I would advise all pharmacy students to get involved in pharmacy organizations. There are many ways you can grow as a student pharmacist, such as through making connections, growing in leadership, and showing your dedication to the profession of pharmacy. I was able to meet many upperclassmen in pharmacy who serve as role models for me, and I learned a lot from working alongside them in my organizations.

Experiential Learning in Online Pharmacy School

What is experiential learning.

Experiential learning is the practice component of the University of Findlay’s Distance PharmD program, where you participate in interactive learning experiences under the supervision of a PharmD preceptor in your community to develop and refine practical pharmacy competencies.

What are Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE)?

During the program's first three years, you will complete 300 hours (100 each year) of supervised and structured training in a clinical setting with a licensed pharmacist. These guided experiences follow standard U.S. practice models and help you gain confidence while building practical pharmaceutical and patient-focused communication skills.

What are Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)?

In the program's final year, you will complete at least 1,440 advanced, experiential-based learning hours. An assigned preceptor directs these experiences at a designated site near you. A minimum of 160 hours must be completed in each of the ACPE-required APPE areas, including community practice, ambulatory patient care, hospital/health system pharmacy, and inpatient general medicine. The remaining hours include specialty and elective areas.

Where will my experiential learning rotations take place?

Findlay’s placement team helps you find experiential learning sites and preceptors within driving distance of your residence. The practical experience you’ll gain during your IPPE and APPE hours complements classroom learning and prepares you to develop and refine practical pharmacy competencies.

How do I benefit from Findlay’s experiential learning support services?

Finding preceptors and sites near you for your experiential learning rotations can be time-consuming. We manage the logistics of this process so that you can focus on your education and the competencies you need to become an accomplished pharmacist.

Yes, most of our students are employed; however, we encourage you to speak with your employer before starting the program. In some cases, you may be able to complete your rotations at your workplace, provided the employer can offer an experience that aligns with the educational needs of the program and there are no conflicts of interest. Students may not be paid for any rotation hours.

How long are rotations?

Students must perform 30 weeks or 1200 hours of advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) rotations. In other words, students complete five rotations each six weeks in length, 240 hours per rotation. All rotations are typically full-time eight-hour days. Students should speak to their employer well in advance to ensure full support is provided. Part-time rotations outside of Colorado may be available with the full cooperation of the site and preceptor.

FINDING AN ONLINE PH.D. IN PHARMACOLOGY

Working full-time and balancing an education isn’t easy, especially if you also have family and other scheduling commitments. You may not be able to make a traditional class schedule fit around your existing schedule, and that’s why online Ph.D.s’ in Pharmacology are so helpful. These degree programs allow you to study mostly in the comfort of your own home. You can often log in at whatever times are convenient for you, making it much easier to balance your schoolwork with your schedule. Because pharmacology degrees are offered only by some universities and colleges, the ability to study online can make your Ph.D. much more accessible than it would be otherwise.

The 4 Best Online Ph.D.s’ in Pharmacology primarily consists of online coursework. However, because most of these programs require experiential training and labwork components, some travel to campus may be required. Travel is minimal and condensed to intensive sessions which often take place during the summer, but be sure to consider the cost and commitment of these on-campus sessions when deciding whether a program is right for your needs. You should also familiarize yourself with how the coursework is provided online, including whether sessions are synchronous, asynchronous, or both. These programs are all created for students who are working professionals, so they offer the flexibility that most adult learners require.

RANKING THE 4 TOP ONLINE PH.D.S’ IN PHARMACOLOGY

While you’re on your way to earning your Ph.D. or Doctorate within your field, the editors at Online PhD Programs are already practicing doctors of their craft: ranking the best online Ph.D. programs. To be featured on our annual rankings online doctorates must satisfy four coinciding requirements: accreditation, research and scholarship doctorate certification, NSF recognition, and institutional association with peer-reviewed academia.

Each degree is then ranked using the information provided – primarily – through the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook . The data collected is scored through a series of weighted categories to represent seven crucial aspects of what makes an online doctorate valuable to future students. Online program quality and presence are joined by industry salaries, student reviews, degree exclusivity, costs, and completion rates to determine the best online doctorates available. #1. CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY

Creighton University is home to one of the top pharmacy programs in the country and offers two pathways that lead to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree . Students may pursue an on-campus entry-level pathway, but the university also offers an accredited Distance Pathway that allows students to study online. This Distance Pathway was first introduced in 2001, and its innovative design means that distance students cover the same material that on-campus students study. Through the Distance Pathway, students interact with faculty through web conferencing, discussion boards, email, phone, and more. Some of the didactic portions of the degree take place via synchronous/live sessions, and students attend two- to four-week on-campus sessions during the summer to complete laboratory courses. Additionally, students complete eight five-week clinical rotations, and clinical rotation sites are offered in several locations throughout the country and internationally to accommodate distance learning students.

