My Role Model Essay: A Few Ways to Elaborate on The Subject

EssayEdge > Blog > My Role Model Essay: A Few Ways to Elaborate on The Subject

You might be surprised at how much your answer to this question can say about you. The role model you choose for your role model essay is not nearly as important as your description of that person and the way you relate this back to yourself. Here are some principles to keep in mind when writing this essay.

  • Choose someone with whom you have had a meaningful relationship. Who is your role model? Don’t pick a more important but distant figure. No one will be impressed if you choose, for example, the CEO of your company but have nothing to say about him beyond listing the credentials in his company profile. Note: There are some questions that allow you to identify a “hero,” and others that ask you to describe an ideal manager. In those cases you should alter your choice accordingly, but the below principles still apply.
  • Express thoughtful admiration.  Glorifying your role model makes you sound naíve. Focus instead on describing the person in an insightful manner and explaining why you value what he or she represents. You might even have reason to differentiate yourself from your role model in specific ways, though the overall purpose should be to describe what you admire and want to emulate.
  • Describe and illustrate specific qualities.  My role model essays should be accurate. Avoid relying on vague language that merely depicts your role model as “brilliant” or “compassionate.” Instead, aim for a more penetrating portrait that captures your role model’s complexities. Moreover, just because you’re not writing about yourself does not mean that you don’t have to back up your claims. Show your role model in detailed action to convey the qualities that he or she embodies.

Brian P.

  • Tell stories.  Using specific anecdotes is the best way to achieve depth in your description. By describing the details of a particular episode, you can convey much more about a person than by listing any number of characteristics.
  • Show the role model’s tangible influence on you.  The best way to demonstrate the importance your role model has played in your life is to recount changes you’ve made based on that person’s influence. Of course, you should not come across as a sycophant or a blind follower. But you can show how your role model provoked ideas that then initiated a course of action.

How Role Models Influence Behaviors Essay

Introduction, addictive behavior, psychology of addictive behavior, aims of socialisation, process of socialisation.

A role is a behavior or attention to duty expected of an individual to which he or she may adhere to another. A role model is a character implementing a certain role in society for others to copy. This is to say a role model is used as an example by other actors in the society. They can be teachers in various institutions whose characters are admired by students acting as role models to their children or even vice versa.

Role models are perceived differently in each society and even each individual or age group, one’s role model may not be another’s or one society’s role model may differ from another. A certain age group for instance teenagers may look at a popular reggae musician as their role model, a case which may not apply to adults who may treasure gospel music. If you can go ahead to ask these teenagers why they treasure reggae, they would give a reason that reggae music has lots of teachings like culture, lifestyle a reason which may not satisfy adults who are hitched to gospel music.

Everyone in society is a role model in his or her own capacity and others are seen as role models by others in society yet they are not aware, though others could be aware. There are two types of role models, positive ethical role models, and negative role models. Parents, religious leaders, political leaders can either be positive or negative role models depending on their behaviors too which can be disastrous or developmental to other actors in the society be it, children or fellow adults.

So the critical issue here is to really see if these role models influence behavior and how. As I have shown in the previous role models influence, both children and adults, and also these role models can be both old people and young people.

These models also vary in that we have religious leaders, social leaders, professional models, personal friends, relatives. A good driving example is Kofi Annan who is considered a professional model because of his tireless efforts to resolve the Kenyan post-election crisis which he succeeded in restoring peace back to Kenya. He is a role model not only to the Kenyan people but also to many other countries which had the same problems but he managed to resolve the crisis. Being retired from a UN secretary post, he only offers services in conflict resolution.

Role models are influential in shaping people’s characters-making these people internalize the ethical behavior they learn, imitate, or copy from their role models. Research on role models and socialization of human beings indicate that role models have great impacts on shaping ethical behavior we see in the world today, for example, parents can shape their children’s behaviors in that the child will exactly copy what he or she sees the father or mother doing making such behavior become part and parcel of the child. Thus role models highly influence and convey ethical standards to young people whether they are wrong or right.

For elementary students, parents also act as their role models. They tend to take their characteristics which later are changed by their attitudes and shaped differently depending on their new friends and associates. For instance, their interaction with their workmates, classmates, and managers will tend to change their ethical behavior and characteristics. It will take an elementary child great tactics to learn from their parents or their surroundings.

For example, if a parent’s way is to make false promises, ever fighting mum when some things go wrong, idle and disorder, then the child is also likely to take ever such characteristics. This makes me believe that however much role model is seen as a positive word, other role models are completely on the negative side and to some extremes are seen as misfits in the society because they just cause trouble instead of living in harmony and bringing positive interactions amongst societal members.

There are many factors affecting the development of behavior of individuals all these sources state that behavior is influenced through imitations which can become permanent. Again Bandura, 1997, children who watch violent movies or for that matter action movies tend to behave in more aggressive ways towards their peers because what they watch remains in their minds, and always want to practice that. This basically shows that if a role model has antisocial or pro-social behaviors, children will definitely copy those behaviors and their social ethics changed in that direction. It is not only children who imitate the behaviors of people they consider to be their role models but even the adults do. These behaviors sometimes become part of individuals hence making them not able to live without them.

Addictive behavior is a behavior that has become part and parcel of one’s character and he or she feels incomplete before actually fulfilling. Just like role models, addictive behavior can either be positive or negative. Addictive behavior comes from within and in most cases, it may not be the same that is being copied or imitated presently but something that was copied in the past could be from a role model and is now just being implemented by another character. Positive addiction can include habitual prayers before sleeping or eating, simple words like thank you, am sorry, please. Negative addiction can include chain-smoking, sexual maniacs, fighting, gossiping.

In the current study, teens with favorable outcome expectations that were balanced by high parental expectations for their behavior were mostly less likely to start drinking than teens with favorable drinking expectations for their behavior. Hence parents should build up their expectations during early adolescents just when teens begin forming their expectations about drinking and still holding their parents as very important to them. While most parents expect their early adolescents not to drink, young people’s perceptions of their parent’s expectations about their behavior may vary depending on the amounts and quality of time parents spend with their children and also the quality and nature of their communication about their expectations on their children’s behavior.

Psychology basically deals with the minds and emotions of individuals. Thus psychology of addictive behaviors is concerned with mental addiction. They are behaviors basically brought about in the mind that is one does what he or she is thinking or has been thinking. Just like the previous two discussed issues, psychology addictive behavior has its extremes of positive and negative aspects which definitely mislead or build up someone. Positive behavior can for instance be courtesy, submission, love while negative behavior can be like pride that is thinking one is better than the rest, hatred bringing negative attitudes towards others. All these behaviors come from within, that is in the mind.

