Grad school recommendation letters are an essential part of every graduate school application package–even in this (almost) post-COVID era of remote work and Zoom classes. Nearly all applications to graduate school still require at least two recommendation letters from individuals who can discuss your abilities, competencies, and personal character in a coherent way and recommend you for admission to graduate school.

Many referees have difficulty writing these recommendations themselves (for language issues or simply because they are busy) and some rely on the applicant to pen the draft of the letter and receive confirmation before submitting it to the graduate school. Who should write a recommendation letter for graduate school?

Choosing which professors, supervisors, or advisors to request a graduate school recommendation letter from can be somewhat overwhelming. Should you choose someone who does not know you personally but who has connections to your target graduate school? If a famous professor writes you a grad school recommendation letter, will this automatically give you an advantage with the admissions committee? 

In general, graduate recommendation letters should come from people who know you well, who respect you enough to say glowing things about you as a student and researcher, and who hold positions in school or work that are above your own. At least one letter of recommendation should be submitted from a past or current professor or academic advisor. 

Another could be from someone in a slightly different role, including an employer, a research adviser, a senior colleague, or a professor from a different department or kind of class (e.g., a discussion class professor instead of a lecturer). No matter who it is, the recommender should know the applicant and recognize their accomplishments. It also helps if the recommender understands some details about the program to which their candidate is applying.

Here are some guidelines to follow when choosing who to ask for letters of recommendation for graduate school. Select someone who:

  • Knows you well and can answer positively. Choose an individual who you have spent time with outside the classroom if possible. They should also be familiar with your career goals and hold a favorable view of you. 
  • Has known you for quite a while. A recommendation letter for graduate school carries more influence if the person has known you for months or years instead of months. If you can, find someone who knows you from various contexts, such as a professor who is also your advisor. 
  • Can speak to your strengths in relation to your graduate program. Choosing a finance professor to write your recommendation letter for an MBA program would be a good idea because they can write about the qualities that will aid you in pursuing an MBA (qualities you can also include in your MBA essay ) and a broader career in business. 
  • Has substantive stories to share about you. Who was fortunate enough to see you succeed in an academic, extracurricular, or professional setting? Having someone write your LOR who has good stories to share about you is certainly going to benefit you more than someone whose class you took with two hundred other students. 

How to Request a Letter of Recommendation for Graduate School

Knowing how to request a letter of recommendation for graduate school can directly impact the quality of the letter your referee writes for you. Show respect and consideration for the time that your recommender is taking to write a glowing review that will get you into graduate school and positively impact the rest of your life. 

With this in mind, it may seem obvious that the very best way to ask for a letter of recommendation for graduate school is to do so in person. While this isn’t possible for all students (due to availability or schedule), it is the best route if you want to ensure that your LOR is not only written on time, but includes all the positive information about you that admissions committees want to see in a graduate candidate. When you cannot ask in person, sending an email is an appropriate second-best option. But remember to always be cordial and polite when making this request.

Your referral letter should cover a range of skills, from academic abilities to research experiences, to applied experiences in and out of class. As the recommender, your letter should clearly answer some specific questions:

  • Why should the graduate faculty listen to your opinion? (include your status, title)

  • What makes this student qualified for graduate school and for this program? (include specific courses or interests of the student in addition to abilities and traits)
  • What do you know about the program the student is applying to?

What information does the LOR recommender need from me?

The recommender should be given sufficient time to write (and/or confirm) the letter. If it has been a while since you were last in contact, sending a background information file will make things easier. Include the following information so that the recommender can use a few details to bolster their letter:

  • Classes the student has taken with the recommender
  • Experiences you have shared
  • Transcripts
  • Research experience and internships
  • Awards and achievements
  • Academic/career goals
  • Relevant professional experience

In addition to background information, make sure that the recommender has the necessary information to plan the writing in a timely manner and target the letter as much as possible:

  • Graduate program application due date
  • Copy of recommendation forms (if applicable)
  • Instructions for submitting LORs (hard copy, soft copy, or direct to school)
  • Details about the program and school the student is applying to

What style of writing should be used in a recommendation letter?

Although the letter of recommendation is more informal than academic writing, you should make sure that your language has no grammatical or mechanics errors and that it is of an academic level that reflects the author’s educational level and qualifications. Apply the following standards to the writing and the essay-drafting process:

  • Make your language more personal in tone than research writing.
  • Use the active voice and first-person point of view more often.
  • Write chronologically, starting from important traits and then moving on to actions and achievements.
  • Use lots of details—list course names, scores, and specific achievements of the student.
  • Edit your letter before submitting it to the graduate admissions faculty.

