone else having trouble accessing and uploading slide documents? I don’t mind paying, I want to share my slides with my audience when I leave. I am being forced to do Dropbox.

In 2016, SlideShare had over 70 million unique visitors per day, and it was listed by Alexa as one of the top 100 most visited websites in the world. At its peak, it was such a powerhouse that Obama used the network to post his birth certificate. It also stood for years as a premier B2B social channel: In 2015, author and marketing expert Jay Baer referred to it as " content marketing's secret weapon ."

However, just a few months ago, Baer changed his tune, penning an article titled " LinkedIn Is Ruining SlideShare ."

It's not just Baer. Power users have been dropping the channel left and right.

Top content creator and SlideShare investor Dave McLure hasn't posted to the channel in over 11 months. HubSpot, the content marketing powerhouse that posted over 60 presentations in 2017 and reached over 500,000 users, has posted only once in 2018, reaching a total of just over 1,000 users.

So what has caused this exodus of power users and decline in social-media prominence? A perfect storm of shifting parent-company priorities, insufficient revenues, and a user base largely outside of the US.

Despite SlideShare's massive fan base, loyal users, and billions of impressions, it was a storm too great. A once-powerful channel is all but dead, and here's why.

Loss of SlideShare's Humanity

The rapid growth of SlideShare from a small startup to a top website began in 2009, in a tiny room in India, when Amit Rajan, Rashmi Sinha, and Jonathan Boutelle saw the need for a "YouTube for presentations." Within a few years, they had built a network of 38 million registered users by providing a desperately needed tool—and a new social channel for presentations.

But the key to their success wasn't the tool, it was the human touch it added to the presentations.

SlideShare didn't have a marketing team fueling its rapid growth. It relied on loyal fans. Its fans were the content creators, and to ensure the best content was featured, the team at SlideShare would manually curate the site each day, ensuring that the best presentations were prominently featured.

Kit Seeborg, author of Present Yourself: Using SlideShare to Grow Your Business , was responsible for most of the content curation the users loved. When I spoke with her, she stressed how important human curation was to SlideShare: "It took me six months before I was allowed to curate the homepage on my own. [Co-founder] Amit and I would spend hours going over what should be featured." Kit even proposed automation via a curation feature, to which Amit simply responded, "We are not a magazine."

The curated content was a huge hit. It was also one of the drivers of SlideShare's email list, which, at the time of LinkedIn's acquisition of SlideShare in 2012, was growing by 250,000 new subscribers each week . After the sale to LinkedIn, the curation process remained a critical part of community-building, until 2016, when the program was ended. Since then, the homepage has changed very little, which was a major clue to marketing insiders that LinkedIn was giving up on SlideShare.

During 2016, the team of editors who had been curators for SlideShare were moved off the product to support other LinkedIn projects, such as Pulse. The SlideShare company page on LinkedIn is now blank, with only a few remaining engineers listed as employees. The SlideShare Twitter handle, @SlideShare, has posted only once since 2016—advising people to stop following @SlideShare and begin following the new handle @linkededitors, the Twitter handle for Pulse content.

The Death of Key SlideShare Features

Beginning in 2017, a group of SlideShare power users began noticing another serious issue. The SlideShare team had removed the critical reupload feature from the product.

What may seem like a trivial feature, allowing users to simply replace an existing presentation with an updated version, was a critical feature for any organization or user.

Imagine you post a presentation, and notice you have a typo (broken URL, misspelling, etc.) and want to fix it. The reupload feature was the only way to do that while maintaining the backlinks necessary for modern marketing. It was a simple yet necessary feature for content marketers and others.

The removal of that one feature sparked an uproar among fans, and many marketing leaders derided the change. Author and speaker Carla Johnson called it "a poor decision that clearly shows they don't understand their audience. I loved that feature."

After multiple attempts to reach LinkedIn about that issue, with multiple questions about when a fix would be coming, I was finally given the following statement:

"LinkedIn continuously evaluates how features and products are used and makes adjustments accordingly to focus our resources on providing the most value to our members. After careful assessment, we can confirm that we will not be moving forward with a fix at this time for the slide reupload feature.

