Tom Hanks' Eerie Moment In Saving Private Ryan's D-Day Opening Clarified By Historian (& Yes, It's Accurate)

After the acolyte's cancelation, i'm seriously worried about star wars' most exciting upcoming movie, 10 things from the star wars original trilogy that haven't aged well.

With nearly a decade under its belt, Shudder has become a great home for independent and international horror titles, with everything from the Hell House LLC and V/H/S franchises to H.P. Lovecraft adaptations Suitable Flesh and Color Out of Space . In The Demon Disorder , the streaming service looks to continue its overall winning streak, but despite some promising elements, the Australian-made horror movie can never quite find the right rhythm to be thoroughly haunting or emotionally affecting from start to finish.

The Demon Disorder

Hailing from debuting co-writer/director Steven Boyle, best known for his makeup and special effects work on everything from Dylan O'Brien's Love and Monsters to Ethan Hawke's Predestination , The Demon Disorder centers on Graham, Jake and Phillip, three brothers who become estranged following the death of their father due to mysterious circumstances. When strange occurrences begin happening on their family farm, the brothers must confront the trauma of their past, as well as a more sinister presence lurking.

The Demon Disorder's Story Has A Familiar Start & Ends Blandly

The plot ultimately feels too similar to another shudder title.

Starting off as an attempt at meaningful family drama, one of The Demon Disorder 's biggest flaws is that it's ultimately too familiar for the family horror subgenre. The concept of siblings grappling with the death of a parent is one many films have explored before, particularly when that death is drenched in a mystery that may or may not be supernatural in nature. One of the more notable films it reminded me of is fellow Shudder title, Bryan Bertino's The Dark and the Wicked , in which two siblings attempt to care for their ailing father after their mother's suicide.

Even once the movie elects to deal away with its ambiguity and get right to its demonic horror, The Demon Disorder still feels largely too familiar and predictable.

Frequently flashing back to their father's worsening condition, The Demon Disorder tries to present the possibility that he was simply mentally ill. This possibility is upended at every turn, though, with clear flashes of his being possessed. Whether it's biting the head off of chickens or roaring in demonic fashion, Boyle and co-writer Toby Osborne can never quite land on the balance of whether to present a gradual buildup to its horror elements, or jump right in to create a terrifying atmosphere.

Even once the movie elects to deal away with its ambiguity and get right to its demonic horror, The Demon Disorder is largely too predictable. Having kept its focus on four characters for nearly the entirety of its runtime, the introduction of other characters becomes an obvious setup for a body count in the third act. Meanwhile, the gradual shift to a demon-on-the-loose formula raises some issues of believability and the movie's ending leaves far too many questions unanswered.

The Demon Disorder's Practical Effects Are Appropriately Gruesome

Boyle's past in effects and prosthetics pays off tenfold.

While the story may underwhelm, The Demon Disorder shines in its use of practical effects. Even as he went to work on such blockbuster features as Peter Jackson's King Kong and George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones , Boyle has clearly had an affection for monstrous creatures and bringing them to life on screen. Before The Demon Disorder , he also spotlighted this in a variety of horror movies, including the cult classic Black Sheep and Daybreakers .

Birthed out of the armpit of a possessed person, its creation feels like the most haunting thing since the Alien franchise's chestbuster sequences

Coming into The Demon Disorder , Boyle makes thoroughly effective use of practical effects to bring the demon and the various stages of possession to life. The subtle blend of prosthetics and viscous liquids for those possessed adds a real visceral nature to their transformations. The depiction of a variety of animal carcasses that have fallen victim to those possessed also makes for some appropriately haunting imagery, keeping the gory tone of the movie high.

The other effect that is truly chilling to watch is the actual arrival of the demon. Birthed out of the armpit of a possessed person, its creation feels like the most haunting thing since the Alien franchise's chestbuster sequences , leaving my stomach churning at the sight. It also raises the question of how exactly the character it came from survived the ordeal. When we finally get a full-on look at the creature, it may not prove as terrifying as when it was slowly transforming, but it fits into the emotional nature of the finale.

Dirk Hunter & John Noble Keep Us Gripped To The Demon Disorder

The rest of the cast deliver everything from serviceable to strong performances.

The other major benefit working in the film's favor is the performances of stars Dirk Hunter as Jake, the brother on the verge of alcoholism as he grapples with his family's past and present hauntings, and John Noble as the trio's late possessed father, George. Up to this point, Hunter has primarily been an Australian mainstay, and the movie feels primed to introduce him to wider audiences as he delivers a powerful mix of pain and sardonic humor amidst the terror of the story.

