You’ve probably seen the phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” printed on office mugs and motivational posters. But what exactly does it mean and what does good teamwork look like?

The phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” essentially means that dividing tasks and responsibilities among a team can lead to better outcomes than a single person doing the same task, says Sabrina Romanoff , PsyD, a clinical psychologist and professor at Yeshiva University.

The saying was initially coined by American clergyman John C. Maxwell. Maxwell published an eponymous book in 2002, in which he wrote, “Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team.” In his book, Maxwell discusses the importance of working together collaboratively and shares some principles for building a strong team.

The phrase caught on and has become popular over the years. In this article, we explore the benefits of teamwork, the characteristics of good teamwork, as well as some steps to help you be a good team player and build a strong team.

Below, Dr. Romanoff explains why teamwork is important and the benefits it can offer:

  • Improves efficiency and output: Teamwork is important because much more can be accomplished as part of a team than a single person working alone. Successful teams are much more efficient and effective at completing tasks than individuals.
  • Produces better solutions: Teamwork allows the opportunity for diverse perspectives to tackle problems and find solutions that are more resourceful and effective than one person’s input alone. When multiple people are contributing, more knowledge, viewpoints, and feedback are incorporated, helping teammates arrive at more holistic solutions.
  • Offers a larger pool of resources: Each member of the team can contribute their efforts, knowledge, abilities, and strengths to the task at hand. The team can tap into the resources each member provides to tackle new challenges.
  • Promotes growth and learning: When people work together, there is an opportunity for each member of the team to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
  • Creates strong bonds among teammates: Collaborating on shared tasks, helping others, and working together helps teammates foster strong connections. People bond when they work together toward a common goal in an encouraging and supportive environment.
  • Fosters a feeling of belonging: Teamwork also taps into our human need for belonging to a community or group and feeling like we are working towards something that is bigger than ourselves.
  • Reduces stress: People tend to feel more supported when they’re part of a team. They often experience less perceived stress because they’re not facing the problem alone.

According to Dr. Romanoff, these are some of the characteristics of good teamwork: 

  • Shared goal: A successful team articulates and agrees on a common goal that has meaning to its members. Shared understanding of the goal the team is working toward is crucial so that everyone is on the same page and the team can operate as a cohesive unit.
  • Cooperation: It’s important for teammates to actively listen to one another, cooperate with each other, and help one other out when required. A collaborative approach leads to more efficient and effective output.
  • Respect: When people feel respected by their teammates, they are able to freely share ideas and opinions without fear of rejection or judgment. This level of safety sets the stage for greater commitment among teammates, originality, and novelty.
  • Trust: There is trust that each member will deliver on their role for the team and meet their commitments. Team members take their responsibilities seriously and commit to following through on behalf of the individual members but also for the collective group. Each member is also trusted with placing the team’s interests above their own.
  • Coordination: The team is well-organized so everyone is systematically and efficiently working together toward deadlines and shared goals. Effective communication and coordination are the bedrock of good teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships: There are strong relationships among teammates. Team members care about each other and relationships are deeper than just their roles in the team. For instance, there is knowledge and sharing about people’s personal lives, and interest in other’s talents, skills, and interests. Team members take the time to celebrate achievements or have social outings outside of work to get to know each other as people.
  • Effective conflict-resolution: Members of the team understand that conflict is inevitable but they are able to successfully manage and resolve them, by prioritizing the team’s goal over individual differences and conflicts. This means addressing issues among team members as they come up instead of pushing them under the rug, while also keeping differences among members in perspective so they don’t override the group’s mission.

Dr. Romanoff shares some strategies that can help you foster good teamwork:

  • Define the goal: Define the mission and goal of the team. These can be co-constructed with your teammates, as team members are likely to have more buy-in when they have a role in choosing goals that are personally meaningful to them.
  • Regularly ask for and provide feedback: Checking in with team members is the best way to implement needed change. This doesn’t have to be a formal process. Instead, openly discussing how team members are feeling can be normalized as part of the team’s culture.
  • Maintain transparency: Be transparent, not just about the goal of the team but the goal of smaller tasks and mandates. This helps people understand how each job and agenda item is contributing to the overall mission of the organization.
  • Making learning a continuous priority: Offer trainings, reading material, and resources to team members. Bring in people to teach on new topics and host events where members can share new information and passions with their teammates.
  • Recognize accomplishments: Give team members kudos for a job well done and have their good work acknowledged by their peers and managers. 
  • Foster a culture of gratitude: It can be helpful to foster a culture of gratitude by having members consider what they are grateful for within the team or in their day, to help them reflect on what they appreciate in another.

  • Commit to the goal: Commit to the group process and the team’s goal. 
  • Take ownership: Take your tasks and responsibilities seriously. Be accountable to yourself and your teammates. Be cognizant of how your actions impact the team.
  • Be flexible: Be flexible , open to change, and willing to take on new challenges or responsibilities to help your team.
  • Work with your peers, not against them: Don’t compete with your peers. Instead try to work together toward a common goal and help each other out.
  • Maintain a positive mindset: Be positive and optimistic. This mindset is contagious and will draw other team members towards you.
  • Stay true to your values: Have integrity and speak your mind to advocate for the greater good and values of the group, even if it means going against what other group members are saying.

From his take on the different types of teams we’re all part of, to his broader definition of dreams, here are the nuggets from the book that fellow fans of teamwork will find most interesting. 

Where corporate’s favorite corny quote comes from

“Teamwork makes the dream work” feels like one of those age-old mantras that’s been part of our culture for generations, but it’s actually relatively new. 

According to our amateur historiography of the phrase, a version of it made an appearance in the New York Mets’ 1986 World Championship song. Check out this absolute banger that had everyone singing, “We got the teamwork…that makes the dream work!”

Fast forward to 2002, when Maxwell’s leadership book cemented teamwork’s unofficial motto in history – that ever-present (and, yes, maybe a little done-to-death) tagline of collaboration: “Teamwork makes the dream work.” The turn of phrase is plastered on everything from wall decals to coffee mugs to t-shirts to coasters.

We took a gander at the now-20-year-old book, and all snark aside, we appreciate this little slice of teamwork history and the fundamental truths it shares, which – unlike the book’s hallmark quote – never get tired.