"Please know that we are actively working on making foundational improvements to our platform and appreciate your feedback. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

LinkedIn has cut its staff, and that statement is just one more proclamation confirming its abandonment of SlideShare.

The lights may be on, but nobody's home.

Not Enough Revenue

From the beginning, SlideShare was about allowing a community of people an easy way to upload and share great content. The only problem was, it wasn't easy to monetize.

In a recent interview, co-founder Amit Rajan told me that when LinkedIn purchased SlideShare for $118 million in 2012, his company was at only break-even revenue. Even as the company continued to grow, it struggled to find a significant revenue source for one key reason: a large international audience.

Despite its beloved status with many content creators, the vast majority of SlideShare's traffic is from outside the US. In fact, only 8.7% of SlideShare's total traffic is from the US, and Rajan confirmed that the US has always accounted for a small portion of traffic to the site.

That makes the social audience hard to monetize when targeting ads to US-based businesses, which are LinkedIn's core demographic.

LinkedIn could have easily found ways to increase SlideShare's revenue streams, yet it likely lost focus after the acquisition of Lynda for $1.5 billion in 2015, the rolling out of Pulse, and its 2016 acquisition by Microsoft for $26 billion.

The amount of money that could have been made from SlideShare was likely not enough to move the needle for the larger organization, so it simply let SlideShare go.

SlideShare Is Dead, but Presentations Aren't: Alternatives

During our recent conversation for this article, Rajan said there still is a need for a tool like SlideShare, and that sentiment rings true with many who once used the tool. Its users are sad and confused about how our beloved channel was abandoned because it didn't make enough money.

But that's the way the business cookie crumbles. So what are we to do?

Here are some possible alternatives:

• Own your content. There are new plugins for websites, such as Speakerstack , which allow you to host your slides on your own website and allow easy sharing and embedding. Options such as that also allow for JavaScript to be attached for tracking and lead-generation purposes.
• Microsoft may create a social PowerPoint for 365. That is speculation, but now that LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, and with the recent move to put Office in the Cloud, we could potentially see a new social aspect of PowerPoint in the future. Just don't hold your breath. There are new startups, such as SlideCraft and EDOCR, trying to re-create the social aspect of slides along with an updated feature set. All of those are speculative and may or may not work out.
• Use Prezi. It's an alternative to SlideShare, but it does require you create content in Prezi's own software rather than in PowerPoint; that requirement can be a pain for some.

As we are continually bombarded with new marketing channels, tactics, and tools, one thing is clear: Slides are not going away. Events seem to give brands the personal touch the digital world just can't, and slides are usually the No.1 content type at events.

In my case, I'll be moving all my slides to my personal website so I don't have to worry about third parties, and I'll have better control over my content.

It's a shame LinkedIn couldn't find a way to make SlideShare work, deciding instead to abandon all 70 million of its users. It's time we all say goodbye, too.

Rest in peace my friend. It was good while it lasted.

Is SlideShare Dead?

SlideShare is an online presentation service that launched in 2006 and was purchased by LinkedIn in 2012. The platform originally focused on digital slideshows, hence the name, but eventually added support for the uploading of files created in other programs and the embedding of LinkedIn videos to create more dynamic presentations.

SlideShare is kind of a combination between a social network and an online learning resource. Anyone can create a presentation on the SlideShare website , sometimes referred to as "SlideShare net", while those that make high quality and popular creations, such as comprehensive webinars , can often gain a large following.

Projects made on SlideShare can be posted privately or publicly on the platform. If a project is published on SlideShare publicly, SlideShare users can like or comment on it and share it on social media or by embedding it on a website. Presentations can also be downloaded for offline viewing on the official SlideShare iOS app and SlideShare Android app.

What You Can Use SlideShare For

SlideShare is mainly known for being an educational resource with a variety of webinars and training presentations on a large number of subjects. Despite this main focus, though, SlideShare is also used by many to promote brands or companies and some even use it as a blogging or newsletter service for their website.

Due to the added support for PDF files , PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word documents, some users also use SlideShare to distribute files to friends, colleagues, or subscribers.

Here are some of the most-popular ways to use SlideShare:

• Online webinars and training programs.
• Website newsletters.
• A visualization tool for presentations.
• Promotional or marketing slideshows.
• Travel guides and cookbooks.

