Best TikTok Channels to Follow if You Love Film

TikTok has been changing the way people consume news, media, and even film criticism, and these channels are great for movie lovers.

TikTok is a social media platform which has become surprisingly massive in the past few years, despite being owned by a Chinese conglomerate with ties to China's government. Its algorithm allows many people to see and follow others they would never interact with. Once the TikTok algorithm receives a sense of what you enjoy, you will be shown videos from that 'side' of TikTok. For example, for those who watch films, it would be called "filmtok" or "movietok." Your FYP (or 'For Your Page') will show you only movie and film-related content if those are the only video you like or watch.

There are a few different types of creators in the movietok and filmtok side of TikTok. The most significant number of creators on this side of TikTok is "list" creators. They do videos such as "top five saddest movies of all time " or " top 10 Christmas movies ," all of which are opinionated and not for everyone. You can find any of these channels easily by searching for the title of those lists, but if you're more of a filmtok person, they will most likely find you without searching for them.

If you are looking for new shows or films, follow all the basic streaming services or any major channels you like. Most have a TikTok and are promoting their works constantly. This is an excellent way to track which shows and films are coming up for their premier. Aside from that, there are a variety of great TikTok channels out there for every kind of cinephile.

Reviews and Critiques

For a less biased recommendation on what to watch next, check out Maddi Koch (@maddikoch). She is a creator with three million followers who recommends movies to her viewers. She gives a short synopsis and generally a reason, in her own opinion, why she thinks you should watch the film. While this is her opinion, her followers all tend to agree with her recommendations, giving her more credibility for her taste in cinema. For mainstream movie recommendations, she is the channel to follow.

For a little more depth into the movie's themes, plot, and characters, check out Cameron Kozak (@kozak_cameron). He is a TikTok creator who reviews films. He generally begins with a short synopsis and then critiques the movie. He has 1.4 million followers and often has positive and agreeable comments with his critiques in the comments on the videos. He also reviews film industry aspects, such as "worst movie poster of 2022," and provides interesting thoughts on the film marketing industry. This is the account to follow for movie reviews, critiques, and more about the industry.

Another great reviewer is Megan @JStoobs. She gives fun but in-depth movie and comic reviews to her viewers. She has about 500 thousand followers and lots of positive feedback in her comments. She does reviews and content such as the top 15 most important animated films, which discusses what each film did for the world of animation.

Comedic TikTok Creators

Tiktok also has some very comedic videos for people who love film. Many channels take a cinematic concept and redo it perfectly in a comic light.

Nicholas Flannery (@NicholasFlannery) is one of those channels. He has three million followers on TikTok and creates accurate parodies of pieces of films in different genres. He makes videos such as "the dead wife at the beginning of the movies," which is a montage of him dressed in a wig and women's clothing, doing activities such as sipping coffee on the front porch, swinging in a park, going on a stroll, etc. It accurately portrays all the stereotypes that montage films tend to do when the character has a dead wife.

Related: Social Media in Movies: The Best Films

Flannery has many others, including "every cafeteria scene in a teen movie," or "every movie when the husband is hiding something." All are extraordinarily accurate and make you think about how many similar movies set up their plots and scenes with overused clichés .

Caroline Klidonas (@Carolineklidonas) is a somewhat lesser-known creator with 354 thousand followers. She does videos similar to Nicholas, mostly parodying the stereotypes of genre movies . She tends to make videos in a series, outlining entire plots of essential films such as her "heist movie series," which involves three videos. These include the classic heist movie stereotypes of the meeting scene, the heist, and the plan going wrong. She puts all her series in organized categories to find at the top of her feed.

Overall, TikTok can provide you with whatever film content creation you want; you simply need to stay on the filmtok side of the algorithm, so it pops up frequently on your FYP. If you have trouble getting to filmtok, merely search #filmtok in the search bar and scroll through the hashtag for a while, liking videos. This should steer your FYP algorithm more toward the content you want to see.

When I settle in at the end of the day — or during the middle of it, honestly — for a calming bout of girlrotting, and open up TikTok, I usually don’t have to spend that long on my For You Page before I come across a movie clip which I simply have to stop and watch.