The U.S. News & World Report ranked Creighton as the #3 private pharmacy school in the United States. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, the School of Pharmacy was founded in 1905 and has since then become an innovator in education and distance learning opportunities. Creighton offers a quality education rooted in the Jesuit tradition, and a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio means that faculty can support and interact with students. Even better, Creighton’s 3:1 student-to-faculty clinical ratio means that students receive plenty of individualized attention in clinical settings. Format: Online

#2. UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER

The University of Colorado Denver offers an online Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program with two pathways – one for North American Trained students, and one for international students. The North American-Trained PharmD Program is designed for working pharmacists licensed within the United States or Canada. Students participate in didactic courses offered online. The program also requires experiential training, and students often meet this requirement with a combination of live rotations and with credit that they may receive from previous work. This program does not require students to visit the campus, making it ideal for students living throughout the United States. Alternatively, the International-Trained PharmD Program is intended for pharmacists licensed outside of the United States. While the program is mostly distance-based, it does require students to travel to campus periodically. Students must complete their experiential training through rotations within the United States.

CU Denver offers over 100 academic degrees including 52 master’s and 13 doctoral degrees, as well as many certificate programs. Students at CU Denver participate in more than 700 internships every year, and of the more than 94,000 alumni, two-thirds of them remain in Colorado. The CU Anschutz Medical Campus is located in Aurora and offers over 40 different degree programs through its six schools and colleges including the School of Medicine and College of Nursing. Today, the Medical Campus serves 4,500 students each year. In the fiscal year of 2018, the Medical Campus received $500 million in research awards, resulting in a $5.8 billion economic impact on the state of Colorado. Format: Online

#3. HOWARD UNIVERSITY

At Howard University, practicing pharmacists can enroll in a Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) program . This unique and innovative program allows students to take courses online at a pace that works for them. Thanks to a fast track option, students may complete the program in just two years, compared to the four or five years that traditional programs often require. Only two campus visits are required during the program, and the cost of this degree is competitive when compared to other non-traditional pharmacy programs. Faculty and students interact through the internet, and students are admitted once each fall in cohorts, allowing them to progress through the program in a supportive cohort.

Located in Washington, DC, Howard University was founded in 1876. Today, this research university consists of 13 schools and colleges offering over 120 fields of study. The university is home to over 9,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students hailing from all 50 states and 66 countries. The Howard University Hospital, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and Nursing and Allied Health Sciences make up the Howard University Health Sciences division and give students valuable hands-on experience. The university also leads in STEM education, since the National Science Foundation recognized Howard University as being the top producer of African-American undergraduates who then pursue and attain doctoral degrees in science and engineering.

Doctoral Student: The University of Florida College of pharmacy has been one of the most challenging, but rewarding experiences I have had. The school fosters excellence and this is proven through its high ranking in national research funding and residency program matching, among other accomplishments. While living in Florida is not the most welcoming as it applies to minority representation and diversity, I know that I am getting the highest quality of education there is. Regardless of the external noise, as a minority student, I am aware of my worth and am confident that I can display myself as an efficient individual within the profession and in society. ... Requirements.

The admissions requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy program encompass a comprehensive evaluation of candidates’ qualifications and experiences.

All applicants to the Doctor of Pharmacy online pathway must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or the international equivalent prior to enrollment. See the Application Requirements section for more information.

All applicants to the Doctor of Pharmacy must successful complete the nine math and science pre-requisite courses listed below:

Unlike many other graduate programs, Butler University does not require applicants to submit GRE, GMAT, or any other entrance exams as part of the admissions process. Instead, the university focuses on a holistic evaluation of candidates, considering their academic records, professional achievements, letters of recommendation, and personal statements. This policy ensures that individuals with various career trajectories and educational backgrounds have an equal opportunity to pursue a graduate degree at Butler, promoting a more inclusive and diverse cohort of students.

