As a way for the gospel to be restored the United States was the proper host because it was open territory The only reason that the United States was a proper host for the gospel was because the new government established believed in people having their inherent and inalienable rights The people of the United States now have the agency to choose their own life and are given that right when this country was born The restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the founding of the United States are connected in more ways than just by coincidence It was by the power of God that it came to be at the perfect time and place It would have been impossible without God s guidance in establishing America to restore the gospel under the governments that existed at the time such as the Constitutional monarchy that was in place for the Spanish and the British While studying the Doctrine and Covenants I have learned that even with the perfect place and precise timing of the restoration it was still a very difficult time for the Latter Day Saints Had the United States of America not been through the revolution for their freedom the colonies would still be under church state rules that did not want for new churches to be formed And if no new churches would be established then Joseph Smith would not have been able to play the role that He was meant to by trying to decide if there was a true church on the earth The Revolutionary War and the rebellion of the colonists from the Church of England played a key role in the restoration of the gospel

  • Persuasive Essay: A persuasive essay is a very different essay when compared to an expository essay. In a persuasive essay, you will try to convince someone to take your point of view. Your thesis statement needs to make it very clear that you have an opinion on something, and then you need to use your body paragraph to support that opinion.
  • Descriptive Essay: In a descriptive essay, he will try to describe something. Descriptive writing is more likely to focus on specific aspects of a certain topic instead of the entire topic itself. The body paragraphs need to be very logical, and your language should be vivid. Your reader should be able to picture something in his or her mind as your essay moves forward.
  • Narrative Essay: The final type of essay is called a narrative essay. This is like a story. You may include anecdotes, emotions, and various insights to make the essay more interesting. Consumerism and the Conformity of Consumer Culture

This essay about consumerism discusses its pervasive influence on modern society, shaping identities and driving desires for material goods and trend adherence. It explores how consumerism promotes conformity and comparison, leading to dissatisfaction and a relentless pursuit of more. The essay critiques the environmental and social impacts of consumerism and advocates for conscious consumption, authenticity, and a shift towards defining success with well-being in mind, encouraging discussions on sustainable alternatives.

How it works

In the complex landscape of today’s world, consumerism stands out as a powerful influence, intertwining itself with the very essence of our daily lives and molding our identities and ambitions. It propels us into a vortex of desires, pushing us to find satisfaction in acquiring material goods, staying current with the latest trends, and embracing the allure of constant newness. Yet, in this rush of consumer activity, there’s a more subtle but pervasive trend: the uniformity dictated by consumer culture.

At its heart, consumerism relies on conformity. It subtly coerces people toward a uniform definition of success and happiness, marked by accumulating goods and chasing after status symbols. This silent pressure subtly persuades us that our value depends on our possessions and the image we present to the world.

A clear example of consumer conformity is evident in the rise and fall of various trends and fashions. Whether it’s the newest tech device, style trend, or lifestyle fad, people often feel driven to adapt their preferences and actions to match what is currently celebrated or accepted. This drive for conformity can stifle personal expression, drowning it out in a sea of communal consumption.

Additionally, consumer culture instigates a mindset of comparison and rivalry. Surrounded by images of lavish wealth and luxury lifestyles, people are continually faced with idealized versions of success tied directly to material wealth. This constant comparison breeds feelings of inadequacy and compels people to continuously strive for more, in a never-ending cycle of trying to keep up with societal benchmarks.

However, beneath the polished surface of consumer culture, there’s often a profound sense of void and disillusionment. Despite the promises of happiness through consumption, many find themselves trapped in a loop of longing and dissatisfaction, always chasing the next purchase or experience for a temporary sense of fulfillment. Thus, consumerism often acts as a poor substitute for deeper, more meaningful sources of satisfaction, perpetuating a culture of endless desire.

Moreover, the drive for conformity in consumer culture exacts a significant toll on society and the environment. The unyielding quest for growth and profits leads to environmental destruction, depletion of resources, and climate change, while also deepening social inequalities and perpetuating global injustices. The true cost of our consumer habits is often obscured, revealing a darker side of exploitation and unsustainability behind the consumerist façade.