Fifteen years ago at the very dawn of the smartphone era, David Lynch expressed withering contempt for people who dared to watch movies on their phones. “If you’re playing the movie on a telephone you will never in a trillion years experience the film, you’ll think you have experienced it, but you’ll be cheated,” he said, in footage from the special edition DVD for Inland Empire . “It’s such a sadness that you think you’ve seen a film on your fucking telephone.” But he changed his tune somewhat when it came time to release Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017, even giving advice on the size of the screen and the quality of the image and the sound. But he still assumed that you’d be watching the whole thing at one time.

Sorry to David Lynch, but TikTok has changed even that. When it comes to watching movies on TikTok, it’s like taking whatever is left of the platonic ideal of a film and completely deconstructing it to suit the current attention-lacking age. No longer are we bound to outmoded norms such as the linear progression of plot and story. A clip of a scene from the middle of a movie will pop up on my FYP, and immediately my scroll will be arrested, as I’m sucked in. I watched a characterful moment from the movie Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris like this — now deleted from TikTok — specifically, the scene where she triumphs over some snooty French people to get into a fashion show .

@jacklovefilm Part 5 | #turningred #movie #tiktok #film ♬ original sound - JackClips

This isn’t a microtrend or isolated phenomenon. TikTok accounts dedicated to just sharing clips of movies have followers in the hundreds of thousands , or even more . Clips seem to be saturating everyone’s FYP, regardless of individual taste — or perhaps because of it. In an anecdotal poll of friends, one person reported that he was getting lots of “scenes where someone wins an argument” and Moneyball clips, and another told me she was getting excerpts of animated films like Toy Story 4 and Turning Red.

Sometimes a movie surpasses the individual algorithm to become an app-wide phenomenon. There was the time clips from the climactic scenes of Sully took over everyone’s FYPs , posted piecemeal, spawning a microtrend of Sully-related content on the platform; then there were the debates over 12 Angry Men between thousands of teens seeing it for the first time.

Oftentimes the accounts posting films in parts will wait between posting one scene and posting the next bite, invoking on a micro scale the kind of serialized anticipation offered by Twitter threads and Wattpad fanfics. The cliffhanger ending for this clip from M. Night Shyamalan’s campy flop The Happening that ended up on my FYP is probably what helped it rack up over 25 million views.

The account that shared the video, called THE WILD WOLVES, posts movies in 2-minute clips. Instead of just letting the clip play with black bars above and beneath it, the TikToker drops it into a template of a darkened theater, including a moving, living audience in their seats below the screen. Another account called Happy Movie posts TV clips as well , and also layers in weird and bad suspenseful stock music over them, for some reason.

@xiaoshuai099 Start with simple vocabulary #fyp #movie #foryou #sciencefictionmovie ♬ original sound - xiaoshuai099

Most of these accounts aren’t posting the entire movie or episode — they’re just clipping out particularly good bits and scenes that will likely perform well, like Amy Adams’ most compelling turns in Arrival . The serialized format rarely allows viewers to catch the entire film on the app — much less watch the whole thing uninterrupted — instead narrowing it down to 10 minutes’ worth of action-packed highlights.

A lot of the clips that I had bookmarked during my research for this story were taken down in the time it took me to write it, presumably due to copyright strikes on the part of the studios, which makes sense. It’s freebooting, pure and simple — good old content farming, the sort that happens on any other platform that allows video.

But TikTok is different from these other platforms, because it’s fostered totally novel social interactions. You can flick your finger up to open a TikTok’s comment section to read or contribute to it while the clip keeps playing in the background. It’s sort of like Hollywood’s ideal for “second-screen” content — film and TV designed for viewers who are on their phone while it’s playing — in action, all inside one device. This is the future that the executives behind Quibi (RIP) probably peered through the veil to see, but couldn’t quite get a handle on.

@happymovie666 PART 6 #tiktok #sciencefiction #film #movie ♬ original sound - Happy Movie

Of course, the obvious question is “why not just go sit down and stream the whole movie?” But that’s not the point. Watching a movie on your own, in a traditional 90-plus minute widescreen format, does not allow for the kind of participatory jubilee occurring around and on top of these clips. My favorites are the confident comments on clips of murder and devastation from horror movies that basically amount to “if i was at chernobyl i wouldv stopped it” — but so many clips feature a delightful smorgasbord of playful commentary, serious discussion, and reminiscences about people’s first time seeing the movie.