Your Personal Essay should address why you selected pharmacy as a career and how the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to your immediate and long-term professional goals. Describe how your personal, educational, and professional background will help you achieve your goals. The personal essay is an important part of your application for admission and provides you with an opportunity to clearly and effectively express your ideas.

Do not personalize your essay for a particular pharmacy degree institution. You cannot make any edits to your personal essay after you have e-submitted your completed application to PharmCAS.

Butler recommends you use the PharmCAS required personal statement as a way to give the Admission Committee a chance to get to know you better as an individual, which could include challenges you have faced as well as accomplishments outside of your academic record.

Butler’s PharmD supplementary questions:

  • How did you learn about Butler’s PharmD degree?
  • What concentrations, second majors, or minors did you complete or seriously pursue during your undergraduate academic career? When listing these, please indicate if it was or will be completed prior to the start of the PharmD program.
  • Is there anything about you that the Admission Committee should know that is not covered in any other section of your application?

To complete their application for the Doctor of Pharmacy, prospective candidates are required to provide official transcripts from all prior educational institutions and submit a current resume. These documents are essential components of the admissions process, as they offer valuable insights into an applicant’s academic background and professional experiences

We built hands-on experience into our online Doctor of Pharmacy courses in the form of live debates, presentations, and breakout group discussions with fellow peers. Our small class sizes emphasize collaboration and allow for more personalized learning through asynchronous and synchronous formats.

For many people, medication is an important part of life. Medicines are used to heal diseases, reduce pain, and improve chronic conditions.

As a pharmacist, you could play an essential role in helping people get the medication they need. To do so, it’s necessary to earn your doctorate in pharmacy, also known as a Pharm.D. Students often enter a pharmacy program with a robust science background. It’s common for students to have a bachelor’s degree in a science field, such as biology.

Some PharmD programs accept students with just 2 to 3 years of undergraduate work, but that requires special transfer arrangements. Before you can enter a PharmD program, you may be required to pass an entrance exam. The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) shows your readiness for doctoral studies in this field.

The accrediting body for pharmacy training programs is the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). It’s beneficial to enroll in a pharmacy training program that’s accredited by this organization.

Since a Doctor of Pharmacy provides in-depth training for aspiring pharmacists, students can learn about:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biostatistics
  • Business management
  • Drug interactions
  • Healthcare system
  • Immunizations
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Professional pathways

It is also important to gain hands-on experience in this field. You will likely complete lab work and engage in practicums during your program.

After graduation, you might complete a longer internship as well, especially if you want to specialize. The full requirements may depend on the licensing rules in the state where you intend to practice. Before you can become a licensed pharmacist, it’s also necessary to pass qualifying exams that are administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).

The tests are the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). Once you meet your state’s requirements, you can qualify to become licensed as a pharmacist. Some professionals work for a drugstore or a hospital. There are also jobs for pharmacists in drug development, pharmaceutical sales, health informatics, and education.

Pharmacy Careers & Salaries

Pharmacy Careers & Salaries

Working as a pharmacist is the most common job for professionals with a PharmD. Many pharmacists have jobs in retail locations. Others work in hospital pharmacies or for home-delivery medication companies.

Pharmacists have other career options available to them, too. For example, you could look for work in the field of pharmacy informatics. That job involves using medical records software to improve the process of prescribing medications or fulfilling pharmacy orders.

Some people work for pharmaceutical companies. Working as a sales representative is one possible job, and being a regulatory affairs manager is another potential line of work. Research positions could also be a possibility for people with this degree.

Some might get started as lab technicians and make their way into leadership roles. Pharmacy students study a good deal of chemistry, so roles in medicinal chemistry might be available. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , here are some potential career paths related to the field of pharmacy.

Pharmacists have a solid skill set that is useful for traditional pharmacy jobs as well as a range of other health and science roles. Medical scientist jobs may also be relevant to a pharmacy background. In particular, pharmacists may look into becoming toxicologists.

Clinical research coordinators are a type of science manager. They may oversee clinical trials for new medications. Holding a doctorate is also a key qualification for teaching courses at the college level. Some pharmacists might be interested in becoming educators who teach pharmacy principles to college students.

Writing jobs might be available as well. A pharmacist’s training could be useful when writing articles on healthcare or science topics. Pharmacists may also excel at writing grant proposals for health-related projects.

