Student perspective: What I learned from my virtual internship

One day in early June, almost three months after I was abruptly sent home from college due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself waiting nervously in front of my laptop screen for the first day of my virtual internship as a research intern for the Emerging Markets Institute (EMI) at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business . At precisely 10 a.m., I smoothed down my sweater, ran my fingers through my ponytail, and clicked the “join” button with some trepidation. As I was introduced to each member of the EMI team, I was immediately struck by how truly international the EMI team is. Colombia, Brazil, India, China—it truly felt like all the emerging markets were represented. Soon after, I received my first task, and the biggest project of my internship: an exploration of emerging markets milestones.

Emerging markets milestones

Starting with the 2009 recession and ending with the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2010s have been an interesting decade for emerging markets. As I started researching the greatest achievements of emerging markets—a heartening exercise in the midst of all the negativity and hopelessness of the pandemic—I came to the realization that many of the E20, or the top 20 emerging markets as defined by GDP nominal, were victims of the famed curse of Sisyphus. As the story goes, Sisyphus was tasked with moving a boulder to the top of a mountain, only to have it roll back down again, thus keeping him in the cycle for eternity. Emerging markets are plagued by the same fate: They make slow but steady progress for a few years, rolling the “boulder” up the mountain, improving the quality of lives for their citizens, until a fresh crisis sends them back down again, demoralized and demotivated.

Brazil and Turkey, for example, had an extraordinary first half of the decade, with the former making great strides in poverty reduction and the latter in GDP growth. However, Brazil suffered a crippling recession in 2014 and the Turkish lira started plummeting against the dollar. Such is the story of many emerging markets.

But my research filled me with hope, because even for the emerging markets that had performed the worst economically, their scientific, social, technological, and cultural milestones showed progress. Argentina, which has been suffering from bad monetary policy, launched the first geostationary satellite built in Latin America. Nigeria, which has dealt with extreme poverty and insurgency, became home to a booming tech hub and joined the African Trade Agreement, the launch of which was a major step for the continent. And some countries have done so exceptionally well that they might be ready to graduate from the “emerging markets” category altogether—namely South Korea, China, Poland, Chile, and Indonesia.

Along with my research, I contributed to EMI’s social media presence by providing information for a milestones series, which featured a different emerging market every week. This provided me with the opportunity to learn more about digital media, marketing, and design, rounding off my internship experience perfectly.

The big—and small—picture

One of the things I most enjoyed about my research was that it led me to meet all sorts of people from around the world, all of whom were eager to help me because of our mutual connection with EMI. My partner Andrew Lim and I tried to speak to as many representatives of the emerging markets as we could. I spoke to students, professors, and businesspeople from Argentina, Colombia, India, Brazil, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea, China, Mexico, Russia, and more. By the end of all my Zoom interviews, I was proud to declare myself a professional at calculating time zone differences.

Other than these magnificent video conferencing skills, one of the biggest lessons I learned from this experience was to seek out different perspectives. The media, and our Western view of the world, will always come with its own set of biases and assumptions about other countries. And reporting always leans towards the negative, highlighting sensationalist stories and terrible tragedies.

While these stories are important and need to be heard, it is so important to also remember, especially in these times, that there are always good things happening in the world. When I spoke to a Nigerian citizen, he didn’t tell me about Boko Haram—he spoke proudly of the Nigerian music industry that has been gaining popularity worldwide. My contact in Mexico spoke of the country’s achievements in the arts, producing some of the world’s best ballerinas and opera singers, and a student from Colombia proudly described the country’s victory at the Tour de France.

Although they may seem trivial when placed next to international trade agreements or peace deals, in my opinion these achievements are just as important. They represent the day-to-day picture of the vibrancy of each individual country and region, giving importance to the people themselves rather than reducing them to a single mass, important only for political reasons. That’s not to say that the big picture doesn’t matter—but the smaller achievements are also important.

Most interesting milestones

Over the course of my project, I came across many interesting facts about the E20. Below are just a few of the milestones, big and small, that I most enjoyed researching.

• 2010 ⇒ Russian physicists are awarded the Nobel Prize for their research on graphene, the world’s thinnest known material.
• 2011 ⇒ China becomes the world’s second-largest economy.
• 2012 ⇒ “Gangnam Style,” a runaway hit by South Korean artist Psy, tops the charts and gains widespread popularity across the world.
• 2016 ⇒ Colombia’s historic peace agreement with Farc ends decades of violence and gives the group a place in the country’s political landscape.
• 2017 ⇒ Chile’s ALMA Telescope Array plays a crucial role in obtaining the first “image” of a black hole.
• 2018 ⇒ The African Free Trade Agreement is signed by 44 African countries.
• 2018 ⇒ China pledges to invest $14.7 billion in South Africa, including financing for infrastructure projects.
• 2019 ⇒ A Rice Tariffication Bill is passed in the Philippines, removing rice importation quotas and adding tariffs to boost the supply of the staple crop.
• 2020 ⇒ India is ranked the fifth largest economy in the world by GDP nominal, according to World Bank data from 2019.