Though, a fair amount of the time, the comments are thousands of versions of the same phrase: “name of the movie?” Because that’s another thing about these accounts — much of the time, these creators don’t even give the title of the movie or TV show they’re posting. This is clear engagement bait. The lack of contextual information in these TikToks, and their serialized nature, make comments which demand updates or the next part of the story practically unavoidable.

And of course, there’s also the serendipitous nature of the algorithm that brings you a movie or TV clip. Half the time if I’m offered up a TikTok video that’s longer than 30 seconds, I’ll usually flick past it: I’m on the app for high-speed stimulation, not lectures. But a movie clip has the effect of deactivating that instinct — something about the narrative presentation has an instant gripping effect, and I’m sucked in. And sometimes, it can even be enough to get me to close the app when it’s over.

How to tag movies & tv shows on your tiktok videos.

New IMDb collaboration provides insight into movies and shows featured in TikTok videos. Discover the steps to tagging titles in your next video.

TikTok users can now link the movies and shows they discuss through a partnership with IMDb. Fans gravitate to the entertainment app to connect with one another and find information about their favorite movies and TV shows. TV enthusiasts, niche fandoms, and critics drive the community, ready to discuss content they're passionate about. In the past, viewers would need to leave the app and go to IMDb’s website directly to learn about the titles they came across on TikTok. But that is inconvenient, so users often keep scrolling the FYP .

TikTok has added a new feature that allows users to link directly to movie and TV titles within their videos. Powered by IMDb data, these links will provide information about movies and TV shows, such as the top cast members, director, genre, release date, runtime, and user rating. The partnership between the Bytedance company and the entertainment database will help users discover and acquire information about the content available without needing to leave the social media app.

RELATED: How To Link Your BookTok Recommendations On TikTok

How To Link Movies And TV Shows On Tiktok

Tagging movies and shows takes little time and is beneficial for creators. Start by opening the app and creating a new video by pressing the ‘+’ button. Create the TikTok video as usual, and navigate to the final post-editing page. At that point, select the ‘ Add link ’ button below the description. Next, select the ‘ Movies and TV ’ tab. Users can search for any of the millions of titles available on IMDb, and choose up to five titles per TikTok. Once the desired content is selected, press the ‘ Add ’ button. Users will see the tag above the caption when they view the video. Tap the link, and TikTok will display a description and key facts about the selected title.

While this feature is advantageous for movie producers, it also helps content creators. For example, the details for each link include a collection of TikToks that also tag the same movie or TV Show and help lend exposure to the creator. Production companies may sponsor content creators and request their tag be included in a relevant video, providing an extra source of income.

IMDb also mentions that a linking feature will be possible on the user’s profile. For now, it is unclear if this is available to all users or if it is an earned feature once a certain number of followers is achieved. To get the latest features, update the app regularly. Specific updates may roll out in different regions at different times as well. The IMDb and TikTok collaboration is available only in the U.S. and the United Kingdom for now.

TikTok Movie Recommendations

By Sophie Wells

Over the years, artists around the world have produced films with the ability to bring out some of the most intense emotions stored within each of us, both positive and negative. Many know how it feels to leave a theater with the weight of a storyline on your shoulders, stunned by the cinematic beauty that has unfolded before your very eyes. There are some movies that just stick with you, and give you new and interesting perspectives on various different aspects of life.

TikTok, being the creative and popular app it is, has become a great outlet for influential movie recommendations, especially during these strange, quarantined times. While you may have already seen some of these fan-favorites, it may be worthwhile to give one or two of the unfamiliar ones a try…I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

THRILLER and/or HORROR

To start, there are four particularly thrilling and scary movies that continue showing up on TikTok. Being that I have seen them myself, I can attest to the fact that each one will bring chills down your spine in their own unique and haunting way. More specifically though, I’d recommend these two if you’re looking for more of a scare:

American Psycho (2000)

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more thrilling experience (with hints of horror and mystery,) I would go with one of these:

Shutter Island (2010)

Gone Girl (2014)

The way I see it, the dramas that have been consistently and frequently recommended originate from three sub-categories: crime-based dramas, dramas involving romance in some aspect, and dramas with a little more thrill to them. No matter which you choose from, however, I guarantee the plot will have you captivated the entire time.

