Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi

Who Is Narendra Modi?

Narendra Modi grew up in the Indian town of Vadnagar, the son of a street merchant. He entered politics as a youth and quickly rose through the ranks of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Hindu nationalist political party. Modi joined the mainstream Bharatiya Janata Party in 1987, eventually becoming national secretary. Elected prime minister of India in 2014, he earned reelection to the post five years later.

Narendra Modi was born in the small town of Vadnagar, in northern Gujarat, India. His father was a street merchant who struggled to support the family. Young Narendra and his brother sold tea near a bus terminal to help out. Though an average student in school, Modi spent hours in the library and was known as a strong debater. In his early teens, he joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist political party.

Modi had an arranged marriage at 18 but spent little time with his bride. The two eventually separated, with Modi claiming to be single for some time.

Early Political Career

In 1987, Narendra Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which stood for Hindu nationalism. His rise through the ranks was rapid, as he wisely chose mentors to further his career. He promoted privatization of businesses, small government and Hindu values. In 1995, Modi was elected BJP national secretary, a position from which he successfully helped settle internal leadership disputes, paving the way for BJP election victories in 1998.

Gulbarg Massacre and Alleged Complicity

In February 2002, while Modi served as chief minister of Gujarat, a commuter train was attacked, allegedly by Muslims. In retaliation, an attack was carried out on the Muslim neighborhood of Gulbarg. Violence spread, and Modi imposed a curfew granting police shoot-to-kill orders. After peace was restored, Modi’s government was criticized for the harsh crackdown, and he was accused of allowing the killings of more than 1,000 Muslims, along with the mass raping and mutilation of women. After two investigations contradicted one other, the Indian Supreme Court concluded there was no evidence Modi was at fault.

Narendra Modi was reelected chief minister of Gujarat in 2007 and 2012. Through those campaigns, Modi's hard-line Hinduism softened and he spoke more about economic growth, focusing on privatization and encouraging policies to shape India as a global manufacturing epicenter. He was credited with bringing prosperity and development to Gujarat, though others said he did little to alleviate poverty and improve living standards.

Elected Prime Minister

In June 2013, Modi was selected to head the BJP’s 2014 election campaign to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of India’s parliament), while a grassroots campaign was already in place to elect him prime minister. Modi campaigned hard, portraying himself as a pragmatic candidate capable of turning around India’s economy, while his critics portrayed him as a controversial and divisive figure.

In May 2014, Modi and his party were victorious, taking 282 of the 534 seats in the Lok Sabha. The victory marked a crushing defeat to the Indian National Congress, which had controlled country politics for most of the previous 60 years, and sent a message that India’s citizens were behind an agenda that moved away from a secular, socialist state to a more capitalist-leaning economy with Hindu nationalism at its core.

On May 26, 2014, Modi was sworn in as the 14th prime minister of India, the first to have been born after the country achieved independence from the U.K.

Since becoming prime minister, Modi has encouraged foreign businesses to invest in India. He has lifted various regulations — permits and inspections — so that businesses could grow more easily. He has decreased spending on social welfare programs and has encouraged the privatization of healthcare, although he has devised a policy on universal healthcare for those citizens with serious ailments. In 2014, he launched a "Clean India" campaign, which focused on sanitation and the construction of millions of toilets in rural areas.

His environmental policies have been lax, especially when those policies hamper industrial growth. He has lifted restrictions on protecting the environment and is more open to the use of genetically modified crops, despite protests from India's farmers. Under Modi's power, he has suppressed the influence of civil society organizations, such as Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, Avaaz, and other humanitarian groups, saying they prevent economic growth.

In terms of foreign policy, Modi has taken on a multilateral approach. He has participated in the BRICS, ASEAN and G20 summits, and has aligned himself with the United States, China, Japan and Russia to improve economic and political ties. He has also reached out to Islamic republics, most notably fostering diplomatic ties with Pakistan, although he has repeatedly labeled the country a "terrorist state" and an "exporter of terrorism."

Under his rule, Modi has substantially centralized his power compared to previous administrations.