Other Projects

Along with the milestones project, I was involved with other tasks as well, including ranking the E20 and editing videos. Helping out with a variety of projects allowed me to gain a wide set of skills and work with many different people.

My fellow intern Andrew and I were tasked with finding the most rational formula to rank the E20. In our exploration, we used data manipulation and analysis to choose the factors and weights we would use in our system, ultimately settling for a four-star ranking method calculated from GDP growth and poverty reduction data.

My tech skills are woefully inadequate, so I jumped at the chance to improve my video editing abilities for the EMI 10th Anniversary video series. In the process of listening to experts speak about their fields of study, I was able to absorb even more information about emerging markets to help with my milestones project, as well as network and make invaluable connections.

Looking back and looking forward

“ Looking back and looking forward, ” the EMI 10th Anniversary slogan, perfectly describes my own experience of the virtual internship. I spent much of my research looking back at the histories of the E20 at a time when there is so much uncertainty looking into the future. If the experience taught me anything, it taught me the strength and resilience of the human mind. Even when faced with economic decline or military warfare, the emerging markets I studied continued to innovate, increase access to technology, and even reduce poverty and violent conflict. Similarly, when kept away from friends, family, and work during a global pandemic, we have adapted extraordinarily quickly, using modern technology to stay connected even while we are apart. I’ve completed an entirely virtual, distanced internship this summer. To think I have never met any of my fellow interns or mentors seems ludicrous, because the relationships I’ve built and the skills I’ve gained are lifelong, whether acquired through a computer screen or at a café table.

I’m Kat and I’m interning at Nerdy Joy this summer. Virtual internships certainly depart from the traditional in-person format, and I frequently reflected on the differences, both positive and negative, before starting this program. Now, a week into my internship, I am pleasantly surprised by the experience; there is nice flexibility in my schedule because of the asynchronous work, but I still feel a sense of purpose in creating this application day to day. Even though I have just begun, I have been able to jump right into programming. It is refreshing to put my skills to use and learn new skills as well, such as using Expo with React Native and building style sheets according to Figma wireframes. Of course, the internship is not without its difficulties: in my first week with the company, I’ve learned that the startup is comprised of Turkish, English, and Korean native speakers, with little overlap in common languages. While this makes communication between team members a little difficult (not to mention having only a small window of time in which we can meet due to the drastic time zone differences), I feel grateful to be meeting with such a diverse team that is working to overcome these obstacles. I value clear communication and expectations; in working with Nerdy Joy, I am happy to report that the teams connect regularly and have planned each aspect of their company meticulously, even while the company is still in its nascent stages. On a side note, the language barrier has inspired me to start my Korean language course via Rosetta Stone (as pictured). Admittedly, sometimes, it almost feels like we are in different worlds, meeting up to compare work culture and politics and the education system in our respective countries and discussing our progress and strategies as we handle battles on our own fronts. However, whenever I meet with the CEO, who is trilingual and thus often serves as the intermediary, I have been able to see their passion for reforming the education system a little at a time, a goal that transcends language barriers and cultural differences. This goes for a broader worldview as well: in this past year especially, I have been amazed by how quickly we adapt to technologies that allow us to connect to others across the world, whether it is Google Meet or Zoom or Rosetta Stone. So, despite the challenges, there’s something to be said about this new era of virtual internships.

Opportunities and challenges in my remote internship at Brookings

Bumping into scholars in the halls is replaced with online meet-and-greets. The professional office setting is replaced with a background from your own home. COVID-19 has changed the world dramatically, including the switch to remote work. And interns like me, a college senior, who at the start of 2020 were beginning to think about their post-college careers, have had to navigate a new way of working and learning that has offered a myriad of new opportunities and challenges.

As an intern working from my home in Southern California, I have experienced firsthand how the pandemic has fundamentally shifted the professional world with lasting effects that will change the way of work for years to come. I began my Brookings Institution internship in October, more than six months since the institution’s workforce started working from home. During my time as an intern in the Office of Communications, I’ve assisted with authoring blogs, tracking media impact, and contributing to outreach strategies. To my benefit, these sorts of tasks were easy to do remotely, facilitated through virtual meetings and chats. I’ve also enjoyed having supervisors who directed me through meaningful projects and offered me a valuable role within the wider communications team. Brookings Human Resources has also been exceptional with creating intern-centered social hours to create a space to connect with fellow interns in a virtual setting. My colleagues have truly fostered an impactful internship experience and have invested a lot of effort in my professional development, even when remotely.

