Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The MPhil degree is a postgraduate programme that focuses on research work. The programme is available in all faculties and schools/departments. The programme offers an introductory experience to research studies and is suitable for those who wish to later pursue a PhD degree or become professionals in their specialised area. MPhil candidates may commence their studies on September 1 or January 1 for a period of 24 months (full-time) or 36 months (part-time). The minimum study period is half of the study period.

MPhil students will receive ongoing advice and guidance from a dedicated academic or a team of academics in conducting research and thesis writing. In addition, students will be required to follow an approved course of study and research, including coursework on discipline-specific knowledge, language and research skills. The coursework component is well designed to equip students for their research work and thesis writing. Click here for the details of the coursework requirements.

The award of the MPhil degree is based on satisfactorily completing courses, submitting a thesis that displays some originality and demonstrates a sound understanding of the field of study and the appropriate research methods, and satisfying the examiners in an oral examination, unless waived, (and any other examination if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.

Creative foundations i: macro structure and history.

This foundations course offers special focus on the intercultural histories and practices of creative discourse, structure and impact. Students will explore the macro fluid histories and structures of creativity and construction in genre and expectation. This macro course will include emphasis on the legacies of creative discourse and practice in English and monolingual contexts. Included will be the urgent history and contemporary architecture and structure for creativity in evolving and international frames and contexts.

Creative Foundations II: Microscope on the Given and the Made

This foundations course offers special focus on the intercultural histories and practices of creative discourse, structure and impact. Students will explore the macro fluid histories and structures of creativity and construction in genre and expectation. This macro course will include emphasis on the legacies of creative discourse and practice in English and monolingual contexts. Included will be the urgent history and contemporary architecture and structure for creativity in evolving and international frames and contexts.This course will offer a look into the micro scale of creativity, architectural sentences and discourse. Comparative creative practices and histories will be explored, whether working primarily in English, itself a daily and ever-changing amalgam of many languages and histories, or working as a multilingual writer through English language instruments at this moment in time. Students will also focus at a micro scale on what is called in creative studies the “given and the made,” a look into the balance of safety and risk that the field of creativity depends upon deeply in any developing individual project or collective.

Constructing and Staging Creative Perspective

Reading and observing widely is essential to framing the array of choices that a creative perspective demands. Creative perspectives may be said, more accurately, to be drawn from design: active “watching” and “directing” the construction of creative staging. Therefore, in this unique design studio, students will begin to articulate and study their own creative perspectives on an ongoing and selected project, brought forward from work or personal development. This course will also build toward each student’s submission in the Happiness Project of Semester 2. The course will therefore explore advanced elements of creative craft and articulation in monolingual and multilingual contexts.

Creative Life Stories: Narrating the Life Story of a Project, Person or Dream

In this course, students will study, and frame with increasing accuracy, their own creative signatures of history, practice, and voice within their chosen field. In particular, students will focus on the history and practice of creatively “telling” the life story of a project, person, or dream that pertains to the Creative Thesis. In this course of creative “authorship,” whether creatively authoring a novel, a project, class materials, a film or presentation, students will learn how to cast creative light on what is otherwise left unseen and unfelt without their illumination. Students will study the discipline of creative impact in telling and constructing the life narrative, especially in relation to the creator’s own decisions for “what is at stake” on creative perspective. The course therefore can also pave the way, for exploring, generation to generation, what constitutes an ‘experimental’ work, from both individual and intercultural perspectives.

Workshopping Your Creative Vision

This studio course in the Black Box will open the frames of creative writing to wider and communal contexts of practice and reception. It will explore the many “built environments” of creative contexts: forging new communities and building excitement around staging powerful new creative perspectives on a growing creative thesis. In innovative and direct practice and study, students will be given opportunities communally to stage and share excerpts from their own developing work, guided in workshop by creative professionals. No matter what the project or genre, students will receive mentorship in-house at the Black Box Studio with creative professionals to help understand the totality of a writer’s creative invitation, integration, and “environment.”

Capstone Experience: The Happiness Project

Maya Angelou writes, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Creative communications positions as foundational that any project, whether of writing, video, architecture, teaching materials or rhetorical presentation, needs a deep understanding and infusion of creative values, rooted in creative studies, to let it move its audience into an unforgettable and powerful emotional impact. Creative communications, after all, does not take for granted the beauty — and thus, the urgent study and practice — of connecting with those we do not know, across cultures and languages, ages and tastes, and even connecting better with those we do know well.

