Synthesis Soprano LE integrated amplifier

Synthesis Soprano LE integrated amplifier

Synthesis is an Italian electronics company with a strong emphasis on valve designs, and an equally strong bias toward value for money. The range is comprehensive, with more than 20 models across four separate ranges (and more to follow). The Soprano and Soprano LE integrated amplifiers represent the entry-point for the brand.

The Soprano is a small, elegant, and somewhat minimalist integrated amplifier with a solid-state preamp stage and a 12-watt valve power amplifier section that uses a quartet of EL84 valves. The EL84 is perhaps less well-known in domestic audio circles compared to the more powerful EL34, but the little EL84 power-pentode is a popular choice in some guitar-playing circles, most notably for the ‘chimey’ sound of the Vox AC15 and the Marshall ‘Model 1974’ combo amps from the 1960s and are still highly prized today. The Soprano amp includes a built-in AKM-based DAC that supports PCM audio to 24‑bit, 192kHz precision (on USB; 24/96 on optical and coaxial S/PDIF), and a MM phono stage; moving coil cartridges and DSD are not supported, although given the relative affordability of the Synthesis, it seems unlikely that it will be partnered in systems where the absence of a MC input or DSD replay will be a problem. Similarly, the lone line input might have been a stumbling block in the days of separate CD player, FM tuner, and tape recorder, but I suspect that most Soprano amps will be used with a record player and a laptop, and for the most part, that’s how I used it.

, Synthesis Soprano LE integrated amplifier

The Limited Edition version of the Soprano is restricted to just 200 pieces. It differs from the standard version in terms of finish (the brushed aluminium or black front panel is replaced with a more refined titanium look), higher quality RCA input and loudspeaker output terminals, and a limited-edition plate with designer and owner Luigi Lorenzon’s signature (and a certificate of ownership). More significantly, the power has been upped from 12W to 15W per channel.

The four EL84s sit to the left of the front panel, glowing away nicely, but kept from prying fingers by a horizontally-vaned, black powder-coated protector/heatsink that runs the length of the amp (it’s removed with two small Allen bolts, but actually looks good in situ). Controls are limited to five small push-buttons (with accompanying LEDs) for channel selection, and a larger push-button for power, plus a remote eye and a larger power LED above the remote control. The whole unit is narrower than most modern audio and, combining that with the titanium front fascia of the LE, gives the Soprano a timeless and classy appearance, akin to classic Quad valve devices of the 1950s.

Affordable valve audio equipment is usually dismissed with a flourish by the cognoscenti for being either badge-engineered off-the-shelf Far Eastern products, or ‘designed in Europe, built in a sweatshop’ designs. Aside from the somewhat banal nature of this gripe (especially when it arrives typed on a laptop or smartphone designed in the US and built in Asia), it’s simply not true here. Every single piece of the Synthesis range is designed and built in Italy. Not ‘assembled’… built. Managing to build both up to a standard and down to a price is difficult and admirable, but it’s something that Synthesis does well, and the Soprano LE is the result. In fact, were it not for the very slightly clunky feel of the push-buttons, the light touch to the volume knob, and a remote control that is functional but lacks the ‘blunt instrument’ heft of the big-boys in the audio world, you’d put the Synthesis Soprano SE close to £3,500 or £4,000.

You’d make the same mistake after powering it up, too. OK, fifteen watts per channel is not what you’d call a ‘powerhouse’ and that places constraints on the listener in terms of loudspeaker efficiency. Any loudspeaker with a genuine sensitivity figure in the mid-90s or above is perfect, and those in the 88-95dB sensitivity range will be conditionally fine (depending on room size and ultimate listening levels). The Fyne Audio range (such as the F702 tested in last issue) would make a perfect combination, for example. Also, the amplifier goes ‘creamy’ and slightly ‘chimey’ (harmonically rich in the upper-mids and treble) rather than ‘edgy’ as it reaches its limits, so the occasional wig-out at volume is possible and actually quite enjoyable.