Accreditation

University offering Doctor of Pharmacy

Becoming a licensed pharmacist is a rigorous process. To meet the qualifications, it’s necessary to have a thorough education, and that means attending a regionally accredited school .

Accreditation has many benefits for students. For one, it provides assurance that you’re earning a credible degree. It may also qualify you for federal financial aid. Sometimes, regionally accredited coursework transfers between schools as well.

Plus, licensing boards usually require applicants to hold accredited degrees. Licensure is an essential step to getting hired as a pharmacist.

ACPE Accreditation

In addition to regional accreditation, it’s beneficial to also seek out accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) . This is a programmatic credential that’s given specifically to pharmacy programs.

Programmatic accreditation ensures that a degree program thoroughly prepares graduates for work in a particular industry. Accordingly, your state licensing board may require a degree from an ACPE accredited institution. ACPE evaluates pharmacy programs based on 25 standards. Both campus-based and online pharmacy doctoral programs can receive this accreditation.

Pharmacy Licensure and Certifications

People taking Pharmacy Licensure

You’re required to be licensed by your state board before you can practice as a pharmacist. If you wish to become a pharmacist, becoming licensed requires:

  • Earning an accredited PharmD
  • Passing exams
  • Completing internship hours

While your degree program may help you gain the necessary internship experience, additional hours may be required after graduation. You can also specialize as an expert in a particular branch of pharmacy practice. The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) administers board certification. The specialty options include geriatric, oncology, and pediatric pharmacy.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Doctor of Pharmacy Financial Aid

Tuition assistance programs may help you cover the costs for becoming a pharmacist. Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may help you secure loans or work-study opportunities from the federal government. Your state may have loan or grant programs as well.

Some colleges give scholarships to select students. Outside scholarship programs—for example, those offered by industry organizations—can be another valuable source of financial support. You could see if there’s employer-based aid available to you as well.

What Is a PharmD Degree?

The studies usually take about 4 years and include hands-on practice experiences. The coursework may include classes in physiology, chemistry, management, and clinical research. The practicum portions of the program may be completed in local pharmacy settings.

Many people who earn this degree go on to pursue licensure. That requires passing exams and meeting all of your state board’s prerequisites. An accredited PharmD is a key step toward fulfilling the requirements.

What Can You Do with a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree?

Medical Scientists working in the lab

With a PharmD, most graduates go on to become licensed pharmacists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists multiple work settings for pharmacists. Community pharmacists are employed in drugstores and other retail settings. Clinical pharmacists work in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

There are also jobs for pharmacists in insurance companies and drug manufacturing companies. Some pharmacists specialize in veterinary pharmacy for animals. Other potential jobs for PharmD graduates include being a pharmaceutical sales rep or a clinical researcher. Pharmaceutical informatics could be another line of work to pursue. Plus, since this is a doctoral degree, teaching college classes may be an option as well.

What Does a Doctor of Pharmacy Do?

Typically, a Doctor of Pharmacy works as a pharmacist. Pharmacists in a retail setting might fulfill medication orders and answer patients’ questions about their prescriptions. Pharmacists are experts in pharmaceuticals, and they work hard to ensure safe, accurate dosing for patients. At times, they may consult with other healthcare providers about the best drug combinations or dosing schedules.

A Doctor of Pharmacy may have other responsibilities as well. For example, professional pharmacists sometimes administer immunizations to the public. They can also perform managerial roles, coordinating pharmacy staff and overseeing expenses.

Are Pharmacists Doctors?

Two Pharmacist discussing

Pharmacists and medical doctors both work in healthcare, but they do very different jobs. Becoming a pharmacist requires earning a doctoral education. The official degree is called Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). So, yes, a pharmacist is a doctor in that regard. That’s not the same as being a medical doctor, though.

Pharmacists don’t go through med school or medical residencies. They learn to treat patients by providing medication and other pharmaceutical interventions. Unlike medical doctors, they don’t provide diagnoses or perform surgery.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Pharmacist?

Woman pursuing PharmD Online

Also, you may be able to enroll in an accelerated doctoral program. That could allow you to finish your pharmacy studies in about 3 years.

What’s the Difference Between PharmD vs. MD Programs?

For an advanced healthcare degree, you could earn a PharmD or an MD, but each will lead to a different career path. Here’s how they compare.

Both MDs and pharmacists play critical roles in healthcare.

What’s the Difference Between a PharmD vs. PhD in Pharmacy?