Noble, on the other hand, nicely pulls from his familiar wheelhouse of playing villainous or mysterious characters, whether it be Henry Parrish in Fox's Sleepy Hollow or voicing Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Knight . His casting does occasionally take away from the more emotional scenes between George and his sons in the film's flashbacks as we prepare for his turn to evil, much in the way Jack Nicholson's The Shining casting signposted Jack's devolution. But thanks to his skillfully haunting turn in his possessed state, Noble remains a stellar choice for the role.

While Hunter and Noble may be the standout performers, that doesn't mean the rest of the cast aren't solid, as Christian Willis nicely captures the traumatic fear of Graham and Christian Cottier displays an interesting indifference to the haunting. But as they all lack the benefit of a powerful script to back up their performances, the movie's gruesome set pieces and grounded cast can never quite overcome the feeling we've seen this story one too many times before.

The Demon Disorder begins streaming on Shudder on September 6.

The Demon Disorder (2024) - Poster

The Demon Disorder tells the story of Graham, Jake and Phillip Reilly and their deceased father. Their pasts collide when a family secret is discovered, leading their father's garage to become the site of revenge from beyond the grave.

  • The practical effects are rather grisly and effective.
  • Dirk Hunter and John Noble deliver excellent performances.
  • The story feels too familiar, predictable and inconsistent.
  • The movie lacks any actual scares or meaningful emotional beats.
  • The movie ends on a surprisingly bland note.

the demon disorder

Australia is a hotbed of burgeoning horror talent. Joel Anderson ( Lake Mungo ), Sean Byrne ( The Loved Ones ), Jennifer Kent ( The Babadook ), the Philippou Brothers ( Talk to Me ), and so many more talented filmmakers hail from the land down under. So based on the country’s impressive track record, I was eager to check out Australian filmmaker Steven Boyle ’s directorial debut,  The Demon Disorder . Though Boyle may not quite reach the heights of the aforementioned filmmakers, his first feature is poignant and chilling, and features exquisite practical effects.

The Demon Disorder  follows brothers Jake (Dirk Hunter), Phillip (Charles Cottier), and Graham (Christian Willis). The trio are reeling from past trauma stemming from the death of their father (John Noble). But each sibling has compartmentalized the heartbreaking ordeal, rather than facing their inner turmoil head-on. Try as they might to outrun it, their past catches up with them, forcing each to face their fears and battle a malignant supernatural presence in the process.

The film works so well for me because the central trio is believable as grief-stricken brothers being eaten alive by their shared experiences. Their interpersonal dynamic conveys years of unspoken resentment. We see that manifest through sideways glances, tone of voice, and other subtle indicators. Each wears their pain on their face, but none of them has the emotional maturity to broach the subject and vocalize those feelings. The further we get into the narrative, the more we realize the brothers’ inaction regarding their emotional well-being is tearing them apart from the inside out, both figuratively and literally.

The dynamic between the core characters serves the film well in more ways than one. Several of the situations the central trio gets wrapped up in are completely unhinged and utterly unrealistic. That aspect may have rendered  The Demon Disorder  unwatchable with less capable performers in the lead roles. However, each of the key players was convincing enough that I bought in fully and accepted the unlikely narrative developments without question. We often take that piece for granted with big-budget releases. But performances are sometimes hit or miss with lower-budget indie fare. I’m pleased to say that, despite taking a scrappy approach, Boyle has assembled a competent cast capable of selling the fantastical conceit within.

One might be tempted to accuse the filmmakers of retreading familiar ground. To be fair, they do. We’ve seen grief and trauma juxtaposed alongside a monster metaphor time and again since Hereditary  popularized those themes. But the poignant emotional core on display in  The Demon Disorder  kept me engaged for the duration.

One additional element that helped keep my attention is the placement of several well-timed jump scares. I am an unabashed fan of jump scares and I’m pleased to report that most of them are on point here. As an effective jump scare should, they present unexpectedly and coincide with harsh musical stings likely to keep the viewer ill at ease. There are a couple that I saw coming in advance. But I still reacted, despite the predictability factor.

Jump scares aside, I was also really taken with the practical effects work. There are moments of stomach-turning body horror that are utterly repulsive. The effects are gorgeously rendered and call back to the heyday of practical creature design. The FX work here is next-level. It’s grotesque in every way and often uncomfortable to lay eyes on.  But it’s so masterfully rendered that I couldn’t bear to miss a second of the action in all its gory glory.