Confronted with these issues, it is crucial to reconsider our engagement with consumer culture and redefine what constitutes true success and fulfillment. This involves shifting focus from mere acquisition of material goods to embracing a broader concept of well-being that includes social, environmental, and spiritual aspects.

A possible route to transformation involves promoting conscious consumption. By motivating people to make thoughtful choices regarding their purchases, and to consider the social and environmental consequences of their consumption patterns, we can foster a more sustainable and fair consumer culture. This could include supporting ethical and eco-friendly brands, minimizing waste through deliberate consumption, and pushing for policies that favor social and environmental justice.

Additionally, nurturing a culture that prizes authenticity and individuality can counteract the conformity inherent in consumer culture. By valuing diversity and promoting genuine self-expression, we can create environments where individuals feel encouraged to resist consumer pressures and chart their own courses toward true fulfillment.

Ultimately, the uniformity found in consumer culture mirrors deeper societal norms and values. Addressing this issue fully requires initiating broader discussions about the systems that sustain consumerism and exploring alternative ways of organizing economies and societies that prioritize human and ecological well-being.

In sum, consumerism and the conformity it fosters are deeply interwoven, significantly influencing our values, identities, and actions. By recognizing the effects of consumerism on our lives and striving for sustainable and just alternatives, we can start to loosen its hold and cultivate a culture that places greater value on authenticity, connection, and overall well-being.

What is a reference letter?

How to write a letter of reference, reference letter example: principal for teacher, reference letter example: teacher for coworker.

Reference letters are just what they sound like: a testimonial about a person’s professional qualifications, abilities, and achievements. They’re written by someone who knows the applicant well and can speak to specifics about their career.

These days, most jobs don’t require reference letters since employers perform reference checks themselves. However, academia is different. Many teaching jobs require candidates to submit written letters of reference as part of their application packet. This is just one part of their overall evaluation of a candidate, of course. But these letters remain a key part of many teachers’ job searches.

Letter of Reference vs. Letter of Recommendation

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but reference letters are almost always specific to a job search. Students often need letters of recommendation for scholarships and college applications. If you need help writing a letter of recommendation for a student, check out these articles:

Writing a reference letter can feel like a daunting task, but these tips can help. Don’t forget to grab our free printable letter of reference template too!

Review Reference Letter Samples

If you’ve never written a reference letter or you want to up your game, take a look at some samples first. One of our favorite ways to do it is to use AI like ChatGPT to generate some reference letter samples specific to your situation. You definitely don’t want to copy these word-for-word, but you might find some helpful phrases or get a better idea of the format you should use. We’ve included some sample letters below too.

Brainstorm Ideas First

Before you begin writing, do a quick brainstorming session and jot down your thoughts about these prompts:

  • What three words first come to mind when you think of this teacher?
  • List this person’s biggest strengths as an educator.
  • List a few times when this teacher really impressed you.
  • Has this person won any awards or accolades worth mentioning?
  • What makes this teacher special compared to their peers?
  • What would this teacher’s students say about them? What about parents or co-workers? (If you have examples, round them up to include in the letter.)

Personalize the Letter

If you can, try to write a letter that’s specific to the job the teacher needs a reference letter for. Find out what they’ll be doing in their new role or position so you can include the most relevant qualities in your recommendation. Some reference letters are more general, so it’s OK if you can’t personalize them to the job.

Ask the teacher if there’s anything specific they’d like you to mention. You may also ask if there’s anything they’d prefer to keep confidential. For instance, if the teacher has a disability, they may not want to disclose that information yet.

Write an Introduction

Introduce yourself and explain your relationship to the teacher you’re providing a reference for. Include information such as how long you’ve known them and whether you’re speaking as a colleague, coworker, mentor, or supervisor.

