A Parent's Guide to Fourth Grade Skills and Success

Fourth grade basics, fourth grade reading, writing, and math, helping your fourth grader.

In fourth grade, children's social lives begin to get more complicated and the academic demands they face grow as well, but parents can help them through this crucial year by identifying the reading, math, and science skills required to master the grade level.

This fourth-grade guide for parents offers tips on helping children deal with cliques , heavy backpacks, and more.

  • What You Can Expect in Fourth Grade : Here's a brief overview of what you can expect in your child's fourth-grade year.
  • What Do Kids Learn in Fourth Grade? : Kids learn a number of new things in fourth grade, both socially and academically. Just as the formation of cliques begins to increase and complicate your child's social life, the academic ante is upped as well, requiring a student to not only to be responsible for their own work but to effectively work in groups as well.
  • Signs of Learning Difficulties   in Fourth Grade : Fourth grade is a year when children are expected to take on new challenges, and it's important to be on the lookout for signs of trouble. Such signs vary, but if your child is consistently showing trouble in any of the areas covered here, it's a good idea to check in with their teacher or pediatrician for a closer look.
  • Fourth Grade Science Topics: Your fourth grader will tackle physical science, Earth and space sciences, and biology this year.
  • Books for Students Entering Fourth Grade : By the time your child is ready to enter fourth grade, they not only have a good grasp on the rudimentary skills required for reading and comprehension, but they've also been introduced to a number of different genres during third-grade reading. Add some poetry and folk legends to their library.
  • The Forgiving Method of Long Division : Some teachers are using a new technique known as the Forgiving Method of Long Division. Learn how to help your child with this math homework.
  • Order of Operations : Many parents last took algebra years ago, making it hard to give children the math help they need. The most important thing to remember is that your child does the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in the right order.
  • Math Games Online : These websites offer a variety of fun online math games that encourage the development of addition, subtraction, and other math skills.
  • Fourth Grade Math Course of Study : The Common Core State Standards Initiative details some basic concepts that should be mastered by the end of the fourth grade school year.
  • Fourth Grade Science Fair Project Ideas : According to science writer Anne Helmenstine, PhD, "Great fourth-grade science fair projects involve answering a question, solving a problem or testing a hypothesis."
  • Questions to Ask Your School About High-Stakes Tests : Even if you know a lot about the mechanics of high-stakes tests, you should pose questions to school district officials about which ones schools use and why.

Lawmakers OK bill to put decision on holding back 4th graders in hands of schools, parents

fourth grade homework

A bill leaving decisions on holding back thousands of fourth graders affected by Tennessee's controversial reading law up to schools and parents passed the state legislature on Thursday.

A lesser-known part of the reading law would have held back up to 6,000 fourth graders this year, according to a projection from the Tennessee Department of Education. The newly passed bill removes that mandate. The Senate voted to pass the bill 27-3. The House voted 82-3.

It now heads to Gov. Bill Lee's desk. The governor has 10 days to sign or veto the bill, excluding Sundays. If he takes no action, it will be come law without his signature.

Here's a rundown of what changed and what's next for fourth graders statewide.

What to know: How Tennessee reading law affects third, fourth graders

What changed for fourth graders in the Tennessee reading law

The state's reading and retention law requires third graders who fall short on state reading benchmarks to meet exemption standards, pass on a retake, enroll in summer school or win an appeal. Additionally, students who score as "approaching" proficiency could enroll in tutoring for the entirety of fourth grade — something around 12,000 students opted into for the current school year.

The previous version of the law required those fourth graders to be held back if they did not pass the English language arts section of Tennessee's standardized test or hit an individualized growth goal set by the state. The newly passed measure states a district or public charter school must call a conference with the student's parent or guardian, English language arts teacher and school principal if those children fall short.

The conference will determine one of the following things:

  • Promote the child to fifth grade with interventions and academic supports in place, including tutoring
  • Retain the child in fourth grade

The decision came down to the wire as the nearly four-month legislative session reached its conclusion Thursday night. While the bill drew wide bipartisan support, lawmakers initially disagreed on specifics. They struck a deal in a last-minute conference committee on Thursday ahead of the final floor sessions for the House and Senate.

What's next for Tennessee third, fourth graders

Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) tests kicked off April 15 for grades 3-5 and will conclude by Tuesday. Exact testing dates vary by district.

Scores are typically released in two waves over the summer and early fall each year. However, the Tennessee Department of Education will release some scores and data early for third and fourth graders affected by the reading law.

