Application Timeline & Process

The timetable outlined below is a guide to assist students who plan to apply for academic Master’s degree and Ph.D programs. Because of the range of programs and requirements, the information below is a general framework. The process typically begins in the first semester of junior year, or two years prior to application. Students should plan on submitting application materials by the end of first semester senior year, or approximately eight months prior to matriculation.

The graduate school application process, also outlined below, is similar to the process you used when applying to undergraduate colleges; there are materials to gather and deadlines to meet. Many students find it helpful to compile a spreadsheet to help them stay organized and avoid missing important deadlines. Early decisions and rolling admissions policies are common, even if not explicitly stated. There are additional featured articles at the bottom of this page that can help you with some of these components.

Application Process

Standardized tests.

Standardized tests are used in combination with your other application materials to gauge your preparation for graduate-level work. Tests may be general or subject specific depending on the subject and program requirements. Determine which, if any, standardized tests you need to take and gather information on how often the test is offered, testing locations, and cost. For GRE details and registration information, please visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website .

Additional considerations for Students with Disabilities who are thinking about applying to graduate or professional schools include identifying which exams are needed, how far in advance exam accommodations must be requested, and which documentations regarding your disability will likely be needed for exam accommodations.

Personal Statements

Preparing a well-written and effective personal statement (sometimes referred to as statements of purpose or personal essays) that clearly articulates your preparation, goals, and motivation for pursuing that specific graduate degree is critically important. You will need to spend a considerable amount of time and effort crafting these statements. For individual assistance with writing your personal statement, consult with the writing tutor in your residential college  or the Writing Center within the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning .

Letters of Recommendation

Graduate programs will commonly require 2-3 letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation allow an admissions committee to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and potential from another person’s perspective. You can find more information in our Soliciting Letters of Recommendation Blog .

Application Forms

Program application forms are typically available on the program web site; you can also call the program to request application materials. Pay special attention to any directions given and complete application forms exactly as instructed. Do not simply refer the recipient to your resume; answer all questions completely and thoroughly.

Transcripts:  Graduate schools usually require that you submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher education as part of your application. You can request your Yale College transcript online through the Student Information System (SIS) or by contacting the Office of the Registrar . If you completed courses at another college or university or studied abroad, you will need to contact those schools directly to request official transcripts. For courses taken abroad, you may be required to get a translation of your transcripts if it is in another language.

Resumes and CVs:  Graduate programs often require applicants to provide a resume or CV (curriculum vitae). The OCS website provides resume samples and a CV worksheet  that you can use as a guide when developing your document. Before submitting your resume or CV, you should have it reviewed by a OCS Career Advisor or Graduate Peer Advisor to assure it is free of errors and is effectively conveying your skills, background, and experiences.

Writing Samples and Creative Portfolios:  Depending on your discipline, you may also need to submit writing samples appropriate to your intended area of specialization, such as poetry, fiction, or journalism. For those pursuing advanced degrees in performing or visual arts, you may also need to submit a portfolio of your work or audition tapes. Review the specific requirements for the programs you’re considering and speak with your faculty advisor or OCS Career Advisor, Derek Webster , to discuss your needs.

Interviewing:  A graduate school interview should be approached in the same manner as a job interview. Preparation and practice are essential. Be ready to discuss your academic preparation and motivations for seeking a graduate degree, your specific areas of interest within the field of study, and your goals following your degree completion. Also, be prepared to discuss any internships, fieldwork, research, or clinical experiences and the impact they had on you. After the interview, don’t forget to send thank you notes.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Admissions to the Computer Science Department

What is the deadline for applying?

Graduate students are admitted starting in the fall term. The deadline for admission in the fall term, 2024, is January 2, 2024 for master’s student applicants. The deadline for applicants to the doctoral program is December 15, 2023.

There is no way to apply during a spring term, although once admitted a student may delay admission for a year or possibly less, with final permission from the Dean of the Graduate School. Admitted students must send a request to the Computer Science Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) for approval first.

Can I get the application fee waived?