Verify Their Qualifications and Experience

In the next paragraph, speak to the teacher’s education, including any special certifications or professional development achievements. Mention any awards, honors, or accolades they’ve earned. You can keep this section fairly short; the teacher has likely listed all of this on their CV already. Your reference letter will just help verify these qualifications.

Highlight Their Best Qualities

In the body of your letter, write two or three paragraphs that really help identify what makes this teacher special. Don’t try to squeeze in everything you know; instead, think about what really helps the person you’re recommending stand out. For each paragraph, focus on one of these areas (or other relevant topics), choosing the two or three overall that seem most important for this person.

  • Subject matter knowledge and expertise
  • Pedagogy skills
  • Student and/or parent relationships
  • Professional development
  • Community relations
  • Communication skills
  • Leadership roles
  • School pride and loyalty
  • Personal traits, such as passion, enthusiasm, dedication, creativity, etc.

Provide Specific Examples and Anecdotes

This is where you really have the chance to make your letter valuable to the candidate. It’s easy to describe a person as “passionate about recognizing diversity” or “excellent at differentiating learning.” Without examples, though, these are just words. Try to anchor each quality you mention with specific examples or anecdotes that back up those words. Here are a couple of examples:

  • “Alana is passionate about recognizing and celebrating diversity in her classroom. She frequently draws on her strong community relationships to bring diverse speakers and cultural activities to her classroom. Last fall, she organized an incredibly popular school-wide Diversity Fair where students and their families were encouraged to share their own cultures and experiences and learn from each other. One parent noted, ‘I’ve lived in this community for three years, but this is the first time I really feel like I know my neighbors.’”
  • “One of Jamie’s strongest qualities is their ability to differentiate learning for their students. They’re always willing to determine what’s keeping a student from doing their best and finding new ways to overcome challenges. For instance, Jamie was instrumental in helping our school implement text-to-speech software that assists struggling readers and those who have visual impairment. This leveled the playing field in their history and geography classes, helping students focus on the subject at hand instead of spending too much time deciphering text.”

Conclude With a Strong Endorsement

You’ve come all this way, so don’t fall short at the very end! This is the time to state your personal recommendation in no uncertain terms. Sum up your major points, and offer to provide more information if needed.

  • “I’m pleased to recommend Alana Whitmore for an elementary teaching position at your school. Her commitment to diversity, creative classroom approaches, and compassion for students and fellow coworkers would make her an excellent addition to any education team. If you want to discuss her qualifications further, don’t hesitate to contact me.”

Write Professionally and Proofread Carefully

This is a business communication, so strive for a professional but warm tone overall. If it’s a paper letter, use the standard business letter format (on your school letterhead if you’re an administrator). In an email, be sure your signature includes contact information such as a phone number and school address.

Don’t forget to proofread! A letter riddled with spelling errors and grammar mistakes is unlikely to hold much sway with a hiring committee or selection panel. Use a program like Grammarly to help you edit your letter until you’re satisfied with the final version.

Dear Hiring Committee,

I am writing to enthusiastically recommend Alana Whitmore for any opportunity that may arise that aligns with her exceptional skills and dedication as an elementary school teacher. In my capacity as the principal of Maya Angelou Elementary, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the invaluable contributions Alana has made to our school community.

Alana has worked here for seven years, three as a fifth-grade teacher and four in third grade. She came to us fresh from earning her teaching certification at Lancaster University, and continued her education over the last several years to earn her Master’s of Education in Curriculum Design and Development. She was honored with our district’s Teacher of the Year award in 2022 and was the keynote speaker at our state’s education conference in 2023.

Alana is an exemplary educator who consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to the academic and emotional growth of her students. Through her inventive teaching methods and personalized approach, she ensures that every child in her classroom is provided with opportunities to thrive and succeed. During a recent observation, I noted how she cleverly adapted her unit on volcanoes to embrace different learning styles. She provided choices like watching a video, reading an article, or listening to a short podcast to build background knowledge. Students individually chose the option they preferred, then used their knowledge to work with a partner to design a poster, write a report, or give a short presentation on the topic. Students were all engaged throughout the process, enjoying a measure of autonomy while still meeting the stated learning objectives.

