What could we see at the Xbox Games Showcase?

5 Xbox Series X exclusives which are overdue an update at the Xbox Games Showcase

What's interesting about the Xbox Games Showcase teasers is that Microsoft has been very clear that this year's showcase will feature both new games (as you'd hope) and "updates on major titles". Now, this is particularly interesting because there are many Xbox exclusives that we've not heard about in several years.

For example, it's gone very quiet on the likes of Rare's Everwild , and we've not even heard about Avowed from Obsidian Entertainment , The Outer Worlds 2 , the reboot that is the New Perfect Dark , or Avalanche's new IP Contraband since they were first announced back in 2020.

There's also the elusive Fable , along with games like Project 007 or the Indiana Jones game that admittedly feel much farther off.

With Starfield out in September and Redfall now in the rear-view, we could also get a glimpse of some upcoming Bethesda games - although that may be a little optimistic.

Adam Bankhurst Avatar

For the first time since January 2023, Xbox is bringing back its Developer_Direct show that promises to give fans a glimpse at such upcoming titles as MachineGames' Indiana Jones, Obsidian's Avowed, Oxide Games' Ara: History Untold, and Ninja Theory's Senua's Saga: Hellblade II.

The Developer_Direct will kick off on January 18 and this watch guide will provide you with everything you need to know to watch the show, including start times, a list of places you can watch it with us, and what you can expect from the event.

Xbox Developer_Direct January 2024 Start Time

After the show, be sure to stay tuned to IGN's channels as a special episode of Podcast Unlocked will take place that will serve as a post-show to the Developer_Direct. We will break down all the big announcements and share our thoughts on what was shown!

What to Expect From the Xbox Developer_Direct 2024

As previously mentioned, this upcoming Developer Direct will feature an in-depth look at upcoming Xbox games, including MachineGames' Indiana Jones, Obsidian's Avowed, Oxide Games' Ara: History Untold, and Ninja Theory's Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. The show will be presented by the developers themselves, and it looks to give fans a glimpse into the creation of these exciting titles.

Xbox actually provided a pretty detailed description of what fans can expect from the show, and we're including it below:

  • Indiana Jones game: MachineGames, the award-winning studio behind the recent Wolfenstein series, will reveal their upcoming Indiana Jones game, an action-adventure that puts players in the leather jacket of the legendary archaeologist. Developer_Direct will showcase more than 10 minutes of game and developer insights, including details about the game’s setting and story, how fans will actually play as Indy, additional details from his next globe-trotting adventure, and the premiere of the first gameplay trailer.
  • Avowed: The team at Obsidian will share the first deep dive into the gameplay experience fans can expect in Avowed, their upcoming fantasy action RPG, set in the fantastical, vibrant Living Lands. Learn more about how Obsidian’s expertise in building worlds with deep themes, dynamic gameplay, and thoughtful reactivity come to life in Avowed where players will have agency to make choices to shape every step of their adventure.
  • Ara: History Untold: Hear from the leads at Oxide Games – a studio founded by veterans of the strategy genre and the creators behind classic strategy titles including Civilization V – as they unveil exclusive new gameplay and share more details about the inspiration, key features, and road ahead for their upcoming historical grand strategy game.
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II: Ninja Theory take us behind the scenes at their studio in Cambridge to give us some insight on how they are crafting Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. The team will speak to the ambition and meticulous care involved in creating Senua’s journey of survival.

While these four games are being highlighted prior to the show, there's always a chance Xbox has a surprise or two in store for us. In January 2023's Developer_Direct, Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush was announced and released that day with no prior warning.

What most surely won't be there, however, is updates on games from Activision Blizzard as Xbox said "you can look forward to news from those teams later this year."

As for The Elder Scrolls Online 2024 Global Reveal, this standalone presentation will "unveil the game’s next major Chapter, including the new zone, storyline, and other major features coming in the game’s biggest update this year."

For more, check out what we expect from Xbox in 2024 and the news that fans think they've discovered the full name of MachineGames' Indiana Jones game.

Microsoft will hold a second Xbox Showcase next week with ‘deeper looks’ at games

Image of Chirag Pattni

The Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase is taking place this coming Sunday, June 12, at 1 PM ET. The show is expected to run for about 90 minutes, and this has left some wondering about whether this is long enough for Microsoft to give each game shown enough time in the spotlight.

But that no longer seems to be a concern. Microsoft has now announced that it’s holding a second Xbox showcase just a few days later. The Xbox Games Showcase Extended will take place on June 14, at 1 PM ET. Just like the main event, the Xbox Games Showcase Extended will last for about 90 minutes, and will be available to watch on the company’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

On the Xbox Wire website, the company says, “We will share new trailers, take deeper looks at the news from the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, and speak with some of your favorite game creators.” Last year, Microsoft held an extended showcase to show off new looks at Forza Horizon 5  and Age of Empires IV , among other games.