English language arts scores for third graders will be released to districts on May 20 and growth data for fourth graders will be released by July 1. It will be up to districts to relay information to parents and legal guardians.

Tennessee reading law: Bill that would hold back fewer fourth graders still in limbo

fourth grade homework

A Tennessee bill that could curb how many fourth graders are held back under a state reading law remains in limbo over a disagreement between the House and Senate.

The reading law requires third graders who fall short on state reading benchmarks to meet exemption standards, pass on a retake, enroll in summer school or win an appeal. Additionally, students who score as "approaching" proficiency could also enroll in tutoring for the entirety of fourth grade — something around 12,000 students chose for the current school year.

But if those fourth graders do not pass the English language arts section of Tennessee's standardized test or hit an individualized growth goal set by the state, the law requires them to be held back. The Tennessee Department of Education projected that up to 6,000 fourth graders may be retained if nothing changes.

What to know: How Tennessee reading law affects third, fourth graders

The proposed bill seeks to put that decision back into the hands of schools and parents, with tutoring requirements if the child moves on to fifth grade. The House version also adds a reading screener test as a second benchmark to consider in retention decisions, along with a summer school option.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

While the measure has drawn wide bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, lawmakers can't agree on the exact terms of the bill.

After volleying between the two chambers several times, it will likely head to a conference committee where lawmakers will attempt to reconcile their differences over the measure. With the end of the session nearing and several other high-profile bills at play , it's not clear if the two chambers will negotiate a deal.

The disagreement comes as standardized Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program tests are being administered for grades 3-5 statewide.

Haley Eason, a Williamson County mother whose 11-year-old daughter Myleigh is in fourth grade, said the wait is excruciating as her daughter takes her TCAP this week. She said her daughter is a straight-A student but has struggled on the test, which put her at risk of retention last year. They opted for tutoring. Now Myleigh is facing the risk of retention once again.

"I just don't understand when everyone pretty much seems like they are for a change, and we keep going back and forth," Eason said Wednesday. "I'm just really frustrated."

Key K-12 bills to watch in 2024: Tennessee lawmakers take on education

Where the House and Senate disagree

Both the House and Senate versions of the bill leave retention decisions up to school leaders and parents or legal guardians and include language on tutoring in fifth grade. A district or public charter school must call a conference with the student's parent or guardian, English language arts teacher and school principal to determine one of the following things:

  • Promote the child to fifth grade with interventions and academic supports in place, including tutoring
  • Retain the child in fourth grade

But a Senate amendment by Sen. Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol, limits the measure to only two years, meaning this year's fourth graders and those in fourth grade in the 2024-25 school year would benefit from it. He said the intent was to focus on children whose early schooling was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. That means the original version of the reading law would go back into effect for the 2025-26 school year.

Lundberg has voiced opposition to the measure in the past, and ultimately voted against it Wednesday, even though his amendment passed.

That amendment was one of the reasons House sponsor Rep. Gary Hicks, R-Rogersville, ultimately rejected the Senate version of the bill Thursday. He also cited the following disparities in the Senate bill:

  • No consideration of a reading screening test as an additional benchmark in retention decisions
  • No choice for parents between summer school and tutoring for their child to avoid retention
  • The high cost attached to using TNAllCorps tutoring for fifth graders

Children cannot be retained in fourth grade more than once, according to the reading law.

Changes to Tennessee’s 4th-grade reading law pass after compromise on retention policy

Two people stand in front of Tennessee state seal and two flags.

Sign up for Chalkbeat Tennessee’s free daily newsletter to keep up with statewide education policy and Memphis-Shelby County Schools.

Parents of Tennessee fourth graders would have input on whether their children get held back because of low reading test scores, under compromise legislation that’s headed to Gov. Bill Lee’s desk.

The legislation also provides additional tutoring to students who advance to the fifth grade, even if they didn’t test as proficient readers or show adequate improvement in grades three and four.

The Senate and House agreed on the provisions Thursday to address longstanding concerns about Lee’s 2021 reading and retention law, which threatens to hold back an estimated 6,000 struggling fourth-grade readers.

Under the current law, which Lee proposed , fourth graders who don’t score well enough on state tests have to repeat fourth grade, and receive no additional learning supports and resources during that year. But legislators said that wasn’t their intent when they voted to strengthen retention requirements for third- and fourth-graders during a special session to deal with disruptions to schooling from the pandemic.

The governor signaled later that he will sign the bill.

The legislature’s vote came on the final day of a 2024 legislative session that began in January — and nearly two weeks after students began testing under the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, or TCAP, which the state uses to determine reading proficiency.