In many cases, yes. Membership in a variety of professional organizations qualify you for a fee wavier. For example:

  • National Society of Black Engineers ( NSBE)
  • American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)
  • Society of Women Engineers ( SWE)
  • Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science ( SACNAS)
  • The complete list is here

Past attendance at many conferences also qualify you. For example:

  • Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC)
  • Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference (Tapia)

Finally, if you have ever received a US Federal Pell Grant, you qualify for a waiver. More information, including the waiver request form, is available here .

What is the department’s policy on GRE Scores?

The GRE score is not accepted for doctoral applicants.

What about grades?

It is good to have high grades, but we actually look at transcripts. If a student has a low grade-point average, we check to see if perhaps he or she did badly early in college, possibly through lack of motivation, then did better as intellectual curiosity grew. Or perhaps someone’s grades are low because he or she focused entirely on computer science and received bad grades in everything else. (Is that good? It’s impossible to answer without looking at the students’ entire record.)

How important are TOEFL scores to foreign students?

Very important, but only because we have nothing better. Your goal before admission should be to learn English, not to pass the TOEFL.

Yale University attaches a great deal of importance to the process by which graduate students learn to become teachers. Every student is required to TA two terms, and may TA more terms if desired. Being an instructor or assisting one requires interactions with undergraduate students. Yale administers its own test to students after they get here to be sure they know English well enough to talk to undergraduates. Failure to pass this test causes administrative problems for faculty and graduate students. The test is waived for students with a 4-year degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction; and for students who score 26 or higher on the spoken portion of the iBT test.

I didn’t major in Computer Science as an undergraduate. Can I still get in?

Yes. It helps to have a serious, specific interest in some aspect of the science of computing, over and above experience in programming computers. If you are unacquainted with complexity and decidability, or have only cursory knowledge of data structures, or don’t know the difference between an algorithm and a program, then you should consider taking (and doing well in!) undergraduate courses that address these matters before you apply to a graduate program.

Can you tell me in advance what my chances are of being admitted?

No. Many students ask us to do this, and if we acceded to all such requests, we would in essence be rehearsing the admissions process on the group that asked for advance notice. Not only would this be a lot of work, but the results wouldn’t mean anything, since the outcome when we see all the candidates would likely be different.

What financial support is available for me?

The Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is committed to supporting Ph.D. students for five years, including summers, by combinations of grants, university fellowships, and teaching Assistantships.

Do a student’s research interests affect his or her chance of being admitted?

Yes, a little. We expect every student to be open to many facets of Computer Science when they arrive, and encourage them to feel free to change their area of concentration after they get here. Our main criterion for admission is the applicant’s intelligence, curiosity, and ability to explore without detailed supervision. That said, if a faculty member in a research area is looking for students, the admissions committee tries to accommodate him or her by focusing a bit more than usual on applicants in that area. Of course, the applicants don’t know which areas fall in that category, so they shouldn’t worry about it.

Individual faculty members get many inquiries asking if they will be accepting new students during the next admissions season. As you should be able to infer from the previous paragraph, these inquiries are misguided; students are admitted to the department, not to the research group of a particular faculty member.

Do applicants apply directly to the Ph.D. program, or are they expected to apply to the MS program, and from there be admitted to the Ph.D. program?

Apply directly to the Ph.D. program. The two programs are completely separate, and it is unusual for a Master’s student to go on to the Ph.D. program. If they choose to do so, they must reapply to the Graduate School.

Can I be a part-time student?

Ph.D. students must be full-time students.

Where can I find out how to apply?

Remember that you must apply to the Graduate School of Arts & Science. You do not apply directly to the Department of Computer Science nor do you send any forms to this department. Information on applying for admission to the Yale University Graduate School can be found by going to the web page

http://yale.edu/graduateschool/admissions/

Information regarding how and when to apply is available at that web site.

What if I have a question that is not on this list?

If your question is about the Yale admissions process, check the Graduate School FAQ .

University Registrar’s Office

Verifications, enrollment verification.

The Office of the University Registrar has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) to provide certificates of enrollment for students in Yale College and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Students are able to obtain a document confirming enrollment instantly by visiting the National Student Clearinghouse’s MyHub site . Enrollment certificates from the NSC display the Yale watermark.

