INTEXT QUESTIONS

PAGE NO. 100

Question 1: An object has moved through a distance. Can it have zero displacement? If yes, support your answer with an example.

Answer: Yes, zero displacement is possible if an object has moved through a distance. Suppose a body is moving in a circular path and starts moving from point A and it returns back at same point A after completing one revolution, then the distance will be equal to its circumference while displacement will be zero.

Question 2: A farmer moves along the boundary of a square field of side 10 m in 40 s. What will be the magnitude of displacement of the farmer at the end of 2 minutes 20 seconds from his initial position?

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 1

Given, side of the square field = 10 m Therefore, perimeter = 10 m × 4 = 40 m Farmer moves along the boundary in 40 second Time = 2 minutes 20 second = 2 × 60 + 20 = 140 s Since, in 40 second farmer moves 40 m

Therefore, in 1 second distance covered by farmer = 40 ÷ 40 = 1m.

Therefore, in 140 second distance covered by farmer = 1 × 140 m = 140 m

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 2

Thus, after 2 minute 20 second the displacement of farmer will be equal to 14.1 m north east from initial position.

Question 3: Which of the following is true for displacement? (a) It cannot be zero. (b) Its magnitude is greater than the distance travelled by the object.

Answer: (a) Not true

Displacement can become zero when the initial and final position of the object is the same.

(b) Not true

Displacement is the shortest measurable distance between the initial and final positions of an object. It cannot be greater than the magnitude of the distance travelled by an object. However, sometimes, it may be equal to the distance travelled by the object.

PAGE NO 109-110

Question 1: A bus starting from rest moves with a uniform acceleration of 0.1ms –2 for 2 minutes. Find (a) the speed acquired, (b) the distance travelled.

Answer:  Here we have, Initial velocity (u) = 0 m/s Acceleration (a) = 0.1ms –2   Time (t) = 2 minute = 120 seconds

(a) The speed acquired: We know that, v = u + at ⇒ v = 0 + 0.1 × 120 m/s ⇒ v = 12 m/s Thus, the bus will acquire a speed of 12 m/s after 2 minute with the given acceleration.

(b) The distance travelled:

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 6

Thus, bus will travel a distance of 720 m in the given time of 2 minute.

Question 2: A train is travelling at a speed of 90 km/h. Brakes are applied so as to produce a uniform acceleration of – 0.5 m/s 2 . Find how far the train will go before it is brought to rest.

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 7

Question 3: A trolley, while going down an inclined plane, has an acceleration of 2 cm/s 2 . What will be its velocity 3 s after the start?

Answer: Here we have, Initial velocity, u = 0 m/s Acceleration (a) = 2 cm/s 2 = 0.02 m/s 2 Time (t) = 3 s Final velocity, v = ?

We know that, v = u + at            Therefore, v = 0 + 0.02 × 3 m/s           ⇒ v = 0.06 m/s Therefore, the final velocity will be 0.06 m/s after start.

Question 4:  A racing car has a uniform acceleration of 4 m/s 2 . What distance will it cover in 10 s after start?

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 8

Thus, racing car will cover a distance of 200 m after start in 10 s with given acceleration.

Question 5: A stone is thrown in a vertically upward direction with a velocity of 5 m/s. If the acceleration of the stone during its motion is 10 m/s 2 in the downward direction, what will be the height attained by the stone and how much time will it take to reach there?

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 9

Thus, stone will attain a height of 1.25 m and time taken to attain the height is 0.5 s.

Question 1: An athlete completes one round of circular track of diameter 200 m in 40 sec.  What will be the distance covered and the displacement at the end of 2 minutes 20 sec?

Answer: Time taken = 2 min 20 sec = 140 sec. Radius, r = 100 m. In 40 sec the athlete complete one round.

So, in 140 sec the athlete will complete = 140 ÷ 40 = 3.5 round.

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 10

At the end of his motion, the athlete will be in the diametrically opposite position.

Displacement = diameter = 200 m.

Question 2: Joseph jogs from one end A to another end B of a straight 300 m road in 2 minutes and 30 sec and then turns around and jogs 100 m back to point C in another 1 minute. What are Joseph’s average speeds and velocities in jogging.

(a) from A to B (b) from A to C?

Answer: For motion from A to B: Distance covered = 300 m = Displacement = 300 m.