How to Write a Grad School Letter of Recommendation Letter: LOR Outline

A well-structured recommendation letter (like any organized essay) will guide the reader logically towards an understanding of why this student is worthy not only of praise but of admission to graduate school. Grad school requires quite a few high-level scholastic attributes that not all students possess, and therefore it is important to focus on both the achievements of the candidate and on their personal character and potential to thrive in a difficult academic environment.

Use this outline as a letter of recommendation template in which to input your candidate’s achievements, skills, and traits. Note that the flow of information moves the reader into greater detail, using form phrases and transitions that increase the readability of the letter.

How to write a letter of recommendation for grad school

When someone asks you to write a graduate school letter of recommendation , it demonstrates that they value your opinion, trust you and believe in your writing skills.

But as flattering as it is to be asked, there is also some pressure associated with crafting an effective and convincing letter of recommendation. After all, the applicant is counting on you to influence the admissions board and highlight their accomplishments, strengths and skill sets.

The good news is, writing a graduate school letter of recommendation is more intuitive than you think. Below, we’ve rounded up all the tips you need to write the perfect letter for anyone in your sphere.

What Is a Letter of Recommendation?

First off, let’s go over what a letter of recommendation is.

A letter of recommendation is a brief, written endorsement needed for certain jobs, programs or schools that details a person’s qualifications for whatever they’re applying for.

It’s written by a trusted and valued source: usually a past employer, teacher, mentor or colleague. In a letter of recommendation for graduate school, the writer describes the person’s skills, their personality and why they’re the right fit for the program. This is all so the institution has confirmation of the applicant’s ability to succeed in the program.

If you don’t believe you’re the right fit to write a student’s recommendation, that’s OK, too. You can politely decline and explain to the student why. You can also offer to help them find someone else who’s a more appropriate choice.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Writing a Letter of Recommendation for Grad School

Once you’ve decided to accept and write the letter of recommendation, take a moment to consider some key questions before you begin crafting your statement.

  • What is your relationship like with this person?
  • What do you think of their work you’ve seen? How would you describe it?
  • What are significant memories you have with them?
  • What qualities or strengths does this person have?
  • What would you specifically want somebody to know about this person?
  • What value would this person bring to this grad school program, and how would they thrive in the field after the program?

What to Ask From Someone Before Writing a Letter of Recommendation

Of course, there is some student information you’ll want to obtain before starting your recommendation. To ensure you’re addressing all the right points and representing them in the best light possible, make sure you ask them the below questions.

The basics . First off, you should find out where this letter is going, to whom it should be addressed, what the deadlines are and how they’d like you to submit it (mail, email, etc.).

Why they want to go to this program and why they are drawn to this school . It’s important to know the motivation behind their graduate school studies: Is it for the love of learning? To get a better job? To switch fields altogether? This will help inform what you write in the letter. Similarly, it’s good to know why a specific school is calling them as well.

Any strengths or qualities they want highlighted . Each person will have different qualities they want you to discuss in their letter of recommendation. If the strengths they mention are ones you agree with and seem relevant to the degree program, definitely include them. You should also ask about what achievements they’ve made that will help them stand out from the crowd of applicants.

Their resume . No one can memorize a person’s entire job and education history. A resume can help remind you of special projects and exemplary work they’ve accomplished in the past, which you can then emphasize in your letter.

What to Include in a Letter of Recommendation for Grad School

There are specific things you should always include in a letter of recommendation for graduate school to make it shine and improve the applicant’s chances of admission.

These are the points that you must undoubtedly touch on throughout your recommendation:

How do you know the applicant? It’s important to describe who you are and how you know the applicant, as well as how long you’ve known them. Personal anecdotes are a must, and they boost your credibility.

Why are they a good fit for the program? Include an explanation for why you think they would specifically thrive in the program. Avoid being vague or general. Dive into why the school would be the perfect fit, and vice versa!

What are their most shining accomplishments? Describe their achievements, especially the ones you’ve personally witnessed. In addition, reference their top strengths and qualities. Again, avoid generalities and use vivid anecdotes.