What makes a dream team?

Maxwell articulates the intangible characteristics of a great team, and in a sense challenges the concept of a team altogether. When most of us hear the word, we think of work environments, sports, and competitions. But in Teamwork Makes the Dream Work (along with his other book, The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork ), Maxwell offers a different perspective.

“Teams come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re married, you and your spouse are a team. If you are employed by an organization, you and your colleagues are a team. If you volunteer your time, you and your fellow workers are a team…Every day in some way, you are part of a team. The question is not, ‘Will you participate in something that involves others?’ The question is, ‘Will your involvement with others be successful?’”

While there are many types of teams, there are a number of generally agreed upon characteristics high-performing teams rely on . In Maxwell’s book, these core traits manifest as “10 C’s”:

  • Commitment that inspires results
  • Contributions that make a difference
  • Competency that raises the standard
  • Communication that increases effectiveness
  • Cooperation that creates harmony
  • Chemistry that enhances personal connection
  • Creativity that enlarges the team’s potential
  • Conflict management that reduces tension rapidly
  • Cohesiveness that allows for rapid change
  • Community that makes the journey fun

In our business (and likely in yours too), products and services are never “done.” They’ exist in a continuous improvement cycle – and the same goes for teams. Even if a group embodies every one of those 10 C’s, they should sieze opportunities to foster even stronger connections and boost performance so they can go farther together than any of them could on their own.

So Maxwell’s idea of teamwork is rooted in that list of C words – where does The Dream come in? In essence, Maxwell is espousing the idea that, beyond professional output or success in the traditional sense, teams should also prioritize bigger, aspirational, dreamier goals and ambitions. 

We co-sign on this approach – we set goals in similar ways on our own teams. Beyond defining specific targets to work towards – OKRs and KPIs , for example – defining a BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) or higher-level purpose inspires teams to think bigger about the impact they can make. Tons of research, including this study by Deloitte , shows that purpose-driven companies gain more market share, grow faster, and have happier employees and customers. 

Maxwell also points out that being part of a team pushes people to dream even bigger than they would solo. “Sometimes you have to sacrifice a small dream of your own in order to accomplish a bigger dream with someone else,” he writes. “It takes a courageous and humble person to make such a decision. But look what can result.” 

Dreaming big may seem unrealistic or unproductive when there are immediate needs to address. But defining those pie-in-the-sky dreams not only helps rally the team around a common vision, but also helps determine whether those immediate needs are truly the best way to “make the dream work.”

Overall, Maxwell’s findings directly align to a core truth that we embrace today: Effective teamwork is essential to personal and professional success. It gives companies, competitors, and couples a real advantage in several key areas:

Better problem solving

“No problem is insurmountable. With a little courage, teamwork, and determination, a person can overcome anything.”

Science tells us that multiple minds are better than one when solving complex problems. “We found that groups of size three, four, and five outperformed the best individuals,” says Dr. Patrick Laughlin , a researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “[We] attribute this performance to the ability of people to work together to generate and adopt correct responses, reject erroneous responses, and effectively process information.” 

Opportunities for growth and innovation

“Empowered team members achieve more and help the team to continually improve.”

Some of the most innovative ideas and biggest advancements have happened when disperate people and ideas collide. “Most people think success comes from surrounding yourself with others that are like you,” says Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect . “But true success and breakthrough innovation involves discomfort. Discomfort pushes you to grow. This is where difference of experience, opinion, and perspective come in. Diversity is a well-documented pathway to unlocking new opportunities, overcoming new challenges, and gaining new insights.”Research shows innovation can only happen when communication within the team is open and collaborative, notes Ben Wigert, lead researcher for Gallup’s workplace management practice. The most creative solutions surface when team members feel safe enough to ask questions (even if they feel silly), propose unique ideas, and receive constructive feedback. 

Happier team members

“[A team] helps you fulfill the desires of your heart.”

Even if Maxwell’s rhetoric feels a bit cheesy, our own research found that team members were 80 percent more likely to report higher emotional well-being when honest feedback, mutual respect, and personal openness were encouraged. In other words, they were markedly happier and more fulfilled when they were part of a healthy team. 

Keeping employees happy is not only good for people, but also good for business. Research from the University of Warwick in England suggests happy employees are up to 20 percent more productive than unhappy employees.  

Teamwork leads to higher satisfaction in our personal lives too. In fact, a UCLA study shows that couples who have clearly defined responsibilities and agree to share chores are more likely to be happier. (Feel free to quote us next time you remind your partner or roommate to take out the trash.)

Lower risk of burnout

“The bad news is that people don’t have the energy to do more personally at [age] sixty than at twenty. The good news is that if you’re part of a team, you can do more collectively at sixty than you could at twenty.”

If we set the casual ageism aside (our collective thinking about generational differences has changed a lot in the last 20 years!) and acknowledge that anyone can fall victim to burnout, we agree that teamwork is the salve. There are many proven ways to reduce burnout inside and outside of work, including creating a positive and supportive environment, setting clear expectations, alleviating stress where possible, communicating effectively, removing barriers, and, you guessed it, working as a team (remember those 10 C’s?). Gallup found that “When people work together and support one another, the workload gets lighter and challenges seem smaller.”

Higher productivity

“[A team] multiplies your value to others…It allows you to help others do their best.”

A recognition-rich environment , where colleagues acknowledge that multiplied value they get from their teammates, is a direct path to higher productivity. Getting a pat on the back from someone higher up or more experienced can make us feel more motivated, and hearing kudos from our equals or other team members may be even more effective. In the TINYpulse Employee Engagement and Organizational Culture Report , which surveyed more than 200,000 employees, participants reported that having the respect of their peers was the number-one reason they go above and beyond at work.

Smarter risk-taking – and fewer mistakes

“Are you content just to dream it, or are you willing to take the risk and try to live it?” 

When we’re on our own, we may be more hesitant to put ourselves out there and pursue our dreams. But when we have the support of a team at work or at home, we know we have people to fall back on in case of failure. That psychological safety typically makes us feel more secure taking risks – and more likely to reap the rewards. 