Now the role models here are supposed to act as a big example to the rest. Just like as indicated before, these role models can be parents, politicians, church leaders. Let’s take an example of a church leader as a role model, he or she can help in controlling the psychological addictive behavior of the young and the old in the society more so the positive psychological addictive behaviors. When for instance he or she is going to officiate a church weeding between two lovebirds, he or she will try to bring them to an understanding of why it is important for a wife to submit to a husband and the husband to love his wife by reading to them such scriptures in the bible. He will tell them the advantage and disadvantages of doing so and not doing so.

When counseling these two people they will tend to psychologically adhere to this, thus making them get used to such lifestyle (behavior addiction) so as mainly not to face marriage wrath. On the other hand psychology of addictive behavior can be negative. A good example is that most children look at their parents as role models and if these same parents go astray somewhere they tend to mislead their children. A child who has been brought up in a family where violence is a daily routine cannot be calm in the mind. This child grows up knowing that the only way to solve a problem is not by sitting down and reasoning or having a dialogue but by violence.

This behavior then becomes part and parcel of this child which in further extremes can cause him or her mental depression especially in cases where the child cannot succeed even though he or she uses his or her might. When it reaches such a case, of lets say mental depression, role models like counselors are seen as very important to society, and without them, something is seen to be lacking in society.

The question of whether one is worth living is uprightly important. Human beings act as role models to each other as already mentioned before and have some attachments to the community he lives in. it is said in a proverb that “you may never realize that you have something good until when you lose it” it’s the same here that the importance of human being who are perceived as misfits in the society may not be realized until when they for instance leave or die.

So life is important and everyone is worth living because each person is complex in his or her own ways and thus each person contributes to the society differently and in a special way which can transform lives to the better side which is already seen as role models to others. As long as they are not feeling sick, hungry, and uncomfortable, they will always fill the adult’s atmosphere with humor. This shows that however much someone is seen to be young, but has life; he or she can influence others in a way. Who does not like happiness or humor? Hence these people are seen as role models who inflict happiness in other people’s lives.

So life is an important factor influencing both the role models and those imitating the role models. Remember the dead have got no influence on others, they are just there. Yet life is a conditional function of creatures that influence others.

This then brings up the issue of socialization. Only and only living things socialize. This still shows the importance of life as shown previously. So we must first get to understand the meaning of socialization. In a layman’s understanding, socialization is to take part in social; activities or to take control or adapt to the needs of the society. No society is fully satisfied with what it has because human beings’ needs are insatiable and they keep recurring be it social needs, psychological nits. Economical needs and many others. In this case we are basically going to talk, about the aims of socialization in influencing people’s behavior, more so through role models.

As we have seen before, everyone is a role model in the society thus socialization is entitled to everyone. Without this socialization, most fields in role modeling would not succeed. For example, parents, church leaders, counselors, teachers, peers, husbands and wives need to socialize so, as to succeed as role models. Lets see it in a living example, Let’sough socialization African counselor has succeeded in pulling out street children from the streets taking them to children’s homes or even introducing them to blue-collar jobs like carpentry, masonry which has helped in changing their status in life.

Through socialization, parents have talked telling them the importance of education which has made most children succeed in their lives and eventually have lived comfortably. Church leaders as role models have socialized with their church members through preaching and telling them the importance of sex in marriage and not premarital sexual behaviors. This has helped society in reducing the rate of AIDS scourge, especially among young people thus restoring and maintaining many lives which life is also an important aspect in society for role modeling.

Husbands and wives have also acted as role models to each other in that wives have really shown submission to their husbands thus making them love their wives and hence maintaining marriages and priming a society that is not promiscuous. Even peers have also acted as role models through socialization in schools by encouraging weak colleagues who feel they were not blessed with brains like others. This they do in group discussion thus helping the weak to excel.

Socialization can either be positive or negative, the examples shown above or negative socialization. Negative socialization mostly misleads for example a father who takes his child to a tavern or a pub when taking alcohol with his friends and where obscene words are used is exposing the child to negative socialization because this child can end up becoming an alcoholic, immoral in talks and maybe in deeds. Therefore we realize that socialization is also important when it comes to role modeling.

Socialization bridges the gap between the two extremes of different categories of societal members or even the same categories. This sometimes is seen as difficult without a role model as either initiator or a mediator. Take for example in our day-to-day lives people with high status (the rich) naturally will tend to segregate themselves with those of low status (the poor). The rich will live in posh places while the poor will mainly be found living in slums or average areas.

These two groups will rarely interact or socialize because they believe their needs and wants can never be the same. Little do they know that each and every human being is dependent on the other despite their sex, education, economic, social, and even psychological status. For instance, a poor man’s son can marry a rich man’s daughter and they live comfortably, a rich man’s son can assist a poor man’s daughter in a subject she doesn’t understand and help her excel in education thus making her also rich in future. Here is where the role models in the society try to bridge gaps between people enhancing socialization and thus promoting the spirit of acceptance.

To understand society clearly socialization may be there. This will help to attend to any calamity that may befall society. Human beings being interwoven or dependent units in the society need each other as the saying goes ‘no man is an island.

This can only be accomplished through socialization. No one knows everything that is why even various governments have to involve the grassroots members so as to solve grass root problems. This is done through a bottom-up approach. On the contrary also for the government to succeed in its service provision after getting to know grass root problems it has to use a top-down approach. Top-down and bottom-up approaches are two ways of socialization which mostly is enhanced by role models who are sincere.

Through socialization native language and culture are passed with their originality. In this case, the best role models here are our grandparents or for that matter our forefathers. Our grandparents also are seen only being able to pass on the native language and culture through socialization. The old people socialize by telling stories, teaching cultural practices for instance in Africa many grandmothers teach their granddaughters how to take care of a husband, how to cook the native local foods, how to take care of their babies after giving birth while grandfathers are seen to be teaching their grandsons how to take care of their homes, how to hunt and bring food home, how to command respect from their families and how to treat their wives.

The fourth aim of socialization is to maintain societal norms, virtues, and beliefs. The church leaders, government arms are good examples here because they act as role models to maintain these. Church leader’s role models will inflict virtues like telling people the importance of living in harmony with for instance stealing, killing, smoking, irresponsible sexual behaviors. These they only do through socialization which eventually can transform some societal members. So as we have seen in all these points above, socialization aims at transforming society for the better and the main transformers are the role models who only interact or socialize with others when trying to influence them positively.