Crime Dramas

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Pulp Fiction (1994)

The Godfather (1972)

Romantic Dramas

Little Women (2019)

American Honey (2016)

The Breakfast Club (1985)

Lady Bird (2017)

Drama Thrillers

Fight Club (1999)

Django Unchained (2012)

Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Black Swan (2010)

What makes a great comedy? Some say it’s the charismatic characters and amusing, yet relatable storyline. Some say it’s the wide range of humor and timing of jokes. I say it’s all of the above, and is displayed in all of the following TikTok-recommended films:

Clueless (1995)

Superbad (2007)

Wedding Crashers (2005)

Step Brothers (2008)

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Last, but not least, we have action. The following recommended movies contain a stunning mix of science fiction, adventure, and coincidentally, were all directed by the talented and widely-recognized filmmaker, Christopher Nolan.

Inception (2012)

The Dark Knight (2008)

Interstellar (2014)

Why everyone is watching shows and films on Tiktok now

Increasing numbers of users are watching entire films and tv shows via clips posted to the app – but why.

TikTok has come a long way since its beginnings as the humble app which launched a thousand viral dance trends. Today, people turn to TikTok for career advice , recipe ideas , makeup hacks , book recommendations , news , and many even treat it as a search engine . But the latest trend is to use the app as a streaming service.

“I thrive off watching a movie on TikTok in 43 parts,” one tweet reads . “ I think I watched the whole season of The Bear from all these little clips on TikTok today ,” says another . From Grey’s Anatomy to Severance to Ted Lasso , it appears as though more and more people are eschewing the likes of Netflix and Disney+ in favour of watching snippets or full-length videos of shows and movies posted to TikTok.

Usually, a show or film clip will get picked up by the algorithm and pop up on your FYP. It’ll pique your interest, you’ll go in search of the next clip, and subsequently fall down a rabbit hole where you end up watching clip after clip of the entire thing on an account dedicated to sharing snippets.

Waves, Trey Edward Shults

One account , with over 11,000 followers, has painstakingly uploaded nearly 300 clips of Emily in Paris . Another is dedicated to posting clips from the second season of  The White Lotus , with the first scene alone racking up over 311,000 views . Another account , which boasts over one million followers, has posted condensed versions of a number of films including The Help, Legally Blonde, and Confessions of a Shopaholic . The clips have millions of views, too – the scene where Elle enters the courtroom in Legally Blonde boasts 22 million . Even streaming service Peacock has jumped on the trend, as they recently made the full pilot episode of their comedy series, Killing It , available to watch on TikTok ahead of the second season premiere. Millions of users viewed the episode – which was split into five parts – on the app.

Habiba, 27, tells Dazed that she recently started rewatching Gossip Girl and Keeping Up With The Kardashians on TikTok, and has even watched small, independent films on the app. “ When it comes to movies, I struggle to watch new ones, which I think is probably linked to anxiety, plus it takes me quite a while to get into a new film,” she explains. “So when I have the option of watching a few clips of a film on the clock app, I dive right in.”

Reality TV shows are also particularly popular watches on TikTok. Ed*, 25, uses TikTok to watch shows like Love Island and Below Deck , plus, as he puts it, “any trash TV that falls into my lap”. Similarly, Don, 25, watches reality TV shows through bitesize clips, citing the UK, US, and Australian iterations of Love Island and Survivor as favourites.

@y2k.movies rue at cassie’s house Part 1 ☑️ #tiktokmovies #movieclips #euphoria #movie ♬ Aesthetic - Tollan Kim

On the surface, the idea of ‘watching’ a show or film by trawling the app for minute-long clips posted in the wrong order might sound impractical and unenjoyable. But it’s easy to understand how TikTok users get sucked in. For starters, there’s the community aspect: users can discuss the shows in the comments section, akin to the way Love Island viewers often live-tweet while episodes are airing. “I t’s fun to watch something and see funny comments, or see a take on something you hadn't thought of before,” Habiba explains. Ed agrees, adding that watching on TikTok means “you get to read comments on stuff which is a bit more fun than just watching on your own.”