Likewise, when a team feels less frazzled, they make fewer mistakes. That’s worth keeping in mind, especially since 61 percent of people cite work as a significant source of stress .

The now-famous “teamwork makes the dream work” was first coined by clergyman John C. Maxwell in his book of the same name in 2002. While the quote seems dated, it remains just as relevant in today’s work environment as it was 18 years ago. Teamwork is what teams do to maximize their chances of achieving their goals, like winning a basketball game, putting on a stellar school play, or obtaining a high mark on a group assignment. Sometimes it can be difficult for people to come together and work effectively as a team. In this article, we talk about what teamwork is and how teams can improve the way they work together before, during, and after games. We also explain how teammates can support one another when faced with obstacles and conflict.

At some point in our lives, most of us will be a part of a team. Maybe we will join a sports team, be cast in a school play, or be assigned a group project to complete. You may have heard your teachers, parents, and coaches talk about the importance of teamwork and how working together as a group can help teams achieve their goals [ 1 ]. But what exactly is teamwork? Teamwork behaviors are the things that team members do as a group to meet team goals, like winning a basketball game or completing a group assignment [ 2 ]. In this article, we will describe how the members of a basketball team can use teamwork before they play a game, while they are playing, and even after a match, to improve the way they play as a group ( Figure 1 ). While we will be using a basketball team as the main example throughout this article, everything we discuss can apply to any type of team, in any sport or other activity.

How Can Teams Work Together Before Competition?

The first part of teamwork that we must consider is preparation . This is when team members figure out what they want to achieve during the season or even in the next game. It can be very helpful for teams to take some time to plan how they want to play as a team [ 2 , 3 ]. A basketball team might decide to set some team goals before a game. One goal might be to improve their skills, such as passing, shooting, or rebounding. The team might also set the goal of being supportive toward teammates during the game. To meet these goals, it is important that the team talks about how they plan to achieve each goal [ 2 , 3 ]. For example, if the goal is to improve skills like dribbling or shooting, the team may decide to set aside time during each practice to work on those specific skills. If the team’s goal is to be supportive to teammates, the team may choose to talk about how a supportive teammate acts, both on and off the court. The team may make it their goal to cheer on their teammates, to give each teammate a high five, or to provide some encouragement to a teammate who may be struggling with a skill. Similarly, we might use preparation with our families when we are planning a trip or a hosting a party. It might be helpful for all family members to discuss what they will do to help prepare for an event, like packing the suitcases before a trip or preparing the food for the party guests. If everyone identifies a way that they can help, then things will likely go more smoothly.

Game Day: Teamwork During Competition

The second part of teamwork is focused on what happens during a game. For the basketball team to play at their best, they must consider the 3 Cs: coordination, cooperation, and communication [ 2 , 3 ]. Coordination allows each team member to know what his or her role is on the court. For example, when the team is trying to score a basket, each team member needs to be in the right spot at the right time, so that everyone’s movements are timed properly [ 2 ]. Next, it is important for a team practice cooperation , by having all members perform their individual roles to their full potential, while also keeping an eye out for teammates [ 2 , 3 ]. When a basketball team is on defense, the players on the court not only need to focus on who they are guarding, but they also need to be ready to help a teammate who needs back up. The last of the 3 Cs is communication , which means what we say to our teammates during play. Talking with teammates is important because it helps everyone stay on the same page—particularly since things can change so quickly during a game. Communication helps teams adjust or change things up on the fly [ 2 , 3 ]. Outside of sport, we can use communication to talk to our families, friends, and loved ones about how we are feeling or how our day went. Communication allows our teammates and loved ones to stay up-to-date on our lives as well as to understand when we might be feeling down and in need of cheering up.

Improving Teamwork Post-Game

The final phase of teamwork focuses on how we can improve teamwork after the game is over. During a game, things happen quickly and sometimes we do not have time to make big changes or discuss how we performed as a team until after the game. A team can do two things to improve their teamwork after the game is over: evaluate or discuss as a group what the team did well and what needs to be improved, and decide how the team will make any adjustments or changes to the way they play [ 2 , 3 ].

It is not only important to identify your team’s strengths and weaknesses but also to discuss how your team can maintain their strengths while also improving their weaker aspects. Perhaps your basketball team did an excellent job defending your opponent during the game, but only made half of their free throws. With this information in mind, it is key to make the necessary adjustments as a group. To help the team score a higher percentage of free-throw shots during a game, maybe the team needs to spend more time in practice, breaking down free-throw shooting technique; or perhaps the team can create drills to help players make their free-throw shots under pressure.

Think for yourself: Think back to a game or situation in which your team did not perform at their best. Name one thing your team could improve on and suggest one way that the team could improve that aspect before the next game.

Sticking Together Throughout the Season

Working together as a team is not always easy! Each team member is different and unique. We all have different strengths, weaknesses, personalities, and past experiences. Often, individual team members and the group as a whole encounter obstacles during a season. Therefore, it is important that every team is prepared to respond to obstacles and support its members when problems arise. Even though you or one of your teammates may be dealing with a personal problem that is separate from the team, it could still have an effect on how the team performs [ 4 ]. Supportive teams and teammates always find both big and small ways to help team members who need it. Support might be as simple as offering words of encouragement to a teammate who is struggling or talking to a trusted adult (parent, teacher, or coach) about a problem you or one of your teammates are dealing with.

In any team, it is possible that conflict between teammates will arise. Not only is conflict normal, but it can also be a positive learning opportunity for teams. Teams, families, and friendship groups can prepare for potential conflicts between members by having strategies to help manage those situations. Strategies that help individuals express themselves and communicate their concerns can limit the amount of damage that a disagreement or issue can cause a team, family, or friendship group [ 5 ].

Think for yourself: Imagine one of your teammates or friends is feeling nervous before a big game or other challenge. What could you, as a teammate or friend, do to help that person?

Final Thoughts on Teamwork

We will all find ourselves on a team on the field, court, classroom, or stage at some point in our lives. How we interact with our teammates massively impacts not only the way we perform but also how much fun we have with our teams [ 1 , 2 ]. We hope you have learned some tools to help you and your teammates work together before, during, and after a game or other event. Being a good teammate is not solely about helping your team win , but also about supporting your team members and helping each other be the best we can be. As they say, teamwork makes the dream work.