There are two different pharmacy doctorate programs: a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmacy. They’re distinctly different degrees, so it’s strategic to select the one that’s right for you.

A few schools offer joint PhD/PharmD programs.

What’s the Difference Between a Pharmacologist vs. Pharmacist?

You could get involved in the pharmaceutical industry as a pharmacologist or a pharmacist. Here are some general differences about those roles.

In either role, you might be able to specialize in an area like cardiology or nuclear pharmacy.

Howard university.

Doctor of Pharmacy

About Howard University:

Howard University is located in Washington, D.C., and is traditional, since its inception, a nonsectarian school open to students of all races and genders.

Howard is classified as a Tier 1 national university and is placed highly on a plethora of impressive rankings reports, including U.S. News and World Report, Bloomberg Businessweek, and The Princeton Review to name a few. Howard University’s College of Pharmacy is one of the oldest and top technologically advanced online pharmacy schools in the United States.

A fun fact is that in 2011, Howard was named the second best-dress college in the nation by the Huffington Post! Another very interesting fact is that the most black doctorate recipients of any non-profit university are produced by Howard University.

Needless to say, students attending Howard, either online or on-campus, are part of a hugely successful path of others just like them working towards their career goals and dreams.

The success of their traditional on-campus program led to the development of what they coin as their Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) Program which is designed specifically for practicing pharmacists.

One of the biggest standouts of this university is that the program is designed to be completed in two years, however, a student who is admitted to the online program has a maximum of five years from the initial date of enrollment to complete the program and receive the Pharm. D. degree.

This flexibility allows for “life” to happen and for you to complete their pharmacy degrees (doctorate) program on your time. There are required visits highlighted below in the “Class Structure” section.

Campus Location: Washington, D.C.

Total Credits Required to Complete the Program: 65 credits

  • a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy
  • a valid US Pharmacy License,
  • complete the Professional Study and Supplemental Application forms, as well as, all other required documentation.
  • Applied Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacogenomics
  • Biostatistics and Biotechnology
  • Patient Assessment I & II

Class Structure:

With these pharmacy degrees, you may only enroll in the fall of each year and the curriculum is set in phases… I, II, and III. There are two times it is mandatory to make a campus visit. These are called “Executive Weekend Seminars” The first weekend is held at the very beginning of the first semester and is intended to orient the students to the hows, whens, and whys of the program.

A few weeks later, the second Executive Weekend is scheduled. Phase I is a two-month orientation that includes the first and second Executive Weekend Seminar, the second phase is a 16-month course of study divided into three semesters, and the final Phase III is a 6-week experiential component.

According to Howard’s website, “The Howard University Non-traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) program normally requires two years to complete. Pharmacists are admitted once a year as members of a cohort. Cohorts consist of not geographically bounded pharmacists who joined the program at the same time and will progress through it at the same pace.”

You can learn about drug-drug interactions, biological and chemical mechanisms of action, and potential side effects. Additionally, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degrees prepare students for careers as compassionate and professional healthcare providers.

They teach methods for counseling patients, selecting patient-specific medications, and safely dispensing medication. These programs often emphasize the importance of providing access to healthcare to diverse populations as well.

Coursework allows PharmD learners to develop the scientific knowledge and skills that are necessary to work as pharmacists. Classes usually cover topics like:

  • Biopharmaceuticals
  • Community practice
  • Drug approval process
  • Drug development
  • Healthcare communications
  • Pharmacy laws and ethics
  • Pharmacokinetics

Pharm.D. programs also include clinical rotations in healthcare environments, such as community health organizations and nursing homes. These experiences let you practice your skills as your treat actual patients under the mentorship of licensed pharmacists. Plus, rotations enable you to explore career opportunities and identify preferred positions.

Graduates are required to earn a pharmacist license and become registered pharmacists (RPh) to dispense medications. The licensing process involves several steps, including passing two examinations and submitting official transcripts to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

Licensed pharmacists can secure positions in many settings, including:

  • Assisted living facilities and nursing homes
  • Community organizations
  • Emergency rooms
  • Grocery stores
  • Intensive care units
  • Oncology centers
  • Poison control centers

Other graduates use their pharmaceutical knowledge to pursue alternative career paths. Some people become medical writers and produce content for healthcare businesses and websites.