More flexibility FOR NETWORKING AND FAMILY …

Interning from home has given me flexibility that I hadn’t sought initially during my internship search process, but I’m grateful to have had. If I had been in Washington, D.C., I would have spent my time at the Brookings office building on Massachusetts Avenue, in class at D.C.’s University of California campus, and exploring the DMV area. But because this was not possible, I have been able to fit more on my plate by pursuing different opportunities that I may not have had otherwise.

This fall, I volunteered with a local candidate in her campaign for political office in my district. I also wrote several new stories for my university’s daily newspaper, a task that I had long wanted to work on. Most importantly, I was able to spend more time with family and friends (Zoom parties!) after having lived in college dorms throughout my undergrad years. Being able to see my parents and sisters on a daily basis was a nice reminder to enjoy the time I have with them and of the importance of a healthy work-life balance. The pandemic allowed for a break from the busyness – something several of us may not have wanted to admit in a pre-pandemic world. In reality, working from home has given me more of the scarcest resource: time. And as a soon-to-be college graduate stepping into an uncertain job market next spring, time is a much-appreciated resource for class finals, job applications, and management of the unpredictable pandemic.

Additionally, I have been able to start building a new network with colleagues at Brookings. As a remote intern, I quickly learned the importance of taking the initiative to set up virtual coffee chats to have the conversations I may have otherwise had informally by the office water cooler (I heard that the Communications office has a large kitchen and fancy water cooler). With many colleagues who are busy with work responsibilities and personal commitments at home, interns must learn to be proactive about scheduling time to meet with staff members. This was daunting at first, but I found it actually easier to talk to people over Zoom who may not have been as accessible in the office setting. By finding a quick 30-minute time slot with staffers, I’ve been able to gain career advice and insight that helped make my internship experience more purposeful.

… BUT Missing out on being in D.C.

I and other remote interns who have interests in politics and policy have lost opportunities to engage with the political hub of the nation.

However, COVID-19 has also taken away many of the aspects I had most looked forward to as an intern. Having lived in California for most of my life, I was eager to move to Washington, D.C., for the semester and finally enjoy colder weather, changing seasons, and this year’s presidential election right in front of the White House. I looked forward to sampling the East Coast lifestyle characterized by its busy work ethic and obsession with politics. In addition, I had hoped to network in-person with colleagues in Brookings and with others around Capitol Hill, including fellow interns trying to create a footprint in the professional world. While it is comforting to know that Washington, D.C., is not going anywhere in the post-COVID world, I and other remote interns who have interests in politics and policy have lost opportunities to engage with the political hub of the nation.

Aside from missing out on the D.C. lifestyle, other real-world implications have affected all remote interns in the age of COVID-19. The very nature of a remote internship means that we are not getting the experience of working in a professional setting. I’m missing the chance to figure out my quickest commute, to plan office-professional outfits, or to socialize with others in the organization – all because there is no opportunity to do so in person. As college-age interns like myself enter the workforce in the coming months and years, many of us going into entry-level jobs may have very little experience in an office setting, or perhaps have even never stepped into an office before. This is a disappointing loss because learning about office culture is an important part of starting a career, yet remote interns are only gaining a glimpse of it from their computer screens. Moving into an uncertain future where remote work seems indefinite, it will be important to examine how remote work forms a culture of its own.

Looking to the future

So, I ask myself, “Where do I go from here?” An intimidating question for anyone, but especially for a college senior stepping into the workforce, but, at least at the start of 2020, I had anticipated that “normal” experiences would slowly unravel the answer. When the transition to remote work began, I was just at the start of my internship search process. I knew I wanted to pursue an internship regardless of its remote nature and shortened length of time, however, because it was important for me to gain experience and learn how the field of communications functions at a professional organization. But, the reality remains that the pandemic has left people and the economy hurting and the job market stagnant.

2020 has been an extraordinary year, to say the least, and my remote internship has also been anything but ordinary.

Nonetheless, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been able to intern with an institution as remarkable as Brookings. Unfortunately, it will soon come to an end, and I’m anxious to think about how the world may change within the span of 6 months from the new year to my graduation in June (the pandemic has shown a lot). And beyond June seems even more uncertain. My remote internship has been beneficial regarding the work I am being exposed to, but there are still certain parts of career-building that can’t be replicated online. I am still hopeful, however, that I will be able to slowly but surely find the answer to the question of what’s next through future positions and experiences, whether interning, volunteering, or some other opportunity I find.