Time taken = 150 sec.

(a) We know that,   Average speed  = Total distance covered ÷ Total time taken  = 300 m ÷ 150 sec = 2 ms -1

Average velocity = Net displacement ÷ time taken = 300 m ÷ 150 sec = 2 ms -1

(b) For motion from A to C:

Distance covered = 300 + 100 = 400 m.

Displacement = AB – CB = 300 – 100 = 200 m.

Time taken = 2.5 min + 1 min = 3.5 min = 3.5 × 60 min = 210 sec.

Therefore,        Average speed = Total distance covered ÷ Total time taken  = 400 ÷ 210 = 1.90 ms -1 .

Average velocity = Net displacement ÷ time taken  = 200 m ÷ 210 sec = 0.952ms -1 .

Question 3: Abdul, while driving to school, computes the average speed for his trip to be 20 kmh -1 . On his return trip along the same route, there is less traffic and the average speed is 30 km/h. What is the average speed of Abdul’s trip?

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 11

Question 4: A motor boat starting from rest on a lake accelerates in a straight line at a constant rate of 3.0 ms -2 for 8.0 s. How far does the boat travel during this time?

Answer:  Here,      u = 0 m/s                  a = 3 ms -2                t = 8 s

Using,  s = ut + ½ at 2   ⇒ s = 0 × 8 + ½ × 3×8 2 ⇒ s = 96 m.

Question 5: A driver of a car travelling at 52 kmh -1 applies the brakes and accelerates uniformly in the opposite direction. The car stops after 5 s. Another driver going at 34 kmh -1 in another car applies his brakes slowly and stops in 10 s. On the same graph paper, plot the speed versus time graphs for two cars. Which of the two cars travelled farther after the brakes were applied?

Answer: In in the following graph, AB and CD are the time graphs for the two cars whose initial speeds are 52 km/h(14.4 m/s) and 34 km/h(8.9 m/s), respectively.

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 12

Distance covered by the first car before coming to rest = Area of triangle AOB = ½ × AO × BO = ½ × 52 kmh -1 × 5 s = ½  (52 × 1000 × 1/3600) ms -1 × 5 s = 36.1 m

Distance covered by the second car before coming to rest = Area of triangle COD = ½ × CO × DO = ½ × 34 km h -1 × 10 s = ½ × (34 × 1000 × 1/3600) ms -1 ×10 s = 47.2 m

Thus, the second car travels farther than the first car after they applied the brakes.

Question 6: Fig 8.11 shows the distance-time graph of three objects A, B and C. Study the graph and answer the following questions:

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 13

(a) Which of the three is travelling the fastest? (b) Are all three ever at the same point on the road? (c) How far has C travelled when B passes A? (d) How far has B travelled by the time it passes C?

Answer: (a) B is travelling fastest as he is taking less time to cover more distance. (b) All three are never at the same point on the road. (c) Approximately 6 kms.   [as 8 – 2 = 6] (d) Approximately 7 kms. [as 7 – 0 = 7]

Question 7: A ball is gently dropped from a height of 20 m. If its velocity increases uniformly at the rate of 10ms -2 , with what velocity will it strike the ground? After what time will it strike the ground?

Answer: Given, initial velocity of the ball (u) = 0 (since it began at the rest position) Distance travelled by the ball (s) = 20m Acceleration (a) = 10 ms -2

As per the third motion equation, v 2 = u 2 +2as ⇒ v 2 = 2 × (10ms ‒2 ) × (20m) + 0 ⇒ v 2  = 400m 2 s ‒2 ⇒ v = 20ms -1

The ball hits the ground with a velocity of 20 meters per second.

As per the first motion equation, t = (v-u)/a = (20-0)ms ‒1  / 10ms ‒2 = 2 seconds

Therefore, the ball reaches the ground after 2 seconds.

Question 8: The speed – time graph for a car is shown in Figure:

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 15

(a) Find out how far the car travels in the first 4 seconds. Shade the area on the graph that represents the distance travelled by the car during the period.

(b) Which part of the graph represents uniform motion of the car?

Answer: Shaded area representing the distance travelled is as follows:

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion part 14

(a) The shaded area represents the displacement of the car over a time period of 4 seconds. It can be calculated as:

Distance = 1/2 × 4 × 6 = 12 m

Therefore, the car travels a total of 12 meters in the first four seconds.