PharmD graduates can also secure positions as pharmacologists and research scientists. These professionals use their analytical and research skills to conduct experiments, develop new medications, and identify potential side effects.

Another popular career path for people who hold this degree is a pharmaceutical sales representative. These experts educate healthcare providers about new medications and their potential benefits for patients. People with a PharmD can also work in postsecondary institutions as educators for the next generations of pharmacy students.

Pharmacy Careers and Salaries

Pharmacy Careers and Salaries

Doctor of Pharmacy degree programs prepare students for numerous careers in healthcare and other industries.

Many PharmD graduates get licensed and become practicing pharmacists. These professionals can have many specialized roles. For instance, regulatory pharmacists ensure that drugs and clinical trials comply with government regulations.

Community pharmacists work in grocery stores, health centers, and independent pharmacies and serve a diverse population of patients. Psychiatric pharmacists specialize in medications used to treat people with emotional and mental disorders.

Compounding pharmacists measure, mix, and prepare custom medications for patients, while oncology pharmacists mix and administer chemotherapy drugs. Oncology pharmacists also collaborate with physicians to ensure that cancer patients receive appropriate treatments.

Drug information pharmacists produce educational materials about medications and answer questions from patients. Meanwhile, industrial pharmacists work for pharmaceutical companies and coordinate the development and manufacturing of medications.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , here are the median salaries of potential career paths for PharmD graduates.

People with PharmDs can use their medical knowledge to secure other roles in the healthcare industry. For example, they might work as medical science liaisons, pharmacy benefits managers, and toxicologists. Additionally, some PharmDs pursue careers in academia, consulting, government regulatory affairs, health informatics, insurance, journalism, or sales.

As you may expect, Doctor of Pharmacy degree programs have more rigorous admissions criteria than undergraduate programs. Specific criteria vary among schools, but standard requirements include:

  • Online application and fee
  • Immunization records from your physician
  • Personal statement about your short-term and long-term goals as a pharmacist
  • Pharmacy College Admission Test scores (if required)
  • Prerequisite coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and other relevant subjects

Doctor of Pharmacy Programs Accreditation

pharmacist school

Accreditation is an important factor to consider as you research online pharmacy colleges. Higher education institutions must pass a strict assessment process to receive regional accreditation . This status demonstrates that a college or university provides a high-quality education on par with other accredited institutions.

Students are required to hold degrees from accredited pharmacy schools in order to take the national licensing exams. Plus, many financial assistance programs only offer aid to students at accredited institutions.

ACPE Accreditation

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) provides programmatic accreditation for Doctor of Pharmacy degree programs.

Colleges and universities are required to meet 25 quality standards established by the ACPE to earn accreditation. These standards cover many areas, including academic environments, financial resources, student services, and strategic plans.

Employers often prefer to hire graduates from ACPE accredited pharmacy schools because they know these students have received a top-notch education that’s up to industry standards.

Pharmacy Licensure and Certifications

Licensed pharmacist discussing prescription with patient

Graduates from pharmacy schools are required to get licensed before they can start working as a pharmacist.

Licensing requirements vary by state but typically involve these three steps:

  • North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) : This test covers entry-level pharmacy skills and topics. Candidates demonstrate knowledge in six areas, including developing treatment plans and performing calculations.
  • Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) : This exam evaluates knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations that govern pharmacists.
  • Work experience : Many states require aspiring pharmacists to work a specific number of hours under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

It’s beneficial to research your state’s licensing requirements as early as possible.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Online PharmD Financial Aid

What Is a PharmD?

Doctor of Pharmacy

A Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is a professional graduate degree that prepares students for careers in the pharmaceutical industry. This degree provides a comprehensive overview of drug treatments, pharmacy regulations, and interactions between drugs and diseases.

Additionally, a PharmD introduces students to cutting-edge developments in pharmaceuticals. Courses may cover innovative topics like biotechnology, health informatics, and personalized medicine. Online pharmacist programs also include experiential learning opportunities to help students hone their professional skills.

For instance, PharmD students often complete clinical rotations and internships with government agencies, hospitals, and retail pharmacies.

What Can You Do with a PharmD Degree?

pharmaceutical researchers working in a lab

A PharmD can unlock a wide array of career opportunities. Most commonly, this degree can help students qualify for positions as pharmacists. These professionals dispense medications, counsel patients, and bill insurance. Pharmacists can specialize in many areas, like immunology, oncology, and pediatrics.