Can you explain any gaps or discrepancies? A letter of recommendation is often a good time to clear up any troubling parts of the student’s resume or work history — perhaps there was an employment gap or grades dip because they were caring for a sick relative, for example. If you’re aware of any weak spots on their resume from extenuating circumstances, this is the time to note it.

What sets the applicant apart from the rest? Be sure to conclude on a strong note with a very clear, concise recommendation. Highlight what sets them apart from other people, so the program can clearly understand why they should admit this candidate into their college or university.

How to Format and Structure a Graduate School Letter of Recommendation

As for structure, letters of recommendation should not be longer than a page. Start off with a greeting (“Dear [Name]” or “To Whom It May Concern,” if you don’t know the recipient). In the opening paragraph, explain who you are, the nature of your relationship with the student and your overall impression of them.

Within the body of the letter, you can expand on their personality, skills and achievements — along with personal anecdotes — before wrapping up with a final strong and clear recommendation for the applicant.

Then, feel free to add in a polite offer to contact you if they need more information and a formal parting signature. Double-check for spelling and grammar, too, as any mistake could weaken your credibility.

Once you’ve proofread the letter, all you have to do is submit it as instructed and patiently wait for an update from the applicant. Best of luck!

Letters of Recommendation from Dr. Hirsh

I am happy to support good students pursuing research experience, jobs, graduate school, and special academic programs and honors.  A typical letter of recommendation will describe your performance in the classroom, the laboratory, and/or research, how you interact with your peers, how you interact with the instructor and support staff, and a description of those personal attributes and characteristics that relate to the position or program that you are pursuing.  The better I know you, the easier it will be for me to write a meaningful and supportive letter.

Many students contact me for letters of recommendation.  So that I can accommodate as many students as possible, I require all students to follow these guidelines.  A student wishing to receive a letter of recommendation from Dr. Hirsh:

1)      has received a grade of “B” or better in one of his courses or is one of his advisees.

2)      contacts Dr. Hirsh in person or by e-mail at least  one month  before the application deadline to find out if he is able to support his/her application.

3)      has narrowed his/her search to no more than 8 schools or 10 summer programs.

4)      provides Dr. Hirsh with a single complete list of programs, deadlines, and mailing or web addresses, as appropriate.   Get form here .

5)      provides Dr. Hirsh with a resume and personal statement.

6)      meets with Dr. Hirsh during office hours for 15 minutes to discuss his/her goals in applying to the programs, graduate schools, etc.

Items 4), 5), and 6) should be taken care of at the same time, if possible.

 Confidentiality

All letters of recommendation are treated as confidential.  This means that you waive the right to see them so that I can write an honest and complete appraisal.  In general, all letters will be sent directly to the program requiring them, they will not be given to you.  That is why I request item 4) above.  If a program requires that letters of recommendation be mailed with the application, I will give you a letter in an addressed and sealed envelope with my signature across the seal.

Before applying, confirm that three faculty members or others qualified to evaluate your potential for graduate study have agreed to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf. At least one letter should be from a faculty member at the school where you earned your most recent degree, unless you have been out of school for more than five years. 

Your recommenders must submit their letters through the recommender portal by the application deadline: Harvard Griffin GSAS does not accept letters submitted via email, mail, or a dossier service. 

During the application process, you will be asked whether you wish to waive your right to see these letters. By law, enrolled students have the right to view their letters of recommendation unless they indicate otherwise at the time of application. Can I submit my application before my recommenders submit their letters? 

Yes. Please remember that letters of recommendation must be received by the graduate program’s application deadline. 

How many letters of recommendation can be included in my application? 

Harvard Griffin GSAS requires three letters of recommendation. You may ask additional recommenders to submit letters if you choose, however, it is not guaranteed that the admissions committee will review additional letters. 

What if my recommender is unable to submit a letter in English?

If you have a recommender who is unable to submit a letter in English, they can choose to obtain a certified English translation of their letter. The recommender would need to upload a copy of their original letter in the language it was written, a copy of the English translation of the letter, and verification from the professional translator certifying the translation. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original record. Harvard Griffin GSAS does not endorse a specific translator or translation service.

  • We encourage (but do not require) applicants to report scores for the GRE general and GRE chemistry subject tests. Applicants who feel that GRE scores support their case are welcome to include them. Our application review process is holistic, and the Graduate Admissions Committee believes that standardized test scores represent only one piece of a candidate’s profile. Applicants for whom taking the GRE presents a burden or who feel it does not represent their skills are free to not include them.

