The tradition of academic regalia and its use in American graduation ceremonies dates back well more than a century. It is a University policy that students wishing to participate in the morning ceremonies in the Yard must wear regalia, and it is a policy we have extended to the HGSE exercises. In addition, all students must wear the regalia appropriate for their degree program and that adheres to university guidelines as illustrated below. If your religious beliefs or traditional customs prohibit you from wearing academic regalia, please contact the Office of Student Affairs .

Q: I missed the deadline to order regalia. Is there any way I can still place an order?

A: All regalia inquiries should be directed to the Harvard COOP. Remember, if you are a PhD candidate, you are not required to pre-order rental regalia. You will pick up your rental gown on the week of Commencement from the Harvard COOP. Visit the Academic Regalia section for more details.

Eligibility

Q: I am receiving a master's en route to my PhD (also referred to as continuing master's or master's in passing). Can I participate in Commencement?

A: As a continuing master’s candidate, you are welcome to attend the Dean's Reception, Commencement Morning Exercises, and Champagne Reception and Luncheon. You are not eligible to participate in the Harvard Griffin GSAS Diploma Awarding Ceremonies in Sanders Theatre, which is reserved for terminal masters and PhD candidates only.

Q: I am slated to graduate in November 2025 (or any future date after May 2025), but I will not be around to attend that year's Commencement. Can I walk this May instead?

A: If you do not receive your degree in the November 2024, March 2025, or May 2025 degree periods, you are not eligible to participate in this year's Commencement and are considered an exception. There is a special process required for your request, and participation is not guaranteed. Please contact the Office of Student Success for details.

Q: I am an AB/SM or AB/AM candidate. How do I participate in Commencement?

You will participate with Harvard College and your undergraduate house in receipt of the AB degree, which is conferred last during the Commencement Morning Exercises. AB/AM and AB/SM candidates are not eligible to attend Harvard Griffin GSAS Commencement activities or receive guest tickets through Harvard Griffin GSAS.

Tickets and Guests

Q: Are Commencement tickets free?

A: All Commencement tickets are free except for the guest tickets for the Harvard Griffin GSAS Champagne Reception and Luncheon. Those tickets are available at $20 each guest and can be purchased during registration. An additional limited supply will be available for purchase at the ticket table and the Harvard Griffin GSAS information tent at Maxwell Dworkin on Commencement Day.

Q: Does my child need a ticket? Can my child/children attend the Harvard Griffin GSAS Diploma Awarding Ceremony? Do they need a ticket? Can my child/children cross the stage with me?

A: Any guest attending the Harvard Griffin GSAS Diploma Awarding Ceremonies in Sanders will need a ticket, including infants sitting on laps. This is a restriction set by the Sanders Theatre venue and there are no exceptions. We can only offer two (2) guest tickets to each participant graduate for this ceremony. Additionally, graduates and guests are seated in separate sections within Sanders Theatre, and we are not able to coordinate children crossing the stage with you.

For the University-wide Commencement Morning Exercises, children 2 years old or under who do not need a seat are not required to have a ticket.

Q: I was hoping to bring different guests to events throughout the day. Do I have to bring the same guests to all events?

A: No! You can bring different guests to different events. If you want to celebrate your graduation with more than two guests, this can be a nice way to allow all your loved ones to experience some portion of the day. Ultimately, how you distribute the guest tickets you ordered is at your discretion.

Q: Is there a waitlist for extra guest tickets?

A: Due to the increasing number of participating graduates and venue capacity restrictions, we are not able to accommodate requests for extra tickets or maintain a waitlist. Guests without tickets are welcome to livestream events in Maxwell Dworkin located at 33 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. Seating is available in this location on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: My friend is also graduating this year, but they won't be attending Commencement. Can I have their guest tickets?

A: Tickets are not automatically guaranteed and handed out to every graduating student. To receive tickets, you must register for Commencement and pick up your tickets in person. Our staff will not permit you to send a proxy to pick up your tickets or facilitate the "transferring" of tickets between you and someone else.

Q: I have registered for Commencement, but I will be out of town until the night before graduation. Can I have them mailed to me or pick them up outside of the scheduled ticket table window?