Drawing from ENGL7512, this course takes a special angle of connection, construction, and creative communications as an act of creative “happiness.” Happiness offers a 21st century field of inquiry; new interdisciplinary approaches are important for studying closely and at length how our creative projects become communicatively “memorable,” that is, of lasting and felt impact for our audiences.

This course will culminate in the production of a powerful and creative perspective in communications and narration for the life story of your own project or design, through small guided tutorial and workshop groups. Students will learn to build a higher register of “happiness” in audiences, across languages and cultures. This capstone course, therefore, will bring your own project new frames of creative communications and development, exploring questions of ideals, rituals, and play with regard to human relationships and societies. In the capstone process, students are invited to explore their personal vulnerability or resistance to certain “master plots” and conventions of their field, to challenge familiar and often unchallenged ideologies, and to become powerful players in their own acts of building and constructing creative communication that lasts through time.

Page Richards

Chair of creative writing & theatre.

Page Richards graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania in mathematics, from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in literature and poetry, and with a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Boston University. She has also studied at the Playwrights’ Theatre in Boston and has contributed to theatre, script development, and film production in Hollywood.

She grew up on stage, performing and directing theatre and vaudeville productions in the U.S. and Europe. She received a national Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities in the U.S., the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Faculty of Arts at HKU, a Vermont Studio Writer’s Fellowship for her poems and translations, among many other international awards. Her excerpt from a new manuscript of poems, selected by the Yale Younger Series Poet award winner Eduardo C. Corral as a Finalist in the Tupelo Press Snowbound Award and named “among the very best work” in 2018, is now under expansion and development for publication. A recent chapter on poetry and life writing was released in a 2019 book, called New and Experimental Approaches to Writing Lives. She publishes books in poetry and creative writing, as well as articles in journals around the world, touring and giving readings. Her creative and critical work appears frequently in edited volumes and journals, such as The Dalhousie Review, The Antigonish Review, the Harvard Review, Wascana Review, the Journal of Modern Languages, and ‘After thirty Falls’: New Essays on John Berryman, among others.

She is co-founder of the MFA Tri-Continental Consortium, joining with global partners at Boston University, home to the US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, and The Manchester Writing School, home to the UK Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy. She currently directs The MFA in Creative Writing, the HKU Black Box, the HKU Guild, and the HKU International Creative Writing Prize. She is Chief Editor of Yuan Yang: A Journal of Hong Kong and International Writing, soon to be re-released as 遊誌JOURNEYING.

Kimberly Elkins

Kimberly Elkins’ fiction and nonfiction have appeared in a wide spectrum of publications, including The Atlantic, The Iowa Review, The Chicago Tribune, Best New American Voices, Slice and Glamour, among others. Her book What is Visible, published by Twelve/Grand Central, received international accolades: New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice 2014, Bookpage Best Books of 2014; Atlanta Journal-Constitution Best Books of 2014, St. Louis Post Dispatch Best Books of 2014, Woman’s Day, Most Inspirational Book of 2014, Women’s National Book Association Great Group Reads Pick for 2014, Library Journal Best Summer Debuts 2014, and the 2014 David J. Langum, Sr. Prize for American Historical Fiction. She was a finalist for the National Magazine Award in fiction, and writing fellowships include Harvard, Radcliffe and the Kerouac Project.

Saskya Jain

Saskya Jain was born in Ahmedabad and grew up in New Delhi. Educated at Berlin’s Free University and at Columbia University, she holds an MFA in Fiction from Boston University, where she received the Florence Engel Randall Award and the Robert Pinsky Global Fellowship. Her novel, Fire Under Ash was shortlisted for the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize. Her writing has appeared in numerous journals and magazines, most recently in Intelligent Life, The Economist and The Caravan. She lives in New Delhi and Berlin.

Dino Mahoney

Dino Mahoney moves between his base in London and his former home in Hong Kong. A winner in the Sentinel Poetry Book Competition, 2017, his book Tutti Frutti was launched in 2018 in London, Hong Kong, and around the world. He is an award-winning playwright who has written plays for the stage (performed in London and Hong Kong) and for radio (The BBC World Service, BBC Radio 4 and RTHK Radio 4). He is well known in Hong Kong as the writer and presenter of “Songbirds”, which is a weekly soap drama, set in Hong Kong. He was also a drama critic and an arts journalist for The South China Morning Post. He is the Creative Director of Drunken Sailor Films, writing scripts and directing short film, while also actively creating and performing in poetry and music events.