I’m not talking about a simple group of people working together but a team capable of doing the extraordinary. A team that stands out from the rest. This article will introduce you to 10 qualities that all dream teams have in common and how you can implement these qualities within your organization.

1) They have a shared purpose

One of the biggest reasons employees go above and beyond for their companies is that they feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. They care about its mission, vision, and values and accomplish specific objectives that align with these elements. By ensuring all team members understand what you’re trying to achieve, they’ll work according to this goal, making them more efficient and effective.

2) They have a clear delegation of responsibilities

Every member of a dream team is assigned a task that fits their skill set for the job to be completed efficiently. Dream teams understand who does what, where the limits are, and who is responsible for what actions. This way, they can avoid misunderstandings about deadlines or responsibilities and focus on the project.

3) They have a positive morale

All dream team members share good vibes, affecting how much fun they have at work and creating trust. As I’ve already mentioned, the word moral comes from the Latin word “mōrēs,” which means “moral character.” Dream team members don’t behave like friends all the time, but they still get along and motivate each other when needed.

4) They have efficient processes

Members of dream teams are aware of their current projects’ status, know what needs to be done, and why it’s crucial. In other words, if a project fails, it’ll be able to trace the initial reason for its failure. In addition, dream team members always ask questions if something doesn’t make sense or isn’t clear enough, which helps them overcome challenges more easily.

5) They are open to constructive criticism

While it may seem like dream team members don’t leave room for constructive feedback , nothing could be further from the truth. Dream teams feed on the value of constructive criticism because they know that this feedback can help them improve and enhance their performance. So if you want your employees to work as a dream team, you need to encourage your employees to tell you what’s working and what isn’t while avoiding the fear of negative consequences.

6) They actively listen to each other’s input

Another excellent quality that dream team members possess is listening carefully to what others say. Through constructive comments, feedback, experiences, and viewpoints, teamwork aids in the development of the employees' abilities and perspectives. Teamwork is a crucial tool for doing various tasks precisely and effectively. Because responsibilities are allocated relatively among all team members, there is less work to be done, which helps employees perform better without feeling pressured.

My Teamwork Story

We can use my school project as an example; We had two days to create a working model based on scientific principles. This required planning and a great extent of preparations, and if I tried to do it alone, there was a chance I would forget something. Therefore my friends and I created a group of a few people and distributed the work amongst ourselves.

Everyone completed their assigned tasks and did them correctly, following all the necessary steps. Ultimately, we achieved good results, and our team came second in the science project competition. Thus, teamwork is critical as it increases productivity and saves time. It also gives us the confidence and courage to work hard.

Rules Of Teamwork

Discipline | There is always a time restriction for a task, and when working in a team, you should be mindful of the time and accomplish your assignment appropriately. Proper Goal: The team captain makes sure that everyone on the team is aware of what the project entails. What exactly do they need to do? And what else are they able to change? All these factors will drive other people's thoughts in the appropriate direction. Without clarity, a team can devise new solutions or approaches to finish a task.

My Story Of Teamwork

In the inter-school football tournament, our team was in the final. But unfortunately, we were two goals down. Only 15 minutes were remaining. We knew we cannot make it if we don't unite amongst ourselves for these last few minutes. We had a quick team talk during the drinks break and decided to give it all and communicate among ourselves. In the 83rd minute, we scored one goal, and it was 2-1. We pushed hard, and the entire team gave everything they had in their arsenal. We knew at this point individual brilliance won't work.

We needed team effort. Finally, in the 89th minute, we scored another and equalised it to 2-2! We were so happy and pumped up at the same time. We scored another goal in the extra time and made it 3-2 for us. We eventually won the tournament and realised that teamwork is the ultimate key to success and victory.

Specific abilities are required for a project to be successful or for a task to be completed. The most crucial factor is teamwork; you can accomplish any of your goals if you have a fantastic team. However, even a team of highly skilled individuals cannot work effectively as a unit unless they have a strong bond based on mutual respect. If you enjoy sports, you may easily understand the value of cooperation since it takes the entire team to succeed; when they all play well, they can do anything. It takes more than one good player to win a game.

Teamwork is when a team or a group of people work together towards a common goal. Teamwork makes a task simpler and easier. Teamwork is needed among students working on an assignment together, players playing for a particular sports team as well as employees of any organisation working together to fulfil a task.

When a group of people work together, if everyone wants to do the task his way rather than listening to each other, the task will never be finished. That is why teamwork is important. When people listen to each other’s opinions, help each other and put their common goal before personal gain, they have great teamwork. Teamwork helps us achieve goals that can not be achieved alone. 

Teamwork is the combined action taken by a group of people to achieve a common goal. We cannot always work alone. Sometimes, to fulfil a larger goal, many people need to come together and take combined action.

In school, students work as a team to finish group projects. In sports, members of a team must work together if they want to win. In corporations, if every employee is only focused on his personal goals, the corporation wouldn’t be able to function. When a group of people work together, if everyone wants to do the task his way rather than listening to each other and choosing the best way, the task will never be finished. That is why teamwork is important. 

When people work as a team, they communicate with each other. They are free to express their views and opinions and others listen to them. Everyone has a duty assigned to them which they so diligently. It is their responsibility to make sure they are doing their part well or else the entire team will stop functioning well.

When a team has a good leader who is capable of encouraging, motivating, guiding and helping others in the team, teamwork becomes much easier. With good teamwork, a huge task may be finished in no time. Teamwork helps us achieve big goals which cannot be achieved individually.

Not all tasks can be done by a single person. Sometimes, to fulfil a larger goal, many people need to come together and take combined action. In school, students need to work together with their classmates to finish a group project. In sports, be it cricket, football or hockey, all the members of a certain team must work together and support each other in order to win a match.

No organisation can function without teamwork. If every employee is only focused on his personal goals and gains, the corporation wouldn’t be able to finish any of its projects. At home, if family members don’t understand and help each other, it will cause unnecessary issues and create tension.