Another large part of the appeal is the ability to skip through the boring parts of movies and shows. “TikTok usually shows the best bits of the film, so I don't have to sit through the boring bits,” Habiba says. Ed and Don both feel similarly. “ Reality TV is full of pointless filler storylines that I just do not care about,” Ed says.

Don adds that he “hated” his experience in 2018 of watching Love Island ‘normally’ – that is, on television – and describes watching the show in full as “a waste of time”. This year, Don says he managed to keep up with the series solely by watching snippets online. “Just from watching clips, I found I was forming the same opinions or getting the same impressions of contestants and their dynamics as Twitter users who were watching the show in full,” he recalls. “I was able to keep up with all the jokes and memes and was surprised I didn’t feel out of the loop.”

Some might argue that there’s something more sinister behind this trend, and that it’s further proof that Gen Z’s brains have been so corrupted by growing up in the age of instant gratification that we can’t even bear to watch a moment of ‘boring’ TV or film anymore. Even Ed admits that he reckons he’s drawn to watching shows on TikTok because of his “zoomer brain”.

@movietiktok14 ✨𝗘𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱✨Part 1 #eternalsunshineofthespotlessmindfullmovie #eternalsunshineofthespotlessmind #fyp ♬ Complete Silence 3 Minutes - Michael Clendening

But is “zoomer brain” really a thing? Bobby Duffy, Professor of Public Policy at King’s College London and author of Generations: Does When You’re Born Shape Who You Are? , doesn’t think so. “ There is no real evidence of shortening attention spans at an individual level – the idea that young people can’t concentrate for long is a common trope throughout history,” he explains. “We always need to bear this in mind when interpreting trends that are driven by or focused on young people – we have a bias to think of these as damaging or a sign of weakness in younger generations, compared with when we were young.” After all, a Gen Z TikTok user flicking from a clip of Gossip Girl to an influencer promoting hair gummies isn’t really dissimilar to previous generations channel-surfing on TV.

Dr Duffy adds that there are clearly “a number of motivations” behind this trend of watching shows and films on TikTok, beyond ‘Gen Z have nonexistent attention spans’. There’s the simple fact that TikTok is free while many young people are “cash-strapped”, for example. Additionally, it’s also obvious that “the design of platforms like TikTok is to keep you engaged in an endless stream of bite-sized content”. Many of the accounts which upload these videos are doing so because it’s clear this is quickly becoming an easy ticket to virality, engagement, views, and followers.

Of course, this way of watching isn’t always appropriate, especially for shows and movies which are more character-driven than plot-driven – it’s unlikely Lost in Translation or The Sopranos would hit the same if you watched them exclusively on disjointed clips on TikTok. Dr Duffy notes that watching snippets “is not great for depth of understanding” and that there are “downsides” to engaging with media so fleetingly like this. “You do lose some sense of connection to deeper thinking that takes more time and reflection,” he says. “If you’re constantly bombarded with new content, it’s hard to find that space, and you lose the context. It’s similar to music, where the capability to dip into streaming platforms means playlists and individual songs are the focus, rather than full albums.”

But people who watch shows on TikTok are well aware of this: Habiba says that often watching a few clips will inspire her to go and watch the shows in full anyway, while Don clarifies that he’ll still watch shows in full when every episode is truly worth watching. “ Are You The One? is undefeated,” he says. Because ultimately, this trend says more about TikTok’s ability to keep us engaged and users’ innovation when it comes to finding new ways to go viral than it does about young people’s attention spans.

10 Horror Movies That Are Popular Among TikTok Users, Ranked

Some great ones here.

Lucas Paul in Skinamarink

When it comes to horror movies , a lot of the time, I’ll watch a new one based on word of mouth. I gave the Ari Aster horror movies a shot at first because I heard how scary they were. I watched all the Halloween films based on my mom’s recommendation. I even checked out some goofy horror comedies because my friends told me to try them. Many horror movies I’ve come to love were brought to my attention with recommendations.

In 2020 I discovered a new way of getting these suggestions: TikTok. Of course I found myself on the horror side at one point, and I have now been led to some fun movies – and others that aren't so much fun. Here are ten horror movies I have to talk about – ranked from worst to best.