Socialization being a social activity must have a process for its smooth running. This process of activities must start from somewhere going step by step in order for instance when two people meet and fall in love and even plan to marry, they will first get to know each other name, age, origin, and even denomination for some people. From that point, they will become normal friends with no ultimate socialization than they later become intimate and start courting and eventually tie the knots thus becoming husband and wife. In their process of socialization, they will have their role models like God the almighty, other friends who may be married, and living comfortably to help them go about this issue correctly.

When babies are born, they totally know no one and nothing. As they grow, they learn things around them, who their parents are, when they are hungry, when they have been left alone. Some qualities may vary from child to child depending on their role models who are mainly their parents. Within the environment in which the child is born, he or she learns the language, customs, attitudes, and various things in which things are done in his or her society. Therefore different environments will play different vital parts in molding the potentiality and effect they learn to behave.

I have seen everyone as a role model in society in his or her own ways. Role models have also been portrayed as either positive influencers or negative influencers. Role models have also been seen as having vast professions or status in society. Like teachers, church leaders, government leaders, grandparents, peers, parents, husbands and wives, sisters, brothers, the rich, and the poor.

Role models have been seen as actors who shape people’s characters where others become addictive behaviors that are either positive or negative. Role models are also seen to be great actors in psychological addictive behaviors. For instance, counselors, as role models have tried to advise let’s, say street children to move away from the streets a place where these children have gotten used to and are psychologically comfortable there.

Socialization is also an issue that has sheen discussed her stating that its why only through socialization that the role models can be able to convey their influences to others who an example given is grandparents teaching their grandchildren native cultures and language through socialization. Human life as an important aspect in society has also promoted role models influences to other people. Here I have seen that there is no man who is an island.

The socialization process is important because it helps the role models take for instance counselors advise two people wishing to marry on what to expect in marriage and how to handle these issues.

In conclusion, it can be seen that these role models are very influential and in most instances important to society and that’s why society needs them.

500 Words Essay on My Role Model

In the grand tapestry of life, there are few figures as influential and formative as our parents. They are our first teachers, our primary guides, and the mirrors through which we perceive ourselves and the world around us. As a college student, I’ve come to appreciate the profound impact my parents have had on my life, shaping me into the person I am today. They are my role models, their values and principles serving as a compass guiding my journey.

My Parents: Pillars of Strength and Wisdom

My parents, with their unique blend of strength and wisdom, have always been a beacon of inspiration. Their personal and professional journeys, marked by resilience and determination, have taught me that life is not about avoiding storms but learning how to dance in the rain. They have shown me that success is not measured by wealth or status, but by the positive impact we have on others’ lives.

The Value of Education

As staunch advocates for education, my parents instilled in me a love for learning from an early age. They emphasized that education is not merely about acquiring knowledge or skills, but about nurturing curiosity, developing critical thinking, and fostering a lifelong commitment to personal growth. This perspective has shaped my academic journey, encouraging me to pursue knowledge beyond textbooks and classrooms, and to value intellectual curiosity over rote learning.

Lessons in Empathy and Kindness

My parents’ lessons extend beyond the academic realm. They have demonstrated the importance of empathy and kindness, teaching me that compassion is the cornerstone of human connection. Their acts of generosity, both big and small, have shown me that kindness is not merely an act but a way of life. These lessons have shaped my interactions with others, encouraging me to approach every individual with understanding and respect.

Resilience and Perseverance

Life is not always smooth sailing, and it is during these turbulent times that my parents’ resilience shines through. They have taught me that setbacks and failures are not roadblocks but stepping stones towards success. Their perseverance in the face of adversity has inspired me to embrace challenges with courage and determination, and to view each obstacle as an opportunity for growth.

In conclusion, my parents are my role models, their lives a testament to the power of perseverance, the value of education, and the importance of kindness and empathy. They have shaped my worldview, inspired my aspirations, and guided my actions. As I navigate the complexities of college life and beyond, I am grateful for their unwavering support and guidance. In this essay, I will explore why my sister is my role model. Growing up, I admired her and aspired to follow in her footsteps. However, our relationship evolved when we moved to the United States, and I began to see her as not just a role model but also a close friend. Her college essay about family brought us even closer, and I realized that I could chart my own path. Now, as I pursue a career in the medical field, I value the lessons I've learned from her and the bond we share.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Like the average teenager, who seeks the perfect person to look up to, I longed to have someone in my life inspire me so that I may do what pleases myself as well as my loved ones. A role model is a person who someone admires and whose behaviour they try to copy. From all the people I could choose to be my role model, I always thought that my sister would fit best. I used to think that my goals should be set to accomplish past her’s. As the youngest in my immediate family, I spent most of my life with my sister, so it was never a doubt that I shouldn’t be like her.

Over three years ago, my family moved to the United States. Not long before we moved did my sister and I have different friend groups; for a while, we didn’t see each other eye-to-eye. When we moved here, I knew that this was the perfect chance for us to reconnect. We both took time to rebuild the relationship we used to have. I was a freshman and she was a sophomore when we started school here. We had similar classes and we did some of our homework together but we never did anything more than that. As my junior year began, my sister started applying to colleges and I saw myself planning to live my best life after she moved to college. One night she asked me to analyze one of her essays for her English class. Little did I know that this was a college essay that she poured her heart out to. In her essay, she had discussed how ‘family’ has shaped and influenced her: “Our relationship signifies a greater meaning of unity, obedience, and respect because we collaborate effectively, and live tranquilly. Sometimes family relationships are hard to maintain. There might be family disputes but in the end, we always love each other.” It took me a while to see that this was about us. It is through her essay that I finally got to connect with her and have the same relationship that we used to have. I held on to this since the moment she left for college.

As a sixteen-year-old who has lived in three countries and has been to sixteen countries, I am truly lucky to say that my actions and decisions have been influenced by many opportunities and challenges. Sometime during my junior year, I realized that I am capable of creating a future that I would like rather than follow my sister’s path, step-by-step. I received the chance to apply to a program for students planning to pursue a career in the medical field. Once I applied and was accepted, I was sure I wanted to proceed along my path and not my sister’s. The Practicum in Health Science program that I am in right now, has made me open up my eyes to all the new possibilities that are waiting for me in this life. Success here requires dedication and open-mindedness, and I feel better prepared for college and for what comes after.

My sister has been and still is the most influential person in my life. Not only is she someone who I go to get advice from, but she is also my best friend. From having our favourite cereal for breakfast with KDD 123 chocolate milk to our late-night calls to help each other with chemistry homework, my sister has been the best friend I never knew I needed in my life. Through all the good and bad, my sister has been with me, to support and guide me. I hope to continue to bring much joy and happiness to my sister and my family as they have taught me to do so in all things I do.