Furthermore, Alana excels in building strong and collaborative relationships with parents and guardians. She understands the importance of fostering open communication and partnership between home and school, and she actively seeks opportunities to involve families in their child’s education. One parent reached out to me to share these thoughts: “Ms. Whitmore is the first teacher who seems to care about me as a parent and a person. She went out of her way to arrange a videoconference that met my hectic work schedule, and seemed genuinely interested in the suggestions I had for helping my son. Knowing that she really cares has made this school year so much better for us all.”

In addition to her effectiveness in the classroom and with parents, Alana is highly regarded by her colleagues for her collaborative spirit and willingness to share her expertise. Last year, she helped organize a very well-received professional development day, with a variety of sessions that allowed every teacher to find a subject that truly mattered to them. She serves as a mentor to one of our new teachers, who told me that Alana has helped him see how he can put his college educational theories into practice in the real world. Other teachers regularly share praise for Alana’s cooperative spirit, and she’s been awarded “Coworker of the Year” by our staff three years in a row.

Alana embodies the qualities of an exceptional educator: She is dedicated, passionate, and deeply invested in the well-being and success of her students. Her commitment to differentiation, parent relationships, and collaboration sets her apart as a truly outstanding teacher. I wholeheartedly recommend Alana Whitmore for any role or opportunity where her skills, expertise, and dedication can make a meaningful impact. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.

Gina Torres Principal, Maya Angelou Elementary

Dear Selection Committee,

I am writing to enthusiastically recommend Jamie Lin for any teaching position that may become available within your school. As a fellow teacher and colleague at Ridgemont High School, I have had the pleasure of working closely with Jamie and have witnessed firsthand their exceptional talents and dedication to the field of education.

Jamie came to our school as a teacher of history and geography in 2019, working with ninth- through twelfth-grade students each year since. Before joining our team, they earned their Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on diversity studies. During Jamie’s four years here, they have been nominated for Teacher of the Year three times and received the award in 2023. Jamie frequently speaks at educational conferences on subjects like cultural relevance and student diversity.

One of Jamie’s greatest strengths is their ability to foster diversity and inclusivity within the learning environment. Whether discussing historical events or exploring global cultures, Jamie ensures that all students feel valued, respected, and represented in the curriculum. They frequently draw on their strong community relationships to bring diverse speakers and cultural activities to the classroom. Speakers and cultural presentations have included representatives of several indigenous communities and local authors from a variety of backgrounds. They also invite community politicians and activists to debate key issues, while students observe and then question the speakers themselves.

In addition to their dedication to diversity, Jamie is a remarkably creative educator who consistently goes above and beyond to engage students in meaningful and thought-provoking learning experiences. They have a passion for project-based learning, teaching critical thinking and problem-solving by having students tackle real-world issues. Through their projects, Jamie’s students have painted cultural murals on the walls in the school courtyard, helped translate our school handbook and other documents into three different languages, and created clubs for fellow students interested in topics like history, geography, and global cultures. Jamie believes in demonstrating what you’ve learned in meaningful ways, and their students thrive in this environment.

Furthermore, Jamie excels at building strong community relationships both inside and outside the classroom. They actively collaborate with colleagues, parents, and community members to create a supportive and enriching learning environment that extends beyond the walls of the school. Last fall, Jamie organized an incredibly popular school-wide Diversity Fair where students and their families were encouraged to share their own cultures and experiences and learn from each other. One parent noted, “I’ve lived in this community for three years, but this is the first time I really feel like I know my neighbors.”

Overall, Jamie Lin is an exceptional educator who embodies the qualities of excellence, creativity, and community engagement. Their passion for teaching, dedication to diversity, and innovative approach to education make them an invaluable asset to any school community.

I wholeheartedly endorse Jamie Lin for any teaching position and am confident that they will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of their students and colleagues. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.