Please submit all application materials (including letters of recommendation) by December 15, 2023 to receive full consideration. Those applying to the Vivien Thomas Scholars program must apply by December 1, 2023. Although additional materials submitted past this date will still be considered, the graduate admissions committee will commence reviewing applications on December 15th, 2023.

There are no fixed requirements for admission. Undergraduate majors in chemistry, biology, earth sciences, mathematics, or physics may apply as well as all well-qualified individuals who will have received a BA degree before matriculation.

Vivien Thomas PhD Scholars

The Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI ) is an endowed fellowship program at Johns Hopkins for STEM PhD students. It provides full tuition, stipend, benefits, targeted mentoring, and professional development. Students who have attended a historically black college and university or other minority serving institution for undergraduate study are eligible.

There is no additional application. To be considered for the VTSI, all components of the PhD application, including supplemental components, special VSTI questions, and letters of recommendation must be completed by December 1, 2023 , even if the program deadline is later.

Nathaniel Boggs Memorial Fellowship

The Nathaniel Boggs, Jr. Ph.D., Memorial Fellowship was established in 1999 by university trustee Paula Boggs, A&S ’81. It’s in memory of her father, who received Howard University’s first Ph.D. in biology. The fellowship provides a substantial stipend to the awardee.

Candidates for a fellowship must have an undergraduate degree from a historically black college or university, and pursue graduate work in select fields within the natural or physical sciences. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their academic performance, including GPA. 

Fields of study include biology, biophysics, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, mathematics, and physics and astronomy. Interested candidates should contact their prospective department to inquire about the fellowship.

Kelly Miller Fellowship

Kelly Miller was the first African-American student to enroll at Johns Hopkins in 1887. He left the university before he completed his graduate degree, but later became a longtime professor of mathematics at Howard University, and a dean of arts and sciences. Students who have attended a historically black college and university or other minority serving institution for undergraduate study are eligible.

The fellowship provides a stipend for the first two years of the student’s program, and a research fund to be used in the course of the fellow’s graduate career. There are currently 10 fellowships available per year.

Relocation Funds for Incoming Graduate Students

We recognize that it can be financially burdensome to relocate to a new city to attend a Ph.D. program. Students who are accepted to Ph.D. programs at JHU can apply to receive a $1500 need-based grant to offset the costs of relocating to JHU.

These grants provide funding to a portion of incoming students who, without this money, may otherwise not be able to afford to relocate to JHU for their Ph.D. program.

This is not a merit-based grant. Applications will be evaluated solely based on financial need.

  • Graduate Application Information

APPLICATION DETAILS

To apply: Applications and all required application materials should be submitted directly to the Purdue Graduate School through an Application Account . To find information about the logistics of submitting your application online, visit this page . Please do not send any application materials directly to the Chemistry Department faculty or staff unless a document is requested by the department. Faculty and admissions staff will not be able to review or comment on application materials that are not submitted through the Graduate School online application system. 

Complete applications: We will not review or consider partial applications. A complete application includes all required components (see below), including the letters of recommendation. The application fee must be paid or waived by the Graduate School for the application to be considered complete.

Application timing:  The priority application deadline for our Fall 2024 Ph.D. program will be December 1st, 2023 . Completed applications submitted by December 15th, 2023 will also receive consideration. 

Applications submitted by exceptional candidates after December 15th, 2023 might be considered, but a review is not guaranteed. 

Entry Date: Except in very unusual circumstances, all students joining the PhD program will start at the beginning of the fall semester. Students who apply for spring or summer admission will be asked to amend their application for fall admission. The fall semester typically starts in early- to mid-August.

Admission Decisions: We release decisions as soon as they are available. The Graduate Admissions Committee reviews the majority of applications from November through January. Our goal is to have most admissions decisions shared with applicants by January 15.

ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY

Undergraduate studies: Applicants should be on track to complete at least a Bachelor’s Degree prior to matriculation in our program. We accept and consider applications from students with a wide variety of undergraduate majors; it is not required to have an undergraduate degree specifically in Chemistry. It is recommended that you have a minimum of 35 semester hours of undergraduate credit in chemistry courses as a basis for graduate work. These 35 hours should include the basic undergraduate courses in general chemistry, quantitative analysis, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry.  In addition, the student should have credit in mathematics through integral calculus and one year of physics.  Additional courses in mathematics and physics are desirable.