(b) Since the speed of the car does not change from the points (x=6) and (x=10), the car is said to be in uniform motion from the 6 th  to the 10 th  second.

Question 9: State which of the following situations are possible and give an example of each of the following:

(a) an object with a constant acceleration but with zero velocity

(b) an object moving with an acceleration but with uniform speed.

(c) an object moving in a certain direction with an acceleration in the perpendicular direction.

Answer: (a) It is possible; an object thrown up into the air has a constant acceleration due to gravity acting on it. However, when it reaches its maximum height, its velocity is zero.

(b) it is impossible; acceleration implies an increase or decrease in speed, and uniform speed implies that the speed does not change over time

(c) It is possible; for an object accelerating in a circular trajectory, the acceleration is perpendicular to the direction followed by the object.

Question 10: An artificial is moving in a circular orbit of radius 42250 km. Calculate its speed if it takes 24 hrs to revolve around the earth.

Answer: Here,

Given, radius of the orbit = 42250 km

Therefore, circumference of the orbit = 2 × π × 42250 km = 265571.42 km

Time taken for the orbit = 24 hours

Therefore, speed of the satellite = 265571.42 ÷ 24 = 11065.4 km.h -1

The satellite orbits the Earth at a speed of 11065.4 kilometers per hour.

You should go through the NCERT Solutions of Science Class 9 as it will help you to write answers in a concise and precise manner. Going through these chapter-wise solutions will improve your understanding of the concepts and will also boost your confidence, keeping you ready ahead of the crucial CBSE Class 9 Science examination. There are several techniques explained here that you can use for preparing well in Science.

You can always carry a little diary or notebook where you can jot down the crucial formulas/ principles or definitions to be used for particular sections. Note down a few terms and diagrams illustrating the experiments, explaining the important principles. You may also use it for last-minute revision. You need to have a thorough understanding of all the concepts rather than going through each and every word of the text and trying to remember the same. Resolve your doubts, if any, by attending the live classes at Vedantu without any hassles.

You must prepare a study plan as well if you want to do well in your exams. This way you will be able to space out your time and you will understand what topics and concepts you must focus on more. While creating your study plan you must make sure that you give time to yourself to breathe and take some rest. If you sit to study for hours you may get tired easily and your brain won’t be able to retain a lot of information altogether. You should also make sure that you take care of yourself during your examination. You must eat healthy and get sufficient sleep during your exams.

One of the best ways to prepare for your exams would be to practice. You must practice as much as you can. You can solve previous year’s papers, sample papers, and other question banks. This will help you get an idea of the exam pattern and the type of questions that can be asked. You must solve previous year’s question papers which are at least 10 years old. Apart from understanding the question and question paper pattern, you will even be able to manage your time properly. Time management is very important when it comes to writing an exam. You must know which section to pay more attention to and which section you will be able to finish quickly. Practicing with sample papers and other question banks will help you to manage your time accordingly.

Do not make a habit of procrastinating and allow your mind sufficient time to get a grasp of new concepts.  Start your preparation early and spare the last few days for exams. Prior to the exams, make sure you have covered all the topics beforehand. Learning new things just before the exams will not be favourable. Also, if you get study leaves before your exams then utilize those days carefully. Make a timetable and chalk out your subjects. Science subjects need more time to practice so allot at least 2-3 hours in a day for Science. Practice the numericals in the first hour and then spend another hour on revision and reading. You should also solve a few questions every day. Try to sit to study as early in the morning as possible when your mind is fresh. This is the time when your mind is the most active. If you have someone at home to help you out with studies, ask him/her to sit with you and check your answers when you solve them. Go through the corrections yourself to know where you went wrong. If you do not have anyone to help you out, try to do it yourself.

You should also understand that referring to NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science is considered to be sufficient to prepare for your examinations. These solutions are framed by Vedantu keeping in mind the abilities of students. These solutions are provided in detail to help you easily understand all the complex topics and concepts. You can even learn technique and tricks to understand the topics better. In order for you to get an overall idea of the concepts, you must start to prepare for your exam beforehand.

Some Other Vital Suggestions for Studying

Another suggestion to study better is to have group studies. However, for this purpose, you and your group have to be really serious and dedicated. When you study in groups, you help each other to understand topics better. When you try to explain something to your friend, your own concepts are clarified better. This way both you and your friend benefit from a group study session. This is something you should always keep in mind since you have to ensure full utilization of these sessions. This is a good habit to have, particularly before the examinations.