The 5 Best Free Antivirus Software Programs of 2024

There’s basically no excuse for not having top-notch antivirus software on your personal computers these days.

You have multiple well-rated — and no-cost — options to choose from, as PCMag’s latest ratings of free antivirus programs illustrate.

To reach its findings, the publication tested 38 antivirus products and examined the results of other independent labs that have tested the programs.

Don't Miss: NerdWallet ranked this company as the Best Online Financial Advisor for ’22 and ’23. If you have over $150k in investable assets and are tired of financial advisors that don’t fit your unique needs, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

The best free antivirus software

PCMag awarded its “Editors’ Choice” honor for 2024 to Avast One Essential . It earned an “outstanding” overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 from PCMag.

In writing about the rankings, Neil J. Rubenking, PCMag’s lead analyst for security, says:

“Avast has been supplying antivirus protection for as long as there’s been an antivirus industry … All four of the independent testing labs we follow include Avast in their reporting, and it aces almost every test. It also takes high scores in our own hands-on testing.”

However, PCMag published its 2024 ranking of free antivirus software before the U.S. Federal Trade Commission fined Avast $16.5 million for selling users’ data. So you might want to consider one of the runners-up instead.

AVG Antivirus Free and Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows tied for the second-place spot, with each scoring an “excellent” 4 out of 5. AVG was named “best for useful bonuses,” and Bitdefender is “best for no-frills protection.”

Rounding out the top five are Avira Free Security and Microsoft Defender Antivirus , each earning a “good” rating of 3.5 out of 5.

Kaspersky Free, which once ranked highly, is conspicuously absent from the list. PCMag notes that Kaspersky’s Russian origins and the war in Ukraine have caused many governments and organizations to censure and cut ties with the business. The Federal Communications Commission has gone so far as to say Kaspersky is a national security threat, and as a result, PCMag no longer recommends their products.

Should you pay for antivirus protection?

PCMag says that paid antivirus programs offer more protection and better protection than free versions. What’s more, tech support may be limited for free program users.

Whether you should pay for antivirus protection comes down to your budget. If a paid program isn’t in your budget, perhaps try a few of the free programs to see which you like best.

One exception is for business computers. PCMag notes that free antivirus programs are often free only for noncommercial use, meaning only for use on personal computers.

NPR in Turmoil After It Is Accused of Liberal Bias

An essay from an editor at the broadcaster has generated a firestorm of criticism about the network on social media, especially among conservatives.

Uri Berliner, wearing a dark zipped sweater over a white T-shirt, sits in a darkened room, a big plant and a yellow sofa behind him.

By Benjamin Mullin and Katie Robertson

NPR is facing both internal tumult and a fusillade of attacks by prominent conservatives this week after a senior editor publicly claimed the broadcaster had allowed liberal bias to affect its coverage, risking its trust with audiences.

Uri Berliner, a senior business editor who has worked at NPR for 25 years, wrote in an essay published Tuesday by The Free Press, a popular Substack publication, that “people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview.”

Mr. Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, castigated NPR for what he said was a litany of journalistic missteps around coverage of several major news events, including the origins of Covid-19 and the war in Gaza. He also said the internal culture at NPR had placed race and identity as “paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”

Mr. Berliner’s essay has ignited a firestorm of criticism of NPR on social media, especially among conservatives who have long accused the network of political bias in its reporting. Former President Donald J. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to argue that NPR’s government funding should be rescinded, an argument he has made in the past.

NPR has forcefully pushed back on Mr. Berliner’s accusations and the criticism.

“We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories,” Edith Chapin, the organization’s editor in chief, said in an email to staff on Tuesday. “We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world.” Some other NPR journalists also criticized the essay publicly, including Eric Deggans, its TV critic, who faulted Mr. Berliner for not giving NPR an opportunity to comment on the piece.

In an interview on Thursday, Mr. Berliner expressed no regrets about publishing the essay, saying he loved NPR and hoped to make it better by airing criticisms that have gone unheeded by leaders for years. He called NPR a “national trust” that people rely on for fair reporting and superb storytelling.