Ploi Pirapokin

Ploi Pirapokin was born in Thailand and raised in Hong Kong. Her short stories and essays have been featured on Tor.com, The Offing, Apogee Journal, The Bellingham Review, Cleaver Magazine, and more. She has received grants and fellowships from the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Creative Capacity Fund, the Headlands Canter for the Arts, the Ragdale Foundation, Kundiman, and others. She holds a BA in Communication Studies and English from the University of San Diego, an MFA in fiction from San Francisco State University, and is a 2018 graduate of the Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy workshop. She currently lives in San Francisco, where she is the Assistant Director of the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts’ Creative Writing Department, and teaches for the UCLA Writer’s Extension Program and the Creative Nonfiction Foundation.

Shane Sakhrani

Shane is a playwright born in Hong Kong. His romantic comedy, “A Widow of No Importance” was produced by East West Players in Los Angeles to positive reviews (LA Times Critic’s Pick, LA Weekly & Backstage Critic’s Pick). His family comedy, “The Doctor is Indian”, had a sold out run in Singapore and was a finalist for the 2011 Kendeda award given by the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Other plays include “Hero Hindustani” and “This Charming Man” Shane has written a screenplay for Laximi Films and had productions in Houston and Chicago in 2014 and 2015. He has written a series of short films set within the Indian communities of East Asia and produced “Postcards from Hong Kong” a ten-minute play festival of world premiere plays by HKU alumni at the Fringe Club in Hong Kong. Shane holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing (Playwriting and Screenwriting) from the University of Southern California.

Brittani Sonnenberg

Brittani Sonnenberg was raised across three continents and has worked as a journalist in Germany, China, and throughout Southeast Asia. A graduate of Harvard, she received her MFA in fiction from the University of Michigan. Her novel Home Leave was published by Grand Central in Summer 2014. Her fiction has also been published in The O’Henry Prize Stories 2008 and shortlisted for the Best American Short Stories 2004. In addition, her stories have appeared in Ploughshares, Short Fiction, X-Connect, and the Minnesota Monthly. Her nonfiction has appeared in Time, the Associated Press, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and National Public Radio. In addition to HKU, Sonnenberg has taught creative writing at the University of Michigan and Carleton College.

Michelle Sterling

Michelle Sterling received an MFA from Boston University. Her essays and fiction have appeared in Schlossghost, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, The Baffler (MIT Press), Bellevue Literary Review, Maisonneuve, LEMON, Matrix, among other publications, and her writing has been translated into German, Hungarian, and Polish. Her novel Camp Zero is in preparation for press. She has been a writing resident and fellow at major international sites, including Akademie Schloss Solitude, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, the Norman Mailer Colony, and the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Harold Bloom has called Henri Cole the “best poet of his generation.” He was born in Fukuoka, Japan, to an American father and French-Armenian mother, and raised in the U.S. From 1982 until 1988 he was executive director of The Academy of American Poets. Since that time he has held many teaching positions and been the artist-in-residence at various institutions, including Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, Davidson College, Brandeis University, Ohio State University, Reed College, Smith College, and The College of William and Mary. He has collaborated with the visual artists Jenny Holzer and Kiki Smith. And from 2010 to 2014, he was poetry editor of The New Republic. Cole currently teaches at Claremont McKenna College, and he has published nine collections of poetry.

Rita Dove was named the United States Poet Laureate by the Librarian of Congress, an office she held from 1993 to 1995. She received the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Dove received the National Humanities Medal / Charles Frankel Prize from President Bill Clinton, a Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal and a National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama. In 2015, she was the first American to receive the Poetry and People Prize in Guangdong, China. Dove has published ten volumes of poetry, a book of short stories, Fifth Sunday, a collection of essays, The Poet’s World, and a novel, Through the Ivory Gate. In the spring of 2018, Dove was named poetry editor of The New York Times Magazine.