I suspect Boyle’s background as an effects artist was a tremendous benefit to the production. Though he isn’t credited with any effects work here, it’s likely he knew exactly how to assemble a dream team. And it paid off in spades. The body horror designs within are reminiscent of the early days of David Cronenberg.

Equally noteworthy is the set design. The farmhouse where much of the film’s first half takes place is painstakingly rendered. There’s grit and grime on the surfaces that looks like it has accumulated over the course of decades. Additionally, the walls are painted a sickly shade that is anything but disarming. The set lighting brings those walls to life with an unnerving glow that reminds me of a low-rent skilled care facility, circa 1987. That made existing in the dwelling supremely uncomfortable.

All in all,  The Demon Disorder  marks a promising debut from director Steven Boyle. The performances, creature design, and effectively placed jump scares make for an enjoyable viewing experience. I am left curious to see what Boyle does next. If you’re eager to check the film out, you can scope it on Shudder beginning  September 6, 2024 .

‘Frightful’ Netflix horror movie based on true story lands with powerhouse cast

Netflix ’s latest horror movie The Deliverance, starring Mo’Nique and Glenn Close, has arrived on the streaming platform to mixed reviews.

The ‘terrifying’ psychological horror , from Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels, follows Pittsburgh-based single parent Ebony Jackson (Grammy winner Andra Day) who moves her family to a new home for a fresh start, but something evil already lives there.

The exorcism tale, based on a true story, also stars Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin as one of Ebony’s children Nate, alongside siblings Shante (Demi Singleton) and Dre (Anthony B. Jenkins) while Fatal Attraction actor Glenn plays her mother Alberta moves in during her recovery from cancer .

And it seems the real-life filming process was just as spiritually taxing as the plot.

‘We had people praying over us constantly, from the time we had someone that did deliverances there, praying for us, over us constantly every day. Glenn [Close] wasn’t spiritual when she walked into this, and she walked out a different person,’ Precious filmmaker Lee told IndieWire .

As such, Lee appointed an apostle to anoint the set every day to protect the space and cast.

‘I’ve never seen that on a set. I’ve never witnessed this on a set. Never had somebody talking tongues before you start working.

‘I loved it. I loved every single minute of it, every minute of it. I think it really did inform each day when he was there, and we did that. I felt protected,’ Glenn remarked about the unconventional ritual to Bloody Disgusting .

The film has debuted at 40% on Rotten Tomatoes with some critics not entirely convinced of the plot, even with powerhouse performances.

IndieWire accused the ‘pretty painful’ film of an ‘overwritten script and some nightmarishly bad effects’.

Anthony B Jenkins as Andre in The Deliverance, crouched down near a large crack in the ground in a dark room

This was echoed by Hollywood Reporter which described it as ‘too choppy an affair’ with a conclusion that entered ‘mawkish and disappointingly cartoonish territory.’

On the flip side, there was plenty of praise for both The United States vs Billie Holiday star and Lee’s first attempt at the horror genre.

‘Daniels punches horror elements into full gear, and while there’s a randomizer sense to everything, frights abound, and there’s a mercilessness that bites down hard,’ Collider wrote .

Also adding: ‘Enough works as a haunting fight for survival against monsters and prejudice, proving Daniels’ versatility behind the camera.’

Elsewhere, Screenrant noted : ‘If not for the believable performances by Day and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor [Reverend Bernice James] especially, I would have laughed out loud at the astonishing tackiness of it all.’

The New York Times added : ‘Lee Daniels frees his actors to exorcise their demons with audacious performances that rank among the most memorable of their careers.’

What is the true story The Deliverance is based on?

The Deliverance is loosely based on the true story of the Latoya Ammons case which traces back to Indianapolis in 2011.

When the Ammons family moved into a new home alarm bells started ringing when their porch started being flooded with big black flies, no matter how they tried to combat them.

‘This is not normal. We killed them and killed them and killed them, but they kept coming back,’ Ammons’ mother, Rosa Campbell recalled thinking, per IndyStar .

Caleb McLaughlin as Nate, Anthony B. Jenkins as Andre and Mo'Nique as Cynthia Henry in The Deliverance, sat in a cream living room

After both Rosa and Latoya started hearing strange noises in the home, things escalated in March 2012 when Ammons’ 12-year-old daughter started levitating on her bed, according to the family.

Both started reaching out to churches and clairvoyants for help but despite the measures they put in place, such as erecting an altar in the basement, demons continued to possess the family.

