Direct speech contains words that are actually uttered by the speaker and are enclosed in inverted commas known as quotation marks, quotes or speech marks. Working through these printable worksheets on quotation marks in direct speech, you need to place a comma after the introductory reporting clause. The end punctuation marks: ? and !, used with a question or an exclamation respectively, must also be placed before the closing quotation marks. Use these guidelines to rewrite the sentences in this set, and punctuate each of the given sentences with success.

These quotation marks in direct speech worksheets pdfs are ideal for grade 4 and grade 5 kids.

Teaching Ideas

Speech Marks

There are a number of resources which can be used to teach children about speech marks (also known as inverted commas or quotation marks):

1)  Witch and Tiger Conversation . This worksheet (in PDF format below) shows ten pictures of a witch and a tiger having a conversation. The speech bubbles are blank, and the procedure for using this worksheet goes as follows:

  • First, the children can choose names for the witch and the tiger.
  • Then, they have to create the contents of the conversation. The topic of the conversation could be decided by the children, or it could be based on a choice by the teacher. You could even complete the conversation before the lesson, in order to save more time for the next (and most important) section.
  • Now the children have to re-write this conversation in the form of a story. They will need to include phrases such as “said Tom” and “asked Joe”. Speech marks will also need to be used, so it is important that children have a good knowledge of the correct use of speech marks before this activity is tried.

2)  Missing Speech Marks . This activity is also based on a worksheet, which can be also be found below. It contains a number of sentences involving speech. However, the speech marks have been removed from the text and should be replaced by the children.

3)  Missing Speech Marks . This activity is very similar to the one above, with children required to put speech marks in the correct place in each of the sentences. The worksheet (in PDF format) is also below.

4 Punctuation Marks for Class 4 Examples

Discover the art of punctuation marks for Class 4 with our guide! Learn the usage of essential marks like commas, periods, exclamation marks, and question marks through illustrative examples, enriching your writing skills.

Capital Letters

We use capital letters at the beginning of sentences.

We begin with the names of people, places, rivers, mountains, the days of the week and the months of the year with a capital letter.

Names of books, newspapers, magazines, languages, festivals and holidays also begin with a capital letter.

The end mark of a sentence is generally marked with

  • Full Stop (.)
  • Exclamation Mark (!)
  • Question Mark (?)

1. We use a full stop (.) at the end of a sentence.

2. We use an exclamation mark (!) at the end of words or sentences to show surprise, joy, sadness, wonder, fear, anger, etc.

3. We use a question mark (?) at the end of a question.

Commas (,)

We use commas (,) to separate items in a list. If the last two items in the list are joined by the word ‘and’, then we do not add a comma between those items.

Apostrophe (‘)

1. We use an apostrophe (‘) to show possession. We add an apostrophe with an s to a singular noun to show that something belongs to somebody.

  • Varsha ‘s books
  • Charles ‘s hat
  • my sister ‘s bicycle

2. If a plural noun ends with s, we only add an apostrophe in the end to show possession. We do not add an s after the apostrophe. But if the plural noun does not end in s, then we add an s after the apostrophe.

  • the boy s’ shoes = the shoes belonging to the boys
  • the girl s’ jackets = the jackets belonging to the girls
  • the women ‘s hats = the hats belonging to the women
  • the children ‘s games = the games of the children

3. We also use an apostrophe to show the missing letters in a word.

  • This isn ‘t a good film. = This is n o t a good film.
  • I’ m quite hungry. = I a m quite hungry.
  • He ‘s watering the plants. = He i s watering the plants.