Graduates can also pursue related healthcare careers. Some people work as medical educators or science writers, and they use their pharmaceutical expertise to share information about medications. Others work for pharmaceutical companies as researchers or sales representatives. These professionals usually don’t work directly with patients, but they still draw on their training to develop or promote medications.

Are Pharmacists Doctors?

Pharmacists chatting with a customer & pharmacy technician

A PharmD is a professional doctorate, so pharmacists are doctors. But, a PharmD is not equivalent to a Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Here are a few crucial differences between these degrees:

  • Education : A PharmD typically takes 4 years to complete. By contrast, an MD takes 4 to 6 years, and physicians participate in an additional residency for 5 to 8 years.
  • Responsibilities : Pharmacists dispense medications, but they don’t diagnose patients. Physicians have a wider range of duties, including developing treatment plans, monitoring symptoms, and performing surgeries.

Enrolling in a PharmD allows students to focus on pharmaceuticals.

How Long Does It Take to Get a PharmD Online?

Man taking PharmD Online

The timeline to complete a PharmD varies by program. Depending on the required number of credit hours and clinical rotations, a doctorate typically takes 3 to 5 years to complete.

Many pharmacy schools offer accelerated degrees, though. These programs allow students to earn a 3 year bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry and a 4 year PharmD. If you choose this option, you may complete both degrees in 7 years instead of the traditional 8. Some online pharmacy colleges allow students to enroll part-time, extending the length of the program.

What’s the Difference Between Pharmacology vs. Pharmacy Doctorate Programs?

Like a PharmD, a doctorate in pharmacology enables students to develop expertise in pharmaceuticals. But these degrees have several differences.

If you want to work directly with patients, a PharmD will prepare you to work in clinical settings. By contrast, a doctorate in pharmacology can help qualify you for a research-based career.

Is a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Worth It?

Pharmacist providing prescribed meds to an elderly customer

Yes, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree is worth it for many students. This degree allows you to expand your knowledge of biochemistry, medications, and the pharmaceutical industry. You can also develop valuable interpersonal skills like communication and collaboration. Graduates who earn an RPh degree often become licensed pharmacists.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that around 13,600 new jobs will open for pharmacists each year over the next ten years. These experts find employment in many healthcare environments, including grocery store pharmacies, mail-order pharmacies, and medical practices. This flexible degree can also open job opportunities in education, insurance, sales, and other industries.

Getting Your PharmD Online

Eshelman School of Pharmacy ranked No. 1, other UNC graduate programs in top 10

Beard Hall of the Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2016.

Beard Hall of the Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2016.

CORRECTION : A previous version of this article incorrectly paraphrased Eshelman School of Pharmacy Dean Angela Kashuba. The story has been changed to more accurately reflect Kashuba's statement. The Daily Tar Heel apologizes for this error.

U.S. News & World Report named UNC's  Eshelman School of Pharmacy  the top pharmacy school in the nation in its recently released 2024 rankings. It's the third consecutive time the school has been honored with the top spot.

Beyond the pharmacy school's success, multiple UNC graduate programs were also named in the national top 10 for their respective categories this week  in the " Best Graduate Schools" report.

Other highly-ranked University programs include the Gillings School of Global Public Health — ranking No. 2 out of 213 programs — and the UNC  School of Social Work, which moved up to tie for fourth overall. The UNC School of Law reached a record-high of No. 20 out of 196 law schools.

"Carolina's graduate programs are exceptional and it’s no surprise that our schools are ranked so highly among peer institutions by U.S. News & World Report, as well as other measures,” interim Chancellor Lee Roberts said in a press release. “Carolina is always proud to be recognized for our dedication to a world-class education. Every one of our graduate programs contributes to making us the leading public research university.”

U.S. News ranks professional schools programs like business, education, law and nursing, annually based on expert opinion and statistical indicators of the quality of research, faculty and students. Its rankings of graduate programs in public affairs, computer science and public health are based on qualitative ratings of academic quality.

For pharmacy schools, the rankings, based on a survey of peers from pharmacy schools across the United States, a re published every four years.  The last three times the rankings have been published — 2016, 2020 and 2024 — UNC’s pharmacy school was named the best in the nation.

Pharmacy school  Dean Angela Kashuba said in an email that she was proud of and honored by the school's No. 1 ranking. She pointed to the people who make the school successful: the students, staff, faculty, alumni and partners.