Everybody has a role model they desire to be like. Mahatma Gandhi, a well-known independence warrior, is my role model. He was not just a freedom fighter but also a kind person. I want to be like him because of his selfless devotion to his country. He demonstrated to us how we might significantly alter society without resorting to violence. His lessons have had a significant influence on my life. Gandhi is my chosen role model because he was a leader and a helpful individual. His labour and contribution inspire me to put forth an extra effort. He taught me that we should never give up on hope.

Role Model Essay

200 Words Essay On Role Model

My mother is my role model. She is a teacher, and she loves doing her work. I am always amazed at how hard she works and I constantly aspire to be like her. She teaches me a lot, and I obey her because I think that if I follow all she says, I'll one day be just like her. She juggles being a mother, a mentor, a pilot, a cook, and a humble person. In addition to wanting to be a pilot like her, I also want to be like her in every other way.

Although she works full-time, she manages things excellently, and even my friend's parents compliment her. I call her superwoman for handling multiple things at once so efficiently. My brother and I never feel that we dont have enough time with her because she manages to spend quality time with both of us.

We receive restaurant-quality food at home because of her excellent cooking, which includes experimenting with different recipes. She picked up the skill after getting married, and today she is among the best. I feel she could also be a master chef—a truly remarkable personality with a lot to learn.

She constantly takes care of me and supports me when I want to try something new, so I never feel let down.

500 Words Essay On Role Model

A person whose behaviour, example, or accomplishment is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people is how the term role model is defined. A positive, composed, and self-assured person is a wonderful role model. You don't want someone who attempts to bring you down. Everyone admires someone who is content with their accomplishments but yet aims for greater heights.

Learn Good Things From Role Models

The first is that young people are exposed to, is media nowadays that normalise certain aspects of television, movies, and music. If a young kid sees their favourite celebrity using drugs in a movie, especially if the famous actor is there in the scenes, they want to try drugs themselves and will have an opinion that there isn't anything wrong with it.

A role model should be someone we take inspiration from. Someone who is trying to be a productive member of society and looking to make a difference in the world is a great role model for anyone. We should always make role models who have good personalities and are hard-working, and who inspire us.

Celebrities can influence young people in both positive and harmful ways, depending on their habits and deeds. A celebrity could serve as an excellent example of behaviour by helping those affected by a natural disaster or a domestic terrorist attack or by devoting time and effort to a particular cause. Celebrities who abuse alcohol, drugs, engage in excessive partying, or other substances can negatively influence young people by setting a bad example. A famous person battling an addiction can be a very helpful role model by showing how he overcame his drug use.

My Role Model

APJ Abdul Kalam, a person of great vision and wisdom, is my role model. He has accomplished many wonderful things in life and has put his nation and people before everything else. He serves as my role model because of his hardwork and dedication. This outstanding man worked consistently to improve the lives of countless people and did wonders for his nation.

Throughout his life, APJ Abdul Kalam worked hard and accomplished many wonderful things. But some of his more notable accomplishments include the testing of nuclear weapons at Pokhran, the creation of the Agni and Prithvi missiles, and becoming the president of India. But there is one more thing that is quite significant which is that upon his resignation from the presidency, he began teaching since it was his love.

He frequently asserts that the younger generation is the nation's future; thus, he sets them on the proper course so that they can take India to new heights.

I have additional role models in my life besides Abdul Kalam, who come from all professions and fields. Ratan Tata, Bill Gates, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Kalpana Chawla, Virat Kohli, B.R. Ambedkar, my father, and my mother are among the individuals mentioned.

A role model's job is to motivate others to develop into better versions of themselves. They may be professors, business owners, famous people, close friends, or members of your family. Whatever the case, a role model's job is to motivate us by overcoming challenges and demonstrating to us what is possible when one is dedicated, persistent, and hardworking.

Compare & Contrast Essay: Modern Day Role Model

Most teenagers nowadays have a celebrity role model that they look up to. In theory, this should be a good person that no sensible human being would be ashamed to be like, but sadly many teenagers today choose their role model purely based on their fame, their money and their looks. This often leads to some very bad choices, but there’s no reason for this to even be the case, because good role models do not necessarily have to be poor and ugly. A good role model for young women could be Anne Hathaway, and we can compare her with a very bad role model like Paris Hilton.

Anne Hathaway became a famous actress by actually acting. She began on the stage, like many talented actors and actresses do, before moving into film. And she has won a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, an Emmy and many other awards, but she worked hard to get where she is today and got there through merit. Then you have Paris Hilton, who only became an ‘actress’ because she was already famous, for being rich through her great-grandfather. She first became really famous (well, infamous) for a sex tape that appeared ten years ago. So the role model for many teenagers is a woman whose acting debut was on a sex tape, when there are plenty of talented and dignified actresses that they could look up to.

Another key difference between the two is their private lives. Paris Hilton seems to love nothing more than broadcasting every detail of her life on reality television shows and in the media – every sort of media! She is the classic case of being famous just for being famous, and seems to value nothing other than being famous for the sake of it. Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, keeps her private life very private. She refuses to discuss details of her relationships with journalists, and has often said that family and friends come first over her career and that she would give up acting if needed. There are personal dramas to be found if you dig deep, but we all have them, and she chooses not to reveal everything to the whole world.

The final thing is the responsibility that goes with being so famous. Paris Hilton is seen all over the television and in magazines and newspapers, drunk at all-night parties, not caring that young, impressionable women who look up to her could be influenced by her behaviour. Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, refused to release the details of the diet she followed for Les Miserables because she didn’t want other people to copy and lose weight unhealthily. All in all, there’s no excuse to follow bad role models when there are so many better equivalents out there.

It's not unusual for a college admissions essay to talk about a person who played an important role in your development. Whether this is a parent, a friend, a coach, or a teacher, such essays can be powerful if they avoid common pitfalls.

Key Takeaways: An Essay on an Influential Person

  • Don't just describe a person you admire. Be analytical and reflective to explain why you admire them.
  • Essays focused on parents or celebrities are common and often not the best choice for your focus.
  • All good application essays are about you , even when you are writing about someone else, so make sure the admissions folks are getting to know you through your essay.

With the pre-2013 Common Application , one of the essay prompts stated, "Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence." While you won't find this question among the seven 2020-21 Common Application essay prompts , the current application still allows you to write about an influential person with the "topic of your choice" option . Some of the other prompts also leave the door open for writing about an influential person.