A: Tickets cannot be mailed, no exceptions. You can pick up your tickets from the Harvard Griffin GSAS information tent in front of Maxwell Dworkin (33 Oxford Street) as early as 6:00 a.m. on Commencement Day.

Q: I purchased guest luncheon tickets during registration but it turns out I don't need all of them. Can I cancel some and get a refund?

A: Yes! If you need to cancel one or more guest luncheon tickets, you can do so at any point before you pick up your tickets, or at the ticket table, and we will issue a refund to the payment method you provided at registration. Contact [email protected] with your request.

Q: I did not purchase any/enough guest luncheon tickets during registration. Can I get more tickets?

A: Yes! You can purchase more luncheon tickets by contacting [email protected] to have more tickets added to your registration. A limited supply of tickets will also be available for purchase at the ticket table and on Commencement Day at the Harvard Griffin GSAS information tent at Maxwell Dworkin (33 Oxford St). Cash preferred.

Q: I am not going to be able to make it to Commencement. How will I get my diploma?

A: You can arrange to pick up your diploma at the Registrar’s Office .

Product Description

  QUALITY TAKES TIME AND EXPERTISE.

WHEN SPECIFYING A NEED BY DATE, PLEASE ALLOW 6 WEEKS TO SHIP ANY CUSTOM ITEM, INCLUDING HOODS AND DELUXE ACADEMIC REGALIA GOWNS.

Harvard University AUTHENTIC DOCTORAL REGALIA Approved by the Commencement Office of Harvard University The authentic Harvard crimson fabric is one of the most prominent features of the Harvard University doctoral outfit. Traditional style pleats, double-bell sleeves, a deluxe button and cord on the back with zipper front closure give this hand-crafted and custom-tailored outfit a distinctive appearance. Rich black velvet doctoral panels and bars are clearly visible against the crimson fabric of the gown. Degree colored embroidered "crows feet" on the velvet panels at chest level indicate the discipline of the earned degree. The proper cap to be worn with the authentic Harvard University doctoral outfit is a 4 corner black mortarboard with a black silk tassel, or 4 corner black velvet tam with a black tassel. Your outfit would not be complete without the doctoral hood. The Harvard University doctoral hood is distinct in design in that it is not trimmed in degree color velvet. The black shell is lined with fabric in the same crimson color and fabric as the gown. In conjunction with the Office of the University Marshal, University Cap & Gown was instrumental in the redevelopment of the authentic crimson color to the Harvard University doctoral gown.

Something New, Something Old

Updates for the engineers and the honorands: harvard regalia sightings, for connoisseurs.

harvard phd graduation gown

The honorands’ doctoral robes, with the crow’s feet restored Photograph by Jim Harrison

Harvard, nearing its four-hundredth anniversary, is encrusted with traditions—never more so than during its Commencement rituals. The entry for “Academic regalia of Harvard University” in the undergraduates’ new best friend (Wikipedia) begins with this wisdom (including a charming Britishism):

As the oldest college in the United States, Harvard University has a long tradition of academic dress. Harvard gown facings bear crow’s-feet emblems near the yoke, a symbol unique to Harvard, made from flat braid in colours distinctive of the wearer's qualification or degree. Crow’s-feet are double for earned degrees, and triple for honorary degrees.

A word to those undergraduate paper-writers: the passage, we are proud to note, properly cites Cynthia Rossano’s 1999 article for this magazine, “Reading the Regalia: A guide to deciphering the academic dress code .” She observed there that the origin of the unique crow’s-foot device

is described in a letter written by [Samuel Eliot] Morison in 1936. Professor Eugene Wambaugh, as a member of [President Charles William] Eliot’s committee on academic dress, had been asked to see that the proposed gowns be given some distinctive Harvard feature. Morison writes: “The committee decided that all Harvard hoods should be lined with crimson; and Dr. Wambaugh, who had been reading up Harvard history, had heard of crow’s-feet adopted for undergraduates’ dress in 1822.” “One Cambridge gentleman,” continues Morison, “produced a jacket worn by his grandfather, and an old grad sketched the crow’s-feet from memory. Both agreed, and double crow’s-feet in different colors, to represent the different faculties, were recommended in the committee report for the lapels of Harvard gowns. The report was at first ‘laid on the table’ by the Corporation, President Eliot being much against caps and gowns, but was finally adopted in 1902.” Of the various colors chosen to mark the different degrees, some derive from the Middle Ages and have easily remembered historic connotations. White for the bachelors of arts and sciences comes from the white of the Oxford and Cambridge B.A. hoods; dark blue for the doctor of philosophy is the color of truth and wisdom; medium gray has long represented business; lilac, dental medicine; and yellow, design. The scarlet for divinity follows the traditional color of the Christian church and crucifixion; light blue for education is again the color of truth and wisdom, as is the peacock blue for government. Purple for law is reminiscent of bygone kings who made the laws; salmon pink signifies public health; and the green for medicine is the green of medicinal herbs.