Deeper looks into upcoming Microsoft games

Looking back at the extended showcase from last year, fewer games were shown. However, more detail was given about these chosen games. With that in mind, we expect that the Xbox Extended presentation will give the company time to delve deeper into any big titles that only receive short trailers during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase.

Ideally, this could mean an extensive look at the gameplay and systems of Starfield and Redfall . There are a lot of other potential first-party games that could appear here as well. The fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed , could be one such game. Everwild from Rare, Fable from Playground Games, and Contraband from Avalanche Studios are possibilities as well.

It all depends on what Microsoft and Bethesda show off during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, and it won’t be long before we find out.

Microsoft sets Xbox business update for Thursday afternoon

Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty will discuss the future of Xbox during a special podcast.

Donovan Erskine

After rumors began to spread earlier this month that Microsoft was planning to go multiplatform with several of its first-party games, Microsoft Gaming boss Phil Spencer acknowledged concerns and confirmed that a business presentation was planned for the near future. It’s now been announced that this business update will be delivered this Thursday afternoon as a special episode of the official Xbox Podcast.

The Xbox Twitter/X account shared the announcement of the company’s upcoming business update this afternoon. The special episode of the Xbox Podcast will air this Thursday, February 15, at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET. It will feature Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, President of Xbox Sarah Bond, and Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty.

Please join us for a special edition of the Official Xbox Podcast. Hear from Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond and Matt Booty as they share updates on the Xbox business. pic.twitter.com/TxwWJVUbgx — Xbox (@Xbox) February 12, 2024

This stems from the flurry of reports last week that alleged Microsoft was planning to release previously exclusive titles like Starfield and the Gears of War series on the PlayStation 5 as part of a new multiplatform strategy. Furthermore, these rumors also indicated that Microsoft was looking to transition out of the console business altogether. However, Phil Spencer seemingly shot down that last part during recent internal communication with his staff.

With the Xbox’s business update set to arrive in podcast format, there will likely be a lot of information to parse through. To keep up with all of it, be sure to bookmark our Xbox topic page .

Microsoft’s update on the state of the Xbox business — whether Xbox exclusive games are going multiplatform and what the Xbox console business will look like — will be revealed on Thursday, Feb. 15. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Xbox president Sarah Bond, and head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty promise to share updates on the Xbox business in the Official Xbox Podcast, according to a post on X from the official Xbox account .

Thursday’s special edition of the Official Xbox Podcast will available to watch on YouTube “or wherever you listen to your podcasts,” Microsoft said, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts . The business update episode of the Official Xbox Podcast will go live on Thursday at 3 p.m. EST/12 p.m. PST.

The discussion between Spencer, Bond, and Booty will hopefully address roiling rumors and reports that various Xbox-exclusive games, including titles like Sea of Thieves , Hi-Fi Rush , Indiana Jones and the Great Circle , and Starfield , might be making their way to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. In early February, Spencer addressed the flurry of rumors in a roundabout way, promising concrete details about what’s next for the Xbox brand and platform.

“We’re listening and we hear you,” Spencer said on X . “We’ve been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned.”

The future of Xbox will reportedly still have a hardware component. According to a report from the Updater newsletter, Spencer recently told Microsoft employees at a town hall meeting that there are no plans to stop making Xbox consoles, part of a strategy that involves “multiple kinds of devices.”

Microsoft is already in the multiplatform game business, thanks to acquired properties like Minecraft, Call of Duty, Diablo, and Overwatch. But if franchises typically associated as Xbox-only, like Halo, Gears of War, Forza, and Fable, are going to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, it would signal a radical departure from Xbox’s past. We’ll know more on Thursday.

Yes, you can use Office on the Xbox Series X|S with a mouse and keyboard

We don't know why you'd do it, but you can indeed use Microsoft Office on Xbox consoles through the new Edge browser.

Microsoft Office Xbox

What you need to know

  • Microsoft recently rolled out the Xbox September Update.
  • As part of the update, Xbox consoles received the new Microsoft Edge, which supports mouse and keyboard.
  • As a result, you can use Microsoft Office through the web with a mouse and keyboard on your console.

Some ask why you would want to use Microsoft Office on your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. We at Windows Central choose to ask why not ? The Xbox September Update brings the new Microsoft Edge, which is based on Chromium. The browser has full mouse and keyboard support, opening the door to all kinds of shenanigans. If you have one of the best keyboards for the Xbox Series X or Series S , you can now type up documents on your console.