Do Much More than Describe the Influential Person

Any essay on an influential person needs to do much more than describe that person. The act of describing requires very little critical thought, and as a result, it doesn't demonstrate the kind of analytical, reflective, and thoughtful writing that will be required of you in college. Be sure to examine why the person was influential to you, and you should analyze the ways in which you have changed because of your relationship with the person.

Think Twice About Essays on Mom or Dad

There is nothing wrong with writing about one of your parents for this essay, but make sure your relationship with your parent is unusual and compelling in some way. The admissions folks get a lot of essays that focus on a parent, and your writing won't stand out if you simply make generic points about parenting. If you find yourself making points like "my Dad was a great role model" or "my mother always pushed me to do my best," rethink your approach to the question. Consider the millions of students who could write the exact same essay.

Don't Be Star Struck

In most cases, you should avoid writing an essay about the lead singer in your favorite band or the movie star who you idolize. Such essays can be okay if handled well, but often the writer ends up sounding like a pop culture junkie rather than a thoughtful independent thinker.

Obscure Subject Matter is Fine

Be sure to read Max's essay on an influential person. Max writes about a rather unremarkable junior high kid he encountered while teaching summer camp. The essay succeeds in part because the choice of subject matter is unusual and obscure. Among a million application essays, Max's will be the only one to focus on this young boy. Also, the boy isn't even a role model. Instead, he's an ordinary kid who inadvertently makes Max challenge his preconceptions.

The "Significant Influence" Need Not Be Positive

The majority of essays written about influential people focus on role models: "my Mom/Dad/brother/friend/teacher/neighbor/coach taught me to be a better person through his or her great example..." Such essays are often excellent, but they are also a bit predictable. Keep in mind that a person can have a significant influence without having an entirely "positive" influence. Jill's essay , for example, focuses on a woman with only a few positive qualities. You could even write about someone who is abusive or hateful. Evil can have as much "influence" on us as good.

You Are Also Writing About Yourself

When you choose to write about a person who has had an influence on you, you will be most successful if you are also reflective and introspective. Your essay will be partly about the influential person, but it is equally about you. To understand someone's influence on you, you need to understand yourself — your strengths, your short-comings, the areas where you still need to grow.

As with the college admissions essay, you need to make sure a response reveals your own interests, passions, personality, and character. The details of this essay need to reveal that you are the type of person who will contribute to the campus community in a positive way.

The Opening Days of Trump’s First Criminal Trial

Here’s what has happened so far in the unprecedented proceedings against a former u.s. president..

This transcript was created using speech recognition software. While it has been reviewed by human transcribers, it may contain errors. Please review the episode audio before quoting from this transcript and email [email protected] with any questions.

It’s the first day of the Trump trial and just walking out the door in my house. It’s a beautiful day, 6:11 AM. The thing that keeps running through my head is it’s kind of amazing that hundreds of jurors are going to show up at the Manhattan courthouse. And some of them are going to know what they’re there for — probably talking to their friends, their relatives about it.

Some of them are going to learn this morning talking to other jurors in line, asking what all the fuss is about. But I really do imagine that there’s going to be at least one potential juror who, headphones on, getting into court. Here they’re going to be there for the first criminal trial of Donald J. Trump. And just, I mean, how would you react?

[MUSIC PLAYING]

From “The New York Times,” I’m Michael Barbaro. This is “The Daily.” Today, what it’s been like inside the lower Manhattan courtroom, where political and legal history are being made? My colleague, Jonah Bromwich, on the opening days of the first criminal trial of a US President. It’s Thursday, April 18.

Is that his mic? Hi, there.

Hello. How are you?

I’m doing good.

OK. Thank you for coming in, Jonah —

Thank you for having me.

— in the middle of a trial. Can you just explain why you’re able to even be here?

Sure. So we happen to be off on Wednesdays during trial, so.

We being not “The New York Times,” but the courts.

That’s right.

Which is why we’re taping with you. And because we now have two full court days of this history-making trial now under our belts. And the thing about this trial that’s so interesting is that there are no cameras in the courtroom for the wider world.

There’s no audio recordings. So all we really have is and your eyes and your notebook, maybe your laptop. And so we’re hoping you can reconstruct for us the scene of the first two days of this trial and really the highlights.

Yeah, I’d be happy to. So on Monday morning, I left the subway. It’s before 7:00 AM. The sun is just rising over these grandiose court buildings in lower Manhattan.

I’m about to turn left onto Center Street. I’m right in front of the big municipal building.

And I turn onto Center Street. That’s where the courthouses are.

I’m crossing.

And I expected to see a big crowd. And it was even bigger than I had anticipated.

Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. Now, I finally see the crowd.

You have camera banks. You have reporters. You have the beginnings of what will eventually become a protest. And you have this most New York thing, which is just a big crowd of people.

[CHUCKLES]: Who just know something is going on.

That’s right. And what they know is going on is, of course, the first trial of an American president.

All right, I’m passing the camera, folks. Camera, camera, camera, camera. Here we go.

Let’s start with Sharon Crowley live outside the courthouse in Lower Manhattan.

I want to get right to ABC’S Aaron Katersky who’s outside of the courthouse.

Robert Costa is following it outside the courthouse in Lower Manhattan. Bob, I saw the satellite trucks lined up all in a row. Good morning.

Talk to us how we got here exactly.

So this is the case that was brought by the Manhattan district attorney. So prosecutors have accused Donald Trump of covering up the actions of his former fixer, Michael Cohen, after Cohen paid hush money to Stormy Daniels. Stormy Daniels had a story about having had sex with Donald Trump, which Trump has always denied.

Cohen paid her money, and then Trump reimbursed Cohen. And prosecutors say that Trump essentially defrauded the American people because he hid this information that could have been very important for the election from those people when he reimbursed Cohen.

Right. And as I remember it, he also misrepresented what that reimbursement was. Claimed it was a legal fee when, in fact, it was just reimbursing Michael Cohen for a hush money payment.

Exactly, yeah. He definitely didn’t say reimbursement for hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. It’s a cover up case. It’s a case about hiding information you don’t want people to see.

Right. And of course, the context of all this is that it is in the middle of a presidential election. It’s 2016. Trump wants to keep this secret, prosecutors allege, so that the American public doesn’t know about it and potentially hold it against him.

Right. And prosecutors are telling a story about election interference. They’re saying that Trump interfered with an election. And Trump himself is also using the phrase “election interference.” But he’s painting the trial itself as election interference as he now runs again in 2024.

Fascinating.

