And "High-Rise" the movie did hook me. The story of a seemingly inexplicable breakdown of social order within an apartment building outside London that's been designed to approximate a community, "High-Rise" was a speculative fiction very much of the time when it was written. Wheatley and Jump's first smart decision in adapting the ...

His new film High-Rise is a bizarre spectacle, sleek and seedy and mad: a world of sideburns, brutalist concrete and shag-pile carpeting matted with fag ash and blood. Very strange, very Sanderson.

  6. In J.G. Ballard's High-Rise, the metaphor eats the story and Tom

    R. 1h 59m. By A.O. Scott. May 12, 2016. Robert Laing, a handsome doctor with tired eyes and a skeptical smirk — which is to say a doctor played by Tom Hiddleston — remarks at one point that he ...

Much like Ballard's books, much like Cronenberg's Crash, Wheatley's High-Rise is destined to be a polarizing film, and that is exactly what it is; a gorgeous, brutal, lush work of art that ...

  12. Review: 'High-Rise' is a towering display of destruction

May 11, 2016 1 PM PT. The final scene of "High-Rise," Ben Wheatley's exuberantly nasty screen adaptation of J.G. Ballard's 1975 novel, plays over an excerpt of one of Margaret Thatcher's ...

  17. Movie Review: "High-Rise"

You don't get a to take a bow or receive a gold star for figuring out the Big Allegory in "High-Rise." It's there, front and center and obvious to all, thanks to sci-fi novelist J.G. 19. High-Rise Movie Review

Our review: Parents say ( 3 ): Kids say ( 5 ): Adapted from J.G. Ballard's 1975 cult favorite novel, the movie starts well, but as the story descends into chaos, the film follows, losing the thread of what it wants to say and why we should care. 20. Movie Review: High-Rise (2015)

While it might have been more effective to explore the reasons behind the various strata in more depth, the film's commitment to its class-induced delirium is commendable. 23. Movie Review: High Rise

The cinematography, acting, costume, set design, and music are amazing. High Rise is a speculative fiction dystopian movie set in a sort of alternate 1970's. There are many signs that it's the early 1970s, not the least of which is that all the adults, including a very pregnant woman (Helen, played by Elisabeth Moss) smoke and drink non-stop.