2020 has been an extraordinary year, to say the least, and my remote internship has also been anything but ordinary. The Brookings Internship program has done a commendable job making remote interns feel valuable to the team and that our work is advancing the larger mission of the institution. I can walk away from my internship with the Office of Communications happily knowing that I have gained important experiences to add to my professional toolkit that will be critical when I enter the uncertain job market. As we approach the new year, when I hope we will start to put the pandemic behind us, I am encouraged by employers like Brookings where remote work opportunities can be impactful even while the definition of “going to work” remains in flux.

Mid-way Reflections: 7 Lessons I’ve learned as a virtual intern

It's hard to believe that my time as a virtual intern is more than halfway finished! Time truly flies by when you're learning so much everyday and compiling new skills and experiences! I'm very grateful for this opportunity to gain greater understanding of the education abroad field, as I've absorbed so much new invaluable information that has helped me gain the confidence to continue to pursue a career in this industry. Through navigating a virtual environment, I've learned intangible lessons about life, work, and myself along my virtual internship journey that I'd like to share with you all!

1. multi-tasking is not my friend.

For most of my life, I was under the interpretation that balancing multiple tasks at one time was a positive attribute and skill that I should aspire to have as I continue to navigate the professional world. I’ve come to the realization that juggling competing tasks concurrently isn’t the easiest, nor the healthiest thing to do. From my experience, I’ve gotten distracted, stressed, and confused when I try to balance all of my priorities at the same time. Now, I focus on completing the task that has the greatest importance and seeing it through to completion before moving on to the next one on my list. As a person who is prone to chronic stress, being diligent by starting and finishing one project at a time before moving on to the subsequent task has definitely helped me manage my time more efficiently and has aided me in not getting overwhelmed as easily or frequently.

2. You can never ask too many questions

I’m the first to admit it… I ask a lot of questions in life, and have often been described as a very curious and inquisitive person. During my time interning virtually, I have limited online time to chat with my supervisor and ask any pertinent questions related to my tasks and projects. During those times, I often find myself saying, “sorry I’m asking so many questions” or “I’m sorry what does that mean again”?. I’ve come to find out that it’s okay to ask a lot of questions, it’s even encouraged! The majority of the time, your supervisor will be pleased that you care so much about the topic or project to ensure you are doing it correctly. Quite often, it can be easy for interns to assume they understand what’s expected of them, and then run into trouble down the road because they mis-interpreted something or did not ask any clarifying questions initially. With all that said, speaking up and asking questions to make sure you understand your tasks and are on the right track is essential and you won’t or (shouldn’t) be penalized for being curious and eager to learn! Do you ask a lot of questions like me?

3. Embrace what works well and what doesn't

I think in life, and especially in the working world, there is quite a lot of significance in pinpointing what’s working well and what’s not in order to be more efficient and maximize your time everyday. As I’ve discovered throughout my virtual internship experience, some things work really well for me (i.e., taking intermittent breaks, taking walks to refresh, going outside to work, etc.), while other things that don’t work as well (i.e., multi-tasking, working without taking time for myself, starting on a project as soon as it is assigned, etc.), which may vary from what works well and doesn’t work well for your daily work life. I think it’s critical to determine the things that help make me feel more comfortable and productive, but to also keep in mind the things that don’t work as well for me, so I can understand myself and my habits better. For example, some people like having a daily and weekly schedule and need everything organized and written down to a T, I prefer relying on my memory and making mental notes of what my next task is. No one way to go about things is inherently right or wrong; it’s truly up to you to discover what best aligns with you and sets you up for the most personal and professional success. 

4. It's all about a balance

For most of my life, I’ve struggled with maintaining a sense of balance. Balance with juggling my academics and work with social and extra-curricular activities. Balance with taking time to care for myself and my mental and physical health. Balancing competing priorities and helping others while still being cognizant of my own needs. Although I don’t have as many competing priorities that are demanding my attention since the pandemic, I still constantly find myself trying to achieve a sense of balance in life, yet never fully feel satisfied. Working remotely gives me the independence and flexibility to construct the workday how I best see fit, but I still grapple with managing my time and striking a work-life balance. It’s still something I’m striving to improve and get better at; perhaps attaining a perfect balance isn’t truly achievable or realistic after all…

5. A change of scenery does wonders

As time has progressed, I’ve found it to be incredibly important to switch up my workspace environment and get a change of perspective to keep things different and new. I’ve come to find that working out of the same workspace (i.e., my bedroom) can be quite monotonous and uninspiring day after day. Additionally, being inside my room with possible distractions like my bed and TV are way too dangerous! When I’m noticing that I’m a bit sluggish or need a change of pace, I’ll switch it up and work outside to get a fresh perspective and help me feel re-focused and motivated to finish the rest of my work day. Not only does working outside give me something visually appealing and different to look at, it also feels less confining, and I feel better equipped to remain productive and on task. Taking in the sunshine and fresh air helps me stay positive and inspires me to accomplish my tasks with limited distractions and increases my motivation to be attentive and focused on my work tasks. Simple modifications like a change of scenery and a fresh vantage point can truly make a great impact.