“I decided to go out and publish it in hopes that something would change, and that we get a broader conversation going about how the news is covered,” Mr. Berliner said.

He said he had not been disciplined by managers, though he said he had received a note from his supervisor reminding him that NPR requires employees to clear speaking appearances and media requests with standards and media relations. He said he didn’t run his remarks to The New York Times by network spokespeople.

When the hosts of NPR’s biggest shows, including “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” convened on Wednesday afternoon for a long-scheduled meet-and-greet with the network’s new chief executive, Katherine Maher , conversation soon turned to Mr. Berliner’s essay, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. During the lunch, Ms. Chapin told the hosts that she didn’t want Mr. Berliner to become a “martyr,” the people said.

Mr. Berliner’s essay also sent critical Slack messages whizzing through some of the same employee affinity groups focused on racial and sexual identity that he cited in his essay. In one group, several staff members disputed Mr. Berliner’s points about a lack of ideological diversity and said efforts to recruit more people of color would make NPR’s journalism better.

On Wednesday, staff members from “Morning Edition” convened to discuss the fallout from Mr. Berliner’s essay. During the meeting, an NPR producer took issue with Mr. Berliner’s argument for why NPR’s listenership has fallen off, describing a variety of factors that have contributed to the change.

Mr. Berliner’s remarks prompted vehement pushback from several news executives. Tony Cavin, NPR’s managing editor of standards and practices, said in an interview that he rejected all of Mr. Berliner’s claims of unfairness, adding that his remarks would probably make it harder for NPR journalists to do their jobs.

“The next time one of our people calls up a Republican congressman or something and tries to get an answer from them, they may well say, ‘Oh, I read these stories, you guys aren’t fair, so I’m not going to talk to you,’” Mr. Cavin said.

Some journalists have defended Mr. Berliner’s essay. Jeffrey A. Dvorkin, NPR’s former ombudsman, said Mr. Berliner was “not wrong” on social media. Chuck Holmes, a former managing editor at NPR, called Mr. Berliner’s essay “brave” on Facebook.

Mr. Berliner’s criticism was the latest salvo within NPR, which is no stranger to internal division. In October, Mr. Berliner took part in a lengthy debate over whether NPR should defer to language proposed by the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association while covering the conflict in Gaza.

“We don’t need to rely on an advocacy group’s guidance,” Mr. Berliner wrote, according to a copy of the email exchange viewed by The Times. “Our job is to seek out the facts and report them.” The debate didn’t change NPR’s language guidance, which is made by editors who weren’t part of the discussion. And in a statement on Thursday, the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association said it is a professional association for journalists, not a political advocacy group.

Mr. Berliner’s public criticism has highlighted broader concerns within NPR about the public broadcaster’s mission amid continued financial struggles. Last year, NPR cut 10 percent of its staff and canceled four podcasts, including the popular “Invisibilia,” as it tried to make up for a $30 million budget shortfall. Listeners have drifted away from traditional radio to podcasts, and the advertising market has been unsteady.

In his essay, Mr. Berliner laid some of the blame at the feet of NPR’s former chief executive, John Lansing, who said he was retiring at the end of last year after four years in the role. He was replaced by Ms. Maher, who started on March 25.

During a meeting with employees in her first week, Ms. Maher was asked what she thought about decisions to give a platform to political figures like Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican Party chair whose position as a political analyst at NBC News became untenable after an on-air revolt from hosts who criticized her efforts to undermine the 2020 election.

“I think that this conversation has been one that does not have an easy answer,” Ms. Maher responded.

Three teenagers have received community-based sentences after writing the words "Free Palestine" on Rochdale Cenotaph.

Adeem Ahmed and Amaan Tariq, both 18, and a 17-year-old - who cannot be named for legal reasons - were given six-month referral orders.

On November 7 last year, the town’s war memorial was targeted just one day after a separate incident where two other teenagers damaged poppy wreaths while shouting antisemitic language.