Make a habit of solving question papers from the previous year. This will help you to get a hold of the different topics and question patterns usually followed in the exam. In case you do not have the previous years’ question papers, then get hold of some mock test question papers or sample test papers. Solving them is beneficial as you will be fully prepared with the format. Having a set of formulas ready for revision helps you with solving the sums. When you are revising through chapters that require you to do sums, have a separate notebook for writing down the formula. This book is of great help for last moment revision. You will not have to go through page after page looking for the formulas. All you need to do is open the notebook and check the formulas you need. This will help you stay abreast of the important formulas without having to really fret about finding them all over again in case you forget. A common scenario isn’t it? Well, a little strategy will help you overcome these hurdles with ease.

If you are a student who has problems with maths, you will need to practice a bit more than the others. Your theory should be well-prepared so that you can score better in that part. If you have the fear of mathematics, then make it a point to overcome that fear. Do not worry! Maths is not that difficult! All you have to do is forget the difficulty and practice daily. That is the only mantra behind acing maths. Just wake up in the morning and practice 2-3 sums from each chapter. Read the questions carefully before attempting the problem. Understand what it wants and what is already given. Go ahead with it when you understand the question properly.

One more important tip before exams that one must follow is being less distracted. You may think your guardian is being absolutely ruthless when he/she asks you not to watch TV before exams. But what he/she means is that you should wisely utilize your time and distract your mind. It is very important to get into that mindset of studying before exams. Try not getting disturbed or distracted as your mind needs to be in the right state to help you prepare. Allot a specific time for activities such as watching TV or playing video games. Make a time table for that too. You can study the whole day and have a recess period of 2 hours after studying, preferably at night before you go to bed.

Before you write your exam you must make sure that you do a complete revision at least 3 times. Make sure that you don’t learn any new topics one night before the exam. This will only lead to confusion and you might even forget the other topics and concepts that you learned. You should revise one day before the exam, during the night, and then you can do a quick revision in the morning. With the notes that you have, revising concepts and topics will make it easier for you to do. For Class 9 Science , it is important for you to revise how to draw all the diagrams that are required for the examination. This will help you score better marks.

What Else Should You Know While Preparing?

Eating and sleeping sufficiently before exams are very necessary for your body. Eat your food on time and sleep on time. Do not compromise on sleep or go to bed late just the night before your exam. This can cause severe headaches in the morning, potentially making you fall sick while writing your exam. Take proper food with a balanced diet plan so that both your body and mind are healthy.

Lastly, do not take too much pressure. If you are having a problem with any chapter, just get help from Vedantu. Do not stress too much and take short breaks in between study hours. Sitting for long periods can give you back pain and stress you out. Start with the difficult chapters first and then move on to the chapters you find easy. Keep your notes and books arranged so that you do not have to get up repeatedly. Keep cell phones and video games away from the study table. Anything that distracts you should remain out of your sight.

On the day of the examination, try not to discuss what you learned with your friends. This can lead to further confusion for both you and your friends. The way you may have learned a particular concept could be different as compared to the way your friends may have learned a particular topic. Apart from this you may also get confused as to if you missed any topics while studying or not. But don’t worry, you have given your best in your preparation and you will do well according to how you have studied.

These are tried and tested methods and have yielded results for lakhs of students like you all over the country. So, wishing you all the best for your preparation for the CBSE Class 9 Science examination . We advise you to be positive, confident as well as get the concepts clear for good exam performance and a high score. Also, revise the solutions to past question papers after understanding the content of the relevant chapters.

Chapter 8 Motion Class 9 Science Assignments

Question. When is the acceleration of a body positive?

The acceleration of a body is taken to be positive if it is in the direction of velocity.

Question. What is the relationship between distance travelled and the time elapsed for the motion with uniform velocity?

Distance is directly proportional to time used. In fact, distance travelled = Uniform velocity × Time used.

Question.Name the different types of graph.

Bar graphs, straight line graphs, histograms, etc.

Question. Which type of graph is used to describe motion?

Line graph are used to describe the motion of an object.

Question. Define the term velocity. What is its unit? Is it a scalar or vector quantity?