“Our program is unique in that one-half of our curriculum is experiential education: in a given semester, our students flow in and out of the classroom,” Kashuba said . “They move out of the classroom into clinical environments to apply what they have learned to patient care, and then move back into the classroom with the context of what they learned from patients.”

At any given time, around 225 pharmacy students are supporting patient care across North Carolina, she said .

Ryan Clark , a graduate student in the pharmacy school, said he wants to stay in North Carolina after graduating in 2026 and further contribute to the school’s mission to serve health care throughout the state — especially in rural communities. He said the pharmacy school’s mission and ranking contributed to his reasons for applying after attending UNC as an undergraduate .

Now almost halfway through his program at the school, Clark said he feels as though the ranking remains accurate.

“Everyone associated with our program, whether it's faculty, students or alumni, is extremely driven to hold pharmacy to a high standard and continue to advance the field for the better,” Clark said .

In addition to this year being the first time the law school reached No. 20, the UNC School of Law is also the seventh law school among public universities.

First-year UNC law student Audrey Cooke graduated from UNC with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering in 2021 and then worked for two years before attending the School of Law. Cooke said she didn’t always know she wanted to pursue law, but because of her undergraduate experience at UNC, it wasn’t a hard sell for her to come back.

UNC is phenomenal in terms of BAR passage rates, job placement and alumni network, Cooke  said,  all of which she values as a student.

“I think UNC sits at a very good place and that we’re very well-respected as an institution,” Cooke said . “And so we pull both from the merit of our institution and the merit of the individual, and I think you can really leverage that in a lot of interviews.”

Cooke said the law school has an opportunity to increase diversity of backgrounds by encouraging more interaction with other graduate programs at UNC, such as STEM programs.

She said she hopes the law school continues moving up in the rankings because law firms may consider school ranking when hiring — in addition to individual merit and academic performance.

Student Perspective: Pursuing a PharmD and Engineering Technology Management Degree

pharmacy phd online programs

Meet Vixen Cope, a first-generation college student from Coffman Cove, Alaska, and Longview, Washington. After completing a degree in chemistry at Western Washington University, Vixen decided to pursue a career in pharmacy driven by her passion to help others live healthier lives. Vixen ultimately chose Washington State University for her PharmD because of its interdisciplinary approach ingrained in the campus and program. Hear her perspective on doing dual degrees in Engineering Technology Management and Doctor of Pharmacy .

Why did you choose pharmacy as a career?

I chose pharmacy as a career path because my rural upbringing brought unique challenges to my mom’s medical needs. After my family moved back to urban Washington, we were grateful to learn the value of health care access and how pharmacists are vital to patient safety, medication understanding, and treatment success. I wanted to help others in a way that merged my interests in science with my compassion to help others. Becoming a pharmacist will allow me to continue reciprocating the kindness and care that has been given to my family and inspire non-traditional students to pursue pharmacy.

What are some highlights of pursuing a dual degree in Engineering and Technology Management?

Throughout my educational journey, I’ve always enjoyed leadership and remained heavily involved in extracurriculars. I enjoy learning about a team’s unique dynamics and its system’s operations, then analyzing them for attainable improvements. I wanted to continue these interests by integrating them into my pharmacy career. The ETM focuses on a variety of strategies to improve a system through statistics, management, and analysis strategies to make recommendations that are individualized to the situation, team, and environment. There are many settings that pharmacy is involved in and I will be able to adapt and apply my ETM knowledge to provide system improvements and enhance synergy to improve pharmacy and better serve our patients.

Can you tell us about the Engineering and Technology Management experience?

My experience with the program was very involved and utilized active learning to make every lecture more personalized to the students’ interests. Since the ETM students all had a variety of career goals and backgrounds, we all learned from each other, and the professors were able to adapt lectures and projects to benefit everyone’s interests. The many team projects and tools kept me engaged with the material and how to actively apply them in a team setting with goals, which built hard and soft skills that I can utilize in the real world. Some of the most interesting topics I learned were about constraint analysis, innovation management, lean management and Kaizen methods.

What’s your advice to aspiring pharmacy students?

I would recommend reaching out to the ETM advisors as soon as possible to begin asking questions and inquiring about the program. Being able to start the dual degree during my first year in the PharmD program helped me plan and distribute the ETM courses in a way that would minimize its interference with the rigor of the PharmD courses.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