To access your enrollment certificate, please click on the “Download Certificates” button, found on the top of the landing page after you log into the NSC MyHub .

Yale College and GSAS students who have registered for the fall 2023 term are able to obtain advanced enrollment certificates from the National Student Clearinghouse. Because the first of-term enrollment file for fall 2023 will be sent to the NSC on Sept. 17, 2023, changes in enrollment status will not appear on enrollment certificates issued by the NSC until after that date. Incoming first year students will need to wait until this time to order an enrollment verification and may use their admissions letter in the meantime.

Professional school students ( Architecture , Art , Divinity , Drama , Forestry & Environmental Studies , Global Affairs ,  Law , Management , Medicine , Music , Nursing , Public Health ) and Yale Summer Session students (not concurrently attending Yale College or the Graduate School) must obtain enrollment verifications from their own school registrars.

Degree Verification

If a degree verification is needed, please request an official transcript. Information on how to submit a transcript request can be found on our Transcript Requests page.

Beginning with graduates in the class of 2023, degree verification certificates will be available via the NSC MyHub .

Organizations and third-party requestors performing background checks or verifying degrees must submit their request online through the  National Student Clearinghouse .

Professional school students ( Architecture , Art , Divinity , Drama , Forestry & Environmental Studies , Global Affairs ,  Law , Management , Medicine , Music , Nursing , Public Health ) must obtain degree verifications from their own school registrars.

  • Requests for any type of verification will not be taken by phone and verification will not be provided by phone.
  • The University Registrar’s Office does not create and issue customized letters regarding enrollment, degree, or other items related to academic history and transcripts. Only standard letters (if necessary) are available for issuance.
  • Letters and services are for current and former students only. Letters and services are not available for persons who were not admitted and matriculated students in Yale College or the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Questions regarding verification services can be directed to registrar@yale.edu .
  • Admission Decision FAQs

Questions and answers in this category relate to the process of communicating admissions decisions and responding to those decisions.

  • PhD/Master's Application Process
  • Admissions - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How and when will I receive an official decision notification about my application for admission?

You will receive a notification email when a decision is ready for you, typically in February or early March. The email will instruct you to check your Application Status Portal for an update about your application. Please note only decisions released from the Graduate School, and not from individual departments or programs, should be considered official. Decisions are only available in the Application Status Portal; Graduate Admissions staff cannot release any decisions over the phone or by email. We do not mail any hard copies of admissions decisions through the mail, but you may download and print a copy of your decision letter from your Application Status Portal.

Q: I was offered admission. How do I respond to the offer?

Please fill out the “Reply to Offer of Admission” form in your Application Status Portal.

Q: I was offered admission but have not received an Offer Letter - what should I do?

Your admissions decision will only be available on your Application Status Portal. You should print and retain a copy of this letter.

Hard copy letters are no longer printed and mailed.

Q: Where should I send my official transcript?

You should only send an official transcript if you have accepted an offer of admission.  Incoming students should refer to our Transcript FAQs for more information.

Q: I was not offered admission and need my materials returned. Is that possible?

Unfortunately, no. As a matter of policy, we do not return application materials to applicants.

Q: I was not offered admission and want to re-apply next year. Does the Office of Graduate Admissions retain my application and supplemental materials?

We may retain your application year to year, but you will nevertheless need to submit a new application each time, including all required materials and the application fee.

Applicants who have been denied admission three times by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, whether by one or more departments, are not eligible to apply again. If a fourth application is submitted, it will not be considered and the application fee will not be refunded.

Q: I was not offered admission and want to speak to someone about this. Whom do I contact?

Departments/programs make admission recommendations to the GSAS deans, who make the final decisions concerning admitted applicants.

Decisions not to admit an applicant are almost always made at the program level.

  • You might try contacting the program to which you applied.
  • Please consider that the large number of applications received and the small number of places available often make for difficult decisions.
  • Admissions committees adopt a comparative perspective toward all applications received and seldom keep extensive records concerning the decision in each case.
  • Programs are not required to provide applicants explanations concerning admission decisions.