Global Recognition

In 2016 Modi won the reader's poll as TIME 's Person of the Year. In previous years, he had received top ranking as one of the most influential political figures in the world in both TIME and Forbes Magazine . With high favorability ratings among Indian voters, Modi enjoyed a reputation for actively engaging citizens through social media and encouraging his own administration to stay active on its platforms.

Reelection and Protests

Following a landslide victory for the BJP, Modi was sworn in for his second term as prime minister on May 30, 2019.

By August, controversy was brewing when Modi announced his intention to revoke Article 370, a constitutional provision which had granted autonomy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir since 1949. Amid a reported communications blackout in the area, India's parliament voted to reclassify the Muslim-majority state as a union territory.

In December, parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) to fast-track citizenship for non-Muslim immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Although Modi lauded the bill as a means for helping religious minorities escape persecution, opponents viewed it as unconstitutional and discriminatory, leading to the eruption of violent protests throughout the country.

Meanwhile, a new problem was brewing with the spread of the coronavirus from its starting point in central China. Following a series of decrees designed to curb an outbreak in India, Modi in late March 2020 ordered all 1.3 billion people in the country to remain at home for the next three weeks.

After a vigorous campaign—in which Modi portrayed himself as a pragmatic candidate who could turn around India’s underperforming economy—he and the party were victorious, with the BJP winning a clear majority of seats in the chamber. Modi was sworn in as prime minister on May 26, 2014. Soon after he took office, his government embarked on several reforms, including campaigns to improve India’s transportation infrastructure and to liberalize rules on direct foreign investment in the country . Modi scored two significant diplomatic achievements early in his term. In mid-September he hosted a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping , the first time a Chinese leader had been to India in eight years. At the end of that month, having been granted a U.S. visa, Modi made a highly successful visit to New York City , which included a meeting with U.S. Pres. Barack Obama .

Recent News

As prime minister, Modi oversaw a promotion of Hindu culture and the implementation of economic reforms. The government undertook measures that would broadly appeal to Hindus, such as its attempt to ban the sale of cows for slaughter. The economic reforms were sweeping, introducing structural changes—and temporary disruptions—that could be felt nationwide. Among the most far-reaching was the demonetization and replacement of 500- and 1,000-rupee banknotes with only a few hours’ notice. The purpose was to stop “black money”—cash used for illicit activities—by making it difficult to exchange large sums of cash. The following year the government centralized the consumption tax system by introducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which superseded a confusing system of local consumption taxes and eliminated the problem of cascading tax. GDP growth slowed from these changes, though growth had already been high (8.2 percent in 2015), and the reforms succeeded in expanding the government’s tax base. Still, rising costs of living and increasing unemployment disappointed many as grandiose promises of economic growth remained unfulfilled.

This disappointment registered with voters during the elections in five states in late 2018. The BJP lost in all five states, including the BJP strongholds of Madhya Pradesh , Rajasthan , and Chhattisgarh . The rival Indian National Congress (Congress Party) won more state assembly seats than the BJP in all five elections. Many observers believed that this portended bad news for Modi and the BJP in the national elections set for the spring of 2019, but others believed that Modi’s charisma would excite the voters. Moreover, a security crisis in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2019, which escalated tensions with Pakistan to the highest point in decades, boosted Modi’s image just months before the election. With the BJP dominating the airwaves during the campaign—in contrast to the lacklustre campaign of Rahul Gandhi and Congress—the BJP was returned to power, and Modi became India’s first prime minister outside of the Congress Party to be reelected after a full term.

In his second term Modi’s government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, stripping it of autonomy in October 2019 and bringing it under the direct control of the union government. The move came under intense criticism and faced challenges in court, not only for the questionable legality of depriving Jammu and Kashmir’s residents of self-determination but also because the government severely restricted communications and movement within the region.

In March 2020, meanwhile, Modi took decisive action to combat the outbreak of COVID-19 in India, swiftly implementing strict nationwide restrictions to mitigate the spread while the country’s biotechnology firms became key players in the race to develop and deliver vaccines worldwide. As part of the effort to counter the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi undertook executive action in June to liberalize the agricultural sector, a move that was codified into law in September. Many feared that the reforms would make farmers vulnerable to exploitation, however, and protesters took to the streets in opposition to the new laws. Beginning in November, massive protests were organized and became a regular disruption, particularly in Delhi .