Educators and families called the timing of the bill’s passage ironic, given that lawmakers have received pushback about the law for several years.

“They could have saved many fourth-grade students and their parents a whole lot of anxiety if they’d passed this earlier,” said Michael Ramsey, an instructional coach for Grainger County Schools, near Knoxville.

Different versions of the bill passed last week out of the House and Senate. When neither side backed down, they turned to negotiators to reach a compromise.

Both chambers were in agreement about directing the child’s parent or guardian to meet with the teacher and principal to discuss whether it’s in the child’s best interest to be promoted or held back. But on Thursday, negotiators added that the parent won’t make the final call. The majority will rule.

The final bill also sets TCAP scores as the only promotion criteria, and tutoring as the only required intervention for advancing.

The House bill, sponsored by Rep. Gary Hicks of Rogersville, would have let schools take into account the results of a local benchmark test too. And it would have allowed families to choose between participating in a summer learning program or tutoring in fifth grade if promoted.

But in a concession, the Senate, where the bill was sponsored by Dawn White of Murfreesboro, agreed to drop its insistence that the changes take place for only two years. That provision likely would have required lawmakers to revisit the law in 2026.

This is not the first time the legislature has revised the law.

Last year, when the statute’s retention provision kicked in for third graders, lawmakers widened criteria to include both TCAP and benchmark test results to determine which third graders are at risk of being held back.

Third grade is considered a critical year for reading because literacy is the basis for all subsequent learning.

But there’s a growing consensus among Tennessee policymakers that third grade is too late to identify and help struggling readers.

Last month, in a rare action, the state Board of Education approved a resolution asking the legislature to refocus the state’s intervention efforts on grades as early as kindergarten.

Eagles 2024 NFL Draft grades: Philadelphia adds Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Michigan guard, in fifth round

All the eagles picks and draft news in one place.

anias-smith.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles are entering a pivotal draft, looking to improve a roster that lost six of seven to close the season. The Eagles have a few needs at key defensive positions, as they are searching to reshape the defense in Vic Fangio's system.

While the most pressing needs for the Eagles are cornerback, linebacker, safety and an additional edge rusher on defense, the Eagles could search for more depth at wide receiver, pick a long-term replacement for Lane Johnson at right tackle, and find a starting right guard early in this draft. Philadelphia signed its productive young players to long-term extensions this offseason, searching for the next group of players to join a core group that has already been to a Super Bowl .

The Eagles added Saquon Barkley , Bryce Huff  and brought back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to highlight the free agent signings. Now the attention turns to the draft to restock its roster with productive starters, especially with Quinyon Mitchell at No. 22 and Cooper DeJean at No. 40. The Eagles, who have made a record number of trades in this year's draft, also moved up in the second round and back in the third round twice, stockpiling picks on Day 3.

This is a pivotal time for the Eagles, so you won't want to miss a second of the action over the three-day spectacle. Here is every single selection the Eagles own for the 2024 NFL Draft:

Round 1 (No. 22 overall): Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

Mitchell was the first cornerback taken in the NFL Draft, falling to the Eagles at No. 22 overall. Setting school records for passes defended in a season (25) and career (52), Mitchell has the athleticism to match up with any receiver in man or zone coverage. He had 43 passes defended and 6 interceptions over the last 27 games he played.

Mitchell is a Day 1 starter in the NFL and should challenge for a starting spot immediately, even with Darius Slay and James Bradberry there. He had the most passes defended in FBS (37) over the past two seasons.

Pete Prisco's grade: B+

"The Eagles wait and get the best corner in this draft. That's smart. There was talk of them trading up, but now they land a player who fills a need with age creeping into their defense. Nice pick."

Round 2 (No. 40 overall): Cooper DeJean, Iowa

The Eagles traded up to No. 40 and selected DeJean out of Iowa, a player they originally coveted at No. 22. They traded both their second-round picks (No. 50 and No. 53) and a fifth-round pick (No. 161) to move up 10 spots in the draft. The Eagles acquired the No. 40 pick (which they used to select DeJean), a third-round pick (No. 70) and a fifth-round pick (No. 152) from the Commanders.

DeJean is a hybrid player in the secondary who can play outside cornerback, the slot and safety. While the Eagles are settled at cornerback on the outside with the selection of Quinyon Mitchell, DeJean can play the slot or line up next to C.J. Gardner-Johnson at safety in 2024. He'll have a major role in the secondary.