Master’s degree: A Master’s Degree is not required for admission, and several students begin our program directly after completing a bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.). However, it is typically required that you complete the program in which you are enrolled when you apply. The graduate school will require a final and official transcript showing the degree earned, preferably before you arrive on campus or register for courses.

Grade Point Average: For admission consideration, your grade point average from the most recent degree (undergraduate, graduate, or professional) must be at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent from a different grading system; we are aware that many international universities use grading scales that may not be directly proportional to a US 4.0-scale, and will take that into consideration in our review of applications).

APPLICATION COMPONENTS

Complete application: A complete application must include the following:

  • Create an Application Account and answers to applicable application questions
  • Transcripts from all universities that you have attended since you began your BS degree program (single courses that you may have taken in a non-degree program while you were still in high school do not need a transcript).
  • At least three letters of recommendation
  • An academic statement of purpose
  • A personal history statement
  • A resume or CV
  • English Proficiency Scores (International students only)
  • Application fee received, or waiver from the Graduate School granted

Transcripts: You must upload to the online application transcript(s) and/or academic document(s) for every institution of higher education you attended. If a transcript is not in English, you must upload an English translation certified by the college or university which issued it.

The uploaded transcript and/or academic document must be from the official version of the document. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. An unofficial transcript printed from your current/previous institution(s) student system is not an acceptable document.

All transcripts and/or academic documents uploaded to the online application system are considered unofficial. You will need to provide official transcripts and/or academic records at the request of the graduate program or if you are admitted and choose to enroll. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. All applicants are advised to review the Graduate School's Submitting Transcripts page for additional requirements and information related to transcripts. Applicants who have previously attended international universities should also visit The Graduate School's Documents Required by Country page as they may be required to submit additional academic credentials.

Letters of Recommendation: The Chemistry Department requires at least three letters of recommendation. Your letter writers should send the letters directly to Purdue: in the application process, you will list names and contact information of letter writers, and then Purdue will reach out to them directly with instructions for submission. We strongly recommend that at least one of these letters come from someone who supervised your research efforts, and who can comment directly on your research experiences and/or potential. This includes research done while you were an undergraduate, or during a graduate level program, or during employment. Your references should also be persons who can assess your academic potential such as faculty members, academic staff, supervisors, industry leaders, employers or advisors. You have the option to submit more than three letters of recommendation. However, if you have more than three letters, please be aware that the Graduate School’s application system does not automatically forward applications to Chemistry once the third letter is received. Instead, the system waits until all letters are received. If you would like to have your application reviewed with three letters – before a fourth or fifth is received – you will need to reach out directly to the Chemistry Department so we can manually move your application forward. The Graduate School strongly encourages you to provide reference email addresses that are affiliated with an academic institutions, professional organization, or employer.

Academic Statement of Purpose: Your Academic Statement of Purpose is a critical part of your application; it should clearly convey your academic interests, experiences, motivations, and potential. This essay provides a valuable insight for the faculty evaluating your application. The statement should be approximately 500 words, and should address the following topics:

  • What are your professional plans and career goals? How will attending graduate school assist you in reaching those goals?
  • Describe your research, scholarly, or creative interests. What topics are of particular interest to you? Reviewers know that interests change over time but try to be as specific as possible.
  • Discuss how your experiences, skills, and abilities have prepared you for graduate study. Relevant topics may include coursework, work and research experiences, internships, presentations, exhibits, publications, and community service. If you describe a research or scholarly experience, include information on the topic, research mentor, your role, and outcomes.
  • Describe how your skills, preparation, and interests are a match for the Chemistry P.h.D Program. Identify faculty who share your research and scholarly interests. Reviewers will want to know that you have researched the program, faculty, and key focus areas.

Information in the Personal History Statement should complement but not duplicate information in the Academic Statement of Purpose.

Personal History Statement:  The Personal History Statement helps reviewers learn more about you as a whole person and as a potential graduate student. This may include relevant details on community service, leadership roles, participation in diverse teams, and significant barriers that you overcame to attend graduate school.

All applicants' Personal History Statements should:

  • Describe how your background and life experiences contribute to your ability to be both persistent and resourceful in graduate school.
  • Describe how your life experiences have prepared you to contribute to an academic community where scholars with diverse research interests, abilities, backgrounds, and experiences are supported, respected, and valued.

Applicants also have the option to:

  • Address concerns that you may have that your academic record does not reflect your true capabilities and discuss mitigating factors that have affected your academic record. Reviewers will be interested in understanding your accomplishments relative to your opportunities.