Dali Rose Tetrault in Skinamarink

10. Skinamarink (2022)

No. Just no.

Skinamarink is what is classified as a Canadian experimental horror film that primarily follows two children who are left at home alone, and that’s really all you know. At first, you may think this is a good premise to follow, but the movie is so boring.

I get who this movie is trying to go for – most of the shots are weird sounds and long shots of dark spaces. It’s supposed to appeal to those scared of the unknown and what could emerge from the dark. But Skinamarink is the slowest, non-horror filled horror movie. Even when there were jumpscares, they did not feel earned. You could tell from a mile away that they were coming.

I get why some people might think this is a revolutionary film , but it’s not for me.

Megan in Megan is Missing.

9. Megan Is Missing (2011)

Megan is Missing came out when found footage horror movies were starting to get popular again (during the Paranormal Activity era), and the film itself got quite popular on TikTok in 2020. But I have to say, there’s nothing really surprising about it in any way.

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

The main premise is about a teenager who meets a boy online and decides to meet with him, and ends up going missing, hence the title. We are given several interesting scenes that are supposed to terrify, and to other viewers, sure, they could be scary. But for someone who is so used to found-footage horror movies, this movie did nothing for me.

Megan Fox with lighter on tongue in Jennifer's Body

8. Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Okay, hear me out – I freaking love this movie. Jennifer’s Body was one of my favorite movies when I was just getting into horror, whether it be because it was a little campy, or Megan Fox ’s performance, or even Amanda Seyfried . But I don’t think it deserves to be considered horror.

If you need a reason to check out Jennifer's Body, here are five for you.

The movie started to make the rounds again on TikTok in 2020/2021. The film follows the title character, Jennifer, who gets possessed by a man-eating demon after she is sacrificed by her favorite band in the woods. The film itself is so much fun and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it, but certainly not the best horror film that TikTok has put on my For You page. It’s more funny than scary.

Kate Siegel as Maddie in Hush

7. Hush (2016)

Mike Flanagan has become a master of horror with some of his most recent films and TV shows, and this movie furthers that. Hush, starring Kate Siegel, tells the story of a deaf woman who has to survive a home invasion.

This movie isn’t gory in any way, but what makes it better than the others is that it’s so creative. I mean, think about it – we always think that we’d survive any horror movie like the Scream franchise because we have all five of our senses, but just imagine if you had to survive a home invasion while deaf.

That’s terrifying – but Flanagan takes it a step further and really integrates the viewer into the experience because you feel as if you’re the one being chased. The sound design is great.

Justin Long in Tusk

6. Tusk (2014)

This is a weird-ass movie. But I like it.

Tusk is a horror comedy directed by Kevin Smith and starring Justin Long about a podcaster who ends up getting more than he bargained for while conducting an interview with a retired sailor who is creepier than he seems. This A24 horror movie is strange as heck, but it works in a weird way.

I have to say that I do like it much more than many of the other horror movies before this. It doesn’t try too hard to be scary, and really embraces its hilarious aspects. It almost reminds me of M3GAN – it knows exactly what it is and isn’t trying to fool you. It’s just so weird.

One of the subjects of The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

5. The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

Another documentary-style horror movie, The Poughkeepsie Tapes also got popular around 2020/2021, and is about the fictional murders of a serial killer in Poughkeepsie, New York, which features “interviews, footage,” and material that is obtained from the serial killer – basically, his snuff films.

While I would also categorize this movie as a found-footage horror movie, The Poughkeepsie Tapes actually feels quite scary. There are several gory moments that made me turn away from my screen, and others that had me quite interested. It’s not the best found-footage movie, but interesting enough.

AnnaLynne McCord in Excision.

4. Excision (2012)

Moving onto another horror film, Excision came out in 2012 and boy, this movie is something different. It’s about a young girl who has dreams of working in the medical field, but she isn’t quite right mentally and has a weird fascination with blood – so much so that she’ll do anything to get it.

This is one of those movies that I literally could not look away from, and I was upset when it ended. The performances were great, and it really makes you squirm in your seat. Plus, you can see a young Ariel Winter literally acting her butt off in a horror movie. I can’t recommend this one enough.

One of the subjects of Begotten.