And because we’re in Manhattan, and because the jury pool is going to be largely Democratic, and the judge is a Democrat, and the district attorney is a Democrat, Trump keeps claiming he cannot get a fair shake. This is democrat central. And in democrat central, Trump doesn’t have a chance.

OK. So, what happens once you actually enter the courthouse?

Outside, there’s all this fanfare. But inside, it’s a little bit business as usual. So I go up to the 15th floor, and I walk into the courtroom, and I sit down, and it’s the same old courtroom. And we’re sitting and waiting for the former president.

Around 9:30, Trump walks in. He looks thin. He looks a little tired, kind of slumping forward, as if to say with his body like let’s get this over with. Here we go.

The judge walks in a little bit after that. And we think we’re all set for the trial to start, but that’s not what happens here. And in fact, there are a series of legal arguments about what the trial is going to look like and what evidence is going to be allowed in.

So, for example, prosecutors ask that they be allowed to admit into evidence headlines from “The National Enquirer” that were attacks on Trump’s 2016 opponents — on Ted Cruz, on Marco Rubio, on Ben Carson.

Because prosecutors are in some sense putting Trump’s 2016 campaign on trial. These headlines are a big part of that because what prosecutors say they show is that Trump had this ongoing deal with “The National Enquirer.” And the publisher would promote him, and it would publish damaging stories about his opponents. And then crucially, it would protect Trump from negative stories. And that’s exactly what prosecutors say happened with Stormy Daniels. That “The National Enquirer” tipped Cohen off about Stormy Daniels trying to sell her story of having had sex with Donald Trump, which he denies. And that led to the hush money payment to her. So what prosecutors are doing overall with these headlines is establishing a pattern of conduct. And that conduct, they say, was an attempt to influence the election in Trump’s favor.

And the judge agrees. He’s going to admit this evidence. And this is a pretty big win for the prosecution. But even though they win that one, they’re not winning everything.

They lose some important arguments here. One of them was that after the Access Hollywood tape came out, there were allegations of sexual assault against Donald Trump. And you know this, Michael, because you reported two of them — two of the three in question at this very trial.

Prosecutors had hoped to talk about those during trial in front of the jury to show the jurors that the Trump campaign was really, really focused on pushing back against bad press in the wake of the Access Hollywood tape in which Trump seemed to describe sexual assault. That was a big problem for the campaign. Campaign did everything it could to push back, including against these allegations that surfaced in the wake of the tape.

But the judge, saying that the allegations are hearsay — that they’re based on the women’s stories — says absolutely not. That is incredibly prejudicial to the defendant.

Interesting.

And that Donald Trump would actually not get a fair trial were those allegations to be mentioned. And so he will not let those in. The jurors will not hear about them.

So this is a setback, of course, for the prosecution, a victory for Trump’s legal team.

It’s a setback. And it also just shows you how these pre-trial motions shape the context of the trial. Think of the trial as a venue like a theater or an athletic contest of some sort. And these pre-trial motions are about what gets led into the arena and what stays out. The sexual assault allegations — out. “The National Enquirer” headlines — in.

OK. And how is Trump sitting there at the defense table reacting to these pre-trial motion rulings from the judge?

Well, as I’ve just said, this is very important stuff for his trial.

Right. Hugely important.

But it’s all happening in legal language, and I’m decoding it for you. But if you were sitting there listening to it, you might get a little lost, and you might get a little bored. And Trump, who is not involved in these arguments, seems to fall asleep.

Seems to fall asleep — you’re seeing this with your own eyes.

What we’re seeing, overall, including our colleague, Maggie Haberman, who’s in the overflow room and has a direct view of Trump’s face — I’m sitting behind him in the courtroom, so I can’t see his face that well.

You guys are double teaming this.

That’s right. I’m sitting behind him, but Maggie is sitting in front of him. And what she sees is not only that his eyes are closed. That wouldn’t get you to he is asleep.

And we have to be really careful about reporting that he’s asleep, even if it seems like a frivolous thing. But what happens is that his head is dropping down to his chest, and then it’s snapping back up. So you’ve seen that, when a student —

I’ve done that.

(CHUCKLES) Yeah. We all kind of know that feeling of snapping awake suddenly. And we see the head motion, and it happens several times.

Lawyers kind of bothering him, not quite shaking him, but certainly trying to get his attention. And that head snapping motion, we felt confident enough to report that Trump fell asleep.

During his own criminal trial’s opening day.

Does someone eventually wake him up?

He wakes up. He wakes up. And in fact, in the afternoon, he’s much more animated. It’s almost as if he wants to be seen being very much awake.

Right. So once these pre-trial motions are ruled on and Trump is snapped back to attention, what happens?

Well, what happens in the courtroom is that the trial begins. The first trial of an American president is now in session. And what marks that beginning is jurors walking into the room one by one — many of them kind of craning their necks over at Donald Trump, giggling, raising their eyebrows at each other, filing into the room, and being sworn in by the judge. And that swearing in marks the official beginning of the trial.

The beginning is jury selection, and it’s often overlooked. It’s not dramatized in our kind of courtroom dramas in the same way. But it’s so important. It’s one of the most important parts of the case. Because whoever sits on the jury, these are the 12 people who are going to decide whether Trump is guilty or whether Trump is innocent.

So how does jury selection actually look and feel and go?

So, jury selection is a winnowing process. And in order to do that, you have to have these people go through a bunch of different hurdles. So the first hurdle is, after the judge describes the case, he asks the group — and there are just short of 100 of them — whether they can be fair and impartial. And says that if they can’t, they should leave. And more than half the group is instantly gone.

So after we do this big mass excusal, we’re left with the smaller group. And so now, jurors are getting called in smaller groups to the jury box. And what they’re going to do there is they’re going to answer this questionnaire.

And this part of the process is really conducted by the judge. The lawyers are involved. They’re listening, but they’re not yet asking questions of the jurors themselves.

And what’s on the questionnaire?

Well, it’s 42 questions. And the questions include, their education, their professional histories, their hobbies, what they like to do whether you’re a member of QAnon or Antifa.

Whether you’re far left or far right.

That’s right. Whether you’ve read “The Art of the Deal,” Trump’s book, which some prospective jurors had.

Right. It was a bestseller in its time.

That’s right. And some of it can be answered in yes/no questions, but some of it can be answered more at length. So some of the prospective jurors are going very, very fast. Yes, no, no, no, yes.

Right. Because this is an oral questionnaire.