Resume or CV: You should submit a resume or CV as part of your application. A resume or CV allows you to present a brief, complete picture of your experiences and accomplishments.

English Proficiency Scores: English Proficiency Scores may be required for international students. Please see below for details on scores, acceptable tests, and potential waivers.

Application Fee: For all Purdue Graduate programs, a non-refundable application fee of $60 (for US citizens and permanent residents) or $75 (for international students) is required. There are some opportunities for waivers, either for attendance at certain recruitment events or (for US Citizens and Permanent Residents) with a request for an economic hardship waiver. Other common questions about application materials:

  • GRE: Purdue Chemistry does not consider GRE scores, either General or Subject test, as part of the graduate application. If you have taken the GRE, please do not send scores. Other supporting materials: Applications are reviewed holistically, so you have the option of adding other supporting materials that may help the admissions committee understand your experiences and potential. Including other supporting materials is optional. Supporting materials should be brief; the faculty on the committee are not likely to read entire articles.
  • Area of Interest: The application asks you to select one of eight areas of interest within Chemistry: Analytical, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Inorganic, Materials Chemistry, Organic, Physical, or Theoretical. Please select the area closest to your goals and interests. This is not a binding selection (once students are admitted to the program, they are free to pursue any area of research), but it does help us ensure that faculty reviewing your application will be experts in your particular area of interest.
  • First Choice and Second Choice Program: The Purdue Graduate School application allows you to apply for up to three different Purdue programs. All timely applications listing Chemistry as the first or second choice will receive full consideration from the Chemistry Graduate Admissions Committee. Applications listing Chemistry as the third choice may or may not receive full consideration from Chemistry, depending on timing, application quality, and departmental needs.

APPLICATION REVIEW

Chemistry Graduate Admissions Committee: Once your application is complete, the Graduate School will release it for review by a panel of chemistry faculty. These professors will make recommendations to either admit or deny your application, and will also make recommendations for potential Fellowship offers.

Review timing: The Admissions Committee completes the bulk of the reviews between November and January. Applications completed prior to the December 1st deadline may be reviewed early, and students will be notified as soon as an admission decision is final. Our goal is to have the majority of the decisions made and communicated to students by mid-January.

Notification: If the Chemistry Graduate Admissions Committee recommends admission, we will notify you via email. The email from the Chemistry Department will include details of a financial support offer. We will also contact you if there are any issues with the application that need to be addressed before the Graduate School can make a formal offer of admission. Notification will be delivered to the email address that you provide in your application. Unless a paper copy is requested, admission letters and financial support information will be provided only electronically.

Responding to an offer: Students receiving an offer of admission and financial support will be asked to respond to the Graduate School, through the application website, no later than April 15. If you accept our offer, we also ask that you sign to accept the terms of the financial support offer by that date. If you accept an offer from another program, we request that you to let us know as soon as possible.

AFTER ADMISSION

Open House Weekends: US-based students receiving an offer will be invited to one of our in-person Graduate Open House Weekends. During this visit, students will have the chance to interact with the Chemistry Department faculty, students and staff. Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to a stated limit (usually sufficient to cover airfare for those living in the USA, but insufficient for overseas trips). Details will be provided following your admission.  Dates for our 2024 Open House Weekends will be February 9-10, 2024 and March 1-2, 2024.

Virtual Open House: Our Virtual Open House event is open to international and domestic students who have received an offer of admission. The 2024 Virtual Open House will take place on  February 20th, 2024 . Through February and March, there will also be opportunities for virtual visits and events. Attendees have a chance to attend an informational session and Q&A to learn more about our program, engage with our research groups through an interactive virtual poster session and talk to our Graduate Student Advisory Board about our community and grad. student life at Purdue. 

Summer start: If you accept our offer, students may also have a chance to work in a paid position in certain labs during the summer (we call these “zero-year” research opportunities). For US citizens and permanent residents, this is administered in a way similar to summer undergraduate research opportunities. For international students, visa requirements mandate that we update your starting term from Fall to Summer. This can take significant time, so international students interested in a zero-year opportunity should contact us as soon as possible.

OTHER INFORMATION

Financial support: Offers to incoming PhD students include financial support for a period up to 5 years from the date of admission, presuming satisfactory progress and performance. This support may be in the form of a Teaching Assistantship or a Research Assistantship; the exact appointment may change every semester at the discretion of your eventual major advisor. Support typically includes a full tuition waiver (some fees are still assessed), and a monetary stipend. The time commitment is up to 20 hours per week.