Q: I was offered admission and accepted (or declined) the offer, but now I have changed my mind. What do I do?

Please contact the Office of Graduate Admissions by emailing us at [email protected]

Q: Can I defer an offer of admission to a later date?

With permission from your program and the Graduate School, you may defer your enrollment for one year. To begin the process of requesting a deferral, contact the director of graduate studies (DGS) in your program. If the DGS supports your deferral request, they will seek formal approval from their assigned academic dean at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Note: You must accept the offer of admission first before a deferral request can be granted.

Carolyn M. Mazure, PhD, Chair of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research

In November, President Joe Biden launched the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research. This effort is led by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden in close collaboration with the White House Gender Policy Council. It is chaired by Carolyn M. Mazure, PhD, founder and director of Yale School of Medicine’s Women’s Health Research at Yale. Mazure is the Norma Weinberg Spungen and Joan Lebson Bildner Professor in Women's Health Research and a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale.

Historically, research on women’s health has been chronically underfunded, with often significant consequences for women’s health and health care. The White House Initiative seeks to increase and improve women’s health research and shed light on conditions that are specific to women, disproportionately affect women, or affect women differently.

“I have always believed in the power of research to save lives and to ensure that Americans get the high-quality health care they need,” President Biden said in a White House press release . “That’s why today, we’re establishing a new White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research so that my Administration—from the National Institutes of Health to the Department of Defense—does everything we can to drive innovation in women’s health and close research gaps.”

“Every woman I know has a story about leaving her doctor’s office with more questions than answers,” First Lady Jill Biden added . “Our new White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research will help change that by identifying bold solutions to uncover the answers that every woman and her family deserves.”

For 25 years, Mazure’s nationally recognized center, Women’s Health Research at Yale , has been leading innovative and interdisciplinary research on women’s health and on the influence of sex and gender on health outcomes.

“I’ve had the opportunity to see women’s health research become a recognized field of study that spans all health conditions experienced by women, its exponential growth in published data, innovations in care, and new careers in women’s health research,” says Mazure.

Nevertheless, women remain at higher risk for chronic disease and disability, for acute and chronic pain syndromes, and to die following heart attack. Women are also at higher risk for adverse effects of treatments and for co-occurring conditions. Mazure continues, “There is a tremendous need for science to move forward in supporting research that targets the health of women to improve outcomes.”

The Initiative’s Early Days

The White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research is pioneering the next generation of women’s health discoveries. The first step in the Initiative was to engage agencies across the federal government to generate concrete recommendations within 45 days from the signing of the Presidential Memorandum that will advance women’s health research. They are also deciding on priority areas of focus with these agencies and exploring new public-private partnerships that would spur further research.

“This initiative elevates the importance of women’s health research in the nation, which is really extraordinary,” says Mazure. “We have outstanding opportunities to make the progress that we need.”

Visiting Los Angeles, Chicago & Atlanta

In December, Mazure, the First Lady, and long-time women’s health advocate Maria Shriver, among others, visited Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and toured facilities specializing in cardiovascular disease research. “We cannot answer questions of how to treat women medically if the research doesn’t match up,” said Shriver .

The Initiative’s work continued, with a January visit to the University of Illinois-Chicago campus to hear about research on menopausal symptoms and the way scientists can monitor women’s hot flashes and the effect on their brains. “Every woman will be affected by menopause; yet there’s a stunning lack of information about how to manage and treat its symptoms. UIC is working to change that,” said Dr. Biden who was accompanied by actress and women’s health advocate Halle Berry.

In February, the team visited SteelSky Ventures’ Atlanta headquarters, a venture capital firm that focuses on investing in women’s health and femtech. There, Mazure facilitated a roundtable discussion focused on public-private partnerships.

During her opening remarks, Dr. Biden underscored , “We have a clear goal: to fundamentally change how we approach and fund women’s health research. Together, we will build a future where…health care meets the needs of everyone.”