Modi’s policies backfired in 2021. Protests escalated (culminating in the storming of the Red Fort in January), and extraordinary restrictions and crackdowns by the government failed to suppress them. Meanwhile, despite the remarkably low spread of COVID-19 in January and February, by late April a rapid surge of cases caused by the new Delta variant had overwhelmed the country’s health care system. Modi, who had held massive political rallies ahead of state elections in March and April, was criticized for neglecting the surge. The BJP ultimately lost the election in a key battleground state despite heavy campaigning. In November, as protests continued and another set of state elections approached, Modi announced that the government would repeal the agricultural reforms.

Modi fulfilled a log-time promise of the BJP by announcing the new Ram Mandir —in what is considered by Hindus as the deity Ram’s birthplace—in October 2023 and by presiding over the consecration ( prana pratishtha ) ceremony on January 22, 2024. Even though a party or an alliance needs to win just over 272 seats to form the government at the center, Modi set an ambitious target of 400 seats for the BJP-led NDA alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The NDA, however, faced steep competition from the Congress-led INDIA alliance, contrary to expectations. The BJP won just 240 seats and failed to secure a majority on its own even though the NDA won 293 seats, which was enough to form the government and secure a third term for Modi as the country’s prime minister. This time, however, the BJP will depend on its allies for support as it did not manage to secure a majority.