We can see examples of teamwork even in the wild. Many animals display teamwork by hunting together as a group. While some members of the group distract the prey, others surround it, jump on it and kill it. Many wild animals also stay together to protect themselves and each other from danger as well as to raise their young. 

When we look at large organisations, all the work there is divided and given to different departments. Even in those departments, hundreds of people do different work which is assigned to them by the head. Only when everyone is doing their work well, a department can finish the work assigned to them and in turn, the organisation can flourish. If any one department stops functioning, all other departments have to stop and wait as well.

It is not quite easy to keep working hard, matching the pace of everyone else. One can often get demotivated and slow down. That is why a good leader is very important in every team. A good leader is one who is capable of encouraging, motivating, guiding and helping others in the team. He makes working as a team easier. 

It is very important for children to learn teamwork as it will help them throughout their lives. Teamwork also teaches about discipline and responsibility. When people work as a team, they communicate with each other about their problems. They are allowed to freely express their views and opinions and the other members listen to them.

Everyone has a duty assigned to them which they do very diligently. It is their responsibility to make sure they are doing their part well so that the team can keep functioning smoothly. With good teamwork, a huge task may be finished in no time. Teamwork helps us grow in every field of life and is the key to our success.

Training Techniques for Enhanced Teamwork in the Workplace

“Ability to work on a team.”  “Commitment to teamwork.”  “Works well with a team.”

You’ve probably seen (or written) these common phrases in job descriptions. Whether the work is full- or part-time, remote or onsite, organizations expect employees to work on teams. And many employees want to work on teams.

An Indeed post on teamwork and collaboration notes that “teamwork in the workplace is a group's ability to work together effectively, communicate well, define roles and leadership, share resources, and actively listen to each other.”

The benefits of teamwork are well established, according to the post’s authors. “Collaborative teamwork can promote innovation, increase job satisfaction, find solutions to resolve problems, and develop excellent soft skills.”

Organizations that rely on teams may see more creative thinking, productivity, and efficiency. 

Well-functioning teams build on individual strengths to create something greater. According to Gallup , “Individuals who know their strengths work together to form better partnerships, and more thoughtful partnerships create stronger teams.”

As employees leverage their strengths on a team, team members learn more about each other, and “when team members value each other's strengths, they more effectively relate to one another, avoid potential conflicts, boost group cohesion, and create positive dialogue.”  

The result, according to Gallup? “The strengths and dynamics of your team directly affect business outcomes.”

Common Team Challenges

But what happens when teams are ill-defined or ineffective, not communicating or sharing resources, or not actively listening to each other? 

You probably know that what organizations say about teamwork and what happens in the workplace can…differ. Any group of individuals will have challenges, and common teamwork challenges can derail projects, create conflict, and ultimately affect organizational culture. 

Jamie Birt, a Career Coach with Indeed, identified fourteen common teamwork challenges . Let’s look at a few: 

Lack of clarity . If individuals don’t understand what they’re supposed to be doing—or why—the team won’t function well. Lack of clarity means that people won’t know what you want. And if they don’t know what you want, they won’t be able to deliver it—or will deliver results that send projects off course. Clear expectations help everyone move in the same direction.

Poor communication . Even the best communicators fall flat sometimes. Withholding key information, sloppy record-keeping, refusing to accept feedback, and ignoring good suggestions can all lead to dysfunctional teams. Teammates may have different communication styles. Teams may have problems with other teams. And poor communication from managers can impact how a team functions.

Lack of trust . Lack of clarity and poor communication can lead to a lack of trust, which complicates and compounds team problems. Trust is a key feature of well-functioning teams, and when it doesn’t exist, team members are less likely to ask for help, slowing the team down and dampening innovation and creative problem-solving.  

Personality conflicts and competition . Birt notes that conflict can lead to  “situations in which two employees…disagree,” resulting in “decreased morale or poor cooperation.” And while competition isn’t bad, if it becomes the main focus or a means to undermine teammates, it can throw the entire team off balance. Internal competition can exacerbate other challenges like communication, trust, and clarity, making what could have been small problems much worse. 

Lack of engagement . All of these challenges can result in a general lack of engagement. If individuals don’t feel connected to each other, their work, or the team, they won’t give their best. Productivity and quality suffer, and everyone loses “focus and enthusiasm,” which can make the challenges listed above worse. 

What Makes Teams Work? 

These challenges are common, but your organization doesn’t have to settle for poor-functioning teams. Instead of focusing on the challenges, learning what others do well can help you drive a team toward health, effectiveness, and cohesion.

Well-functioning, resilient teams have several things in common:  

Psychological safety . Ferrazzi, Race, and Vincent list candor as the first of four qualities of a resilient team . They note that teams need “open, honest dialogue and feedback with each other” to function well.

That kind of honesty comes from a feeling of psychological safety , which Amy Gallo defines as “a shared belief held by members of a team that it’s OK to take risks, to express their ideas and concerns, to speak up with questions, and to admit mistakes—all without fear of negative consequences.”  

In an interview with Think Fast, Act Small , Sara Singer notes that psychological safety isn’t just up to teams, but that “it is a critical concept…for the people who lead them,” a perspective shared by Dori Meinert in an article on improving teamwork , who says managers “must create a psychologically safe space so that team members feel it’s safe to speak their minds.”

Emotional loyalty . A key feature of resilient and well-connected teams is what Gallup calls emotional loyalty. This feature indicates a deep connection to the team and the individuals on it, or teammates who “truly care for each other and share both success and failure,” according to Ferrazzi, Race, and Vincent. Creating an organizational culture of psychological safety and treating staff as humans can help create the conditions for emotional loyalty to flourish, resulting in teams that can build great things together—and lean on each other when faced with challenges and setbacks.

Willingness to learn . Ferrazzi, Race, and Vincent round out their list of key characteristics of resilient teams with resourcefulness and humility. To develop both, teammates must be willing to learn from each other. Individuals may need to ask for help, admit when they don’t know something, and pull together in new ways. Singer says that learning-oriented teams “learn from mistakes and experimentation so they can adapt and change and innovate” but that this can only come about when leadership creates a culture of training that includes “practices and processes that promote training, knowledge acquisition [and] performance monitoring.”