Within Microsoft Edge, you can browse through gaming how-to guides, media sites, and everything else the web has to offer. You can also go to Office.com . Of course, you could access Office's web apps before this new version of Edge shipped to consoles, but you couldn't use a mouse and keyboard. You could have used your Xbox controller to navigate through your documents and a chatpad to write, but that seems a bit awkward, even compared to using your Xbox to do your homework.

With full mouse and keyboard support, you can use your Xbox console to do your homework, create a PowerPoint presentation, or even play around in Excel. Again, we're not sure how many people will use their browser like this, but isn't it fun to know that you can?

You can update your Xbox console with these steps:

  • Press the Xbox button .
  • Select Profile & system .
  • Select Settings .
  • Select Updates .
  • Select Console update available .

Razer Turret

This keyboard and mouse combination is fully compatible with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It has a lappable wireless design for gaming. You could also use it to write a Word document.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has dropped some hints that PC stores like Epic Games Store and Itch.io could one day arrive on Xbox consoles. In an interview with Polygon , Spencer says the console market isn’t growing and that there are barriers that exist today. “How can we be part of opening up that model?” asks Spencer, hinting at a potentially radical rethinking of Microsoft’s Xbox console ecosystem.

SAN JOSE, Calif. and REDMOND, Wash. – Mar. 26, 2024 – Today at Adobe Summit – the world’s largest digital experience conference – Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) announced plans to bring Adobe Experience Cloud workflows and insights to Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 to help marketers overcome application and data silos and more efficiently manage everyday workflows. These new integrated capabilities will bring relevant marketing insights and workflows from Adobe Experience Cloud applications and Microsoft Dynamics 365 to Microsoft Copilot, assisting marketers as they work in tools such as Outlook, Microsoft Teams and Word to develop creative briefs, create content, manage content approvals, deliver experiences and more.

“The demand for personalized content across social media, mobile and other fast-moving channels has been exploding, pushing marketers to drive greater efficiency and productivity in their everyday work,” said Amit Ahuja, senior vice president, Digital Experience Business at Adobe. “Marketers spend a great deal of their day working across Adobe and Microsoft applications, and the partnership provides a unique offering for marketing teams, streamlining daily tasks across planning, collaboration, create and campaign execution.”

“Microsoft and Adobe share a common goal of empowering marketers to focus on the work that’s most important – creating impactful campaigns and enhancing customer experiences,” said Jared Spataro, corporate vice president, AI at Work, Microsoft. “By integrating contextual marketing insights from Adobe Experience Cloud applications and Dynamics 365 within the flow of work through Copilot for Microsoft 365, we deliver on our shared goal while helping marketers streamline their efforts, break down barriers, and deliver exceptional results.”

The marketing discipline is complex and made up of specialized roles which require specialized tools – from designing brand content and managing campaigns, to tracking audience insights across channels with internal and external partners and reporting out results. This means marketers face challenges of working in silos and in different applications, which can lead to misalignment and negatively impact speed and productivity. According to a recent survey conducted by Microsoft [1] , 43 percent of marketing and communications professionals reported that having to switch between digital applications and programs was disruptive to their creativity.

Together, Adobe and Microsoft will address these challenges. Initial capabilities will focus on addressing the needs of marketers who often work across multiple teams internally and externally while managing campaign goals, status and actions. The capabilities will address scenarios including:

  • Strategic insights in the flow of work : Enriched with relevant campaign insights from Adobe Experience Cloud applications such as Adobe Customer Journey Analytics and Adobe Workfront, combined with Dynamics 365, the Copilot for Microsoft 365 experience helps marketers get quick insights and updates in Outlook, Teams and Word. Marketers can ask questions to get the status of a marketing project, understand the effectiveness of a campaign, outstanding approvals, and actions to take, or the audience and KPIs being defined in the latest campaign brief.
  • Create campaign briefs, presentations, website updates and emails with relevant context : Marketers can be even more data-driven without having to go to multiple tools or people for insights. Marketing insights from Adobe and Dynamics 365 will be available in Copilot for Microsoft 365 to create briefs, presentations for exec reviews, or any kind of report or message. Marketers can also create imagery with Adobe Firefly generative AI or copy for marketing experiences through Adobe Experience Manager Sites; marketers can create content in Word that gets published directly to channels such as web and mobile.
  • Keep projects moving with in-context notifications and summaries : Often marketers will need to go into multiple applications, emails and chats to compile a project status – from feedback and approvals to work item changes or due dates. These integrated capabilities informed by Adobe Workfront can work across these applications to create notifications informed by relevant marketing data to stay on top of any changes and actions to take.

Microsoft Reportedly Working On Handheld Xbox Prototype

(RTTNews) - According to Windows Central managing editor Jez Corden, Microsoft (MSFT) is working on an Xbox handheld prototype.

"I know that they have got handheld prototypes right now," Corden said on the show, the Xbox Two Podcast.