Narendra Modi Latest News & Updates

On 26th May 2014, Narendra Damodardas Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. His journey to becoming Prime Minister began in Vadnagar, a small town in North Gujarat’s Mehsana district. He was born on 17th September 1950, three years after India's independence, making him the first Prime Minister born in independent India. He was the third child of Damodardas and Hiraba Modi, who lived modestly in a small single-storey house measuring about 40 feet by 12 feet. In his early years, Modi balanced his studies with helping at his family's tea stall as they struggled financially. Influenced by Swami Vivekananda, he developed a strong urge to serve society. Modi's thoughts and dreams as a child were different from those of his peers. Vadnagar, once a centre of Buddhist learning and spirituality, might have influenced him. From a young age, he felt a strong desire to make a difference in society. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda, he pursued spiritualism and was driven to realize Vivekananda's dream of making India a Jagat Guru, or world teacher. At 17, Modi left home to travel across India, immersing himself in its diverse cultures for two years. Upon returning, he was a changed person, with a clear vision for his future. He then moved to Ahmedabad and joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a socio-cultural organization focused on India's social and cultural revival. From 1972, Modi's life in Ahmedabad was rigorous, starting his day at 5 AM and continuing late into the night as he became a Pracharak for RSS. In the late 1970s, he actively participated in the movement to restore democracy in India during the Emergency period. During the 1980s, while fulfilling various roles within the Sangh, Modi distinguished himself as an exceptional organizer. In 1987, he took on the role of General Secretary of the BJP in Gujarat. His organizational prowess became evident as he led the BJP to its first victory in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections. Additionally, under his leadership, the BJP secured a strong second position in the 1990 Gujarat Assembly elections. In 1995, his organizational skills further propelled the BJP to win 121 seats in the Assembly elections. From 1995, Modi served as the National Secretary of the BJP, overseeing the party's activities in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. As the General Secretary Organization, he played a pivotal role in securing victory for the BJP in the 1998 Lok Sabha elections. In 1995, Modi took on the role of secretary for the BJP's national organization in New Delhi, then rose to become its general secretary three years later. He held this position for another three years until October 2001 when he replaced Keshubhai Patel as Gujarat's chief minister following Patel's criticized handling of the Bhuj earthquake aftermath, which claimed over 20,000 lives. In September 2001, a phone call from then-Prime Minister Vajpayee marked a significant turning point in Modi's life, transitioning him from the realm of organizational politics to the sphere of governance. Modi's entry into electoral politics came in February 2002 with a by-election that secured him a seat in the Gujarat state assembly. His subsequent political career was marked by both controversy and self-promoted achievements. He faced scrutiny for his role as chief minister during the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002, where over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, lost their lives following the Godhra train incident. The United States and the United Kingdom criticized Modi's involvement in the 2002 riots, leading to the denial of a diplomatic visa by the U.S. In the years following, although Modi himself avoided indictment or censure, some of his associates were found guilty of complicity in the events. Modi's administration faced allegations of extrajudicial killings, including a controversial case in 2004 involving individuals accused of plotting against him. Despite these challenges, Modi's political success in Gujarat solidified his position within the BJP, leading to victories in the 2002, 2007, and 2012 state assembly elections. Each time, he secured his seat and returned as chief minister, emphasizing growth and development in Gujarat. As the leader of the Gujarat government, Modi gained a strong reputation as an effective administrator, credited with driving the state's economy forward swiftly. His success in elections further bolstered his standing within the BJP, positioning him as a leading figure within the party and a potential contender for India's prime minister role. In June 2013, Modi was selected as the BJP's campaign leader for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Following an intense campaign where Modi positioned himself as a practical leader capable of revitalizing India's sluggish economy, he and his party secured victory in the elections, with the BJP winning a clear majority of seats in the chamber. Modi took office as prime minister on May 26, 2014, and wasted no time in initiating various reforms. These included efforts to enhance India's transportation infrastructure and liberalize rules on foreign investment. Early in his term, Modi achieved two significant diplomatic feats. In mid-September, he welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping on a visit to India, marking the first such visit by a Chinese leader in eight years. Later that month, Modi, having been granted a U.S. visa, made a successful trip to New York City, including a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. As prime minister, Modi promoted Hindu culture and implemented wide-ranging economic reforms. These reforms, while ambitious, caused some temporary disruptions nationwide. Notably, the sudden demonetization of 500- and 1,000-rupee banknotes aimed to combat the use of "black money." Additionally, the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) centralized the consumption tax system, simplifying the tax structure but slowing GDP growth. The disappointment over economic outcomes was evident during the late 2018 state elections, where the BJP faced losses in all five states, including its strongholds. However, a security crisis in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2019, which escalated tensions with Pakistan, boosted Modi's image just before the national elections. Despite initial concerns, Modi's charisma and the BJP's strong campaign secured their return to power, making Modi the first non-Congress Party prime minister to be re-elected after a full term. During his second term, Modi's government made significant changes, including revoking Jammu and Kashmir's special status in October 2019, bringing it under direct union government control. This move faced criticism and legal challenges due to concerns about legality and restrictions on communication and movement in the region. In March 2020, Modi took swift action to combat COVID-19, implementing strict nationwide measures. Indian biotech firms played a crucial role in vaccine development. To counter the pandemic's economic impact, Modi liberalized the agricultural sector in June 2020, leading to protests over fears of farmer exploitation. In 2021, protests intensified, and COVID-19 cases surged, overwhelming the healthcare system. Modi's handling of the crisis, including holding political rallies, faced criticism. Despite this, the BJP lost elections in key states. In November, amidst ongoing protests, Modi announced the repeal of the agricultural reforms. In October 2023, Modi fulfilled a BJP promise by announcing the construction of the Ram Mandir at Ram's birthplace, with the consecration ceremony held in January 2024. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, despite Modi's ambitious target of 400 seats for the BJP-led NDA alliance, they only won 240 seats. Although the NDA secured enough seats to form a government, Modi's BJP will rely on allies for support, marking his third term as prime minister.

Narendra Modi – Major Achievements and Decisions

Narendra Modi was serving as the Prime Minister of India. Here are some of the major achievements and decisions associated with his tenure up to that point:

Demonetization:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi implemented demonetization, the elimination of high-value banknotes, with the aim of stimulating the economy and bringing the shadow economy into the formal sector. After December 31, 2016, both 500 and 1,000 rupee notes lost their legal tender status.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill:

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill, introduced by the Modi administration, replaced more than a dozen federal and state levies over seventy years since India’s independence. This move increased government revenue by bringing millions of firms into the tax system. Businesses are required to upload invoices to a website for tax compliance, and companies without tax identification numbers risk losing clients.

Abolition of Article 370:

The Modi government proposed splitting the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, while also repealing Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This change allowed foreigners to purchase real estate in Jammu and Kashmir and opened state government positions and some college admissions to non-state residents.

Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA):

The Modi government passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which facilitates the acquisition of Indian citizenship by persecuted non-Muslim minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. However, this act sparked protests across the nation due to its controversial nature.

Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act:

The triple talaq bill, approved by Parliament and signed into law by President Ram Nath Kovind, criminalized the practice of instant divorce by Muslim men. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, declared such forms of divorce null and unlawful, making it illegal to utter “talaq” three times in a row, whether verbally, in writing, via SMS, WhatsApp, or other electronic communication apps.

Digital India:

Goods and Services Tax (GST):

The implementation of the GST was a significant economic reform. It aimed to simplify the taxation system by replacing multiple taxes with a single nationwide tax.

Surgical Strikes:

India conducted surgical strikes in response to terrorist attacks, particularly the Uri attack in 2016. These strikes were seen as a strong response to cross-border terrorism.

Narendra Modi Entry into Politics

Modi’s foray into politics began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization. He dedicated himself to the RSS and quickly rose through its ranks, honing his leadership skills and gaining a deep understanding of grassroots politics.

In 2001, Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, a state in western India. His tenure as Chief Minister was marked by his emphasis on development and efficient governance. Under his leadership, Gujarat witnessed significant economic growth, infrastructure development, and improvements in various social indicators.

Narendra Modi Political Career:

  • India’s state of emergency, which was imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in June 1975, lasted until 1977.
  • Many of her political rivals were imprisoned and opposition organisations were outlawed during this time, known as “the Emergency.”
  • In order to coordinate the opposition to the Emergency in Gujarat, the RSS committee known as the “Gujarat Lok Sangharsh Samiti” nominated Modi general secretary.
  • The RSS was prohibited soon after. In Gujarat, Modi was compelled to live in hiding and regularly disguised himself to escape being apprehended, once masquerading as a monk and once as a Sikh.
  • He got involved in the printing of anti-government booklets, sent them to Delhi, and planned protests.
  • He also worked to raise money for political activists and refugees as well as to establish a network of safe houses for people on the government’s wanted list.
  • Sangharsh Ma Gujarat (In the Struggles of Gujarat), a book written by Modi during this time period, is a Gujarati-language account of the Emergency’s events.
  • While serving in this capacity, Modi got to know socialist and labour union activist George Fernandes as well as a number of other prominent national politicians.
  • In 1978, Modi was appointed an RSS sambhag pracharak, responsible for managing operations in Surat and Vadodara. In 1979, he moved to Delhi to work for the RSS, where he conducted research and penned the organization’s history of the Emergency.
  • He soon returned to Gujarat, where the RSS put him in charge of the BJP in 1985. In the 1987 municipal election in Ahmedabad, which the BJP easily won, Modi assisted in organising the campaign. According to his biographers, Modi’s careful organisation was the key to the victory.
  • Modi was chosen for this position as a result of his work during the Ahmedabad election.
  • The RSS decided to do this after L. K. Advani was elected president of the BJP in 1986. Later in 1987, Modi was chosen as the Gujarat chapter of the BJP’s organising secretary.

Prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi was designated the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in September 2013. Several BJP stalwarts, including BJP founding member L. K. Advani, expressed opposition to Modi’s candidature, citing concerns about those who were “concerned with their personal agendas”. In the BJP’s 2009 general election campaign, Modi was a key player. Many BJP supporters claimed they would have chosen a different party if Modi had not been the prime ministerial candidate. Unusual for a BJP electoral campaign, Modi was the focal point. Narendra Modi was the subject of a referendum during the election.

Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of India

In 2014, Narendra Modi led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a resounding victory in the general elections, securing an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha (lower house of parliament). This victory propelled him to the position of India’s Prime Minister.

As Prime Minister, Modi launched ambitious initiatives aimed at transforming India. The flagship program, “Make in India,” focused on promoting manufacturing and boosting job creation. “Digital India” aimed to harness technology for the country’s progress, while “Skill India” aimed to enhance the employability of the Indian workforce.

Another significant initiative was the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a unified tax system that streamlined India’s complex tax structure. Additionally, Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) to promote cleanliness and sanitation across the country.