Velocity is a physical quantity that gives the speed and direction of motion of the body Velocity = Displacement/ Time The S.I. unit of velocity is ms–1. Velocity is a vector quantity because its description requires both magnitude and direction.

Question.  Name the two types of physical quantities.

The two types of physical quantities are scalar quantity and vector quantity.

Question. What is the acceleration of a body moving uniform velocity?

The acceleration of a body moving with uniform velocity is zero.

Question. What is magnitude?

The numerical value of a physical quantity is called its magnitude.

Question. Define a scalar quantity.

A physical quantity which has only magnitude and no direction is called a scalar quantity.

Question. What is the difference between uniform linear motion and uniform circular motion? Answer.  When a body is moving with a uniform speed along a straight line, its motion is called linear uniform motion. The uniform linear motion is an accelerated motion. When a body is moving with a constant speed along a circular path, the direction of motion of body changes continuously with time. We know that a change in the direction of motion implies a change in velocity. Thus, uniform circular motion is an accelerated motion even though the speed of the body remains constant.

Question. Why is the motion in a circle at constant speed called accelerated motion? Answer.  When a body moves along a circular path with a constant speed, its direction of motion at any point is along the tangent to the circle at that point, this motion called accelerated motion. The direction of motion changes as the body moves in a circle and causes a change in the velocity. Therefore, the motion of an object along a circular path is an accelerated motion.

Question. What do graphs provide? Answer.  The graphs provide a convenient method to present pictorially the basic information about a variety of events such as motion.

Question.Give an example of use of bar graph and straight graph. Answer.  In telecast of one-day cricket match on T.V. vertical bar graphs show the run rate of a team in over. Straight line graph helps in solving linear equation in two variables.

Question. When do we say that the position of body has changed? Answer. If the distance, or direction, or both of a body relative to a reference point changes then we say that the position of the body has changed.

Question.Classify the following as scalar and vector quantities : Mass, weight, time, temperature, volumes, velocity, speed, forces, acceleration. Answer.

Class 9 Science Worksheets Chapter 8 Motion

Please refer to below questions and answers for Motion Chapter 8 Class 9 Science Worksheets. Prepared by expert teachers for Standard 9 Science

Question. Give two examples of a vector quantity?

Two examples of a vector quantity are displacement and velocity.

Question. Define acceleration. Is it a scalar or a vector quantity?

In non-uniform motion, the velocity of a body changes with time. It has different velocities at different instants of time and at different points of its path. In such a situation, we define a physical quantity called acceleration which is a measure of the change in the velocity of a body per unit time. It is a vector quantity.

Question. What is the Si unit of acceleration?

The SI unit of acceleration is m/s 2 .

Question. Give two examples of a scalar quantity.

Two examples of a scalar quantity are distance and speed.

Question. Define vector quantity.

A physical quantity which has both magnitude and direction is called a vector quantity.

Question. Differentiate acceleration from velocity.

Velocity is the change in position of a body per unit time in a given direction and acceleration is the change in velocity of a body per unit time.

Question.“The direction in which an object moves is given by the direction of velocity of the object and not the direction of acceleration.” Give an example to justify this statement.

When an object is thrown upward, its velocity is directed upward while its acceleration is directed downwards. Thus, the velocity determines the direction of motion.

Question.Give the simplest type of motion.

The simplest type of motion is the motion along a straight line.

Question.Define non-uniform acceleration. Give one example. Answer. Non-uniform acceleration : An object has non-uniform acceleration if it travels in a straight line and its velocity increases or decreases by unequal amounts in equal intervals of time. For example : The movement of a car on a busy road has non-uniform acceleration.

Question.A satellite revolves round the Earth with uniform speed. Is this motion accelerated? If so, in which direction does the acceleration act? Answer.  The velocity of the satellite revolving around the Earth changes due to change in its direction of motion. So, the motion of satellite is an accelerated one. The acceleration is directed towards the centre of the Earth.

Question. When is the acceleration of a body is negative? Answer. The acceleration of a body is taken to be negative when it is opposite to the direction of velocity.

Question.Define the following : (i) Translatory motion (ii) Complex motion Answer. (i) When a body moves along a straight line, its motion is called rectilinear or translatory motion. For example : A car moving on a straight road. (ii) When a body has two or more types of motion, it is said to possess complex motion. For example : A ball rolling down on inclined planes has both rectilinear as well as circular motion.