In 2017, the tech giant had tinkered away with Xbox handheld prototypes but it didn't come out well, Microsoft gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed.

However, Corden believes that this time the device would be launched successfully to compete with similar video game consoles, such as Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.

Speaking in an interview with Polygon, Spencer stated that he wants the new Xbox to have access to all games with associated files, and the ability to boot into the Xbox app full-screen but in a compact mode.

Earlier this year, there were rumors about Xbox leaving the video game console business, but Microsoft confirmed later that it is actually working on the next generation of Xbox consoles, without sharing any specific details.

At the time, Xbox President Sarah Bond hinted "some exciting stuff coming out in hardware."

Certain leaked court documents revealed last year that an Xbox handheld console is on the way. However, Spencer claimed that the plans shown in the document were outdated.

SMBs are important drivers of economic growth and essential for the well-being of communities both locally and globally. While the specific business challenges may differ, one thing is true—many of you have told us that you are challenged by time-consuming, mundane tasks. 2 Copilot for Microsoft 365 can help you save time and enables you to maintain focus on why you started a business in the first place—your vision for your product or service and solving the problems your customers face. And with Copilot for Microsoft 365, you can feel confident in knowing Microsoft has a commitment to responsible , secure AI and the Copilot Copyright Commitment.

Unlock the transformative power of AI

The age of AI is here, and the technology is evolving rapidly. To support businesses and workers, Copilot for Microsoft 365 introduces an entirely new way of working. You can gain a lot from incorporating AI into your work.

There are many options available for those of you who want to tap into the transformative power of AI. To begin your journey, you can start with Copilot to see what is possible when using AI plus the web. However, you can go much further than that and use tools that meet you where you are in the flow of your work while keeping your business safe and secure. To understand how we make this possible with Copilot for Microsoft 365, let’s start with an overview of the capabilities.

Infographic that shows how Copilot and Copilot for Microsoft 365 are based in Large Language Models and the web, and Copilot for Microsoft 365 also includes the Microsoft Graph, App integration, data protection and customization.

It all starts with AI and large language models (or LLMs), which make up the foundational, underlying intelligence for Copilot. LLMs generate responses based on prompts that you create. The models are guided by receiving use-case-specific information through a process we call grounding. When you are using our free version of Copilot , you get the power of AI grounded in the information widely available on the web. But what if you want to receive information more relevant to you and your business—like gathering all the information relevant to helping you prepare a proposal for a customer? Part of the magic of Copilot for Microsoft 365 happens when responses are based on your personalized work information. This is made possible with the Microsoft Graph.

Microsoft graph

The Microsoft Graph is all of your work content and context that exists throughout your day—like your emails, chats, call transcripts, documents, and more. The quality and relevance of the responses received improve dramatically when AI is reasoning over your information from the Microsoft Graph. For example, you can prompt Copilot for Microsoft 365 to give you the latest updates and information from one of your team members or a summary of business performance and it will return information that is relevant along with references for support. All this can be done with ease in the tools that you use every day.

“ Everyone has a favorite way for gathering and using information. Some people use email, some OneNote or something else, but a single app never gives you the whole picture. That’s what’s great about Copilot because it looks at everything across all the Microsoft 365 apps and data and then lets you bring it all together no matter which app you’re using.” —Melissa Lee-Young, Head of Marketing, Generation-e

Microsoft 365 apps

The Microsoft 365 apps include the tools you use to run your business, such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and more. You can find so many ways to get more done in less time using Copilot for Microsoft 365 within these apps including:

  • Keeping tabs on your daily operations by asking Copilot in Microsoft Outlook to summarize long email threads so you’re immediately up to speed with those important conversations.
  • Partnering with Copilot in Microsoft Word to write and edit job descriptions and customer-facing content as well as summarizing documents so you never have to start with a blank sheet again.
  • Growing your customers and building your brand by transforming written content into compelling pitch decks and presentations with Copilot in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Staying on top of your business performance or projects by using Copilot in Microsoft Excel (currently in public preview with updates beginning to roll out in June 2024) to filter, format, sort, and edit information, letting you go from raw data to useful insights faster. 3

Having Copilot for Microsoft 365 at your side within the flow of work—instead of leveraging an external tool that doesn’t have access to the information most relevant to you—is how workers can reap the benefits of supercharged productivity and creativity that Copilot for Microsoft 365 offers.

Data protection is automatically inherited through your existing Microsoft 365 security, privacy, identity, and compliance policies. Copilot for Microsoft 365 acts on behalf of the individual user, so it can’t access any information that someone does not have permission to see. Your data always stays within your control and is never used to train the models without your permission. This protection of your business data is a key reason why your business information is safer using AI in the confines of Microsoft 365, versus through a free service.