Which leads us to training. 🙂

Design Effective Training 

Moving a team past common challenges and into resilience can feel overwhelming. It takes work, but the good news from Indeed is that “teamwork is a set of learned skills.” 

Teams don’t magically form and, once formed, don’t magically operate as effective and cohesive units. It takes time, strategy, and effort, but it can be done. Teaching individuals how to work on a team, teaching teams how to work together, and teaching management how to lead teams effectively can all be done with training—showing teams how to “engage with each other more and do better on tasks,” according to a piece on making teamwork training work by Iulia Alina Cioca.

Talk with the team . Marjorie Dervin’s piece on effective performance management for teams points out that “behaviors that make a team successful vary, based on the purpose of the team.” So, before you launch into delivering training you think a team needs, check in with them.

Indeed’s article on training types and tips recommends you “use your team's input to determine training needs,” and we agree. Talking with team members can help you decide if you need to start with group training, focus on individual training, or devise a plan that addresses both. You may have a sense of what kind of training each team needs, but taking time to talk about their challenges and successes makes teams more likely to adopt training with an open mind.

Set training goals . Gallup notes that “managers should not assume that employees always know how to accomplish their goals.” So, be specific about what you want to achieve with training. “Completing training” isn’t a goal. Instead, consider the behavioral shifts you want to see in the workplace. Do leaders need to understand better how to solicit feedback? Do teams need to learn how to be more culturally competent? Once you understand—and communicate—goals, you can design or deploy training to help teams meet them. 

Identify relevant training topics . After you identify training goals, you can match them to training topics. Maybe your team needs customer service communication skills like answering the phone or sending professional emails. Or perhaps safety training will help them look out for each other at work. Topics like cultural competency can help diverse teams work better together. And training on speaking up at work can increase psychological safety.

Focus on the big picture . Here at Niche Academy, one of the things our managers always ask is if we understand how our work fits into the larger mission of the organization. They make a habit of connecting small goals to larger initiatives, which helps create a work culture where people feel like what they do matters. Adult learners want to know how learning impacts what they can do. So, take the time to connect training to the big picture so people feel more invested in it.

Include leaders and managers . Training managers and leaders can have a bigger impact than training individual members. Leaders have a profound effect on how teams function. In many ways, they set the tone for how the team manages communication, challenges, and conflict. Ferrazzi, Race, and Vincent note that “leaders must assess the state of their teams, identify weak spots, and then deliver strategies to help team members break down barriers and build foundations of trust, transparency, and self-awareness.” Establishing a training pathway for leaders can help them learn effective communication, conflict resolution, how to establish explicit expectations and more. 

Key Questions to Ask About Training 

Once you have a sense of what training should include, you’ll want to think about specifics like: 

Where will training come from? Finding or developing quality content is your first step. You may want to develop training from scratch, to customize it to your organization, workflows, or policies. If that’s not an option, finding a library of professionally developed courses you can easily embed into your LMS might be the solution. 

How will it be offered? Once you have content, you’ll want to consider the best way to deliver it to employees. Depending on your team's needs, in-person, online, and hybrid methods are all options. Synchronous sessions allow for real-time collaboration. Asynchronous sessions allow employees to learn when it’s convenient for them.

Can training be customized for individuals and teams? However you deliver training, remember that one size doesn’t fit all. Forcing employees to sit through training they don’t need guarantees disengagement. On the other hand, neglecting core training can slow growth and productivity. Some teams may need learning pathways that break down complicated topics or processes. Others might benefit from training on targeted tasks or skills. 

How will you track completion? Team training is an investment, and it’s worth thinking through how to confirm employees complete training. In some industries, compliance rules may require some evidence of completion. Being able to track attendance, time in online courses, and completion of a course provides valuable data for your organization.  How will you measure learning? Completing training is one thing—learning is another. Incorporating assessments into training is key to measuring learner success. Activities, reflection questions, case studies, and scenarios allow learners to practice new skills in a low-stakes environment. And assessments give you powerful data about whether the training will impact teamwork.

How will you demonstrate a return on investment? When you invest in training, you want to know that it works. Reports on participation and learning outcomes can help you tell a compelling story about how many staff you reached and what they did with the content.

Enhance Teamwork With Training Today

Teamwork takes time, focus, and communication. But it can be taught. Training your team for resiliency is key to driving your organization forward. 

Investing in teamwork requires training individuals, managers, team leaders, and the team as a whole. It takes commitment, but the benefits—long-term collaboration, innovation, and success—are worth the effort.

SEL Could Move Into School Sports. What That Might Look Like

Imagine you’re a student-athlete just starting out in a team sport. Your opponent is winning, the spectators are loud, there are only a few minutes left, and you’re feeling a lot of pressure. Your coach calls out from the sidelines: “Focus out there!” But you’ve never learned how to effectively block those outside pressures.

That’s where a social-emotional-learning curriculum that helps students self-regulate and manage stress would be useful for students and coaches, said Mitch Lyons, the founder of a handful of nonprofit organizations that advocate for social-emotional learning and cultivating supportive environments in school athletics.

The Massachusetts state legislature is considering a bill that would require its education department to publish guidelines for a social-emotional-learning curriculum in middle and high school athletic programs.

Lyons brought that issue to the attention of state Senate Majority Leader Cynthia Creem and worked with the Democrat’s office to write the bill, according to Lyons and Creem’s office. He was inspired to champion incorporating SEL into K-12 athletics after seeing what he described as coaching behavior that was abusive.

“That’s when I started looking at, why is this happening in sports?” said Lyons, who lives in Massachusetts. “There was no main message in the athletic department. There’s no, ‘This is something we will be teaching on all teams.’ It’s every coach [doing their own thing].”

With sports, SEL happens ‘in real time’

Sports is a great place to practice social-emotional-learning skills, according to experts. Young people learn skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience while playing sports.

“It’s happening in real time,” said Megan Bartlett, the founder of the national nonprofit Center for Healing and Justice Through Sport. “In a sports environment, you’re having real-life interactions with other people, you’re having stressful things happen that cause you to need to practice regulating your emotions.

“And you can get coaching on it in real time,” Bartlett added.