This is very much a ‘grace’ and ‘space’ amplifier; it also does ‘pace’ well (Lorenzon listens to a lot of rock music both in development and for his personal enjoyment, so he wouldn’t let a beauteous but rhythmically flabby sounding amplifier leave his test-bench), but what first attracts you to the Soprano LE are its rich, harmonic textures, fine detail retrieval, and exceptionally well-shaped soundstage; not too big, not too small.

Like many reviewers faced with a relatively low-powered integrated amplifier that doesn’t cost as much as a moderately-successful racehorse, the listening session commenced with something of a soft start – ‘Help Me’ from Court and Sparkby Joni Mitchell [Asylum] – as this is not a densely populated mix and Mitchell’s voice is so well-known it’s easy to determine whether the basic boxes are ticked. And they were ticked, and ticked well; so well, in fact, I played the track three times in a row, running from the USB input of the DAC, from the line input and from the MM phono stage, playing an early pressing. In all three cases, it sounded at once extremely natural, very rich and enjoyable, and consistent from source to source. I preferred the vinyl version the best and the ripped to computer version the least, but that itself is consistent with my findings elsewhere.

, Synthesis Soprano LE integrated amplifier

Having passed the recruit fitness test, it was time for basic training and review bootcamp. I marched out my usual range of recordings in order of difficulty. And the Soprano SE passed the test each and every time. OK, so this is not the first choice for anyone who thinks ‘dynamic range’ means ‘playing Mahler at window-shattering levels’, but what was surprising is just how much dynamic range and bottom end energy can be extracted from 15 watts when done properly. I have almost worn out the digits on Trentemøller’s ‘Chameleon’ [The Last Resort, Poker Flat] because of the intensity, speed, and depth of those stentorian notes mid-way through the track. Granted none of these sounds exist in nature, but they are a perfect indicator of bass depth and precision; if a sub-40Hz tone produced by a PCM-based synthesiser (that is as close to a square wave as it’s possible to make without destroying a loudspeaker) is perfectly rendered, it follows by inference (and confirmed by listening) that the same applies to tympani and deep organ pedal notes. And on playing ‘Chameleon’ the Soprano LE did exceptionally well, defining the attack and release of the bass notes perfectly, all the while not undermining the range of sounds in the mid and treble.

I’d hesitate to say this is the most neutral amplifier you can buy because the sound it makes is so sublime and satisfying. Any yet, neither does it go for the warm ‘comfort blanket’ sound of over-rich valve amplifiers. In short, it toes just the right balance. In fact, if the Soprano’s harmonically rich and elegant sound, plus its exceptional imaging, represent a deviation from strict neutrality, it’s a deviation that I’m sure many will happily go for. This also means the Soprano covers its tracks well, too, because you are enjoying the sound too much. In other words, it’s a lovely, sweet-sounding amplifier that makes you want to listen to music more… who really cares if that is not strictly accurate?

Perhaps the biggest plus-point for the Soprano LE sound is its ability to ‘scale’ well. Put something fey and small sounding its way [Feist’s ‘Mushaboom’, Let It Die, Polydor] and it will make it seem small, close, and intimate. Then flip over to a huge wall of sound [Muse’s ‘Invincible’, Black Holes & Revelations, Helium-3] and you can almost hear the stadium (or a haunted house ride full of sci-fi skyscrapers and evil pumpkin teddy bears, if you watch Muse’s crazy video). That ability to move from the tonsils of a breathy girl-with-guitar singer to a large orchestral piece, to post-modern progressive rock with a distinctly sci-fi feel is the mark of something really good, and the Soprano LE does it so very, very well.

We haven’t compared the Soprano LE to the more commonplace non-LE version because the price differential between standard and LE is relatively slim, meaning there’s almost no point looking at the Soprano right now. Maybe when the 200 LE models are sold, we’ll revisit the Soprano in its standard guise; as it’s possible the great sound of the LE is built on the similarly great sounding foundation of the Soprano itself.

Regardless, the Synthesis Soprano SE is a lovely little amplifier in its own right, and those 200 owners will be getting something truly magical. If your speakers are sensitive souls, they will thank you for letting them work with so refined a Soprano.