Fellowships: The Department and the Graduate School offer a number of competitive fellowships for exceptional students throughout their graduate career. A limited number of one or two year fellowships will be offered to new graduate students selected for Fall 2024 admission. We award these incoming fellowships based on the standard application; there is no need for an additional fellowship application. Students on fellowships may elect to supplement their income by teaching on a limited basis.

The MS program: Purdue Chemistry typically admits students only into the PhD program. An exception is granted for US military veterans and active service applicants who are fully funded by scholarships or other military programs, and are seeking an MS degree. Applicants who apply for an MS program but do not fall into the aforementioned categories will be asked to amend their applications.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

English Proficiency Exams: If you come from a country in which English is not a primary language, you must submit TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores from a test in English competency. TOEFL iBT, iBT Home Edition, and TOEFL Essentials are all accepted. Standard IELTS (Academic Module) and Duolingo scores are also accepted, but TOEFL Indicator scores are not acceptable.  To be valid for admission, English proficiency test scores (TOEFL and IELTS) must be no more than two years old at the time the recommendation for admission is received at the Graduate School. 

Minimum Scores: The table below shows the minimum scores for the Chemistry PhD program for TOEFL and IELTS. Note that some of these minimum scores are higher than Purdue Graduate School minimums.

* Exceptional applicants with a TOEFL speaking sub-score of 22 may be considered.

Duolingo:  The Chemistry Department's required minimum Duolingo subscores are as follows: 130 for Production; 130 for Conversation; 115 for Literacy; and 115 for Comprehension. The Chemistry Department's minimum total test score requirement is 115.  Note that some of these minimum scores are higher than Purdue Graduate School minimums .

Repeat examinations: If you have more than one set of scores for these exams, Purdue will consider the subscores associated with the test date of the highest overall score. You may not combine subscores from two different test dates to create a higher overall score.

Waiver for BS or MS degree from an English-speaking country: International students who are not from predominantly English-speaking countries, but who have earned (or will earn) a BS or MS degree from a university in an English-speaking country, where the predominant language of instruction is English, within 36 prior to the application date, may request a waiver for English Proficiency scores. This waiver is not automatic, and we may ask to see unofficial TOEFL or IELTS scores from when you started your program in an English-speaking country. This waiver is approved by the Chemistry Department; to request a waiver, please email [email protected] once your application has all components complete other than the English proficiency requirement and the fee payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the application deadline.

The Chemistry Department admits students on a rolling admission basis. However, applications submitted on or before February 1st will receive priority during the admissions review cycle. We do not refuse applications that are not complete at the deadline, however, a significant delay in submitting application materials could affect your chances of being admitted.

If you wish to be considered for a UConn Graduate School Fellowship (Jorgensen Fellowship, Harriot Fellowship, or Crandall Fellowship), you must submit your application and have all materials uploaded in the Graduate School's application system by January 1st. 

Are GREs Required? What is the cut-off score?

No, the GRE general and GRE subject scores are not required.

I can’t find a recommendation form on your website. Where can I download this form?

The Chemistry Department does not offer a form for letters of recommendation. Please ask your recommenders to submit their letter through the online application recommendation system. Once you enter their name and email address into your application, they will receive an email link to upload their letter. The Chemistry Department does not accept paper recommendation letters.

I am interested in a Ph.D. degree, but have not yet earned an MS degree. Can I apply to the Ph.D. program?

Yes, you do not have to have an MS degree before enrolling in our Ph.D. program.

My cumulative GPA is below a 3.0. Can I still be admitted to your program?

The Graduate School requires all applicants to have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for the entire undergraduate record, or 3.0 GPA for the last two years, or excellent work in the entire final year (at least 3.5 GPA). The grade point average is computed on the basis of the following scale: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. Applicants from foreign colleges and universities must meet equivalent standards of eligibility and are expected to submit official transcripts showing all work completed. All advanced post-Baccalaureate course work is considered as well.

I have a BS degree in Biology/History/Education, etc. and I want to enroll in the Chemistry MS or Ph.D. program. Will you accept me?