If a student-athlete feels like an opponent bumped into them too hard or doesn’t like what’s happening during the game, a coach can intervene and help the athlete regulate their emotions.

While those skills are often taught implicitly, students should also be taught SEL skills explicitly the same way sports-specific skills—such as how to pass a basketball or how to do a butterfly stroke—are taught, Lyons said.

Andrew Tucker, the director of policy for the nonprofit Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, or CASEL, agreed that explicit teaching is “proven to be effective in building these types of environments where students can grow and learn new skills.” CASEL has been a major force in promoting the adoption of SEL state standards and promoting research-based SEL instruction.

But explicit teaching doesn’t mean that the student-athletes have to sit and listen to a lesson like they’re in the classroom, Tucker said. It’s all about incorporating these skills in the context of the sport.

“There are all kinds of teachable moments in sports,” he said. “You lose a game, you’re really down on it. How do you as a coach lift your team back up? Do you teach them that this is one game, that these emotions you’re feeling are valid? What are you feeling, and why are you feeling that way? How can we get you to a place where you’re feeling OK?”

Coaches need more training

However, coaches often don’t have the resources they need to teach their student-athletes the necessary social-emotional skills to overcome obstacles they might face in competitions and in life, according to experts.

“I think it’s mostly that it just has never been the expectation,” Bartlett said. “The expectation is if you do need training, it’s in tactics for your sport. It’s how to become the smartest basketball mind, not the best developer of young people.”

Often, coaches are volunteers and not paid well, if at all, so they don’t want to add more to their plates, said Hannah Olson, the director of the Center for Leadership in Athletics at the University of Washington, a research center focused on improving leadership and management practices in athletics.

It could also be that, in the past, teachers were almost always the ones coaching, and “the expectation is that a teacher would know those fundamental things,” Bartlett said.

Liz MacLachlan , a high school physics teacher and cross-country coach in Providence, R.I., agreed that for her, incorporating SEL in coaching “comes easier to me with my understanding and training in the classroom.”

“I think everyone kind of knows what we want coaches to be doing, but actually the work of implementing it is a skill,” MacLachlan said. “It’s not easy and obvious how to create [safe, supportive environments]. It takes understanding what you want, verbalizing it clearly, and then in the moments where it’s challenged, being able to turn to kids and say, ‘This is not the environment we’re creating.’”

‘Positive’ development

The Massachusetts bill specifies that an SEL curriculum in middle and high school athletics should explicitly teach students and coaches how to:

  • Create a safe, supportive, and bias-free team culture;
  • Provide students with age-appropriate leadership roles;
  • Formulate lessons and guidance that address hate, bias, and negative behaviors;
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with others; and
  • Develop other skills that would assist them in overcoming physical, social, and emotional obstacles in athletic competition and in their lives.

The bill does not mandate that school districts adopt an SEL curriculum for athletics. Instead, it would require that the state set guidelines for districts if they choose to incorporate it.

“For a hundred years or more, we’ve thought of youth athletics as a way to impart values and skills like hard work, determination, cooperation, problem-solving, and emotion management, but we don’t have any curriculum in place to ensure that our teams live up to that purpose,” Creem said in an email to Education Week.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, which governs school athletics in the state, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the bill, which is set for a public hearing in early May.

Other state legislatures are also looking to address these issues in youth sports. In New Jersey, three assembly members introduced a bill that would establish a task force to examine issues and make recommendations concerning youth sports, including abusive coaching, confrontational parents, and bullying of players. Utah lawmakers passed a joint resolution that condemns abusive coaching practices and calls on schools to provide safe and supportive environments for student-athletes. Although these deal with social-emotional-learning concepts, they don’t mention SEL by name.

“Any move toward finding a way to provide coaches with more education and opportunities to learn is really positive,” Olson said. “I think they’re moving in the right direction.”

At a time when most teachers are feeling stressed and overwhelmed in their jobs, we asked 2,531 public K-12 teachers this open-ended question:

If there’s one thing you’d want the public to know about teachers, what would it be?

We also asked Americans what they think about teachers to compare with teachers’ perceptions of how the public views them.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand what public K-12 teachers would like Americans to know about their profession. We also wanted to learn how the public thinks about teachers.

For the open-end question, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers surveyed are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public K-12 school teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

Overall, 96% of surveyed teachers provided an answer to the open-ended question. Center researchers developed a coding scheme categorizing the responses, coded all responses, and then grouped them into the six themes explored in the data essay.

For the questions for the general public, we surveyed 5,029 U.S. adults from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16, 2023. The adults surveyed are members of the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, a nationally representative online survey panel. Panel members are randomly recruited through probability-based sampling, and households are provided with access to the Internet and hardware if needed. To ensure that the results of this survey reflect a balanced cross section of the nation, the data is weighted to match the U.S. adult population by gender, age, education, race and ethnicity and other categories.

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, the teacher survey methodology and the general public survey methodology .

Most of the responses to the open-ended question fell into one of these six themes:

Teaching is a hard job

About half of teachers (51%) said they want the public to know that teaching is a difficult job and that teachers are hardworking. Within this share, many mentioned that they have roles and responsibilities in the classroom besides teaching, which makes the job stressful. Many also talked about working long hours, beyond those they’re contracted for.

“Teachers serve multiple roles other than being responsible for teaching curriculum. We are counselors, behavioral specialists and parents for students who need us to fill those roles. We sacrifice a lot to give all of ourselves to the role as teacher.”

“The amount of extra hours that teachers have to put in beyond the contractual time is ridiculous. Arriving 30 minutes before and leaving an hour after is just the tip of the iceberg. … And as far as ‘having summers off,’ most of August is taken up with preparing materials for the upcoming school year or attending three, four, seven days’ worth of unpaid development training.”

Teachers care about their students

The next most common theme: 22% of teachers brought up how fulfilling teaching is and how much teachers care about their students. Many gave examples of the hardships of teaching but reaffirmed that they do their job because they love the kids and helping them succeed.

“We are in it for the kids, and the most incredible moments are when children make connections with learning.”

Teachers are undervalued and disrespected

Some 17% of teachers want the public to know that they feel undervalued and disrespected, and that they need more public support. Some mentioned that they are well-educated professionals but are not treated as such. And many teachers in this category responded with a general plea for support from the public, which they don’t feel they’re getting now.