Modi was announced as the BJP’s nominee for prime minister in the 2019 general election on October 13, 2018. Amit Shah, the BJP’s president, led the party’s political campaign. As a candidate for Varanasi in the Lok Sabha election, Modi defeated Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP), who ran as a candidate for the SP-BSP coalition, by a margin of 479,505 votes. The National Democratic Alliance, which won the election with 353 members in the Lok Sabha (the BJP won 303 seats alone), overwhelmingly chose Modi to serve as prime minister for a second term.

Narendra Modi Foreign Policy and Global Presence

Under Modi’s leadership, India’s foreign policy underwent a significant shift. He initiated numerous international visits, strengthening India’s relationships with key nations worldwide. Modi’s diplomacy emphasized economic cooperation, strategic partnerships, and cultural exchanges.

Notably, he played a crucial role in addressing climate change by championing the International Solar Alliance. He also took proactive measures to enhance India’s presence on the global stage, advocating for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.

Narendra Modi Defence Policy

Under Modi, India’s nominal military spending grew steadily. The military budget shrank under Modi’s leadership, both as a percentage of GDP and after inflation. The military budget was heavily weighted towards human costs. Commentators claimed that the budget was preventing India from modernising its military.

Narendra Modi Environmental Policy

The Ministry of Environment and Forests was renamed to the “Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change” when Modi named his cabinet, and its funding in the first budget of his government was more than half. A number of legislation pertaining to environmental protection and others pertaining to industrial activities were deleted or weakened by the new ministry. Additionally, the government attempted to dissolve the National Board for Wildlife in order to remove NGOs’ representatives, but the Supreme Court of India blocked this effort.

Narendra Modi Criticism and Controversies

While Narendra Modi has garnered immense popularity and support, his tenure has not been without criticism and controversies. Critics have accused him of not doing enough to address socio-economic disparities, religious tensions, and human rights issues.

Modi’s handling of certain incidents, such as the 2002 Gujarat riots, has been a subject of intense debate. While his supporters credit him with fostering economic growth and a strong national security apparatus, his detractors argue that he has failed to promote social harmony and protect the rights of religious minorities.

Narendra Modi Early Life

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hails from a small town in northern Gujarat. He earned his Master’s degree in political science from Gujarat University in Ahmedabad. During the early 1970s, he became a member of the pro-Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and even organized a local branch of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, which is the student wing of the RSS.

Narendra Modi steadily progressed within the RSS organization, and his association with them played a crucial role in shaping his future political career. In 1987, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and within a year, the Gujarat branch of the party appointed him as their general secretary.

Over the years, Narendra Modi played a significant role in strengthening the party’s influence in the state. His efforts came to fruition when he helped the BJP secure victory in the 1995 state legislative assembly elections. This triumph allowed the BJP to form the first-ever BJP-controlled government in India in March of that year.

In 1990, Narendra Modi was among the BJP members who participated in a coalition government in the state. Unfortunately, the BJP’s hold on the state administration lasted only until September 1996.

Narendra Modi Educational Qualification

Narendra Modi completed his SSC in 1967 from the SSC board in Gujarat. He pursued a BA in Political Science through a distance education program at Delhi University in Delhi. In 1983, he earned his PG MA from Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, as per the information in his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission.

Narendra Modi Age

Narendra Modi, India’s 14th and current Prime Minister, was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat. His full name is Narendra Damodardas Modi. As of September 17, 2023, he is 73 years old and remains an active and influential leader. Modi hails from a modest background, with his family owning a small grocery store.

He has exemplified that one’s achievements are not limited by their caste, creed, or place of residence. Interestingly, he became India’s first Prime Minister with a living mother when he took office.

Narendra Modi is well-known for his strategic skills and represents the Varanasi constituency in the Lok Sabha. He also served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat State from 2001 to 2014 before becoming the Prime Minister.

He is a member of parliament from the Varanasi district in Uttar Pradesh and is affiliated with both the right-wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Notably, he holds the record for being the Prime Minister for the longest time, excluding the Indian National Congress.

Narendra Modi Political Career

Narendra Modi’s journey within the BJP began in 1995 when he was appointed as the party’s national organization’s secretary. In 1998, he took on the role of the organization’s general secretary. He held this position for three years.

However, in October 2001, he replaced Keshubhai Patel, a fellow BJP member who faced criticism for his handling of the Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat, which tragically claimed over 20,000 lives that year.