In order to qualify for admission to our graduate program, we require all applicants to have the following undergraduate courses:

  • General chemistry - 2 semesters, plus lab
  • Organic chemistry - 2 semesters plus 1 semester of lab
  • Physical chemistry - 2 semesters plus lab (including all prerequisite requirements of Calculus 1 and 2, multi-variable calculus, and differential equations and 2-3 semesters of physics)
  • Analytical chemistry - 1 semester (2 semesters plus lab recommended)
  • Inorganic chemistry - 1 semester (2 semesters plus lab recommended)

Can I earn an MS or Ph.D. degree part-time?

Yes, you can earn an MS or Ph.D. degree part-time. However, we do not offer classes at night or on the weekends,. In addition, you are not eligible for an assistantship if you are a part-time student.

I want to work for a specific professor. Can I be admitted directly into his/her research group?

Yes, if this adviser will guarantee your financial support and he/she agrees to admit you directly into his/her research group. Otherwise, all graduate students are admitted under the advisement of the Graduate Admission Committee (specifically Dr. Angeles-Boza for Fall 2022) and are required to choose a major adviser by the end of November (for fall admits).

My friend/sister/spouse applied to your department. Can you tell me their application status?

No, due to the University's privacy policy, we cannot provide information to you about someone else's application.

When will I be notified if I was admitted or not?

Application decisions will be sent out in early March. Official notifications will be sent by the Graduate School. Once an official decision has been made, the applicant will receive an email asking them to log on to the online application system to view the decision.

The graduate program in chemistry provides students with a solid foundation in chemistry, while recognizing that solutions to many important problems require interdisciplinary training. Students in our program have the opportunity to learn techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and/or theories from multiple disciplines as the background in specialized knowledge necessary to advance fundamental understanding or solve problems.

Applying to the Program

Applications traditionally open on August 1 each year. The fee for an application is $95 unless granted a fee waiver via the department. Complete applications submitted by Dec 1, 2023 will receive an automatic fee waiver. Applications received during December, but still by the final deadline of January 1, will require payment of the application fee, unless a special fee waiver has been provided. The FINAL application deadline is January 1, after which point no applications will be accepted.

We use a holistic review process and take into account your grades (particularly in STEM coursework), GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. Our aim is to determine how you and your goals fit into our research environment. A Ph.D. in chemistry is a research degree. As such, meaningful research experiences are particularly important to the review committee. This can be in the form of undergraduate research, summer research experiences (such as NSF REUs), or internships. Recommendation letters from your research mentors are very valuable.

Qualifications

Applicants should have worked, or be currently working, towards an undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical biology, or have completed equivalent 35 hours of the basic undergraduate courses in general chemistry, quantitative analysis, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Relevant research experience is strongly recommended.

In order to complete your application to join the graduate program of chemistry you will need to include all of your most up-to-date academic transcripts , a minimum of three letters of recommendation, a Statement of Purpose , and any additional documentation you wish to submit. The GRE is not required for admission into the program. For international students, English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) is required.

Your Statement of Purpose should highlight your academic history, research experience, career goals, and a general review of the importance of chemistry and how it impacts you and your future goals.

Application deadline:  The deadline for submission of applications is  December 29, 2023 . All applications must be completed by this date, including transcripts. Letters of recommendation must be submitted by January 7, 2024 .

  • Transcripts:  You will upload a PDF of your transcripts from all universities that you have attended. You will not mail your official transcripts to USC until you are accepted to the program.
  • Previous Research Experience (2 pages maximum):  In the field provided or in an uploaded PDF, describe your previous research experience. State the big-picture goals of your research, as well as your specific role, and any major accomplishments. In response to the challenges of teaching, learning, and assessing academic performance during the global COVID-19 pandemic, MIT has adopted the following principle: MIT’s admissions committees and offices for graduate and professional schools will take the significant disruptions of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 into account when reviewing students’ transcripts and other admissions materials as part of their regular practice of performing individualized, holistic reviews of each applicant.

In particular, as we review applications now and in the future, we will respect decisions regarding the adoption of Pass/No Record (or Credit/No Credit or Pass/Fail) and other grading options during the unprecedented period of COVID-19 disruptions, whether those decisions were made by institutions or by individual students. We also expect that the individual experiences of applicants will richly inform applications and, as such, they will be considered with the entirety of a student’s record.

During the active admissions cycle you must submit your application via the Online Application . Paper applications are not accepted by the Department of Chemistry. Applications for Fall 2024 admissions are now closed. Applications for Fall 2025 will open on September 15, 2024. Please see below for helpful information about our application requirements.