“It was tremendous to hear from this panel and learn about innovations in research, in collaboration with community and corporate efforts, all centered on improving the health of women. New public-private partnerships can spark the innovation needed to improve the health of all women,” said Mazure.

A Transformational Investment in Women’s Health Research

At the end of February, an unprecedented announcement was made: $100 million in federal funding over the next year was committed to forward women’s health research. This marked the Initiative’s first deliverable and comes from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, within the Department of Health and Human Services. The announcement officially launched ARPA-H’s “Sprint for Women’s Health.”

“Somewhere … may be the idea that will cure cancer, cure heart disease, cure Alzheimer’s. Heart health, brain health, chronic diseases – you might just have the answers if we only dissolve the barriers standing in your way,” said Dr. Biden . “Together, through our White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, we will write new stories about women’s health care. We will accelerate your ideas and change women’s lives. We will build a health care system that puts women and their lived experiences at its center.”

“In just 100 days from the start of the Initiative, it is tremendously meaningful to be able to announce this investment in women’s health research,” said Mazure. “This kind of commitment, spurred by the First Lady and the Presidential Memorandum, will generate research to improve women’s lives.”

Major Action During Women’s History Month

During a Women’s History Month reception at the White House on March 18, President Biden signed an Executive Order “Advancing Women’s Health Research and Innovation,” solidifying women’s health research as a priority for the federal government.

“With the Executive Order I’m about to sign, I’m directing the most comprehensive set of executive actions ever taken to improve women’s health…And I’m going to ensure women’s health is integrated and prioritized across the entire federal government,” said President Biden during the event .

yale phd transcript

The new Executive Order integrates women’s health across the federal research portfolio, prioritizes investments in women’s health research, galvanizes new research on women’s midlife health, and directs the federal government to assess unmet needs in relation to women’s health.

Federal agencies also announced new actions they are taking as members of the initiative in five key areas. These areas include prioritizing and increasing investments in women’s health research; fostering innovation and discovery in women’s health; expanding and leveraging data collection and analysis related to women’s health; strengthening coordination, infrastructure, and training to support women’s health research; and improving women’s health across the lifespan.

“For too long women’s health research has been underfunded and understudied,” said Mazure. “We have made great progress in the last two decades, yet we still need to know much more about how to effectively prevent, diagnose, and treat a wide array of health conditions in women.”

“Today, as we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s write a new future for ourselves, and for the girls and women who will follow. A future where women leave doctors’ offices with more answers than questions,” said Dr. Biden .

A former MIT researcher has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the killing of a Yale University graduate student in Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A former researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was sentenced Tuesday to 35 years in prison for the killing of a Yale University graduate student found shot outside his car on a Connecticut street.

Qinxuan Pan, 33, who pleaded guilty to murder in February, apologized during a hearing in a New Haven courtroom packed with family and friends of the victim, Kevin Jiang.

“I feel sorry for what my actions caused and for everyone affected,” Pan said. “I fully accept my penalties.”

Jiang, 26, a U.S. Army veteran who grew up in Chicago and a graduate student at Yale's School of the Environment, had just left his fiancée's apartment in New Haven on the evening of Feb. 6, 2021, when he was shot multiple times by Pan, according to police and prosecutors. The couple had just gotten engaged days earlier.

Several of Jiang's relatives and friends spoke in court before the judge handed down the sentence, which Pan agreed to as part of his plea bargain.

“My son was a remarkable young man who cherished life and held deep (belief) in God. He had a bright future ahead — one that promised to spread God’s love far and wide,” said Jiang's father, Mingchen Jiang.

A motive for the killing was never made entirely clear. Investigators said they discovered that Pan and Jiang's fiancée were connected on social media and had met while at MIT, where both had graduated from and where Pan was working as a researcher at the time of the shooting.

According to the documents, Jiang’s fiancée told authorities she and Pan “never had a romantic or sexual relationship, they were just friends, but she did get a feeling that he was interested in her during that time.”

After the shooting, Pan fled the scene and eluded police for three months before being apprehended in Alabama, where officials said he was caught living under a fake name with $19,000 in cash, a passport and several cellphones.