On careful review, the passage of time, and Harvard's evolution, have rendered Rossano’s catalog of “rainbow-hued crow’s-feet” slightly incomplete, and lacking in an essential detail. Both, in the detail-oriented hands of Stephan Magro, the new Commencement director , have been remedied for this 366th edition of Harvard’s graduation exercise.

The New Kids on the Block

harvard phd graduation gown

Effective September 20, 2007, at the outset of Drew Faust’s presidency, the division of engineering and applied sciences was elevated to a school of engineering and applied sciences (SEAS), within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Now, approaching its tenth anniversary, this newest, cuttingest-edge Harvard school is being dipped in tradition: SEAS is getting its own , distinctive crow’s-foot color. On Thursday, candidates for master’s degrees will proudly sport what Magro describes as an “orange/gold” device: the orange nods to the customary color for engineering, the gold for science, as he explains the logic.

The bureaucratic reasoning is impeccable: dental medicine (celebrating its sesquicentennial) gets its own color (lilac), even though it formally nests within the Medical School (the aforesaid green).

There is, inevitably, one further complication: joint bachelor’s/master’s students will still wear  white crow’s feet, because a student must technically be awarded the bachelor’s degree before a master’s. Or so Harvard tradition dictates.

Honor(ands) Served

From deep  in Harvard’s past, the official language decrees that “Holders of honorary degrees…are entitled to wear a triple crow’s foot of the color appropriate to the faculty represented by the degree.”

But for reasons now lost to memory, the tradition has been breached, apparently since the early 1980s—a distressingly casual era when honorands wore no regalia (Julia Child) or their suitable costume (General Colin Powell, in uniform), or their own academic gowns. Magro also suggests that Cotrell & Leonard, established in 1832 and considered the “originator of the cap and gown industry in America ,” underwent business difficulties that resulted in a change in Harvard’s source of supply.

Whatever the reason, Harvard continued to confer honorary degrees but, by its own standards, inadvertently short-changed the recipients, whose gowns have for the past three decades or so been issued sans crow’s feet. Now, proper order has been restored, just in time to recognize Mark Zuckerberg (who ironically did not wait around to collect his College degree with its white design) and his fellow honorands in 2017.

A Final Note

For obsessives who wish to delve much deeper (the text runs 18 dense pages, with 113 footnotes and a two-page bibliography), Nicholas A. Hoffman’s “Crow’s Feet and Crimson: Academic Dress at Harvard,” from Transactions of the Burgon Society , is available online—just like Wikipedia.

The Commencement Morning Exercises (9:30 AM)

harvard phd graduation gown

The Morning Exercises, the official University Commencement ceremony, are held in the outdoor Tercentenary Theatre before an audience of 32,000 degree candidates from the College and Graduate and Professional Schools, family members, faculty, alumni/ae, and special guests of the University. Some families and guests may prefer to avoid the large crowds and view the ceremony on television monitors located at most of the undergraduate Houses and Graduate and Professional Schools. During the Morning Exercises, the three Commencement student speakers, representing each of the following categories (Undergraduate English, Undergraduate Latin, and Graduate English) deliver their speeches. The Deans of each school introduce their respective degree candidates for their specific degrees, which the president then confers. Towards the conclusion of the ceremony the graduating Seniors are asked to rise, and their degrees are conferred on them as a group by the president. Honorary Degrees are then conferred. Academic regalia (cap and gown) is required for all graduating degree candidates. Admission to the Morning Exercises is by ticket only. The sale of Commencement tickets is prohibited.