3. Begotten (1989)

That’s right, we’re going all the way back to the 1980s. Shot entirely in black and white, Begotten takes its story from several creation myths, focusing mainly on Mother Earth and the Son of Earth, who set out on a journey.

This movie messes with your head, man. Where Skinamarink was an experimental horror film, Begotten is just on another level of experimental. You have no idea what the heck is going on and yet, you’re scared out of your mind. It’s creepy in all the right places and features some pretty gory sequences. Definitely a good pick.

The devil in Antrum.

2. Antrum (2018)

This movie literally comes with a warning before it, saying you could be cursed watching it. Come on. 2020 was a year for horror movies – and it was easy to stream.

This both a mockumentary and a horror film, focusing on the story of the actual film, Antrum, and the horrible things it has done to people, and then cuts to the film so it can be shown to the audience. The plot follows a pair of siblings and their journey in the woods. It's full of eerie imagery and has plenty of horrible trials for the siblings, such as running into cannibals and demons.

One of the stars of A Serbian Film.

1. A Serbian Film (2010)

Yeah…this film.

I discovered A Serbian Film (classified as an exploitation horror) in early 2022. The main premise follows a financially struggling pornstar who decides to work in an art film, only to find out later on that it’s a snuff film – and he’s going to be the star.

This movie…is disturbing. It’s been banned in several countries, and features heavy, heavy graphic violence. This was one of the first films in a while where, when it finished, I had to sit back and ask myself, “what the f*** did I just watch?” I felt dirty after watching it, disgusted almost. This is one of those movies where you certainly will never take your eyes away from the screen – but once it’s done, you never touch it again, which is why it’s number one on here.

TikTok is great for many things, but horror movie recommendations? Kind of a 50/50 split on that. Either way, you might have found a new favorite film here. Or, maybe I gave you a million reasons not to watch certain movies. Whatever the case, have fun binging.

Tubi and YouTube are the best sites for streaming free full-length movies, but you've got lots of other options

Watching free movies online is a convenient and frugal way to see the films you love right from the comfort of your own home. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's free movie streaming service includes tons of well-known films.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for a Variety of Movies: Popcornflix

Jump right into watching free movies on your TV, phone, or computer without even setting up an account.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from comedies and dramas to horror and action films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV you can to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for the best free movie sites on the internet. This list was last updated in March to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

Most of these sites have a mobile app for watching their movies. Take a look at our list of the best free apps for streaming movies so you can take the films with you wherever you go.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now at Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending Now — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Paddington 2, Hot Tub Time Machine, Penelope, Special Forces, Dheepan, Girl Next , and A Little Help.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Many aren't in HD.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free movies.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies . And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles that were uploaded by someone random. I'm talking full-length, totally legal movies, uploaded and managed by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch A Walk to Remember and Bram Stoker's Van Helsing ; both movies included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: The Longest Yard, Transcendence, Knowing, The Last Song, Hugo , and Donnie Darko .

Something you can't get with YouTube, but that is supported by most of these movie sites, is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't have an idea about what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Most Watched Movies , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Big Time Movie Stars . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that not only does it let you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Some examples of 2024 titles include Calber Island, Much Ado, Ember in the Woods, and Everything is Both .

One great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you found it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can also pay for movies here ( some are even still in theaters ).

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added list, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

Here are some of the most popular movies you can watch at Freevee: The Homesman, Tidal Wave: No Escape, F9: The Fast Saga, Serenity , and Overcomer .

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but there are also some with full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Examples include The Black Collective: Black Cinema, 00s Replay, Godzilla, Award Winners, Directed by Women , and Comfort Movies .

These are some of the most watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Norbit , Mean Girls, Conic the Hedgehog, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harlem Nights, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Top Gun , and She's the Man.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Popcornflix

Includes subtitles.

Has a one-page list of every movie available.

'Continue watching' section.

Can't sort by date or popularity.

Strange site navigation.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for examples, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals, and list some titles by a common theme. I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Movies are DVD quality.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming player. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is really high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Film Noir, Environment, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists, and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too, including Women Making History, Til Death Do Us Part, Cheap Thrills, Midnight Movies, and Best of the West.