Seamus Heaney

Seamus Heaney received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature. Heaney is recognised as one of the principal contributors to poetry during his lifetime. American poet Robert Lowell described him as “the most important Irish poet since Yeats”, and many others, including the academic John Sutherland, have said that he was “the greatest poet of our age.” Robert Pinsky has stated that “with his wonderful gift of eye and ear Heaney has the gift of the story-teller.” Upon his death in 2013, The Independent described him as “probably the best-known poet in the world.” Heaney was a professor at Harvard from 1981 to 1997, and its Poet in Residence from 1988 to 2006. From 1989 to 1994, he was also the Professor of Poetry at Oxford. In 1996, was made a Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 1998 was bestowed the title Saoi of the Aosdána. Other awards that he received include the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize (1968), the E. M. Forster Award (1975), the PEN Translation Prize (1985), the Golden Wreath of Poetry (2001), the T. S. Eliot Prize (2006) and two Whitbread Prizes (1996 and 1999). In 2011, he was awarded the Griffin Poetry Prize and in 2012, a Lifetime Recognition Award from the Griffin Trust. His literary papers are held by the National Library of Ireland.

Gish Jen is an American writer and speaker. She graduated from Harvard University with a BA in English and attended The University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop for the MFA in fiction. Jen is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been awarded a Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, a Guggenheim fellowship, a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study fellowship, and numerous other awards. Jen’s piece “Birthmates” was selected as one of The Best American Short Stories of The Century by John Updike. Several of her short stories have been reprinted in The Best American Short Stories, and her first novel, Typical American, was nominated for a National Books Critics’ Circle Award. Jen’s novels include, Mona in the Promised Land, The Love Wife and World and Town. She has also written a collection of short fiction, Who’s Irish?, and works of nonfiction, including Tiger Writing: Art, Culture, and the Interdependent Self and The Girl at the Baggage Claim: Explaining the East-West Culture Gap. She has published numerous pieces in The New York Times, The New Republic, and in other venues.

Li-Young Lee

Li-Young Lee is the recipient of a Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets, a Lannan Literary Award, a Whiting Writer’s Award, the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Award, the I. B. Lavan Award, three Pushcart Prizes, and grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship. Lee is the author of The Undressing (W. W. Norton, 2018); Behind My Eyes (W. W. Norton, 2008); Book of My Nights (BOA Editions, 2001), which won the 2002 William Carlos Williams Award; The City in Which I Love You (BOA Editions, 1990), which was the 1990 Lamont Poetry Selection; and Rose (BOA Editions, 1986), which won the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Poetry Award. Lee’s other work includes Breaking the Alabaster Jar: Conversations with Li-Young Lee (Edited by Earl G. Ingersoll, BOA Editions, 2006), a collection of twelve interviews with Lee at various stages of his artistic development; and The Winged Seed: A Remembrance (Simon and Schuster, 1995), a memoir which received an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation.

Shirley Geok-lin Lim

Shirley Geok-lin Lim was born in Malacca, Malaysia. She is an American writer of poetry, fiction, memoir, and literary criticism. Her first collection of poems, Crossing The Peninsula, published in 1980, won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize, a first both for an Asian and for a woman. Among many honours that she has received, the 1997 American Book Award was awarded to her for her memoir, Among the White Moon Faces: An Asian-American Memoir of Homelands. Lim has published critical books on Southeast and South Asian Anglophone Writing, including Nationalism and Literature: English Writing from the Philippines and Singapore and Writing South/East Asia in English: Against the Grain. Her numerous essays in postcolonial literature, Asian American cultural productions, and feminist theorization have been published in journals such as New Literary History, Feminist Studies, MELUS, and Journal of Commonwealth Literature. She has published more than thirty works, including the novels Joss and Gold and Sister Swing and her recent collections of poems, Do You Live In? and Ars Poetica for the Day.

Andrew Motion

Sir Andrew Motion was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2009. During the period of his laureateship, Motion founded the Poetry Archive, an on-line library of historic and contemporary recordings of poets reciting their own work. Motion has taught at the University of Hull, the University of East Anglia, Radley College, Johns Hopkins University, Royal Holloway, University of London. Motion has won, among many awards, the Arvon Prize, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, Eric Gregory Award, Whitbread Prize for Biography, the Dylan Thomas Prize and the 2015 Ted Hughes Award for new work in poetry.