In February 2002, Modi entered his first election and secured a seat in the Gujarat state assembly. His political career was marked by both controversy and self-promotion. One particularly contentious episode was his tenure as Gujarat’s chief minister during the 2002 riots following the Godhra train fire, where he faced accusations of either encouraging violence or not doing enough to prevent the loss of over 1,000 lives, primarily among Muslims.

Despite these controversies, the BJP achieved significant electoral victories. In December 2002, the party triumphed in the legislative assembly elections, securing 127 out of 182 seats, including one for Modi. They went on to win the state assembly elections in 2007 and 2012, securing 117 and 115 seats, respectively.

Modi was re-elected as chief minister on both occasions. During his time as Gujarat’s governor, Modi established a reputation as an effective leader, contributing to the state’s economic growth.

Modi’s success in elections and his position as a prominent leader within the BJP raised his profile and made him a potential candidate for the role of India’s prime minister.

Narendra Modi Achievements

Demonetization

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi believed that scrapping high-value banknotes would boost the economy and bring the country’s hidden economy into the open. As per this policy, the 500 and 1,000 rupee notes lost their validity after December 31, 2016.

In the 70 years since India’s independence, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaced over a dozen different taxes, thanks to the Modi administration. This move increased government revenue by including millions of businesses in the tax system. Businesses must upload their invoices to a website to comply with the tax, and those without tax identification numbers risk losing customers.

Abolition of Article 370

The Modi administration proposed dividing the state into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and repealed Article 370, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This change allowed foreigners to buy property in Jammu and Kashmir and opened state government positions and some college admissions to non-residents.

Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)

The Modi government introduced the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which makes it easier for persecuted non-Muslim minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan to obtain Indian citizenship. This act, passed by Parliament about eight months ago, has sparked nationwide protests.

Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act

The triple talaq bill, approved by Parliament and granted approval by President Ram Nath Kovind, makes it illegal for Muslims to use instant divorce. The Act declared instant and irrevocable divorces, like saying “talaq” three times in a row, unlawful, whether spoken or through electronic means.

Ayodhya Ram Mandir

The Supreme Court allowed Hindus to build a temple in Ayodhya, ending years of legal disputes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated construction at the birthplace of Lord Ram in Ayodhya in a grand ceremony, fulfilling a decades-long goal of his political party.

India’s Modi discusses the Ukraine war with Austria’s leader a day after meeting Putin

Speaking during a visit to Austria, Narendra Modi said “problems cannot be solved on the battlefield”, while discussing Ukraine during a news conference. Modi made the statements during a news conference which marked what he said was the first visit to Austria by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years. He added that India was “ready to provide all possible support” to achieve peace in Ukraine.

VIENNA (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the war in Ukraine on Wednesday with the leader of Austria, an ally of Kyiv that has a policy of military neutrality, emphasizing the need for diplomacy a day after he met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Modi met Chancellor Karl Nehammer on what he said was the first visit to Austria by an Indian prime minister in 41 years.

Nehammer told reporters it was important to understand India’s position on Ukraine and convey Europe’s concerns. He said it was an “important and significant signal” that India took part in a summit in Switzerland last month and added that Austria could act as a “bridge-builder” in helping move forward peace efforts.

Modi’s visit to Moscow, a longtime partner for New Delhi, was his first since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

While in Moscow, Modi reiterated India’s neutral stance on the invasion. He also alluded to an attack on Monday when Russian missiles struck across Ukraine , damaging the largest children’s hospital in Kyiv and killing at least 42 people nationwide, including some children.

“Be it war, a struggle or a terrorist attack, every person who believes in humanity, when there is loss of life, he is pained,” Modi said Tuesday. “When innocent children are killed, when we see innocent children dying, then the heart pains. And that pain is very horrible.”

Image

In his comments Wednesday, Modi said in general terms that he and Nehammer had “extensive discussions” on all the world’s conflicts, including Ukraine. He said that “problems cannot be solved in the battlefield” and that “the loss of innocent lives is not acceptable, wherever it may take place.”

“India and Austria both lay emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy for the rapid restoration of peace and stability,” he said. “Both of us are ready to provide all possible support to achieve this.”

Modi and Nehammer took no questions from journalists.
