IEA Launches Dear Marguerite National Essay Contest presented by Lettie Teague

The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) launches the Dear Marguerite National Essay Contest presented by Lettie Teague. This IEA initiative is a partnership with author and Wall Street Journalist Lettie Teague, along with Trafalgar Square Books, to offer a unique opportunity for youth members in grades 4-12 to engage in creative writing.

The contest pays tribute to the legacy of Marguerite Henry, encouraging participants to explore various themes related to equestrian life, horse welfare, and historical horse figures as a celebration of Teague’s new biography of Henry.  Dear Readers and Riders: The Beloved Books, Faithful Fans, and Hidden Private Life of Marguerite Henry  will be published by Trafalgar Square Books in the spring of 2024. “IEA riders are exactly the readers for whom Marguerite wrote her books: equestrians dedicated to the love and care of the horse,” says Teague.

A winner will be awarded to both Middle School and Upper School participants, along with Honorable Mentions. Winners of the contest will receive attractive prizes, including cash prizes of $500.00 for Middle School and $1,000.00 for Upper School, an autographed advanced copy of  Dear Readers and Riders: The Beloved Books, Faithful Fans, and Hidden Private Life of Marguerite Henry , and a Breyer Misty Gift Set. Additionally, their essays will be published in the 2024 IEA Hunt Seat National Finals program celebrating their creative efforts.

“Lettie’s support of IEA programming through her Hunt Seat Supplemental Grant, as well as her commitment to young rider development is invaluable,” says Kathryn Dando, IEA Resource Development Director. “IEA is so excited to see our students’ creativity blossom!” The Dear Marguerite National Essay contest aims to inspire a new generation of equestrian writers and enthusiasts.

For more information about the contest and how to participate, visit:  https://conta.cc/3RGDvQL

ABOUT THE INTERSCHOLASTIC EQUESTRIAN ASSOCIATION The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting lifelong involvement in equestrian athletics by offering a unique draw-based competition format for young riders in grades 4-12, allowing them to compete without owning a horse or riding equipment, providing greater affordability and access to the sport. IEA has over 14,900 members across the United States participating in Hunt Seat, Western and Dressage disciplines. For more information, visit  www.RideIEA.org

ABOUT LETTIE TEAGUE Lettie Teague has been the wine columnist of  The Wall Street Journal  since 2010. Before joining the Journal, Teague was the executive wine editor and columnist for  Food & Wine  magazine. She is the author of two books,  Wine in Words  and Educating Peter, and co-author and illustrator of Fear of Wine. She has won three James Beard Awards, including the M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. More importantly, Teague’s equestrian life began when she was nine, the same year she read her first Marguerite Henry book ( Born to Trot ). Like Henry, she grew up in the Midwest and aspired to be a writer.

Teague is based in New Jersey, which has one of the highest horse populations in U.S. As Teague notes, it may be called the “Garden State,” but it (really) should be titled “The Horsiest State.”

ABOUT TRAFALGAR SQUARE BOOKS Trafalgar Square Books, and its online bookstore HorseandRiderBooks.com, is a small business based on a farm in rural Vermont. We published our first horse book, Centered Riding by Sally Swift, in 1985, and since then have continued to strive to produce high-quality equestrian books and videos “for the good of the horse.”

Department of Economics

First year economics student wins the iea's monetary policy essay prize 2022.

Header image for article

We are very proud to announce that for the second time running, Warwick Economics student is the winner of the Monetary Policy Essay 2022 competition organised by the Institute of Economics Affairs (IEA) and the Institute of International Monetary Research (IIMR).

Guillermo Sagnier, first year BSc Economics student, took the top prize in the IEA and the IIMR essay competition 2022 which was launched in October 2021 with two questions: "Does inflation matter? And will the current inflation upturn be transitory or not?" The submissions were judged on their presentation, command of theory, the relevance of the questions and persuasiveness of the argument.

The Monetary Policy Essay Final took place in-person at the Vinson Centre (Buckingham) on 3 March 2022. Guillermo Sagnier took the first prize of £500, Irakli Imnaishvili and Aislin Rees tied in second place.

This is the second time that Warwick Economics student got the top prize in this competition. Last year the winner was Warwick Economics final year student Gustaf Dillner (BSc Economics, Politics and International Studies).

Guillermo only joined Warwick in September 2021 on the three year BSc Economics programme. He is Spanish and, for three years, he lived in Chile, which sparked his interest in economics.

We congratulate Guillermo on this fantastic achievement in his first year and wish him further successes.

We wanted to find out more about his studies here and what this achievement means to him and here is what he told us:

What made you enter this competition?

Being passionate about macroeconomics and understanding the world around us, I was curious to analyse why western economies had experienced significantly above-target inflation rates in 2021, whilst Asia had not witnessed such surge. Given supply chain disruptions and bottlenecks have affected globally, what explains such difference? When researching recent monetary trends and finding this essay competition, I decided to dive into the question.