After a series of escalating events that resulted in the hospitalisation of her sons, the case was handed over to the police, citing possible child abuse and neglect according to a DCS report.

After a number of police visits to the home, officers including Gary Police Captain Charles Austin started to become unsettled by the disturbing energy in the house, at one point describing it as a ‘portal to hell’.

They even eventually attended an exorcism at the house as per police reports.

After a few exorcisms, led by Father Mike Maginot, the hauntings finally ended in June 2012, making the family’s nightmare over.

The Deliverance is available to watch on Netflix now.

On the whole, 1920: Horrors Of The Heart is an ordinary fare which has the 1920 brand as its biggest plus point. Its performance at the ticket windows will be average because of its weak promotion and its routineness. Commercial viability of the project should not be a problem in view of the fact that a good part of the investment has been recovered from sale of digital, satellite and audio rights.

One notable characteristic of films produced by Vikram Bhatt is their exceptional music, but this horror drama fails to impress in that aspect as well. The VFX effects come across as juvenile, raising questions about how a film can possess such subpar visuals in this day and age. 1920: Horrors of the Heart serves as an incubation center for Vikram Bhatt’s daughter, but unfortunately, she fails to seize this opportunity. The film falls far short of its intended goal of delivering genuine scares.

Mahesh Bhatt and Suhrita Das’ story is novel and different from the rest of the horror films of Bollywood. Instead of the heroine getting possessed, here it’s she who causes the madness and has shades of grey. Mahesh Bhatt and Suhrita Das’ screenplay sadly doesn’t do justice to the plot. Shweta Bothra’s dialogues are too filmy.Krishna Bhatt’s direction is not up to the mark. She handles a few scenes with panache. But otherwise, her execution is outdated. It doesn’t seem to be a film of 2023 and seems like this is a film made 2 decades ago.On the whole, 1920: HORRORS OF THE HEART boasts of a great story but fails to impress due to outdated execution and far too many loose ends.

Set in a fictional town, Kosha Hills, the film lacks the simplest of logic throughout€” especially when Avikas character spits rotten rat and doesnt seem to have any association with the plot. With the evident green screen edit and visual design, 1920 Horrors of The Heart is an uneasy watch. If you are up for a crunchy cockroach treat, 1920 Horrors of The Heart is definitely for you. After all, a laughter session of 122 minutes is what you need after a long tiring week.

Very good movie . I like this movie. I have never seen such a horror movie with such great actors. This deserves an Oscar . Best movie of the century. I watched it with my girlfriend moomal and she was so scared after watching the movie, so she vomitted all the dinner she had. But I patiently waited for the movie to end as it was so interesting. Best vfx in the world. I also learned many magic tricks from the movie like, band khulaaa band khulaaaa. I suggest each and every one to watch this movie atleast once, this is a masterpiece in real manner.

Mr Vikram Bhatt and Ms Krishna bhatt have truly delivered a captivating masterpiece with their latest horror film. From it's hauntingly beautiful music to the exceptional performances by the cast, every aspect of this movie is crafted with sheer brilliance.

vedikahappyminds 437 days ago

All over movie is okay... Story is very stereotypical and screenplay, dialogues and vfx can be far better... casting is perfect... actors did kinda well... Ketaki Kulkarni nailed it as Aditi in her debut film only.... horror scenes is the only worth watching element in the whole movie....

Can “1920: Horrors Of The Heart” Make You Feel The Fear?

' src=

Let me narrate to you the tale of the vengeful heart with 1920: Horrors Of The Heart . As Meghna’s father commits suicide, she seeks to avenge his death from her deceitful mother. As Meghna goes to her mother’s mansion to seek vengeance, unexpected things happen which make her aware of a hidden truth. Written by Mahesh Bhatt, produced by Vikram Bhatt, and directed by Krishna Bhatt, 1920: Horrors Of The Heart was released across theaters on June 23, 2023.

To check out my full narration of the story, click here . In the meantime, check out my honest opinion!