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists these titles and more: To Kill a Mockingbird, Joy Ride, Collide, The Whole Truth, Men, Spree, and Scary Movie 4.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen here that are rare to find on a movie site: Festive Films, Undiscovered Gems, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , Short Movies, and Independent Cinema .

Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most watched movies are Machete Language, The Trolls, Afterlife, Words, and Play Hooky.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Supports 'resume watching.'

Clearly shows which titles are leaving soon.

Genre lists can't be sorted.

Few unique genres.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Autumn Road, Repeat, Night Night, Megan , and Infinitum: Subject Unknown .

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users, but if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Blitz, Far Cry, Pursued, It Came From the Desert, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

'Apples Never Fall': How to Stream the New Series From Anywhere

Annette Bening, Alison Brie and Sam Neill star in this adaptation of Liane Moriarty's bestselling novel.

Peacock streaming movies and TV logo

Author Liane Moriarty is no stranger to writing books worthy of on-screen adaptations -- TV hits like Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers  are two great examples. The latest show based on one of her bestselling novels is Apples Never Fall , a Peacock Original miniseries that follows a mysterious disappearance in the seemingly normal Delaney family.

After Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening) sell their tennis academy, they look forward to dedicating more time to their family. That's all cut short when a distressed woman knocks on their door and Joy suddenly disappears. Now, the seemingly happy couple's children (Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles) start to re-evaluate their parents' relationship and dig deeper into their family history.

Check out the new series and its streaming details below, including why a VPN may aid your viewing experience.

Choose from two different plans: an ad-supported Premium plan for $6 per month, or the $12-a-month ad-free Premium Plus plan that also lets you download shows and movies, and offers live, 24/7 access to your local NBC channel. You can stream on three devices at once and create up to six profiles.

How to watch Apples Never Fall from anywhere with a VPN

If you're traveling abroad and want to stream Apples Never Fall while away from home, a VPN could be your answer. With a VPN, you can virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to this series from anywhere in the world. There are other good reasons to use a VPN for streaming too.

A VPN is the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic. Using a VPN is also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. Streaming TV can be a bit smoother with a reliable, quality VPN that's passed our tests and security standards.

You can use a VPN to stream content legally as long as VPNs are legal in your country and you have a valid subscription to the streaming service you're using. The US and Canada are among the countries where VPNs are legal, but we advise against streaming or downloading content on illegal torrent sites. We recommend ExpressVPN , but you may opt for another provider from our best list such as Surfshark or NordVPN . And be sure to check out our lineup of the best VPN deals to save money.

Best VPN for streaming

ExpressVPN is our current pick for the most secure and reliable VPN service. It's fast, works across multiple devices and offers stable streams. ExpressVPN is normally $13 a month, but you can save 35% with an annual plan . There's also a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Read our review of ExpressVPN .

Follow the VPN provider's instructions for installation and choose a country where Apples Never Fall is streaming on Peacock. Before you open the streaming app, make sure you're connected to your VPN using your selected region. If you want to stream the show on more than one device, you may need to configure each one to ensure you are signed in. Go to settings and check your network connections to verify you're logged in and connected to your VPN account. Now you're ready to open Peacock to stream.

If you run into issues with streaming, first make sure your VPN is up and running on its encrypted IP address. Double-check that you've followed installation instructions correctly and you've picked the right geographical area for viewing. If you still encounter connection problems, you may need to reboot your device. Close all apps and windows, restart your device and connect to your VPN first. Note that some streaming services have restrictions on VPN access.

Warning: this episode contains descriptions of violence.

It’s been nearly six months since the Hamas-led attacks on Israel, when militants took more than 200 hostages into Gaza.

In a village called Nir Oz, near the border, one quarter of residents were either killed or taken hostage. Yocheved Lifshitz and her husband, Oded Lifshitz, were among those taken.

Today, Yocheved and her daughter Sharone tell their story.

On today’s episode

Yocheved Lifshitz, a former hostage.

Sharone Lifschitz, daughter of Yocheved and Oded Lifshitz.

A group of people are holding up signs in Hebrew with photos of a man. In the front is a woman with short hair and glasses.

Background reading

Yocheved Lifshitz was beaten and held in tunnels built by Hamas for 17 days.

There are a lot of ways to listen to The Daily. Here’s how.