Ahmed, Tariq and the 17-year-old pleaded guilty to criminal damage and were set to face trial this month after they denied the damage was racially aggravated.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the trial "on evidential grounds".

The trio were then sentenced to the referral orders and forced to pay £140 in compensation, £85 court costs and a £26 victim surcharge.

Tariq and the youth also pleaded guilty to the theft of spray cans and paint brushes from B&M Bargains in Rochdale.

When District Judge Joanne Hirst fixed the trial date she told the teenagers: "You have pleaded guilty to a very serious offence.

The teenagers claimed they were furious after seeing a video online of a man removing Palestinian flags from the cenotaph.

Senior NPR editor resigns after accusing outlet of liberal bias

An editor for National Public Radio resigned Wednesday just days after he inflamed the ongoing culture war about mainstream media with an essay about what he considers the news outlet’s liberal leanings.

Uri Berliner, who was a senior business editor, wrote an essay for the right-leaning online publication The Free Press in which he said he believes NPR is losing the public’s trust.

NPR, a nonprofit radio network, has an “absence of viewpoint diversity,” he wrote in the essay, which was published April 9. It “has always had a liberal bent,” but now an “open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR,” he wrote.

The essay triggered a wave of scrutiny of NPR from conservatives, some of whom responded to it with calls to defund the news organization, which receives federal funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. NPR says on its website that federal funding is “essential” to NPR but that “less than 1% of NPR’s annual operating budget comes in the form of grants from CPB and federal agencies and departments.”

Uri Berliner in 2017.

In a resignation statement on X, Berliner briefly elaborated on the reason for his departure, which came days after NPR reported that it had suspended him for five days without pay following the op-ed’s release.

NPR’s chief business editor, Pallavi Gogoi, had told Berliner about its requirement to secure approval before he appeared in outside media, according to NPR’s report.

“I don’t support calls to defund NPR,” Berliner wrote. “I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism.  But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay.”

Berliner did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. A representative for NPR said it “does not comment on individual personnel matters.”

Berliner’s essay gained traction on X, with many conservatives homing in on his thoughts about NPR’s political makeup. He wrote: “In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans. None.”

He also criticized NPR’s coverage, or lack thereof, of certain stories, such as the Mueller report, Hunter Biden’s laptop, the origins of Covid-19 and systemic racism following the murder of George Floyd.

High-profile supporters of Berliner’s essay, including former President Donald Trump and X owner Elon Musk, shared criticism of NPR and its CEO, Katherine Maher.

“NO MORE FUNDING FOR NPR, A TOTAL SCAM! EDITOR SAID THEY HAVE NO REPUBLICANS, AND IS ONLY USED TO ‘DAMAGE TRUMP.’ THEY ARE A LIBERAL DISINFORMATION MACHINE. NOT ONE DOLLAR!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on April 10.

Musk wrote on X that the “head of NPR hates the Constitution of the USA” in response to a clip of Maher discussing the challenges in fighting disinformation and honoring the First Amendment right to free speech.

Meanwhile, some journalists at NPR pushed back against Berliner’s accusations.

“Morning Edition” co-host Steve Inskeep shared his take in a post on his Substack newsletter , saying he believes Berliner failed to “engage anyone who had a different point of view.”

“Having been asked, I answered: my colleague’s article was filled with errors and omissions,” he wrote, adding, “The errors do make NPR look bad, because it’s embarrassing that an NPR journalist would make so many.”

NPR’s chief news executive, Edith Chapin, also denied Berliner’s assessment of the newsroom in a memo to staff members, according to NPR .

“We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories,” she wrote. “We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world.”

Maher also said Monday in a statement to NPR : “In America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen. What matters is NPR’s work and my commitment as its CEO: public service, editorial independence, and the mission to serve all of the American public. NPR is independent, beholden to no party, and without commercial interests.”