Indian television actress Avika Gor plays Meghna in her Bollywood debut 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

1920: Horrors Of The Heart Official Trailer:

movie review 1920 horrors of the heart

Avika Gor as Meghna and Danish Pandor as Arjun in 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

The story of 1920: Horrors Of The Heart is captivating. A girl trying to seek revenge for the wrong done by her deceitful mother to her late father, and later her finding out that it was her father who was the actual villain is for sure engrossing. However, even if the story is entertaining, the way the filmmakers have presented this thrilling and chilling drama on-screen is not up to the mark. If I would have made this film, I would have loaded it with twists and turns that would have instilled suspense in the minds of the audience with every passing moment. Still, the dialogues in 1920: Horrors Of The Heart are vengeful and impactful at the same time. The movie indeed has powerful dialogues by Avika Gor who, as Meghna, is bent upon avenging the death of her father.

movie review 1920 horrors of the heart

Randheer Rai plays Meghna’s father in 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

The best parts of 1920: Horrors Of The Heart are its cinematography and songs. The dark and mystical visuals coupled with the old-fashioned interiors of the 1920s era created a marvelous viewing experience. And the songs! They are extraordinarily beautiful and melodious. They sound like honey to the ears and I believe, 1920: Horrors Of The Heart has the best songs that Bollywood has ever produced. The magical melodious voices of singers Raj Barman, Palak Muchhal, and Papon will instill a heavenly experience that will make you take a deep dive into an ocean of emotions.

movie review 1920 horrors of the heart

Barkha Bisht as Meghna’s mother in 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

After all, it is Bollywood! Bollywood has a very different approach to making horror films compared to Hollywood. Mainly, it is the Bhatt family who is involved in making horror movies in Bollywood. And the main substance in Bhatt’s horror movies is sex! The Bhatt family’s obsession with sex in films dates back decades. I know this because I have been watching their horror movies since my childhood, and all of them have steamy sex scenes.

movie review 1920 horrors of the heart

Rahul Dev as Shantanu in 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

Just like any other Bhatt horror movie, 1920: Horrors Of The Heart directed by Vikram Bhatt’s daughter Krishna Bhatt contains steamy scenes between Avika Gor who plays Meghna, and Deepak Pandor who plays her boyfriend Arjun. I mean, why? You tag a movie as a “family” horror-drama, and then how could you think you can watch such explicit scenes along with your family which may comprise your mom, dad, brother, and sister?

I have seen Avika Gor in Hindi television serials since she was a child actor. She is well known for playing the role of the child bride “Anandi” in the Indian television series “Balika Vadhu”. And now she is all grown up and it was shocking for me to see her in her debut Bollywood movie giving all steamy scenes with her co-actor.

More than the sex scenes, the worst part of 1920: Horrors Of The Heart is its screenplay. Even if the story was thrilling, the filmmakers just couldn’t present it properly because of which the essence of horror, suspense, and thrill was lost as the screenplay proceeded.

movie review 1920 horrors of the heart

Ketaki Kulkarni as Aditi in 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

There were funny instances too which should never be there if you are making a genuine horror movie. Firstly, Meghna’s father’s spirit (Randheer Rai) looked just like an ordinary man. When you are portraying him as a ghost, the audience expects you to give him a freaky look which can scare the shit out of anybody. In one scene, it can be seen that Meghna calls her father’s spirit and he seemed very dejected. Then she catches hold of his cheeks with her hand and stares at him and said, “Father, you need to seek revenge for what Mom has done to you!” This was hilarious. Does anybody talk to a ghost in this manner? Deepak Pandor is an unknown struggler in Bollywood. I have never heard of him before and his performance is equally bad. I mean, he is presented as a powerful sorcerer in this movie and his personality does not seem to fit the role. Barkha Bisht as Meghna’s mother Radhika, and Rahul Dev as Radhika’s boyfriend Shantanu looked convincing in their roles. The ghostly makeup of child actor Ketaki Kulkarni who plays Aditi was not up to the mark. If you look closely, you can very well make out that her face has been applied with makeup to look evil and ghostly. That really spoils the horror essence. Even if this film has a short run duration of 2 hours, I just cannot praise its editing as the screenplay and direction were poor.

The Verdict:

movie review 1920 horrors of the heart

A still from 1920: Horrors Of The Heart

If you ask me, I would say that the element of horror is very much missing from 1920: Horrors Of The Heart. The film fails to scare the audience which is expected from any genuine horror movie. If only Krishna Bhatt had given more effort in formulating the screenplay in a better manner. Vikram Bhatt has been making horror movies for ages and it seems that his approach to making horror movies has remained stagnant with time. Now he has passed on his directorial crown to his daughter Krishna Bhatt and it seems that she too is continuing her dad’s legacy of making outdated and boring horror movies that fail to instill fear. The lead character Meghna played by Avika Gor looked confused and irritated throughout the movie which made the viewing experience even more unpleasant. The astonishing part about this movie is that both Danish Pandor and Randheer Rai are of the same age in real life, but Danish plays Meghna’s boyfriend whereas Randheer plays her dead father.