Ellen W. Kaplan

Ellen W. Kaplan is Professor of Acting and Directing at Smith College, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Costa Rica, Romania and Hong Kong. She performs and directs internationally. Her acting won a prestigious BESSIE Award, and playing Gloucester in King Lear with Kristen Linklater. She has directed, among many plays, After Mrs. Rochester by Polly Teale, and Saul Bellow: Stories on Stage, at The Egg in Albany, NY. Professor Kaplan is also a playwright. Her award-winning play, Pulling Apart, was a 2004 finalist for the O’Neill Playwrights Conference. Other plays have been performed at Theatre Matrix/Los Angeles, the Cleveland Public Theatre, Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, in Northampton, MA, and, internationally, in Galway, Ireland, the Jewish State Theatre of Bucharest, and in Jerusalem. Her plays were twice named as finalists for the Massachusetts Playwriting Fellowship. Among her many publications are included creative nonfiction pieces, and she is the author of several articles on international theatre. Her poetry includes work in Deronda Review, Songs of Eretz, MomEgg, among many others. She has recently written a memoir, The Violet Hours.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the programme and admission to HKU, a candidate shall satisfy both the University Admission Requirements and the Programme Specific Requirements as listed below, noted here in brief outline:

  • shall comply with the HKU general regulations and requirements of admission;
  • hold a Bachelor’s degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and
  • possess prior experience and knowledge of creative writing in English and/or other languages;
  • shall participate in an admissions interview if required.

Application

  • Applications for this programme and payment of application fee (HK$300 per application) should be submitted online by clicking the ‘Apply’ below.
  • After submitting the online application, applicants are required to upload the required documents in supporting their application before the application deadline and within four weeks from the date of the creation of their application account.
  • Include all required supporting documents with a completed checklist form.

Concurrent Studies

General Regulation G6(b)(i) prohibits concurrent registration by a student of this University for any other post-secondary qualification either at this University or at any educational institution, unless approval of the Senate has been obtained in advance. Students in breach of this regulation may be required to discontinue their studies at this University.

Visa for Studies

If you are not a holder of a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card, a dependent visa, a work visa or an IANG (Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates) visa, you need to obtain a student visa before registration in the programme. A student visa is normally granted to those admitted for full-time studies. Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa and register in the programmes before the study begins.

  • For all current studies undertaken either in this University or other institutions which have yet to be completed, applicants should attach a copy of their most up-to-date transcripts.
  • TOEFL / IELTS [as appropriate] official score report for applicants from universities or comparable institutions outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English. Applicants who took the TOEFL should request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send an official score report to the School of English (University’s TOEFL code: 9671) directly. Original/certified copy of the examinee’s score record will not be accepted.
  • Two reference letters from academic referees.
  • A Creative Personal Statement with a minimum of 500-750 words. This Statement should briefly include:
  • an outline of your current postgraduate or professional work in progress/artistic project/design portfolio, or other developing signature work; and

In an effort to gain a better insight into the area of my interest, I capitalized on my last summer internship. Integrating myself into several dentistry settings, I gained first-hand knowledge for four weeks. Thoroughly enjoying the fresh knowledge-acquisition process, I worked on orthodontics and implants. Most importantly, I realized that dentists need to go beyond their core skills while establishing a compassionate association with their patients. Besides, I talked to experienced dentists to learn how frustrating and stressful certain patients and cases can be. All these experiences strengthened my desire to be a part of the dentistry world and take care of patients who are suffering.

Besides, I enhanced my foundational knowledge in dentistry, undertaking a job at a local clinic in Mumbai, India. This was an invaluable learning experience for me. During this phase, I came to realize the value that soft and hard skills in dentistry hold for the professionals. In particular, I carried out dental drills, which helped me gain manual dexterity. Apart from this, I was fascinated with the processes like laser frenectomy and other procedures that dentists carried out on the gums. This mechanism enabled the patient to gain normal movement of the lower lip, which previously got strained from the gum. This was the first time I saw how a CO2 laser works practically. I realized the depth of dentistry, as the professional used a specific dye and killed the bacteria around the oral region. Most importantly, the patient enjoyed a joyous experience, and I look forward to bestowing such gratifying feelings to my patients in the coming years.

I also noticed how the dentists developed a rapport with the patients at the outset, so that they felt at ease. It was interesting for me to study the different social elements in the life of each patient. However, the end goal of the dentists was to establish the rapport. Eventually, I realized that communication and interpersonal skills hold the secret for success for reputed dentists.

Apart from being consistent in my academics, I have demonstrated my competence in trekking, playing saxophone and flute. In the summer of 2016, I embarked on an expedition to Nepal, climbing the highest peak in the world. During this expedition, I combated both mental and physical challenges. My energetic character keeps me active. In several programs and assemblies, I have played the flute and the saxophone. I also love interacting with people, as it enhances my confidence and communication skills. Rather than playing solo, I prefer playing these instruments in small orchestras. This is where every musician works together, complementing each other’s efforts. The cohesive efforts result in a mellifluous symphony, the secret of which lies in teamwork.