I bought this amplifier while looking to upgrade my system and make my first entry into the world of vacuum tube (valve) amps. Whilst going through several products over the phone with AS's very helpful Cliff we settled on this little beauty as it also has an in-built DAC. The sound is exquisite and brings the best out of my Pro-ject RPM9 and provides plenty of punch for my pair of Wilson Benesch Curve speakers. The combination is superb. The only down side is that the volume level resets to zero when switched back on.

I sold this lovely amp back in June but when I saw my buyer was selling it again I snapped it up. (He wanted to go down the 300b route.) Now I have gone down a different route using an Auralic Altair as a preamp into a NuPrime power amp so it is for sale again. It is the Limited Edition version of the Synthesis Soprano valve amp. Bought in mid August last year. Basically the Synthesis LE is a 15w amp using four EL84 valves. Not only does it look great but it sounds great whether you're using the built in DAC or phono stage. The standard model outputs 12w whereas the LE outputs 15w. Finish is titanium rather than black and sockets are upgraded too. Full details can be found here: https://www.henleyaudio.co.uk/products/Soprano-LE As can be seen from the photographs condition is as new and includes all original accessories, remote, manual, mains lead and packaging. Designed and manufactured in Italy it looks as good as it sounds. A new LE costs £1449 but you could have mine delivered for less than the lower powered standard model. £800 including delivery to UK mainland. More than happy for you to come and have a listen and collect. Review here: https://hifiplus.com/articles/synthe...ted-amplifier/
Need a new preamp so open to offers
No longer for sale
Back up for sale. Condition as described above. Lovely amp with very good phono stage and DAC. Try a new year offer.
Another review. https://www.avforums.com/reviews/syn...-review.19433/
There are two Soprano LE amps on ebay. One 2nd hand for £995 and one open box for £1229 which makes mine something of a bargain.

Wow! Why hasn't this gone yet. It's a lovely sounding amp and if I wasn't wedded to EL34s to drive my difficult load speakers I'd be very tempted at this price. EL84 are a really sweet, musical tube
Audiophile Tosher
Thanks Malcolm. It does sound particularly sweet with female vocalists but can also make the settee vibrate with the likes of Massive Attack and The XX It has to go so now reduced to £750 inc mainland UK delivery or meet up within 60 miles of Stroud Gloucestershire.
I am looking for a decent pre amplifier. Must have phono stage and remote control. Get in touch if you have anything you'd like to trade.
I have now found a preamp and the Synthesis has gone to ebay.

The Soprano provides a minimum of 15W per channel, current output from a pair of EL84s in Ultra-linear (UL) - push/pull operation. It features a whole new design specifically for the output transformer, as a result you receive a rich soundstage but with an authority that belies its 15W/each.

  • Phono stage
  • SPDIF inputs (coaxial and optical)
  • Output transformer
  • Megane chassis construction
  • Selected tubes. All tubes are selected after 2 stages of heating. A fully computerized machine controls the process and at the end, it selects the perfect tubes which are then matched for a perfect balance.

New tube integrated amplifier of the Italian company Synthesis.

Design features:

– USB input, optical and coaxial inputs (AKM DAC, up to 24 bit / 192 kHz).

– Phono input for MM recorders.

– A wide-frequency output transformer, custom-made specifically for Soprano amplifiers.

– Rigid metal chassis to protect the circuit from vibrations.

– Gold-plated screw connectors.

– Ceramic terminals of increased reliability.

– Selected components of the audiophile class.

- pairwise selection of lamps is carried out after a two-stage warm-up using a computer program.

The company claims that the Soprano is capable of meeting the expectations of the most demanding audiophile.

EL84 / 6BQ5 lamps are used in the amplifier. Special attention should be paid to the built-in Soprano TAP on the AKM chip, which allows you to connect digital sources via USB, coaxial or optical inputs with a resolution of up to 24 bits / 192 kHz.

On board the new amplifier there is also a Phono-input for LP-players with cartridges of the MM type.