6. Cultural connection can be achieved virtually

Initially, I was uncertain as to how I would be able to feel the impact of working with an international company rooted in a different culture, because my internship was in a purely virtual format, but boy was I wrong! I’ve come to realize that you don’t necessarily need face-to-face, in-person communication to feel the powerful and amazing effects of interacting with another culture. I’ve already learned so much about Irish culture and history just by virtually interacting with my colleagues and understanding how their culture impacts their life and how they conduct business. Every week I’m able to dive deeper into Irish culture and history just by reading current event news articles or watching YouTube videos about particular facets of Irish culture. It’s empowering and fulfilling to embrace the fact that cultural immersion and understanding can surely take place in a virtual setting, you just need to put the effort in and open your eyes to a new learning opportunity!

7. Don't forget to take care of yourself

Working virtually has made me more aware of how much I need to take time to listen to my body and take care of my myself. For most of my life, my academics and work have always taken presidence and have always been the most important aspects of my life. It can be very easy to have tunnel-vision on a certain project or task and not remember to take breaks and take the adequate time to care for yourself. Self-care was something I had previously viewed in a negative light, something I never made time for and never incorporated into my daily life. I’ve come to embrace the significance of devoting time during my busy work day to do at least one thing that will make me more relaxed or make me happy, like going for a walk or listening to music. Too often, do we neglect our physical, mental, and emotional health for the sake of working; you definitely can’t produce top-quality work you take pride in without caring for yourself and re-charging your batteries. Self-care doesn’t need to be stigmatized, and especially with everything going on in the world, we should embrace it!

I'm excited and expectant to discover and learn more important life lessons as I enter into the latter portion of my virtual internship. Cheers to learning more about ourselves and the world we live in!

Rahul is a 5th year medical student at the University of Oxford with a first class degree in medical sciences. Academically, his interests include cardiovascular physiology and surgery.

He has conducted research at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics in Oxford surrounding the relationship between sleep and metabolism, and he loves to share his research with young people.

Participating in the internship program expanded my knowledge of working in an office, gaining an international perspective from the foreign visitors or guests in the United States. During my internship, I was able to network with the council members as well as Board members; I was also able to be involved in the international affairs although not directly. This internship improved my organizational skills by learning on how to prioritize and even multitask.

Working in the office helped me to gain a lot of experience on various office activities. I was able to do various tasks in the office which I had never done before. During my internship, my colleagues and the directors in the office were very helpful in the office; they understood and accepted my learning disabilities and therefore they guided me in anything that I needed help.

The aspect that was most fulfilling in the internship was the relation and interaction I got with the international guests and visitors. I was able to get international perspective from the guests especially from the U.S. I was escorting some of the visitors to their places of appointment and meetings within the organization. Many visitors left me with a complete new understanding and perspective of the international countries.

I did not only understand about the international countries from the international guests, but I was also able to be involved in and kept current about the international affairs. In the office, my colleagues and the council members were also involved very much with the international affairs, hence I was in a better position to follow and know exactly what was happening on the international affairs. I was able to integrate the theoretical concepts that were related to the international affairs and politics and moreover to the realm of the international organizations.

In my internship, I was able to interact with the council and board members who enabled me to know and learn a lot in various areas. This was mainly due to bountiful experience they have and their willingness to assist me to learn and know more as a young person. They were cooperative and committed to their work, this gave me morale to be a committed person in my work later in life and furthermore to respect others, be focused and be a team maker.

I did not only get firsthand experience of working in an office, but I was able to improve my organizational skills by being able to learn on how to prioritize on various activities that I encountered during my internship. I was also to multi task due to encounter of various activities that needed to be accomplished immediately and almost the same time, thus my skills were sharply improved and I cannot regret having worked as an intern in that office. I was able to accomplish those objectives by fully interacting with those who had wealth of experience and international visitors and even to dedicate myself fully towards the internship. I was able to acquire valuable experience and skills from the tasks I undertook throughout the internship period in the organization. These experiences are very crucial to my career life and my studies that I am pursuing.