1920 is a film franchise that has been running for decades. The first movie, Vikram Bhatt’s “1920” was released in 2008, then came “1920: Evil Returns” in 2012, following that “1920: London” in 2016, then suddenly the name changed to “1921” in 2018, and finally, “1920: Horrors Of The Heart” was released in 2023. Bhatt’s obsession with the 1920 franchise will continue but the sad part is that if you compare these horror movies with the amazing horror movies that they make in Hollywood, you will agree to the fact that they simply fail in the name of instilling fear.

If you have seen some of the earlier released horror movies of Vikram Bhatt like Haunted, you would have fallen from your chair. Haunted showed the hero going one-on-one with an evil spirit in hand-to-hand combat! That was hilarious! You have to see it to believe it! So, these Bollywood-style horror movies made by Vikram Bhatt have action too. Of course, Bollywood, at times, can never part ways with action, even if it is a horror film. Anything for the sake of entertainment!

1920: Horrors Of The Heart Movie Review – Avika Gor’s Bollywood Debut, As FORMULAIC As It Gets!

1920: Horrors Of The Heart marks the Bollywood debut of Balika Vadhu star Avika Gor . However, this flick is as formulaic as it gets, stuffed to the brim with all the horror cliches and laughable VFX. Has nothing new to offer.

Read Full 1920 Horrors Of The Heart Movie Review –

Rating – 2.5/5

Director – Krishna Bhatt

Cast – Avika Gor, Barkha Bisht, Ketaki Kulkarni, Amit Behl

Runtime – 2h 2m

1920 Horrors of the Heart movie

Meghna (Avika Gor) is devastated when her father dies by suicide. A hideous man with a half-burnt body skulks around in the shadows at the funeral and even haunts Meghna’s dreams.

1920 Horrors of the Heart

Meghna then finds out that her father’s dying wish is to take vengeance against Meghna’s mother (Barkha Bisht) – who allegedly ran away, abandoning them to poverty. Meghna vows to the vengeful spirit of her father that she’ll fulfill his revenge.

1920 Horrors of the Heart trailer

She arrives at her mother’s palatial mansion and discovers that the latter is happily married to the aristocrat Shantanu (Rahul Dev) , with a sweet 16-year-old daughter. A resentful Meghna then targets her innocent step-sister (Ketaki Kulkarni), setting in motion a chain of events that make her mother’s life hell!

What Do We Think:

1920- Horrors of the Heart

Balika Vadhu star  Avika Gor  makes her Bollywood debut with 1920: Horrors Of The Heart. This addition to the 1920 horror franchise is as formulaic as it gets and has nothing new to offer.

1920: Horrors Of The Heart is quite an outdated film with laughable VFX and an extremely predictable plotline. It is saturated with all the horror cliches which get monotonous after a while. The jumpscares don’t elicit any terror, in fact, some will make you chuckle unintentionally. The excess of CGI is tacky and the visual of the half-burnt Pandit is comical and straight out of Aahat.

1920 Horrors of the Heart

That being said, the 1st half is at least somewhat promising and could have had a better impact if the emotional core of the story was developed strongly. But the emotion remains surface level, sacrificed in favour of cringe melodrama.

1920 Horrors of the Heart

After the possession plot starts, it is standard horror fare as usual, nothing too exciting or horrifying happens. It’s all – been there done that . The climax slightly redeems the passé plotline though.

Avika Gor is decent enough in some scenes but resorts to hammy acting in the emotional sequences. The chemistry between Avika and her love interest played by Danish Pandor is lacklustre. Their misplaced sex scene is awkward and obviously just meant to titillate the audience.

1920: Horrors Of The Heart Movie Review

Barkha Bisht is underutilized in this horror flick, Danish Pandor is rigid in his performance and Rahul Dev is just there. Ketaki Kulkarni-Avika Gor’s dynamic is cute and should have been fleshed out richly but it is glossed over quickly.

Horros of the Heart continues the saga of tacky, era-inappropriate costumes prevalent in the 1920 franchise. But the music is good, especially the Lori song.

Hit Or Miss:

Go catch this flick at the theatres if you’re extremely bored and want an easy, no-brainer horror flick. Otherwise, this one’s a pass.

A low attempt like "1920" (2008) became a sleeper hit and then began a series, even though not all films have been that successful. 1920 Horrors Of The Heart comes with the ambition of reviving the franchise, but rather gets possessed by a horrible screenplay, low standard vision, and daily soap-standard filmmaking.