DeJean only allowed one catch of 15-plus yards last season and is rarely out of position. He also had 3 pick-sixes last season for the Hawkeyes and is an excellent gunner on special teams. The Eagles have a do-it-all player.

Chris Trapasso's grade: A

"Howie Roseman strikes again. DeJean is a fine tackler, dynamic athlete who can align anywhere and provides plus return ability. Fills a need in this secondary that needs reworking."

Round 3 (No. 94 overall): Jalyx Hunt, Houston Christian

The Eagles traded back twice in the third round to settle on Hunt, another big edge rusher at 6-foot-4 and 252 pounds. More of a developmental prospect who can get bigger, Hunt can learn in a pass rush behind Bryce Huff, Josh Sweat, and Nolan Smith.

A former safety, Hunt has a closing burst that is excellent at showing up quarterbacks. He needs more moves on the edge, but will get bigger with more time in the weight room.

Chris Trapasso's grade: B-

"Former Cornell safety turned small-school dominant edge rusher with tantalizing traits. Showed impressively advanced hand work despite being new at the position, but still a work in progress. Size, length, burst, bend are there. Will take time to acclimate to better competition. Pick is all about upside."

Round 4 (No. 127 overall): Will Shipley, Clemson

The Eagles get a No. 2 running back behind Saquon Barkley in Shipley. A former five-star recruit at Clemson, Shipley shines in the screen game and had 33 rushing and receiving touchdowns for the Tigers over the last three years. Injuries affected his production, but Shipley makes defenders miss on his cuts. Also an excellent kick returner as well.

Chris Trapasso's grade: C+

"Jack of all trades master of none. Works diligently between the tackles and has decent wiggle. Not overly elusive. Speed is a plus. And he's very useful out of the backfield as a receiver."

Round 5 (No. 152 overall): Ainias Smith, Texas A&M

Listed as a wide receiver, but he's more of a "gadget" player. He can be used to carry the football on outside zone runs or sweeps and doesn't play outside receiver much. Nearly 70% of his snaps came in the slot in 2023, which may be where he fits in Philadelphia. Another outstanding returner as well.

"Experienced, older prospect with YAC juice and plus contact balance. Slot, possession type and plays bigger than his shorter size, but he comes with a compact frame overall. Catch radius is very tiny. Will take time to become a quality route-runner. Gadget-y type in college. Dynamic honed skills."

Round 5 (No. 155 overall): Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Clemson

The son of Eagles legend Jeremiah Trotter -- and Philadelphia native -- stays in Philadelphia. Trotter plays like his father in terms of how he attacks the ball carrier, but has limitations in coverage. He has the natural fit as a MIKE linebacker and Trotter Sr. has always claimed his son is better than him. The younger Trotter will be a fan favorite.

"Young, super-smart reasonable athlete at the off-ball LB spot. Speed can be special once he gets into top gear. Blitzing is a speciality. Active but not someone who plays at full throttle every play and tackling reliability could improve. Knows how to defeat blocks en route to the RB. What I love most are his ball skills and coverage chops underneath and at intermediate level."

Round 5 (No. 172 overall): Trevor Keegan, Michigan

A left guard for the Wolverines who is physical at the line, Keenan is aggressive off the snap. He didn't allow any penalties last season and is strong at run-blocking technique. Depth piece for Philadelphia on the offensive line.

Chris Trapasso's grade: D+

"Limited athlete at guard but has plenty of experience and run-blocking skill. Best blocking in phone booth. Has minimal range but does have good burst off the ball. The speed just stalls almost instantly. Aware of stunts and blitzes, just can't always get there. Too early for him but I understand adding OL depth on Day 3."

Round 6 (No. 185 overall): Johnny Wilson, Florida State

An outside receiver at Florida State, Wilson has excellent size to create mismatches in coverage. Needs work on his route running and needs to create better separation. Could convert to tight end.

Chris Trapasso's grade: A-

"Enormous wideout, essentially a sleek TE but has legit WR-like movement skills. Hands are incredibly boom-or-burst. A moose in the open field leads to him dragging defenders and is a capable blocker."

Round 6 (No. 190 overall): Dylan McMahon, NC State

An all-ACC center in his first full year at the position, McMahon was one of the quickest centers at the combine. He projects as a center in the NFL (played guard early in college), yet has plenty of experience all around the interior of the offensive line. He gets flagged a lot and needs work on his lower body, but plays low and creates leverage.

"One of the elite testers at the center spot in this class. Lacks supreme length and it hurts him at times. Counters drive him crazy for long stretches. Accurate when climbing to second level. Balance could improve. Project-y type with traits."