Question.(i) Give some examples of erratic and uncontrolled motion. (ii) Give an example of controlled motion which can be a service to human beings. (iii) Is there a need to study about the erratic which of some objects and learn to control them? Answer. (i) Flooded river, a hurricane, a tsunami, etc. (ii) Controlled motion of a river in a dam is useful to generate hydroelectric power. (iii) Yes, we should study about the erratic motion of some objects because it will help us in disaster management.

Question. What is the meant by retardation? Give its S.I. unit. or Give an example of negative acceleration. Answer. Retardation : When the velocity of a body decreases with time, its final velocity is less than the initial velocity, i.e. its acceleration is negative. This negative acceleration is called retardation. The S.I. unit of retardation is ms 2 . Example : When brakes are applied to a moving car, its velocity gradually decreases. Under these conditions, the car is under retardation.

Question. How does the velocity change with time in uniform rectilinear motion of an object? Answer. In uniform rectilinear motion of an object, the velocity is constant with time, i.e. change in velocity of the object during any time interval is zero.

Question. (i) Give an example of motion in human body which cannot be perceived directly. (ii) Give an example of motion in nature which cannot be perceived directly. (iii) Give an example of motion of the Earth which cannot be perceived directly. Answer. (i) The motion of blood through veins and arteries in human body cannot be perceived directly. (ii) The motion of air is not perceived directly. We perceive it by observing the movement of dust or leaves of trees, etc. (iii) The phenomena of sunrise, sunset and change of seasons is due to rotation and revolution of the Earth which cannot be perceived directly.

Question. How does the velocity change with time in nonuniform rectilinear motion of an object? Answer. The velocity has different values at different instant of time and at different points of its path, i.e. change in velocity of the object during any time interval is not zero.

Question. How can we represent the change in the position of an object with time? Answer. The change in the position of an object with time can be represented on the distance-time graph by adopting a convenient scale of choice.

Motion Chapter 8 Class 9 Science Worksheets

In this graph, time is taken along x-axis and distance is taken along y-axis.

Question.A person moves along the boundary of a square field of side 10 m in 20 s. What will be the magnitude of displacement of that person at the end of 2 minutes 20 seconds? Answer. Side of square field = 10 m So, perimeter = 10 m × 4 = 40 m Person moves along the boundary in 20 sec. Displacement after 2 m 20 sec = 2 × 60 s + 20 s = 140 s = ? Since in 20 s person moves 40 m. Therefore, in 1 sec distance covered 40/20 = 2 m Therefore, in 140 sec distance covered = 2 × 140 = 280 m Now, number of rotation to cover 240 along the boundary = Total distance/Perimeter = 280m/40m = 7 rounds.

Hence, after 7 rounds the person will be at the starting point, so displacement will be zero.

Question.Neha swims in a 90 m long pool. She covers 180 m in one minute by swimming from one end to the other and back along the same straight path. Understanding Motion

Reference point and reference frame.

  • To describe the position of an object, we need a reference point or origin. An object may seem to be moving to one observer and stationary to another.
  • Example: A passenger inside a bus sees the other passengers to be at rest, whereas an observer outside the bus sees the passengers to be in motion.
  • In order to make observations easy, a convention or a common reference point or frame is needed. All objects must be in the same reference frame.

Distance and Displacement

The magnitude of the length covered by a moving object is called distance. It has no direction.

Displacement is the shortest distance between two points or the distance between the starting and final positions with respect to time. It has magnitude as well as direction.

Displacement can be zero, but distance cannot.

Distance and Displacement

To know more about Distance and Displacement, visit here .

Magnitude is the size or extent of a physical quantity. In physics, we have scalar and vector quantities.

Scalar quantities are only expressed as magnitude. E.g.: time, distance, mass, temperature, area, volume

Vector quantities are expressed in magnitude as well as the direction of the object. E.g.: Velocity, displacement, weight, momentum, force, acceleration, etc.

Time, Average Speed and Velocity

Time and speed.

Time is the duration of an event that is expressed in seconds. Most physical phenomena occur with respect to time. It is a scalar quantity.

Speed is the rate of change in distance. If a body covers a certain distance in a certain amount of time, its speed is given by

The instantaneous speed is the speed of an object at a particular moment in time.