Briefly describe the content of your essay and the arguments you used

I claimed the current inflation upturn in Europe and North America is a result of the extraordinary growth in broad money supply, caused by QE, ultra-low interest rates and the partial monetisation of fiscal deficits. The creation of excess money balances, mainly across financial institutions, has translated to a rise in asset prices (equities and real estate) and subsequently strong recovery of aggregate demand. Over time, this has led to a rapid increase in the price of goods and services, which will persist beyond 2022 (given still-high money supply growth rates and likely gains in the velocity of money) and further squeeze real incomes.

Tell us about the prize ceremony you attended?

The top ten entries from around 200 submissions were invited to the final at the Vinson Centre in Buckingham. The essay competition was open to all undergraduate and sixth form students and, remarkably, the second and third prizes were given to outstanding high school pupils. The session involved a ten-minute presentation in front of a panel of experts in monetary economics, followed by a five-minute Q&A of broad questions. It was great practice for my upcoming macroeconomics test!

What was your prize and how are you going to spend it?

I was awarded £500 and summer internships at the Institute of Economic Affairs and at the Institute of International Monetary Research. I will certainly not keep it as cash and move to inflation hedges!

What have been the highlights of your degree course at Warwick so far?

Although I am still a first-year student, my time here at Warwick has been thoroughly enjoyable. The highlights of the course would be how varied the discipline is: from economic history to statistics, you gain a wide range of skills. Campus life and societies are exceptional too and, as an international student, make up a very well-rounded experience.

What is your favourite module in Year 1 of our course?

EC108 Macroeconomics provides an overview of how national indicators such as employment, output or inflation are determined and correlate with each other. Although there are alternative models beyond mainstream economics (like the Quantity Theory of Money), the depth of the analysis and modelling has far exceeded my expectations.

What are your career plans?

I am very interested in monetary policy and would look forward to engaging with forecasting and central bank policymaking in the future. I am also curious about finance, especially asset and wealth management.

Topic Overview

According to Cornell Law School, civil liberties are:

  • Freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution (primarily from the First Amendment ). They are natural rights which are inherent to each person. While they are commonly referred to as " rights ," civil liberties actually operate as restraints on how the government can treat its citizens . As such, the First Amendment's language (" congress shall make no law") explicitly prohibits the government from infringing on liberties, such as the freedom of speech .
  • Civil liberties are constitutionally protected freedoms.
  • Civil rights are claims built upon legislation .
  • A violation of civil rights affords the injured party a right to legal action against the violator. For example, the freedom of religion is recognized as both a civil right and civil liberty; it is protected under the Constitution from government infringement (liberty) as well as under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 from being the basis of discriminatory practices.

Approximately 33,000 Japanese Americans served in the US Armed Forces during World War II. Many of them voluntarily enlisted despite having their civil liberties infringed upon by the US government with the execution of Executive Order 9066 in 1942. This order forcibly incarcerated around 122,000 men, women and children in relocation centers in the interior of the United States.

The majority of those 33,000 served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team or as linguists with the Military Intelligence Service. The 100th/442nd remains the most decorated unit for its size and duration of service in US Army history. “Go for Broke” means risking everything to win big. This was the motto adopted by these units.

Announcing the TSL 2023 International Student Essay Competition Winners!

TSL chose ‘Green Jobs’ as our theme for the 2023 competition to explore global post Covid 19 recovery plans to ‘build back greener’, as well as recognising that an increasing number of young people want to work in roles which will benefit society and our planet, and work for businesses that are environmentally sustainable. However, research has shown that many young people are unsure how to turn that passion into a career and employers are already encountering green skills shortages.

Students (primary age 7-11 and secondary age 12-18) were invited to write an essay outlining their ideas on “How young people can be better supported to thrive in green jobs?”

This year, we received 1,215 essay entries from 65 countries and the Essay Competition Winners were announced at the International Essay and Debates Awards Ceremonies on the 7th & 8th June.

Primary Schools

iea student essay competition 2023

Ahel Saha, age 9 from King’s College School, Cambridge, UK is the recipient of this year’s first prize. Ahel’s essay highlighted several ways to support the young people throughout their educational years through collaboration between school, parents, community, government, charitable organisations and universities. Ideas which impressed the judges included opportunities to plan and execute green projects in school, extending the curriculum to learn about theories of sustainable living and planning for green jobs and creation of apprenticeships and taster sessions.

The top prize winners are listed in the table below. See our full list of awards here.

Secondary Schools

iea student essay competition 2023

The first prize secondary and overall Grand Prize Winner was awarded to Alexander Kameoka from Fukuoka International School in Japan. The judges were impressed by Alex’s essay which focused on a solution centred around removing the key barriers faced by young people trying to enter jobs in the green economy; lack of capital, lack of skills and a lack of knowledge of green jobs.

Here are the top prize winners for this category.

Congratulations to all the students who took part and shared their ideas on “How young people can be better supported to thrive in green jobs”.