Diploma-Awarding Ceremonies at the Graduate and Professional Schools (Noon)

At the conclusion of the Morning Exercises, the President’s Division will process from the platform and down the center aisle of Tercentenary Theatre. Degree candidates and their guests return to their respective Schools for luncheons and individual diploma-awarding ceremonies.  For additional information please contact the respective Graduate/Professional school.

Regalia Accessories

The only regalia accessories endorsed for Harvard University’s Commencement Exercises, including the HES Commencement Ceremony, are University-provided regalia accessories (such as a stole, pin, tassel, cord, etc.). Neither University-wide regalia accessories, nor Harvard Extension School regalia accessories can be created by students or student-run organizations without planning and approval by Harvard University’s student affairs, commencement, and OEDIB offices. Those who attempt to sell unapproved academic regalia — including stoles, pins, tassels, cords, etc. — may face exclusion from Harvard commencement events.

Please note Harvard Extension School is currently unable to approve student and student-run organizations’ customized/personalized regalia accessory requests. We appreciate your understanding.

Please be advised that graduates who wear regalia accessories not provided by the University must remove these before participating in all Harvard Commencement events.

Class of '21 - Cap & Gown - Is there any point in buying one?

Everyone keeps asking me when I'm getting my cap and gown, as I graduate this semester. But because Harvard's only doing an online event...is there really any reason for me to go get one?

The idea of getting one depresses me a little. It just reminds me that the commencement day I've dreamed of will never happen and that I won't get to wear it anywhere, ever.

I don't know. Feels like a pointless purchase.

Are you getting a cap and gown? Why or why not?

Customer Reviews

PHinisheD Gown makes a FANTASTIC product. They also contacted me directly to make sure I was getting the best deal in a timely fashion.

Good quality robe and fits nicely. Gets the job done…

Thank you for the custom doctoral hood. The colors matched my university's very well and, more importantly, it is a very high quality hood and it reminds me how this regalia was actually standard dress for faculty once upon a time. I purchased my gown, hood, and tam from Phinished and can imagine how these garments could be daily garb. Thank you for the care you put in to tailoring this regalia and appreciating the work we put in to Phinishing these degrees.

I ordered a gown for the University of Notre Dame - since someone had done this previously, they already had the school emblems that go on the front panels. (If you're also at ND, you'll want to order the gown with embroidery, and 8-sided tam. I believe colors are royal blue and gold). I can't verify that the gown is identical to the official one because I live elsewhere and am not attending commencement, but it looks and feels great. Way better deal than going through the university. They can be a bit slow over email, but once they respond, customer service is excellent.

These are excellent. The robe has buttons exactly where it is convenient for making everything hang properly. Love the pockets. Very fairly priced in comparison to other comparable robes (similar fabrics etc) and of comparable, if not better, quality. Regalia is a big, complicated, bulky garment - these hang nicely, the fabric feels nice, and they have nice finishing touches. Everything arrived well before graduation

Team was very communicative throughout the process and the final product looks terrific! Love that there are pockets :)

I had ordered the doctoral regalia so that I could participate in proper attire at the graduation ceremonies at my current institution. I am very happy with the PhinishedD gown. More importantly, the team rushed the delivery when things were running late so that I could get the regalia in time for the commencement ceremony in May. Thank you!

Thank you to the PhinisheD Gown team! My order arrived early and I love it! It was quite the journey getting finished with my doctorate- I appreciate this team for being one the final (and most important) steps!

Amazing job.

I was hesitant to get the custom regalia from a company other than the one contracted with the University. The new regalia is an unusual color and I specified the color on the order. It is a "olivey" shade of hunter green. Instead of contacting me when they didn't have the color, they made it in Emerald Green, which is definitely not right. Hunter green would have been close enough, but not emerald green. I had sent them pictures of the regalia as well, which was clearly not emerald. I tried to give them as much instruction as possible and they had my contact info if they had any questions. The quality of the regalia is beautiful, but I'm going to feel a bit embarrassed wearing it to commencement. At least I am faculty and won't be sitting next to numerous other people in the correct color.

I ordered a custom cap and gown set, and the finished product is beautifully crafted. They communicated well throughout the process, and shipping was fast. The order was delivered a few days early!

