PurposeDespite the institutional calls to include the development of non-technical skills as objectives in accounting curriculum and the attempts to do so, a gap between the level of skills exhibited by graduates and those needed to succeed as a professional is still perceived. One of the possible causes could be students' overconfidence, defined as a very optimistic assessment of their own abilities. This paper explored the authors concerns about students enrolled in their introductory accounting course. Anecdotal evidence suggested that students struggle with basic arithmetic concepts that underlie basic business transactions even though their math placement and ACT scores are high. A survey of 125 students in a first accounting course was conducted in the spring of 2010 to assess the basic arithmetical skills. The results indicated that the ACT scores and math placement tests do not reveal weakness in basic arithmetic. We find that faculty and students will experience frustration due to the impaired arithmetic ability. By taking for granted that students possess basic skills in arithmetic faculty will exclude exercises from the curriculum that will build the kind of arithmetic abilities students need to think on their feet about basic business transactions. This study aims to explain the factors that can influence the students at the University of Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya in understanding accounting as a form of knowledge. Determination of samples uses the purposive sampling method and resulted in 60 respondents. This study collected samples of seventh semester accounting students who are submitting their undergraduate final assignments, and the sample have fulfilled the required accounting courses. Not all of the variables analyzed influence the level of understanding of accounting. The variable of Social Intelligence, the variable of Learning Behavior, and the variable of Academic Culture are proven to have influence on students’ understanding of accounting. The variable of Motivation and Self-Esteem have no influence on the students’ level of understanding on accounting.

This study analyzes emotional intelligence, lecturer teaching style, and accounting understanding through motivation and learning behavior. The sample in this study was 239 respondents. Data is processed using SEM path analysis. This study indicates that motivation plays a vital role in teaching and learning success, as measured by understanding accounting. Good emotional intelligence can produce the right motivation. Competent and productive lecturers will be able to foster student motivation to produce high levels of understanding.

This study assessed the self-perception of the selected Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students on their academic, social and their emotional college preparedness. The students’ demographic profile was also tested for significant difference in the three constructs of the college preparedness. Through a self-made questionnaire in a 4-scale Likert style, data were gathered from the 255 randomly selected ABM students of one private higher education institution in Batangas Province in the Philippines. Self-perception showed a college-prepared student academically, socially and emotionally. However, there are various constructs of their academic and social-emotional preparedness that need further improvements. The statistical test of significance indicated that the various constructs of academic, social and emotional preparedness have no difference by age, type of school, family income and order of birth. A significant difference was shown in the respondents’ sex and social preparedness but not on academic and emotional preparedness. Similarly, there was significant difference in the various constructs of academic, social and emotional preparedness in terms of the students’ GWA in high school. For this, high schools should develop collaborative teaching and learning strategies focus on reading and writing. In addition, colleges and universities may provide pertinent course information through their websites to guide the students on the various details of their chosen undergraduate courses. Indeed, to prepare students for college alone is insufficient; a college-ready student should complete a degree with a life-ready perspectives.

There were three academic variables identified as affected by improper budgeting of allowance, such as the students’ attendance, performance, and school-related expenses.