Is SlideShare Free?

It’s completely free to view presentations on the SlideShare website and apps. It’s also free for all users to upload or create projects on the SlideShare website.

The SlideShare website does heavily promote LinkedIn Learning slideshows and courses. These are not free and require a monthly LinkedIn Learning subscription to access.

How SlideShare Login Works

While slideshows and presentations can be viewed without logging into SlideShare, an account is needed to leave comments, like slides, follow accounts, and download media.

SlideShare actually supports three different account options which can all be used via the Login link on the main SlideShare website.

• Login with LinkedIn : This lets you log into SlideShare with your existing LinkedIn account.
• Login with Facebook : This option allows you to use SlideShare with your Facebook account.
• Login with your SlideShare account : This option is for those who still have an old SlideShare account from before LinkedIn purchased the brand back in 2012.

In general, logging into SlideShare with a LinkedIn account is recommended as the two services have become intermingled to the point that you’ll often find yourself on the LinkedIn website while using SlideShare.

How to Create a SlideShare New Account

If you select Signup on the main page or Signup for a SlideShare account from the Login page, it will actually prompt you to create a LinkedIn account, not a separate SlideShare account. This is completely intentional, as the creation of new SlideShare accounts are no longer supported for the average user.

An option to create a SlideShare account for a company or university is available, however, but all individuals are recommended to use LinkedIn.

Even if you’re a sole trader or a freelancer, you should still use SlideShare as an individual with a LinkedIn account. The company option is mainly intended for large corporations and organizations.

The SlideShare website and apps are technically all still active, but the service is no longer as popular as it used to be. Nowadays, it’s rarely seen as a primary focus for either individuals or companies with the majority of SlideShare’s most-popular presentations having been created several years ago and the website being used more to drive traffic to paid LinkedIn Learning courses rather than support user-created content.

The SlideShare apps also seem to be on their way out having only been updated once or twice a year since 2016.

One of the main reasons for SlideShare’s decline is the success of numerous rival online educational platforms like Lynda, which powers LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy. Unlike SlideShare, which is mostly restricted to basic free slideshows, these other services feature more multimedia functionality and also allow creators to earn money from their webinars and courses.

The increase in usage of cloud storage services, such as Google Drive , OneDrive , and Dropbox , which provide easy solutions for file sharing and viewing, have also likely had an effect on SlideShare user numbers, as has the continued popularity of YouTube , which many educators now use for free education channels, video tutorials , and online marketing.

Net neutrality restored as FCC votes to regulate internet providers

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday voted to restore “net neutrality” rules that prevent broadband internet providers such as Comcast and Verizon from favoring some sites and apps over others.

The move effectively reinstates a net neutrality order the commission first issued in 2015 during the Obama administration. In 2017, under then-President Donald Trump, the FCC repealed those rules.

The measure passed Thursday on a 3-2 vote split along party lines, with Democratic commissioners in favor and Republicans opposed.

Net neutrality effectively requires providers of internet service to treat all traffic equally, eliminating any incentive they might face to favor business partners or to hobble competitors. The public interest group Public Knowledge describes net neutrality as “the principle that the company that connects you to the internet does not get to control what you do on the internet.”

The rules, for instance, ban practices that throttle or block certain sites or apps, or that reserve higher speeds for the services or customers willing to pay more for them.

“In our post-pandemic world, we know that broadband is a necessity, not a luxury,” FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement ahead of the vote.

While it’s been almost seven years since the FCC killed the previous net neutrality rules, their reinstatement isn’t expected to noticeably change users’ online experience. Public Knowledge legal director John Bergmayer credits that to several states having passed their own net neutrality measures prior to 2015, all of which remained in force when the FCC reversed course two years later following Trump’s election.

“Some of the absolute worst excesses from (internet providers) were kept in check by state level oversight,” Bergmayer said.

States like California went even further than the FCC did — for instance, by banning a practice called “zero rating.” That’s where, for instance, a mobile provider might strike a business deal to steer users toward a particular streaming service by zeroing out any related data charges. Other states with strong net neutrality rules include Colorado, Maine, Oregon, Vermont and Washington, according to Bergmayer.