“We feel undervalued. The public and many parents of my students treat me and my peers as if we do not know as much as they do, as if we are uneducated.”

“The public attitudes toward teachers have been degrading, and it is making it impossible for well-qualified teachers to be found. People are simply not wanting to go into the profession because of public sentiments.”

Teachers are underpaid

A similar share of teachers (15%) want the public to know that teachers are underpaid. Many teachers said their salary doesn’t account for the effort and care they put into their students’ education and believe that their pay should reflect this.

“We are sorely underpaid for the amount of hours we work and the education level we have attained.”

Teachers need support and resources from government and administrators

About one-in-ten teachers (9%) said they need more support from the government, their administrators and other key stakeholders. Many mentioned working in understaffed schools, not having enough funding and paying for supplies out of pocket. Some teachers also expressed that they have little control over the curriculum that they teach.

“The world-class education we used to be proud of does not exist because of all the red tape we are constantly navigating. If you want to see real change in the classroom, advocate for smaller class sizes for your child, push your district to cap class sizes at a reasonable level and have real, authentic conversations with your child’s teacher about what is going on in the classroom if you’re curious.”

Teachers need more support from parents

Roughly the same share of teachers (8%) want the public to know that teachers need more support from parents, emphasizing that the parent-teacher relationship is strained. Many view parents as partners in their child’s education and believe that a strong relationship improves kids’ overall social and emotional development.

“Teachers help students to reach their potential. However, that job is near impossible if parents/guardians do not take an active part in their student’s education.”

How the U.S. public views teachers

While the top response from teachers in the open-ended question is that they want the public to know that teaching is a hard job, most Americans already see it that way. Two-thirds of U.S. adults say being a public K-12 teacher is harder than most other jobs, with 33% saying it’s a lot harder.

And about three-quarters of Americans (74%) say teachers should be paid more than they are now, including 39% who say teachers should be paid a lot more.

Americans are about evenly divided on whether the public generally looks up to (32%) or down on (30%) public K-12 teachers. Some 37% say Americans neither look up to or down on public K-12 teachers.

In addition to the open-ended question about what they want the public to know about them, we asked teachers how much they think most Americans trust public K-12 teachers to do their job well. We also asked the public how much they trust teachers. Answers differ considerably.

Nearly half of public K-12 teachers (47%) say most Americans don’t trust teachers much or at all. A third say most Americans trust teachers some, and 18% say the public trusts teachers a great deal or a fair amount.

In contrast, a majority of Americans (57%) say they do trust public K-12 teachers to do their job well a great deal or a fair amount. About a quarter (26%) say they trust teachers some, and 17% say they don’t trust teachers much or at all.

How the public’s views differ by party

There are sizable party differences in Americans’ views of teachers. In particular, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are more likely than Republicans and Republican leaners to say:

  • They trust teachers to do their job well a great deal or a fair amount (70% vs. 44%)
  • Teaching is a lot or somewhat harder when compared with most other jobs (77% vs. 59%)
  • Teachers should be paid a lot or somewhat more than they are now (86% vs. 63%)

Gen Z Wanted a Scrabble More Conducive to Hanging Out. Mattel Was Happy to Oblige.

The release of Scrabble Together in Europe this week marks the first time that the game’s rules have changed since it was patented in 1948. While Mattel owns the rights to the game in much of the world, Hasbro owns the rights to Scrabble in the United States and has no plans at this time to expand the game.

In the new version, a double-sided board offers the traditional game on one side and Together mode on the other. Instead of competing to see who can score the most points and show off their knowledge of obscure two-letter words, Scrabble Together encourages working with friends to conquer predetermined challenges. Players win Scrabble Together when they complete 20 challenges. If players have used up all the helper cards and cannot complete a goal, they must concede.

The idea behind Together mode was to make the game more interactive and inclusive, said Ray Adler, vice president and global head of games at Mattel. Research conducted by the company revealed that competition was not as important to younger players as having a way to connect with others and have fun. The new version prioritizes teamwork in order to adapt to those changing values.

“Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players,” Mr. Adler said in a statement. “For anyone who’s ever thought ‘word games aren’t for me’ or felt a little intimidated by the classic game, Scrabble Together mode is an ideal option.”

Mr. Adler made it clear in an interview with The New York Times that the classic version was not going anywhere. “We’re not changing original Scrabble,” he said. “This is just an additive to it that if you don’t like it, you know, don’t play it. We just hope it will bring more people into the game.”

“Most people who don’t play original Scrabble think that it’s a game that you need a very extensive vocabulary for,” he added in the interview with The Times.

“What you really need to know is how you can use words regionally to move around the board and score more points than your opponent,” he continued. “It’s really a strategy game.”

Scrabble Together is a faster game that also may be more engaging. “Some of the feedback that we got on Scrabble in particular was that you’ve got to focus a lot,” Mr. Adler said. Games with more players take longer, he added, but when everyone is working as a team, everybody is engaged on every turn.

“The most fun games are the games where everybody’s talking after every turn and everybody’s commenting and everybody’s engaged,” Mr. Adler said. “And I think that’s what this is going to provide.” He said that the game play in Together mode might also function as a way to teach new players the mechanics of playing the Classic version, so that they might feel more comfortable playing the original version.

Not everyone is convinced. Over on X, formerly known as Twitter, a few players have referred to the new version as “ woke Scrabble ,” but one competitive player, Trip Payne of Woodland Hills, Calif., says he believes that people are being too hard on Mattel.

“I’ve already commented to a few friends how I expect some Scrabble people to sneer at it, which they have, disappointingly,” he said. “For now, I’ll just say that I see nothing wrong with allowing non-word people to have more fun with the game.”

“I just wish more people could subscribe to my ‘everything ain’t for everybody’ philosophy,” Mr. Payne added.

The game that players would eventually know as Scrabble dates to 1938, when Alfred Mosher Butts, an American architect, invented a game that went by different names, including Lexiko. The game received the Scrabble title and trademark 10 years later

Today, Scrabble is produced in 28 languages. More than 165 million games have been sold in 120 countries since 1948, according to Mattel.