Every freelancer needs to have an SEO strategy and analytical tools in their freelancing toolkit, to ... [+] maintain sustainable and cost-effective success

Every successful freelancer knows that it takes a thorough understanding of one's market, competitors, and customers to consistently have a sustainable income, and to maintain an edge in the race for freelance talent.

With more than half of the U.S. workforce turning to side hustles as a primary or secondary source of income to help the manage the soaring costs of living, and an estimated 1.57 billion freelancers globally, the competition is fierce and the freelancer market is becoming saturated, making it more difficult to secure gigs and attract clients.

This is why every freelancer should have SEO tools in their toolkit, so they can gather useful data to inform their decision-making. This helps in critical processes that freelancers face on a day-to-day, such as knowing what tags or hashtags to use when creating content, assessing search trends to identify new product or service ideas, and remaining relevant in today's conversations to keep their audience (for their personal brand) and customers engaged, on social media and on their websites.

But of course, you opted in to become a freelancer because you're barely able to make ends meet, and with the mortgage price spike , money is tighter than ever. So paying for comprehensive SEO packages such as Semrush may not be your first move, at least not when you're starting out and trying to launch your side hustle (or main hustle) with as little capital as possible.

‘Shōgun’ Episode 10 Review: A Powerful Finale, But Not What I Was Expecting

Trump ally warned ex-president about keeping classified docs—over a year before indictment, fbi filing says, the trump media stock price (djt) is about to adjust down by -22.7%.

The good news is that there are free SEO tools that can be just as effective—at least to begin with—depending on what you're using them for.

But first, what exactly is SEO anyway and why is it important?

What Is SEO And How Does It Work?

SEO means Search Engine Optimization, and this simply means that your web pages and content are well-optimized for search engines, especially the most popular ones such as Google and Bing.

SEO is one of the most effective and most critical digital marketing strategies, and it helps you position your personal brand to thousands, potentially even millions, of customers, once you learn to do it right. It's been estimated that Google processes 8.5 billion searches every day, and occupies 92% of the search engine market. So even if you had less than a 1% share of this market, you have the opportunity to secure many high-paying gigs and projects as a freelancer if you tap into this vast pool of potential leads.

Claiming the coveted top spot of Google search results pages whenever a potential customer types in a query takes significant work, but once you develop an SEO strategy and use tools to help you understand the data and analytics behind it, you will begin to see results.

These results can include:

  • Increased website traffic—more clicks and visits which can convert to paying clients
  • Consistently ranking well enhances brand visibility and your credibility as a freelancer
  • Pre-qualified leads, as you will be attracting people who are already interested in what you have to offer
  • Competitive advantage over other freelancers and even other companies
  • Cost-effective and sustainable for the long-term, unlike paid advertizing

Research is key to your SEO strategy as a freelancer. When you understand who your target customer base is, where they hang out, and what they search for, you will be better positioned to appear in their search results on Google, or on Etsy, for example.

Free SEO Tools For Freelancers

Let's have a look at 10 free SEO tools which you can use for data, research, and analytics to provide you with useful insights as a freelancer. These tools have all been ranked highly by tech review sites such as Trustpilot, Capterra, Product Review, G2, and others, and many boast forever free plans/features, free trials, and paid upgrade options. Some also have new features that are powered by AI.

  • Google Trends
  • Google Search Console
  • Google Analytics
  • EtsyHunt (for SEO research if you sell digital or physical products on Etsy)
  • Moz Keyword Explorer
  • Keyword Surfer (by Surfer)—free Chrome extension
  • Keysearch (has a collection of free SEO research tools for Etsy, Amazon, eBay, and others)

SEO research tools can help you rank highly, not only on Google, but on Etsy, eBay, and Amazon as ... [+] well

As with any new tool that you use to grow or build a business venture, the key is to evaluate the pros and cons for each, experiment, and see what works best for your freelancing endeavors. You might decide to stick with one, or use a combination of tools. But whatever you decide, the most important thing to remember is that ultimately, your research into the customers you're serving is the most fundamental aspect of being a successful freelancer. Cut corners with this, and you'll never stand out from the competition.