Among other things, the manufacturer focuses on a high-quality output transformer created specifically for the Soprano, which allows for the most accurate reproduction of music.

The distortion of the amplifier is 1% at a frequency of 1 kHz at maximum power. The signal/noise ratio is 90 dB.

– Weight: 10.0 kg

The sound of the Synthesis Soprano is warm and rich, which fully meets the expectations that most of us have in relation to tube amplifiers. The stage is well drawn, and the deep bass gives it depth. But at the same time, the sound is detailed and transparent, which makes it easy to perceive any music. The amplifier is comfortable for listening. At the same time, the mid-frequency range plays a leading role, it is rich and saturated. This provides excellent transmission of vocals as well as acoustic instruments. At the same time, the bass is very well coordinated with the middle frequencies and does not overlap them even on the most energetic compositions.

The Synthesis Soprano is an excellent proposition for those looking for an affordable tube amplifier. The amplifier has a wide range of inputs, including for digital sources. And as an additional "bonus" - an input for a vinyl disc player.

Test Synthesis Soprano : ampli Hifi à tubes à l'italienne, avec DAC, préampli phono et en pure classe A

Soprano Synthesis test ONmagFR

5 Classical Music Albums You Can Listen to Right Now

Yunchan Lim’s collection of Chopin piano études, a new recording of Terry Riley’s “In C” and works by Marc-André Hamelin are among the highlights.

A collage of images with portions of five classical album covers stacked vertically.

Chopin: Études

Yunchan Lim, piano (Decca)

The pianist Yunchan Lim, who recently turned 20, debuted at Carnegie Hall in February with an old-school program : all 24 of Chopin’s études. His first album on the Decca label, playing those same 24 devilishly difficult pieces — 12 each in Op. 10 and 25 — is old-school, too. The cover photo, shot on film, has Lim nearly engulfed in moody shadow, an image that, along with the font, evokes classical music’s glamorous mid-20th century.

The aim seems to be to position him as an heir to that era’s keyboard titans. It’s hardly a difficult task. After Lim’s Carnegie performance, and his dazzling winning rounds at the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, it’s no surprise to find him in total command on this recording, balancing note-by-note clarity with long-phrase lyricism amid staggering technical demands.

Even in fiery études, he is calm as he exposes the panoply of voices that emerge from just two hands. His rubato breathes naturally yet energetically; there’s a vitality and sense of forward motion even in slower pieces. And Lim’s soft playing is particularly sensitive, as in the pleading quality he brings to a tiny pianissimo quintuplet in Op. 10, No. 9. The album loses little of the excitement of a live concert while adding more control, transparency and polish. It’s a triumph. ZACHARY WOOLFE

Maya Beiser, cello (Islandia Music)

For the 60th anniversary of “In C,” Terry Riley’s crusading, proto-minimalist work, the intrepid cellist Maya Beiser has reimagined the piece ingeniously. As written, “In C,” which consists of a series of 53 short musical motifs, can be played by any group of musicians on any instruments, and lasts as long as their individual decisions about how long to repeat those motifs.

Beiser, by contrast, creates loops out of the motifs and stacks them atop one another in gradually evolving paragraphs, with a near-constant pulse on the cello’s lowest string undergirding the activity above. She adds subtle live drumming in places (by Shane Shanahan and Matt Kilmer), as well as a few wordless vocal tracks.

The result is transfixing. In place of the controlled chaos that usually prevails in performances of “In C,” Beiser creates a sound picture that is sleek and orderly, Riley’s brief themes rising to the surface, then disappearing through the dark whirl of sound. She also plays with the cello’s timbre to introduce just enough variation to keep the sound picture from becoming too uniform. At times the pulses fall away, leaving the listener in suspension.

Above all, this version of “In C” gives an emotional impression different from any I’ve heard: moody and introspective, but also, by the end, quietly uplifting. DAVID WEININGER

Hamelin: New Piano Works

Marc-André Hamelin, piano (Hyperion)

The Canadian virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin is persuasive in a wide span of repertoire that includes C.P.E. Bach , Frederic Rzewski and William Bolcom . He also composes. His 1998 album “The Composer-Pianists” was a sweeping survey that also included selections from his 12 Etudes in all the Minor Keys, which he released in their entirety in 2010.