That’s right. But some of them are taking their time. They’re expanding on their hobbies. So the potential juror in seat 3, for example, is talking about her hobbies. And she says some running, hiking. And then she said, I like to go to the club, and it got a huge laugh. And you get that kind of thing in jury selection, which is one of the reasons it’s so fun. It’s the height of normality in this situation that is anything but normal.

Right. The most banal answer possible delivered in front of the former president And current Republican nominee for president.

Well, that’s one of the fascinating parts about all this, right? is that they’re answering in front of Trump. And they’re answering questions about Trump in front of Trump. He doesn’t react all that much. But whenever someone says they’ve read “The Art of the Deal —” and there are a few of those — he kind of nods appreciatively, smiles. He likes that. It’s very clear. But because there are so many questions, this is taking forever, especially when people are choosing to answer and elaborate and digress.

This is when you fall asleep.

This Is. When I would have fallen asleep if I were a normal person.

And by the end of the day. Where does jury selection stand?

Well, the questionnaire is another device for shrinking that jury pool. And so the questionnaire has almost these little obstacles or roadblocks, including, in fact, a question that jurors have seen before — whether they would have any problem being fair and impartial?

Hmm. And they ask it again.

They’re asked it again. And they’re asked in this more individualized way. The judge is questioning them. They’re responding.

So, remember that woman who said she liked to go to the club got a big laugh. She reaches question 34. And question 34 reads, “Do you have any strong opinions or firmly-held beliefs about former President Donald Trump or the fact that he is a current candidate for president that would interfere with your ability to be a fair and impartial juror?” She said, yes, she does have an opinion that would prevent her from being fair and impartial. And she, too, is excused.

So that’s how it works. People answer the questionnaire, and they get excused in that way, or they have a scheduling conflict once they reach the jury box. And so to answer your question, Michael. At the end of day one, given all these problems with the questionnaire and the length of time it’s taken to respond to and people getting dismissed based on their answers, there is not a single juror seated for this trial.

And it’s starting to look like this is going to be a really hard case for which to find an impartial jury.

That’s the feeling in the room, yeah.

We’ll be right back.

So Jonah, let’s turn to day 2. What does jury selection look like on Tuesday?

So when the day begins, it looks almost exactly like it looked when the day ended on Monday. We’re still with the questionnaire, getting some interesting answers. But even though it feels like we’re going slow, we are going.

And so we’ve gone from about 100 people to now there’s about 24 the room there’s 18 the jury box. And by the time we hit lunch, all those people have answered all those questions, and we are ready for the next step in the process.

Voir dire. And what it is the heart of jury selection. This is the point where the lawyers themselves finally get to interview the jurors. And we get so much information from this moment because the lawyers ask questions based on what they want out of the jurors.

So the prosecution is asking all these different kinds of questions. The first round of wajir is done by a guy named Joshua Steinglass, a very experienced trial lawyer with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. And he’s providing all these hypotheticals. I’ll give you one example because I found this one really, really interesting. He provides a hypothetical about a man who wants his wife killed and essentially hires a hitman to do it. And what he asked the jurors is, if that case were before you, would you be able to see that the man who hired the hitman was a part of this crime?

And of course, what he’s really getting at is, can you accept that even though Michael Cohen, Trump’s fixer, made this payment, Trump is the guy who hired him to do it?

That’s right. If there are other people involved, will jurors still be able to see Donald Trump’s hands behind it all?

Fascinating. And what were some of the responses?

People mostly said, yes, we accept that. So that’s how the prosecution did it.

But the defense had a totally different method of voir dire. They were very focused on their client and people’s opinions about their client.

So what kind of questions do we get from them?

So the lawyer, Todd Blanche, is asking people, what do you make of President Trump? What do you think of President Trump?

And what are some of the responses to that?

Well, there’s this incredible exchange with one of the jurors who absolutely refuses to give his opinion of Donald Trump. They go back and forth and back and forth. And the juror keeps insisting you don’t need to know my opinion of him. All you need to know is that I’m going to be fair and impartial, like I said. And Blanch pushes, and the guy pushes back. And the only way the guy budges is he finally kind of confesses almost at the end that, yes, I am a Democrat, and that’s all we get.

And what ends up happening to this potential juror?

Believe it or not, he got dismissed.

[LAUGHS]: I can believe it. And of course, it’s worth saying that this guy and everybody else is being asked that question just feet from Trump himself.

That’s right. And you might think you were going to get a really kind of spicy, like, popcorn emoji-type exchange from that. But because these are now jurors who have said they can be fair and impartial, who, to some extent, want to be on this jury or at least wouldn’t mind being on this jury, they’re being very restrained.

Mostly, what they are emphasizing — much like that guy just described dis — is that they can be fair. They can be impartial. There’s one woman who gives this really remarkable answer.

She says, I thought about this last night. I stayed up all night. I couldn’t sleep, thinking about whether I could be fair. It’s really important to me, and I can.

What ends up happening to that particular juror?

She’s also dismissed. And she’s dismissed without any reason at all. The defense decides it doesn’t like her. It doesn’t want her on the jury. And they have a certain number of chances to just get rid of jurors — no questions asked.

Other jurors are getting dismissed for cause — I’m doing air quotes with my hands — which means that the lawyers have argued they actually revealed themselves through their answers or through old social media posts, which are brought up in the courtroom, to be either non-credible, meaning they’ve said they can be fair and they can’t, or somehow too biased to be on the jury.

Wait, can I just dial into that for a second? Are lawyers researching the jurors in real time going online and saying — I’m making this up — but Jonah Bromwich is a potential juror, and I’m going to go off into my little corner of the courtroom and Google everything you’ve ever said? Is that what’s happening in the room?

Yeah, there’s a whole profession dedicated to that. It’s called jury consultant, and they’re very good at finding information on people in a hurry. And it certainly looked as if they were in play.

Did a social media post end up getting anybody kicked off this jury?

Yes, there were posts from 2016 era internet. You’ll remember that time as a very heated one on the internet, Facebook memes are a big thing. And so there’s all kinds of lock him up type memes and rhetoric. And some of the potential jurors here have used those. And those jurors are dismissed for a reason.

So we have these two types of dismissals, right? We have these peremptory dismissals — no reason at all given. And we have for cause dismissals.

And the process is called jury selection. But you don’t actually get selected for a jury. The thing is to make it through all these obstacles.

You’re left over.

Right. And so when certain jurors are not dismissed, and they’ve made it through all these stages, by the end of the day, we have gone from zero juror seated to seven jurors who will be participating in Donald Trump’s trial.

Got it. And without going through all seven, just give us a little bit of a sketch of who so far is on this jury. What stands out?