The telecommunications industry opposed the reintroduction of the federal rules, as it has before, declaring them an example of unnecessary government interference in business decisions.

Former Qantas boss Geoff Dixon used to regale clients and investors with a standing joke every time another domestic airline went under.

The Australian market, he reckoned, was only big enough for one and a half airlines.

The one, obviously, was Qantas. And the half was whichever foolhardy group attempted to take on the goliath of the Australian skies with its not so discreet backing from the Australian government. 

He had a point.

A quick look through Wikipedia reveals almost 300 defunct Australian airlines since we took to the skies last century.

Many were tiny regional operators, a few were amalgamated into bigger regional operators such as Rex — which has hung in there with thrifty management from its Singaporean owners — and a handful had grander ambitions that blew up in spectacular style.

Bonza, the latest upstart to come a cropper in one of the world's most cutthroat aviation markets, never really stood a chance.

It hit turbulence early on, even in the ideas stage as the pandemic wreaked havoc with airlines globally and international travel ground to a halt.

Officially launched by former Virgin Blue executive Tim Jordan early last year, the new operation quickly became known as Bogan Air, and played up to the image with planes bearing monikers like Bazza and Shazza.

Behind the scenes, even before it got off the ground, Bonza struggled to work its way through the regulatory maze, battled Qantas and Virgin for slots at airports and found it difficult to hire experienced staff.

Then there were the usual operational problems inherent with starting any new business. Luggage delays, flight cancellations and communication issues.

But perhaps its biggest obstacle was self-imposed. In a bid to differentiate itself from its bigger rivals, it forged a plan to service mostly regional centres that the others didn't frequently service.

And, unlike Rex's reliance on relatively low cost turboprops to service its regional routes, Bonza chose to do so using expensive, larger capacity jet airliners.

Mildura, Mackay, Port Macquarie direct from major centres like Melbourne sounded like a great idea. Clearly, it didn't work in practice.

A mere 15 months since launch, reports began circulating that the operation wasn't paying its way and that its American parent had delivered ownership of the airline's 737 Max aircraft to its creditors.

On Tuesday, passengers arrived at airports across its network to discover all flights had been cancelled.

Bazza and Shazza join a not so exclusive party

Bonza's short life in Australian skies isn't unusual.

Three decades ago, Compass Airlines launched with all the hoopla you'd expect from a group attempting to become the third wheel in Australian aviation. It lasted a year.

The following year, it was relaunched. It failed soon after.

But then, in 2002, the seemingly unthinkable happened. Ansett Airlines, the second wheel in the Australian aviation industry collapsed. Founded by Reg Ansett, it had been around since 1936.

Ansett's demise cemented Qantas's position as the dominant player and two years later it took out another rival, Impulse, in a deal that embroiled one of the country's best known stockbrokers, Rene Rivkin, in an insider trading case.

That left the field open for the launch of Virgin Blue. But even it struggled to survive. Years of heavy losses were borne by a well heeled group of foreign airline shareholders who needed a domestic carrier through which to funnel their foreign visitors.

The irony behind the sad history of Australian aviation is that the Sydney-Melbourne route is one of the most lucrative in the world and provides both Qantas and Virgin with more revenue than any other.

The COVID pandemic was the final straw for Virgin Australia, which fell into administration in April 2020 , but has since been resurrected by American private equity group Bain. It now reportedly turns a profit but its return to the bourse has been delayed.

Along the way there were other collapses, such as Tiger Air — once funded by Singapore Airlines — and Strategic Air.

The writing may have been on the wall for Bogan Air from day one. But that probably won't douse the ambition of some other budding entrepreneur donning the aviator glasses within a year or two.

If only you could make half an airline work.

National Testing Agency, NTA has started the registration process for CSIR UGC NET June 2024 Exam on May 1, 2024. Candidates who want to apply for Joint CSIR-UGC NET Examination June-2024 can find the direct link on the official website of CSIR UGC NET at csirnet.nta.ac.in.

The last date to apply is till May 21, 2024. The payment window will available from May 22 to May 23, 2024. The correction window will open on May 25 and will close on May 27, 2024.

The examination will be conducted on June 25, 26 and 27, 2024. The Test will consist of three parts. All the parts will consist of objective type, multiple choice questions. There will be no break between papers.