His previous offerings of his own music were rich, but his latest self-portrait album is on another level. As before, he is a devoted tipper-of-the-cap: This set’s opening “Variations on a Theme of Paganini,” from 2011, nods to one of Rachmaninoff’s riffs on that much-adapted Caprice No. 24. It’s all good fun, but there is another quality on this set that moves well beyond a game of spot the quotation. Call it a more sumptuous synthesis.

Even as Hamelin’s “Suite à l’Ancienne” (2019) and “Pavane Variée” (2014) blend vintage forms and tunes with advanced harmonic trappings, his well-documented affection for jazz also peeks through. That’s not so surprising, since he has played jazz-influenced sonatas and études by Nikolai Kapustin, too. But Hamelin’s particular feel for incorporating blues sonorities strikes me as less of a pastiche than Kapustin’s — even when he is mixing American textures with 16th-century chanson . It’s probably time to add the epaulet of “rising composer” to this pianist’s already imposing biography. SETH COLTER WALLS

‘Orchestras’

Bill Frisell Trio; Brussels Philharmonic; Umbria Jazz Orchestra (Blue Note)

The prolific and protean guitarist Bill Frisell and the composer-arranger Michael Gibbs have a relationship that stretches back nearly half a century. Despite a raft of collaborations, a full-scale orchestral project has eluded them until now. This album contains two concerts by Frisell’s trio: one with the Brussels Philharmonic (under Alexander Hanson), the other with the Umbria Jazz Orchestra (under Manuele Morbidini). All the arrangements are by Gibbs, mostly of Frisell originals, with a couple of Gibbs’s own pieces and a few standards thrown in.

Undertakings like these can easily fall victim to bloat and inelegance, but “Orchestras” feels balanced and natural. Gibbs’s arrangements, dense yet spacious, leave space for Frisell, the bassist Thomas Morgan and the drummer Rudy Royston to weave nimbly through the textures. Some of the arrangements are breathtaking: Listen to how the trio and Brussels orchestra seem to expand and push each other upward in Frisell’s “Throughout” and “Richter 858, No. 7.”

For all the chops on display here, the album’s most affecting moment is the simplest: the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome,” with the guitarist subtly decorating the jazz orchestra’s chorale-like accompaniment. Frisell has been playing the song for much of his life, and recently said he would keep doing so “till there is no need anymore.” DAVID WEININGER

‘Rose in Bloom’

Erin Morley, soprano; Gerald Martin Moore, piano (Orchid Music)

A debut solo album based on birds and flowers might seem hackneyed; “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking,” as Miranda Priestly would say. But that’s not the case with a talent on the order of the coloratura soprano Erin Morley.

Her voice is opalescent, a font of sheer, innocent colors, with bell-like clarity, pristine runs and notes in alt that spin like mad. Her singing has an instrumental purity, but it is also tenderly observant. A Saint-Saëns vocalise has such specificity that you almost forget it has no words. There’s humor, too: In Milhaud’s “Tais-toi, Babillarde,” Morley mimics a chatty swallow with cheeky exuberance.

Morley and the pianist Gerald Martin Moore shift swiftly through styles and moods. In one compelling sequence, they thread together nightingale songs — the vibrant sensuality of a Rimsky-Korsakov romance, the intriguing mystery of a Berg lied, the resplendence of the Saint-Saëns vocalise — with radiant weightlessness.

Ricky Ian Gordon’s new song cycle “Huit Chansons de Fleurs” comes in the middle and slows the program’s rapid pace. His effortless prosody, soaring melodies and generous spirit suffuse the music, even turning a poem of mournful decay, “Her Garden,” into a tribute to the love shared with someone who has died. Morley gently tugs on the rhythm and shades the delicate melody, sounding both technically immaculate and emotionally fragile in an album of predictable loveliness and unexpected poignancy.