Well, not that much stands out. So we’ve got four men. We’ve got three women. One lives on the Upper East Side. One lives in Chelsea. Obviously, they’re from all over Manhattan.

They have these kind of very normal hobbies like spending time with family and friends. They have somewhat anonymous jobs. We’ve got two lawyers. We’ve got someone who’s worked in sales.

So there’s not that much identifying information. And that’s not an accident . One of the things that often happens with jury selection, whether it be for Donald Trump or for anyone else, is the most interesting jurors — the jurors that kind of catch your attention during the process — they get picked off because they are being so interesting that they interest one or the other side in a negative way. And soon they’re excused. So most of the jurors who are actually seated —

Are not memorable.

Are not that memorable, save one particular juror.

OK. All right, I’ll bite. What do I need to know about that one particular juror?

So let me tell you about a prospective juror who we knew as 374, who will now be juror number five. She’s a middle school teacher from Harlem. And she said that she has friends who have really strong opinions about Trump, but she herself does not. And she insisted several times, I am not a political person.

And then she said this thing that made me quite surprised that the prosecution was fine with having her on the jury. She said, quote, “President Trump speaks his mind, and I’d rather that than someone who’s in office who you don’t know what they’re thinking.”

Hmm. So she expressed approval of President Trump.

Yeah, it was mild approval. But the thing is, especially for the defense in this trial, all you need is one juror. One juror can tie up deliberations in knots, and you can end with a hung jury. And this is actually something that I saw firsthand. In 2019, I was the foreperson on a jury.

How you like that?

Yeah. And the trial was really complicated, but I had thought while we were doing the trial, oh, this is going to be a really easy decision. I thought the defendant in that case was guilty. So we get into deliberations, but there’s this one juror who keeps gumming up the works every time we seem to be making progress, getting a conversation started.

This juror proverbially throws up his hands and says, I am not convicting. This man is innocent. And we talked and we talked. And as the foreperson, I was trying to use all my skills to mediate.

But any time we made any progress, this guy would blow it up. And long story short, hung jury — big victory for the defense lawyer. And we come out of the room. And she points at this juror. The guy —

The defense lawyer.

The defense lawyer points at this juror who blew everything up. And she said, I knew it. I knew I had my guy.

OK. I don’t want to read too much into what you said about that one juror. But should I read between the lines to think that if there’s a hung jury, you wonder if it might be that juror?

That’s what everyone in the courtroom is wondering not just about this juror, but about every single person who was selected. Is this the person who swings the case for me? Is this the person who swings the case against me?

These juries are so complex. It’s 12 people who don’t know each other at the start of the trial and, by the end of the trial, have seen each other every morning and are experiencing the same things, but are not allowed to have talked about the case until deliberations start. In that moment when deliberations start —

You’re going to learn a whole lot about each other.

That’s right. There’s this alchemical moment where suddenly, it all matters. Every personality selected matters. And that’s why jury selection is so important. And that’s why these last two days are actually one of the most important parts of this trial.

OK. So by my math, this trial will require five more jurors to get to 12. I know also they’re going to need to be alternates. But from what you’re saying what looked like a really uphill battle to get an impartial jury or a jury that said it could be impartial — and Trump was very doubtful one could be found — has turned out to not be so hard to find.

That’s right. And in fact, we went from thinking, oh, boy, this is going awfully slowly, to the judge himself saying we could be doing opening arguments as soon as Monday morning. And I think that highlights something that’s really fascinating both about this trial and about the jury selection process overall.

One of the things that lawyers have been arguing about is whether or not it’s important to figure out what jurors’ opinions about Donald Trump are. And the prosecution and, I think, the judge have really said, no, that’s not the key issue here. The key issue is not whether or not people have opinions about Donald Trump.

Right. Who doesn’t have an opinion about Donald Trump?

Exactly. They’re going to. Automatically, they’re going to. The question is whether or not they can be fair and impartial. And the seven people we already have seated, and presumably the five people that we’re going to get over the next few days and however many alternates — we expect six — are all going to have answered that question, not I hate Trump; I love Trump, but I can weigh in on the former president’s innocence or guilt, and I can do it as fairly as humanly possible.

Now, Trump is not happy about this. He said after court yesterday, quote, We have a highly conflicted judge, and he’s rushing this trial.” And I think that he is going to see these beats of the system the criminal justice system as it works on him as he is experiencing it as unfair. That is typically how he talks about it and how he views it.

But what he’s getting is what defendants get. This is the system in New York, in the United States. This is its answer to how do you pick a fair jury? Well, you ask people can you be fair? And you put them through this process, and the outcome is 12 people.

And so I think we’re going to see this over and over again in this trial. We’re going to see Trump experience the criminal justice system.

And its routines.

Yeah, openings, witnesses, evidence, closings. He’s going to go through all of it. And I think, at every turn, it makes sense to expect him to say, well, this is not fair. Well, the judge is doing something wrong. Well, the prosecutors are doing something wrong. Well, the jury is doing something wrong.

But at the end of the day, he’s going to be a defendant, and he’s going to sit, mostly silently if his lawyers can make him do that, and watch this process play itself out. So the system is going to try and treat him like any other defendant, even though, of course —

— he’s not. And he is going to fight back like no other defendant would, like no other defendant could. And that tension, him pushing against the criminal justice system as it strives to treat him, as it would anyone else, is going to be a defining quality of this trial.

Well, Jonah, thank you very much. We appreciate it.

Of course. Thanks so much for having me. [MUSIC PLAYING]

PS, have you ever fallen asleep in a trial?

I have not.

[CHUCKLES]:

Here’s what else you need to know today.

It’s clear the Israelis are making a decision to act. We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible and in a way that, as I said —

During a visit to Jerusalem on Wednesday, Britain’s foreign Secretary left little doubt that Israel would retaliate against Iran for last weekend’s aerial attack, despite pressure from the United States and Britain to stand down. The question now is what form that retaliation will take? “The Times” reports that Israel is weighing several options, including a direct strike on Iran, a cyber attack, or targeted assassinations. And —

Look, history judges us for what we do. This is a critical time right now, critical time on the world stage.

In a plan that could threaten his job, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson will put a series of foreign aid bills up for a vote this weekend. The bills, especially for aid to Ukraine, are strongly opposed by far-right House Republicans, at least two of whom have threatened to try to oust Johnson over the plan.

I can make a selfish decision and do something that’s different, but I’m doing here what I believe to be the right thing. I think providing lethal aid to Ukraine right now is critically important. I really do. I really — [MUSIC PLAYING]