Average speed is stated as the distance covered by the object within a period of time.

Average speed = Total distance travelled / Total time taken

The below table lists the difference between Average Speed and Instantaneous Speed.

Uniform motion and Non-uniform motion

When an object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, it is in uniform motion.

Examples of Uniform Motion

  • Movement of the ceiling fan’s blades.
  • Motion of Earth around the sun
  • Pendulum with equivalent amplitude on either side

When an object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time, it is said to be in non-uniform motion.

  • Bouncing ball
  • Running horse
  • Moving train

To know more about Uniform Motion and Non-Uniform Motion, visit here .

The Rate of change of displacement is velocity. It is a vector quantity. Here the direction of motion is specified.

Instantaneous velocity is the rate of change of position for a time interval which is very small, i.e. almost zero. In more simple words, the velocity of an object at a given instant of time is known as instantaneous velocity.

Average velocity is defined as the displacement (∆x) divided by the time intervals (∆t) in which the displacement occurs.

For more information on Average Speed and Velocity, watch the below video

class 9 science chapter 8 assignment

To know more about Average Speed and Average Velocity, visit here .

Acceleration

The rate of change of velocity is called acceleration. It is a vector quantity. In non-uniform motion, velocity varies with time, i.e., the change in velocity is not 0. It is denoted by “a”

A c c e l e r a t i o n   =  Change in Velocity / Time

Where t (time taken), v (final velocity) and u (initial velocity).

To know more about Acceleration, visit here .

Motion Visualised

Distance-time graph.

  • Distance-Time graphs show the change in the position of an object with respect to time.
  • Linear variation = uniform motion and non-linear variations imply non-uniform motion
  • The slope gives us speed

Distance-Time Graph

  • OA implies uniform motion with constant speed as the slope is constant
  • AB implies the body is at rest as the slope is zero
  • B to C is a non-uniform motion

To know more about Distance-Time Graph, visit here .

Velocity-Time Graph

  • Velocity-Time graphs show the change in velocity with respect to time.
  • Slope gives acceleration
  • The area under the curve gives displacement
  • Line parallel to x-axis implies constant velocity-

Velocity-Time Graph

OA = constant acceleration, AB = constant velocity, BC = constant retardation

To know more about Velocity-Time Graph, visit here .

Equations of Motion

The motion of an object moving at uniform acceleration can be described with the help of three equations, namely

(i) v = u + at

(ii) v 2 – u 2 = 2as

(iii) s = ut + (1/2)at 2

where u is the initial velocity, v is the final velocity, t is the time, a is the acceleration and s is the displacement.

Derivation of Velocity-Time Relation by Graphical Method

class 9 science chapter 8 assignment

A body starts with some initial non-zero velocity at A and goes to B  with constant acceleration a.

From the graph BD = v (final velocity) – DC = u (initial velocity)…………..(eq 1).

BD = BC – DC……………..( eq 2 ).

Therefore   BD = at………………….(eq 3).

Substitute everything we get: at = v – u.

Rearrange to get v = u + at.

Derivation of Position-Time Relation by Graphical Method

Derivation of position-time relation by graphical method

A body starts with some initial non-zero velocity at A and goes to B  with constant acceleration a

Area under the graph gives Displacement as follows:

OA = u , OC = t and BD = at

Substituting in (eq 1) we get s = \(\begin{array}{l}ut + \frac{1}{2}at^{2}\end{array} \)

Derivation of Position-Velocity Relation by Graphical Method

Velocity-Time Graph 4

Displacement covered will be the area under the curve which is the trapezium OABC.

We know the area of trapezium is

OA = u and BC = v and OC = t

Substitute (eq 2) in (eq 1) and arrange to get

v 2 −u 2 =2as

Uniform Circular Motion

  • If an object moves in a circular path with uniform speed, its motion is called uniform circular motion.
  • Velocity changes as direction keeps changing.
  • Acceleration is constant.
  • The uniform circular velocity is given by the following formula: \(\begin{array}{l}v=\frac{2r}{t}\end{array} \)

Uniform Circular Motion

Uniform Circular Motion Examples

  • The motion of artificial satellites around the Earth is an example of uniform circular motion.
  • The motion of electrons around its nucleus.
  • The motion of blades of the windmills.
  • The tip of the second hand of a watch with a circular dial shows uniform circular motion.