I am so pleased with my regalia — the materials and craft are beautiful and thoughtful. Beyond that, I specifically appreciate that it correctly fits my narrow shoulders without making it look like I’m a child playing dress-up (in the world of doctoral regalia this is a rarer quality than I previously knew, at least if you’re a petite woman!). I recommend PhinisheD highly. Thank you so much!

It was a great experience! Thank you so much!

The regalia offered by Phinished Gown is beyond compare. For a fraction of the price offered by other robe makers, they were able to deliver on their promise of high quality regalia. Mine was Custom made because of specific requests and Nol accomodated all, patiently. Will definitely recommend to colleagues and friends…

I ordered the custom regalia set for the University of North Carolina. It shipped just over a month after I ordered it. It is well-constructed, and all the details--down to the cording, braids, and embroidery--are spot on. And all for less than half the cost of the standard vendor!

PhinisheD Gown reached out several times after I ordered to confirm details, including sending sample pictures. The gown arrived last week and it is fantastic. Fits well, colors and quality are great, and I am so glad to finally have pockets in my regalia. Thanks - great company!

Great service and excellent quality! Very reasonably priced and comes with a garment bag that is very useful for storage. Quite happy with the product and service!

I received my regalia today and it's beautiful! They took care of every detail that I asked for and the price was much lower than I saw on other websites. Time from order to receipt was 8 weeks. Just plan ahead (order early) and you'll be pleased with the product.

Great service and excellent quality. And about 40% less from the competition price. I cannot wait to wear it at my next graduation ceremony!

I’m bigger than the average bear so I needed something custom. They came through in spades. They even accommodated a last minute update to the hood colors and still shipped on time. Great team!

PhinisheD Gown worked well with me in figuring out my size, colors, and getting the beautiful cap and gown to me in an expeditious manner. Thanks!

PhinisheD Gown did a really great job in making the gown for my PhD graduation. Everything was professionally done in a timely manner at a great low price 👍👍👍

Received my regalia order yesterday- I had high hopes, and they were exceeded! Beautiful, classy- and the beret is amazing, too! Can’t wait to wear this at my next faculty event. Thank you, PhinisheD Gown!

I ordered a custom open design gown for my regalia for UC. The quality is beyond amazing and the gown fits perfect based of the measurements. The cap and hood are also gorgeous material and quality. I can’t wait to wear it at graduation and I’m the future!

User picture

For my hooding, I rented the official regalia, but as a new faculty member I needed my own to wear a few times a year. I’m so glad I went with PhinisheD! The regalia arrived today, and I couldn’t be more pleased. The quality is better than the official regalia—the fabric is lighter and nicer to wear, the tam is overall just nicer with an attractive tassel and an option to adjust the size, and that’s not even to mention the pockets, which are wonderful. The gown even has the embroidered badges for my university—which I wasn’t expecting from an unofficial source. I don’t know if they’re able to do it for all institutions, but it was a lovely surprise! I’m so grateful to be able to spend a bit less and get a better gown—it would be worth it at a higher price. I’ll definitely be recommending to others!

Good quality, delivered on time

When I graduated with my PhD, my university didn’t give us the option of purchasing our regalia. I bought my regalia from PhinisheD Gown after earning a faculty position to wear to convocation and graduation ceremonies. Wearing this tam, gown, and hood feels 10x better than any other regalia I’ve worn! Oh, AND THE POCKETS ARE EVERYTHING!!! <3

Everything is top notch and very well made. Highly recommend.

Due to COVID, I didn’t get the chance to walk for my doctoral graduation. This was a gift from my parents and the custom PSU doctoral gown came out perfect! Every detail was immaculate and the fabric and embroidery was high quality. Highly recommend!

Admittedly, the ease in ordering online--and putting my other requests in a list on the comment box--made me nervous that I just donating a lot of money to just a costume. However, the surprisingly small box arrived over a week early, and I pulled out a beautiful (and unwrinkled!) gown, hood, and tam. The gown was protected in a bag and with a hanger. It wears very well--and it looks better than I thought it would. Each year, I've paid about 20% of the cost for renting regalia--I should have bought this years ago! I love love love that there are pockets!

The gown is excellent. There were facial masks in the pockets, which came as a pleasant surprise in this difficult time. Very happy.

When I received my doctoral regalia from my school I was seriously disappointed. Cheaply made and I felt after my years of hard work getting my PhD I deserved to wear something that looked as good as I felt. So, I searched the web and found Phinished Gown and read their reviews...all good, so I chose to have them make mine. They did not disappoint! Jane was attentive and made sure that I got exactly what I ordered. When I opened up the package I almost cried...well, I did when I put it on. The materials used are so beautiful and it just looks and feels so good. I can't say enough about it. So happy I chose to order from them.

Good as expected

After learning about Phinished Gown through Reddit, I emailed Jane with a tall order: could it be possible to create a gown that fits both me at 5'4" and my husband at 6'0" since we both earned our PhDs from the same institution? She guided us by providing precise measurements for each of the Phinished Gown sizes, so we ordered one and hoped for the best. They were very receptive to feedback I had when we received the proof, and they were quick to correct a miscommunication we had about the ordering process. As for the gown, it magically looks great on both of us! Regarding the match to our university's official regalia at my graduation ceremony, there were some differences in the fabric type and color of the gown, the style of the piping, and the tam's tassel. However, I much preferred the overall look and fit of our Phinished Gown set, and the differences will be negligible when my husband uses as a faculty member at a different college. The pockets are a HUGE plus, too.

Overall, I would highly recommend Phinished Gown for your regalia needs. The product is high quality and the service is exceptional. I received many compliments, and for a savings of a few hundred dollars, I did not feel like we had received a bargain product at all. Thank you so much for making my Penn State regalia dreams come true!!

I decided to purchase my regalia this year, as the rental regalia provided at my current institution for faculty/staff participating in commencement is of the generic black type, and I very much wanted to wear my alma mater's colors - but the price of the "official" regalia was far too high! I was similarly hesitant to purchase "unofficial" regalia, since it can be hard to tell how good it would come out. Phinished Gown was recommended to me by one of my old classmates, who purchased a set for her new faculty job, and said it was outstanding. So I decided to go for it, and I couldn't be happier that I did. Jane took great care at making sure to have enough photos to be able to color match the custom set with our official regalia, and it came out very close - a bit lighter in color, but I actually much prefer it. The gown is perfectly tailored and is a nice fabric texture, and as others have written, it has pockets, a great feature. I received many compliments from other marshals at our commencement ceremony this year! Thanks for the amazing regalia, which I look forward to wearing for many years!

I was a bit hesitant to custom order the PhD set for the University of Washington. I was concerned the quality would not be as good or that there would be slight differences. I was wrong. I received a high quality, beautiful set that is identical to what I rented when I graduated a few years ago. The packaging was professional (they include a nice cover to keep the set protected and clean). I am very impressed especially because the price cannot be beat. Some places ask for ridiculous amounts. Not here. They are fair and deliver a high quality product. I highly recommend them and will share my experience with my colleagues. Almost forgot: they met the deadline and I received the set one week prior to attending my students’ graduation. Thank you!

PhinisheD Gown did not disappoint! My doctoral regalia was perfect and arrived before the expected delivery date. Even with a last minute order, the customer service was quick and efficient and the quality of my regalia was top-notch (at half the price!).

Through initial shock in the total costs of custom regalia from by University ($1,100), I was informed by a colleague/recent graduate that she used Phinished Gown the previous year and was 100% pleased. Reluctantly, I filled out the custom gown form, Jane and Nok did NOT disappoint! They ensured that the proof fo the gown was exactly what I wanted and matched my University's regalia for nearly half the price. Though the color is a bit lighter, the material is clearly high quality and the tam and hoods are quite beautiful! And most importantly...it has pockets!! I highly recommend Phinished Gown to anyone who wants to save money, but not on quality for their doctoral gown!

Fantastic! Great quality, thank you for stellar work.

Thank you. You are the best

Excellent customer attention

I had ordered a custom-sized PhD set and the folks at PhinisheD Gown reached out and confirmed I was fine with a standard sized product, saving me hundreds. That's great service. And Gown/Regalia look great. Thanks!

The gown looked great at graduation events this week! Thank you so much for doing an excellent job with it! It is extremely professionally made, and accurate to the school's regalia. Attached is a picture. Thanks again!
